Exploring the newly-reopened Gallery 17 at Delaware Art Museum By BURT WASSERMAN Art Columnist

he Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington has artworks you can see nowhere else. At its core, there is the collection of pictures by the town’s native son, Howard Pyle. Among his masterworks, there is an incredibly moving scene of a sailor, marooned on a tiny island where he has been left to his fate: to die by drowning as a result of the rising tide caused by the surrounding waves. Because it touches your nerve endings as deeply as it does, once you see the original painting, you are bound to never forget it. In tribute to Pyle’s career as a renowned educator of successful commercial illustrators, the museum also has many holdings in the area of early 20th century art for commerce and industry. In addition, there is a rewarding group of 19th century American paintings and a distinguished group of PreRaphaelite style canvases from Great Britain as well as 20th century urban vistas by John Sloan and the group that comprised the Ash Can School of American Realism. Finally, there is the recently reopened Gallery 17, focusing on examples of contemporary art from the period following the end of World War II. These examples are arranged chronoPlease see EXPLORE on 20

Sadly, Haas and The Friends of the Boyd said they had found an unnamed benefactor who wanted to buy the building and restore it. Though it was confirmed that the offer was genuine, the Historic Commission voted 9-1 to approve the application of Live Nation and IPic. Though saddened by the unsuccessful end of their 12-year fight, Haas and his fellow preservationists have reached a legal agreement with Live Nation and IPic in which as many Art Deco features as possible will be saved. According to the settlement, interior features such

as 6-foot-high Art Deco mirrors will be removed and refurbished under the guidance of a project architect. Some features will be reinstalled in the building and others will be donated to museums. There will be exhibits, open to the public, of the interior features and the exterior easement will be preserved. There are still no agreements that can ease the pain of those who worked to preserve the Boyd for many years. It is “tragic” according to architect, Robert Hotes, co chairman of the American Institute of Architects preservation committee. “This is the one

large city in the country that isn’t preserving its historic theaters,” Hotes said. Kathryn Dowdell, also an architect and co-chairman of the AIA preservation committee, said there are serious problems with the procedures of the historic commission. The hearings, she said, were “fundamentally flawed — almost every time a developer tries to demolish an historic building in Philadelphia, the developer wins, and there is something wrong with that.” Diane Fiske can be contacted at dfiske_19118@ yahoo.com.
