his life, but it wasn’t until he retired that he decided to see if he was truly creative. He aimed to find out after working in research and development in the petroleum industry. “I spent 46 years using the left side of my brain. I said, ‘Let’s see what you can do with the right side,’” he said. He’s self-taught, and has taken workshops here and there. He’s constantly learning new techniques. “That’s the beauty of the medium,” he said. “It’s always evolving.” The most important thing, though, is that the process brings him joy. “I’m having a lot of fun,” he said. “That’s the primary goal — to have fun.” Madeleine Kelly, of Media, loves what she does, too. She paints — portraits, landscapes, impressionistic work, abstracts. She has 14

large-scale pieces in the show and 15 smaller monoprints, a series called “American Jazz,” which was inspired by her desire to minimalize. She created black and white images with tiny hints of color — a little red here, a little beige there. The series also was inspired by her cousin, jazz musician Father John D’Amico after he died. There was “a lot of listening to his music,” she said. Kelly’s inspired by events and images around her, but also just wanting to see what she can do with technique, color and patterns. “Sometimes, it’s seeing how far I can go. Sometimes there’s something deeper. Sometimes I’m trying to express something and sometimes I just want to play with a construct,” she said. “I ride both rails.” Please see Malvern on a19

theme in which a prince of ancient Troy is called upon to make a selection from among three mythological goddesses competing against each other in a beauty contest. Thus, Snow reminds us that he too, like Cézanne, deals with such timeless issues of the artist’s craft as creating elegant form, spatial volumes, aesthetic order and expressive grandeur. Incidentally, the creative arts community of Canada is deeply indebted to Snow for a legal issue he took to the Ontario High Court of Justice back in 1982. At that time, he had been commissioned to make a sculpture titled “Flightstop,” consisting of a number of Canada geese in flight at the atrium at the Toronto Eaton Centre shopping mall. During the Christmas season of 1981, the centre’s management placed red ribbons around the necks of the geese. Snow brought an action against the owners to have the

ribbons removed. His argument claimed the unauthorized placement of the ribbons offended the integrity of, and distorted, his work. The judge agreed with Snow. He ruled that the artwork’s integrity was “dis-

torted, mutilated or otherwise modified,” which was “to the prejudice of the honor or reputation of the author” contrary to Section 28.2 of the Copyright Act. Following the decision, the standard for moral rights in-

fringement has been raised by the requirement for more objective evidence of prejudice and harm. Furthermore, since these events first took place, the Copyright Act of Canada has been amended further

so that any modification to a painting, sculpture or engraving is deemed to prejudice the author. Ultimately, the show in Philadelphia is a fascinating adventure into a world of mul-

tiple meanings and processes of aesthetic analysis. It never becomes boring because of Snow’s endless capacity for asking questions fundamental to serious artistic expression.

Tiny house trend growing

bigger and bigger

T

By Diane M. Fiske

he Tiny House trend is spreading from the West Coast where it started and seems to be part of the green building movement. Tiny houses, the proponents claim, are compact and offer many of the features of a large house “without all the extras.” The tiny houses, measuring an average of 500 square feet, have bathrooms, showers, kitchens and loft bedrooms. These tiny homes, proponents also claim, generate much less waste and say that a 500-square-foot home, produces only about 300 pounds of waste compared with a 2,000-square-foot home, which sends 3,000 square feet to the dump. Some of the houses also have mobility, which means that the owners can move them from site to site if they wish. They can also use the house as a studio, a space for teenagers or a guesthouse. Since the homes are not permanently installed on a site, there are no zoning problems. Most of the tiny homes are handcrafted and built with quality materials. There are a number of producers in the Philadelphia area making these tiny homes now. A newer trend in the same

Above are a pair of samples of tiny houses in Japan. It’s easy enough to see how judicious use of space can make this tiny dwelling a fairly comfortable place to live.

Above are several examples of tiny houses.

direction is “micro-apartments,” which are now part of the tiny home movement, with developers, first in New York and Los Angeles, saying they are appealing to young professionals and graduate students who don’t spend a lot of their time at home, but need amenities such as good electronic connections and modern fail-safe utilities.

Many of these tenants are said to prefer a tiny apartment to having to share their housing with a roommate. In the Rittenhouse Square area, developer Alan Domb has produced an apartment building made up of tiny units with the amenities of roomier housing units in an old 19th century building. The apartments measure about the size

of one room in a conventional house. The Locust Street building holds nine units with tiny apartments ranging in size from 352 square feet to 510 square feet. There is one studio; the remainder are onebedroom units. The restored design resembles others in the area and has crafted details that were common in the 19th century. The building features include large windows, high ceilings, restored wainscoting and woodwork, and some homes even have the original marble fireplace mantels. Despite being so small, each unit has high-end features, including hardwood floors, bathrooms with well-designed vanities and tile detail; kitchens with wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops; as well as stackable washers and dryers. Rental prices start at about

$1,400 a month. In New York, there are people who live in apartments as small as 258-square-feet, sometimes, because they think it is good for the environment and not because they are short on cash to afford a bigger apartment, according to Mark Zeiger (not to be confused with Mimi Zeiger), who has written two books on tiny houses. Zeiger has been quoted as saying that there are people who like tiny apartments because they admire what they see as the Japanese way of design and seek to live in a small space with eating, sleeping, entertaining — everything — taking place in one room. Zeiger has also said that many people who participate in the small house movement are would-be carpenters and designers who like the idea of crafting their own loft and

living space without the use of professionals or designers. The fact that the space is so tiny facilitates their work. There may be some limits that municipal authorities say can be placed on the diminutive size of apartments. In San Francisco, members of the Board of Supervisors recently expressed fear that allowing smaller apartments could result in apartment owners downsizing their units in older buildings and collecting more rents for the same amount of space. There are also fears that the micro units could lead to exceeding the regulations regarding the number of units in an area. This case and others are yet to be determined. — Diane Fiske can be contacted at dfiske_19118@ yahoo.com.

Kelly liked to draw as a child. She focused on art until she was 18. At that time, she said she was discouraged by counselors who told her that only men became artists. When she was 47, she decided she had hidden that part of herself long enough. “I started thinking, ‘What am I waiting for? Life’s too short,’” she said. She started working on her art on weekends. Four years ago, when she lost her corporate job, she became a professional artist. She shows her work in galleries and

teaches workshops and private students. “It was a great choice because I love it,” she said. “It’s a difficult choice, though. It’s challenging not knowing there’s a weekly paycheck coming.” She feels lucky that she has been successful. She likes being a creative person. It’s a way for her to express herself, which is necessary, she said. And creativity has benefits for viewers, too. “If you’ve ever seen naked walls in a hospital, art is necessary,” she said. “There’s a purpose for art. There’s a need for it. It really is soothing.”
