The Evolution of Woodworking By Adam Crugnale oodworking is an ancient art. It dates back to the early years of humanity. Woodturning, in particular, stretches to the ancient Egyptians. The Center for Art in Wood, a unique-combination museum/gallery and research center, is hosting two upcoming exhibits, “Hooked on Wood: The Allure of the Fish Decoy” and “Life Aquatic,” that celebrate art in wood. “Hooked on Wood,” curated by Dick Walters, features Above, in the “Hooked on Wood” exhibition — a fish decoy by John Peeters. This was called a trophy fish.” The decoys are enjoyed not only for their beauty as magnificently colored sculptures, but also for how the result of woodturning. The new Barnes a comfortable melding of the original with 21st century touches rying to compare the original Barnes Foundation in Merion with the new one on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia is a little like trying to decide which parent is responsible for the appearance of a child who basically resembles himself and not exactly his mother or father. Yet, visiting the new Barnes for the first time, the visitor can’t help but see an amazing resemblance between the new 93,000square-foot building in the angular setting in the gardenlike site and the original foundation in Merion. The first view of the new building as you advance from the Parkway is of the panels of limestone set in metallic bases. Each panel in the two-story building is made of Ramon gray and Ramon gold limestone from Israel rather than the Coutarnoux and Pouillenay Brux limestone from France in the original building designed by architect Paul Cret in collaboration with Albert Barnes in the mid 1920s. Yet the exterior of the building seen from the Parkway glows with the lines of rust color running through the panels of limestone and resembles those in the original Cret building. On the other hand, behind the entrance walls of the Parkway building is a threestory cantilevered glass tower that shimmers and almost disappears behind the more solid limestone walls. The tower will be used for administrative and educational purposes. The entrance to the building lies behind long ponds, filled with water lilies. All this is behind a wall in the back of the building, which has the beginning of an ivy covering growing at its base. This will produce a feeling of privacy as visitors enter. In the original Barnes, Cret created an Italianate building design and wrote that art galleries in former residences were more “inviting and conducive to the appreciation of art than windowless museums created for the purpose of displaying works of art.” Cret’s original design featured small interior galleries with burlap wall coverings and no doorways between rooms to facilitate the flow of appreciation of art from one room to another. The Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architecture firm seems to have succeeded in bringing the essence of the original build-

T

ing into its creative 21st century design for the new Barnes Foundation building, which opened last month. It is evident that the architects went out of their way to replicate the original galleries in the large entrance area and the smaller more intimate rooms on the second floor. In the entrance gallery, Matisse’s “The Dance” mural and special exhibit space retain the original proportions of the original buildings in all 23 galleries. The installation of the art was facilitated by photographs of each room in Merion so that the staff in the new building could make sure that everything is exactly as it was in the original building. Resemblances to the original include the Cret thesis that side lighting or illumination from windows rather than overhead lighting helps the viewer see the works of art more fully. In creating spaces for viewing art with windows rather than the “blind galleries” described by Cret in an article “The Buildings of the Barnes Foundation at Merion, Pa.,” published in 1926, the architects of the new building continued Cret’s thesis. But their creation is definitely their own. “We read a lot about Cret’s design, but we designed a new building,” said Philip Ryan, the project manager architect for the Tod Williams Billie Tsien firm, which is based in New York. The Italianate image is more of an essence as a visitor approaches the white oak doors and passes the lily ponds. The main gallery, which is 30 by 20 feet long, has the high windows and the same arrangement as the Merion building, with the exception of curtains that were on the original windows. Burlap on the walls of the galleries is a little paler than that used on the original galleries because the original company that produced the burlap is no longer in business. Ryan said the glass provided for the windows in the new building cuts down on glare and protects the art from sunlight. The windows also provide more light than the original curtained ones. Despite Cret’s writings that art is better seen by the use of side lighting or windows, the new design provides overhead light from “light boxes,” which provide a natural light illumination from above.

have been influenced by several significant historic sources. They include the late work of Paul Cézanne, the French Fauve movement, early 20th century German Expressionism and both the first and second generation schools of post-World War II New York City Action Painting. Currently, an exceptionally rewarding solo show of her accomplishments in drawing and

painting is on view at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington. The exhibition, organized by the Heather Campbell Coyle of the museum staff, will remain there on public display until July 15. Titled “The Painted Poetry of Mary Page Evans,” the installation is devoted to vibrant semi-abstractions based on the world of nature studied out of doors and exceptionally dynamic representations of the human figure. Born in the state of Virginia, Evans has traveled widely and lives today in Delaware. Showing work made over a span of 40 years, this latest presentation is arranged thematically by specific areas of subject matter. But no matter what the focus of a picture might be, she approaches the ultimate image in a given composition with great spontaneity and a consistent concern for light. At the same time, her prevailing interests in other aesthetic disciplines such as music, dance and literature constantly make their presence felt. Evans’ drawings and paintings are imbued with a piquant flavor of Whitmanesque innovation and metaphor. For example, many of her close-ups of trees are of workmen stripped to the waist. Muscular and sturdy, they interact energetically with their environment, fulfilling the role they have been assigned to play in the grand scheme of organic arboreal expectation. In a somewhat different vein, “Life Tree” is a brilliant oil on canvas offering a scene of upright trunks, sparse foliage and a stunning sunset. Standing in a row, like a group of silent sentinels, the substance of the picture is a hymn in praise of balance, harmony and order. Serving as a witness to a moment in some remote forest, it’s as though the artwork lives in terms of its own being. In a manner all its own, the painting, which dates from 1990, continues to have a life in the here and now. How remarkable it is that unlike so many otherwise perishable objects,

the artwork will probably survive the passage of time and still be available for spectators to enjoy long after the present day. The charcoal and pastel drawing of two models titled “Duet” projects a lively image in which vertical figures merge together in a unified pose. The vigorous treatment of the standing forms counterpoints the stillness of the setting in which the subjects find themselves. As a visitor moves from one selection to another, he or she can’t help but see how the various examples on view embody a sense of resolution. This state has been brought to realization as a result of the artist’s struggle to achieve accord by thoughtfully considering many contradictory impulses, eliminating what doesn’t work in favor of strokes of color that do. In due course, these forces come together as a cohesive complex of energies in flux, given existence as art form. Clearly, for Evans, making art is not a playful diversion from more urgent concerns. Instead, she works out of internal necessity. For her, applying pigment to paper and canvas is as basic as breathing.

For centuries, Philadelphia has been a major center for narrative painting and "realism" in the arts. Haunting Narratives focuses on a twist to that long tradition: the thematically dark, hauntingly strange works of art made by realist painters and print makers of Philadelphia since the 1930s. Ongoing through July 15, 2012: Salvatore Pinto: A Retrospective Celebrating the Barnes Legacy. Salvatore Pinto was part of a Philadelphia-based family of artists that Albert C. Barnes favored and collected. Works of art by the three Pinto brothers are included in Barnes' famous installation of his collection, now to open on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of the work of Salvatore to honor an essential transatlantic link between Philadelphia and European modernism.
