n his prime, Howard Pyle of Wilmington, Del., was a widely celebrated commercial artist. His principal area of focus consisted of preparing popular artworks that amplified and illuminated printed advertising messages and provided pictorial accompaniment for books and periodical literature. Now, a century after Pyle’s passing, his professional world of creative illustration has changed and expanded in ways that would probably shock and amaze him if he could come back to life and see it all flourishing today. To that end and saluting Pyle’s legacy, the Delaware Art Museum has mounted a comprehensive exhibition titled “State of the Art: Illustration 100 Years after Howard Pyle.” It shows the wide range of practice and the different areas of specialization pursued today by major figures recognized nationally for their aesthetic accomplishments. From traditionally drawn and painted forms to animated films and computer-generated image content, the overall installation features examples of contemporary graphic technology and visual media currently in use. The closing date for the show is June 1, 2013. Guest curator David Apatoff has selected eight widely renowned artists to
complete his survey of major approaches pursued in the field today. Together, the group provides a good cross-section of forms that reach out to people far and wide from billboard signs, store-window displays, television screens and the printed page. While some of the items in the show will be familiar to visitors because they have seen them before in the everyday world, others will be new discoveries. Moe Drucker, for example, is showing material he prepared for initial appearance in Mad magazine and cover designs that were originally printed for Time” John Cuneo’s pieces include items that have been used in The New Yorker, Esquire and The Atlantic. By comparison, other selections are bound to be fresh surprises. At their best, such individuals as Milton Glaser and the late Bernie Fuchs bring a unique driving force and expressive depth to their work. These characteristics, in turn, are joined with an independent graphic presence that gives their work a rare impact. In some mysteriously magical way, their personal style is able to ignite a powerful audience response to the combination of patterns and tones they bring into being. Flower Show brings Britain to the fore

his year, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will celebrate Britain as the theme for the annual Philadelphia Flower Show March 2 to March 10. While there will be no queen jumping out of a helicopter with the help of James Bond, as spectators saw at the Olympics in London last summer, there will be a Big Ben and a very modern “gates of London” constructed for the event by Sam Lemheney’s designers and construction team lead by Gary Radin of GMR Design. As usual, the show’s architects will construct interpretations rather than re-creations of the buildings they choose to feature to emphasize the show’s themes. For Big Ben, there will be a tall tower made up of shiny metal to represent the lofty presence of the historic site. “The clock will be the tallest building we have ever constructed for the Flower Show,” Alan Jaffe, spokesman for the horticultural society, said. Like its namesake, the flower show clock will be impossible to escape due to its size, sound and volume. Of course, the towering clock will be surrounded with — what else? — flowers, which should soften its impact somewhat. The gates of London will
not be gray stone and marble, but rather a sort of papiermâché that takes the blue and white coloring well and is only expected to last for the 10-day duration of the show, not the hundreds of years that Big Ben and the gates were expected to exist. It is fun for a designer to produce something that will evoke a sentiment rather than something made of bricks and mortar made to last as close to forever as is practical. According to Sam Lemheney, the chief designer of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, each show is conceived and planned years in advance. The team is now working on the 2017 show. Lemheney said it was not really feasible to produce the British-themed show the same year as Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee and the London Olympics in 2012. “We have many guests from around the world and last year there was a huge celebration for the diamond jubilee in Chelsea in London at their show,” Lemheney said. He said his team enjoys trying to re-create the experience of seeing architecture in London where “the old and the new are so close and a structure like Old Ben sits

creates a frame for the film. By exposing only partially at a time, she can mix mediums like time and place. Images appear to be etched onto the film, as if with a stencil, that calls to mind the desert and the jetty. This is referred to as aperture gate masking, a technique that Dean developed
for her films. “It’s made using very old techniques,” said Dean, who compared her creation to the old Western films our fathers and grandfathers loved so much. “For me, it’s about time. Future and past. It’s about the spiral in nature and its relation to film.”

His work has won significant awards for excellence and has appeared in major publications. He also serves students of communication art classes as a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Ralph Eggleston served as an art director at Pixar Studios for “Toy Story,” the first full-length computer-animated film. He was also a production designer for such films as “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E.” His imaginative imagery has been warmly praised for its exceptional feeling for color and composition.
