8 IN MY CORNER

Getting out and enjoying the rays By LaTria Garnigan t’s summer! Well, okay, it’s not officially summer until June 21 — but tell that to the weather. For years, I have always been a lover of winter. Layering on sweaters and scarves, and putting on my boots is the fun part. And, of course, there are Thanksgiving and Christmas — two of my favorite holidays. I still love them, but summer is starting to climb the ladder to the top of my list for seasons. In the past few years, we have had some harsh winters. As harsh as they could get in Georgia, and I’m still scratching my head at the near 12 inches of snow that blanketed north Georgia a few short months ago. I didn’t think anything could get any crazier than Snowmageddon from a few years back, and boy was I wrong! So those out of character bouts of weather have made me long for a bit of warmer weather. And while we still have to talk about our

I

8

transition — or lack thereof — from spring to summer, it’s nice to feel the sun’s rays on my skin. Not only is the warmth a welcome friend, but the feeling around it. Summer is an exciting time because it begs you to get out more and experience the area. No longer is it too cold or gloomy, but it’s bright, it’s sunny and it’s fun. There are all kinds of festivals and concerts to attend, as well as vacations to take. I hope you’ll take advantage of this season and enjoy the most of what Cobb County has to offer. And if you’re looking for ideas for your summer fun, turn to page 24 for some inspiration. Also inside: a couple of great recipes that will elevate your summer parties; a peek inside Launch Awareness Fitness Studio; some pool envy with two luxuriously relaxing backyard pools and we’ll sweeten your taste buds with a feature on Lush Cakery. 10 NEWS & NOTEWORTHY

CVI carnival showcases impact of vision loss to attendees On April 26, the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) hosted its annual Night Visions fundraiser. About 150 people attended the upscale circus-themed evening, which featured silent and live auctions and roving carnival entertainment, including a palm reader, a juggler, a balloon artist and a stilt walker — complete with a six-foot white cane. Attendees tried their hand at carnival games, like giant Jenga, audio darts and a mobility maze. These games uniquely challenged guests’ non-visual senses with simulation goggles and blindfolds. This annual fundraiser supports CVI’s rehabilitation programs, which serve people of all ages impacted by vision loss in metro Atlanta and throughout Georgia. Mableton resident Reagan B. Hudson Jr. is a client at the Center for the Visually Impaired. Reagan was diagnosed with Glaucoma at 6 weeks old. By high school graduation, he was completely blind. He has been a client of CVI’s since 2016, participating in the center’s New View Adult Rehabilitation program which offers assistive technology training, keyboarding, braille, and strategies to maintain independence. On his experience with CVI, Reagan said “I have been going to CVI for a little more than a year and a half and I enjoy being there. I have been taking courses on computer training, activities of daily living, orientation and mobility, and even refreshing my braille. I

have gained a tremendous sense of independence, which is why I came to CVI, to be more independent. It has increased my computer skills and I am able to travel more. If there is anyone that is visually impaired out there looking for resources, I think it’s the best place you can go, for training and to gain independence.”

DuPre’s Antique Market has been a Marietta Square staple for decades when Michael Barie took over the famed market eight years ago. Based on his agreement with the family, Barie knew he would eventually need to change the market’s name. He also saw the opportunity to slowly expand the store’s offerings by adding new retailers who were artisans at their craft — be it jewelry, art, home furnishings or more. As a result, DuPre’s Antique Market has officially become Park West Vintage. “I have been very sensitive to the historic impact that DuPre’s Antique Market has had on Marietta and Atlanta. That is one of the reasons we not only participated in M2Trailfest, but also are petitioning the city to keep Lindsey O’Shields’ ‘Big Little Chickens’ rendering. The market was originally a seed and feed store, and I feel that the beautiful painting is a further nod to the building’s history and should be permanent,” said Barie. Park West Vintage will have a treasure trove of finds for the antique hunter, but also will feature one-of-a-kind vintage crafts from local artisans offering a range of furniture, collectables, lighting and more in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, Park West Vintage will continue to offer lighting design and repair and clock repair. Barie has plans to create a heritage display inside the store to pay homage to DuPre’s Antique Market. Park West Vintage is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with convenient free parking on the Marietta Square at 17 Whitlock Ave.

athryn Steed makes wedding cakes with pounds of sugar, flour and butter — and more joy than she can ever measure.

“Baking fills me with joy, especially when I get to watch brides see their cakes for the first time on their wedding day,” said Kathryn, the owner of Lush Cakery on the Marietta Square, which opened in February. ‘Kat,’ as she’s known to friends and clients, is the sole proprietor, ingredients-shopper, baker, decorator, dishwasher, bookkeeper, website and social media manager and delivery person for her innovative wedding cakes. “I do it all, right here, just me — a one-woman show,” she joked as she added the finishing touches on a sleek four-tier cake. It was one of more than a dozen cakes the 32-year-old self-described ‘foodie’ creates for discerning couples in a typical month. “I originally got into cakes by working at Baskin-Robbins when I was in high school. I made all their ice cream cakes for two years and pretty much ran it,” the former Rome resident

recalled. After high school, Kathryn pursued a business degree at Kennesaw State University, though she yearned to enroll in culinary school instead. Her mother wasn’t thrilled with that idea and steered her away from a career in food. “My mom didn’t think I’d do well in that,” she said. “She wanted me to stay in university and get my business degree, so that’s what I did.” With a marketing degree in hand, Steed landed a technology sales job with a large multinational company in Atlanta but quickly found herself miserable and unfulfilled. “It was just awful — sitting in a cubicle and talking to techie people all day long. My creative juices were completely shut down,” said Kathryn. “I dreaded going to work every morning. Life is too short to live like that, and I knew cubicle life wasn’t for me.” Kathryn left her corporate life and began waiting tables at a local restaurant. “I have a passion for food, not just baking,” she said. — continued on page 16

16 A friend introduced her to an East Cobb woman who made wedding cakes from home. “She was very successful and I apprenticed under her for a few years,” Kathryn said. “She took me under her wing and taught me everything I know. She also allowed me to use her kitchen as I started my own company, so I made cakes by day and waited tables at night.” Kathryn diligently saved her money. She also kept her eyes on the small Marietta storefront that eventually became home for her baking business. “Ever since I moved to Marietta I would walk through the square, the restaurants and farmers markets. I’d place my hands on this exact location and tell myself, ‘One day this will be mine.’ Four years later, here it is.” Her savings paid for renovating the space and the ovens, mixers, refrigerators and furnishings. “No loans. I did it on my own,” she said proudly. Kathryn meets with prospective brides and grooms on Thursday nights and Saturdays in her decorated tasting room where she serves a variety of sample cakes. “I love getting to know my clients and customizing their cakes perfectly to help create magical moments,” she said. Her creations range from simple and rustic to ornate, modern or trendy. “I get excited about things that I’m passionate about, and I love it when brides are excited about their cakes,” she said. Kathryn shops for supplies on Monday mornings when her shop is closed. She bakes on Tuesdays and fills the cakes on Wednesdays. Thursdays and Fridays are set aside to decorate her creations.

ASSISTED LIVING & MEMORY CARE

“Some cakes take an entire day to decorate. I love the process, especially when the brides ask for something unique because that challenges me,” Kathryn said. She personally delivers her cakes on Saturday afternoons to the wedding reception venues. “It’s the most stressful part of this business. Sometimes I have three or four cakes at a time in my SUV, and I’m the most careful driver in the world — but I’ve never had an accident,” she said. Her cakes have been widely photographed and featured in local wedding magazines. She works with a handful of wedding planners and is excited to see her business grow. “People are always going to get married, so I think there’s stability,” she said. Kathryn created cakes for 155 weddings in 2017 and sees her business steadily growing. “I love coming here every day, knowing it’s something I built after almost nine years. Sometimes people say to me, ‘Oh you’re so young to have this business all on your own.’ They see the success but they don’t see the journey that led here. They didn’t see me when I was waiting tables at night, working two jobs,” Kathryn said. “Five years from now I’d like to have at least one person working with me in the shop during the week and helping me deliver on Saturdays. I enjoy delivering the cakes and seeing the vision all come together and I’d hate to not be there when brides see their cakes. But I’d also love to be in the shop on Saturdays when the Square is the busiest. I want to become more a part of this community,” she continued. She sells French macarons and cake pops for walk-in customers, as well as single slices of wedding cake in a variety of flavors. “Everyone gets so excited about wedding cake, and now you can have a slice of wedding cake every day,” she said. n

Remove the husks of the corn but leave the core attached at the end so you have something to hold onto. Grill the corn on a hot grill or cast iron griddle pan until slightly charred. Turn it so it gets cooked evenly all over. Mix the mayonnaise, sour cream or Mexican crema and cilantro together. Grate the Parmesan in another bowl. While the corn is still warm, slather with mayonnaise mix. Squeeze lime juice over the corn and shower with Parmesan. Season with chili powder and serve with extra lime wedges.

H

osting an outdoor party on the balcony or in the backyard has often involved a run to the big-box store for utilitarian paper goods and plastic plates, and setting the table with a mishmash of random bowls and tea lights. But this summer there’s a range of decor and serveware with the more sophisticated look and feel of indoor-quality goods — part of a growing trend toward blurring indoor/ outdoor decor lines.

“Outdoor spaces should really be thought of as an extension of your living room, and that definitely applies to entertaining,” says Kara Smith of SFA Design, a bicoastal luxury design firm. “The furnishings should be as approachable as the interior, so that guests feel comfortable.” A look at some of what designers and retailers are offering: Article.com has a teak and powder-coated-steel dining table with midcentury modern/industrial style that could live indoors as well as out. The Bali pendant light looks like rattan, but is really hardy, woven synthetic fiber; a weatherproof rubber insulates the power cord. Anthropologie’s new outdoor collection includes a woven, natural, blue-and-white rattan bar cart, table and chairs that evoke a chic French outdoor café. Here, too, British designer Tracey Boyd’s Twill and Atlas ceramic side tables, with interesting geometric patterns. Digital printing and improved materials and manufacturing are giving us wonderful new indoor/ outdoor rugs that are a far cry from the slippy, cheap-looking plastic mats of a few years back. Frontgate has the hip, geometric color-block Halia rug that’s colorfast and stain-resistant. Yet the hand-tufted, looped pile makes for a soft, plush feeling underfoot. Also here, a sea green and blue abstract design rug inspired by a slice of agate. Extending the mineral theme: a Palm Springs-style dining table crafted of Brazilian blue quartz on a sleek steel base. Or evoke the British West Indies with the Montserrat dining chair, inspired by traditional wing chairs but built of cast aluminum and outdoor-worthy woven materials and finishes. One of the biggest trends in outdoor decor, and a boon to al

fresco home entertaining, is deep, comfortable seating. We’re seeing roomy sofas and chairs with all the style and finish chops of indoor furniture. RH Modern has the Balmain collection, designed by Australian brothers Harrison and Nicholas Condos. Inspired by the lines of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the modern, minimalist pieces include sofas, swivel chairs and ottomans, with either teak or aluminum frames, and can be custom-covered in hundreds of performance-grade fabrics. Another chic option at RH Modern: the Positano chair. Milan-based Toan Nguyen created a contemporary twist on basket-weave with an oversize, woven teak frame that makes a comfy lounger for an entertaining-oriented outdoor space. Anchoring the outdoor entertainment zone with furniture and a rug is important, but don’t forget lighting. Lamps Plus has a chandelier with a weathered-zinc finish and a trio of seeded-glass shades for a soft illumination. At Uttermost, find a collection of hand-carved slate and hammered copper indoor/outdoor table lamps by designer Carolyn Kinder of St. Petersburg, Florida. Tableware is another area where manufacturing advancements have led to higher quality outdoor products. Los Angeles-based Merritt has a collection of marble-printed dinnerware that closely resembles the real thing, with heft and pattern depth we haven’t associated with melamine before. A botanical print edged with a bamboo motif has the look and feel of fine china. World Market has acrylic highball glasses that look like cut crystal, and there are elegant champagne and wine glasses here too. n — Wire reports

T

he weather is warm. School is out. And you’re itching to venture outside to soak up some rays. But what to do? Don’t think because we’re inland that we’re void of options in Cobb. Cobb is robust with activity throughout the year, but really comes alive in the summer. We’ve highlighted a few options you have to get out and explore. Thrills and Squeals It’s no secret what the biggest attraction is in Cobb. That honor belongs to Six Flags Over Georgia — 275 Riverside Parkway, SW, Austell — which had an economic impact of $371.9 million in 2017, according to Cobb Travel & Tourism. And after more than 50 years, the park has not lost its appeal to the masses. Guests of all ages will enjoy the many dining spots, rollercoasters, carousel and the many shows held in the park. Only five years old, Hurricane Harbor is a great way to have some adventure, while cooling off in the scorching Georgia heat. And the sweet deal is that Hurricane Harbor is included free with general park admission. New this year is the Twisted Cyclone, which is a combination of wood and steel into one adrenaline-pumping roller coaster. *Note: if you purchase your ticket online, you could save up to $20 versus buying in-person at the gate. From Marietta’s Theatre On The Square, to The Lyric Theatre, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and Marietta Theatre Company — parents and kids will have plenty to experience. And for those who would like a more hands-on experience, many acting camps are held throughout the county, giving a chance to set foot on stage. So pick a night and enjoy a local show with local actors who you may know well. For visual art lovers, you’re also in luck. Cobb is full of amazing art galleries showcasing some fantastic pieces of artwork created by local artists. There’s always an exhibition happening to peruse the work of these creators. And on the first friday of each month now through November, you can experience many of them with the Marietta Square Art Walk. Not only are the galleries and artists represented, but there’s plenty of food and musical entertainment as well. It’s a self-guided tour, so you can take your time and stroll along to not only visit the vendors along the way, but make sure to stop in the local galleries who are participating. There’s been an uptick in ‘escape rooms’ around the metro area and Cobb is no stranger to the phenomenon! The premise is the simple — gather your family, friends or even co-workers and do your best to remember the skills you learned by watching hours of cop dramas on television. Each team at Ultimate Escape Game Atlanta, 3200 Cobb Galleria Parkway, Suite 150, has 60 minutes to “escape” a locked room full of clues. Teamwork is key to solving the mystery — along with logic, reasoning and puzzle-solving skills. And if you dare there are several escape rooms in Cobb to try out and test your best detective skills. A Foodie Paradise

Grab a Glass! The 21 and older crowd can enjoy a nice, cold craft beer at one of the many local breweries in the county — Red Hare Brewing Co., Burnt Hickory Brewery, Southern Sky Brewing Co., Dry County Brewing Co. and Ironmonger Brewing. Not only can it be an educational trip, as many offer tours of their facility, but also a time to unwind and chat with friends and strangers. Many of the breweries also feature tastings and tap rooms great for gathering on a Friday night. If you’re adventurous and want to make a day of it, just remember to have a designated driver.

And if you ever wanted to sample several different restaurants on a customized foodie run — look no further than the Marietta Food Tours. The tours, one during the week and one on the weekend, visits multiple eateries on the Marietta Square and is a great way to get to know new friends and learn a bit of history about the city. Plus, your taste buds will thank you. Marietta Food Tours https://www.mariettafoodtours.com/

And just a short drive north on I-75 to Cartersville will take you to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery — 100 Busch Drive, NE, Cartersville — where you can experience a pop-up tour this summer. The pop-up tour will be June 1 to Sept. 2 on select Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is open to ages 13 and up, but the tasting portion is, of course, limited to patrons who are 21 and older. It lasts 60-90 minutes and gives a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process. Tickets are $25 for guests 21 and older and $10 for guests ages 13-20. or this exclusive Marietta property Todd Angel, owner of Paradigm Landscape, broke in some new design work for the project. Angel said the unique quality to this project is that such a unit has never been installed in an outdoor application — that being a lap pool/swim spa outside of the main pool structure. “We worked closely with the manufacturer out of Chicago to design and build this one of a kind swim spa,” he said. “Typically swim units are installed within the main body of water. The way we built this pool allows our clients to use the swim spa year round without effecting the larger pool.” The homeowners reached out to Angel with the hopes of building something large enough for their family and friends to enjoy, as well as the ability to swim laps for exercise purposes. The design, which also features several streaming waterfall features is perfect for a late night swim — that can be both relaxing and still help burn those pesky calories. “Our pool area is exactly what we needed. We use our pool everyday in one way or another and are very happy with the outcome.” It took about three months to design and a little over a year to install. Angel said sometimes they have to slow down their clients’ expectations on time especially with large-scale projects such as this. “Keep that in mind when you start your planning,” he said. “Allow time to get the design right, allow time for permitting, then allow time for the project. Keep in mind that anything worth having is worth waiting for and doing it right once to enjoy for a lifetime is worth the time and effort.”

Surprisingly, you may not have to come up with much of a down payment at all! Sometimes, buyers are allowed to borrow gift funds from a friend or family member. ut of the blue one day, Heather Brian said her husband Jason exclaimed they ‘needed a pool!’ Not that they didn’t have ample space. Their Kennesaw home featured plenty of space in the backyard that was prime for some expansive landscaping and rejuvenation. And while the 3/4 of an acre of space was nice, the sloping hill made it difficult to even begin to think of what to do with it. So when Jason brought up the idea of the pool, it gave the couple something to seriously consider. Especially since the Brians were having drainage issues and the sloping hill was becoming more of a liability than an asset. “We sat on it (the idea of a pool) and then finally in June of 2017 we went to Jacksonville and stayed in an Airbnb that had a pool,” said Heather. “The kids swam every morning and didn’t even want to go to the beach.” After that trip, they decided to take the leap and began canvassing the neighborhoods asking for recommendations. Armed with research, they settled on a company based in Cumming thanks to a stellar review from a friend. When it came down to design, Jason made a sketch of what the family would like and the company nailed it head on, said Heather. “We knew we wanted to use the slope of our yard and use the existing part of the hill, and we were able to get what we wanted,” she said. For an added bonus, the pool features not one, but two waterfalls and a landscape company provided a great rock feature that blends the structure in with nature. The heated saltwater pool was completed in January and is eight feet deep — three and a half feet on the shallow end. JUNE 2018 • COBB LIFE

“We had a lot of friends over for Masters Sunday — one of my husband’s favorite days of the year — and we heated the pool to 85 degrees. There were 25 kids in the pool, while the adults were huddled outside in the cold,” said Heather. The heated feature makes it convenient to use year-round and is perfect when the kids get bored in cooler weather. Other features include color changing lights that Heather said were worth the upgrade, especially for holidays. n

ost of us commit to working out with a body goal in mind — we want to lose a certain amount of weight, firm up some muscles, or fit back into a certain size clothing. Sometimes we hit the gym after coming to the realization that we need to get moving to live fuller, longer lives. But while most forms of exercise lead to better mental health, it’s not often a consideration at the top of the list when deciding where and how to get fit. While grinding it out at the gym may have its benefits, it’s usually not the ideal place to tune your mind alongside your body. There are typically TV screens flashing in your eyes, music blasting through your earphones, the whirring and clinking of equipment, and let’s be honest — sometimes musty aromas and unwanted advances to contend with. And, for some of us, our minds are preoccupied with trying to figure out exactly how the machines work and worrying if we’re exercising properly. At Launch Awareness Fitness Studio in Kennesaw, co-owner Kelli Carraway wants to instill in clients what she knows to be true: that mental and emotional wellness goes hand in hand with physical wellness. “If you’re aware of your thoughts and you can shift your thoughts to being more positive, your body follows,” Kelli said. “And you start feeling better within yourself.” The tranquility and sense of community at Launch is

palpable. Sunlight streams through the huge windows in the airy studio. A prayer board is full of tacked-on papers of requests, well-wishes and gratitude. As I wait for Kelli in the cozy reception area, clients streaming in for the next class greet me, ask if I’m a newcomer and offer to help me get set up with a yoga mat. Heather Couch, who has been taking classes at Launch for over a year, says the friendly atmosphere is partly why she came back after her first visit. “When I first came here, it wasn’t intimidating. People would talk to me, and that raised my comfort level. It’s very inclusive and that comes from the instructors, too,” the Acworth resident said. Launch has an assortment of classes: Pilates, TRX Training, Qigong, rowing, rolling for self-care (using a foam roller and balls for self-massage and pain relief) and a number of yoga classes, including aerial yoga, which is based on traditional yoga principles using a hammock as a prop. They also offer personal and small group training. Heather takes two or more classes most days of the week, and appreciates the blend of cardio, strength training and stretching to increase flexibility. She’s seen changes in her body physically, but the biggest impact has been the mental shift she’s experienced.

As someone with a high-stress career who has suffered bouts of depression, Heather said she now finds it easier to calm herself and push through difficult challenges. She’s also become less focused on reaching a certain look physically and stopped comparing herself to others. She’s paying more attention to how she feels and celebrating achievements in her new goals — being able to do or hold certain poses longer. “What I have learned here is this is my practice. I no longer worry if the person beside me is going faster than I am,” she said. “I’m becoming more aware of what my body can do. If I can go into the upward dog pose a little bit more than I did last week that makes me feel good. I might not be able to do a handstand or some of the funky things you see on Instagram, and I’m okay with that — a year ago, I was not. Now my focus is to be healthier, stronger and live longer.” Heather credits the instructors at Launch for that growth, and for keeping her disciplined in what she now considers more than just a workout — it’s a lifelong practice. Committing to your wellbeing no matter how busy or stressful life is, or even if you have an injury or problem areas, is important, Kelli said. Classes at Launch are designed to be available to everyone, no matter the body type, skill level or age; exercises can be modified for those who need it. So if you’re having a low-energy day, or feeling pain, you can still attend a class. “You can go to qigong and do meditative moment, or do a few yoga poses then lie in savasana, or come to an aerial class and lay in the hammock for 45 minutes — it’s totally okay if that’s what you want to do, no one is going to force you to do something,” she said. “It’s more about giving yourself permission to feel how you feel and doing something about it.” It’s also imperative to take the time to clear your mind and be present in the moment. “It’s important to give yourself this hour, to hang your stress and thoughts at the door,” Kelli said. — continued on page 40

Focusing on your mind and being aware of what your body can do doesn’t mean the workouts aren’t also rigorous. “The classes are challenging, and the instructors are very well trained — you don’t find that everywhere,” said Jenny Brink, a Kennesaw resident. The Pilates class in particular has helped her physically, she said. “My core was very weak. I couldn’t lift up from the floor when I started and now I can easily do it.” Jaci Sorg, also of Kennesaw, said she appreciates the personal attention from instructors and the atmosphere at Launch. “I don’t like going to the gym because I don’t feel comfortable there,” said Jaci. “At Launch I feel comfortable and safe, and I get everything I need in a workout,” she said. “The instructors are great at helping you. If you have an injury or problem they will show you how to modify the exercise and even keep reminding you to be aware.” Aerial yoga is among Jaci’s favorites, because of the euphoria it brings to a challenging workout. “You feel like an acrobat, it’s very freeing,” she said. “You also feel very childlike, and that’s pleasing to my soul. I love coming here; it makes me want to do better for my overall health. It completes me in mind, body and spirit.” n

Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identification of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the fitting of hearing aids.

“We are employing a like method in our diagnostic sound booths using a sound field speech in noise procedure,” said Dr. Gabriel Pitt of Optimal Hearing Systems. “This test simulates hearing in a noisy crowd. We are able to determine maximum speech understanding by frequency shaping this new hearing aid.” The results have been amazing. For the first time, a patient is able to realize the exact amount of improvement in speech comprehension while in noisy listening environments.

42 KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

T

he Marietta Educational Garden Center held its always-popular Glory in the Garden fundraiser April 28 on its majestic grounds, welcoming nearly 260 guests and impeccable spring weather. MEGC Executive Director Kate Millholland said the event, which featured a farm-to-table theme (with the aptly-named caterer Farm to Table serving up beautiful fare) and live music from local band Simply Southern, drew 16 sponsors and raised more than $14,000 for MEGC. The center, located on Kennesaw Avenue and anchored by the circa-1852 antebellum home, Fair Oaks, provides a home for the area’s 19 garden clubs as well as educational opportunities for the community. The evening was simply divine, with new Katy Ruth Camp friendships forming and old friendships growing. But the night would be remiss without mentioning the ever-competitive table decorating contest. And when I say it is competitive, I mean it as some of this year’s judges mentioned there was food thrown their way last year by one particular losing table! They noted, however, that it was all in (competitive) fun. This year’s contest included winners in three categories: Best Themed Table (Farm to Table), Best Corporate Sponsor Table and Judges’ Choice. Congratulations to the W.D. Little Mortgage Corp. table by Mary Ansley Southerland and Lettie Primeaux for winning Best Corporate Sponsor Table with its gorgeous floral lanterns; the

42

“Booz Farm” table with a Fisher Price red barn, cows and airplane bottles by Kelie Crowe, Gaye Giddens, Fran Biddle, Martha Dodd, Ginger Collier, Anna Wolfe, Susan Silvers and Melody Whelan of the English Laurel Garden Club; and to all of my friends (Katelyn Ledford, George and Jayne Warren, Betsy Throop, Carson Howell, Andrew Young and Melanie Turner) who helped me execute my eclectic vision for our very Anthropologie-esque table (complete with old books, lots of flowers and even a mini farm), which won the Judges’ Choice Award. A special thank you goes to Mary Beth Clotfelter and the Laurel Heritage Garden Club, who donated the table to me to fill with friends. *** Taste of Marietta was held on April 29 and brought all the taste buds in the (Marietta) land to feast on hundreds of treats and dishes. The festival, which drew nearly 80,000 people this year, has a history of also welcoming quite a bit of rain but this year’s sunshine drew the crowds and made life easier on everyone from the employees of the Marietta Visitors Bureau to the vendors to the guests wanting a cold beer and good food on a semi-hot day. Our friends in the band Coast Guard closed the festival with a performance of so many fun, hit songs from past to present and the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre’s fourth floor patio welcomed a steady stream of visitors looking for booze and views. The festival is held the last Sunday of April each year, so go ahead and mark your 2019 calendars for April 28. And if you were the person who did the rain dance to keep the rain away this year, you must be quite talented and I thank you for finally letting me leave my umbrella at home. n

“C.B. Strike” begins June 1, 10 p.m. ET on Cinemax “C.B. Strike” is a war veteran turned private detective who operates out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, his unique insight and background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving complex crimes that have baffled the police. It is based on the bestselling novels written by “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Tom Burke (“Only God Forgives”) stars as private detective Cormoran Strike and Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”) stars as Robin Ellacott, his new assistant and protégé, in the show, which is produced in association with BBC One.

‘Dietland’ “Dietland” begins June 4, 9 p.m. on AMC

The extraordinarily timed series unveils one woman’s journey to self-awakening while exploring a multitude of issues faced by women today — including patriarchy, misogyny and unrealistic beauty standards. Filmed on location in New York City, the 10-episode series follows Plum Kettle, ghost-writer for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines, as she struggles with self-image and sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-acceptance. At the same time, everyone is buzzing over news reports about men, accused of sexual abuse and assault, who are disappearing and meeting untimely, violent deaths. | Facebook: www. facebook.com/DietlandAMC; Twitter: @DietlandAMC; Instagram: @dietlandamc; Hashtag: #Dietland n Following the show will be a companion talk show, “Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler.” The unscripted series hosted by Tyler (“Criminal Minds,” “Archer”) will air live on Mondays beginning June 4, immediately following episodes of “Dietland.” The first episode of “Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler” will air June 4 at 11 p.m., and will then move to its regular weekly timeslot of 10 p.m. the following week. Unlike a conventional after show confined to the companion series itself, it will feature Tyler leading a topical discussion around the broader, female-centric issues and themes that “Dietland” explores.

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. “Alone” begins June 14, 10 p.m. on History Second chances don’t come often, but this season on “Alone” it’s all about redemption as former participants of History’s hit nonfiction survival series return in season five. Dropped off in Northern Mongolia, the most remote location yet, the 10 survivalists will be separated by miles and endure brutal, subzero temperatures, deadly predators and punishing isolation, as they push themselves once more to their limits. After coming up short in their respective seasons, these men and women have even greater motivations and well-planned strategies for survival. They must build their own shelters, hunt their own food, and overcome numerous deadly obstacles — such as the venomous Siberian Pit Viper and feral wolves — if they want to be the last person standing. With 10 survival tools each, enough camera gear to self-document their experiences and a cash prize of $500,000 on the line, season five will bring higher stakes, impressive levels of ingenuity and a greater desire to succeed than ever before. No camera crew. No gimmicks. “Alone” is the utmost test of human will and fierce determination to overcome the elements. This season, who will have the strength to endure the longest and win the ultimate prize?
