EARLY 13 YEARS AGO, I WAS A FISH OUT OF WATER in my pencil skirt and white button-down blouse, shifting uncomfortably in my new patent-leather heels on the concrete floor of a place I don’t find myself often – the paint color samples aisle of Home Depot. As an intern for the Marietta Daily Journal company, spending my summer home from my journalism studies at the University of Georgia, I was tasked by the front office to come up with color scheme ideas for a new publication the company was developing. Working title: Cobb Life Magazine. Fast-forward 13 years and I’m now finding myself scouring through hundreds of fonts and magazines, developing story ideas, directing photo shoots and working with our new designer, Robin Harrison, to create this vision of a new Cobb Life that I have swirling through my mind. While there are a thousand-and-one ideas and changes I have in mind for this and future issues, it isn’t lost on me that I am so fortunate to pour the love I have for our community into the love that radiates from this issue’s pages. I live here. I work here. I dine here. I sing here. I give back here. Cobb is my community, just as it is yours and anyone else who is lucky enough to make it their own. My goal is that this new vision – as ambitious and adventurous as it might seem - will bring with it many other new opportunities. Our annual “Best Of Cobb” contest will explode next year with new categories, new ways of voting and even a celebration party at the launch of the special issue in March. Stories of wonderful people and businesses and culture and experiences will be given new life. Those of us who already know how great our community is will be proud of it, and those who don’t know, soon will. The journey has just begun, but I encourage you to join us, support us and engage with us as we embark on this new creation, building on the success of the past. And if you see me standing in the paint colors aisle of Home Depot, well, now you know.

THE TOWN MARIETTA BRINGS BLANK WALLS TO LIFE WITH LONG-AWAITED MURAL ART STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

HE BLANK, OLD, BRICK WALLS in downtown Marietta might appear dated and dingy to some, but a cadre of artists think they make an ideal canvas for bright murals that tell stories and bring smiles to all who pass by - perhaps also bringing new life to the historic town square in the process. Colorful murals along railroad tracks, side streets and alleys on and around the Marietta Square are helping affirm the town as a destination for artists of all kinds, notes Lindsey Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shields, a third-generation painter and

scenic artist who organized the Marietta Mural Project for the first-ever Mountain to River (M2R) TrailFest, which took place on April 14 and 15. Together with her daughter Stokes, she reached out to other scenic artists in the region and invited them to partici-

pate. She and the Marietta Arts Council secured the city’s blessings, building and business owner permissions, financial donations and supplies for the artists. “The project perfectly pairs with what Marietta is all about,“ Stokes explained. “People are looking for a specific quality of life when they live here. Everyone knows and supports each other’s projects, and creative expression thrives.” The mother-daughter duo painted two murals for the project, the first being the chickens on the side of the DuPre’s Antiques wall on Whitlock Avenue. “It was once a feed and seed and that inspired me to paint chickens having a bite to eat. I thought it would be fun to make them big, a nod to the Big Chicken,” Lindsey said. Their second mural can be found on Church Street on the side of the Historic Marietta Trolly Co., painted from a vintage photo of McPherson’s Tire Shop that was owned by a relative many decades ago.

13 “Marietta has been in a transitional state of trying to rebrand itself for several years,” noted Atlanta painter and public art advocate Lauren Stumberg, who created the “Two Magpies” mural behind dk Gallery on the Square. She applauded the innovative people behind the push for more street art and was thrilled that the community has embraced public art with enthusiasm, seeing “the power of art as a tool for revitalization.” Olga Sidilkovskaya and Lea Cochran painted “May-retta” on the rear wall of Two Birds Taphouse, where they work, with the intent of being inclusive of everybody. “I’ve met many people in their twenties who have moved here from elsewhere - different states and even abroad,” Sidilkovskaya observed from her vantage point as a bartender. “There is so much beauty in diversity. We wanted to show people enjoying the lovely town of Marietta in different ways. The town’s attitude toward people of various backgrounds - including the LGBTQ community - is increasingly accepting, especially among the millennials. It is becoming more metropolitan, which makes it a desirable location to live for people of all backgrounds.”

• ‘THE NEXT GENERATION’ • “Even though Marietta is rich in historical notoriety, I wanted to embrace the next generation of youthful excitement,” explained Craig Stanley, a scenic artist in the entertainment industry who created the geometric “Marietta” mural along the railroad tracks west of the town square. “The colors inside the geometric shapes represent colorful diversity of the people, their love of the arts and a bright new energy created by the citizens,” said Stanley, who moved to Marietta from Kansas City in 1998 to attend art school. Though he graduated as a graphic designer and Illustrator, he found work painting backdrops for major music labels, television commercials and feature films. “I noticed an appreciation and passion for the arts while in the Square, visiting several art galleries,” he said. "While painting the mural, I also met several musicians, dancers, photographers, painters, singers and writers. I watched toddlers walk up to touch the bright colors. We had graduates celebrating their academic accomplishments by taking pictures next to it. A bride and groom starting their new life together having wedding pictures against it. Then some of the older citizens slowly walked up just to say thank you. That let me know what the city of Marietta is made up of - the young

• FROM DOODLER TO A BIG WALL • Craig Ford, a Marietta artist whose work aligns with the ‘Pop Art’ genre, said he didn’t choose art - it chose him. “I’ve always been a doodler. In kindergarten, I had my drawing of Batman taken from me, either to show what fiveyear-olds were doing at the school or showing how comic books were destroying the moral fiber of small youth,” he joked. Ford jumped at the opportunity to paint silhouettes of theater-lovers queued along the outside of the town’s famous Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theater. Ford wanted to represent all the years since the Strand opened in the 1930s to the present day, “including teenagers from the 50s and 70s, a ‘Hippie Dude’ from the 60s and a punk rock couple from the early 80s,” Ford said. “It’s fun for me to see folks have their pictures taken with this mural as their backdrop. I think the ‘Hippie Dude’ with the peace sign may be the coolest one.”

• ‘MORE ARTISTS AND EASELS’ • Marietta artist McKenzie Snow hopes people feel the “peace, love, harmony and town’s good vibrations” in his mural version of the town’s famous Glover Park Fountain. “I tried to capture the ‘Art Nouveau’ style from hotel lobbies in the 1920s, and if people look carefully, they will see the word ‘LOVE’ in there.” Snow, who doesn’t believe in age and is mostly self-taught, moved from Atlanta to Marietta six years ago and makes his living painting historical buildings and street scenes. He worked day and night for a week to complete his mural, which graces the backside of Piastra in Atherton Square, a courtyard near Cool Beans Coffee Roasters Coffee Shop. “I mostly camped here, and I had friends come by to help. Those street lights were bright enough to work late into the night,” he said. “I wanted my inner spirit of peace to come through, and it makes me happy when I see people drink it in,” he added. “It’s great to see what’s going on in the art scene here, with people having fresh ideas and new ways of looking at things. In all great cities, you see artists, and now we’re seeing it here. But more artists need to be out with their easels and be seen.” Local organizers said they are hopeful that current wall art will remain until spring 2019, when new murals by different artists can be created.

YOU’VE EVER attempted to teach a child to ride a bike, then you know it can be a daunting task. We encourage children to start with training wheels, only to curse ourselves later as we spend endless evenings running by their sides, attempting to undo the dependence the training wheels created. This is exactly the dilemma Phillip Fuiza Lima found himself in in 2012 when teaching his three-year-old son to ride a bike. Driven to solve a problem and inspired to create the perfect training bike for his son, Fuiza Lima created a design for a “bike that grows.” Thus, Bamboo ARTiculation was born. A Marietta native and Lassiter High School graduate, Fuiza Lima was living in Brazil at the time he came up with the idea. Using a standard metal bike with training wheels to teach his son to ride was proving unsuccessful.

18 “My son learned to ride because the bike progressed as his skill level increased. I couldn’t find any bikes like that on the market at that time, so I decided to make one. That’s where the idea for the Bamboo-bini was born.” PHILLIP FUIZA LIMA

“When my son got his first bicycle, it did have training wheels and pedals, but I adapted the bike by removing them because I knew that it would be more difficult to un-train him from using training wheels,” Fuiza Lima said. “I believe that most, if not all, parents know of the challenges in taking off training wheels. It’s the fear of falling for both, and the stress that comes with that.”

Once his son mastered his balance and learned to stop himself, Fuiza Lima replaced the pedals. “My son learned to ride because the bike progressed as his skill level increased. I couldn’t find any bikes like that on the market at that time, so I decided to make one. That’s where the idea for the Bamboo-bini was born,” Fuiza Lima explained. Though the inspiration for the bike originated with his son, Fuiza Lima’s idea for using bamboo came from an article he’d read about two men who successfully pedaled from Alaska to Patagonia on bamboo bicycles. “Although I was working in the corporate world at the time, I’d always had the desire to be an entrepreneur,” he said. “After developing my initial design for the bike, I started researching bamboo like crazy. Living in Brazil, it was a product I was fairly familiar with because it is so widely used there. In my extended research, I attended bamboo conferences, and I learned that the first bamboo bike was patented in 1896. To my surprise, I learned that many of the first bikes were pedal-less.” So, with a fever for entrepreneurship, a design for a one-ofa-kind bicycle, and the perfect building materials, Fuiza Lima moved back to Marietta to start his company in 2016. The name, Bamboo ARTiculation, is derived from several factors: Fuiza Lima describes his bikes as functional art, integrating history and modern needs. The bikes themselves also articulate the company’s vision: “Making bamboo products with focus on being economically, socially, and environmentally responsible.” Each bike frame is made entirely of engineered laminated bamboo. “I use techniques to minimize waste. I’ve developed a system where I can create two bikes from one 4x8 sheet of bamboo,” Fuiza Lima said. If you think these bikes are just something pretty to look at, think again. Though beautiful, they are structurally designed so that the strength-to-weight ratio is higher than steel. Even the resin used to glue laminates together and finish the bamboo is made from non-toxic natural resources. The tires, wheels, chain, pedals and handlebar grips are similar to a regular bike,

He spends two hours with students, teaching them to ride the bamboo bike for just $50—a fee that can be applied to the purchase of the bike after the lesson. Fuiza Lima said, “I enjoy working with anyone learning to ride. These bikes are especially great for older children who haven’t learned to ride—it takes the embarrassment out of training wheels. I’ve also had great success training children with autism and down syndrome, as this bicycle is a wonderful tool for cognitive development. This “bike that grows” is designed for children ages three to seven years old. “It starts on the lowest seat and handlebar setting with no training wheels or pedals,” Fuiza Lima explained. It functions like a traditional balance bike and the seat and handlebars can be raised as your child grows. The bike is equipped with handlebar breaks that children can start using immediately or once they’ve mastered their balance and the act of stopping with their feet. What makes the Bamboo-bini unique is that, once children master the balance bike set-up, the frame can be flipped and pedals are added, transforming it into a traditional bicycle. As children learn to pedal and continue to grow, wheels can be upgraded from the standard 16-inch size to 20-inch. Fuiza Lima also offers custom framework, free shipping to the continental US for the first 30 pre-orders and free personal delivery for local clients. The Marietta Square Market, an 18,500-square-foot warehouse reclamation project bringing food and shopping options to historic Marietta, has announced two new additions to its food hall. Meat in the Middle and Lucky’s Burger & Brew will join nine previously-confirmed tenants, bringing the total number of eateries to 11. Meat in the Middle will feature Southern-influenced sandwiches, salads and sides. The restaurant will offer chicken, beef, pork and veggie sandwiches and will utilize locally-sourced ingredients to craft gourmet sandwiches. Lucky’s Burger & Brew, first established in 2010 in Roswell, will offer burgers, salads, wings and milkshakes. The restaurant in Marietta will be the restaurant’s fourth Atlanta location, joining its sister establishments in Roswell, Town Brookhaven and Emory Village. Brian Lee is affectionately known by hotel employees as their “Zen Chef ” and keeps things humble and simple, with flavors perfectly balanced. Lee trained at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School in California. He perfected his skills at several luxury hotels, including the St. Regis Hotels in San Francisco and Atlanta, the JW Marriott in Buckhead and Le Meridien in Dunwoody before coming to Vinings in 2017. “It’s not about me, it’s about keeping things fresh and local,” said Lee, who is as passionate about using locally-grown ingredients. “I’ve worked in luxury hotels and big box hotels. I wanted to work somewhere

I have freedom here to source out to local purveyors and change things up.” “I love to play with international flavors and be adventurous,” added Lee, who enjoys bringing his Korean culture and tastes to the table now than then. “I like to push boundaries as much as I can, but not so much that it’s unrecognizable.” Many local residents stop by for takeout dinners several times a week, often taking advantage of Lee’s weekly specials that aren’t on the regular menu, he said. “We don’t want this to be a stuffy environment; we want people to come in here and feel relaxed and casual,” Lee said. The Vinings neighborhood is passionate about supporting its local businesses and host “Spirited Dinner” parties for the local community. The dinner events – by invitation only and limited to 16 guests – feature spirit alcohol drinks rather than wine. The parties give Lee even more freedom to experiment with culinary ideas – “expressing myself on the plate,” he said. in California when he was only nine years old. His parents are first-generation immigrants from Korea, and his mother was a major influence in his cooking style. Taylor organizes and energizes the parties, and personally decides who receives an invitation for any given month. “The parties hum with the chatter of the lucky local diners and showcase a three-course dinner curated by the Chef Lee, with pairings such as Seafood Ceviche with a ‘Mexican Mule’ tequila, or a seared black cod from Alaska and kimchi fried rice with a Sipsmith Corpse Reviver. We have these dinner parties once a month and we keep it small. Otherwise, it ceases to be special and intimate,” she said. “We do see a lot of the same people who come month after month, but we also see new guests, and we love to watch their reaction as they try new entrees paired with new spirits,” Lee added. While the food is outstanding and the drinks intricately designed, the real star of the show is the atmosphere of fun, Taylor said. “It’s the kind of dinner party you would throw yourself with some close friends – if you were a chef,” she explained. While the bartenders love to show off their colorful cocktails, the restaurant also boasts a distinctive wine program. Interestingly, all of their wines are kegged instead of bottled. “That ensures each glass is fresh and not sitting on the back bar waiting for the next order,” Taylor said. The bar features ten wines on tap – five reds, three whites, a rose and prosecco – as well as a number of locally-brewed beers. “It’s the very essence of being part of the local flavor,” Taylor said. “This community is so tight-knit and that’s what we want to be a part of,” she added. “It’s not a destination restaurant where people fly in from Las Vegas to come and dine, it’s more where our local guests might come two times in a week for a nice quiet evening for good food and a drink, because they feel really comfortable.” Hotel Indigo is located at 2857 Paces Ferry Road SE in Vinings. Lee, when asked why he and his brother, Adam Lee, settled on the little metal box as the flagship shape of their Atlanta-based Bohemian Guitars. “I’m a firm believer, that for most start-ups…the story is most important part.” For the brothers Lee and their humble instruments, that story begins on the streets of South Africa. Born and raised in Johannesburg during a time when crime and poverty were on the rise, Shaun became infatuated with street musicians and the ingenuity borne from their desperate circumstances. “In the poor township areas, if you can’t afford to buy a guitar, you build a guitar. And that kind of mentality carried beyond guitars. That was [just] their lifestyle,” Shaun said. When Shaun was nine, his parents moved to east Cobb Marietta in an effort to provide their children with

more opportunities for their futures. The call of home never ceased, however, and neither did the unique appeal of the handmade instruments Shaun saw on return trips to his birthplace. On a fateful visit to visit family and regroup following

quitting a job he “couldn’t stand,” Shaun saw a musician playing a Castrol oil can and a broomstick, which inspired him to build one of his own. “[South Africans] kind of reinvented the guitar without even knowing it,” Shaun said, “so I was able to expand upon that.” From there, Shaun built the iconic guitars and displayed them at the various arts and crafts shows around Atlanta for years, building the Bohemian brand into what it is today: a thriving young business with international reach and revenues nearing on a million dollars. One key to Bohemian’s success, Shaun feels, is that he and Adam compliment each other with different skill sets. With a background in managing project teams in IT, Adam and his more analytical mind handle the business side of things, managing the finances and helping to grow the business, while Shaun and his more creative mind focus on the product itself and customer support. Together, they’ve turned Bohemian from a novel concept into a guitar maker with seven different models, each showcasing their own tone and style, from the “Moonshine” with two single coils pickups, to the “Surf Wax” with a P90, or the “Motor Oil” with dual humbuckers. Many of Bohemian’s guitars have found their way into the hands of famous players both local and infamous. Their cadre of famous aficionados boasts fans like Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and the indomitable Jeff Beck, whose song “O.I.L.” was actually inspired by the Boho gas can guitar used in the recording. Shaun cites musicians G. Love and the Special Sauce for helping to put the young guitar makers on the map, and artists like Hozier, who owns five of the instruments, and Athens musicians Family & Friends for elevating Bohemian’s presence by putting the guitars through their paces on stage. While Shaun’s background in startups tends to inform more of his business sense, he also credits industry veteran

Chris Martin of Martin Guitars, “who really embraces small business in the industry,” and the National Association of Music Merchants Trade Show for helping to steer Bohemian in the right direction. “Larger brands are stuck in their ways,” Shaun said, while companies like Martin are helping to guide young talent like Bohemian by example. Approaches like this are part of Bohemian’s growth strategy going forward. “We see our own website as the place where we need to focus most of our energy,” said Shaun, as the music industry moves further and further into the virtual shopping space. Understanding that many musicians are still try-it-before-youbuy-it people, he said that Bohemian is developing a physical distribution strategy with new retailers in North and South America, and hope to have things rolling out by the end of the year to match their already-extensive international reach and establish a presence in chains like Sam Ash and Urban Outfitters. “We’re a guitar company for the modern musician,” said Shaun, highlighting that Bohemian is sustainability-conscious in partnering with Trees for the Future, which plants trees in Sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to using reclaimed woods for the guitar necks and partially-recycled materials for the custom-built metal guitar bodies. “We care more about how you as an individual connect with our instruments, as opposed to a generic guitar,” he added. How does a small fish like Bohemian stay afloat in such a large pond without losing its story? “There’s 500 guitar manufacturers in the U.S. and 90 percent of them look the same,” Shaun said, with confidence. “If we were to deviate from the can, the story would become irrelevant. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is a musical romantic comedy follow-up to the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, which is based on the musical of the same name. Ten years after the events of “Mamma Mia!” on the Greek island of Kalokairi, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is pregnant with Sky’s child while running her mother’s villa. Self-conflicted because she can’t do it by herself, but with Tanya and Rosie’s guidance, Sophie will find out more of Donna’s past and how she came to start up her villa, met each one of Sophie’s dads (Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colin Firth), and raised a daughter, bravely all on her own, without a mother to guide her – with an unexpected visit from someone she had not invited or expected to see: her grandmother, Ruby Sheridan. Directed and written by Ol Parker, from a story by Parker, Catherine Johnson, and Richard Curtis, the film stars Meryl Streep, Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper and Cher. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” will be released July 20 by Universal Pictures, ten years to the month of the original film’s release.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics characters Scott Lang (with his superhero alter ego, Ant-Man) and Hope van Dyne (also known as Wasp). Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, and the twentieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is grappling with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father. Approached by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and her father, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Lang must once again don the Ant-Man suit and fight alongside the Wasp. The urgent mission soon leads to secret revelations from the past as the dynamic duo finds itself in an epic battle against a powerful new enemy. The film is directed by Peyton Reed and written by the writing teams of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. The film also stars Michael Peña, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Randall Park, Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” premieres July 6.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” is an upcoming action spy film written, produced and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who becomes the first person to direct more than one film in the franchise. It is the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. This time, when an IMF mission ends badly, the world is faced with dire consequences. As Ethan Hunt takes it upon himself to fulfill his original briefing, the CIA begins to question his loyalty and his motives. Hunt finds himself in a race against time, hunted by assassins and former allies while trying to prevent a global catastrophe. The film stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin, and Sean Harris who all reprise their roles from previous films, with Henry Cavill, Wes Bentley, Vanessa Kirby, Sian Brooke, and Angela Bassett joining the franchise. Cavill’s role in the film receives quite a bit of attention, and the “Man of Steel” star seems poised to make his character a daunt-

ing foil to Cruise’s secret agent. The trailer also previewed more of the famous stunt sequences that have made the Mission: Impossible franchise so popular. The film will be released July 27.

TIPS FOR LIVING

On the day Nora discovered that her husband, Hugh, had gotten another woman pregnant, she made a vow — I will come back to life no matter how long it takes. It’s taken Nora three years. With the help of her best friend, she fled New York City for a small resort town, snagged a job as the advice columnist for the local paper, and is cautiously letting a new man into her life. But when Hugh and his perfect new family move into a house nearby, Nora backslides. Coping with jealousy, humiliation, and resentment again is as hard as she feared. It’s harder still when Hugh and his wife are shot to death in their home. If only Nora could account for the night of the murders. Unfortunately, her memories have gone as dark as her fantasies of revenge. But Nora’s not the only one with a reason to kill — and as prime suspect in the crime, she’d better be able to prove it. Author Renée Shafransky is a writer and psychotherapist with a background in theater and film. “Tips for Living,” to be released by Lake Union July 31, is her first novel.

CASTLE ROCK

Hulu’s next big release is a psychological horror series from producer J.J. Abrams and best-selling author Stephen King. As the title suggests, Castle Rock is set in the “Stephen King multiverse” — many of his works take place in that fictional Maine small town — though it tells a new, original story. The town first appeared in King’s novel “The Dead Zone” and has been featured in several of his works since. There are a few obvious nods to King’s multiverse — Shawshank seems to play at least a supporting role, with a photo of Warden Norton briefly visible, and you might even catch a glimpse of the number 237. Scott Glenn will be a series regular in the role of Alan Pangborn, a retired sheriff who appeared in the novels “Needful Things” and “The Dark Half.” André Holland will star in the series as Henry, a death row attorney with a complex back story. Other cast members include Sissy Spacek (the original Carrie), Melanie Lynskey, and Bill Skarsgard, who played the evil clown Pennywise in the 2017 film adaptation of “It.” The first three episodes of Castle Rock will premiere on Hulu on July 25.

“THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED IN THIS TOWN.” “No — the best thing that ever happened in this town was a half-naked man in shiny pants getting dropped out of a box. That’s No. 1 on the list; this is No. 2.” “This is the second-best thing that’s ever happened in this town.” With mutual nods, our walking troop proceeded south from what we call the Square in mid-April, during the M2R TrailFest. Where did this path go from here? “Straight to the Chattahoochee.” The present members of the Kiwanis Under-Forty (U40) Club silently agreed that we’d stop and turn around before getting that far. A few years ago, back when there was only one coffee shop on the Marietta Square, I worked for a while at that coffee shop. The back door of that coffee shop opened up to a courtyard: a space surrounded on four sides by the backs of street-facing shops. The patio was covered in worn-smooth pavers. Iron tables and chairs were scattered under tall, generous trees. The unruly roots of the old trees felt like hands reaching up from under the bricks to hold you close and safe under their shade. And the patio attracted all the best sorts of people: artists and musicians, chess players and Bible clubs, friends and families and “train kids” and teenagers who would leave their half-drunk Gatorade containers in small towers of prosaic trash, neon altars to their incurable apathy. One day, when I stepped out the back door of the shop to collect cigarette butts and other offal, I saw something surprising. Up on the second floor of a white brick building was a strange and wonderful little mural. I guess it was no more than six feet tall by three feet wide. It’s hard now to remember exactly what it looked like — it’s been years since it was painted there and almost as long since it was scrubbed from the wall. When I close my eyes, I can imagine what I think I saw: a sort of blue-grey blob-shaped character… big eyes… some shape… was it yellow? Pink? Even when I squinch my eyes closed as hard as I can and look into the milky blackness on the backs of my eyelids, it won’t come to me. I’ve lost it. All I remember is that it was brilliant and playful and it definitely wasn’t supposed to be there.

57 The patio looks different now. The old trees are gone, replaced by sprightly new specimens “more appropriate for the park, less likely to tear up the plumbing under the shops.” The old pavers are gone, replaced by new bricks that are too squared at the corners, making up an undeniably safer but more glaring floor. A hunky electrical box — a piece of equipment that before the revitalization was decently obscured by shrubs and a garden of pansies — sits awkwardly naked, now, in the middle of Atherton Square. It makes me uncomfortable. Every time I come up on the thing, I feel like I’ve opened an unlocked Porta-John to find somebody’s grandpa with his trousers stuck around his ankle socks. And, on this day (the second-best day in the recent history of the town, as far as we can tell), it seems that every person made a personal decision to pretend like they didn’t see the naked electrical box. On this day, it was easy to ignore because there was so much more to enjoy. The Mayor shook hands with Patsy Cline before cutting a ribbon in the park. Dancing nymphs carrying streamers drifted carefully through the maze of people crowded ‘round. A family posed to have their picture taken with a Queen in a frilly getup. And everybody had their dogs. Little dogs in harnesses, big dogs on long leashes, happy Pits, teensy Yorkies and pairs of Greyhounds, all with happy pink tongues out, lapping at the sunshine. All the city’s favorite characters came out of hibernation and onto the trail for the promise of art and magic there. Familiar buildings were re-born as canvases. The back of the art gallery was dripping with bold blue and magenta shapes, yielding the outlines of sweet birds. Outside of Dupre’s, children took turns posing against a depiction of a jaunty baby chick, turning their hands up so that the perspective of the photo made it look like they were sure to be squashed underfoot. “We sponsored the peach!” Our friendly neighbor who runs the market gleamed while a commissioned artist rolled soft, warm paint to finish the belly of a gigantic split stone fruit showing its pit. We walked, smiling uncontrollably, along the railroad tracks, past evocative sculptures and past rows of mounted photographs hanging along the fence. We walked past the backs of parking lots, marveling at the wildflowers there. We walked over a new bridge until we came up on the Confederate Cemetery. We walked North along the tracks, past the Episcopal Church’s parking lot where friendly men sitting in lawn chairs waved at us from behind the silhouette of a handsome antique automobile. We walked over a less-new bridge, past the Brumby, down Church Street, and over to Sessions. On Sessions Street, the Watermelon House hosted a real-life barbershop quartet, whose members taught tags to anyone willing to participate in their front-porch harmonies, while the house’s treasured keeper (here for a spell from her other home out of town) poured cups of sparkling lemonade to anyone who stopped inside to get out of the sun.

At the end of the line, a band played honest songs to a parking lot full of people who ate barbecue with reverence while their children produced impressive plates of slime using Elmer’s glue, tempera paint and glitter from the craft table. At some point, late in the afternoon, we realized we were all hungry and tired from being so happy. So, we dispersed for dinner, walking back along the sidewalk where thick lines of sidewalk chalk scrawled rainbows and a sweet word: “Peace.” My parents raised me in this town. Even now, I’m sitting three doors down from the porch where we hung twinkle lights in the rain on my wedding day. A few weeks ago, my parents moved a plane flight’s distance away. Before they left, we met for coffee and we walked the trail together. “See, here’s where the kids from the school painted a mural…” “And, look, back in this alley, there’s some art here, too…” “Was that door always so blue?” It’s all different than we remember it. Clean brick. Lost trees. More people. More dogs. When we came to the part of the trail with the bucket of sidewalk chalk, my dad took a piece and wrote “T+J” and he drew a heart around the letters. I don’t know if their heart is still there. How long has it been? Has it rained? All I know is that lately I’ve been walking around with my eyes wide open, stopping to see and re-see everything, every brilliant gift that’s here now. Because next time I squinch my eyes closed tight and look as hard as I can, I want to see it all so clearly that I know it’ll never get lost. JULY 2018 | COBB LIFE
