HOW TO FIND THE

Best Tutor

FOR YOUR CHILD

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

By Lachlan Malone

I

f your child is struggling with his studies, you need to seek the assistance of a tutor and help him manage his studies in an effective manner. However, looking for the best private tutor is not as easy to do as you might expect. That’s because you will need to pay attention towards a variety of factors to select the best tutor and move forward with the offered service. It is perfectly fine for you to take your own time when looking for a private tutor. That’s because getting the assistance of a good tutor is an excellent step that you can take to ensure the future of your child. Hence, you need to pay special attention towards the below mentioned facts and proceed with the service offered by the best home tutors. 1. Check Whether Your Tutor is Verified or Not The first step is to check whether the tutor that you are going to hire is verified or not. To do that, you need to get in touch with the tutor and ask for appropriate documents to prove the verification. If the tutor offers them to you promptly upon request, you will be able to proceed with peace of mind as you have discovered a verified tutor. In addition to the verification, you need to double check the credentials of the tutor as well. Moreover, you need to ask for recommendations. Then you will be able to make sure that you are about to provide the best possible experience to your child with the assistance of a qualified tutor. 2. Check The Tutor’s Experience Obviously, you need to start looking fora tutorwho has previous experience in teaching students. But, it is better if the tutor has experience in teaching the same subject to the students who are in the same age group as your child. That’s

because some things in tutoring cannot be learned from theoretical knowledge. Instead, the tutors learn them from the practical experiences that they go through. In other words, the tutors e n h a n c e their tutoring capabilities over time. Due to this reason, you need to make sure that you are getting the assistance of an experienced tutor who has been able to polish his skill set in the past. An experienced tutor can quickly determine the learning level of your child and the lessons will be adjusted accordingly to suit your little one. This delivers a more personalized and an efficient learning experience to the child. You will be able to make sure that your child is not going through any frustration when adjusting to the teaching methodology of the tutor. Instead, the tutor would adjust according to the needs of your child. 3. Check The Tutor’s Communication Skills The tutor that you hire to help your child should be equipped with excellent communication skills. In fact, the tutor should maintain regular communications along with your child throughout the lessons. On the other hand, the tutor should also be in a position to make the lessons interactive with the best use of his communication capabilities. Then your child will not have to worry about anything and you will be able to make sure that he gets the best possible knowledge required. In addition, your child will never be bored with the lessons that he is being provided with. The best home tutors

know how to keep the attention of the little ones throughout the lessons. This can provide an efficient learning experience to the kids. 4. Observe The Tutor’s Attitude You must also pay special attention towards the attitude and personality of a tutor when hiring one. That’s because you don’t want to provide a compromised education to your child at the end of the day. The tutor should be willing to provide the best possible learning experience to the little ones at all times. To do that, the tutor should have an attitude to work beyond the boundaries. In other words, the tutor wouldn’t think twice before going that extra mile to make sure that your kid has learned the lesson. 5. Check for Reviews Last but not least, you need to take your time checking the reviews on the tutor you are about to hire. When you are going through the reviews, you will be able to get a clear understanding about the experience that your child will be able to receive at the end of the day. Therefore, you can easily determine whether you are going to provide such an experience to your child or not. Now you have a clear understanding on how to search for the best tutor for your child. With that in mind, you will be able to start looking for a tutor. If you are looking for a good place to get started with your research, you can simply take a look at Smile Tutor. It is a reliable home tuition agency based in Singapore and can provide excellent assistance for you to locate the best tutor who can help your child with the struggles that he is going through.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN By Martin William

18

FEBRUARY 2019 mdmonthly.com

C

hoosing a primary care physician is the first step in managing your healthcare. Because your physician is your medical ‘home’, you can go to him or her for annual checkups, non-emergency illnesses, and wellness visits. If you choose a good doctor, your relationship can span decades. Here are some tips that will come in handy when choosing doctors like Riverside Medical Group doctors: ASK FOR REFERRALS If you are like most people, you will feel more comfortable with a physician who has been recommended by a friend or family member. You should consider asking the people closest to you for recommendations. If you have a close relationship with someone in the medical field, you could also ask him or her for a recommendation. Are you relocating? You should ask your current primary care physician to give you recommendations for your new area of residence. LOOK FOR ‘IN-NETWORK’ DOCTORS Most health plans negotiate discounted and special rates with some hospitals and doctors in your area of residence. When you opt for such ‘in-network’ doctors, you will pay less money from your own pocket. This means that you will not pay much money from your own pocket. However, if you want to get cosmetic procedures such as liposuction in Henderson NV, you will have to pay from your own pocket because most health plans do not cover this.

THINK ABOUT LOGISTICS If you want a doctor who is close to your home, you should search for doctors whose offices are near you. You also need to consider the office hours when choosing a physician. Will you have to take some time off work to visit the doctor? You should choose a doctor with convenient office hours for you. Language is also an important factor to consider. You should be able to talk to your doctor comfortably in a language that he or she understands. Nowadays, most doctors communicate with their patients online, making it easier for you to keep in touch with your physician. FIND THE DOCTOR WITH THE RIGHT EXPERTISE As soon as you obtain a list of in-network doctors for your plan, you should start narrowing it down. Several types of doctors identify as primary care physicians, including general practice, family practice, and internal medicine doctors. Moreover, pediatricians serve as the primary care physicians for your kids. Internal Medicine – this doctor usually focuses on treating adults and specializes in managing chronic conditions as well as preventing and diagnosing diseases and chronic illnesses.

Family Practice – these doctors can treat all kinds of patients from newborns to elderly people. They treat general conditions, but can also treat specialized conditions that you would visit a specialist for such as sports injuries. General Practice – like family practice physicians, these doctors can treat people of any age and gender. You can also find osteopaths in this category of doctors. Osteopaths are doctors who specialize in alternative medicine for the musculoskeletal system. VISIT THE DOCTOR A face-to-face meeting or an office visit will allow you to choose the right doctor for your needs. When visiting the office, you need to feel comfortable with the nurses and physician. Because you should be able to trust and rely on your physician, feeling comfortable around him or her is imperative. What is the demeanor of the people in the office like? Are they rude and short with patients or are they kind? CONCLUSION The above tips will help you to choose the best physician for your needs. Just make sure that you conduct background checks before you settle for a physician; online reviews will tell you a lot about the doctor you are considering.

REHABILITATION AND ALZHEIMER’S

Disease

INFORMED PATIENT

By Dr. Michael Fuentes

A

lzheimer’s is a progressive disease that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. It’s the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

The majority of Alzheimer’s patients are 65 years of age or older, but it doesn’t just affect older adults. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, nearly 200,000 people in the United States who are under the age of 65 also have early-onset Alzheimer’s. Symptoms usually develop slowly and become more severe over time. The most common early symptom of the disease involves difficulty in remembering newly learned information. As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms may occur. These symptoms include disorientation, confusion about information, mood changes, behavior changes, unfound suspicions about known individuals, and even difficulty in walking, speaking, or swallowing. While there’s currently no known cure for Alzheimer’s, treatments for symptoms are available. At Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, our specially-

trained, interdisciplinary team works with Alzheimer’s patients and their families to help them maintain their abilities and independence for as long as possible. This in turn can help to decrease caregiver stress. Depending upon the stage of the disease, we create individualized treatment plans with patients and family members which can include: Physical Therapy – Focuses on improving balance, muscle strength and mobility, and fall prevention Speech-Language Pathology – Focuses on cognitive and communication skills, and swallowing difficulties Occupational Therapy Focuses on daily living activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, toileting Neuropsychology Counseling - Helps patients and family members adjust to emotional and physical changes Home Evaluations – Identifies necessary modifications to provide a safe home environment Family/Caregiver Education – Teaches caregivers about disease process and how to best help Community Resources – Provides patients and caregivers with educational resources, including respite care

Ways to Relieve Sinus Pain Provided by ENT Clinics of San Antonio

Clean Air

Air quality is of utmost importance for people with sinus problems. It is very easy for the air in your home to become filled with pollutants and allergy triggers. An air purifier is a worthwhile investment for someone who suffers from sinus issues. You should also make sure that your home is properly humidified. Air with very low humidity, particularly when the heat is running in your house during the winter months, can dry out your nasal passages and exacerbate sinus problems.

2

Allergy Management

Although you can’t cure your allergies, you can minimize the amount that they affect you. If you are unsure of what your specific allergy triggers are, you can visit an allergist to perform a needle stick test. Once you’ve identified your allergies, you must avoid your triggers at all costs. If you cannot avoid your allergy triggers, find an allergy medication that effectively minimizes your symptoms.

Stay Hydrated

A dehydrated body will lead to dehydrated sinuses. If you stay hydrated, your sinuses will be able to stay clear more easily, preventing pain and congestion. Be sure to periodically drink water throughout the day. Aim to drink a daily minimum of eight glasses.

4

Saline Rinse

If your sinus issues are related to dry nasal passages, a saline rinse might provide relief. Saline sprays are available at drugs stores and provide your nose with a blast of safe salt water. You can also rinse your nasal passages using a neti pot, which allows you to run a stream of salt water through your nostrils.

Moist Compresses

Placing a moistened towel on your head above your sinuses might provide relief. Many people find the best results by alternating temperatures. Use a warm compress over your sinuses for a few minutes, then swap it out for a cold one. If you repeat this process a few times, you might feel better.

Sinus issues can be very difficult to manage. If none of these techniques improve your condition, you should consult a doctor to see if your sinuses require serious intervention. For more information visit www.entclinicsofsa.com or call 210.249.4838

TELEMEDICINE AND TELEHEALTH:

THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE?

INFORMED PATIENT

ALAMO HEIGHTS PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS Telemedicine is the newest wave in medical care sponsored by distance technology. Telemedicine allows physicians and patients to connect even though they may be miles away. This new medical phenomenon has significant implications for providing health care to individuals in rural areas, on cruise ships, and astronauts while they are floating in space as well as patients at home, those in nursing homes, and patients attending school. Interactive video and aided computer technology can now allow a physician who is not in direct contact with the patient to diagnose and treat any illness. Currently, telemedicine is a way for local or staff physicians to communicate directly with a specialist without physically bringing the specialist to the patient or the patient to the specialist. As noted in the above situations, bridging what is often a great physical distance using this technology can allow the two physicians and the patient to work together to provide care. Telemedicine also allows for the exchange of medical records such as x-rays and other pertinent patient information. However, as with any new technology, the exchange of confidential patient information in an environment that may not be secure has brought a whole new set of problems and concerns to this emerging new healthcare system. In this era of identity theft that has been facilitated by a lack of appropriate security surrounding the electronic transfer of personal information, new technologies such as telemedicine, while promising exciting advances in the delivery of healthcare, offer new ways for unauthorized access to individual information. Certainly, this information has to be safeguarded as it may likely contain personal and financial information, but highly confidential health information as well. The effective safeguarding of this information is the current hot topic in telemedicine. Currently, state and federal governments have enacted rigorous legislation that requires the conscientious safeguarding of an individual’s financial, medical, and other personal information. Although there is no such thing as ensuring that all personal information is 100% secure, the electronic transmissions required for telemedicine are far from safe. Ideally, the access to these transmissions will be limited only to appropriate parties via an encoding similar to that used in “spy” technology. The ability to ensure that telehealth information is completely encrypted as it sails the world’s airwaves is certainly available, however, it is extremely expensive which would likely limit its availability as well as further complicate the relationship between telemedicine and insurance providers. However, limited access and information encryption appear to be the most direct way to ensure information confidentiality.

isc injuries are among the most common reasons for back surgery. Surviving back surgery is no small feat. You know you don’t want to suffer the pain of another injury, so learning to take care of your spine after surgery is essential. While it might seem like it happened overnight, your disc injury was probably years in the making. These tips may help to repair your issues and keep your back feeling great.

LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR. Surgery may have improved your symptoms so much that you want to jump back into your regular activities. You might feel better, but your back needs time to heal. Your surgeon gave you a set of rules to follow and it is important to stick with them for the full 6 – 8 weeks (or sometimes longer) healing time. Discectomy surgery scrapes away the damaged inner part of the disc that is causing pain. A disc herniation creates a tunnel which can allow more of the gel-like inside to squeeze out under pressure. The outer portion of the disk needs time to grow cartilage to avoid another herniation. During that time, it is important not to lift, twist, or force flexibility by bending.

Sitting in one place for a long period of time is never ideal, but if your job requires it you might need to rethink your idea of sitting comfort. Ergonomic knee chairs force you to properly adjust your posture. They might seem uncomfortable at first, but you will likely adjust quickly. Ergonomic chairs naturally align your pelvis and hips. After a few weeks, you probably won’t want to give your new chair up.

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE. Your abdominal muscles are critical for back health. If your stomach muscles don’t do their job, your back is forced to pick up the slack. Exercises like situps that stress your back or neck are not recommended. However, stability exercises can build your core without harming your back. Planks and side planks are both a good choice for keeping your back straight and increasing strength. Stability exercises are designed to build up over time, so don’t overdo it in the beginning. Some types of yoga can also gently improve core strength.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

FEBRUARY 2019 mdmonthly.com

2019 is almost here, and it’s time to share our favorite mouth healthy habits that will help your family achieve oral health in the new year!

1

ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN A PROPER ORAL HEALTH ROUTINE

Food debris left on your child’s teeth encourages bacteria growth that eats away at enamel and causes cavities. This is why it’s important to have a steady, consistent oral health routine. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends children brush twice per day, for two minutes at a time, and floss once per day to clean debris from the hard-to-reach areas of their teeth. A proper oral health routine is the best way to keep a mouth clean, and prevents a lot of oral health ailments.

2 DRINK MORE WATER – SERIOUSLY

Water is a fantastic tool in the fight against bad bacteria and tooth decay. Water is not acidic, and does not harm teeth at all. In fact, it improves saliva production, which naturally cleans teeth of debris and restores the mouth back to a healthy ph balance. Try giving your child more water instead of sugary drinks to help keep their teeth strong and healthy. If they must have juice or a sweeter drink, water it down so that they aren’t consuming too much sugar at one time.

3 EAT A MOUTH-HEALTHY DIET

A healthy diet is critical to getting a healthy mouth. Mouth-healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, nuts and calcium-rich items can all strengthen teeth. When buying

For more information visit: www.paulkennedydds.com

fruit and vegetables, make sure that you purchase them in their full-forms, and that you don’t buy fruit packaged in sugary syrup. Try adding fibrous vegetables like celery, and spinach or carrots to your child’s diet, since fibrous food naturally scrubs teeth clean of food debris, and combats bad bacteria buildup.

4 REPLACE WORN OUT TOOTHBRUSHES

It can be difficult to know when to replace your child’s old toothbrush with a new one. But, there are some signs that indicate it’s time for a change. If your child’s toothbrush bristles are frayed, or spreading outward, then it’s time for a new toothbrush. If your child recently had an illness, then it’s best to replace their toothbrush to prevent the spread of unhealthy bacteria. Finally, a good rule of thumb to follow is to replace your child’s toothbrush after three months of use.

5 STAY MOUTH HEALTHY NEXT YEAR

One of the best ways to keep your children’s oral health in order is by scheduling an appointment with our office every six months for a routine oral checkup and cleaning. The holidays are the perfect time for an appointment since most children have an extended break from school.

This may result in you hitting the gym, watching what you eat and more, all in the name of looking good for your new romantic interest. Of course this is the case for new couples who see each other in person, and meet regularly, but this can also be the case with long-distance relationships as well. Even in a long distance relationship, you can still expect to feel that same thrill of new love, and be motivated to get to know each other better, both mentally and physically. BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP CAN REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY Feelings of loneliness and worry about the future is one of the top causes of stress and anxiety in adults today. Relationships can help ease this type of stress significantly. First of all, being in a relationship creates feelings of happiness and comfort. And secondly, social support has also been shown to reduce the biological stress response. Also according to Psychology Today, in studies in which people were subjected to social stress in public, those who “had a close friend or family member present showed less cardiovascular arousal” and a generally faster recovery from stress. Being in a relationship can reduce stress and anxiety, and help you feel less alone, more supported, and more energized about your life. Furthermore, supportive, healthy relationships can also help protect you from larger mental health issues such as depression. When it comes to relationships, whether they are romantic, familial or between friends, one thing is the same; it’s quality over quantity that really matters. Surround yourself with people who love and care about you, and your health will reap the benefits.

hat is the question on the minds of many politicians, citizens, and patients. My answer is yes to cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, as well as to THC. The time for medical marijuana to move forward in Texas has come. CBD is a chemical constituent of the hemp plant, also known as cannabis or marijuana. The plant is one of the most practical known and can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, insulation, biofuel, food, animal feed, and medicinals. The history of how the hemp plant came to be demonized in American culture is a sordid tale of greed, racism and propaganda, all used to protect the financial interests of some of the wealthiest men in American history. It rewrote the true story of the incredibly versatile and beneficial plant that had the potential to be an economic and health boon to this country. The current body of research on cannabidiol, the nonpsychoactive component of the hemp plant, shows so much promise and potential benefit for so many health conditions. Anyone who has any knowledge of the effects it has in our bodies would have to support expanded legalization of cannabis. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant is more controversial, though no less promising for a variety of health conditions. Did you know that inside of us we have a system known as the endocannabinoid system, that serves as a master regulator of nerve and immune system function? Our own bodies produce two substances that are structurally similar to CBD called anandamide, and arachidonoylglycerol which act on the same receptors that CBD does.

44

FEBRUARY 2019 mdmonthly.com

These compounds exert effects on mood, memory, pain relief, as well as pleasure and reproduction. Other effects are likely, though not yet elucidated. There are endocannabinoid receptors throughout our brains that modulate conditions including seizures, anxiety, pain, ADD & ADHD. In other parts of our bodies, those receptors on cells, act to modulate our immune systems and show promise in the treatment of autoimmune disorders including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and even Alzheimer’s disease. The research is ongoing, as much as possible, given the plant’s current DEA classification as a schedule 1 drug. A schedule 1 drug is categorized as a substance that has no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. The safety of CBD is unquestionable. The list of conditions and symptoms that it shows promise in treating include pain, nausea, insomnia, asthma, migraines, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, glaucoma, inflammation, and even type 1 diabetes. This list is the tip of the iceberg, but I wanted to name some of the more common medical problems that CBD has been effectively used for with positive results. In March of 2019, the legislature will have an opportunity to decide whether Texas moves forward in helping her citizens’ health, and her economy. We can no longer feign ignorance or cling to lies. It is time for medical marijuana to be legalized in Texas.

CREATING A CHARITABLE LEGACY: HOW LIFE INSURANCE CAN HELP YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS DO MORE Provided By: Eric Kala CPWA®, CIMA®, CFP®, AEP®, CLU®, ChFC®, CRPS® Wealth Management & Business Planning Advisor Avid Wealth Partners 17802 W Interstate 10, Ste. 114, San Antonio, TX 78257 210.446.5755 www.AvidWealthPartners.com

hen most of us purchase life insurance, we’re thinking about one thing: making sure our loved ones are taken care of after we’re gone. But life insurance can also provide a way to create a lasting impact on a charity or cause that has special meaning for you. That’s because life insurance allows you to make a much larger gift to charity than you might otherwise be able to give. At the same time, it can also provide certain tax benefits.

MAKING EVERY DOLLAR COUNT To understand how life insurance can boost your charitable efforts, consider this hypothetical example. Imagine Ellen contributes $5,000 each year to an organization that creates educational opportunities for young girls in developing countries. Her donations are earmarked to buy textbooks. If Ellen donates this amount over the next 20 years, her total charitable gift would total $100,000.

NAMING A CHARITY AS A BENEFICIARY The simplest way to use life insurance as a tool for charitable giving is to name a favorite charity as a beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy on your life. This approach enables you to retain control over the policy, which means you can change your beneficiary at any time and access any cash value. Naming a charity as your policy’s beneficiary will not provide a federal income tax charitable deduction. However, your estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction for the amount of the benefit the charity receives upon your death. Maintaining ownership of your policy provides another important benefit: the ability to transfer your policy’s ownership to the charity of your choice in the future, when you may no longer require the life insurance for your own needs. At that time, you may be able to take an income tax charitable deduction.

What if Ellen wanted to do more for this charity? She learns that it would take a pledge of $500,000 to build a library, which is more than Ellen can afford to give right now. Fortunately, there’s a solution that would enable Ellen to meet her giving goal without having to come up with a lot of cash up front. Ellen could use her annual contributions to pay the premiums on a life insurance policy with a $500,000 death benefit and PURCHASE A NEW OR name the charity as beneficiary of the policy. DONATE AN EXISTING POLICY In doing so, Ellen would be able to leverage her annual contributions, thus creating what could potentially become a A second option would be to either much larger legacy over time. purchase a new policy or donate an

existing one to a favorite charity and name that organization as the beneficiary and “owner.” To do this, you must assign all rights in the policy to the charity, which means you give up all control of the policy forever. In exchange, you may be able to take an income tax charitable deduction. The policy would not be included in your gross estate, unless you die within three years of the transfer. Then, your estate would be eligible for an offsetting estate tax charitable deduction. When you transfer an existing life insurance policy to charity, that organization has the option to take advantage of any accumulated cash value to meet current funding requirements, preserve the full death benefit to meet future needs or a combination of the two.

USING A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY WITH A CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST (CRT) A third choice is to use a life insurance policy in conjunction with a charitable remainder trust (CRT). A CRT lets you convert a highly appreciated asset, like stock or real estate, and use it to create a lifetime stream of income to meet your current needs. Upon your death, the remaining trust assets go to the

charity you chose. With the income from the CRT, you could then purchase a life insurance policy on your life, usually inside an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT), and name one or more heirs as the policy beneficiaries. At your death, the proceeds from your ILIT would pass income tax free to your loved ones, thereby “replacing” the assets that went to the charity.

THE BENEFIT OF A PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE These are just some of the options that make life insurance a powerful financial tool for leveraging your donations and accomplishing your charitable goals. By either gifting a policy outright or naming a charity as beneficiary, you can provide the organizations and/or causes that matter most to you with a lasting legacy while keeping the inheritance of your loved ones intact. Financial security is the confidence that comes from taking action today to provide for tomorrow. It’s an ongoing process during which you should be disciplined but flexible to adapt to changes over time. Working with a qualified financial professional can help as you make sound decisions about your life insurance.

ast summer, Walden, an Austin-based, boardcertified plastic surgeon, opened her third medical spa. This one is in the heart of Midtown Manhattan (157 East 57th Street) where she offers clients a host of nonsurgical, cosmetic procedures such as body sculpting, skin treatments, injectables, sexual wellness therapy and IV hydration.

“This summer I had a wonderful opportunity fall in my lap with the acquisition of a fully-functioning medical spa in Manhattan and couldn’t resist,” Walden said. “New York City— where I trained as an aesthetic plastic surgeon, established my first cosmetic surgery practice and gave birth to my twin “As the field has evolved with minimally invasive treatments, I sons, always has a special place in my heart.” have kept up with it since oftentimes patients don’t have the downtime or want to undergo the knife,” Walden said. “I enjoy what I do and find it rewarding to help change a person’s external appearance, so it matches how good and youthful they feel about themselves on the inside.” With the success of her two medical spas in Austin—The MedSpa at Walden Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in After graduating with honors from The University of Texas at Westlake adjacent to her surgical practice and The MedSpa Austin and then as the salutatorian at The University of Texas at Northwest Hills just blocks away from the home she was Medical Branch, Walden established a successful cosmetic raised in, Walden was excited about the expansion and what surgery practice in New York City after her fellowship in she could deliver to patients in the Northeast. Specifically, she cosmetic surgery at the renowned Manhattan Eye, Ear and saw an opportunity to expand some of the “newer cosmetic

and sexual wellness services” she provides at her Austin location. Her new spa, Skintology by Dr. Jennifer Walden / The MedSpa Manhattan, offers several intimate wellness procedures on female and male patients. This includes bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for patients who are affected by various states of hormonal changes as they age. Skintology MedSpa also has Votiva by InMode Aesthetics, which is a radiofrequency-based noninvasive internal vaginal tightening and external treatment to rejuvenate the external appearance of the female genitalia. The P-Shot (Priapus Shot) and The O-Shot for improvement in sexual performance are procedures that are also offered at her New York MedSpa. The P-Shot is especially helpful for men who are experiencing ED, especially when combined with other noninvasive therapeutics. The O-Shot can provide relief for women who suffer from medical symptoms regarding loss of vaginal elasticity and mild to moderate

urinary incontinence. Other platelet-rich plasma (PRP) based procedures offered at the medspa include The Vampire Facial (PRP combined with microneedling), and Vampire Facelift (Juvederm and PRP injections to help lift and restore volume in the aging face). Walden’s MedSpa in Manhattan is also the first in New York to offer The Big D Wave, a noninvasive treatment for male erectile dysfunction that uses acoustic soundwaves to painlessly treat the condition. The Big D Wave, Walden said, is becoming quite a popular procedures at her practice in both Austin and New York. “We love our male patients,” Walden said. “Men also are seeking cosmetic treatments without the stigma or taboo these days, and that is a positive since it can help with their appearance, sexual health, and self-esteem.” Along with the popularity of The Big D Wave, Walden said the most sought-after nonsurgical procedures are the NuEra Tight, which reduces the appearance of cellulite by using radiofrequency energy to tighten the skin; Ultherapy, SculpSure, and CoolSculpting, which reduces fat by using cryotherapy to “freeze” fat cells; and Botox and soft-tissue fillers like Restylane Lyft or Vollure, which are “always uniformly popular no matter where you are—Texas or New York.” Dr. Walden is proud to announce the arrival of her new local medical director, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. William Lao, who also trained as cosmetic surgery fellow at The Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. Dr. Lao is very familiar with the beauty, skincare, and the medical spa industry after practicing three years in his home of Taipei after his graduation from fellowship, and doing hundreds of cosmetic procedures there. Starting in January, Dr. Lao will be performing threadlifts, Asian upper eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), liquid nose jobs (nasal contouring with fillers), bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and fat transfer to the face as well as other local anesthesia procedures at Skintology. Dr. Lao will also provide oversight and assist with the daily operations of the medical spa with Dr. Walden to ensure quality and safety.

A DOCTOR FROM THE START Walden knew she wanted to be a doctor at a very early age. Her father was a dentist and her mother was a nurse, so going into the medical field seemed like it might be something natural for her to be interested in. “I looked up to my parents,” she said. “I think they inspired in me a desire to go into patient care—using your hands and brain simultaneously all day.” While dissecting animals in science class wasn’t very appealing to her fellow classmates in junior high, Walden was right there

with scalpel in hand ready to make the first incision. “My girlfriends in my class were disgusted by the project and my dissection partner ran away, but I was fascinated,” she said. “My science teacher told me I would be a surgeon after she witnessed my dissections. I believe my interest in surgery started all those years ago.”

MEDSPA MAGIC In Austin, Dr. Jennifer Walden enjoys operating in her accredited office-based surgicenter and finds it to be her comfort zone. She has also discovered a passion for nonsurgical procedures. With two medical spas in Austin to help both men and women look and feel better, returning to New York City has been a natural transition for her. “What works in Texas for my demographic at home may not necessarily work for New Yorkers,” Walden states, “but that is what is fascinating to me about this business—finding the secret sauce in each geographic location down to hyperlocal - zip code by zip codefor prospective patients who want medspa services.” She continues, “ I enjoy using the other side of my brain- the creative, nonscientific side to figure out how best to communicate and serve patients no matter where they are from. We live in such a global world with instant mass communication methods such as social media, so I enjoy studying different cultures and populations so that I can understand what they want and need in the aesthetic healthcare realm and how I may be able to make that more accessible to them”. “It’s a puzzle I work on daily, and since I know both markets, I find it fulfilling to see things working both in New York and Austin. People are people no matter where on the earth you are located; we all want to look our best; it’s a basic human desire.” Walden continues, “I enjoy finding the best staff members who can provide these services effectively and safely with great customer service. Once I put together my dream team which is of critical importance for medspa success, I then go for the best device technology, skin care lines, injectables, and procedures for that particular business.” Walden adds, “It’s a passion project”. Now, women and men on the East Coast will have the opportunity to make an appointment at Skintology MedSpa by Dr. Jennifer Walden and choose from a number of nonsurgical procedures they provide, including Sculptra nonsurgical buttock lift, noninvasive fat reduction, nonsurgical facelift, facial threadlift, eyelid lift, nonsurgical breast/ decellote lift, microneedling, Hydrafacial, cellulite reduction, laser hair removal, permanent makeup, noninvasive ED treatment, and vaginal rejuvenation, which uses radiofrequency energy to treat everything from low blood flow and sensitivity to improving the appearance of the labia and vulva.

treatments,” Dr. Walden says, “and am often asked to speak with other doctors about this area of our specialty.” To stay on the forefront of noninvasive vaginal rejuvenation and other procedures, Walden stays ahead of the game by attending and speaking at industry conferences around the world, which allows her to learn from the best and brightest physicians in the field. She also participates in IRB-approved studies through her center on some of these treatment modalities in the women’s sexual health and wellness arena. “I also read as much as possible, and I listen to my patients,” she said. “I like to stay on the cutting edge of the latest studies and trends.” It’s one of the reasons Walden decided to expand into New York City in the first place.

“I try to stay on the forefront of noninvasive aesthetic “The year-over-year trend is towards non- and minimally

DERMAL FILLERS:

The Need To Knows WOMEN’S HEALTH

Provided By LCS Medical Spa, Dr. Melanie Carreon

What Are The ‘Need To Knows’ About Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers are created for different purposes, and some are thicker than others. Different brands and thicknesses have different functions. It is important that you choose a clinic that has a full understanding of dermal fillers and their brands, thickness and function. Our clinic is AAAHC Accredited for safety and efficacy reasons, combined with Dr. Melanie Carreon’s experience of over 12 years as a Dermal Filler Injector. For example, dermal fillers are often used to plump and add volume to the lips or to reduce the appearance of fine lines around the lips. This area is delicate and the skin is quite thin. Using a thick dermal filler would not result in natural, flattering results. For this reason, using a thin dermal filler such as Restylane Silk is a good choice. Other popular uses for dermal fillers are adding volume to cheeks or other contouring effects. This type of treatment requires a thicker filler. Products such as Radiesse or Juvederm Voluma are ideal in this situation.

D

o you need to know more before getting dermal fillers? There are countless types of dermal fillers, and multiple ways in which they can be used.

While dermal fillers are minimally invasive and quite safe, committing to the procedure is still a big decision, so it’s a good idea to have as much information as possible.

The last several years have seen significant refinements in already remarkable formulations. Popular brands including Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse continue to fine-tune their offerings and have revolutionized the cosmetic procedure industry, giving women and men a powerful tool to help create amazing, natural and consistent results. If you are seeking a minimally invasive, safe cosmetic antiaging procedure, dermal fillers are worth looking in to.
