TIPS FOR AVOIDING DISCOMFORT AFTER GALLBLADDER REMOVAL

our gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located just under your liver in the upper-right section of your abdomen. Its job is to store bile, a fluid that your liver manufacturers for the digestion of fat. Some people develop problems with their gallbladder. It may become inflamed and painful. Or it may produce hard deposits called gallstones. These conditions can block bile within your gallbladder. When your gallbladder becomes blocked and inflamed, it may require removal. Surgery to take out your gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy. Gallbladder removal is one of the most common types of surgery. Fortunately, you can live a healthy life even without a gallbladder. If you need gallbladder surgery, you can count on Dr. Maria Palafox, a general surgeon in San Antonio, Texas. She has extensive experience performing gallbladder removal surgery. Here, Dr. Palafox shares five tips for avoiding discomfort after gallbladder removal.

1 3 4 TAKE SOME TIME OFF

Although gallbladder surgery is a relatively straightforward, low-risk procedure, you want to make sure you give yourself enough time to recuperate afterward. Allow a week or two of recuperation time before returning to your normal, everyday activities. Keep in mind that your energy may not return fully for up to six weeks.

2 EAT A BLAND DIET

Your digestive system benefits from a rest after surgery. To give it a break, choose foods that are easy to digest, such as clear broth and gelatin, soon after surgery. Gradually add in soft solid foods for a few days, along with low-fiber foods such as white rice, white bread, and cooked vegetables. Avoid raw produce, which can be more difficult to digest. Rather than eating large meals, choose smaller, more frequent meals and snacks that are easier to digest. Eating smaller meals also helps prevent gas and other symptoms that can occur during the first few weeks after gallbladder removal.

AVOID FATTY FOODS

After your gallbladder removal, bile goes directly from your liver into your digestive system. For the first few weeks, this shift may interfere with your body’s ability to digest fats, which can result in bloating, loose stools, and gas. These symptoms usually improve, but until they do, cutting back on dietary fat can reduce your discomfort. Avoid fatty foods such as: Fried foods Baked goods Fatty meats Processed meats such as sausage and bacon Full-fat cheese and butter Creamy sauces and soups Full-fat salad dressings Ice cream Heavy cream If you usually drink whole milk, try nonfat milk instead.

ADD FIBER BACK INTO YOUR DIET GRADUALLY

High-fiber foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans are great for your overall health. But during the first few weeks after gallbladder surgery, you should avoid them because they can increase the bloating and gas that sometimes occur after gallbladder removal.

5

AVOID SPICY FOODS

Don’t worry; you can eat foods like salsa, hot sauce, and your favorite spicy dishes in the future. But during the first few weeks after having your gallbladder removed, you may feel more comfortable if you avoid spices.

If you require gallbladder removal or other types of surgery, Dr. Palafox can help. Call her San Antonio office for an appointment. 210982-0293

GENDER PUTS WOMEN MORE AT RISK WOMEN’S HEALTH By

FOR STROKE It was more than six years ago when Laura Trammell took the day off from work in the human resources department at Corpus Christi City Hall for her son’s birthday. It was a day that changed her life. After returning home from delivering cupcakes to her son’s school, she had an event that left her unable to speak or walk. Trammell suffered a brain aneurysm and a stroke. 14

I

n the battle of the sexes, here’s one that women – often unknowingly – take the lead in: About 55,000 more women than men have strokes every year. Strokes kill more women than men annually, making it the #3 leading cause of death in women.

“To say I was surprised about having a stroke is an understatement,” Trammell says. “I always thought a man would be more likely to have stroke than me. I found out the hard way that’s not true.” This gender misconception about strokes is common, according to Dr. Michael Fuentes, Medical Director of

Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital. “Most people don’t realize that women suffer strokes more frequently than men,” he says. “If you’re a woman, you share a lot of the same risk factors for strokes as a man, but a woman’s risk also is influenced by hormones, reproductive health, pregnancy, child-birth and other gender-related factors.” For example, birth control pills may double the risk of stroke, especially in women with high blood pressure or who smoke. And, according to the American Heart Association, hormone replacement therapy – once thought to reduce stroke risk – in fact, actually increases it.

A recent study shared through the National Stroke Association listed these factors that have been found to increase stroke risk in women: Menstruation before the age of 10 Menopause before age 45 Low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) Taking oral estrogen or combined oral contraceptives

The study also showed a history of pregnancy complications can also indicate higher stroke risk. These problems include gestational diabetes and high blood pressure during or immediately after pregnancy. “Add this to other general risk factors for stroke like family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, and being overweight –and it becomes clearer as to why women can be more at risk for stroke than men,” Fuentes says. Trammell was treated at a local hospital for initial care before being transferred to Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital. She spent more than two months receiving rehabilitation to help her recover, which included daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

“Everyone there was just so wonderful,” she says. “I went into the rehabilitation hospital not able to talk or walk, and I’m able to do those things now. My words are hard to come by, but I can speak clearly. My hand and foot on the right side of my body don’t work well, but my arms and legs move. I’m so grateful that I’ve recovered this far.” “Whatever stage of life a woman is in, it’s important that she be aware of all the risk factors of stroke,” Fuentes says. “As it’s often said, ‘knowledge is power.’ And in this case, the more knowledgeable a woman is about her stroke risk factors, the more she’ll be able to understand how she can be affected and work with her physician or healthcare provider as appropriate to reduce them.”

Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital provides specialized physical rehabilitation services to patients recovering from or living with disabilities caused by injuries, illnesses, or chronic medical conditions. The hospital is ranked among the Top 10% in the nation, and its Stroke Rehabilitation program has been certified by The Joint Commission. WHAT IS REVISION SPINE SURGERY?

INFORMED PATIENT By Dr. Steven Cyr

Failed Back or Spinal Surgery? We fix what other doctors won’t. Spinal surgery is complex because the human spine is complex. Our backbone provides our entire body with support. When surgeries do not go as planned, this can cause further complications. Understanding your options if you have continued pain can help you determine if you should have a revision spine surgery.

18

mdmonthly.com

What is Revision Spine Surgery? Everyone hopes that spine surgery is the end of the line when it comes to treating their back pain, and while it works for the vast majority of individuals, some surgeries fail to eradicate pain. Some patients may require a revision spine surgery. These surgeries are more complicated than standard surgery and requires a surgeon with specific expertise in revising failed surgeries. At SASpine, we seek to provide patients with relief anytime they undergo treatment. When patients experience continued pain after a previous spinal surgery, Dr Cyr’s background and experience with successfully revising failed surgeries make him ideally suited to increase a patient’s chance of finding relief.

How do I Know if I Need Revision Spine Surgery? Although every patient’s scenario is unique, often with a failure of fusion, also known as Pseudoarthrosis, the patient usually has some pain relief initially, then the pain returns and may be relentless. When you have symptoms that do not go away after surgery, you should have an evaluation to identify the source. This can determine the cause of your symptoms and provide treatment options. Depending on the cause, you might not need to have revision spine surgery. However, if you do need revision surgery, you should have the surgery performed by a surgeon familiar with revision surgery.

Common Reasons a Person Would Need Revision Spine Surgery: Future Disc Herniation If you underwent a discectomy to treat a herniated disc, the surgeon went in and removed damaged bits of the disc that were pinching the nerve(s). This usually helps alleviate nerve compression and pain, but it won’t necessarily prevent you from re-herniating the same disc in the future. Once damaged, a disc may progressively wear or even herniate again. Your doctor will walk you through physical therapy exercises and a treatment plan to reduce the risk of reherniation, but that doesn’t mean you’re fully safe from another herniation. The risk of a recurrent herniation ranges between 5% and 25%.

Adjacent Segment Disease Adjacent Segment Disease (ASD) is a problem that sometimes develops after a spinal fusion. When your discs are fused together, you lose mobility in that area. But, if you’re still actively moving your spine, that stress is

going to be dispersed somewhere else on your vertebral column. Oftentimes, the spinal joints above and below the fusion site see an increase in the amount of stress they bear. In patients affected by ASD, the condition doesn’t usually set in for a couple of years after the first surgery. It can lead to spine pain and joint degeneration, and a secondary corrective procedure may be necessary down the road.

Hardware Problems Another common reason someone may need to undergo a second operation is because there is an issue with the implanted hardware. Surgeons do everything in their power to confirm that implanted hardware or bone grafts are in a precise location prior to closing the incision site and ending the surgery, but sometimes the hardware can shift because the patient becomes too active too quickly, or as a result of inadequate bony fusion. If the bones fail to connect, the hardware (screws and rods) continues to absorb strain and eventually fails. Metallic implants can move within the bone, break, or pull out of position, causing extreme pain.

Tumor Returns One final reason you may need to return for a second surgery is because a spinal tumor returned after it was surgically removed. Other times, a doctor may only be able to safely remove part of a tumor, and although they will try to stop the growth of the remaining section using methods like radiation or chemotherapy, there’s a chance the tumor will continue to grow and need to be surgically addressed.

How is Revision Spine Surgery Managed or Treated? Treatment is based on a patient’s symptoms and the pathology that is going on. Not all patients are the same, and not all revision spine surgery is the same. As long as there is no neurological damage, conservative management can be attempted first. This includes physical therapy, injections and anti-inflammatory medications. When pain becomes relentless or if neurological changes occur, surgery may be offered. If you are experiencing continued pain and discomfort from a spinal surgery and want to determine if revision surgery is the right treatment for your condition, please call us in San Antonio at 210-487-7463 or in Houston at 832 919-7990, or visit us on the web at www.saspine.com.

SIX TIPS ON HOW TO GET THE BEST RESULTS WITH DERMAL LIP FILLER INFORMED PATIENT By Dr. Shah and Maira Shah

22

mdmonthly.com

M

any women no longer want thin lips. Fluffy, pillowy lips are everywhere you look these days. These pouty lips are the result of a widely available treatment that injects dermal lip fillers into the skin, in and around the lips. However, if you want the before-and-after to be noticeable and pleasing, you need to know what to expect, and what to ask for.

1

THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH FILLER TO GET.

All commonly used dermal lip fillers are based on hyaluronic acid and come with names like Juvederm and Restylane. With each syringe having the potential to be pricey, you need to decide how much you want to spend before you go in. The puffy/pouty look that is popular today, can take injections with up to four syringes! Note: A treatment with a single syringe offers a subtle, more natural effect.

2 3

SKIP THE PHOTOS.

Doctors usually prefer for you to explain to them the kind of look that you want, rather than bringing a picture of a celebrity whose lips you like. Doctors will use different brands of dermal fillers depending on your anatomy and the kind of look that you communicate to them.

BE READY TO SPECIFY WHAT YOU WANT.

When you let the doctor decide how to treat you, they will usually choose to apply your filler not just to your lips but to the area around the lips as well. Doctors will often treat your laugh lines and sagging corners. If you want a noticeable effect with a single syringe, you’ll need to ask the doctor to skip the areas around the mouth and to concentrate on the area inside the lipstick lines.

4

TAKE PICTURES OF YOURSELF SOON AFTER YOU GET TREATED.

Dermal lip filler does not last forever. Depending on the brand of filler that you use, each application can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. Sadly, your new lips won’t stay the way they look in the beginning. If you like the way your lips turn out, make sure to take plenty of pictures of yourself to ensure that the next time you go in, you can show the doctor exactly what you want.

5 6

ASK TO HAVE YOUR PARTIAL SYRINGES SAVED.

Most doctors allow you to have them save your partially used syringe. You can then go back in a couple of weeks, and have your lips adjusted or tweaked!

DON’T FREAK OUT. IT’S EASY TO UNDO LIP FILLER TREATMENT!

It’s important to remember that if you do get dermal lip filler, but are unhappy with the results, it’s easy to undo. Doctors can quickly use hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler so that you can start over. Learning how to get the right results with dermal lip fillers can take a little practice. When you get it done a couple of times, you will begin to learn what to ask for, and how to get it.

f you’re looking for a minimally invasive, easy way to melt away and reduce stubborn fat, a SmartLipo procedure may be the perfect solution for you. The SmartLipo technique involves very tiny incisions and uses laser technology to melt fat away once and for all. Dr. Melanie Carreonwith LCS Medical Spa in Seguin, Texas has used this method on countless men and women throughout Seguin, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston and they have been thrilled with their results. One of the many perks of SmartLipo is that this technique uses a tiny cannula which can target various areas of the body with precision–including delicate, hard to treat areas such as the chin. So let’s learn what body parts you can attack with SmartLipo!

What is SmartLipo? SmartLipo is an FDA approved, fat reducing procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. A surgeon makes a small incision under the skin and then slowly and precisely inserts the SmartLipo laser to melt away the fat. Once this process has been completed the surgeon then uses a cannula to remove the fat cells. Because the incisions made for the SmartLipo laser are so tiny, sutures may not be needed on certain areas. Once the stubborn fat has been removed the area is left looking more sculpted and toned. Even better, the heat generated from the laser stimulates the production of collagen under the skin to help with skin tightening, which means you could continue to see improved results for months to come.

What are the benefits of a SmartLipo procedure? SmartLipo is an excellent alternative to traditional liposuction for multiple reasons. The procedure produces minimal bruising and swelling, the recovery time is much quicker, and due to the smaller size of the incision, the scarring may be hardly noticeable. SmartLipo only requires local anesthesia so you can be awake and can lessen discomfort during the procedure. SmartLipo uses a laser to treat the fat and this laser also helps to stimulate collagen production. This means you’re not only removing fat from your problem areas, but the collagen production works to help tighten the existing tissue.

What are some areas that are commonly treated with SmartLipo? Back or bra area The back is one of the more common areas that can store fat. Back fat or bra rolls are incredibly stubborn and can be very difficult to get rid of on your own. SmartLipo can target these areas and may help slim and smooth the surface, leaving the back looking more even and slimmer. Flanks or love handles It can be incredibly difficult to get rid of stubborn fat in the flanks or love handles. This fat gives the unsightly appearance of a “muffin top” and can give the illusion that you’re carrying a lot of excess weight. SmartLipo will remove the fat from these areas and provide a more sculpted appearance. Abdomen The abdomen is another area that accumulates stubborn fat that just won’t budge. Age, genetics, post-pregnancy fat, and hormones all play a role in why some individuals have (and keep) that stubborn pooch. SmartLipo is an ideal solution for this area as it can eliminate the pooch and may leave your abdomen looking more smooth, flat, and toned.

28

mdmonthly.com

Upper arms The upper arms tend to develop stubborn pockets of fat over time. This, unfortunately, is a common occurrence in women due to aging and hormones. A SmartLipo procedure can help to reduce these fat deposits and create a slimmer, tighter look in the upper arm area. Chin While there isn’t any exercise that can reduce excess fat in the chin, a SmartLipo procedure may be able to help restore your jawline and tighten the skin. The SmartLipo technique is great for these delicate area and our Seguin, San Antonio, Austin and Houston patients love their results. Thighs and knees These areas will require strategic incisions to be made in order to ensure the end result is proportionate and symmetrical. The inner thighs may require incisions near the groin and buttocks crease, while the outer thighs may need incisions near the hip bone or outer thighs. Depending on the location of the fat on the knees, the incisions may need to be placed on the inside and/or outside of the knees in order to leave them slimmer and more defined.

SmartLipo works well on men and women that are unable to get rid of stubborn fat through traditional methods like diet and exercise

Male chest When fat is stored in the chest it can give off the appearance feminine looking breasts. This not only affects men from a physical standpoint, but it can also cause quite a bit of insecurities and concerns. SmartLipo can eliminate this fat and leave the chest looking more sculpted and masculine. This procedure can be life-changing for men and allows them to regain their self-confidence.

Am I a good candidate for SmartLipo? SmartLipo works well on men and women that are unable to get rid of stubborn fat through traditional methods like diet and exercise. Patients should be at their ideal weight and in good mental and physical health. Patients should also have realistic expectations and understand that SmartLipo should not be viewed as a weight loss procedure. It will sculpt and slim problem areas, but the procedure will not remove every ounce of fat from the body.

How can I find out more? If you’d like to learn more about SmartLipo then please give our Seguin office a call to setup an initial consultation

with Dr. Melanie Carreon, in-person or phone (830) 3799266. Dr. Carreon is a board-certified medical doctor who focuses on minimally surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCIATICA

INFORMED PATIENT

By Dr. Michael Mckee ~ Spine Care of San Antonio

Sciatica is a feeling of pain, numbness, or tingling in the legs. Even though you feel the symptoms in your legs, the underlying cause of sciatica is pinching or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the nerve that connects your legs to your brain.

What Causes Sciatica Misaligned or displaced vertebrae in the neck or back are the most common causes sciatica. This is usually the result of an acute injury to the back or neck. Whiplash from a car accident is the most common culprit, but sciatica can also follow sports-related injuries or even a night sleeping on an uncomfortable surface. When displaced, vertebrae apply uncomfortable pressure to the sciatic nerve, causing pain and tingling in the legs. Pregnancy can also cause sciatica, according to Medicine Net. The rapid change in weigh distribution associated with pregnancy applies unusual pressure to the spine, irritating nerve channels.

Symptoms It may take a few days after an injury for symptoms of sciatica to emerge. The condition usually only affects one leg, and it may be more painful when sitting or lying down than it is when standing up. According the Mayo Clinic, the amount of pain can vary widely from case to case. Some patients report mild aching, while others report a constant, excruciating burning sensation. In extreme causes, sciatica is associated with the inability to control the bowels

32

mdmonthly.com

Treatments Several good treatment options are available to patients suffering from sciatica. In mild cases, rest and relaxation may be enough to abate the pain. In more severe cases, a doctor may recommend several treatments. Muscle Relaxants: Following a traumatic event like a car accident, muscles in the back and neck spasm and contract, pressuring the sciatic nerve. In these cases, a quick round of prescription muscle relaxants can relieve the pressure and facilitate a full recovery. Massage and Acupuncture: These treatments work like natural muscle relaxants, allowing doctors to keep the prescription drugs behind the counter. Studies of massage and acupuncture to relieve sciatica have generated mixed results, but the treatments are effective for some people. Chiropractic Care: In cases where sciatica results from displaced vertebrae, chiropractic treatments can relieve pressure on the nerve. The chiropractor applies pressure to the spine at specific points, allowing misaligned vertebrae to slide back into place. Sciatica is a painful and potentially dangerous condition, but it is possible to make a full and rapid recovery with the right medical care. If you are experiencing pain and numbness in your legs, contact Spine Care of San Antonio today.

T

ension headaches are like a toothache, aren’t they? Perhaps they’re not debilitating, but they might cost you precious work time, make it difficult to focus, and create an extra burden in your life. If you suffer from tension headaches, you probably would like some easy, accessible, and natural solutions that will work in a hurry, right? Read on for some natural secrets, and easy and quick fixes to subdue those pesky, life-complicating tension headaches.

WHAT ARE TENSION HEADACHES AND WHO GETS THEM? Before we discover the solutions for relieving tension headaches, let’s first establish a bit of background on them. About 30 to 80 percent of the population suffers from tension headaches; 3 percent suffer from “chronic” tension headaches. And if you’re a woman, according to the research, you are twice more likely to deal with a tension headache than your male counterpart.

HOW TO DEFINE A TENSION HEADACHE? Tension headaches, or “stress headaches” as we’ve come to know them, are the most common type of headaches. Unique from migraines which tend to run in clusters and create neurological symptoms, tension headaches create bands of pressure surrounding the head or create tension around the back of the neck,. According to the same clinical trials, tension headaches are thought to be caused by environmental factors, and their range lasts from 30 minutes to several days. As documented by the Mayo Clinic, some of the other theories surrounding the causes of tension headaches include such factors as stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and hunger or thirst.

A TENSION HEADACHE DISCLAIMER As always, if a headache persists, you should consult your healthcare provider. But what if there were some natural ways you could use to rid yourself of a tension headache before it gets out of hand? When a tension headache erupts, many recommend over the counter remedies or prescription medications. Before you reach for the lined pharmacy shelf, however, here are some natural ways you can stop tension headaches in their tracks.

Peppermint essential oil is loved by its users for this very reason, according to oil-testimonials.com. Here, many have noted peppermint essential oil has ceased some of the worst headaches for its users, immediately and on contact.

ACUPRESSURE When pressure is added to the webbing between the thumb and the first finger it is known to relieve the pressure of a tension headache. It’s one of those valuable ancient secrets found on chopra.com; implement it frequently. Simply pinch the fleshy part of your right or left hand between the thumb and forefinger and hold with pressure for one minute. Whether it calms the mind or releases the stresses of the body, acupressure is worth a try to help relieve tension from the head or neck.

MEDITATION Meditation is an Eastern practice often used in the Western world to combat a host of anxiety and stress disorders. Tension headaches are no different. They respond favorably to sitting quietly, following the breath, and letting stressful thoughts come and go. Meditation is worth practicing anyhow, but sitting quietly for 10 minutes will help to reduce tension in the body and mind. Try it even if you don’t have a headache; it will help keep your body stress and anxiety free.

WARM OR COLD COMPRESSES Warm or cold compresses can be easily used to remedy a headache. The general thinking is that cold compresses work best for migraines and warm compresses are best for tension-type headaches. With this thought in mind, rice packs are excellent for use as heat packs. An expert tip is to fill a sock with rice, pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, and apply it to the forehead and temple area.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

There are many ways to relieve tension headaches and a host of over the counter remedies to try. Next time you have a tension headache, why not take a natural approach? To prevent your body from the harmful effects of over the counter remedies, natural secrets to relieving tension headaches do exist! Aren’t they worth your while to consider? Give these natural approaches a try the next time you have tension in your head and neck. You might fall in love with the results.

Essential oils are a natural solution to pain control. Therapeutic grade essential oils are commercially available and can be used to stop a tension headache at its source. Drip one or two drops of peppermint essential oil in your palm and dab it on your temple area.

Tekton Research is looking for research study participants to enroll in clinical trials. Call or email us to see if you qualify for one of our currently enrolling studies. You can also join our database for study opportunities that will be starting in the near future.

SEX LIVES The graying of America is upon us. By 2030, steventy-two million Americans will be over the age of 65. Some things improve with age, like fine wine, whisky, and cast-iron skillets. Our health and our bodies do not. Declines in sexual health occur in both men and women as we age. Changes such as decreased libido, loss of stamina, and diminished satisfaction are commonly reported by both genders as they age. Lack of desire is less common in men than women, affecting around 15% of men. Research suggests that 40% of men in their 40’s suffer from erectile dysfunction, and increases beyond that. Younger men are experiencing declining sexual health also. Erectile dysfunction in men is often due to undiagnosed health conditions that compromise the blood vessels and nerves to the penis. Erectile dysfunction is a physical condition that creates emotional distress for the men affected by it. It can lead to emotional isolation from their partners, resulting in strained personal relationships and depression. Men don’t need to suffer from declining sexual function and the emotional distress that accompanies it. Therapies exist that can optimize sexual function that go far beyond Viagra. Testosterone replacement can be a safe, effective option for many. There are important things to be aware of when considering hormone therapy, and a detailed medical history needs to be taken by providers. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and vascular diseases need to be checked for and treated if diagnosed, since they are common causes of erectile dysfunction. Side effects of medications must be considered because they can compromise sexual function. Patients should always check the credentials of the person who is treating them with hormones, and there is nothing wrong with getting second opinions. Testosterone therapy is a safe option that can significantly improve sexual function, as well as improve overall health. Beyond that, regenerative therapies, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections into the penis, can help to improve the firmness of erections, stamina, and even increase sensation. Another promising therapy called extracorporeal shock wave therapy, uses acoustic sound waves that can break up plaques blocking the blood supply to the penis and improve function. It can be used in conjunction with growth factors injected into the penis to help maintain or improve men’s sexual health. Stem cell injections can also be used, with or without shock wave therapy, and show encouraging results as well. These procedures involve minimal discomfort and can be very effective in maintaining sexual health. I encourage men to seek help as soon as they notice a decline in their sexual performance. Early intervention can preserve function more effectively than waiting until loss of function has progressed and is more difficult to repair. More importantly, like the proverbial canary in the coalmine, the change in sexual function may be a warning sign of other health conditions. Seeking medical care may alert your doctor and lead to early diagnosis. The sex-life you save may be your own.

Recognize a Concussion Any bump or blow to the head has concussion potential. Concussion symptoms may occur immediately or days/weeks later and can include: • Headache

• Concentration or memory issues

• Nausea

• Change in sleep habits

• Dizziness

• Feeling sluggish/”foggy”

• Blurred vision

• Light sensitivity

If you suspect someone may be experiencing a concussion after a blow to the head, ask these questions immediately, and then again a few minutes later. If the individual doesn’t know the answers or seems confused, consult a healthcare professional immediately. • What day is it? • What month is it? • Repeat these words: Girl, dog, green (ask to repeat again a few minutes later) • Repeat the days of the week backward

t the DHR Health Neuroscience Institute in the Rio Grande Valley, a core group of nationally-recognized doctors have dedicated their lives to providing excellent neurologic care to their adult and pediatric patients, many of whom come to them with challenging brain and nervous system disorders. DHR, or Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, is the first Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center in the region. It is also the leading multidisciplinary neuroscience group in the Rio Grande Valley and the premier center for minimally invasive neurosurgery and neuroendoscopy. The doctors providing care at DHR Health Neuroscience Institute are Dr. Michael J. Burke, Pediatric and Adult Intracranial Neurosurgery; Dr. Sohum Desai, Medical Director of Neurosurgery; Dr. Zuka Khabbazeh, Medical Director of Neurology; Dr. Patrick Noonan, Comprehensive Stroke Medical Director; Dr. Juan Padilla, Chief of Neuroscience; and Dr. Achal Patel, Brain and Spine Neurosurgery.

“The mission and the vision of DHR is to become the premier center for providing care,” said Khabbazeh. “No matter how complicated or how ill the patients are, we want to provide services to those people, so they don’t have to travel out of the Valley.” Some of the services the neurosurgeons and neurologists at DHR Health provide are neuroendovascular surgery (less invasive surgery for acute stroke intervention), neurological rehabilitation, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, stroke treatment, neuro-intensive care and spine surgery. DHR also conducts procedures such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) where electrodes are implanted in certain areas of the brain and can affect certain cells and chemicals. DBS is a surgery for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. “It is a surgery that helps patients with Parkinson’s who suffer from the three cardinal symptoms—tremors, rigidity and dyskinesia, which can be described as abnormal movements,” Desai said. “DBS can certainly help reduce the amount of medications you take and can help with side effects with meds. It can help you live a long, normal life through longer periods of the day.”

According to a comprehensive study by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2006, up to one billion people worldwide are affected by some form of neurological disorder – from epilepsy to Alzheimer’s disease to stroke and headaches. An estimated 6.8 million people die every year as a result of neurological disorders. Like Khabbezeh, Padilla, too, would like to make neurological patients’ lives a lot easier by providing them the best care closer to home, so they don’t have to travel far to find the answers they seek about their health. “We prefer to bring experts down to the Valley to prevent people and their families from having the need to migrate north to receive the treatment we can give them here,” Padilla said. Padilla got his start at DHS seven years ago. He explains “my colleagues and I see many types of patients at DHS, but we mostly see people with brain tumors and spine problems.”They also see people who have suffered from strokes. Although most of the surgeries DHR perform are elective, Padilla said they are seeing an increase in intracranial hemorrhages and trauma since DHR is a comprehensive stroke center.

“I enjoy seeing the improvement in patients’ condition and their faces full of joy once they are healed,” he said. “This is very fulfilling for me.” Padilla remembers one specific patient, a woman named Thelma, who came to DHR with a malignant brain tumor. Although a patient with this kind of tumor only lives for about a year, Thelma fought hard and lived for five years. During this time, Padilla witnessed her praying for other patients who were sick when she was receiving care herself. “This really touched my heart and taught me about the power of faith,” he said. As a neurosurgeon at DHR, Patel thinks back to one of his patients who came to the Institution with a cervical fracture and severe neck pain with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of spinal arthritis. The patient underwent a major anterior and posterior cervical operation for the realignment of his spine and stabilization along with decompression of his spinal cord. “He recovered well and he is back to his normal activities without any symptoms,” Patel said. “He was very appreciative.”

YOUNG ATHLETES SHOULD AVOID SPORTS

S

ports drinks are widely popular, and used by people of all ages. But, children and teenagers are particularly fond of sports drinks. In fact, studies have shown that these “thirst quenchers” are consumed by 62% of adolescents every day. But sports drinks can be awful for teeth and can give cavities the fuel they need to thrive. Below, we outline why sports drinks are terrible for teeth.

PACKED WITH SUGAR

Did you know that sports drinks can contain more sugar than leading cola beverages, with as much as 19 grams of sugar per serving? All of that sugar does considerable damage to tooth enamel and can lead to cavities and other oral issues. Sugar helps provide bad oral bacteria with the fuel it needs to create cavities. Some of the leading sports drinks can contain up to 21 grams of sugar per 20 Oz bottle – which is just over half of the amount sugar that your body needs on a daily basis, according to the American Heart Association.

HIGH AMOUNT OF ACID

A 2012 study showed that sports drinks are often highly acidic. This acid interferes with the mouth’s ability to regulate a healthy pH balance, and can lead to the enamel erosion. Tooth enamel is literally the hardest substance in the human body, but it’s no match for a steady stream of acid.

SODIUM OVERLOAD

Some sports drinks contain up to 200 milligrams of sodium per serving. Keep in mind that a serving is usually 8 ounces, which means that a large bottle (20 – 32 Oz.) of the leading sports drink can have more sodium than a bag of potato chips. The sodium actually plays a hydration trick on your body, and makes you want to drink more water – thereby quenching your thirst and hydrating your body.

TRY WATER INSTEAD

If your child is participating in an intense game with constant movement and an elevated heart rate, a small serving of sports drinks may be okay on occasion. But, most youth sports don’t involve that level of activity, and water is almost always the better choice. Water – especially water with fluoride – helps strengthen and clean teeth. With every sip, water cleans teeth by ridding them of any leftover foods or acids. It also washes away bacteria and sugars that can eventually lead to cavities. Water has zero calories, and helps restore the pH balance in your mouth to fight unhealthy levels of acid. But, water also hydrates the body as athletes sweat. While there is no exact measurement, the American Council on Exercise recommends that people consume 7 – 10 ounces of water every 10 – 20 minutes of exercise, depending upon how much the individual sweats.

SPINE CONSULTANTS RELIEF FROM NECK, SPINE PAIN HELPING ELIMINATE CARBON USE OF SOLAR ENERGY By Kiko Martinez

T

he thought of going under the knife for surgery can be daunting for anyone, especially if it involves the brain or spine. However, Dr. Ladislau Albert, board certified neurosurgeon at Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants, wants to reassure you that there’s nothing to be scared about. “We know that most people are afraid of coming to see a neurosurgeon or spine surgeon because of the possibility of surgery,” Dr. Albert said. “But, people need to know they’re coming to see us for an evaluation. We want to examine them, to go through their medical history and imaging, and explain to them the best possible solutions for their symptoms or condition. We want to help treat their spine or cranial conditions, and many times it does not have to involve surgery.” Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants (NSC) offers treatment and surgery for a variety of spinal and cranial symptoms and conditions, as well as non-surgical pain management for neck, back or spine pain. The practice is led by Dr. Gerardo Zavala, board certified neurosurgeon, complex spine specialist and medical director.

Shelbi Jerry

“We tend to do many of the small, minimally-invasive surgeries with a tiny incision, and patients get up and go

home the next day,” Dr. Zavala said. “We are also well versed in the larger, complex surgeries that might require a spinal fusion or having some type of hardware inserted.” Dr. Albert adds, “Overall, we’re both pretty conservative when it comes to surgery. We like to see our patients try many avenues of conservative pain management before we seriously consider surgery. We’re proud of the fact that we don’t jump to the knife immediately. We like to talk with our patients first to see what’s going on with them.”

Some of the spinal conditions that NSC treats include disc and vertebrae conditions, sciatica and nerve pain, and scoliosis and other structural deformities. “Many times, a patient comes to us, and all they need is an evaluation,” Dr. Albert said. “Their primary care physician orders an MRI and it shows something. Their physician is not sure whether it’s concerning or not. So the patient comes to us, and we reassure them that this is just a normal part of aging and their spine doesn’t look that bad at all. We can help your symptoms get better through medications or therapy.” NSC also treats cranial tumors, cranial circulatory diseases and aneurysms, seizures and neuromuscular conditions, as well as elevated intracranial pressure. “We treat brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and cranial malformation that can cause headaches,” Dr. Albert said. “We can provide relief and treatment for patients.” Nonsurgical pain care is also a major part of treatment that NSC provides. A pain specialist evaluates patients and then treats them by referring them to therapy or prescribing the appropriate nerve or pain medications, such as muscle relaxers. They also offer inoffice procedures, such as injections of nerve blockers and other treatments as needed, Dr. Albert explained. For the staff of Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants, seeing an improvement in a patient’s symptoms is always rewarding. “Oftentimes, they’re in a lot of pain and suffering,” Dr. Albert said. “Through treatments we provide whether surgical or nonsurgical, it’s a good feeling to see how their lives become better.” Dr. Zavala earned his medical degree from the Long School of Medicine at the University of

Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and did his internship there as well. He did his residency in neurosurgery at Loyola University Medical Center, where he also did a fellowship in complex spinal surgery. He is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and an associate professor of neurosurgery at UTHSCSA. Dr. Albert graduated with his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in New York. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Westchester Medical Center, where he also did a fellowship in complex spinal surgery. He is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. For more information about NSC, visit www.neurosurgeryandspineconsultants.com Meanwhile, in addition to being on the forefront of offering cuttingedge neurosurgery and pain management, NSC is a medical leader in helping to eliminate our carbon footprint by choosing to rely on solar energy instead of fossil fuels to power its facility. Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants have found that using solar energy to provide electricity yields great benefits. Four years ago, they worked with South Texas Solar Systems to have solar panels installed to their medical facility. “Solar energy for our practice has been very helpful and costeffective,” Dr. Zavala said. “We’re pleased to have solar panels on our building for a variety of reasons. One of our mission statements is to be modernized and that’s what using solar energy does for us.” San Antonio-based South Texas Solar Systems has been designing, installing, and maintaining solar systems throughout Texas since 2007. The company’s mission is to provide clean, renewable energy to businesses and homeowners to help them save significantly on their electric bills. Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants could very well be one of the first medical practices in the Alamo City to take advantage of the sun’s powerful rays to provide electricity and thermal energy for its building. “I think solar energy is the future of energy in America and the world at large,” Dr. Albert said. “The sun is such a natural resource and available everywhere. It makes

sense to harness it and use it to create clean power, and it doesn’t leave a carbon footprint.” Margot Robertson Prevost and her business partner, Shelbi Jary, who operate Sustainable, a sales and marketing firm that works with renewable companies and products, referred Neurosurgery & Spine Center to South Texas Solar Systems. “I knew South Texas Solar Systems had the manpower and know-how to get the job done,” Prevost said. “They did a great job. I’ve been working with South Texas Solar Systems for the past five years on our solar projects.” South Texas Solar Systems installed a 54.9 Kw system to the medical facility with 183 300 watt LG neon solar panels, averaging 3.5 megawatts of production a year. Job Soto, solar technician with South Texas Solar Systems, said the number one reason homeowners and businesses have solar panels installed is because of the tremendous savings on their electric bill. “Rather than relying on the grid for all their energy needs during the day, they can produce their own energy with solar panels to power their homes, such as air conditioners, refrigerators or fans,” Soto said. “If they’re not drawing off the grid, then people are not paying for energy from their utility company.” Homeowners and businesses, Soto added, are automatically eligible to receive a 30 percent Federal Tax Credit when they have solar panels installed. Additionally, when a commercial customer gets solar panels, they receive an accelerated depreciation schedule, so that they’re able to write off the system quicker. South Texas Solar Systems will also service and maintain solar panels that were installed by another company. “We’re the only company that offers this service,” Soto said. Soto explained that solar panels draw power from the sun, by creating DC (direct current) electricity from the sun. The current flows towards the Inverter where the DC energy is transforming into AC (alternate current) energy, which is primarily what your home or business runs off of. When the solar system produces more electricity than needed during peak sun hours, excess electricity is sent to the utility company. South Texas Solar Systems, he added, is in support of the SA Climate Action & Adaptation Plan. “We are helping eliminate our city’s carbon footprint with our work and community involvement,” he said. South Texas Solar Systems was founded by James Hiebert and has offices in San Antonio, McAllen and Laredo. For more information, visit www.txsolarsystems.com or call (210) 361-4252.

Guidelines to Get the Radiant Skin of Your Dreams WOMEN’S HEALTH By Woodlands Medical Aesthetics

mdmonthly.com

63

D

o you dream of having healthy, radiant skin that you can show off to the world without an ounce of concealer? To some, this may sound like a fairy tale, but there are many ways that you can improve the appearance of your skin without spending a fortune. By following some important guidelines, you’ll be on your way to clear and vibrant skin.

UPGRADE YOUR BEDDING

USE PRODUCTS THAT ARE RIGHT FOR YOU

CONSIDER PROBIOTICS

There are a few basic products that everyone should add to their skincare routine. An Antioxidant, Sunscreen and Retin A (or Retinol if you are in your twenties).

Improving your gut health is a foundation for clear, healthy skin, and a daily probiotic can help. However, certain strains may be better for the skin than others. For example, the lactobacillus rhamnosus strain is often recommended for the relief of eczema, while acne sufferers may find lactobacillus acidophilus to be a better option.Do your research and consult with a doctor if you are interested in adding a probiotic to your health regimen.

AVOID OVER-SCRUBBING YOUR FACE Exfoliating is beneficial in moderation; this is the removal of dead skin cells that leave you with smooth skin. However, the use of abrasive cleansers shouldn’t be a part of your daily skincare routine. Over-scrubbing can do more harm than good, leading to broken blood vessels, dryness, redness, and irritation. If you suspect that you’ve been over-scrubbing, immediately decrease how often you exfoliate.

ALWAYS USE A HIGH SPF SUNSCREEN When it comes to sunscreen, not all options are created equal, especially if your goal is to fight discoloration and loss of elasticity. Sunscreen of at least SPF 50 is recommended to fight the potential signs of sun damage, including age spots and premature wrinkles.

ADDRESS YOUR ACNE CONCERNS If you notice breakouts and acne, it is important to address your concerns with a dermatologist. What may begin as one simple blemish can quickly transform into a bigger skin issue. This is especially true for teens, and fighting acne when the first signs appear can prevent acne scarring, skin infections, and other long-term issues.

AVOID REFINED CARBOHYDRATES There are many reasons to avoid refined carbohydrates, including those in white bread, potatoes, and white rice. What many people don’t know is that the problems extend further than your waistline, as your skin may also be impacted. These foods cause inflammation which might affect the skin and lead to breakouts.

Upgrading your sheets from cotton to silk can do wonders for your skin. A silk pillowcase can help your skin feel soft and look refreshed each morning. Considering that your face will press against these materials for eight hours per night, it is easy to see why upgrading to a better fabric can be an important change.

ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP After a long day at the office, it is tempting to just drop off to sleep without washing your face. The problem is that allowing grit, grime, dirt, and makeup to stay behind on the skin can cause some serious damage. Leaving this behind at night while the skin attempts to repair itself will weaken the skin barrier, leading to rapid aging. Plus, makeup wipes alone aren’t enough to properly clean the skin. Make sure you follow through with your normal cleansing routine.

ADD HEALTHY FATS INTO YOUR DIET A diet rich in healthy fats is a great way to boost your complexion. Fish is an excellent addition to any diet, as salmon, mackerel, and sardines offer omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s offer anti-inflammatory properties and keep the lining of the cells moist. This can provide the skin with a clear, dewy appearance.

TAKE STEPS TO REPAIR OLD DAMAGE While prevention is ideal, should your skin suffer from hyperpigmentation or sun damage, you should still try and fix the issue. When it comes to dermatological fixes, laser treatment is the top choice. However, medical grade creams can help to reduce pigmentation and spots. You don’t have to be unhappy with the appearance of your skin.
