We l c o m e

Hello!

We are Ben, Raquel, Erica and Joe, the four elected officers who lead your Students’ Union. It’s our job to represent you and your views as students, and empower you to improve your experience at university. MDXSU also provides lots of opportunities and services for you to take advantage of as a student, such as the MDXSU Advice service, work placements and a packed annual events calendar – including the Freshers’ programme you are about to be a part of! Before we were voted into our current full-time roles by students, we were Middlesex students just like you – and we know what an amazing experience being a student here really is. You are about to embark on such an important part of your life, and your Students’ Union is here to help you every step of the way. Keep hold of this guide for more information about your Students’ Union, and turn to page 32 for your go-to Welcome Month events planner. About us

About Us

Q

So, who are Middlesex Students’ Union?

When you become a student at Middlesex University, you also become a member of Middlesex Students’ Union. We are independent from the university and a non-profit organisation, meaning every penny we make goes back into your student experience. We are led by students, for students, and you’re the focus of everything we do.

Q

What do you do for students?

w w w. m d x s u . c o m

Your Student Officers are the voice of students on campus, making sure your views are heard in university decisions, and campaigning with you on issues you care about.

6

BSc Adult Nursing

Led by students...?

Not only do your ideas and views shape everything we do – the Students’ Union is literally led by students! At the head of MDXSU are four full-time Student Officers – one President and three Vice Presidents – and six part-time School Voice Leaders, as well as other elected student representatives – find out more information on page 8.

Q

I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Students’ Union - I have met so many amazing people and it has helped me build loads of skills for the future.

Events, opportunities and services are provided to support you throughout your studies at Middlesex – whether you want to meet new people, boost your employability, discover new interests or access advice. Check out the following pages to find out more!

Since being involved in the Students’ Union I can’t tell you how many things I’ve learned and how much it has enriched my time here at Middlesex. The MDXSU residential trip opened my eyes to the opportunities for change not just within our own university, but on a national scale. BA Dance Performance

Have Your Say Making your views heard

Middlesex Students’ Union acts as the voice for all Middlesex students. To ensure you have the best possible time at university, we want your voice to be heard! From representing your academic interests, or developing a community on campus – let us know. If you’ve got a suggestion on improving student life visit www.mdxsu.com/student-voice to find out more.

If you have an idea that you think would improve your experience as a student, speak to one of your elected representatives, or submit your idea for others students to vote on at www.mdxsu.com/ideas-for-change

Student Voice Leaders

Each year of every programme will have a Student Voice Leader - a representative for students on that particular course. Student Voice Leaders gather student feedback, then work with the University and Students’ Union to resolve issues that may arise during your studies. As a Student Voice Leader, you could make a genuine difference to your course, whilst gaining valuable skills for your CV and getting to know all of your coursemates. You can nominate yourself to become a Student Voice Leader during Welcome Month. Nominate yourself, visit www.mdxsu.com/voice-leaders

H a v e Yo u r S a y

If you’re passionate about making a difference, stand as a Student Voice Leader! It gave me the chance to connect with my peers and really make a positive impact, both on my programme and in the lives of my fellow students. MSc Media Management

Elections

Because students lead the Students’ Union, there are a number of different elected leadership roles available for students, whatever your interests and time commitment. Standing for election is a great way to enhance your skills as well as making a lasting impact at Middlesex. Find out more at www.mdxsu.com/elections

Make A Change

Make a CHANGE

Looking for creative and exciting ways to shape your student experience?

The student movement is one of the most progressive forces for change in the world. This year your Student Officers have pledged to work on improving our mental health support systems, lowering the cost of being a Middlesex student, and regulating and reforming student housing. As a Middlesex University student, campaigning starts here.

Have a look at some of the great things Middlesex students achieved over the past couple of years: Freeze the Fees We marched in protest of the increase in tuition fees and persuaded the University to not raise tuition fees for 2nd and 3rd year students in 2017. More Microwaves We campaigned successfully to provide more microwaves on campus to allow students to save money by bringing in their own food. Less Hassle For Your Tassel After a two year, hard-fought campaign, we achieved our goal to offer two graduation ceremonies a year. This means that more students are able to attend their graduation and celebrate their success. Gender Neutral Toilets We worked with LGBT+ staff and students to introduce Middlesex University’s first gender neutral toilet, meaning that more students can feel comfortable when using the bathroom.

w w w. m d x s u . c o m

24 Hour Grove B We successfully campaigned for longer opening hours of campus facilities, including 24 hour access to the Grove B building.

10

Access to Dyslexia Testing We fought for every student rights to an affordable dyslexia test, ensuring equal access for international students. Refugees Welcome We campaigned with other local organisations to resettle over 50 Syrian refugees in Barnet.

Joining our campaigns is a great way to meet new people and boost your employability, as well as fighting for causes you care about. Plus, you will get all the training, skills building and support you need to give you the power to make the changes you want. To find out more, visit

Ongoing Projects

Once we win a campaign the ongoing resulting service becomes an MDXSU-run project. Here are some services students won which we currently provide:

#FreePeriods We provide free sanitary products (tampons, pads and moon cups) from the MDXSU Welcome Desk every Tuesday 10am-4pm – and on every other day of the week you can buy the products at cost price. All products are sustainable and organic.

MDX Home Community Kitchen

We helped to turn a student’s idea into reality, working with the University to set up the FreeWheelers bike scheme – enabling students to hire out bikes for free on campus. Hire out bikes from the MDXSU Welcome Desk, or join one of our free guided tours during Freshers’ Week (page 48). For more information, visit mdxsu.com/cycling.

MDX Home provides local people in need with hot meals, legal and medical services, and a safe, friendly place to socialise and relax. The Community Kitchen is run by students on the first Saturday of each month in MDX House. Volunteer at our upcoming events on Saturday 7th October and Saturday 4th November, 10am - 3pm.

STUDENT GROUPS & COmmunities Joining a society, community or liberation group is a great way to meet new people, develop your interests whilst having fun.

Societies

Societies are groups based around a particular shared interest or background, and we have over 70 at MDX – from religious and cultural groups to general interest and course-based societies. Have you got a passion or interest which doesn’t currently have a society related to it at Middlesex? We’ll help you get it set up - email us at societies@mdx.ac.uk for more details.

Having been part of the Debating Society for two years and now leading it as the president has not only provided a platform for my passion but also extended my contacts from all around the university. Being involved in the society has given me different perspective of university life that has helped me broaden my horizon on subject matters.

MDXSU DISABLED STUDENTS

This group represents students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean heritage. The group has worked on the #RefugeesWelcome campaign – which led to the resettlement of 50 Syrian refugees in our local borough – and a lobbying campaign to ensure MDXSU and Middlesex University take a stance against the Government’s PREVENT agenda. blackstudents@mdx.ac.uk www.mdxsu.com/black-studentsgroup

These organisations, who we work with in collaboration with North London Citizens, are a mixture of businesses, faith or community groups.

My Community Placement at a local school allowed me to develop what I was learning on my Media programme. I was inspired by the creativity by the of the pupils I worked with and by how they grew in confidence. I had such a good time working alongside other Middlesex students and meeting some amazing young people. I’d recommend this experience to anyone. 2nd Year Advertising, Public Relations and Media
