Planned obsolescence strategy is a design and marketing strategy which applied in many famous mobile phone company. It is to plan or design a product with an artificially limited useful life so that to encourage the customers to keep consuming, finally, to keep the company sales and profits. This strategy is original from 1950s in vehicle area. This image would use information visualization method to mapping the history of planned obsolescence strategy firstly. Secondly, it would introduce the types of it and then analysis that how this strategy applied in smartphone company, especially in The Apple. Finally, it would analysis the advantages and disadvantages of it, which could support my further assessment.

To Whom This May Concern, In my capacity of Yan Liu’s course mentor for SDES9212 Design Studio Project, I am writing to highly recommend this potential candidate for your program. Yan’s team impressed me at the very beginning because they chose Food Future as their topic of grand challenge, which is a novel and interesting topic. To my surprise, her team achieved an excellent outcome in this explorative topic by doing in-depth research on substitutable protein (insect, artificial meat, and algae) and proposing designs accordingly.
RECOMMENDATION LETTER YAN LIU
In the first of the three assessments, they designed a beautifully crafted Bento Box for convincing people to accept unconventional foods, which supported their proposition in a clear and strong manner. The handheld object was the cornerstone to the design and successfully evoked curiosity to explore the box further. The tubes of unconventional food create an interactive element that clearly used the strategy of dissonance to convince the public to eat unconventional foods. Their report demonstrated good research indispensable from great efforts of investigation of biology, psychological analysis, and sociology in precedent studies. Her team got the high-distinction grade for the assessment one. The other two assessments were mainly based on individual work. They narrowed down their topic into promoting commercial insect food. Based on their investigation of low public acceptance rate of insect food due to dining habit and conventional ideas, they hoped to expand the promotion of insect food from lab and food festival to daily life in order to cope with the possible protein shortage crisis in the future. For attracting the public for trying the food made from insect, Yan designed a biscuit compressor which could involve the eaters to squash and compress biscuit printed with the original insect material. It is an innovative proposal and artistic design for inviting the public to have a try. She made a bold attempt in this project and successfully integrated promotion of insect food and design.

For the A&D Annual 18 Graduate Exhibition, I strongly recommended Yan and her group's works to participate in the exhibition. Yan further made adjustments and actively came to the school to discuss the form of the exhibition. She also designed beautiful insect biscuit packaging, as well as insect exhibition utensils and projection demonstration. Although the course is over, Yan still seizes every opportunity for improving her work and makes her works more enriched. Yan is far-sighted in her design and she dares to challenge unconventional thinking, which brings a positive influence to her group. The collaboration between Yan and her team members also counted for their high-quality teamwork. I appreciate the design ability of each team member and their design outcome as a whole. Yan's visual diary is a strong evidence of how she has accumulated and experimented. Prototypes were repeatedly overthrown, but each time Yan got new inspirations for the final prototype. I believe Yan's qualities like teamwork and striving for excellence will counter for her greater success in the future. To whom it may concern, It is with great pleasure I am writing this letter of recommendation for Miss Yan Liu who I have known for two years while she was a student in the Faculty of Art and Design, UNSW. I am very pleased to offer strong support her application for admittance into the Master’s program at your Institution. I know that Yan’s future fellow students and staff members will derive enormous benefit from her wonderful attitude to learning, companionship and inherently helpful, positive nature. I taught Yan in three different courses in the Master of Design program. These subjects included: - Domestic Futures SDES9300 (S1 2017) - Critical Approaches to Design Practice SDES9210 (S2 2017) - Cultural and Identity SDES9211 (S1 2018). In my role as class Tutor and course Lecturer, I was able to closely observe Yan’s professional competence develop significantly. She impressed me with her talent, passion and dedicated approach to her work. One particular educational highlight was the SDES92111 studio outcomes. Yan’s assessment outcomes were original and of an overall exceptional standard in this subject. The first project was a design for a Polish family that had recently immigrated to Australia. The focus of the assignment was the notion of ‘Home’, taking into close consideration the emotional and cultural needs of three generations in the family as well as child suffering from PTSD after recovery from cancer. The outcome was thoughtfully conceived with strong evidence of well-researched conceptual development resulting in a well resolved unique outcome. Yan demonstrated strong potential for future professional development in this assessment, due to her broad vision, insightful investigation techniques and refined design skills.
Yan is ambitious to succeed in her chosen field of study, and she has demonstrated extraordinary motivation and consistent commitment to her studies along with excellent analytical ability, oral communication, and interpersonal skills. I enthusiastically recommend her to your program. Please contact me if further information or endorsement is required, as I am keen to ensure her application is appropriately and fully supported. Kindest Regards, Bernadett Butson Design Lecturer & Tutor Faculty of Art & Design University of NSW PO Box 259, Paddington, NSW, 2021, Australia. E-Mail: b.butson@unsw.edu.au
YAN LIU RECOMMENDATION LETTER
In the SDES92111Australian ballet culture study project, I identified in Yan a well-rounded designer with strong independent learning skills. Yan’s research in this project was very strong, demonstrating a strong capacity for in-depth independent research and development in her work. The design outcome was unique, innovative, visually cohesive and aesthetically appealing. Yan utilised a variety of different media drawing inspiration from her training in jewellery, space, product, and animation to convey her thoughts and express her design philosophy and outcome in an innovative and inspiring format.
