hen it comes to dining and cuisine, Metropolitan New Jersey brings so much to the table—and that is why we produce The Table two times each year. We want to showcase all our area has to offer across a vast diversity of cuisine, ambiance and concepts. We produce this guide, in partnership with the Meadowlands Liberty Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Meadowlands Regional Chamber, to provide our residents and visitors with a tasting of some of the best food and event venue options in our region. Cold weather is upon us, and now is the perfect time to look at some of the ‘comfort food’ that is popping up on menus across our area. The comfort food craze is a national trend and, lucky for us, our area is leading with scrumptious options that will keep you warm on cold winter days. Check out this feature on page 4 where we present a sampling of ‘comfort food’ dishes available at local restaurants. Did you know that December is the most popular month in the calendar for engagements? This is probably not surprising. But also February and November are the next most popular months. So this means that there are currently many newly engaged couples out there that will soon begin planning their weddings. We’ve taken a look at an appointed cast of area venues, giving a glimpse into some of the sites available for that special day. We encourage you to share this guide on page 20 with any newly or soon to be engaged couples. The remaining directory offerings in this guide are of a wide range, as we present you with a selection of eateries, four-star ranked restaurants, event venues, pizzerias, diners, caterers for your own events, pub fare and of course a multiplicity of ethnic cuisine. Perhaps you will find a new local gem right in your backyard—please let us know about your experiences at these restaurants and also let us know if you have a suggestion for what we should include next time. We thank you for coming to The Table and we of course we invite you back for our next edition in the Summer of 2018! Buon appetito! Warm Comfort Food For Cold Winter Days

Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Spaghetti and meatballs. Mac and cheese. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Ah, the comfort foods of home. We’ve enjoyed them in our own kitchens since we were kids—on chilly days, at family suppers, during lazy, cozy weekends. But lately, these and other classic comfort foods—many prepared with a unique twist— are popping up on menus everywhere, from chain restaurants to fine dining establishments, the local tavern and even catered events. “These dishes may not require extensive prep time or exotic ingredients, and yet are scrumptiously delicious,” said Dennis Sammarone, Executive Chef at Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment, East Rutherford. “They’re easy to make and so satisfying.” Sammarone said comfort food is an essential component at the Meadowlands Raceway restaurants. “It’s sometimes equated to ‘fast’ or ‘junk’ food but that is not the case at all. It’s food that is down to earth. Our guests are important to us, like family, and we want them to enjoy the experience.” According to Sammarone, items like pulled pork, ribs and Italian meatballs – one of his signature dishes -- offer a taste of home cooking and are definite guest favorites. What makes them so special? “They come from the heart of our kitchen and yes, the soul,” he said, sharing that he uses 94 percent ground beef, eggs, loads of garlic (eight cloves!), fresh parsley, Pecorino Romano cheese, seasoning and Italian bread, like panella. Then they are mixed by hand, fried lightly in olive oil and simmered in “Sunday Gravy” (or “Sauce”). Start boiling the water for pasta, and we’ll be there!

METROPOLITAN NEW JERSEY DINING GUIDE

Peter Arcari, Bar and Restaurant Manager of Jack Austin’s in Weehawken, agreed that home cooking is the inspiration for his menu. “There’s nothing like your mother’s cooking. What we’ve done with our food is create dishes that are comforting but with a twist, a special touch that makes them unique,” said Arcari. “Everything is made from scratch so our customers feel like they’ve come home, too.” Once listed only on the kid’s menu, macaroni and cheese has grown up. “We make our mac and cheese several ways -- with bacon, broccolini and lobster. The customers love it!” He also recommends the very popular brisket, served with smashed potatoes and house-made baked beans. “We used to prepare maybe one brisket a week. Now we make five or six a week, smoked in-house for 16 hours.” You also can snack on Brisket Sliders or enjoy a Jack Austin’s specialty Breakfast Burger (beef patty, fried egg, cheese and Taylor ham on an English muffin)—available all day. “There’s nothing like breakfast food for lunch or dinner,” Arcari said.

Find Some Comfort Around The Region

Applebee’s (Clifton) offers a delectable twist on the classic club sandwich. The Clubhouse Grille is piled high with warm ham, thick-cut turkey breast, melted cheddar and Jack cheeses with Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and a drizzle of our signature honey BBQ sauce on freshly toasted Tuscan bread. Try it with a side of Three Cheese Chicken Cavatappi, gently tossed with bruschetta, fresh basil and creamy Alfredo sauce. The name Bahama Breeze (Paramus) evokes cool summer fare with its island décor and light menu items. But think again: the Curry Goat Bowl – a traditional Caribbean curry made with slow-cooked goat, potatoes, onions and carrots, served over white rice with warm Naan bread – has all the makings of one heckuva delicious “stew.” Start off with the Bahamian Seafood Chowder, a creamy blend of shellfish and vegetables.

Bazzarelli’s (Moonachie) offers many traditional Italian favorites for lunch, dinner and take-out in this family-owned neighborhood restaurant/pizzeria that’s been wowing customers since 1971. Nothing says comfort food like Pasta e Fagioli (macaroni and beans), Ravioli al Forno (baked) or Pollo Cacciatore (chicken breast in a rich red sauce with mushrooms, onions, green olives and pepperoncini peppers served with a side of polenta). Chevys Fresh Mex (Clifton) Warm up on those chilly days – or any day, in fact – with a bowl of homemade tortilla soup. Prepared with chicken broth, diced onion and tomatoes, roasted corn jalapeno peppers, grilled chicken tortilla strips, cotija cheese (hard, crumbly) and fresh avocado, this soup will cure those winter blues. Chit Chat Diner (Hackensack) has much to offer in the way of comfort food, whether it be breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. Standouts include the Chicken & Cheddar Waffles, the Prosciutto Waffles, four choices of eggs benedict, the Sicilian Steak Sandwich and the Tex-Mex Meatloaf Sandwich. Also, the sweet potato fries are exceptional and if you want the ultimate in comfort fries, try one of their 8 varieties of hand-cut frites. Houlihan’s (Hasbrouck Heights) has many of the starters and main dishes that we’ve come to know and enjoy. But the vast menu now features selections for

the diner who may be watching calories, has dietary restrictions, wants to splurge, and everyone in between. For a taste of home, try one of their new items – slowroasted boneless short ribs, pot roast-style tender ribs in red wine gravy, served with red bliss mashed potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts with pesto cream sauce. Nobody does Irish like Shannon Rose (Clifton). It’s hard to choose from their selection of traditional dishes – there are plenty – but try the Potato Leek Soup (the menu adds “Good for the soul”), Dublin Shepherd’s Pie (made with slow-braised lamb and served with Irish soda bread, of course), or Bangers and Mash (classic Irish sausages, mashed potatoes, garlic spinach and fried leeks). La Reggia (Secaucus), nicknamed “The Little Italy of Secaucus,” prepares its meals with “modern and new interpretations” of classic Italian dishes. Comfort abounds on this menu, from the antipasti through the primo and secondo piatti (first and second dishes). For starters, try the Peperoni Ripieni della Mamma (stuffed peppers with Parmigiano bread stuffing and scamorza, a soft white cheese) but save room for the Risotto alla Pescatore (Italian rice with baby calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels and scallops). If you’re craving a taste of the sea, head to Mitchell’s Fish Market (Edgewater). There are so many selections to choose from, so you may have to make more than a few trips. For starters, sample the Maryland-style jumbo lump crab cake, served with roasted corn, tabasco mash remoulade and tartar sauce, with a cup of the Maine Lobster Bisque. Still hungry? Go for the Fisherman’s Platter (Sam Adams beer-battered shrimp, cod and clam strips with sea salt fries, hushpuppies and house-made coleslaw.) The next time you’re craving those comfort foods of home, you needn’t go far to find them. Angela Daidone is a freelance writer, editor and public relations specialist. Park Château Estate & Gardens See Our Ad On Back Cover Classical Countryside Romance & Magic This is the newest venue on our list and the latest in the reputable ‘Park’ family (Nanina’s In The Park, Park Savoy and now Park Château are all owned by business partners Barry Maurillo, Joe Maurillo and Vito Cucci) just opening doors in 2017. But it is already fast establishing itself as one of New Jersey’s premier wedding venues. The area home to the Estate was first settled in the 17th century—and the Park Château Estate & Gardens was meticulously and artistically designed to evoke the classical beauty of this historical time period. The décor and architecture evoke the illusion that one has traveled much further than a short drive from New York City, somehow being magically transported to the French countryside. 678 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ 08816 (732) 238-4200 | parkchateau.com
