There is a significant connection between oral health and overall wellness. In addition to the obvious things like brushing and flossing, with the limited access to dental care during the COVID-19 healthcare crisis, taking extra steps to minimize the chance of an emergency is more important than ever.”

BUSINESS REPORT “Now more than ever, we’re connecting Meadowlands businesses with the critical news and resources they need to stay ahead.”
NOW MORE THAN EVER! I could have never anticipated the above phrase to become as important as it is at this moment in time. Every day, I think about how the MC can be of help to businesses of all sizes in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, a crisis of such magnitude that we have never experienced in our lifetimes. No playbooks, no case studies – not even anything close. But somehow, we must hold up our members and muster the will and determination to push through this and regain some sense of “normal.” Even if it is a “new normal.” I am so proud of how we in the Meadowlands business community have followed social distancing measures and helped to flatten and reduce the curve of COVID-19. Diligence and perseverance, along with a common goodwill, have us witnessing moments of great generosity and gratitude – especially for essential workers, healthcare professionals and first responders. They have our heartfelt gratitude and our prayers for their safety, as they have been the frontline warriors of this war. Onward! Let me review quickly what we have been doing as an organization to assist businesses. 1. Once it became apparent that this pandemic would greatly impact businesses, we established an ongoing confidential email hotline COVID19Help@ Meadowlands.org for anyone who needs assistance. 2. In the weeks leading up to the first Executive Order, we established a Curated Business Resources webpage with accurate and detailed information regarding important business related topics and funding provided by state and federal government www.meadowlands.org 3. We have sought to provide crystal clear interpretations of Executive Orders, so businesses aptly understand and abide by the restrictions. 4. As soon as Executive Order was issued, we began hosting a weekly business owners / executives video conference call. This has now evolved into a Power Lunch Virtual Workforce Webinar Series, with important topics for working in the new normal. 5. Our ongoing series of Virtual Happy Hours and Networking Sessions continue to provide a sense 4
meadowlandsmedia.com

of camaraderie, motivation and off course business connections. 6. We continue to focus on advancing economic development advocacy to rebuild our regional economy 7. Our media platforms and resources have been enhanced and modified to provide members with the critical information they need to navigate the new normal. 8. Businesses in the area are turning to us as a resource. As our media reaches record-breaking numbers of viewers, we are offering cost-effective multimedia visibility packages across our digital and print platforms. From the onset of this terrible crisis, we have been thinking about how to jump-start our economy when we get to the bottom of the curve. The MC has been working alongside other business organizations to work with the State of New Jersey on such mechanisms. The weekly calls with members of Governor’s Office have been very productive and informative. While the restrictions imposed by Executive Orders have been aimed at ensuring the public health, the administration knows full well how important it is to get our economy going again. The MC will continue to play a lead role in providing you with important business intelligence as new initiatives and provisions are implemented – and we will strongly advocate on your behalf. So yes, together, we will win this war and we will rebuild our economy and our region. I still believe our best days are ahead of us!

CONTINUING EDUCATION & BUSINESS TRAINING
Online Education Offers Opportunities Completing your degree online with Felician University may be the best thing you can do at home right now
S
pending all this time at home is probably starting to feel a little odd. People are doing all sorts of things to keep themselves busy, whether its compulsively reading the news, surfing social media, doing jigsaw puzzles, or picking up an old hobby. One thing that people seem to be struggling with most is how to use this extra time productively. There’s one option that may sound a little far-fetched but is actually one of the most realistic and productive options out there: going back to school. Sound like a bad time? Think again If ever there was a time to buckle down and put in the work needed to complete your degree, it’s now. At Felician University, there’s an entire online, accelerated program built for adults to complete their degrees. It’s the perfect program for those of us stuck at home, wracking our brains for productive things to do. The program, which is 100% online, is a Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) and can be done from anywhere, including home. It was designed for adults who have already worked or are currently working in the professional world and want to advance their careers. The curriculum combines liberal arts skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking development with business techniques. Students learn how to assume managerial roles across varying industries and graduate with the ability to earn more money, acquire promotions, and continue their education—all things to help us bounce back alongside the economy. Making it affordable Felician University has been working to offer this program for adults now more than ever, because they understand how individuals and families will need to bounce back after we recover 6

from the current economic decline. That’s why the tuition for the BPS program is not only 30% discounted, but why you also have the option to earn free credits for your professional experience through Prior Learning Assessment. If you have been working in the professional world for years, you can earn the Prior Learning Assessment credits you deserve for free when you apply before May 18, 2020. It’s a huge benefit when trying to complete your degree faster. Combine this with scholarships, grants, and the ability to transfer up to 90 credits (three quarters of your degree)—and completing your degree becomes a real possibility right now. You can choose to study at your own pace by taking between one to three courses at a time and the courses take only eight weeks to complete. There’s also an option for you to advance your career while earning this degree: you can acquire professional certificates. The BPS program gives you the option to earn up to three certificates in Digital Marketing, Cybersecurity and Supply Chain Management. Taking these certificates gives you professional credentials to add to your resume while counting the credits earned toward the completion of your degree. The best part? All three certificates are also 100% online. Reap the benefits later Times are tough and there’s no disputing that. But we will come out on the other side of this, with the economy bouncing back alongside us. You’re going to want to ride that wave when things start turning around, which is why working to advance your career now will ensure that you reap more benefits later on. So if you really are serious about making sure you’re prepared to capitalize on the economy’s rise, and about making the most of your time at home, take the time now to learn more about Felician University’s BPS program: felician.edu

Do not confine your discussions with coworkers and clients to solely professional topics. Talk about your day and share thoughts regarding what’s going on in the world right now. Chances are, the people you work with share in your anxieties and emotions. Being vulnerable and showing your personal side emphasizes your multi-dimensionality as a human being – and is sure to help you build comfort and trust in each of your relationships. Don’t just be another employee to someone: be a friend. It’s the one thing everybody needs right now.
Tips for Virtual Networking
T
he COVID-19 pandemic escalated at an unprecedented speed, leaving businesses with little time to prepare and relocate to their homes, or in some cases, shut down completely. Almost overnight, the practice of social distancing — isolating oneself in an attempt to “flatten the curve” and prevent the spread of disease — became the new norm. However, even for some of those fortunate enough to be working remotely at this time, it may feel like anything but. Gone is the atmosphere of a physical office space wherein you and your coworkers are free to socialize, collaborate in-person and attend meetings in person for networking and professional development opportunities. “Work” right now might look less like a bustling hub of productivity and more like you sitting alone at a desk in the corner of your room – with nothing but a laptop and a cup of coffee to keep you company. While this setup certainly gets the job done, it can also become incredibly lonely, incredibly quickly. So how do you cope? How do you continue to network and build the relationships that are so vital to your professional livelihood when everyone is in isolation? The answer is a matter of adaptability: finding a way to fit your regular communication skills through the keyhole of technology and maximizing your digital resources to keep in contact with the people in your circle. Here are a couple tips to help you make and maintain your work-relationships in virtual space:
Communicate clearly It can be difficult for you and your coworkers/clients to communicate effectively and come to the same understandings when you’re separated by miles of distance. It’s also harder to read intent when things are said through text and it may feel like you’re (literally) left to your own devices if the people you typically turn to for help and support aren’t directly in front of you. Workplace messaging apps are in place for a reason: use them, and use them to their fullest extent. Clarify the details of that project. Confirm the date when that deadline lands on. Make sure you’re up to date on recent changes in your office or industry. Speak assertively, voicing and clarifying your thoughts when necessary; don’t just assume things, and don’t leave room for your coworkers and clients to assume things either. Despite how things physically seem, you aren’t alone in your work efforts, so don’t start treating every operation like a one-man job. Now more than ever, clear and assertive communication are essential to ensuring productivity, avoiding frustration and preserving your relationships at a time riddled with confusion. Stay professional but make things personal Before being your coworkers and clients, the people that you work with are still people. You shouldn’t treat work-relationships as mere business transactions. No one is on work-mode 24/7, so don’t be afraid to be open and honest and allow your personality to shine through your discourse.
Reach out and check in. Though it may be tempting to become complacent as you remotely lounge around at home, now is not the time. Don’t start playing the waiting game in your communications. If someone hasn’t contacted you in awhile, shoot them a quick text or email to find out what’s up. If you think someone’s struggling with an assignment or even a personal plight, let them know you’re willing to work through it with them. More than being a good coworker, this goes into being a good friend — which is the key to the lasting strength of any relationship. Take initiative and make sure the people in your network are doing alright. Ask them if they have any questions for you, if there’s anything you can do to make this transition from office to home smoother. This will make your connections far more genuine and your job far less lonely. So seldom are each of us universally united in something as powerful as the fight against this pandemic. Everyone’s world has invariably been turned upside down, but with the right mindset, we can bridge the gaps that have been created by social distancing. We can construct meaningful networks and connections, support systems and friendships — so that we might all emerge from this turmoil stronger, friendler and, most importantly, together. LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP
Leading in a Pandemic
L
ike everyone else in the COVID-19 nightmare we are living, I am deeply concerned, feeling anxious and worried about my family and those closest to me and not sure how to manage and deal with this terrible pandemic and everything connected to it. I have been teaching, coaching, writing about and most of all thinking about leadership and communication for a solid two decades. I have written five books on these subjects – and I can fill another book with everything I either don’t know or am uncertain about in terms of how best to lead and communicate in really difficult, challenging and uncertain times. That’s why I wanted to write this column. The one thing I have come to understand is that whether it is COVID-19 or any other “crisis” that shakes us to our core—one of the most important things we can do is be useful and helpful to others. It’s not that the greatest leaders aren’t scared. They are. It is that they don’t let that fear and anxiety paralyze them. It seems to me that the most effective leaders are the ones who understand and acknowledge their anxiety and insecurities in the midst of a crisis like this – but also know that they have a larger responsibility to the people they serve. The best leaders in a serious crisis need to be a better version of themselves and reach deep inside to do the kinds of things that give others direction, a sense of hope and, most of all, create a level of trust—because that is at the core of leadership and how we communicate. With this in mind, consider the following: • When communicating in any public forum, leaders must be truthful and candid. This is easier said than done, because many leaders, in the effort to give people “hope”, sugar coat how serious things really are or make statements that can’t be backed up by facts, science or reality. Giving false hope and communicating misinfor-

mation is one of the worst things any leader can do in a crisis or pandemic like we are currently facing. • Be concise. Don’t drone on. Don’t pontificate. I like to say “stay within the goalposts” when communicating. That means, identify what key points and messages a leader needs to communicate and put them “inside the goalposts.” Everything outside that goalposts is dangerous and risky. So what is outside the goalposts? Blaming others. Pointing fingers. Name calling. Making statements you can’t back up. And, frankly, letting your emotions and fear get the best of you. The greatest leaders in a crisis are disciplined and practice self-control because when a leader communicates that he or she is “out of control,” what impact do you think it has on everyone else? • The greatest leaders step aside and let others who are more knowledgeable in a particular subject area step up and speak out. The best leaders are not the ones who “talk the most” in a public forum or press conference. It seems to me New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy get this part right. Yes, they are talking a lot but they are also deferring and “handing the ball off” to other experts, particularly about public health, who can speak with authority and experience on a particular topic. After 9/11, it struck me that then New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani also did this. Great leaders are “facilitators” in May 2020
public settings, allowing others to fill in the blanks and respond to difficult and specific questions. They are not the people who are supposed to know the most about everything. • The best leaders are also the ones who, when they do say something that is either incorrect or needs clarification, have the self-confidence and level of maturity to allow a subject area expert to correct or clarify something that is said in public—without any retribution or negative consequences. • Leaders should never lose their cool. When asked a difficult or challenging question by a reporter or key stakeholder in a public forum, there is no excuse for a leader to attack the questioner. The best leaders understand that attacking the questioner as well as the question itself actually communicates a lack of confidence, because the leader clearly doesn’t want to and can’t answer the question. If the answer is “I don’t know” or “We should have handled that better” just say so. It doesn’t help anyone to express anger or personal animus toward someone simply asking a tough question. Leaders are supposed to respond with confidence, clarity and a sense of “I’ve got this as opposed to “How dare you ask me that question in public” – particularly when the question relates to the crisis at hand. • Great leaders acknowledge and empathize with the pain and struggle people are experiencing in a public health crisis. Simply stating “here

The best leaders understand that social distancing and “staying in your house” are unnatural, not easy and incredibly difficult for parents to explain, not just to themselves but to teenagers and children. I appreciate and respect leaders who acknowledge that and say so publicly. So, on one hand, leaders should communicate accurate facts, statistics and information as well as “the rules” we must abide by. But if that is all a leader does in public, why not just send a mass e-mail? • The best leaders communicate in a human and compassionate fashion. In the case of the COVID-19, they get that beyond the numbers of those infected and, worse, those who have died – recognizing that those numbers represent real people and families. I’m not saying that being a great leader and communicator in a horrific pandemic is easy, it’s not. Trust me, I struggle every day with it and I only run a small production company as well as teach, coach and write about these topics. However, I have been spending a lot of time reading about 16

presidential leadership in war time in an effort to put things in perspective. And whether it is Lincoln, Roosevelt or LBJ, it is clear that they had their doubts and fears. But the greatest leaders have one common and consistent trait, which is that they manage and deal with these inner fears and demons because they understand that their greatest responsibility is to help others get through the most challenging of times. • Stay connected with your team and key stakeholders. Whether it is your employees, board of trustees, community or other people in your orbit, the best leaders create opportunities to connect with their team and to be present, if not in person, then remotely. Technology offers a great opportunity to remain connected and in touch with others who are undoubtedly worried about their family, career, friends, 401(k) plans and health. Remaining connected with your key stakeholders with regular and consistent updates, as well as asking what they may want or need, are critically important for every leader. These open lines of communication rein-
force trust and help ease some of the anxiety and fear they may feel during these very uncertain and scary times. As always, e-mail your feedback to SteveAdubato@gmail.com. In this Q&A, he addresses many common oral health and dentistry questions to help keep New Jersey residents informed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why is it important to take care of your oral health during the COVID-19 crisis? First and foremost — with dental offices temporarily closed for routine visits, and most dentists only seeing patients for emergency dental care, the last thing you want right now is a dental problem. Unless you are experiencing a true dental emergency, such as severe pain, swelling, or persistent bleeding, it is very unlikely that you will be able to be seen for less-serious dental problems. Of course, oral health should be a priority all the time. There is a significant connection between oral health and overall wellness. In addition to the obvious things like brushing and flossing, with the limited access to dental care during the COVID-19 healthcare crisis, taking extra steps to minimize the chance of an emergency is more important than ever. Don’t chew on ice cubes or anything hard (think about 18

cutting that apple into slices). Avoid sticky candy (they can rip out fillings and crowns). And keep in mind that the healthier you are, the more successfully you may fight off illnesses in general. It’s in everyone’s best interest to steer clear of any possible infections, which could lower your immunity, and bleeding gums happen because they are infected. If you have bleeding gums due to gingivitis, then your body is launching an inflammatory response. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that your immune system is compromised, you would still be dealing with an infection in your body (your gums). If someone does believe they have a dental emergency, what should they do? If you think you have a true emergency, the first thing you should do is contact your personal dentist. Even if they are not available, they will likely be referring patients to other
sources. On the Delta Dental of New Jersey and Connecticut website, we have posted resources that include a list of Delta Dental-participating dentists who are accepting new emergency patients if your own dentist is unavailable. You don’t have to be a Delta Dental subscriber to access the list, but make sure to ask any dentist you contact if they accept your dental insurance. One caveat – the list isn’t all-inclusive of every dentist who is accepting new emergency patients, but it provides a great starting point for someone in need of emergency assistance when their dentist is unavailable. The dentist will ask questions to verify that it is a true emergency, such as an issue with pain, swelling, or persistent bleeding. They will also ask about your medical history and any other symptoms you might currently be experiencing. In this situation, it’s important that procedures be followed to ensure that the patient, the provider, and the dental team are all kept safe during treatment. What oral health guidance and advice would you give to keep smiles healthy during the pandemic? Especially now – with everyone sheltering in place and unable to participate in a lot of typical, everyday activities – it’s important to keep your normal routines. Have a regular wake-up time, get your exercise in, brush twice a day and make sure you are flossing! It’s also important to pay attention to the cleanliness of the area where your toothbrush is located. Keep the toilet lid closed, especially when flushing. Flushing a toilet with the lid open creates a flume of airborne bacteria that settles within several feet. Breathable toothbrush covers or sleeves that cover the toothbrush head but also allow it to dry out are also a good idea. The important thing is to put some distance between your toothbrush and the toilet – and always make sure your toothbrush is in a place where it can dry out after use. I’ve said it numerous times but remember to floss. If you’re only brushing, then you are only cleaning 60% of the surfaces of your teeth. Flossing cleans the other 40%. When some people initially start flossing, they may see some bleeding and get discouraged. But bleeding means that some inflammation is present and is a sign that your oral health needs improvement. In fact, gingivitis is the most common cause of bleeding gums. When flossing becomes a habit, the bleeding and discomfort will typically lessen over time. If you have any questions about your experience with flossing or other dental issues, you can try contacting your dentist. With so many people stuck at home with their children right now, there are heightened concerns about access to junk food. Any advice? A lot of it comes down to common sense. The same guidance dentists give during normal times is especially important during a pandemic. Sugary snacks should be minimized or enjoyed in moderation. If you are going to have candy, chocolate is best, because it isn’t hard and sticky. The best drink you can give a child is water. While it may be tempting to quiet a child with a bottle of sticky fruit juice, these are high in sugar and can contribute to both child obesity and tooth decay. Remember to talk to your kids about their oral health.
Children also watch what their parents do, and you can include them in watching your brushing and flossing routine. It could be a good time to get them into a daily flossing program as well. Remind them why dental care is important all the time – and especially right now. Are there any oral health products you recommend? Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. A toothbrush with firmer bristles may be helpful for detailing the tires on your car but when it comes to your teeth, a soft brush is best to ensure you aren’t eroding your enamel. When it comes to toothpaste, I buy whatever is on sale. But I always make sure whatever I buy contains fluoride and has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. I recommend avoiding some of the home remedies you see discussed on the Internet, such as charcoal whiteners, which can cause unnecessary abrasion, and oil pulling, which can dry out the mouth and contribute to tooth decay. What can people with dental issues, or other medical issues that may impact their oral health, be doing to protect themselves right now? I encourage everyone to follow best practices for at-home dental care and follow social-distancing guidelines. However, nothing I am recommending should replace the guidance of your personal physician. Make sure to stay in touch with your physician or medical provider throughout this crisis, ask questions and follow their guidance. Delta Dental of New Jersey, Inc. is New Jersey’s leading dental benefits company, providing or administering coverage to more than 1.7 million people through contracts with groups in New Jersey and Connecticut. In Connecticut, Delta Dental of Connecticut, Inc. is a newly licensed insurer that writes dental coverage on an insured basis, and Delta Dental of New Jersey administers self-funded dental benefit programs. Delta Dental of New Jersey is a not-for-profit service corporation and, as a member of Delta Dental Plans Association, is part of a network that provides national dental coverage to more than 73 million people. meadowlandsmedia.com

COVID-19 Response Leaders
Meadowlands area business respond to pandemic with innovation and benevolence To share business strategies and community stories amid the disruptions of COVID-19, Meadowlands Live! | Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Meadowlands Chamber are presenting COVID-19 Response Leaders. Here are some of the innovative ways local organizations are confronting disruption, pivoting business models and stepping up to support our community’s response efforts.
The Meadowlands YMCA: The kids are still coming
F
acing a mandatory shutdown before its third birthday, the Meadowlands YMCA suspended all its membership – but still found its purpose. Normally home to 140 child care participants, the Y transformed its programming to specialize in caring for the children of essential workers and even added a camp for older kids, allowing their parents to continue their work lives despite schools being closed. Additionally, the Y is making its facility available for other civic uses, including running a blood drive for the Red Cross and expanding the work of its Family Success Center to assist with homework labs and other services. The Y is also serving the community outside the facility in various ways, including Weekly Food Distribution with over 75,000 meals delivered to date and counting. Y Online provides many services to connect people to the appropriate agencies and offers suggestions and tips on DIY projects, how to work from home, how to home school your children, home exercise and family activities. Notably, Y Online also allows users to connect to Meadowlands FSC for in-person or zoom homework help and ESL classes.
DMR Architects: Upholding a tradition of excellence
D
Hudson Regional Hospital: A local medical perspective
H
udson Regional Hospital has been a leader in the healthcare response to the COVID-19 crisis. HRH was designated by Hudson County as its COVID-19 testing site, developing a standard-setting process by creating an appointment drive-through testing process at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus. Hudson County residents, first responders and emergency workers with fever, cough and shortness of breath are urged to call 201-388-1097 or 646-8621161 to begin the screening process. Hudson Regional Hospital’s COVID-19 Response Program also includes counseling educators and public officials on reducing the chance of infection, including distributing hand sanitizer and directly educating children and adults at all Secaucus public schools. Hudson Regional Hospital has made great strides since coming under the management of Yan Moshe and Dr. Nizar Kifaieh in January 2018. It was recently named by Castle Connolly Medical as one of the top hospitals in New Jersey and ten of its doctors and departments were on the top doctor list. Its Robotic Surgery program has received accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by Surgical Review Corporation.
MR Architects had more than 125 projects in various stages of design and development when COVID-19 restrictions commenced and continues to support essential construction projects across the state, including hospital and school construction. While many projects have been suspended, the firm’s design personnel continue to advance projects that will be ready to go when business resumes. DMR, the fourth largest architect in the state, has hired three new staff members since the crisis began – some of who have not met their colleagues. To adapt to social distancing requirements, the firm has expanded its already robust remote working capacity with new equipment, software and practices. Twice-weekly virtual department meetings and weekly full staff meeting keep team members connected - and Friday night cocktail parties sustain the firm’s morale while it waits out the crisis. Founder and CEO Lloyd Rosenberg - one of the legendary networkers among New Jersey’s business leaders - is on the phone with contacts from dawn to dusk, keeping abreast of developments and maintaining continuity on existing and prospective projects.

Russo Development & Vermella: Protecting apartment settings and offering virtual services
R
usso Development has added virtual leasing to the Vermella Brand, which encompasses seven apartment communities, to enable leasing activity without person-to-person interaction during the disruption of COVID-19. Prospective residents will find virtual tours, application materials – and they can connect via different tools for virtual tours and conferences to consult with leasing agents and property managers to coordinate leasing and relocation activities.
Andrea Pass Public Relations: Raising brand awareness in the “new normal”
P
ublic relations has always been a vital part of a company’s marketing mix and in today’s climate, it is no different. What is, instead, different, is the method in which to spread the word coupled with the specific message a client looks to disseminate via media coverage. As businesses – especially those in the hard hit tourism and hospitality industry – zig-and-zag in today’s world, third-party media coverage can help increase brand awareness and keep the brand relevant so that customers will remember that business when a “new normal” emerges. Even amid the disruptions posed by COVID-19, Andrea Pass Public Relations continues to help businesses raise their brand awareness through media relations, virtual event planning, crisis communications, thought leadership, cause-related marketing and corporate communications. “It is important not to create a coronavirus pandemic angle when none truly exists. For a hotel that is housing medical teams from other states – yes, there is a story. For a business that once manufactured one type of product and today is producing masks or ventilators – yes, there is a story. For a restaurant that is providing meals to first responders – yes, there is a story,” said Andrea Pass. “Be conscious of the approach. A strong public relations pro will only recommend press outreach to hard news outlets if there is a newsworthy appropriate pitch. Trade publications, targeted demographic podcasts and blogs and various online news sites are always looking for content.”

Notably, it is also a short drive from Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Hackensack Meridian Health, Hackensack University Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health. To better serve the needs of our community, AVE is currently offering special rates for healthcare professionals and first-responders. As of publishing, AVE has immediate availability for 1 and 2 bedroom, flexible-stay furnished apartments. Contact the AVE team by calling (908) 635-1510 or emailing mreinert@aveliving. com to book a furnished apartment. Cleanliness has always been top of mind for AVE’s dedicated team and their residents. But in this climate, they have increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting processes in all high-traffic and high-touch areas to prevent the spread of germs. AVE partners with Ecolab Inc. to provide the highest levels of sanitation in preparing furnished apartments after check-out. After a resident checks out, AVE waits 72 hours before cleaning and disinfecting the residence, which ensures a safe waiting period between stays.

Axiom: Improvising to prepare for resumption
A
xiom, which provides strategic communications services to large real estate interests and institutions - including the Meadowlands Chamber, Hudson Regional Hospital and the Meadowlands YMCA - has been improvising new marketing plans for its clients that address surviving COVID-19 and positioning for the resumption of regular business activity. Axiom offers crisis management as part of its regular service mix for ongoing clients and including 9-11 and Hurricane Sandy - this is the third time that every client on the company’s list was forced to respond to the same crisis. “If we could put our value into perspective, it would be to play this out without internalizing it. Just stay in the moment, assess what’s important, find people to help and people who can help you, and make it work,” says Ron Simoncini. “We are ALL in a huge mess, and it only gets messier if we layer it with regret and disappointment. We are all playing for relevance and market share right now, so there are even worse losses than this if we don’t focus on winning what there is to win and letting the rest go.”
Hackensack Riverkeeper: Protect, preserve, restore
D
uring the COVID-19 Pandemic, water access and ecological rights are more important than ever. Hackensack Riverkeeper is focused on preparing for the near future, when the people of the community can go outside and enjoy the county and state parks again. In preparation for the eventual reopening of their Paddling Centers, they’ve established new protocols to sanitize all boats in between use to keep everyone happy and safe. People in the community are doing their part by self-quarantining to flatten the curve, so Hackensack Riverkeeper wants to be sure the parks are ready to go when the time comes to reintroduce outdoor recreation. Mental health is also a concern during this time of isolation. Hackensack Riverkeeper is making positive strides to ensure people have something to look forward to by providing safe, beautiful places to go when the time is right. The River Cleanup Program has also donated exam gloves and masks (normally used for the high school and middle school water chemistry and clean-up program) to nurses and healthcare professionals struggling to procure necessary supplies to keep them safe.
