For this batch of assignments we were asked to draw a flower and the face of someone who may have written the article and for the final submission we had to put it together as if it was an article published in a newspaper or Magazine, the article blurb was to span two columns and the Illustration to span two columns . This was early in the course before any work needed to be rendered in InDesign. Considering how long it has been since I have sketched or painted anything, I was quite happy with the result!

Illustrations mixed 50’s fair-

The following illustrations were part of an assignment for CATC Schools, these are the submitted files Seidlar House, hosts a fifties fair, this year they were inviting guests to dress up in 50’s apparel

and to bring their pets along too. The first part of the brief required us to illustrate a person and their pet.

The next part was to render an illustration of

Seidlar House.

We were given three photographs, from which we could choose one.

These guys were part of 3 different uses, the first as ‘Mascots’ ie Spot pointing, welcoming and eating.

The welcoming one in the middle was also animated to become a ‘flip book’ as a giveaway to any young children who attend. They were als used in the promotional brochure.

For this brief, we had 6 choices of children’s stories we could illustrate and then design. Firstly the cover pic and then two for with-in the book. We were given a short story that outlined the content. I chose “Shhh! there’s a Monster in Dad’s shed” target audience 4-6 year olds. The story goes: “Once upon a time...as most stories begin, there was once a shed with a monster within. This Monster was different- he was friendly and hairy. With two big brown eyes that were in no way scary. He had wriggly toes and a wide kind smile

that he wore every day for all of the while. There is a story about him moving into Dad’s shed, began witha night that was windy and wet. This big old kind Monster used to live in a tent, but the wind blew it over and over it went! So now our nice Monster had nowhere to sleep, and he roamed all the countryside and heard not a peep. etc”

The KeepCup is the world’s first barista standard reusable coffee cup, designed to replace disposable cups. The love of take-away coffee is costing the environment dearly. Unsatisfied with the alternatives to replace disposable cups, a dedicated brother and sister team designed the KeepCup. The KeepCup is a stylish and practical lidded commuter cup that replicates standard takeaway sizes and fits under the group heads of espresso machines. They have good thermal properties keeping beverages hot 20-30 minutes longer than disposable cups. KeepCups are lightweight, dishwasher safe, microwaveable and splashproof. They have a sealable lid and sipper hole and are pleasing to drink from with the lid on or off.

Thunder Bay- Designer Beer

Diploma, some briefs Brief

This brief was a challenge! We were asked to come up with a television commercial for an Australian made designer beer. The 30 second ad was to be aired during the USA’s Super Bowl.

Once had a boyfriend who became Mr Hyde after drinking beer

First thing we had to do was sketch out some ideas. Started with the obvious, ie thunder down under among other things and after a Un-australian, I know, just do not like beer re-submit and some helpful hints from one of Also, shock/horror not into Football of any my favourite teachers, I tried a different angle. description

Mood Board

This assignment asks us to design a “hero” pattern or motif for ‘Tacci’ an australian Surf wear company. The first submission was to create a mood board. We had a choice of 4 different themes. I chose Botanical. The circular pattern in this photograph (taken by me at Fisherman’s Bay) reminded me of a wave. This plant was growing wild, close to the rocks, and water’s edge.

Motif

In Situ

For this assignment we had to do 3 different package designs for Cucina Colloseo( a ficticious pizza biz) We then had to draw up a template for the pizza box, and show the front, sides and back so that the package would be visible in a supermarket Freezer. The brief described what was needed, ie it was for their signature traditional gourmet Pizza, with tomato basil and mozarella cheese. This Pizza reflects the Italian flag colours of red, white and green. Next was a bonus offering to the company, a paper wrap or something they could use as a promotional gift, I thought a gift bag that would hold a bottle of red to go with the pizza would be nice! What you see here is the in-situ results. Left, a mock up of the bag and below is the pizza box.

With supplied files, this assignment required us to ensure that the photographs supplied were ready for print and then we had to recreate the cover to match a given layout exactly. Not as easy as it looked!

THE NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS

Assignment: Taylor magazine For this assignment, we were told the storyline for an incerpt for ‘Taylor Magazine’. We had to take some photographs of young freelance designer’s who had got together and rented an old warehouse in Melbourne, the idea being creative people working from home on their own lacked a very necessary ingredient, which is bouncing ideas off each other, not being tied down to regular hours, (some of

November 2012

them held employment elsewhere and had only nights to build their businesses, others wished to escape from distractions at home etc.) The photographs had to be taken by the student with any camera that they had on hand and then manipulated in Photoshop so they were ready for print. In other words converted from RGB to CMYK properly.

The

Night Shift

By Alex Landragin (Voyeur Magazine – 119 – June 2011)

Freelancers are counting the benefits of coming together in a shared work space after hours.

Meet the Night Owls.

C

hecking my watch, it’s 9 o’clock on a midweek evening in a quiet backstreet in Richmond, inner Melbourne. Following handwritten signs, I reach a non descript elevator at the entrance to a 100-year-old knitting mill. It delivers me to a cavernous warehouse. Inside, the walls are freshly white washed, but otherwise there’s a sense of transience about the space; it’s mostly empty and there are heating ducts wrapped in aluminium foil hanging limply from windows, still not installed. In a far corner there are a few white folding tables in a row, with about a dozen people hunched over the pale blue screens of their laptops. A few others are milling around, unwrapping Ikea office furniture.

These young professional in their 20s and 30s are part of an emerging work culture that is deliberately and self-consciously reconfiguring conventional wisdom about how work is performed. It’s called ‘coworking’ whereby like-minded professional share a space, working on their own projects in the company of others. More than just an antidote for loneliness, coworking gives young freelancers in the creative and technical sectors a real professional edge. Everyone is here for a slightly different reason for some is a mean to get away from distractions of living in a shared house, for others a way to fight the solitude of working alone. Sometimes it is a choice of just get to meet other people and listen to their stories. Workplaces built around classic office structures tend to be highly centralised. Projects tend to proceed slowly and personality politics are all too common. However, a host of alternative work practices is emerging. The rise of outsourcing, in particular, has allowed more people to go it alone as contractors and freelancers. Some work from home while others hire office space.

For many, freedom from the usual workplace pressures outweighs the income insecurity that comes with freelancing, however, the solitude is a drawback that some might not have considered and may ultimately find impossible to deal with.

There’s evidence that coworking doesn’t just benefit the hosts. A survey of coworkers conducted by Deskmag at the end of 2010 found that 85% of coworkers were more motivated as a result of it, 88% reported better interactions with people and 42% said they were earning more as a result of coworking.

More than just an antidote for loneliness, coworking gives young freelancers in the creative and technical sectors a real professional edge.
