CAMP OUT

AT HOME

S’mores, stargazing, storytelling, & more… it's the perfect time of year to "go camping" right outside your front (or back) door!

by JENNIFER SBRANTI, Founder of HWTM.com

1

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or looking to make an everyday summer evening extra fun, there’s so much creative inspiration that can be drawn from camping… no traveling required! Just grab whatever "camping" gear you have around and set up shop in your yard. Tents and trailers are fun if you want to go all out, but blankets, pillows, and lawn chairs work great too. The most important elements are family, friends and the great outdoors… and the s’mores ingredients, of course! 1. EASY CAMPFIRE CAKE Serving up a creative, camping-inspired cake is easier than you might think… just top your favorite chocolate cake (even a store-bought one) with pirouette cookie “logs” and crushed butterscotch and cinnamon candy “embers”. For the finishing touch, add colorful paper flames. You can find this printable flame on my website at hwtm.com. Glue the flame to a wood skewer, then insert it into the cake. 2. STICK MAN CRAFT Send kids hunting for sticks from around the yard or a nearby park, then set out various craft supplies that they can use to transform their finds into “stick people” or other imaginative creations. Elements like yarn, googly eyes, feathers, washi tape, and stickers are easy to work with and won’t make a big mess!

3. GIVE 'EM S'MORE

It’s hard to beat good ol’ fashioned s’mores – especially when there’s a place for roasting marshmallows nearby! But even if you don’t have a fire pit in your backyard, you can still get your s'mores fix with one of these quick, make-ahead alternatives:

S'mores Munchie Mix For a yummy twist on the popular Muddy Buddies treat, try a s’mores version incorporating Golden Grahams cereal, mini marshmallows, and extra milk chocolate. A variety of recipes can be found online, or visit lmld.org/smores-muddy-buddies for my personal favorite.

S’mores Bites Dip large marshmallows halfway (and generously) into melted milk chocolate, then roll the chocolate-coated part in finely crushed graham cracker crumbs. Place on wax paper to dry.

THE SIMPLE THINGS 4. One of the best things about camping-inspired activities is their simplicity. Stargazing, card games, nature scavenger hunts, and storytelling ‘round the campfire (or with flashlights!) always makes for great fun. If you’re telling stories, don’t forget the popcorn!

MAKE IT A

Party!

FULL BLOWN

bring on the retro charm This darling, vintage trailer (dubbed "Grace" by her owner) serves as both high-impact decor AND a fantastic photo prop! Adorned with retro pink accents both inside and out, Grace is available to rent for parties, events, and photo shoots.

4 Camping themes work great for summer birthday parties, family reunions, and creative baby/bridal showers. There’s no rule that says you have to stick to earth tones, either. Summer is actually the perfect time to bring in the bright colors! If you’re feeling crafty, paint summery colors onto burlap pennant banners, or hot glue colorful feathers and wooden beads onto twine for a festive garland. Metallic stars, fun throw pillows, and paper honeycomb balls are easy ways to bring in sparkle and color. Note: If you need a more boyish or neutral palette for your summer celebration, try vibrant blues and greens mixed with navy, orange, and white.

Did you know that 60% of the recyclable materials collected in the U.S. go to China to be recycled into new products? doll blanket GLENN ANN BAYNE & LAURA VILLEVIELLE are two sisters from Colusa who have designed the ultimate gift for a child. As children, they ran around and played with neighborhood kids, helped their grandmother with small chores, and did all sorts of pre-Pinterest crafts. With Paper Doll Blanket, they hope to inspire simple, old-fashioned fun for today's generation. There’s no app to go with it and it won’t teach your kids to code or build a robot, but it will give them pure, screenfree, unguided play. Paper Doll Blanket started because Glenn Ann made a baby quilt for her niece. She wanted to make a gift that was extra special and interactive. After making the first one, she made a video with her daughter and the video went viral on Facebook to 9 million people. From that amazing exposure, they were able to launch Paper Doll Blanket. The business is based in Yuba City and all products are made in the area.

The doll has the ability to have her clothes and hair accessories changed. It’s a long-term gift, and the outfits that you buy along the way will match your child’s interests as they grow. The quilts are totally customizable and will make any recipient feel special.

ASK FOR HELP FROM ADDICTION TO RECOVERY A Personal Story

My name is Michelle Roberts. I am a single mother of three amazing children. I was raised by my mother and father in a very loving home. Although my parents were somewhat laid back, our family had defined morals and strict rules. I was your average teenager. I occasionally drank and liked to party with friends, but I always knew my limits and never got into too much trouble. My addiction didn't really surface until later in life. I had my first child at 21. When I was 31, I separated from my children's father after a 12 year relationship. At that point, my world began to change drastically. I had a new sense of freedom that I hadn't experienced in quite some time. That's when my drinking started to progress. When the children were with their father, I spent much of my time drinking and enjoying my freedom. About a year later, my father passed away somewhat unexpectedly. My entire world turned upside down. I drank more. And more. And more. If I'm being completely honest, I did my best to stay in a state of oblivion. I had almost total disregard for anything important. My bills were paid, and my children were being cared for, so I saw no issue with my condition. My world had crumbled, so I felt entitled to recklessness. As time passed, my addiction rapidly progressed. I lost custody of my children, and that's when I completely checked out.

My world was very dark. My spirit was drained, and I had become very tired. I felt that I had nothing left to offer. I can't tell you exactly when, or how, or why, but something finally clicked. It was like a bright light had been shone in my eyes. I surrendered. I checked into a 90 day rehabilitation program and started my journey of recovery. I attended 12 step meetings and built a solid foundation of new friends. Many of the women in my life today I've met in recovery. Some of my very best friends are sober and recovering. It may sound bizarre to most, but I am grateful for every day of my life, especially the darkest ones. It had to get as bad as it did for it to become as good as it is! Currently, I have over six years of consecutive sobriety. I have my children full time. I am a productive member of society. And my world is full of light. It's far from perfect, but I'm alive and my children have a healthy mother! My mother passed on New Year’s Eve 2016 and again, my core was rocked. Because of recovery, I was able to deal with her death without numbing out. Losing my mom is the hardest thing I've ever experienced throughout my life. But I walked through it sober, and will continue to do so.

“My world had crumbled, so I felt entitled to recklessness.”

I had no more reasons to be responsible, so I wasn't. This behavior continued for a couple of years, until it got to the point where I was estranged from my entire family, including my children.

If a person needs to use any kind of substance to block out something they don't want to feel, that's a red flag. If

My best advice to those who feel this way is to ask for help. Do not let pride or fear stop you from saving your you think you have a problem, you probably do.

own life. The recovery world is full of amazing, supportive, genuine people who care about you and want to help show you a different way to live. You don't have to live another miserable day. YOUR LIFE MATTERS. I PROMISE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Tell us about yourself.

2018

I was born and raised in Gridley, CA and was very involved with livestock in 4-H and FFA throughout my youth. My wife and I have four children: Colton, Piper, Jaxon, and Kendall. Our family is actively involved in production agriculture and operate Dillabo Livestock, where we run 150 head of cattle in Sutter County. Our children are involved in sports, cheerleading, 4-H and FFA and keep us very busy!

august 2-5

What prior fair experience do you have? I have been professionally employed in the California Fair business for the past 15 years. For the past 2 years, I worked at the California Department of Food & Agriculture, Fairs & Expositions Branch as the Training Coordinator and Ag Program Supervisor. Prior to that I was the CEO of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair in Tulelake, CA for 10 years and the Facility Supervisor at the Merced County Spring Fair for 3 years.

What are you looking forward to most about being involved in the Y-S fair?

DAVE DILLABO CEO, Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds

10 ME A N D M I N E M AG A ZI NE | S UM M ER 2018

I have a passion for the fair industry and am very excited about the opportunity to manage the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors, fair staff, volunteers, and the local community to connect the fairgrounds to the community it represents and promote a vibrant, constructive culture throughout the fairgrounds!

What are some of your goals? I would like to enhance the use of the fairgrounds throughout the entire year as an event center for all event needs by focusing on facility improvements, customer service, and widespread marketing of the facility. Another goal of mine is to promote the numerous services and resources that the fairgrounds has available, as well as the value of serving as an emergency center for the community during a crisis. For the annual fair, my goals are to ensure that it is a celebration that reflects the communities it serves and represents. To that end, I would like to increase the attendance at the annual fair through diversification and quality of entertainment and exhibits, public safety awareness, and affordable rates. I also will aim to promote the fair as a safe and family-oriented event, one that creates opportunities for people to enjoy spending time together while making lifelong memories.

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS YEAR'S FAIR? This year the Yuba-Sutter Fair will be celebrating its 160th Anniversary! That ranks in the top 10 of the oldest fairs in California. This is a very special accomplishment that is due to the numerous efforts of past board of directors, fair staff, and the local community for supporting the Yuba-Sutter Fair over the past 160 years! We have many special exhibits and promotions planned to celebrate this year’s historic annual fair.

leadership Many of you have heard about our local 4-H clubs. You might link 4-H with your county fair and raising animals for auction, but that is only one component of this amazing program for our youth. Our local 4-H clubs are working with our youth to teach responsibility and what it means to be a leader. They educate them on parliamentary procedure, along with the job duties that a leadership position holds.

A group of our local youth has set a goal of attending the Leadership Washington Focus (LWF). It's a National 4-H leadership

conference for youth ages 12-14. This experience will give them the opportunity to exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other 4-H’ers from across the nation. This educational adventure will include a tour of our nation’s Capital and a conference that emphasizes life-changing leadership skills. Some of the program goals include building confidence, learning effective communication skills in a group discussion and public speaking, working with others to create and accomplish goals, and developing and understand their personal leadership style.

Of course this trip requires funding, so these young ladies and gentlemen are looking for their community’s support. Please look for their upcoming fundraising events. Also, if you would like to help the group as a whole, or sponsor an individual, you can send a check to the county 4-H office. Please consider supporting this group of

Elements of a Steampunk-Moulin Rouge Wedding with a 7,000 Pound Fire-Breathing Dragon at the World’s Smallest Mountain Range SOUTHRIDGE ESTATES , Sutter

Rob and Dahni Shaw’s whimsical, colorful wedding was held at the Southridge Estates Venue located in a canyon below the tallest peak in the Sutter Buttes. The property is enhanced by the stunning landscape, breathtaking views, and the amazing natural topography of the dormant volcano, which erupted 1.6 million years ago. Southridge was chosen as the venue because of its elegance and versatility. Inside, it can accommodate 500 people and features a grand ballroom, banquet and ceremony room, and blue room bar. For the wedding, the couple utilized the large outdoor patio that overlooks private ponds and views of South Butte. Rob and Dahni live in Los Angeles, where they both work in the music industry. Dahni was raised locally, graduating from the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts (MCAA).

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: The whole scene at the wedding was like a colorful boho dream; a little Victorian, a little Moulin Rouge, and a little Steampunk – which is an artistic style merging science fiction, technology and Victorian elements. (The giant, metal, fire-breathing dragon was about as "steampunk" as it gets!) This eclectic theme was dreamed up by the creative minds of Dahni and her mom, Linda. The couple was married under a copper pipe gazebo, custom-made by Dahni’s father to fit the wedding theme.

The bridal party’s stunning, handmade “Nouveau” jeweled head-pieces and steampunk style boutonnieres were designed by local artist, Kymi Manley. Gorgeous hair and makeup by the stylists at Rockabetty’s Hair Salon in Yuba City also matched the wedding theme flawlessly.

1. For the ceremony, the bride wore a vintage 1970s bridal gown by award winning designer Jessica McClintock.

2. The wedding was beautifully styled by Kevin DeHoff (owner of Country Florist), who combined lush blooms, jewel toned fabrics, and eclectic vintage store finds. 3. Claude – the 7,000 pound metal sculpture of a fire-breathing, 10-foot tall dragon with a 19-ft wing span – delighted the guests after landing at Southridge on the wedding day. Northern California artist Gabe Zanotto is the creator of this piece.

4. Groomsmen sported suits with a Victorian/Steampunk style. The groom wore a dark blue suit and a surprise patterned vest – which could be really admired once the suit jacket was off.

5 Rob’s parents – Stephen and Loretta Shaw – officiated the ceremony and weaved in humor and stories about the couple’s love affair. Rob & Dahni—both musicians—selected ALL of the ceremony music, including “Elephant Love Medley” from Moulin Rouge and “Beautiful Surprise” for the processional. Bhangra dancers from the Punjabi American Heritage Society escorted the bride and groom to the reception area and also performed for the guests. Dahni’s dad, Kenny Trujillo, and his band-mates from Uno Mundo, Brian Nakagawa, Kevin Putnam and Sam Jellsey, rocked this fun-loving reception. Guests enjoyed a buffet dinner of South Indian food and North Indian Tandoori dishes provded by Bombay Lounge in Yuba City. Before the ceremony, they were also treated to a feast of Mediterranean appetizers by Hillcrest Catering of Yuba City.

6

Artist Jennifer Young, owner of Moon Majick Creations, created beautiful henna designs on the hands and arms of guests at the wedding. The beautiful cinematic wedding photos were taken by Talia Baxter of Portraits by Talia, who is also Dahni’s high school friend from MCAA. And, in the same cinematic style, a video which will be shared on Facebook soon was shot by Eric and Stephany Jordan, owners of Marcomm Media. See their work at marcommmedia.com.

5. MUSIC Music during the ceremony was performed by Dahni’s fellow cast members at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Studios, L.A. Uno Mundo (the father of the bride's band) kept the reception lively. Rob joined in, too!

6. COLOR PARTY Bridesmaids wore colorful, floral dresses fitting the wedding’s theme, but reflecting each girl’s individual tastes. The stunning floral bouquets were created by Kevin DeHoff, Country Florist.

7. WARDROBE CHANGE Dahni arrived at the reception in a 2nd dress, a beautiful floor-length tulle gown with a jeweled corset from The Collective Bride in Yuba City.

UNWIND WITH

Yoga & Wine by ELIZABETH SMITH

I created “Happy Hour Yoga” with the intention to support local businesses and bring people to yoga who had never tried it before. As a yogi, I understand that taking a yoga class can seem overwhelming. I originally chose not to take a class for two reasons: it was not popular in our community at the time and it looked very difficult. I eventually turned to yoga as an alternative to medicine. After my very first class, I immediately decided to start teaching. I bought a book and taught the next day in my living room with anyone who would practice with me. I began teaching after hours in local businesses, at the park, and in friends’ backyards. Once I became certified I started teaching in gyms, our local yoga studio, and at private parties.

PureJoy. I’ve been to a few wine and yoga events where they do the yoga then the wine. I thought it would be fun to do both at the same time, and it works very well! 50% of the clientele at Happy Hour Yoga have NEVER done yoga before because it seemed too intimidating.

But once you add wine, it seems more playful and fun. The classes are geared toward beginners, but can accommodate all levels of yoga experience.

"It makes my heart so full to hear people laughing & practicing self-care."

I am all about collaborations, community involvement, and coordinating events, so I decided to partner with local businesses to offer Yoga and Wine. The idea was that it would make yoga seem less intimidating to people who had never taken a class, would be a fun change for yogis who wanted to have some fun, and would support our local businesses.

Currently, the Wine Down Wednesday classes are the last Wednesday of the month at a location in the area, which changes every month. We also do a class 2x a month at Munger Winery called Sunset Yoga. We practice in the grass under a big beautiful weeping willow while listening to nature, feeling the air on our skin, and enjoying a nice peaceful evening. The next Sunset Yoga class will be July 19. Doors open at 6:30, class starts at 7pm. There are a few mats to loan, or you can bring your own.

The class includes one glass of wine (or beer at certain locations) and a yoga class. My good friend Jesi Young owns PureJoy, and has donated a one month pass at each and every event. I also offer schedules and free passes to

For more information on when the classes will be, please “like” Happy Hour Yoga on Facebook.
