ampus Estate Management magazine would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. This issue’s Product & Industry News section (starting on page 6) showcases the latest news from the industry. Our cover story this month is from the Association of University Directors of Estates’ (AUDE) Chair Trevor Humphreys, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Surrey, discusses AUDE’s recent Big Conversation event and the challenges and opportunities facing the HE sector in 2017 (see page 2). Next, Airwave recognise that the demands of a campus can’t be satisfied by a single technological solution, but instead a sophisticated and extensive network of integrated technologies (see page 20). Elsewhere, global higher education (HE) is a $3 trillion-per year market that is expected to grow at 9% annually for the next five years. The traditional student-lecturer relationship is changing, and over the coming years, nine megatrends will disrupt the market and HE as we know it (see page 24). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the worlds ‘to do’ list for the next thirteen years. Each of the Global Goals is extraordinarily important, and taken together, present us in education with a potent agenda of unprecedented scope and significance (see page 28). Fit out contractor Overbury and Architecture PLB’s interior design team have transformed a central London library into a flexible and contemporary student hub (see page 32). Finally, Altro resin flooring is providing the ultimate in colour, flexibility and durability on an award-winning, £10 million refurbished campus at North Hertfordshire College, in Hitchin (see page 36). FRONT COVER STORY

The big conversation

Brexit for the higher education

A

ssociation of University Directors of Estates’ (AUDE) Chair Trevor Humphreys, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Surrey, discusses AUDE’s recent Big Conversation event and the challenges and opportunities facing the HE sector in 2017. In January we hosted our annual AUDE Big Conversation series. The event provided members the opportunity to discuss, debate and exchange views on the hottest topics in higher education. Over 70 delegates attended the event held at the London School of Economics. The attendees included a mix of AUDE members, suppliers and industry experts from the sector. Delegates were welcomed by host Simon Fanshawe, co-founder and partner of Diversity by Design. The day kicked off with Professor Sir Ian Diamond, Principal and ViceChancellor of the University of Aberdeen, exploring the key events in higher education over the decades and hypothesising about the future of HE beyond Brexit and the HE White Paper. Sir Ian discussed on the current challenges facing the higher education sector and how estates can respond through innovation and providing world class facilities. The key focus for the Big Conversation, explored the challenges and opportunities of

2

Brexit. Brexit is set to affect the sector considerably, but its impact is yet to be determined. Undoubtedly, our student demographic, our workforce, our costs, as well as research funding will all be impacted. According to the European University Association, the UK has the largest number of participants in the EU’s research programme and is currently the biggest destination for European students heading to study abroad. Across the sector we are seeing a downward trend in applications from EU students to study in the UK. This is worrying as the continued expansion of UKHE and investment in the estate is somewhat dependent on fee income generated from these students. It would appear that Brexit is already having an impact, but the ability to continue to access European funding for research is a key concern for the higher education sector and for politicians. Additionally, the expansion of UK universities and investment in campuses is largely dependent on continued access to these students, so with Brexit on the horizon it will be interesting to see how this affects international links. It may be prudent for universities to focus on the appropriate structure to maintain their credentials as European universities in the lead up to this change. A large proportion of academic

and support staff originate from the EU and their ability to remain in the UK post Brexit remains uncertain. Changes in how EU citizens can choose to live and work in the UK will have a significant impact across HEI’s, where there are many staff working in estates and facilities and working for contractors too. A skills shortage in the construction industry is already well known and many of the existing workforce are EU migrants. To cut this supply off or to severely restrict the supply could have damaging effect on contractor’s ability to deliver projects together with upward pressure on tender prices. However, with challenges comes new opportunities. Peter Aitchison, director of communications and public affairs at the University of Glasgow, advised directors of estates to keep calm, manage risks and look for wins, commenting that the higher education industry is a vital driver of the economy. Andrew Burgess, deputy chief operating officer at Loughborough University, asked us to consider the influence higher education institutions and estates have over the situation we now find ourselves in, highlighting the need to utilise our network and consider how we move forward whilst avoiding complacency. Universities now must look beyond Brexit for new markets as it’ll be crucial to ensure the learning g

and teaching environments are fit for purpose, that staff are flexible and have strong values, that courses focus on co-curricular and employability, that students are given choice, that research will be impactful and interface more with industry and that University’s maintain the confidence of their communities. The Government White Paper encourages competition so it’s more important than ever that we create an enticing environment for all EU students to live, learn and grow. AUDE recently published some excellent examples of how estates directors are leading the way on this agenda and we are seeing

4

Winter 2017

some great examples of universities working more closely with business and communities to drive local and regional economic growth. However, we would do well to look at the very challenging HE funding environment in Scotland and Wales where cuts have been faster and deeper. Estate directors have had to work incredibly hard to work within extremely challenging recurrent and capital budgets. In England we may well be facing similar challenges in 2017 and beyond and we must work harder at exploring solutions that colleagues have developed at their respective institutions.

Campus Estate Management

Undoubtedly the future remains challenging and there is a need for universities to continue to control costs and drive efficiency in their operations. Universities continue to be more business-focused, working with their local and regional partners to secure both their economic future and that of the wider region. 2017 will be an interesting year in defining the future of higher education; AUDE will continue to support and promote excellence within the sector. n For further information please visit www.aude.ac.uk

Colourful panels add the finishing touches to new South Yorkshire School

Sheffield-based architectural panel manufacturer Panel Systems has played its part in ensuring that pupils at the new Goldthorpe Primary School receive an inspiring and enlightening educational journey, thanks to the colourful Trespa panels it fabricated and supplied. Panel Systems supplied 80m2 of Trespa panels in six bright colours: Passion Red, Red Orange, Zinc Yellow, Lime Green, Poplar Blur and Royal Blue to create a unique rainbow design. The panels were 3mm thick and Panel Systems bonded them to a Styrofoam core, providing a high level of insulation for the building, enhancing its energy efficiency and meeting the architect’s specification for thermal performance. Panel Systems manufactured the panels for the whole façade of the main school building, supplying the site on call-off and cutting each of the panels to exact sizes using its extensive CNC machining facilities. The new £1.3 million primary school was built by contractor Robertson Construction and opened in September, as part of an ongoing regeneration programme for Goldthorpe. It is located at a new site close to the original school building, which was built in 1912 and caters for 310 pupils and 26 in nursery. Trespa panels are ideal for school building applications as they have a scratch and impact resistant surface that is extremely robust and has been manufactured to withstand harsh exterior elements such as UV light and wind driven rain. Trespa architectural panels are available in a wide choice of standard colours including wood and metal effects and they can also be manufactured in custom-made colours for bespoke projects. Danny Phelan, Sales Manager for Panel Systems, said: “Trespa panels were perfect on this project as they offer a fantastic range of colour options that create bright attractive learning spaces. These panels are the epitome of a contemporary, forward-looking educational building and will hopefully inspire pupils for years to come!”

University awarded for commitment to sustainability Independent auditors have awarded Nottingham Trent University a gold award for sustainability – making it the only University in the country to receive the honour. Auditors for The Learning in Future Environments (LiFE) Index carried out a thorough inspection across all aspects of university life, including teaching, research, waste management and transport. Awards are presented to educational institutions that meet high sustainability standards set by the LiFE index, which is run by The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC). The result comes two years ahead of the University’s goal to achieve gold rating by 2018/19. Auditors were impressed with the progress made to embed sustainability within the curriculum. As part of the ongoing curriculum refresh, every taught course will include sustainability content relevant to their subject area. University researchers on the city’s Remourban Project were recognised for their commitment to sustainable research. The joint-EU project includes researchers from the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment who are looking at sustainable buildings and transport systems and how they can improve the city of Nottingham. Auditors praised the ‘greening the city’ project, which created two new green spaces for students and staff on campus, with a further eight spaces planned for the future. Other areas recognised included the carbon neutral Pavilion

building on Clifton campus, and the work of more than 1,000 volunteers on 700 community projects across Nottinghamshire. Future regeneration of the University’s campuses will be built with sustainable principles and future planning in mind. The Index has also paved the way for the University to be shortlisted four times in the Green Gown Awards 2016, and is part of a string of recent awards including achieving fourth place in the 2015 People & Planet University League. Grant Anderson, Environment Manager at Nottingham Trent University, said: “We continue to be one of the most sustainable universities in the world – our target was to hit gold by 2018/19, so we are delighted to do this two years early. We now hope other leading sustainable universities will take up the challenge of the LiFE index.” n

New membership platform for campus universities highlighted at parking trade association’s Annual Conference “It has been an outstanding year for The International Parking Community (IPC) with membership continuing to grow under our new and more expansive identity, new partnerships forged with key organisations and a host of new initiatives underway.” Speaking to the large audience at The IPC’s 2016 Annual Conference, Will Hurley, Director of the Trade Association, said he was particularly excited that public sector organisations and major centres of education would now have access to the progressive benefits that have proved to be so effective for private sector parking service providers. “We’ve taken a proactive stance in many areas over the past 12 months and are now helping to foster a convergence of parking standards across the public and private sectors - to help improve service provision for motorists while recognising the distinct requirements and regulations for different types of parking facility,” continued Mr Hurley. “For example, we continue to welcome members to our dedicated new membership platform for campus and city centre universities which is focussed on the specific challenges and issues resulting from finite and limited parking facilities for staff, students, contractors and visitors. The first education sector conference was held last summer and the success in this area is building on the dynamic approach and the positive results of similar membership platforms for local authorities and major centres of healthcare. “In other areas, we’ve provided detailed feedback to the DCLG’s consultation paper, incorporated the Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s new Code of Practice into our own Code and we continue to work closely with the DVLA to ensure ongoing improvements in parking provision and practices. We’ve also established a productive and ongoing partnership with the Citizens Advice Service, secured accreditation under the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) regulations and were praised by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) during the annual audit.” The International Parking Community (IPC) is an Accredited Trade Association that was set up in 2013 to provide greater clarity and improved standards for protecting the interests of landowners, car park operators and motorists alike and to reduce the incidence of unfair parking practices and unlawful parking charges. The initial focus of the organisation has been to provide operators of car parks on private land with clear legal guidance, to encourage unprecedented service improvements and to provide easy access to a comprehensive, responsive, efficient and independent appeals process. “We’ve made a lot of progress in a short time,” continued Mr Hurley. “But we’re constantly listening to members, lobbying and looking to see where further improvements can be made to improve the parking experience of motorists and ensure high service standards are applied right across the parking industry. Other speakers at the Conference, which was held at Hallmark’s Mickleover Court Hotel near Derby, included

Art Deco town hall set for university transformation Broadway Malyan has been commissioned to breathe new life into an east London town hall as part of Coventry University’s ambitious expansion plans. The practice will substantially refurbish the stunning grade II listed Civic Centre in Dagenham to create Coventry University Group’s newest campus, CU London, which will cater for up to 3,000 students. The Art Deco building was originally designed by Architect E. Berry Webber and constructed in 1936 as part of a major civic development programme in London during the inter-war years. The building is built in Mulberry brick but boasts a Portland stone portico with four slim columns leading into a dramatic three storey entrance hall which includes marble columns, two staircases and art deco ceiling paintings. The building underwent significant restoration in 2003 to restore much of its original stonework and paint colours and the latest project will protect and enhance many of the building’s key aspects including its dramatic entrance hall and atrium and council chamber. Work on the project is set to begin this month after it was approved by planners, and Broadway Malyan director Ben Somner, who is leading the project, said the scheme was unique in the higher education sector. He said: “Coventry University’s vision for this facility is to challenge conventional thinking around the organisation of study so our approach has been to combine the latest in pedagogic thinking while also creating a campus that is outward facing and open to use by the local community. “A substantial element of the project will be to remodel and refurbish the former council offices in the building’s two wings to create a series of high quality learning spaces which benefit from fantastic views across the site’s landscaped grounds and the adjacent Central Park. “We will also be creating a new café for both university and community use as well as introducing a new learning resource centre that will incorporate the existing council chamber, which will continue to be used by the local authority for meetings in the future. “This building is a beautiful example of the architecture of its time and the attention to detail within the three-storey entrance hall particularly is breathtaking and we are excited to have the opportunity to be part of a project that will ensure the long term future of this historically important building.” Based upon a high-quality and low-cost career focused

model of higher education pioneered by the University through its CU Coventry model, CU London will offer lower fees, lower entry requirements and more flexible learning options. John Dishman, chief executive officer and director of CU Coventry, added: “This is a key project for the Coventry University Group and we are working closely with Barking and Dagenham Council to create a facility that not only protects the future of this fantastic building but supports their growth aspirations. “It will also enable local people to access a more affordable and flexible further education.”

Marino Institute of Education Net2 Provides a Secure Integrated Solution with Student Enrolment for Marino Marino Institute of Education is a unique third-level education environment based in Dublin. The campus comprises the College of Education, the Conference Centre and other continuing professional development and support services. Requirements Martin Lynch, IT Manager at Marino, made the decision to develop the site’s existing system in order to better control the movement of staff and students around the campus. Due to the open nature of the college, there was also a potential issue with unauthorised personnel gaining access to restricted areas of the campus that needed to be resolved. Integration with the college’s in-house management software was also required, to simplify student management and enable the tokens to be used to gain access to the campus, as a student ID card, for library usage, and photocopy and print services. Solution The new solution, installed by ATA Security Ltd, builds on Marino’s existing Net2 system that has been steadily expanded across the site over the past ten years. The system now combines the entire range of Paxton’s Net2 products; Net2, Net2 Entry and Net2 PaxLock. Net2 is a user-friendly and flexible networked access control system, designed to make the management of any site straightforward. Combined with Net2 Entry, Paxton’s award winning door entry system, and Net2 PaxLock, which provides a wireless access control solution in a slim-line door handle, the new Net2 system has significantly improved the security at Marino, whilst providing a simple interface from which to manage the site and users. Declan Shields, Operations Manager at ATA, says: “We are big fans of Paxton products, Net2 is the only access control system we use. It’s easy to install, and simple to manage, plus the Paxton team provide excellent support every step of the way. This, and the flexible, scalable nature of the Net2 system, is what

made it the ideal solution for Marino.” The integration with the college’s in-house student management software makes it simple for the college to manage the access rights of everyone on campus, and ensure that the students can utilise all other services and amenities offered at the college. Additional integrations with the intruder and fire alarms also give staff a greater degree of control over the students’ movement, preventing them from inadvertently entering an area that has been closed down during ‘out of hours’ periods. Result The staff and students have gotten on board with their updated Net2 system very quickly. Martin says of the software: “Net2 is very, very easy to use. I felt at home with it really quickly, and discovered a range of additional features that we will benefit from.” The college has plans to further expand the system, with the imminent implementation of a further seven new Net2 PaxLocks, as well as increased access control in the library, and electric gates to control the flow of people into, and out of, the main grounds. n

University of Glasgow selects intelligent telematics for 3G vehicle camera solution University of Glasgow has chosen Intelligent Telematics to provide a 3G vehicle camera solution for its fleet operation to target insurance savings and encourage responsible driving. Intelligent Telematics’ industry-leading IT1000 device will initially be installed on 25 vans before being rolled out across a further 87 fleet vehicles made up predominantly of cars and minibuses. The University selected the IT1000 cameras following a detailed review of 3G and SD card devices in the marketplace. “The IT1000 is clearly the standout solution that provides us with the complete package that meets our precise fleet requirements,” explained Ronald Ford, Transport Services Manager at University of Glasgow. “Over the past 12 months we have road-tested five other vehicle cameras, but all demonstrated one issue or another in terms of video quality, poor GPS or inadequate connectivity.” The IT1000 will be used to capture video evidence to prove liability in the event of a collision involving one of the fleet vehicles. This will help not only reduce insurance premiums moving forward, but also speed up the claims process to reduce the administrative burden on the University’s internal resources. Previously, disputes have become incredibly time consuming, even when only a minor bump or scrape, so the 3G cameras will now allow the office-based transport team to determine fault within minutes of an incident occurring. Meanwhile, the transport team will monitor video footage to

18 Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

ensure vehicles are being driven responsibly in line with the University of Glasgow’s safety and duty of care commitment. With an approved driving register of more than 1,000 members of staff and students, the 3G vehicle camera solution will be used to investigate all collisions and review the status of those involved. This will enable the University to better manage the authorisation process and encourage improved driver behaviour. Justin White, Managing Director at Intelligent Telematics commented: “The IT1000 is the only 3G camera to carry the E1 mark of approval for the aftermarket installation to European manufactured vehicles. Manufactured in Germany and using O2 Telefonica SIM cards, the device possesses the highest available levels of reliability, HD video and 3G connectivity. Our unrivalled commitment to quality is making Intelligent Telematics the partner of choice for a growing number of vehicle operators in the UK, mainland Europe and worldwide.” Intelligent Telematics’ IT1000 is the most sophisticated 3G vehicle camera solution currently available with unrivalled accuracy and technology. The forward-facing device transmits footage of accidents and near misses via a secure 3G private network supported by Telefonica/02 to a web-based interface with live email and SMS alerts, so a triggered event can be viewed almost immediately. n

TECHNOLOGY

Ahead of the game Top of the class with Airwave’s technology portfolio

T

echnology is everywhere we look, interwoven in almost every facet of our lives. If affects how we communicate, how we shop, how we spend our leisure time and crucially, how we learn and absorb information. Today’s generation of students have grown up with the Internet, tablets, WiFi and smartphones – they are hungry, unrelenting users of technology. Airwave understand that in order to provide students with a dynamic and rewarding learning experience, technology has become a prerequisite – not just in the classroom, but in halls of residence and bedrooms across the country. Airwave recognise that the demands of a campus can’t be satisfied by a single technological solution, but instead a sophisticated and extensive

20

network of integrated technologies. From smart TVs in bedrooms to interactive screens in classrooms, Airwave can provide a full portfolio of products and solutions to satisfy the demands of the next generation of Doctors, Lawyers and Teachers. International Channels and Movies on Demand Airwave also understand that not all students can be catered for by an off the shelf solution. As an example, recognising the

Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

significantly increasing numbers of Chinese students in the UK (by far the largest demographic outside the UK at 90,000+), Airwave can offer several key Chinese Channels, including Hunan TV, Dragon TV, Guangdong TV and DaFish Drama. Other channels included in Airwave’s portfolio include Sky, Alaraby, CNN and Russia Today. For a real wow factor, Airwave and sister company Techlive International have developed

“Airtime”, a cloud-based video on demand system that removes the capital expense of installation for the host. Airtime is available as an app that can be simply and quickly installed on a smart TV, providing movies and TV shows before major consumer streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. Interactive & Smart Television Away from home and dealing with the stress of exams, schedules and a different environment, a student’s downtime is hugely important and those used to large-screen smart TVs at home, will expect the same in their university bedroom and lounge. Complicating matters, televisions within halls of residence need to take into consideration seemingly trivial matters like noise pollution (all of Airwave’s commercial TVs feature volume limitation technology) whilst also needing to satisfy more rigorous requirements such as screen-sharing (THE big future focus) or the ability for students to communicate with their teachers via their television. Airwave’s portfolio of smart, standalone and interactive TVs cater for a number of differing requirements and budgets, the

design of information and content channels is also possible via a large in-house technical team. In the classroom, Airwave’s range of interactive screens allow teachers and professors to take visual learning to the next level, enabling students to interact and engage with the content presented. WiFi As technology evolves, so does a student’s expectation and thirst for constant connection to a rapidly growing number of portable devices. Whether it be the classroom, bedroom or even public

areas, the provision of a fast, secure, reliable and robust WiFi service is perhaps THE priority when looking to provide students with an enriching and enjoyable University experience Airwave are experts in the provision and installation of WiFi systems and have a state-of-the-art cloud based solution, backed up by an extensive team of technicians ensuring a speedy and uninterrupted service. Digital Signage Digital Signage is revolutionising the way educational facilities communicate, allowing colleges and universities to reach both students and staff with up to date messages and information at the click of a button. Intelligent scheduling software enables the customisation of the most complicated of timetables and crucially, saves significant time and resource whilst providing students with engaging, relevant content. Airwave’s digital signage team offer a consultative approach ahead of recommending a signage system suitable for all budgets. For detailed, bespoke requirements, the inhouse design team can also create individually tailored content. IconInc – Luxurious Student Living IconInc offers much more than just

HIGHER EDUCATION

Students of Tomorrow

The future of higher education: Transforming the students of tomorrow

G

lobal higher education (HE) is a $3 trillion-per-year market hat is expected to grow at 9% annually over the next five years. The traditional student-lecturer relationship is changing, and over the coming years, nine megatrends will disrupt the market and HE as we know it. he nature of jobs is changing, and students need to be able to update their skills during their careers Employees are changing jobs more frequently. At the same time, some of today’s jobs are under threat. HE providers can take three actions to emphasize the importance of students’ employability. First and foremost, universities should develop their students into lifelong learners with the ability to “self-reskill” and renew their knowledge bases regularly. Second, they should equip students with

24

wider sets of skills across disciplines. In the US, such a system already exists with majors and minors, and interdisciplinarity is also increasingly common in the UK and South Korea, through “fusion majors”, for example. Third, universities should seek to update their curricula in a timely manner if new industry trends are observed. Fourth, HE providers should actively foster an entrepreneurial mindset in students to build their independence, resilience and proactiveness. Demand for continuous education and corporate training is growing Similarly, the rapidly changing career patterns described earlier are driving the growing importance of continuous education and corporate training. Companies are increasingly addressing

Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

their skills gaps by training existing staff. In addition, the growing frequency of job and career changes is driving up demand for short practical courses. Part of this demand will be satisfied through e-learning, which is particularly prominent, and blended learning. HE faces serious capacity issues in dealing with the global increase in student numbers Population growth will be a key challenge for the HE sector. By 2035, 520 million students are expected to be enrolled in higher education worldwide, growing more than five-fold from around 100 million in 2000. To put it into context, the OECD Education Director mentioned that China is constructing one university per week to address increased demand, and

other sources also highlight the need for universities to be constructed at a rapid rate to support growth in HE demand. Competition to attract the best students is increasing Attracting the best students is important because of university branding and image, and as many universities strive to be the best, one key component of this is the caliber of their students. However, attracting the best students is increasingly difficult. Student mobility is rising – the number of international students is expected to grow from 4.5 million to around 7.5 million by 2025. Universities are now competing on a regional and often even global scale to attract the best students. Students often select what country they wish to study in before choosing the institution. In addition, a number of newer players across the globe are using completely new approaches and gaining wide international recognition, increasing competition with existing traditional players. Public funding is decreasing as a share of revenue

Public funding for universities is declining, in general, while costs are rising – in both absolute and relative terms. Revenue through tuition fees is increasing, driven by both increased student fees and higher student numbers. However, this will not be enough to cover the steep decline in public funding. This has induced some universities to turn to innovative funding models, such as the public private partnership model (PPP), to leverage private funds to finance one-off projects or ongoing programs. In 2015, education was the most active sector in terms of PPPs in Europe by number of deals, and the third largest in value terms. PPPs hold multiple advantages for universities, enabling faster development through easier access to (non-debt) capital, as well as opportunities to improve ties to industry. Research funding is increasingly skewed towards the top universities The HE institutions with the “best” research quality are receiving a growing proportion of research funding, while others increasingly lose out with both public and industry funding. Research strength, aside from attracting more

funding, also builds international recognition and prestige, which has many collateral benefits, such as attracting top teaching staff, other top researchers, and the brightest students. Digitalized learning environments are becoming the norm Students increasingly expect strong digital infrastructure, and this is becoming a larger part of their learning and university experience. This trend manifests itself in a number of ways. First, the “basics” of high-speed internet on campus, along with an online platform on which students can check grades and obtain and submit assignments, will soon be the norm. All reading materials will be digitalized, which already represents around 35% of UK publishing revenues, for example. Second, the future learning experience will be considerably enriched by digital devices, such as OLED32-based foldable lightweight displays for note taking and multi-touch LED screens for support in class group exercises. Third, virtual experiments and field trips through augmented reality will become widespread. As part of the former, students can undertake g experiments in a safe environment

Campus Estate Management

Winter 2017 25

and at a low cost, although virtual experiments are unlikely to fully replace the need for “real” experiments. Fourth, robots will increasingly support both lecturers and students. While it is unlikely that robots will fully replace lecturers, a wide uptake of robots as teaching support is nonetheless expected, as prices decrease and as robots become more socially acceptable. Blended learning is becoming the main way of learning The blended learning/smart education market, i.e. a mix of traditional learning methods with digital learning methods and technology, is expected to grow by almost 25% per year, reaching $447 billion by 2020, and include education products, applications, and learning modes. As part of blended learning approaches, students increasingly build their knowledge outside the

26

traditional lecture-theater and seminar-room environment, e.g. through online research and exercises. Lecture theaters and seminar rooms are, in fact, becoming a place to work together and discuss concepts and ideas with peers, and to get guidance from the faculty. One such increasingly common learning method is often referred to as a “flipped classroom”. This approach is sometimes combined with gamification concepts. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are also increasingly used in blended learning, as some HE providers are starting to integrate MOOCs with physical exams and certificates. MOOCs were only introduced in 2011 but have since experienced strong growth, with around 4,000 MOOCs now being offered. Collaborations between universities are growing, but increasingly selective The number of research and teaching collaborations will continue to grow. One-third of all academic research

Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

is now conducted jointly through international collaborations. Teaching collaborations are also growing, comprising exchange semesters, dual degrees and partnerships on branch campuses. The main motivations for setting up such additional teaching collaborations are to broaden the education offerings, enhance the international profile and visibility, and strengthen research collaborations. Conclusions The global HE landscape is changing rapidly as a result of the nine megatrends outlined in this report. The playing field is shifting due to increasingly demanding students, financial pressures and growing competition. HE providers need to act now to succeed in the rapidly changing, approximately $3 trillion p.a. global HE market or risk being left behind. n For more information visit www. adl.com

e celebrate education having its own dedicated Goal (No 4) but that is only the start of it. The 2017 EAUC Annual Conference theme Global Goals: Local Action recognises the critical role universities and colleges across the planet have to play in finding and implementing solutions to climate change and realising the SDG’s on a local level within their communities and beyond. The big challenge to deliver measurable and effective solutions to climate change often falls to the Estates Department and this conference will give delegates the tools and resources that they need to respond to this task. The packed conference will take place on 28–30 March at Lancaster University and will be filled with insight and ideas aimed at delegates from every area of campus life from the further and higher education sector. Headlining the agenda, we have a number of inspiring keynote sessions which will take place during the main conference on Wednesday 29 – Thursday 30 March 2017. We will welcome Maria Adebowale - Schwarte, Director of the Living Space Project and Julie Hirigoyen, CEO of the UK Green Building Council for a panel session on The Pivotal Role of Education in Creating

Sustainable Cities and Communities. Chair of the Environmental Audit Select Committee, Mary Creagh MP, will deliver a keynote providing insight into how the UK Government has allocated responsibility for UK implementation for the Goals, how well Government is facilitating UK activity and what new opportunities exist for the EAUC community to support, influence and deliver education’s transformational contribution to the SDG agenda. During the conference, there will also be more than 35 optional breakout sessions, all of which are streamed around the Sustainable Development Goals and allow delegates to tailor their conference experience to suit their job role and experience level. So whether you’re a Director of Estates, Energy, Travel or Waste Professional or an Estates and Facility Manager, the EAUC Conference will offer sessions relevant for your role. Key workshops of interest will include: n University College of Estate Management considering how universities and colleges can achieve excellence in a sustainable university refurbishment. The workshop will reflect on a range of environmental criteria from waste, energy, transport, materials and procurement, and highlight the opportunities these offer to embed sustainability into the

core operations of a building. n University of London looking at energy use across UK university campuses and finding out what it would take for universities to meet the needs of the treaty in terms of energy use and carbon reduction. n NUS and Solar SOAS exploring how divestment can fund energy efficiency and renewables on campus. n Lancaster University discussing their end of year recycling project, Exodus, which is now in its ninth year and, last summer, prevented 46 tonnes of waste going to landfill by either redistributing it on campus or dispersing it amongst local and international charities. As host institution, Lancaster University will also deliver a number of sessions throughout the conference to showcase their sustainability initiatives. These will include a pre-conference workshop exploring their Carbon Management Plan, which will include a visit to their Green Gown Award Winning wind turbine, as well as a workshop to show delegates how they are using their outdoor and food growing spaces to diversify the way that academics from all faculties can embed sustainability within the curriculum at Lancaster. n For more information visit www.eaucconference.org.uk/

BUILDING RESTORATION 32

One stop shop Fit out contractor Overbury and Architecture PLB’s interior design team have transformed a central London library into a flexible and contemporary student hub

Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

N

ational fit out and refurbishment specialist Overbury recently completed a £2.1 million project for the London School of Economics (LSE) on Portugal Street, creating a fit-forpurpose academic, personal and professional development centre known as LSE Life. Transforming 20,000 sq ft into an entirely flexible space and “one stop shop” for students was a big task, says LSE Teaching and Learning Centre director Dr Neil Mclean.

“The main objective of the project – the first of its kind – was to design and build a facility that would showcase LSE Life as a centre. We needed a central hub that would connect thousands of LSE students to our services. Our students come from all over, and many are new to London altogether, so it’s important that they know enough about us to be able to take advantage of the opportunities we offer,” he continues. “Not only did our students need a place to go, they needed to know that we were committed to their professional

and personal development. This space represents everything we do and, importantly, it was designed with them in mind.” Architecture PLB was tasked with developing a design that provided a mix of social, quiet and collaborative areas, which reflect new ways of learning and approaches to education, while Overbury was contracted to bring these plans to life around the busy schedules of LSE staff and students. “Delivering any project in an occupied g building is always a challenge,” says

Campus Estate Management Winter 2017 33

Bob Banister, Overbury managing director in London, “so working collaboratively is the key. LSE Life’s home took three months to build and was split into two phases because the library needed to stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The entire project team pulled together to find innovative ways to limit disruption to students and staff. If we weren’t able to use acoustic hoarding – that blocks out construction noise – we worked late at night, in the early hours and on weekends.” Another challenge was moving two one-tonne air handling units into the basement. These were inched down the helical staircase using timber blocks and steel plates, turning the distinctive Norman Foster-designed stairwell into a ramp. Ducts also needed to be installed to carry air to the upper floors, which meant that the team had to drill through a solid metre of concrete. To do this discreetly,

34

a special ‘non-percussion’ diamond rig drill was used to reduce noise and vibrations. “Moving and installing the heavy air handling units without damaging them, or the staircase, is real evidence of the team’s professionalism and expertise. We knew that we would need to increase the level of fresh air coming into LSE Life, especially if we were to host some large-scale events, and this was a real challenge in an old building. The library is also a very busy building, with, on average, 800 to 1,000 students entering through the turnstiles every hour,” adds Neil, “and if the centre was to be the focal point for student services that we hoped for, we knew it had to be a comfortable environment.” After months of planning, designing and construction, LSE Life opened its doors in late September and has received positive feedback. Its first big event was a careers fair that hosted

Winter 2017 Campus Estate Management

over 900 students and since then it has been used for numerous seminars, workshops and lectures. Everything from individual study to a 200-seated lecture can be accommodated in the space. The focus on flexibility and multi-functionality means that the centre, and its intricate tessellating furniture, can be configured to support the needs of students. The Wi-Fi enabled building now also has upgraded mechanical and electrical infrastructure with new ‘power towers’ and AV facilities. Bob concludes: “We’re proud to have been part of the team who overcame a number of challenges to deliver this great student facility. We’ve built an entirely flexible space that will bring LSE closer to its students, and we hope they will enjoy the centre for many years to come.” n For more information please

flooring was high performance and practical, and Altro’s credentials offer this. “The entire project was very much a collaborative effort,” added Clark. “We worked closely with Altro, the main contractor, the college, and also the students, who were instrumental in choosing colours and themes.” Altro Flexiflow resin flooring was one of the key products in the specification, as Clark explained. “We chose this flooring for the ground floor hub, and leading into each of the other three buildings, because we wanted a seamless, solid, practical surface. “It was also paramount that the flooring in this area was flexible enough to move with the building without cracking. The hub space is multifunctional, with the furniture and layout changed on a regular basis, so the flooring needs to be able to withstand this, which Altro Flexiflow is designed to do. Altro was able to create a special

bespoke Altro Flexiflow colour for the college. “Choosing the colour for the flooring was a collaborative effort, involving all the key stakeholders, college students and staff,” said Clark. “It was important that the colour complemented the overall scheme of the hub, and after much discussion, it was decided that purple would be ideal. Altro were shown the shade the college wanted, and they were able to match it exactly. There are some great colours in the existing Altro Flexiflow palette, but from a design point of view being able to choose a bespoke colour is very appealing to clients.” Altro Flexiflow is tough enough to handle high impact areas, yet be flexible enough to move with a building. It gives a uniform and seamless finish with uninterrupted lines, and is self-levelling, which makes installation easy. With 28 colour options it’s flexible enough to fit into any design vision. g On the upper floor of the college hub,

Clark and his team chose another resin flooring — Altro MultiScreed EP Naturals, in White Yorkstone. “This flooring works very well in contrast with the smooth texture of the Altro Flexiflow. It’s also a tough, practical flooring that’s easy to clean.” Altro Multiscreed EP Naturals is a tough surface that can handle the hardest bumps and knocks. A solvent-free epoxy resin system, it has a natural appearance with nine colours evoking tones of concrete and stone. The product has improved performance and produces a high strength floor with exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance. With a nominal thickness of 4mm, it can be coved and laid to falls. The Altro Flexiflow and Altro Multiscreed EP Naturals resin floors were installed by Resincraft, who have worked with Altro products for 30 years. The company is run by directors Mark Brewer and Richard Mitchell. Mark said: “As far as we’re concerned, Altro resins are the best on the market. The company is also very professional,

they deliver on time, give us great backup, and resolve any problems quickly. “Laying the Altro resins at the college went very smoothly. Altro Flexiflow is an excellent product and easy to work with. First we prepared the new floor in the hub by diamond grinding to create a smooth surface. We then put down a layer of AltroProof SoloTM, which is a waterproof layer, so effectively a dpm. “Then we trowel laid the resin flooring — the product is very free flowing, so it quickly finds its own level. Finally, two coats of top coat were applied. The whole process took about five days to lay 200m2. “Laying 150m2 of Altro Multiscreed resin on the upper floor of the hub began with the same process of diamond grinding the screed,” continued Mark. “After this we applied a coat of AltroPrimeTM epoxy primer, then mixed the resin flooring and laid it with a sledge, a metal box that’s dragged along the floor to keep application even. It was then trowelled smooth, and two coats of sealant applied to finish off the process.”

Brian Sapsed, Head of Estates & Facilities for the college, commented: “This was a design-led project, and the Altro flooring has certainly made all the difference in helping us to achieve a modern and visually-appealing new campus. “Everyone entering the building notices the Altro Flexiflow flooring. It makes a strong first impression because it’s so striking. We are so pleased that Altro was able to exactly match the colour the students wanted. But it isn’t just good to look at, it’s also very practical and hard wearing. “The upper floor of the hub, where the Altro MultiScreed flooring is fitted, probably sees the most traffic, as that’s where students congregate. But two years after it was fitted it looks just like new, so it really is a tough product. “Everyone — from students and staff to visitors — has been very impressed with the new campus and we have achieved exactly the look we wanted. Altro products have played a vital part in this.” n For further information visit: www. altro.co.uk
