Casinos load the dice

How the latest advances in video surveillance are improving proactive oversight for casinos, and enhancing the gaming experience

Thanks to the ongoing legalisation of gamblingrelated activities and the growth of the experience economy, licensed casinos have expanded across Europe and generated record-breaking revenue figures. Research and Markets estimates the European casino market generated a revenue of USD 115.39 billion in 2023 and is poised to register a CAGR greater than 5% to 2029.

It’s a competitive sector and to maintain profitability, reputations and ensure safe and trustworthy atmospheres, security in casinos is critical. Casinos are prime targets for theft and fraud, both from external criminals and insider threats with large amounts of cash on hand, visitor traffic, wide-open environments with multiple entry

and exit points, and high-value assets throughout the premises. Criminal activity ranges from petty theft to sophisticated scams involving collusion between employees and patrons. Employees with access to sensitive areas and operational information pose a significant risk whether they are conspiring with outsiders or acting on their own. These insider threats need to be carefully monitored.

Cheating at gaming tables is a constant concern, whether it’s card counting, using electronic devices, or more traditional methods such as card marking. To prevent cheating and maintain the integrity of their games it’s imperative that casinos are constantly vigilant.

It’s little wonder that casinos are among the most prolific users of video surveillance. We see them

continuing to invest in technological advances to protect facilities, employees, and guests in their efforts to offer the ultimate experience and retain customers in an increasingly competitive global market.

International attraction

A notable recent example is the luxurious, five-star GoldenEye Casino & Resort, developed and operated by BC Industries, which is perched strategically on the Bulgaria-Turkey border and has become the latest venue to adopt advanced technology from IDIS.

BC Industries had to plan for all the aforementioned risks familiar to casino operators and also find the best video system for its high-end hospitality establishment. IDIS technology was identified as the preferred solution to tackle

COVER STORY

immediate security and safety challenges ahead of its grand opening, and the contract was awarded to IDIS integration partner Volga Elektronik.

The company describes its new camera system as a future-proof surveillance solution with ongoing options for systems integration and AI-powered analytics.

When the Svilengrad resort opened its doors in January this year it became Europe’s largest casino development. A purpose built 61,000 square metre luxury complex, the GoldenEye includes a 600+ room hotel, a vast 4,500 square metre casino floor, VIP gaming rooms, a spa centre and pool, high-end restaurants, and retail mall. Thanks to its strategic location, by the coast and close to the Turkish border, it has quickly become a major landmark attracting visitors from both countries and internationallycasino enthusiasts, tourists, spa and wellness customers, and business professionals.

High-definition monitoring

With subdued lighting and sometimes smoky conditions, chips and cards

changing hands at a rapid pace and large numbers of people surrounding tables, gaming areas area obvious targets. Countering this, pit bosses work with continual monitoring by ‘eye in the sky’ surveillance teams to spot suspicious or criminal activity early, seeking to prevent and deter attempts at fraudulent activity and eliminate stoppage which impacts the gaming experience.

The GoldenEye chose a combination of IDIS 12MP Super Fisheyes, 8MP IR dome cameras, and 5MP IR domes with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) allowing broad scene surveillance of all internal areas, without blind spots, plus targeted coverage of priority locations including gaming tables, slot machines, and cashier stations. IDIS Fisheye technology is particularly useful in allowing comprehensive UHD scene coverage without the need for costly, multiple cameras, explains Koray Ozyildirim, IDIS Turkey Country Manager.

It’s a major system, reflecting the scale of the resort. The initial phase comprises more than 600 cameras; seven 64-ch NVR recorders; IDIS Solution Suite enterprise-class VMS

including failover against a range of fault conditions and redundant power to ensure continuous recording and access to video; and all network accessories. External areas at the GoldenEye, including parking bays and entrances, are covered using IDIS 5MP bullet cameras and 2MP IR PTZs. Operated using IDIS Solution Suite VMS, it allows 24/7 multi-task monitoring by six operators and two supervisors, using a control room video wall, with live viewing and simultaneous playback.

The solution is NDAA compliant, with industry-best cybersecurity protection; and GDPR compliant, with dynamic privacy masking allowing footage to be easily exported without privacy infringement.

“Today we are designing systems that offer greater efficiency and value, while ensuring increased capability. Using a combination of 12MP Fisheyes and HD dome cameras we can enable targeted surveillance of higher risk locations, along with complete scene coverage that ensues all activity is captured and recorded, including away from the casino floor. We are deploying similar solutions successfully in the

retail sector and integrating them with retailers point of sale and ERP systems. Now the casino industry is taking advantage of the same, flexible approach and is looking for similar integration capabilities.”

Elevating surveillance with AI

Since the 1950’s when CCTV replaced elevated walkways and one-way glass that allowed employees to peer down with binoculars for monitoring gaming floors, video surveillance has been a mainstay for casino security. Indeed, it’s hard to think of an environment where it’s more crucial to have high-definition video capture of transactions and activity, easy real-time operation for multiple users, and the ability to quickly retrieve and review footage.

Now casino operators are elevating their video surveillance systems with new AI capabilities that improve security, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure a better guest experience – taking advantage of the latest AI-powered analytics options from edge cameras, AI box devices to deep learning analysis software to improve security and public safety with features including object, intrusion, loitering and face detection, and line crossing. And video surveillance is no longer just about security. Deep learning analytics give casino operators actionable insight into every aspect of their facilities as well as guest behaviour. Managers can

decide how to place and utilise staff depending on people counting, dwell time, or queues for specific gaming tables or bars. Heat maps and flow patterns distinguish where casino guests spend most of their time and how they move through the casino, allowing casino designers to optimize floor layouts for guest engagement and positive experiences.

Flexibility designed-in

At the GoldenEye resort, BC Industries needed not only to provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for hotel guests, but also to optimise efficiency in the back-of-house services. The company also wanted a futureproof and modular approach that would allow surveillance capabilities to be simply and affordably expanded, as well as easy integration with other systems, including the adoption of AI analytics.

Over several months the new system was installed to cover the casino, the hotel, and car parks. It was designed not only to ensure comprehensive coverage, but to provide a flexible route for the planned adoption of the latest AI features.

Advanced monitoring and investigation capabilities

The security team at the GoldenEye resort and casino now has a powerful video solution to keep watch over the thousands of daily visitors, to maintain safety, and to identify

any suspicious transactions or activity, says Mert Çalışkan, Casino Operations Director, GoldenEye Casino and Resort.

“IDIS video technology is perfectly designed for casino security. Our new system gives us all the advanced surveillance capabilities we need to protect our guests and our facilities. And we’ll be able to easily adapt and extend it in the future and take advantage of exciting new capabilities.”

BC Industries is also taking advantage of the capability future proofing that IDIS tech ensures, and is now testing IDIS people counting, heat maps and occupancy monitoring, with analytics targeted at the casino entrances.

These will make it easier to manage peaks and troughs in activity, and automatically alert duty managers if additional staff need to be brought on duty. And as in the retail sector, it will provide operators with additional at-a-glance intelligence around seasonal footfall trends, allowing visitor numbers to be analysed more easily against turnover.

In addition, video system integration with the casino’s ERP software is also being introduced, by overlying transaction data on recorded video for more efficient incident investigation and wider organisational benefits.

Historic Munich building adds digital key-based access management

Munich’s Hofbräuhaus enjoys an iconic status, as both a heritage property and a spiritual home for lovers of German beer. “In this historic building is the world’s most famous tavern,” explains its Security Manager, Robert Graßl. “The whole world goes in and out. Security is very important.”

Bavarian Duke Wilhelm V commissioned Munich’s original Hofbräuhaus in 1589, initially as a brewery to supply the Wittelsbacher Hof. Moved at the end of the 19th century and severely damaged during World War II, it underwent reconstruction in 1958. It now attracts tourists and city locals, seating up to 3,000 guests indoors and a further 400 in the beer garden.

Although the building is an important heritage monument, it required 21st-century digital access to keep site users safe and streamline day-to-day operations. They wanted fast, secure access rights management for employees and service providers –including up to 100 waiters working each shift – within a unified system which could authorize access at both the Hofbräuhaus and their food production facility in Brunntal.

Of course, inobtrusive digital devices and low-impact installation were a necessity to ensure compliance with heritage preservation regulations.

Digital access for a famous heritage building

Many electronic access products and technologies are not appropriate for historic buildings. An eCLIQ key-based digital access solution is different: eCLIQ cylinders are compatible with the strict monument preservation requirements at the Hofbräuhaus. They have a flush fit, so don’t even appear to be part of an electronic locking system. With wireless installation at the doors, devices blend with the building interior.

“We can exchange a mechanical cylinder 1:1 with

an eCLIQ cylinder without having to modify anything on the door or install cables,” confirms Miriem Hammoudi, Business Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY Sicherheitstechnik GmbH.

Easy operation for flexible, cost-efficient management

Every eCLIQ key has an integrated chip and is programmable individually for the keyholder. The versatility of eCLIQ is demonstrated when a key is lost: Access authorizations are removed rapidly – simply by reprogramming cylinders – ensuring security is maintained. The eCLIQ system also helps manage workflows for service providers such as cleaners: Their access is enabled on a time-limited basis. A standard battery inside each programmable electronic key powers the cylinder or padlock on insertion – and encrypts data transfer between cylinder, key and system – so no external power source or wiring is needed.

The Hofbräuhaus team manages their system via a flexible, scalable web-based platform, CLIQ Web Manager: “I can program keys from anywhere or also block them quickly if a key has been lost or if someone is no longer allowed to enter,” says Robert Graßl. “And I can install any cylinder in any door by adjusting the length. I don’t have to carry extra stock which is really cost effective.”

“The situation before the new master key system was installed was problematic,” says Robert Graßl. “Keys were distributed and nobody knew who held them. Now, everyone carries only one key programmed with details of where and when they can enter. It’s perfect.”

Mayflex enhances its Central Distribution Centre with automation

Mayflex, the distributor of Converged IP Solutions, is delighted to announce the enhancement of its Central Distribution Centre (CDC) at the Birmingham HQ, with the addition of Autostore from Swisslog.

Sam Baldwin, Mayflex Operations & Services Director commented “As a distributor, we pride ourselves on delivering a consistently great service to ensure that our customers get the products they want, in excellent condition, at the right time. We’ve been doing this successfully for over 100 years.”

Sam continued “Technology in distribution has significantly moved on and with our investment in Autostore and the introduction of the 14 Maybot robots, we can enhance our service levels further. For instance, our accuracy rate is already high at 99.93% but our aim is to achieve 99.96%, that doesn’t sound much but over a year that equates to a large number. To ensure maximum quality, the system is designed to only deliver the product required followed by every item being scanned by our sophisticated Cognex scanners. The whole process will be far quicker to process orders, which will be particularly useful for customers ordering at the trade counter or for same day despatch requirements.”

“Another great feature to benefit our customers will be the consolidation of their orders so they won’t

receive so many consignments from us moving forward.”

Sam continued “With sustainability at the heart of everything we do, the automation will also allow us to automatically choose the smallest possible outer box for each delivery, using less void filler and what’s more the boxes will be ‘crash lock boxes’ which mean we no longer need to use tape and they will be far quicker and easier for our customers to open on delivery. Autostore is also far more energy efficient and will see a significant reduction in the power that is currently used.”

Sam concluded “The installation of the project was headed up by Craig Jackson our Excel & Environ Warehouse Manager with a team made up of associates from the warehouse and IT functions. Working closely with the Swisslog the project has run extremely well taking 7 months to from start to finish. I am delighted by how the team have worked together and delivered the project on time and within budget.”

Collaboration with ASSA ABLOY helps achieve LEED Gold certification for a new manufacturing plant

Improving sustainability performance is becoming a higher priority for building developers, owners and users. One consequence is fast-growing demand for green building certifications — and therefore specification. Specialist input can make the difference between hitting and missing a project target.

As experts in industrial design and construction, GBPBP PROJPRZEM were engaged by multinational Phillips-Medisize to create and execute the concept for a major new facility outside Katowice in southern Poland. It became the latest of around 5,000 construction projects overseen by GBPBP since it was founded in 1948.

Part of the project brief was to gain LEED certification for this new manufacturing plant. To help achieve this goal, they sought specialist BIM and specification support from the early design phase right through to project completion — including for the building’s door and security and access solutions which also impact the award process.

Expertise in relevant materials and the documentation required to receive LEED credits was critical: “We knew that ASSA ABLOY had the knowledge and the access and security solutions dedicated to sustainable buildings,” explains Wojciech Szmyd at GBPBP PROJPRZEM.

ASSA ABLOY: expertise in sustainable design GBPBP PROJPRZEM partnered with ASSA ABLOY

Opening Solutions over the course of the project. This collaboration formed part of a BIM approach which GBPBP have long used to connect architects, civil engineers and installers within one transparent environment — to enable fast, accurate, cost-efficient project delivery.

A dedicated BIM consultant at ASSA ABLOY helped ensure the entire door specification process was efficient and effective. One key collaboration tool was the Openings StudioÒ software plugin for Revit®, which enabled specification changes to quickly and accurately populate the evolving building design.

The same tool also enabled transparent communication between the project coordinators and other stakeholders. Everyone was always working with accurate, up-to-date information.

This close collaboration — and the flexibility of Openings Studio — were critical in helping the team to overcome a major issue related to low-voltage designs. Any changes are handled quickly and efficiently by the software: “When it was necessary to revise the project, I made another analysis and after that received the corrected specification,” adds Wojciech Szmyd.

“I was supported throughout the entire design and construction period.”

Hanwha Vision adds new dual-light capabilities to Q series AI cameras

Dual-light cameras enable low-light performance and accurate object detection, powered by AI Hanwha Vision, the global vision solution provider, is now offering dual-light capabilities, with White LED lights and infrared in its intelligent Q Series AI cameras, to deliver enhanced and cost-effective low-light performance - ideal for keeping a wide range of outside areas safe.

The dual-light QNE-C9013RL and QNE-C8013RL cameras remove the need for external illumination sources. This reduces the costs of additional lighting, whilst avoiding light pollution from constant lighting as the cameras only use the white light when needed. The range is further complemented with a flateye design for easy installation.

Combining this dual-light capability with artificial Intelligence analytics means that these cameras provide highly accurate object - vehicle and people - detection at up to 4K resolution, even in low-light scenarios.

Automatic illumination

When people or vehicles enter a specified area, the cameras automatically switch from a discreet IR mode to illumination using a warm white light. This provides brighter, safer environments for pedestrians while also functioning as a criminal deterrent by shining or strobing a bright light on people loitering or suspicious activities. This makes the range well suited for many different uses, including protecting retail and commercial premises, or providing peace of mind and a warm welcome in residential areas.

The 3000K warm white LED light allows for full colour capture at night without washing out reflective surfaces or causing overexposure and, with aperture ratios of F1.6 and F1.2, the cameras provide exceptional

low-light performance.

AI for fewer false alarms

The recent addition of AI to Hanwha Vision’s Q series cameras enables accurate people and vehicle classification by filtering out irrelevant motion triggers, such as moving animals and waving trees, ultimately generating fewer false alarms for operators. As a result, team efficiency improves and users can conduct effective forensic searches, while also realising more efficient use of recording bandwidth.

The dual-light Q series cameras have a wide range of AI-driven features, including AI-based WiseStream III video compression, for bandwidth reduction and WiseNRII noise reduction, to limit blur in noisy, low-light environments.

AI-based business intelligence

The dual-light Q series models, similarly to the Q series AI range, come with business intelligence features including heatmap, people counting, vehicle counting, and queue management. Securing Finnish prisons for 30 years

Finland’s correctional sites have been secured for 30 years by thousands of access control readers –all made by Idesco. In an ongoing practice over the years, older reader versions have been replaced by new ones during renovations, such that all the newest prisons now use the latest encryption technologies.

Correctional sites are a very special, highly demarcated access control environment. That is because, at every moment, the movement of personnel and prisoners must be monitored to preserve security and safety. Therefore, cell doors as well as entrances to common spaces employ readers controlling access. Furthermore, access privileges are personalized to ensure their access only to those areas for which they are authorized. Such meticulous detailing of access is what ensures safety for both inmates and prison staff. Additionally, since hosting systems can retain access histories, Idesco readers fill a vital role enabling Finnish correctional sites to audit access histories whenever needed.

One could imagine the prisons’ readers sustain ongoing physical attacks against them, but Idesco readers have remained intact and functioning whenever that occurred. Idesco readers don’t even need vandal cover protection since their robust construction

withstands occasional kicking or striking, which specialist Ari Pakarinen confirms is rare.

That’s why Ari Pakarinen and fellow specialist Juha Mäki-Tikkala, from Finland’s Prison and Probation Service, feel reliability and long-life span are Idesco readers’ most valued features. They note that, the less you must call to repair readers, the lower your costs will be, the less outsiders will need to visit your prison for repairs. Indeed, Ari Pakarinen knows of correction sites in which the same Idesco readers have been constantly serving for as long as 25 years. “Idesco readers are very reliable. There are no faults in them”, says Ari Pakarinen. End-users are very familiar with Idesco readers and they are readily available from several suppliers, who are equally familiar with them. “They’re not just common in Finland but elsewhere, too”, notes Ari Pakarinen. “We appreciate Idesco’s solid product support as well; they keep customers very well-informed about their products and use”, he adds.

Cost-effectiveness, long life span and reliability have kept Finland’s Prison and Probation Service and thousands of their users satisfied with Idesco readers for 30 years. “From the beginning, Idesco has been a reliable product supplier to us”, Ari and Juha agree. “The quality-price ratio has been excellent”.

Simplifying video surveillance with unified cloud security

While modern video management software (VMS) offers multiple benefits for end-users, there are a few tedious operations associated with the implementation, scaling, maintenance, and management of video surveillance systems.

AxxonSoft is about to launch its new product Axxon Air – a unified cloud security solution that reshapes the field of video surveillance through its cloud- managed VMS. At its core, Axxon Air is dedicated to simplifying common complexities that integrators and users face when working with surveillance systems, ultimately ensuring reliable global video management with minimal investment.

Easy implementation and scaling

Cloud-managed VMS refers to a system that utilizes physical servers on-site, which are then managed and controlled through a

cloud-based service. This approach offers several advantages in overcoming complexities associated with traditional on-premises video surveillance systems.

One of the main challenges is the physical installation and setup of servers on-site, which includes configuration of cameras and users. Axxon Air offers a convenient way to deploy video surveillance systems: once Axxon Air servers and cameras are connected to the network, it’s easy to perform all the necessary operations to make the system work.

With the support for a wide range of IP cameras and all popular ONVIF standards (profiles S, G, T, and M), Axxon Air automatically discovers the connected devices and lets rapidly set them up applying mass camera configuration. The rights management system based on user roles and camera groups allows the administrator to customize large systems quickly and conveniently.

For example, a camera’s access permissions can be changed by adding or removing it from a group, while a user’s rights are modified by assigning different roles (a user can have multiple roles at the same time). And, when a camera is added to the system, the default access settings are automatically applied to it.

Implementing distributed systems or scaling a video surveillance system is not an issue either as the setup is made via the Web Configurator – a handy administrator interface that allows the configuration of remote systems through a standard web browser. You can easily add cameras and users and change any settings from anywhere.

Proactive system health monitoring When the system is up and running, ensuring its uninterrupted operation becomes paramount. Axxon Air

22 | April 2024 | IN SECURITY
SURVEILLANCE

incorporates a health monitoring service that collects data from all connected locations about camera operation, network utilization, server hardware and software condition, and storage space. The administrator can monitor system health using the dedicated board and receives notifications when the controlled parameters go out of normal. Quick identification of the source of an issue helps quickly eliminate malfunctions and maintain a high level of security at all protected sites.

Failover and configuration autobackup

To further increase system resilience, Axxon Air provides server redundancy through its Failover service. On-site Axxon Air servers can be organized into failover clusters, with standby servers that automatically take over all functions from the off-line or malfunctioning servers. After the transition of configuration, which typically takes not more than a minute, live video streaming and recording resume immediately.

In addition, Axxon Air offers auto-backup of server configurations in the cloud, which can be made on schedule or manually. It helps minimize the system downtime by quickly deploying the same configuration on another server when one of the servers goes down or you need a hardware upgrade. In combination with the proactive system health monitoring, the failover and configuration autobackup capabilities maximize the system fault tolerance, ensuring flawless operation.

Off-site software update

One of the most time-consuming processes associated with the maintenance of video management systems is software update, especially when dealing with large numbers of VMS servers. Axxon Air provides a convenient way of updating all servers at multiple locations remotely.

The administrator receives notifications of the updates released, such as important system updates, feature upgrades, and others. After selecting the necessary software packages and target servers, the process is done automatically: the

software is downloaded from the cloud and installed on the servers. Failover service allows updating servers within a cluster in turn, without the interruption of system operation. All this makes VMS software update a breeze, minimizing maintenance cost.

Secure remote access

Another complexity that cloudmanaged VMS simplifies is remote access and monitoring. Traditional on-premises systems often require complex network configurations or VPN setups to enable secure remote access to video feeds. In contrast, cloud-managed VMS provides a seamless and secure way to access and monitor video footage from anywhere, using a web-based interface or mobile application. This simplifies the process for users and allows for convenient remote management.

Axxon Air’s web client offers a set of features that are commonly found only in desktop clients. The extensive list of functions includes configuring camera layouts, H.264 and H.265 support with GPU video decoding, alarm handling, working with fisheye and PTZ cameras, using Google Maps and OpenStreetMap geo mapping services, and many others. Notable that the web client works in standard web browsers and doesn’t need installing and updating additional software. Finally, the Axxon Air mobile apps for iOS and Android support most of the web client capabilities.

Hardened cybersecurity

All connections between the Axxon Air servers, clients, and the cloud are protected with the current version of TLS encryption. AxxonSoft prioritizes cybersecurity, incorporating into its software best practices for data protection and preventing unauthorized interference with the VMS. Some of the cybersecurity features implemented in Axxon Air are:

• Two-factor authentication.

• reCAPTCHA v3 on the web client login screen.

• User password hashing.

• Password expiry and password history.

• Password strength control.

• Setting the lockout time/number of failed login attempts.

• Auto-logout after a set period of inactivity.

• Inactive account locking after a set period, with reactivation by email.

• System integrity checks at server startup.

Besides, AxxonSoft regularly conducts penetration tests of its products by specialty companies to identify and address vulnerabilities promptly.

Direct camera to cloud connection

Axxon Air capitalizes on using the camera’s onboard storage as the primary site for data retention. This method is crucial for several reasons. First, it ensures immediate data capture and storage without the latency that can sometimes occur with direct cloud uploads. Cameras equipped with sufficient storage capabilities can record highresolution video locally, providing a reliable first line of defense in data integrity and security. Local storage on the camera offers robustness against network vulnerabilities. In instances where internet connectivity is compromised, the surveillance system continues to function effectively, capturing and storing footage that can be crucial for security purposes. This setup guarantees that no critical data is lost due to connectivity issues.

Bridging Legacy Systems

Understanding the diverse needs of organizations, Axxon Air includes a bridging solution for legacy cameras that do not natively support cloud connectivity. This bridge allows older systems to benefit from local storage while also taking advantage of cloud backup. By integrating these legacy systems into a modern surveillance network, Axxon Air ensures that all parts of an organization’s security apparatus can remain cutting-edge without necessitating costly wholesale replacements.

AI video analytics and smart search AxxonSoft has at its command a full cycle for AI video analytics development. Axxon Air contains ready-made neural networks for common tasks such as human/ vehicle detection, human posture

IN SECURITY | April 2024 | 23

recognition, fire/smoke detection, crowd detection, and PPE detection under standard conditions.

In addition, AxxonSoft offers AI training for specific conditions and purposes, including unusual viewing angles, difficult lighting, detection of particular objects, and the use of thermal cameras.

In regard of smart search for recorded video, AxxonSoft is one of the pioneers to implement this technology in VMS. Axxon Air intelligent search capabilities range from simple and very convenient search by motion in a designated area to sophisticated tools such as search by object color and type. Advanced AI-powered analytics and search features also encompass multiple-camera human search based on similarity in appearance; vehicle license plate, make, and model recognition and search based on these criteria.

Customizable reporting

The key advantage of cloud-based reporting is its capability for centralized aggregation of analytical and statistical data from all connected locations. The Axxon Air reports can represent various data, such as the number of visitors and queue length, which is especially useful for retail, or recognized vehicle license plate numbers and different alarms accompanied by footage. The user can configure reports to cover other video analytics data and events as well.

Convenient video sharing Axxon Air offers the convenient capability to share video recordings directly from the cloud through a secure link with configurable access. You can export selected video episodes to the cloud to quickly share them with relevant agencies/ staff, without the need for using flash drives or third-party cloud storage.

Additionally, the video clips can be protected with a watermark to ensure their authenticity.

Conclusion

Axxon Air is a comprehensive cloud-managed solution that greatly simplifies the processes of implementation, scaling, maintenance, and management of video surveillance systems. With easy installation, flexible customization, robust data security, and advanced analytics and search capabilities, Axxon Air provides convenience, high performance, and enhanced security. This solution enables users to effectively manage video surveillance, ensuring reliability and flexibility in working with systems of any scale and complexity.

security for a changing world

The importance of recruiting more women into security by Simon Martindill, Head of Marketing, G4S Changing face of security

G4S Secure Solutions (UK) outlines why there is a need for more women in security and what G4S is doing to make the security industry a more diverse and inclusive profession. If you were to close your eyes and describe a security officer, would they be a man?

With only around 11% of frontline security officers in the UK being women, it’s likely that most people would think of a man. However, G4S anticipates that, within the next few years, this preconception will become outdated. The company is driving positive action to make the security industry a more diverse and inclusive profession that represents

the people it aims to protect.

Over the next few years the security industry will be one that places great value on communication, interpersonal skills, diversity and utilises cutting-edge technology. The security officer of the future will be more emotionally intelligent and will rely on people skills rather than physical attributes of strength. Even the ability to speak additional languages will become more important in our multicultural society.

According to the first ever World Security Report, 67% of Chief Security Officers (CSOs) in the UK say emotional intelligence will be

extremely important for frontline officers. In fact, the research found that, for nine out of ten respondents, people skills in frontline security professionals are more important than physical attributes of strength.

With the growing importance of a more diverse security workforce and with women offering the skills needed, increasing the number of women in security is critical.

At G4S UK, a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Council, which includes representation from different groups from across the business, is providing focus, direction and taking action.

26 | April 2024 | IN SECURITY
PHYSICAL SECURITY

Fiona Walters, CEO of G4S UK and Ireland says: “We perform a really important role in society, safeguarding our communities. It is so important to have the right people for the job and for security to reflect the demographics of the societies we work in. We have an ongoing drive to improve and increase the percentage of women who not only are joining the industry but who are also getting promoted and pursuing careers.

“The fact is that women can have a fulfilling career in security that allows them to leverage their skills. We need to break down the stereotypes. As our recent World Security Report showed, the softer skills are often actually more effective, and, in many markets, increasing numbers of corporate security leaders are women.”

In the UK & Ireland, G4S sets its recruitment targets to increase the number of women hired, compared to previous years.

Tim Kendall, Managing Director of G4S Secure Solutions UK says: “We are committed to putting practical actions in place to drive positive change. We have a key strategic objective to improve DE&I across our business and we are supporting industry change by collaborating with the DE&I Forum endorsed by the SIA and Forum members for the Private Security Industry.”

The changing face of security In many cases, the security officer is the first and last visitor interaction, so their customer service and engagement are a key part of the guest experience.

Claire Daniel, Operations Director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) works with G4S and says: “In the security role it isn’t about being strong, there’s so much more around customer service and being able to ask inquisitive questions, but in a way that is welcoming. Security and customer service go hand in hand, it’s a role that requires empathy, and I think we need more women in it.”

A diverse security workforce is key to making communities feel safe and women offer so many of the skills that effective security demands. Furthermore, there are specific roles, such as searching and screening, where it is a requirement for women to perform the role.

Claire Daniel continues: “At WCCC, we are working to make sure that cricket is accessible to all. We are now seeing many more women and children come to our matches and, at a recent match, 44% of the spectators were women. On a practical level this means that we also need more women in the security team, or female spectators will have a poorer experience because they have to wait to be searched.”

So why aren’t women joining the industry?

Perception is key, and unfortunately, many people still perceive security to be a poorly paid, dangerous career that provides limited career development. G4S believes that this is not the case and the industry needs to address the perception issue.

Jane Fairweather is the G4S Operations Director at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station and worked in banking for 28 years before starting at G4S as a frontline event steward. She says “My mum was horrified when I told her I was going to work in security, but I loved working at events and progressed in my career with G4S. It took a long time to get over to her what happens in security, and I think that’s where the problem lies: it’s the perception.”

Jane adds that language used in the industry must not exclude women: “The term ‘manned guarding’ is outdated, risks excluding women and is no longer appropriate to use. Moving forwards, I hope that there will be further development of the names used to describe the breadth of security roles carried out by a diverse workforce.”

Manager agrees: “I believe that job titles should reflect more accurately what the roles involve. This will attract people who may not have previously considered a career in security. For example, a front of house security role could be called Concierge Manager rather than Security Officer.”

What is G4S Doing?

In the UK and Ireland, G4S is working hard to retain, develop, and learn from the existing women who work across the business. Underpinning this objective is G4S’ Women’s Initiative Network, which provides information and assistance to women in the business.

Heike Butler, G4S Head of Social Value and Sustainability says: “We’ve created the G4S Women’s Initiative Network to provide support to female security officers and help build equality and equity. As well as being a useful source of information, it is about trying to ensure that women are comfortable in the workplace and that their specific needs have not been inadvertently overlooked. We want women to feel confident and positive in their roles and have been undertaking site visits to ensure that we understand their work environments and ensure that they know that they are supported.”

G4S is working with clients, such as Yusen Logistics UK, who are committed to providing equal opportunities, achieving full inclusivity and eliminating all forms of discrimination. Yusen Logistics believes that providing improved development opportunities for women will help to redress the gender imbalance across the logistics industry. The company

IN SECURITY | April 2024 | 27

runs internal campaigns raising awareness of gender-related topics and challenges faced by female colleagues, and has recently improved its maternity and paternity pay policy. Along with hybrid working options for many roles, Yusen Logistics’ Flexible Workforce programme offers a solution for both men and women who need work flexibility and women now also account for 58% of the company’s apprenticeship programme.

Poppy Lofting, Risk & Technical Apprentice at Yusen Logistics says: “Female role models within the security industry hold the key to dispelling some industry myths. Yusen Logistics is providing me with opportunities to turn theory into practice, by acquiring hands-on experience through direct exposure to real-world scenarios. I’m just at the beginning of my career journey, but you just never know, perhaps one day I might inspire more women to start a career in security.”

While there are some instances where flexibility is difficult, there are already many roles that offer office hours, split shifts, or other shifts that may suit candidates. Security in certain sectors, such as retail, can offer flexible options. G4S is working closely with customers to understand and provide that flexibility to help attract a more

Claire Daniel believes that candidates wanting more flexible or shorter shifts shouldn’t be seen as a barrier but as an opportunity for employers: “At Edgbaston for example, we want to be ‘Edgbaston for everyone’. To be truly for everyone that means that we will have to adapt some of the styles of working. To reduce the length of shifts, if we employed ten women and swapped with ten different women after 6 hours, who are all trained the same, what’s the problem?.”

Recruitment is also a focus. Head of Resourcing, Fran Watts explains more: “Recruitment of women is a priority for G4S, and we are looking at how we can target women more effectively and communicate that security can offer them a positive and rewarding career. In addition, we ensure that our recruitment advertising does not include words or imagery that makes it appear biased towards one gender and we have created videos and campaigns that make it clear that security represents a viable career choice for women.

“We recognise that the recruitment process can take longer than many other sectors, so G4S also runs women-only video calls where potential new recruits have the opportunity to talk to women

already working at G4S, to find out about their experience and ask questions.”

G4S is also running campaigns that celebrate the contribution of the women who work across G4S. A series of women have been interviewed, talking about their perception of security and their experiences with content shared across social media. The company is also investing in reward schemes and industry award submissions that provide recognition of outstanding achievements.

The future and the benefits

With the changing face of security, the need to ensure officers have relevant skills and the importance of creating a diverse workforce, recruitment and progression of women is a priority. While there is a long way to go, G4S believes it is leading the way.

Fiona Walters, G4S CEO UK and Ireland concludes: “I am passionate about trying to encourage more women into the security industry. I have benefited from being able to progress through the business, and I have a responsibility to ensure that other women have that opportunity as well.”

Navigating the 2024 threat landscape

British businesses are subject to threats posted by both geopolitical and socioeconomic issues and events.

The increase in food prices and the instability around the supply of goods, both of which have fallen out of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, have had a national and global impact.

What’s happening in the Middle East is also giving rise to massive demonstrations on a regular basis across the UK from Pro-Palestinian organisations. Added to that, activist groups such as Just Stop Oil are

becoming increasingly aggressive with their tactics, often causing public and business inconvenience.

In 2023, YouGov reported that 64 per cent of those who protested said they had done so repeatedly, with the most common causes cited as climate related issues, global conflicts, and domestic issues including the cost-of-living crisis. Protests are a democratic right and freedom of expression should be respected and upheld. It is the job

of law enforcement and security providers to balance the right to protest with the protection of the public from crowds that turn violent.

In 2023, the police made 630 arrests of climate protesters in London in just one month. The number of injuries and cost of criminal damage is impossible to calculate, but, if the media reports are anything to go by, we can agree they are too high.

Geopolitical and socioeconomic threats, and the protests that

30 | April 2024 | IN SECURITY
THREAT MITIGATIO

accompany them, in addition to the spiralling concerns about cybersecurity, promise to cause yet more disruption to businesses in 2024 and beyond, unless action is taken.

Threat mitigation & elimination

Given the complex and ever-evolving threat landscape, organisations in today’s world without a security policy in place are failing themselves, and their stakeholders. Safeguarding employee health and safety is mandatory. It’s enshrined in law, so every organisation in the country has or should have a health and safety policy. Despite the critical nature of the security profession in business and everyday life, having a security policy in place is not mandated in law. As such, there can be the tendency for some organisations to adopt a ‘freestyle’ approach when it comes to their security provision. The potential introduction of Martyn’s Law will change this for the better, but until

then the onus is on businesses to create their own security culture and implement appropriate security measures.

It’s best practice to have a robust security strategy and policy in place to have a baseline when it comes to addressing and mitigating security risks. These risks will vary from business to business, so it’s important to consider the priorities. It’s not just about having a security policy in place, but the right security policy in place depending on the nature, location, and operation of your business. For example, a business with a global supply chain that is dealing with production and parts that are in short supply will have a different approach to security to an organisation that is not dependent on suppliers from overseas.

It’s important to remember that you can be a collateral target by virtue of who’s around you, so know your neighbours. Could they be a target for whatever reason?

If so, then so are you by default. When reviewing physical security measures, organisations need to look beyond their own building and the immediate perimeter. They need to look around and to the periphery to identify where there may be other vulnerabilities.

A culture of organisational resilience In addition to a robust security strategy, there needs to be companywide buy-in to the importance of security and a culture of resilience within the business. Organisational resilience doesn’t just deal with the day-to-day security elements, but rather the ability to survive, recover, and prosper should a business be attacked or find itself in the path of an attack. Assessing the effectiveness of security measures and controls requires trained security professionals to conduct regular risk threat vulnerability assessments that are specifically tailored for that business. If it was an

IN SECURITY | April 2024 | 31

organisation that holds a lot of events, for example, the risk and threat assessments should be conducted before any major events, and regularly throughout the year. Any change in business activities, such as acquisitions and mergers, should also prompt a review. Dynamic risk assessments are vital when things happen suddenly, such as in response to an incident, or in response to anything that could change the security posture of an organisation.

A strategy should be living, breathing, and evolving in light of the insight gleaned from risk and threat assessments. It should also include the provision and revision of appropriate equipment, including fencing, lighting, hostile vehicle mitigation, CCTV, alarms, and robust access control. Considering how technology can support security officers can increase resilience and effectiveness of a security provision. Remote monitoring centres can monitor intruder alarms and panic alarms, CCTV, and access control which can trigger fast responses by police and/or security personnel. It is impossible to be culturally resilient without well-trained security

officers that are cognisant and aware of threats and procedures, that can effectively cascade that knowledge across an organisation. Non-security personnel need to be aware of the procedures in place to ensure business readiness when an alarm is triggered or when a lockdown is enforced.

What’s at the other side of the hill?

As the Duke of Wellington so eloquently put it – “All the business of war, and indeed all the business of life, is to endeavour to find out what you don’t know by what you do; that’s what I called ‘guessing what was at the other side of the hill’.”

If I was running a business, especially a production business, I’d be concerned about the threat from artificial intelligence. Although there’s a lot of benefits to be reaped from AI, there’s also a lot of risk – everything from the creation of false narratives to the cyber and security risk that comes with digital vulnerabilities. More education is needed to ensure businesses are pre-empting eventualities that may seem far off but are closer than many think. At Corps Security, we make it our mission to share our

knowledge and expertise to the wider market, through our Corps Relay Intelligence Reports, which are free and accessible to all.

Businesses that have their own in-house professional security advisers should be sharing regular daily intelligence updates, briefings and assessments on the global geopolitical scene, and how issues and events that arise out of that intel may impact the business. Those that rely on external security service providers should be looking to them to keep them abreast of intelligence and information as to where they need to focus their budget, time and efforts when it comes to security measures. That includes monitoring social media for real time alerts and information about anything that’s going on in the world or nationally that can impact business operations or the safety of stakeholders.

Ultimately, businesses need to be aware of the ever-evolving threat landscape surrounding them, because without that awareness, and the planning and preparation that must accompany it, they are putting themselves, their stakeholders and the communities they serve at risk.

Leading Finnish bank makes an investment in PACOM’s VIGIL CORE security management platform

Banking premises require a robust security infrastructure in order to safeguard sensitive financial information, customer data and valuable assets. When a leading investment bank in Finland needed to enhance the protection of its archive room, it turned to PACOM’s cutting edge VIGIL CORE security management platform.

A bank’s archive room is a

designated location, often in a basement, which is designed for the storage and preservation of critical documents, customer records, historical financial information, legal agreements and other important paperwork. As a repository for a wide range of sensitive materials, an archive room plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of a bank’s records.

Banks are subject to stringent

regulatory requirements to ensure the security and privacy of customer data, so organizing documents in an archive room allows them to efficiently manage and retrieve information when needed, facilitating internal audits, regulatory compliance checks and responding to customer inquiries. Given the sensitive nature of the stored documents, access must be restricted to designated personnel

34 | April 2024 | IN SECURITY
BANKING SECURITY

only to protect against unauthorized handling or removal. As such, these spaces are typically equipped with advanced security measures.

Northern star

In order to mitigate any emerging risks and threats, banks need to employ an ongoing program of security infrastructure upgrades. When a leading investment bank in Finland needed to improve the security of an archive room in one of its locations in Helsinki, it asked for recommendations from Securitas Technology – a PACOM value added reseller for over 25 years.

Mikko Seppänen, product manager at Securitas Technology, takes up the story and explains, ‘As a world leading provider of integrated security solutions that employs approximately 13,000 people across the globe, we have experience of working with a wide range of technologies. We operate extensively within the financial sector, so

understand that nothing can be left to chance and only the best will do. When we were asked to suggest ways to maximize the integrity of our client’s archive room, we researched the best possible option, which we decided was PACOM’s VIGIL CORE integrated security management platform.’

Reach for the sky

Intelligent, user friendly and highly cost effective, VIGIL CORE is a cloud based software solution that offers the flexibility, scalability, affordability and functionality demanded by today’s organizations. It has been designed to redefine what’s possible in security integration management, without any legacy restrictions, and is able to deliver valuable business intelligence, operational insights and efficiencies.

‘End users are now able to harness the power of the cloud through VIGIL CORE,’ comments Brad McMullen, PACOM’s general manager

of security products and solutions. ‘VIGIL CORE is a true gamechanger and a great fit for customers with single sites, hundreds of sites or large campus environments. Its fully customizable dashboard can be accessed via any internet connected desktop PC or smartphone. It can also scale up and down as required and provides existing PACOM users with an opportunity to migrate to it quickly and easily.’

All for one and one for all Limiting access to sensitive areas within the bank is vital and different levels of access can be assigned based on job roles. In archive rooms, access control systems are often integrated with other security technologies. Intrusion detection systems detect unauthorized access or entry attempts, while video surveillance systems are strategically placed to monitor entry points and critical areas, serving both as a deterrent and a means of

IN SECURITY | April 2024 | 35

recording any suspicious activities. Alarm systems can be linked to access control systems to trigger alerts in the event of unauthorized access attempts and configure transactional logs.

Securitas Technology’s Mikko Seppänen states, ‘This is the first time VIGIL CORE has been installed in Finland, so for us it provided a great opportunity to find out more about its features and benefits. Our customer needed the system to be up and running very quickly and we were very impressed with how easy it was to deploy. The archive room is quite small, so we integrated the access and control and intrusion detection systems on the same panel, and there is the potential to expand the system adding doors and cameras as required. The integration of security systems is the way forward and it’s clear that VIGIL CORE has great potential across many vertical sectors and organizations of all sizes.’

Under control

Administration of access control systems involves careful management and oversight. With VIGIL CORE system administrators can configure access levels, assign credentials and regularly review and update security settings – helping to ensure that the administrator accounts are always controlled correctly.

In order to ensure that the bank’s security infrastructure is fully up to date, VIGIL CORE is able to carry out automatic software and firmware installations to allow it to benefit from the latest security features and enhancements. Doing this in a standardized manner takes the burden of managing the cybersecurity of the system off of the end user, while helping to ensure regulatory compliance through built-in operational features and documentation. Securitas Technology can also carry out remote diagnostics, troubleshooting and maintenance when needed.

Statement of account

Having been successfully implemented within the customer’s defined timeframe, a bank spokesperson concludes, ‘A safe and secure archive room is vital for the continuity and stability of a bank. It not only supports day to day operations but also acts as a safeguard against unforeseen events such as legal disputes, regulatory investigations or audits. Why sustainable solutions are vital for the security industry’s future

In an era marked by growing environmental consciousness, industries are actively seeking innovative ways to embrace sustainability. However, one sector that has often been overlooked in

this context is security. Nevertheless, a transformative shift is currently underway, reshaping the security industry’s approach to sustainability.

The journey to transform the security industry into a sustainable

powerhouse is not without its challenges. For CLD Systems the primary hurdle lies in garnering support from its stakeholders and ensuring that sustainable solutions are viewed as valuable investments

SUSTAINABILITY

rather than burdensome costs.

Overcoming this obstacle requires collective efforts to integrate sustainable practices throughout the industry, promoting product reuse and longevity, while dispelling the misconception that sustainability compromises profitability.

Driving the security industry towards sustainability requires designing sustainable products and solutions from project inception and allocating adequate budgets for them. By embedding sustainability as a core consideration, the industry can proactively implement sustainable solutions on a wider scale. Achieving this vision requires collaboration among all stakeholders and a commitment to challenging the status quo.

The increasing priority placed on sustainable solutions by customers across various industries has begun to influence the security sector as well. While larger projects have made notable strides in adopting sustainability, there remains untapped potential for smaller ventures.

CLD Systems, the leading UK manufacturer and supplier of rigid mesh fencing and security gates, showcases its commitment to sustainable solutions with the integration of its On-Ground FenceSafe product during the construction phase of projects. Made with a 100% recycled base and 78% recycled steel, this product serves a dual purpose. It can be used during construction and then converted into a permanent fenceline or easily deployed on the next project, showcasing the versatility of such solutions and promoting positive sustainable outcomes. By utilising recycled materials, CLD Systems not only showcases the versatility of sustainable solutions but also significantly reduces carbon emissions and waste generation, making a positive impact on the environment.

The On-Ground FenceSafe is positioned directly on the ground, eliminating the need for physical tools, streamlining operations whilst

minimising resource consumption. This approach effectively minimises environmental impact and lowers carbon emissions.

The shift toward sustainability in the security industry is driven by customers’ heightened awareness of environmental issues and their desire to align their projects with sustainable values. This growing demand underscores the changing landscape of customer expectations, where sustainability is a crucial factor in decision-making processes. More clients are now seeking BREEAM excellence, the world’s leading science-based suite of validation and certification systems for sustainable built environment. This places a significant responsibility on CLD Systems as manufacturers to challenge the status quo and provide innovative, sustainable solutions. To achieve this, CLD Systems collaborates with contractors who operate zero-towaste schemes, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices.

In response to the ever-evolving nature of the security sector, CLD Systems has emerged with a solution that aligns with sustainable principles: rental options. This approach offers clients greater flexibility while minimising waste.

The RiseMaster HE Barrier, an automatic boom arm barrier system powered entirely by solar energy, exemplifies this commitment. Featuring primary and secondary photovoltaic panels, it eliminates the need for road crossing control

cabling during installation, reducing environmental impact and carbon emissions. With 24/7 solar autonomy and zero carbon emissions over a 10-year life cycle, it sets a new standard for sustainable security solutions. The integration of Bluetooth connectivity reduces the reliance on physical tools, streamlining operations and minimising resource consumption.

As the security industry aligns itself with the broader environmental movement, CLD

Systems’ commitment to offering rental solutions and solar-powered innovations paves the way for a greener and more secure future. By embracing collaboration, innovation, and sustainable product design, the industry can make a significant impact in addressing environmental challenges while meeting customer demands for a more sustainable and secure world.
