Adaptive seating Furniture for active learning, creating maker-centred learning spaces
T
he maker movement is drastically altering the environment and culture of our classrooms. By understanding this evolution, we can ensure learning spaces are best prepared to embrace this new active way of learning, ensuring teachers and students can make the most of their time together. The maker culture features a connected and personal focus on active learning and doing, nurturing the skills required in the workforce of the future. Teachers are becoming mentors, and distributed teaching and learning is occurring throughout a fluid, interdisciplinary process. A makerspace is by nature one that facilitates and encourages this dynamic

learning method. The conventional idea of a classroom, linear and constrained, must be erased. By thinking outside the traditional 4 walls of the classroom, we can promote uninhibited exploration, support movement, interaction and collaboration – not just between teachers and students, but between the students themselves. Here are a few ideas and common themes observed across the maker movement:
should be mobile, vary in size, and provide easy on-demand access.
Flexible storage Maker-centred learning involves prototyping, crafting and iterative processes. Design-based approaches to problem-solving require access to supplies and a safe place to store workin-progress. Storage within the space
Seating Adaptive seating easily allows students and teachers to move throughout a space, giving them the freedom to reconfigure layouts. Additionally, movement not only facilitates new ways of learning, it is beneficial to
Worksurfaces Students need a platform where they can do both individual and group work. A worksurface isn’t just for a notepad or laptop anymore, it must accommodate other learning tools that enhance and reinforce agency (the capacity to make choices and decisions).
human health. An active learning space discourages a sedentary culture, whilst improving concentration, retention, productivity and wellbeing for students and teachers. Writable worksurfaces Surfaces for expressing and sharing ideas – marker boards, magnetic or stickable walls allow students and teachers to generate and synthesise ideas as they work through the creative design thinking process. KI’s Perry chair selected for the University of Edinburgh’s ongoing transformation The University of Edinburgh is cementing its reputation as one of the world’s top higher education institutions, undertaking a transformative programme of works. Set for completion in 2030, this phased upgrade to its facilities has recently seen the opening of the Lister Learning & Teaching Centre. The refurbishment of this 5-storey, 1970 building at the heart of the campus was designed by renowned Scottish architects Reiach and Hall, and features traditional yet flexible classroom styles. Designed to offer students a vibrant, flexible learning environment, each floor features fixed partitioned rooms that can be reconfigured quickly and easily. This flexibility was an important requirement for the university to ensure each room could be multipurpose and adapt to multiple lesson
styles. Working with Azzurro, the university selected KI’s Perry chairs, specified in contrasting polypropylene and upholstery in shades of blues, reds, oranges, beiges, greys, greens and white, add a splash of bright colour and give the rooms a distinctive character. The KI Perry chair is already in use across the university, selected for its unrivalled comfort. Its unique articulating backrest moves with the user’s own weight, optimising comfort for prolonged seated periods. Improved comfort has been shown to enhance learning outcomes, making this high density stacking chair the ideal choice for educational environments. Some
rooms have been furnished with tables and chairs, whilst others offer even more flexibility with Perry’s unique oversized, removable tablet arm in both left- and right-handed versions. Alison Mallett, National Sales Manager, KI Europe comments: “The illustrious history and alumni of the University of Edinburgh is breath-taking. To think that some of tomorrow’s Nobel laureates, Prime Ministers, doctors, scientists, authors and more, will have spent some of their academic lives sat in our Perry chairs is really humbling. We are very proud to be a part of the university’s transformation as it prepares for an exciting future.”

reviewed many other schools, and visited similar projects completed by Witley Jones for other schools, gaining insight into design and function for the innovative learning environment. Paul Jochimsen, business manager, Swanbourne House, comments: “We are very proud of the new facilities which place us at the cutting edge of education. Postura+ chairs were the perfect addition for these spaces as we already had them elsewhere in the school and had received very positive feedback from staff and pupils. They are robust, brightly coloured, stackable, and mitigate against children tipping them over backwards. The teachers love them as they are easy to clean and the children find them very comfortable.” In each of the new rooms, Postura+ was selected in Ink Blue to provide ergonomic, durable seating. One-piece polypropylene
stacking chairs enhance student comfort and performance in theory spaces, while Postura+ task chairs provide easy swivel movement and height adjustability for computer lab spaces. Stackable, sledbased Postura+ stools with integral bag hooks provide the perfect solution for the design & technology rooms. Matt Jones, director, Witley Jones, comments: “Working with Swanbourne House over the years has allowed us to provide furniture and fittings to help them create innovative learning spaces fit for the future. KI’s Postura+ range match our commitment to quality, durability and value for money. Being able to specify a variety of seating options in a consistent quality and aesthetic made them an obvious choice for this vibrant learning environment.” n For more information please visit www.kieurope.com

Breathing Buildings launches ventilation for schools brochure Student well-being is key when it comes to selecting a ventilation system for schools. To help ensure the provision of healthy air in schools, Breathing Buildings has launched a new sector-specific brochure titled ‘Ventilation for Schools’. The ventilation design, specification, installation and commissioning process of an educational facility can be complex and daunting. ‘Ventilation for Schools’ aims to aid this process by outlining key considerations for ventilation in schools including individual spaces such as school halls, IT classrooms, classrooms with sloping roofs and landlocked rooms, while also providing details on suitable products for each area. The provision of ventilation in a school requires the designer to understand and navigate the interplay of three key factors – air quality, thermal comfort and energy use. The brochure demonstrates the company’s range of energy-efficient natural and hybrid ventilation systems that can provide optimum thermal comfort and good air quality. Set out over eight full colour pages, the brochure showcases a range of Breathing Building products including R-Series, NVHR®, S-Series, F-Series and A-Series. The brochure provides specifiers and building services consultants with advice on ensuring compliance with school building regulations including BB101 and BB93. It also showcases examples of other prestigious installations that have included the featured Breathing Buildings ventilation system. “Education is a key sector for Breathing Buildings,” says Matthew Bray, Commercial Director at Breathing Buildings. “Many in the
education sector are looking at ways to save energy and have identified low-energy ventilation systems as a way of doing this. Our new dedicated brochure points the way; it provides information on our full range of natural and hybrid ventilation products as well as guidance and inspiration for designers looking to specify ventilation for educational facilities.” n

Works to upgrade facilities at Grade II listed university theatre now complete Theatre students will benefit from improved facilities including a new refectory, library, IT suite, and common room following the £2m upgrade of a Grade II listed theatre. The work was carried out at the E15 Acting School’s Corbett Theatre, part of the University of Essex’s Loughton Campus. It included the demolition of tired existing extensions and replacing them with two contemporary linked buildings, housing a new library, common room, IT, changing facilities, kitchen, and refectory spaces, along with external breakout areas. The scheme was designed by property and construction consultancy Ingleton Wood, which has offices across the East of England and London. Those behind the scheme say the newly refurbished building will significantly improve the provision of student facilities at the Loughton Campus, making a positive impact on the surrounding landscape and overall student experience. Chris Stammers, Director and Architect at Ingleton Wood, said: “The style of the new building complex is sensitively designed to complement the pseudo-agricultural aesthetic of the main theatre hall. Its new extensions are deliberately subservient in scale and ordered as simple volumes, which emulates a modest collection of Essex barns nestled within the parkland landscape. “The architectural detailing is crisp and modern, with a material
palette that cohesively ties the building group together. The internal spaces largely echo the external forms, with the principal full height vaulted space of the refectory serving as the focal student social hub for the wider campus.” Martin Croot, Contracts Manager at building contractor TJ Evers, which carried out the construction work, added: “It’s great to be involved in such an important project that will provide a huge boost, not just to the university, its staff and students – but to the whole local community. We’re delighted with the results.” The E15 Acting School was founded more than 50 years ago and is a leading UK conservatoire, merging with the University of Essex in 2000. Professor Leon Rubin, Director of the E15 Acting School, said: “The improved building will serve as the student hub for the E15 campus – providing state-of-the-art facilities that will ensure we can continue to maintain the highest of standards as one of the UK’s leading theatre schools.” n For further information, please visit www.ingletonwood.co.uk

Technal specified for university healthcare building The University of Lincoln has invested £19m in the construction of the Sarah Swift Building, which is nw home to the Schools of Health and Social Care and Psychology. Working with BAM Construction North East and Glasshus, Technal supplied its MX Visible Grid curtain walling, PY 55 doors and FY 65 windows to the project, specified due to their versatility and aesthetic qualities. Named in honour of South Lincolnshire-born Dame Sarah Ann Swift GBE RRC, the founder of the Royal College of Nursing, the new five-storey academic building houses a broad range of flexible learning spaces for students and staff – including new teaching areas, offices, clinical simulation facilities for the School’s healthcare programmes and psychology laboratories for extensive research. Furthermore, the building also includes the Professional Development Centre, a facility that provides ongoing training for professionals who require skills-based training. The two separate schools are architecturally divided by a glass atrium, allowing them to retain their separate identities. Technal’s MX Visible Grid curtain walling with multi-shade glass spandrels have been used, to stunning effect. With such a diverse range of learning and research spaces, the brief for the specialist building was to create spaces that have the right environmental conditions. One of the highest considerations was to minimise and reduce external noise pollution, and internally, from room to room and from floor to floor. Technal’s MX Visible Grid, through a combination of acoustic glazing, acoustic dampers and cleaver detailing provides a range of solutions. MX Visible Grid curtain walling also offers design flexibility. Available in a choice of glazing gaskets, it achieves superior load distribution and is suitable for flat or faceted facades. Technal’s PY 55 doors and FY 65 windows were also used throughout the building. The PY 55 doors are ideal for high traffic applications and offer exceptional levels of security and thermal performance. The doors were also chosen as they meet the requirements of Part Q of the Building Standards, having achieved PAS 24:2016. The FY 65 windows are the latest innovation in Technal’s window suites, in an on-going drive to provide practical, economical solutions to the market place. In addition, the FY 65 window offers advantages in the speed and efficiency of manufacturing, making the FY 65 windows a modern and intelligent window solution. Steven Henderson, Design Director at Glasshus said: “One of the Technal’s main advantages is the versatility of the system, as MX Visible Grid is suitable for most applications. I’m really impressed with the finished look of the building – with the different variants of green in the glass atrium, it has a really stunning and unique outer appearance.” Jason Pink, Construction Director at BAM commented: “We often use Technal products because they are of a high quality and good value for money. We’ve had exceptional feedback from everyone since the project was completed. The building is very impressive both externally and internally.” n For further information visit www.technal.com/en/uk

De Montfort University uses Solstice Pods to create collaborative learning spaces
De Montfort University standardises on Mersive Technology to enable wireless content sharing throughout the campus Over 50 Solstice Pods at the University provide students, staff and disabled users with technology that enables more engaging, productive group collaboration Technologies, a leader in wireless content sharing and collaboration solutions, announced that De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, United Kingdom, has deployed Solstice Pods in over 50 rooms and workspaces as part of its continued investment in providing a modern and inspiring environment for its staff and students. Installing this technology throughout the University allows users to wirelessly share content on collaborative displays enabling both teachers and students in a single room to easily share information from any device enabling a more creative and inclusive learning environment. An initial installation of 5 Solstice Pods was undertaken in the Leicester Castle Business School building, which is a historic, Grade 1 listed building that was formerly a criminal law court. Out of respect for the fabric of the building, any solution needs to be wireless. The lecture theatres also have a unique format due to the building’s previous use, with students seated in a semicircle around the lecturer – which facilitates a ‘Harvard Style’ for teaching. DMU installed Solstice to deliver an improved AV experience where users can switch between laptops, phones or tablets to easily share and display information wirelessly, improving workflows and promoting more creative discussions. De Montfort University has one of the largest populations of disabled students in the country, and Solstice Pods have helped to support these students in achieving their full potential. Working within Disability Advice and Support in Student Welfare, Leanne Herbert, DMU’s Disability Officer, supports autistic students including those with Asperger’s, and works closely with different teams and agencies to ensure the appropriate support is available. Since the installation of Solstice Pods, Leanne said, “It has been fantastic for meetings and I’m looking forward to using this with the students to easily demonstrate the set up for the “Brain in Hand” app, an assistive personalised technology that we offer our 200 autistic students. The app requires the demonstration of a website alongside the mobile app, and with Mersive technology in place, I can switch between both really easily and well.” Dr. Nathan Jeffery, Multi Media Services Manager at De Montfort University, said, “I have been interested in wireless display technologies for five years, and after researching, using and experiencing many different technologies, have decided
10
Summer 2018 CAMPUS
to standardise on using Solstice Pods for future projects at the University. There are many wireless solutions on the market, but not all of them offer a collaborative approach with such an intuitive and easy to use interface. We have already installed over 50 throughout the campus in a wide array of scenarios as they have proved they provide an innovative and creative way for everyone in the room to easily display and share content for everyone to see. The easy management of any technology across the whole estate is also crucial and the intuitive dashboard allows access to control any or all of the pods within the wireless umbrella via a single point of access and a single mouse click.” “At DMU, we are focussed on providing an inclusive and stimulating learning environment that recognises the value of co-creation, and Mersive Solstice Pods helps us realise this,” continued Dr. Jeffery. “A member of staff from The Faculty of Business and Law uses a wheelchair and this technology has also provided them with the ability to move freely around the classroom and present from anywhere within the space, rather than having to be tethered to the technology at the front of the room with wires. The teaching space also has a low level height adjustable whiteboard that he is able to write on, with a camera that relays this content to the students in real time.” DMU’s new Vijay Patel building is the centrepiece of a £136 million Campus Transformation Project, bringing art and design together into a striking building that provides the space and facilities for students and staff to develop new ideas. The front of the building is adorned with a 76 square meter landscape LED video wall utilising a Mersive Solstice pod to share up-to-date videos, information and events within the public space. During open days, staff are able to throw relevant content up onto the wall in real time as the need arises – though this facility is carefully controlled using a password. The Collaboratory is a multi-use space where technology and creativity come together to support and develop innovative approaches to learning and teaching. Often used for staff training and development sessions, it is particularly useful for running small group workshop style activities, and the inclusion of the Mersive Solstice Pods to incorporate an interactive digital component, enhances what can be delivered in the space. DMU has also ensured the content presented on the Mersive device can be captured by the lecture capture solution (DMU Replay) within any of these classroom spaces, adding to the Unified Design for Learning (UDL) initiative and ensuring that students can review the teaching experience independent of the device used for presentation. Mersive Founder and CTO Christopher Jaynes added, “It is really exciting to see how customers grow with Solstice once they have put it in. We are excited about the way that De Montfort University is using Solstice to transform its teaching to all students, and particularly to improve its support of disabled students and staff. We are actively working with Dr Jeffery and his team to help them make full use of new capabilities of Solstice as we roll them out.” “We are a dynamic University and Mersive is helping us to achieve our vision of providing the highest quality spaces for academics and students and offer them the opportunity to think outside the box,” concluded Dr Jeffery. n For further information please visit www.mersive.com
New Altro Orchestra earns a gold star at primary school Brand new Altro Orchestra™ soft vinyl flooring is proving a big hit with pupils at The Lanner Primary School, in Cornwall, who have reported a significant improvement in acoustics and comfort. The Acting Head Teacher, said: “We are always looking for ways to make cost effective improvements to the school for the safety and comfort of pupils and to enhance their learning and playing experiences where we can.” “We fitted new Altro Orchestra flooring in the main school hall to reduce reverberation and boost overall comfort, and we are delighted with the results. The children have told us that it’s more comfortable to sit on than the flooring it replaced, and that the acoustics in the hall are much better.” Altro Orchestra has been engineered to create the ideal environment to learn and live, specifically for applications such as schools and hospitals where comfort and sound reduction are paramount. For primary schools such as Lanner, the new flooring offers the ultimate flexible, multi-purpose surface that can be used for both study and play areas throughout the school. At 2.85mm thick, Altro Orchestra offers superb comfort underfoot, making life easier on the feet of both pupils and staff and, as the children have reported, it’s very comfortable to sit on too. In addition, the low residual indentation of the flooring means furniture and equipment can be used and moved flexibly
without leaving tell-tale marks. At the same time, the integrated impact sound insulation system cuts impact sound by up to 15dB. Specifying an acoustic flooring option, instead of a standard floor covering, can therefore improve the performance of space for children and those with hearing difficulties, and aid concentration, in addition to creating a more effective learning environment for teachers and support staff. With a palette of 40 colours and designs varying from calming neutrals reflecting tones of nature, to vibrant shades, Altro Orchestra allows the right atmosphere to be created every time. Lanner School selected the shade Guitar, a subtle green that creates a calm atmosphere. The flooring was installed by Eden Flooring & Interiors. n

Ego launches new whitepaper: lithium-ion battery versus petrol powered outdoor equipment Noisy. Dirty. Uncomfortable. Polluting. Not words usually associated with gardening, but terms regularly connected with petrol. A new whitepaper from EGO looks at the benefits of lithium-ion battery versus petrol powered outdoor equipment. Steve Roskell, marketing director (EMEA) of EGO comments: “In the world of professional landscaping and grounds maintenance, petrol has been the fuel of choice for over 100 years – mainly because there has been no viable challenger. Recently however, battery powered cordless equipment has begun to gain worldwide popularity and increased market share, signalling the most significant shift in the sector for decades.” There are four key factors driving this trend: health & safety, user comfort, the environment and economics, all outlined in a dedicated whitepaper commissioned by EGO, which looks at how to increase safety, productivity, sustainability and cost-
effectiveness in commercial gardening. The whitepaper provides extensive evidence of the potential risks posed by petrol to user health and the environment and the benefits of battery powered tools to company cashflow. Steve continues: “In each of these areas, the benefits of lithium-ion batteries over petrol are overwhelming. Moreover, the emergence of new generation batteries and equipment by global manufacturers such as EGO means that lithium-ion batteries can now match or even surpass the performance of petrol, without any of the drawbacks.” These were all considerations the brand had when designing its latest range of professional equipment, a range of tools that perform beyond the expectations of even the most challenging user. The new range consists of a hedge trimmer, blower, and grass strimmer – all using the unique EGO Power Plus Arc Lithium 56v battery or the new BAX1500 battery backpack. Displaying the key attributes of battery powered tools, the new EGO professional range is simpler, cleaner, quieter and with less vibration than most of its petrol counterparts making it more comfortable to use. With lower running and maintenance costs, switching to EGO will lead to long term savings, without any down time or reduced productivity, making them ideal for facilities teams, and ground care professionals alike. n

ISG will build a new five-storey, concrete framed teaching block, extending to circa 161,000 sq ft of space. Constructed on a plot adjacent to the existing college buildings on campus, the state-ofthe art learning environment will accommodate an enlarged intake of up to 3,000 students when it opens at the end of 2019. Targeting a BREEAM excellent environmental performance rating, the new learning centre incorporates a full height atrium space, with internal wood cladding creating an impressive design aesthetic and playing a functional acoustic role in the building. Exposed concrete soffits and structural columns are a key design element, with rainscreen cladding and curtain walling to the structure’s façade. The striking building will become the college’s focal point for technology enabled teaching courses, and incorporates a full range of high-specification and advanced learning environments. Facilities include TV studios, a 3D prototyping fabrication laboratory (FabLab) and a digital golf studio. The building also supports the college’s aim to foster greater collaboration between

students, employers and the local community – with a range a business incubation spaces, a business lounge and community outreach facilities. The arts and hospitality and leisure courses will also be delivered within the teaching space, and ISG will create a 160-seat theatre and an art gallery, which will enable local artists and photographers to exhibit their work at the college. A 60 cover Silver Service dining chef’s academy, with full commercial kitchen and a bookable restaurant space will also be created, alongside a spa and wellness centre. Steven McGee, managing director for ISG’s Construction South business, commented: “The complexities of this project have ideally suited the Pagabo framework procurement route that was selected to bring this highly anticipated scheme to site. High-performing frameworks prove instrumental in fostering strong collaboration between project stakeholders, and our early engagement on the scheme has enabled us to interrogate the brief to drive efficiencies at every stage of the build process. “This is a beacon project for RuTC, kickstarting the wider redevelopment of its entire campus site and a key win for the ISG business, further demonstrating our education credentials on high profile schemes.” n For more information, please visit www.isgplc.com
‘Best practice’ guidelines update accommodate disabled students New ‘best practice’ guidelines have been published that, for the first time, specifically address disabled student accommodation . Simultaneously, Britain’s leading provider of disabled toileting solutions, Closomat, is announcing new developments that enable providers to comply, stylishly, with a unique package from specification, through fitting to future service & maintenance. The options help enable providers to meet the growing number of disabled students, which now represents almost 10% of the student population in the UK! BS8300:2018 Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment extends the remit of compliance covered under its predecessor BS8300:2009. The latest version is not specific to new build projects, and applies to all building types that require permanent sleeping accommodation for disabled people. It also, for the first time, incorporates a specific set of criteria for student accommodation bedrooms. Under the new guidelines, up to 4% of bedrooms should be wheelchair accessible, up to 1% of rooms should include a fixed track hoist system, and up to 5% should be easily adaptable for independent wheelchair use. If only one accessible bedroom is provided, it should include an accessible shower room, with the preferred solution being a level access shower with shower seat if required, and include a WC. The adaptable rooms should have the space and design features to allow for addition of grab rails, shower seats, with ceiling height to allow for a track hoist (2.4m). Closomat offers a range of contemporary ceiling track hoist systems that can be tailored to individual needs, enabling movement and transfer within a room, through to an en-suite, or beyond. In the bathroom, it can provide a stylish wall track system, that
integrates with a range of fixtures such as grab rails, heightadjustable or fixed washbasins, shower seats, enabling quick and easy adaptation to individual occupant needs. Its range of wash & dry toilets take accessibility into higher realms of inclusion and intimate hygiene, with contemporary styled floor- standing, wall-mounted and height adjustable variants. Wash and dry toilets have the added benefit of satisfying cultural and religious considerations, regardless of the enhanced hygiene they provide against conventional wiping. “Accessibility is a growing consideration in building design,” explains Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manager. “Disabled student numbers have increased by 56% in less than a decade, so it’s a sector that accommodation providers need to consider, and address. “As the new British Standard points out, because such accommodation is booked or reserved in advance, there is greater scope for it to be adapted correctly, as required, to suit an individual student. It goes so far as to advise that in effect a ‘show flat/ bedroom’ should be provided on build completion so people can asses how their requirement may be met!” Closomat’s website www.clos-o-mat.com is the ‘go to’ resource to help take the first steps towards efficient accessibility provision, including design guidance, white papers, CAD blocks, NBS specification clauses and case studies. The information represents the combined wealth of knowledge amassed from over 55 years’ helping disabled people optimise their dignity and independence in the bathroom, at home and away. n For more information, please visit www.clos-o-mat.com

Groundbreaking ceremony gets the £15.8 million renovation of historic Brookfield House The University of Leicester and Henry Boot Construction Ltd marked the official start of construction at the University’s Brookfield Campus with a traditional groundbreaking ceremony. The historic 19th century Brookfield House on London Road was once home to the original benefactor of the University, Thomas Fielding Johnson. The University is now giving the site a new lease of life. A comprehensive renovation of the site, including the main house, will be undertaken over the coming months to create a new home for the University’s School of Business. The newly named ‘Brookfield campus’ will boast a variety of teaching and social learning spaces. The University of Leicester School of Business was established in 2016, bringing together the outstanding expertise in Economics and Management to create a world class business school. The move to Brookfield will enable the School of Business to continue to thrive and develop a real sense of a community at a dedicated campus. In addition to works in the main house, the scheme will also see the removal of a 20th century extension and replacement with a much more architecturally sympathetic gabled building, which will provide a brand new lecture theatre and seminar rooms. The characterful stable block and courtyard area will also be restored using traditional materials. A key priority of the scheme is to open up views of the renovated historic house from London Road, which has been hidden from view in recent years by a high fence. The fence has now gone and will be replaced in time by herbaceous planting, so that the views of one of Leicester’s most interesting 19th century houses can be enjoyed by all.
A wider scheme of landscaping improvements will see further investment in the extensive grounds at Brookfield, including additional ornamental and tree planting, a new pond and a network of paths throughout the site so that students, staff and visitors can enjoy the green and peaceful environment. Brita Sread, Director of Estates and Campus Services at the University of Leicester, commented: “The University is leading on a number of development projects, but the Brookfield project is special because of the opportunity it provides to give this historic house a new lease of life. “We’re very pleased to welcome Henry Boot Construction to the team and see the works get underway. The finished scheme is going to provide an exceptional environment for the University of Leicester School of Business to flourish, as well as offering a welcoming environment for the wider community.” The University’s investment at Brookfield is part of a transformative campus wide £500 million programme of investment that will improve student facilities as well as public spaces over the next decade. The ambition is to create an environment that truly supports teaching, research and an unrivalled student experience. Tony Shaw, Operations Director at Henry Boot Construction Limited, added: “We are delighted to be commencing on site at the Brookfield Campus. This is a very important project for the University of Leicester School of Business and we will work closely as a team to deliver a high quality educational facility that everyone can be proud of.” n

New Dulux trade plus range provides warmth for Tonbridge School staff house Dulux Trade has provided an expert coating specification to deliver improved thermal performance for a detached Victorian property located in Tonbridge School, Kent. Looking for improvements, both internally and externally, the new Dulux Trade Plus Range offered the ideal solution. The four-bedroom Victorian property houses a member of Tonbridge School’s teaching staff and family onsite. As an older building, there was a growing concern surrounding its thermal efficiency. Made from solid wall construction, the property suffered from damp as well as extensive heat loss through the walls, reducing the inside temperature significantly. Tonbridge School was keen to find a product that could help improve the thermal performance – without disturbing the existing solid wall structure. In response to this brief, the Dulux Trade expert team proposed a bespoke specification which included the newly launched Dulux Trade Plus range. The new Plus range offers innovative coatings designed specifically to help improve the thermal efficiency of the UK’s aging housing stock. Dulux Trade Plus Thermacoat+ is a revolutionary 3-part coating system comprised of an innovative basecoat with insulating properties, a leveling fiberglass fleece and a Dulux Trade Plus Smooth & Protect+ finish. Applied to all of the interior externally facing walls of the property, the Thermacoat+ system is just 6mm thick once complete; making it an ideal solution for this project, as maximising space was key to the refurbishment – all whilst reducing heat loss through walls, improving room warm up times and resident comfort. With the Dulux Trade Plus Thermacoat+ new to the market, it was important that the painting subcontractor and appliers on the project had both the skills and the knowledge to successfully apply it. As such, they attended a training day at the purpose built Dulux Academy in Slough. This offered an opportunity for the appliers to gain insight on the details of Thermacoat+ and best practice to follow when applying it to ensure the best possible finish and performance. In order to further enhance the thermal performance of the building, a second product from the new Dulux Trade Plus range was used. Due to the property previously suffering from damp, the school’s project team required a product that would help prevent rain penetrating the exterior walls and creating damp inside the property. SmartShield+ is an invisible waterproof coating that reduces water ingress on exterior brickwork when compared to untreated substrates and thus provided an ideal solution. “Once onsite, we were particularly impressed by the fast spray application method of SmartShield+,” commented Tonbridge School. “The application was really easy and fast, meaning that the project could be completed efficiently. Initially, we were concerned that there may be a sheen left behind by SmartShield+, however once applied it was completely invisible and we are delighted that the building can be protected whilst maintaining its traditional look and feel. We’ve been impressed by the level of involvement of the Dulux Trade team, from delivering crucial training to attending site during application.” Tony Westgarth, Technical Support Manager at Dulux Trade commented: “This was a particularly exciting project for me as it was my first opportunity to work with the Dulux Trade Plus range onsite. Internally, once the Thermacoat+ was finished with Dulux Trade Diamond Matt there were no visible alterations to the inside of the property – leaving an exceptional finish.”

any higher education institutions are, or aspire to be, national leaders and role models in the quality of their teaching and research. And of course, the best of our universities think beyond the city and beyond the border to the global audience, developing reputations that secure international attention. In an ever more interconnected world, our universities and their staff and students work, learn, think and collaborate globally. We’re all global citizens. And on no subject is this more true than on sustainability – an essential aspect of leadership thinking from the geopolitical level to the level of corporate governance and management planning. For more and more of us we want to work and act sustainably because it’s the right thing to do – we know the human outcomes of living beyond the planet’s means. Sustainability is in our heads, but it’s in our hearts too.
20
Summer 2018 CAMPUS
So, what’s the framework we’re thinking within when we talk about sustainability and choosing to operate sustainably as organisations in higher education? For many, the essential background framework to our individual and corporate efforts is the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals or SDGs, launched in 2015 and providing a system within which all countries, rich or poor, can work. The 17 goals cover the widest range, from ending hunger to ensuring the welfare of our seas and rivers, from ending inequalities to making our production and consumption as responsible as we can. As individuals or even as organisations some of them might seem remote, but as a whole-planet response the SDGs have the ability to inspire and guide us to where our efforts can make most difference. There’s no better place to start when thinking about sustainability in higher education.
AUDE launched its Green Scorecard in 2016 as a way to support member institutions think about sustainability at the corporate level, and within 12 months more than 100 UK HEIs were using the tool. In summer 2018, in collaboration with The EAUC and Arup, and with the support of the former HEFCE, AUDE has launched the Sustainability Leadership Scorecard (SLS), a significant expansion on our previous work, and a tool that aims to transform the way organisations think about, plan around, and communicate about their corporate sustainability work. As a whole issue sustainability can seem mind-boggling in its complexity. An individual, or a team, may hold responsibility for delivering against sustainable objectives. Or that responsibility may be spread between teams, with different reporting lines, and historical decisions on the management of aspects of the issue
may add to the complexity, making a whole-organisation view difficult to achieve. The SLS acts to counter these difficulties. At the heart of the SLS as a tool sit the UN’s SDGs – users can map their activities against those goals, as a way of demonstrating to senior leaders, to student bodies and beyond that their work is credible, focused in its intent and measurable in its impact. And all of that is vital in energising the institution behind the chosen direction of travel. So how does the SLS work? User inputs to the online system can include a variety of existing tools – the aim is not to replicate but to bring together existing work to give that “whole organisation view”. So, inputs might include the existing Green Scorecard, NUS Green Impact, BREEAM, Food for Life or ISO 50001 (on energy), for instance. Users are supported to think about every aspect of a planning cycle, from risk and staff engagement, to waste and biodiversity, and score their work against activity areas including policy,
measurement and communication. The outputs are mapped onto a wheel diagram, easily shared and understood. Intended in a collaborative spirit, the SLS allows users to benchmark against other institutions, record a narrative of progress, and establish their own priority areas – all with the focus on learning and improvement as an organisation. The top ten institutions within each priority area are highlighted as a way of suggesting potential routes for sharing of approaches and peer support. The focus throughout is on helping the user focus on priority areas that will have the most impact, support for goal-setting and learning, and on ease of communication around a complex subject. The Sustainability Leadership Scorecard was developed with extensive support from HE institutions to make sure it is a practical working tool that is genuinely easy to use. Different universities are inevitably
at different stages of their progress and have chosen to focus their energies on the UN SDGs that are most meaningful to them. For instance, University A might have identified the “Sustainable Cities and Communities” SDG as a focus, stated the “Significant” level of impact as their aspiration, and seen their actual impact so far measured at “Medium”. Clear action plans can emerge from that. The tool rates their work on policy and strategy to be good, while highlighting that work is still to be done on implementation. For University B, the SLS shows the strength of their stakeholder engagement work but also the need to improve measurement and links to the curriculum. Again, actionable plans can emerge. The universities working with us developing the SLS found the discussions across teams themselves to be immensely useful in establishing the direction of future travel and in identifying performance gaps. The g Scorecard provided the process for

an objective review of each of the sustainability indicators with the visual representation of performance helping to crystallise current achievement and future planning. Jane White, Executive Director of AUDE, thinks of the tool as the way to harness the energy of a university. “Sustainability is complex. And taking the right decisions can be complex – senior leaders have struggled to see all the relevant information in the same place before. The SLS co-ordinates across systems and standards and teams, so your decision makers can be confident they understand the complexity and can steer the ship towards the right goals – backed by the UN. Sustainability may often sit within the remit of our members, university Directors of Estates and their teams, but this tool cuts across narrow work boundaries

to give the breadth of thinking across a whole institution that is needed. The SLS will transform the way universities deliver against our sustainability aspirations.” Iain Patton, EAUC CEO, said: “By integrating into one powerful tool the sector’s key environmental and sustainability data-sets, standards and accreditations, the Sustainability Leadership Scorecard is making a
huge difference to the way universities capture, improve and report their societal performance. And it is doing so in a way that Vice Chancellors, students and other stakeholders can easily see the positive impact that their institution is making on society.” n For more information visit

n Multiple entry points are the biggest access control challenge affecting schools (90%) n Nearly all architects are familiar with Secured by Design standards (95%) n 71% of refurbishment specifications are identical to the original ones Today Jacksons Fencing, the UK perimeter security manufacturer and specialist, releases insights into architects’ views on school safety from its report ‘Protecting the Future’. Taken alongside teachers’ perspectives, the report highlights significant differences between architects and school management as well as some reassuring common ground. On average, almost two thirds of architects know of schools being affected by fencing and gate issues (60%). While a similar amount of head teachers have commissioned new access solutions at least once (63%) and over three quarters have had their perimeter inspected within the past five years (80%), these problems are clearly not being resolved. The majority of architects (71%) find that school security refurbishments use the original specifications with some value engineering while a significant number know of schools down specifying to save cost (17%). This is despite head teachers’ greatest concerns being unauthorised exits and entrances (30% and 25%), both of which can

Jacksons Euroguard® Double Leaf Gates and Fencing, Northwood School, London be prevented with well-designed and specified fencing and gates. Specification evasion Architects identify budget as the greatest challenge when installing school fencing (84%), followed by restricted installation times (48%) and working where children are present (39%). The high number of schools keeping the same specifications or down specifying may be a reflection of this concern for cost and minimum disruption. A perimeter’s price tag is not the most significant concern for schools, however. Performance is the highest priority (73%) for teachers, followed closely by security ratings and accredited products (68%). These come ahead of both lifetime and initial costs (64% and 59% respectively). Setting the standards Recent bomb threats sent to schools across the UK reinforced the crucial role
that school staff play in protecting pupils from harm.[1] Head teachers’ identify that creating a positive learning environment (86%) and keeping the school community safe (82%) as the most important parts of their positions. Ensuring their security solutions meet industry standards is one way of fulfilling both these aims. A third of architects are seeing Secured by Design (SBD) and LPS 1175 standards increasingly specified (31%). This is complemented with 95% being familiar with SBD. While change is on the horizon, there is work to be done. Currently under half of architects know about LPS 1175 (47%). While head teachers are concerned about the safety of their pupils, 39% don’t know where to go to find out more about school security and access control. They do, however, have some awareness of safety guidelines, with half being familiar with the recommended height for school fences. A similar number know
of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) guidelines, which apply primarily to playgrounds. An inside perspective Overall, architects’ views on school security are in line with teachers, with 32% and 29% respectively saying that they acknowledge weak points in the perimeter. There is also agreement between both parties about which safety issues are afflicting schools the most: multiple entrances, having difficult to see areas and more than one building. Architects, however, are more cognisant of these problems than teachers, with a 40% average difference between their responses. This disparity was especially marked where 72% of architects said that aging fencing is an issue, compared to 16% of teachers. Security Consultant at Jacksons Fencing Cris Francis comments: “While there is g a healthy level of agreement between
CAMPUS
Summer 2018 25
architects and teachers on what the key school security issues are, our research reveals some concerning differences. Despite schools prioritising the performance of their fencing and gates, architects are up against stringent budgets that lead to maintaining outdated solutions or down specifying. Schools need to find a way of balancing cost with adequately ensuring children’s safety. Part of the problem might be that without a professional understanding of design and security, school staff can’t appreciate the impact of perimeter issues to the same extent as architects. “Architects also have a greater awareness of safety standards and LPS 1175 certified products. By using their expertise to help schools choose the most appropriate solution for their specific risks and needs, they can help safeguard staff and students alike from future harm.”

The capital is flying high with over 101,000,000 posts alone featuring #London. The pulse of the city’s tourist trade is beating faster than ever too. In 2017, a record-breaking 19 million people took some time out in the Big Smoke. This
year the figures are set to rocket once again, and the city’s attractions will be ready and waiting for their close up. As the cityscape continues to evolve the differences between the sharp, towering skyscrapers of modern London with older fixtures like the Tower of London are giving keen photographers plenty to snap. From a range of galleries and
museums to the tallest building in London, a key aim of lighting designers is to work with architects to create lighting solutions that make the buildings a great spectacle, day and night. With tourist numbers increasing year on year there is a need to implement systems that are future fit with no need for comprehensive renovation that disrupts the busy tourism calendar. Some of the most visited attractions in London are its eclectic mix of art galleries, each containing iconic works from past and present. Nations pride themselves on the art collections they hold dear, presenting them in both cutting edge and classical architecture that continues to attract millions of visitors every year. The experience of visitors is dependent on the environment, and lighting is a crucial component of that. These spaces can benefit from intelligent lighting controls and user-friendly interfaces, created to support impressive lighting designs, showcasing striking architecture and the art collections they protect. The National Portrait Gallery is home to the world’s largest collection of portraits from the middle ages to the present day. Over a six-year period the gallery has made the transition from tungsten halogen lamps to LED lighting. With two million visitors every year, its packed schedule can make any

Lighting designers were tasked with creating a modern, comfortable ambience which can adapt to specific features of different displays and adjust to reveal particular features and details on the portraits. The goal throughout a project like this is to balance quality with energy efficiency while displaying each piece of art in the way the artist intended. Natural lighting must be kept to a minimum to avoid UV damage to the paintings, some of which are thousands of years old. Research suggests the most pleasant lighting environment is one that at
least mimics natural light. By using sensors in the lighting control system, you are able to carefully monitor the brightness of natural light coming through the windows, whilst tracking the sun’s brightness and measure the sky’s brilliance, adjusting artificial light to save energy and to reduce overbrightness and glare. With approximately 60% of energy savings, work has continued throughout the gallery and into the offices to create a modern and comfortable place to work and visit. to accurately reveal reds in paintings such as the striking portrait of the Duke of Marlborough”. Another popular London gallery is the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace. In a similar way to the National Portrait Gallery, the need is to present each work in the way the artist intended. Of course, as the Royal Family’s own art collection, the gallery attracts millions of visitors a year. The gallery first opened in 1962 and in 2002, to coincide with the Golden Jubilee, the gallery tripled in size. Now around 450 works are on display at any one time. Much like the National Portrait Gallery, each painting requires a bespoke display that celebrates the work and allows it to linger in the mind of all of those who visit it. Each light fitting is easily adjusted to fit the need of the exhibits in rotation and the use of LED’s mean the fixtures with function efficiently for years to come. While London boasts an illustrious collection of galleries and museums, some of the most ambitious lighting and architecture projects are also some of the most visited places in the city. The Shard is one the newest additions to the London skyline but has fast-become a must-see for tourists, with over 2 million annual visitors. The smart lighting illuminates each floor of the Shade with bespoke solutions. Accommodating everything from the restaurants to the residential floors, and of course the much-loved viewing deck. At night-

he association promotes and supports Higher Education Estates professional staff within all engineering functions, from design, operation, maintenance and projects, to facilities, energy and sustainability. Originally set up in 1970, by a small group of university engineers, the association was started with the vision of creating a “networked union of like-minded people”. Primarily to help engineers resolve challenges, to share knowledge between institutions and to promote training and career development amongst university engineers, the association has held their annual conference every year since the inaugural conference at Salford University in 1971. The conference provides opportunities to learn from a wide variety of speakers across different topics, from within and outside of the sector. Speakers provide honest accounts of approaches they have tried, including what worked and what didn’t work, which delegates can learn from and take back to their institution to help in their day-to-day role. The programme will provide key insights that will assist in providing cost effective operations and maintenance services, managing the risks of varied and complex estates, whilst maintaining compliance across many aspects of estate
management. The programme has been designed so that attendees can tailor their experience to suit their interests and needs, including speakers from HSE, KSG, Guardian Electrical and many more. There are more parallel sessions than ever before, along with relevant plenaries and case studies. There will be motivational plenary led by esteemed speaker and Professor of Psychology Adrian Furnham, who will deliver a session on Performance Management Systems. In addition to this we are pleased to announce that Robert Llewellyn, British actor, comedian and writer, best known for his role in sci-fi hit Red Dwarf and as a presenter of the TV engineering gameshow Scrapheap
Challenge, will be the after-dinner speaker at the Gala Dinner. The conference content contributes to members’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which is a requirement of many respective professional bodies. Stephen Dunne, AUE Chair and Conference Host, who is the Engineering Services Manager at Southampton Solent University, is particularly looking forward to the conference; “Our annual conference is a key date in our member’s calendar providing the opportunity to network with fellow AUE members and build new collaborations to share experiences, problems and solutions. we have a selection of high quality speakers presenting across a wide range of estate management areas, with the keynote speech from the HSE. The vast range of this year’s exhibitors build on successful previous conferences and will provide much sought-after specialist advice and support to those attending. It is the event where everything is in one place for University Engineers to keep up to date with current industry practices and take new initiatives back to their institutions as they contribute to providing a positive student experience and learning environment to the wider Higher Education sector.” There are a number of networking opportunities available throughout the course of the conference, where attendees will be able to catch up with colleagues from other institutions and meet some new faces too. On Wednesday afternoon, the conference provides delegates a chance to join some engineering excursions to the National Motor Museum Beaulieu and the Southampton Geothermal Heating Company. In addition to these there will be an excursion to the Ringwood Brewery, as well as a boat trip departing from Ocean Village. Two conference dinners will take place, with the Informal Dinner held on-site at the university and the conference Gala Dinner taking place at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton Solent Football Club. Often it is the chance meetings and discussions at these social occasions which act as a catalyst for further engagement after the conference – there is always a huge

CAMPUS ACCESS
Streamlining access
Prominent University enhances campus life with genetec IP access control
T
he University of Hull Secures and Streamlines Access to Over 30 Buildings on Campus by Upgrading to IP Access
Control. Every student wants to enjoy a safe and vibrant campus life. That’s why the University of Hull in the United Kingdom continues to upgrade its security. With over 30 buildings on two campuses, the University knows that when its students and staff safely move from the classroom and the library, to the sports complex and the dorms, they’re able to focus on what matters most – getting good grades

and enjoying life. And, that creates a dynamic university experience that keeps everyone happy and enrollment up. Creating a better sense of campus safety Big upgrades require planning and time. A while back, the University of Hull began its migration to IP security by implementing the Genetec™ Omnicast™ video surveillance system. Years later, a failing mag-striped access control system became the focus. Not only was the technology outdated, but acquiring replacement parts was
becoming more difficult and expensive. The goal was to balance accessibility and openness on campus. For that, the team wanted an access control system that could be expanded to one building or door at a time. They also wanted an open system, so they could choose their own hardware, keep costs down, and possibly add new applications to enhance the campus experience. After considering five solutions, the University of Hull chose Security Center, the unified security platform from Genetec Inc to secure one campus and one external Halls of Residence. The flexible platform unifies IP

Building a campus that’s easy to get around Getting around campus is a breeze. That’s because the University of Hull has upgraded one campus and one external Halls of Residence — a total of 317 doors— to the Synergis™ IP access control system of Security Center. The security team monitors these doors and 225 cameras using the unified platform, all from a central control room. Facilities, Human Resources, and Student Administration departments handle most
access control tasks, including requests from over 50,000 cardholders. Since keeping costs down was a priority, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) team chose to implement the Synergis Cloud Link. It’s an intelligent IP controller that supports non-proprietary access control hardware. According to Gary Moore, Platform Services, ICT Department at the University of Hull, “Instead of adding edge devices at each door, it was much more cost effective for us to use the Synergis Cloud Link when there were multiple doors in a building. It prevented us from having to run new Cat-5 cabling
to every single door. Without the Synergis Cloud Link, going IP would have been tremendously more laborious and expensive.” Thanks to the open platform, life on campus keeps getting better. The university chose the MIFARE® DESFire® EV1 card technology from HID Global. For students living on campus, support for HID Mobile Access credentials means that there is no more fussing with cards to get into their dorms. “Students have their phone glued to hands,” said Moore. “So why not give them convenient access to their dorms by using their phones?”. Using Bluetooth connectivity, the secure application lets student unlock a door with a simple swipe on their phone or by tapping their phone to a reader. All credentials and access privileges are easily managed within Security Center. The simpler way to welcome new students and guests Issuing cards to 8000 students each semester gets hectic. Using the Genetec g Software Development Kit (SDK), the

University has simplified the enrollment process. The ICT team developed a custom integration between Security Center and its student and staff records system, ensuring all information is automatically synced in real-time. “We have set up rules where ‘if the user is in this class/program, give them access to this group’,” explained Moore. “Another way we have managed this is with batches. To do this, we grouped all the chemistry students’ records together and selected ‘import this batch’ and give them all the same ‘access privileges’. These features have contributed to huge time savings.” Ensuring the right privileges is not only for security. It also helps the university better manage program resources. For instance, first-year Science students

won’t have access to second-year student labs with specialized equipment, products, and chemicals. Visitors are also getting a first-rate experience on campus. Staff uses the Visitor Management feature of Security Center to issue temporary cards to conference attendees, independent researchers or contractors. “It’s been very easy-to-use, and gives our visitors the freedom to roam without putting our assets or people at risk,” said Moore. Expanding into the future with the unified platform At the University of Hull, expansions are ongoing. As a new Health building and Sports Pavillion are near completion, the team will add another 70 doors, 30 cameras and an intercom integration using
the Sipelia Communications Management module. The University is also upgrading to the latest version of Security Center to access features that keep its system fully redundant and secure. “Having Genetec Security Center at our university has improved the collaboration across all of our departments, helping to collectively better secure our campus. More than that, it’s enhanced our campus experience in countless ways, giving staff, students and guests the freedom to enjoy everything our university has to offer. At the end of the day, that’s what securing our campus is all about,” concluded Moore. n For further information visit
