COVER STORY

Pitch perfect

Leveraging IoT for long-term stadium security by Fabio Marti, vice president, marketing, Security & Safety Things

A

s the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to grow, billions of devices are networked each year. New technology developments have ushered in a new breed of smarter and more versatile security cameras that can not only provide data-rich video but analyse that data and trigger appropriate actions through the use of smart apps on the device. By effectively making them into IoT sensors, smart cameras can be flexibly equipped and re-equipped with applications used to address COVID-19 related needs at stadiums and other event spaces – then repurposed to address other operational needs.

4 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

Many stadiums are already putting into place new solutions to help them increase safety and security procedures, while further enhancing the visitor and fan experience. In the stadium space, smart cameras assist event managers and facility staff in gaining a greater understanding of attendee behavior, opening up new opportunities to optimise the event process and dynamically allocate resources on game days and during other large public events. Once COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted, these stadiums will be ahead of the global curve in ensuring their readiness to reopen and that every fan visit is a safe experience. Amsterdam’s famed Johan Cruijff

ArenA is one such facility that has adopted this readiness approach. In cooperation with Security & Safety Things (S&ST), the ArenA has installed a number of smart surveillance cameras throughout the stadium to optimise ArenA operations, increase visitor security and privacy and enhance overall fan experience. Operations staff at the ArenA are accustomed to being ahead of the curve. Located in the heart of Amsterdam and home to Dutch soccer champion team AFC Ajax, the ArenA also operates the Amsterdam Innovation ArenA (AIA), an internationally renowned living laboratory established by the ArenA

and the City of Amsterdam to enable testing and evaluation of innovative stadium and smart city solutions. A series of smart cameras running the S&ST operating system are installed in key areas throughout the stadium that are equipped with Artificial Intelligence-enabled video analytic applications. Once the ArenA reopens, staff will be able to mine valuable operational insights from the camera such as real-time visitor flow, crowd behaviour, parking conditions and other insights that will help make crucial real-time decisions to manage and optimise these conditions to ensure the safety and privacy of fans, players and game-day personnel. COVID-19 related uses for smart surveillance When the ArenA reopens, crowd detection analytics will monitor social distancing compliance and visitor flow around entrances and food or merchandise kiosks. License plate recognition cameras will assist with real time occupancy monitoring for parking and traffic flow optimization. Queue detection applications can be employed to reduce visitor wait times at food and beverage stalls by directing fans to less busy areas and by providing the insights required to optimise staffing levels at peak times. In one specific area, a camera also provides the ability for visitors to provide feedback about their stadium experience in an anonymous and contact-free way by detecting the visual of a “thumbs-up” or “thumbs-down” from a visitor, collecting only the rating without disrupting people flow. Crowd detection applications are also able to detect people and the distances between them. Data from these applications offer a picture of crowd density across an entire venue, which is particularly ideal for larger stadiums such as the ArenA. Such a “big picture” can be used to adjust venue layout in order to remove choke points where attendees may get too close to one another. By placing smart cameras near kiosks, ticket counters, food and beverage counters and other potential points of congregation, managers can determine if increased signage that encourages social distancing is needed.

One crucial concern for the ArenA, as well as stadiums around the world, is ensuring these technological solutions can be operated in compliance with local and national privacy regulations. By design, the S&ST supported cameras use powerful processors that analyse the images directly on the camera and can be configured to collect and transmit only the footage about relevant events, such as when a long queue is forming, groups of people gather too closely, or individuals are not wearing face coverings as required. This reduces the processing of visitors’ personal information to an absolute minimum as opposed to a traditional set-up where all footage is transmitted and centrally processed at all times. While these applications can assist with COVID-19 related compliance, the ArenA plans to leverage the camera’s capabilities far

beyond these short-term reopening needs and use them to gather valuable business intelligence and improve visitor experience. There are numerous potential uses for JCA and other stadiums, since this new breed of cameras can be flexibly equipped and re-equipped with video analytics applications from an Application Store that features already close to 90 applications. The applications cover a wide range of use cases, with more being added every month as innovation in computer vision progresses at a fast pace. Maintain stadium safety and security Smart cameras installed both inside and outside stadiums can help detect suspicious or aggressive visitor behavior before it becomes a potential incident. Fitted with powerful processors, the cameras continuously analyse video data and

check it for particular movement patterns or detect potential escalations between opposing teams by analyzing visitor clothing, either inside the stadium or in the parking lot during pre-game festivities. If these activities are spotted in time, de-escalation measures can immediately be taken. Because of their on-device intelligence, smart cameras can detect individuals holding weapons and selectively upload related imagery to help security personnel or law enforcement assess and address the situation. Manage the flow of visitor parking Cameras outfitted with parking management apps and license plate recognition technology (LPR) help to direct traffic flow by detecting available spaces or recognizing when a particular parking area is full. They can also assist in controlling the flow of traffic at peak times to prevent jams and long waits at exits or recognise the vehicles of VIPs or season ticket holders and route them accordingly to the appropriate 6 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

parking lot. This technology can also reduce or eliminate the use of parking gates and ticketing machines, instead using LPR technology to track entry and exit times and integrate with parking payment systems for digital payments. This allows for a more frictionless, automatic process that can reduce staffing needs within parking management as well as minimize costs related to the hardware purchase and maintenance of the parking gates and ticketing devices. Reduce waiting times at entrances and restrooms In a manner similar to parking management, the flow of visitors inside stadiums can be assessed and controlled. Smart cameras analyse visitor behavior in real time and assist in predicting large numbers of visitors in standstill areas such as queues for restrooms, concessions or fan merchandise, making it possible to divert visitors to less busy areas and prevent congestion and gathering, or long wait times. This

can also reduce the number of crowd outbursts, improve public safety by monitoring entry and exits, as well as securing cash handling procedures during events. While many stadium facilities will be implementing technologies designed to mitigate risk from the COVID-19 pandemic, investing in smart surveillance cameras that can be repurposed later enables them to design a sustainable system with robust application offerings for all types of scenarios. The key is to invest in this technology today to have the flexibility when it will be needed the next time. Stadium operators should look to select a camera system that enables them to continually harness emerging video analytics capabilities that help maximise event attendee satisfaction, enhance operations and increase security and safety. PRODUCT & INDUSTRY NEWS

Professional security business chooses Incedo™ Business to manage their own access control Another large survey confirms the growing importance of integration across building security functions. According to the Wireless Access Control Report 2021*, “95% [of security professionals] cited system integration [of access control] with other building/ security management functions to be ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ important” for the coming five years. Extensive expertise in the security sector made Plexus’ procurement team aware of this growing need for connectivity across functions — including access control. Plexus managers sought a more flexible access system for their own head office in Swansea, Wales. Alongside integrated control, Plexus prioritized modern access control with lower maintenance costs than their current system, as well as the potential to be operated securely from the cloud. Any new installation should offer the option to further scale — in any direction — in the future. They require a broad choice of wireless and wired door devices and readers for multiple types of opening — and of course a straightforward upgrade path for both hardware and software. ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions’ Incedo Business platform is now running at Plexus. Installing wireless locks, readers and controllers from the broad ASSA ABLOY range was fast and simple, streamlining their switch to Incedo Business. “Hardware architecture is well manufactured, and this goes hand-in-hand with software that has fantastic ease of use,” says Marcus Elphick, Operations Director at Plexus Fire and Security. Coming soon: fully featured cloud management With keyless locking and Incedo Business management software, Plexus managers control exactly who goes where around their offices. They can set times when defined user groups may open specific doors. It keeps staff moving and safe without the hassle of physical keys. The “new software has been seamless, much simpler and [with a] common sense approach to

8 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

structure,” says Marcus Elphick. Incedo Business software is intuitive to operate from any PC. The entire Incedo platform is fully flexible and modular, allowing Plexus to add more locks or change management software options whenever they need. They are already planning to extend control: remote sites, entrance gates and warehouse access control will be covered, too. “We have been so pleased with the system and its capabilities,” he adds. Plexus aim to quickly upgrade to new Incedo Business Cloud management, which offers them real-time 24/7 access from anywhere, and for a greater number of doors, as they look to expand coverage to more sites. “Incedo’s integrated access control platform already delivers connectivity and convenience,” says Stephanie Ordan, VP Digital and Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEA. “Now it delivers in the cloud, too. Incedo keeps premises secure and filters access intelligently, to manage the ever-changing movement of people — from anywhere.” “Your business is not static, and there is no reason why your security should be.” “Incedo’s system management options scale from entry level up to cloud-based administration,” adds Kevin Hoare, Incedo Product Unit Director at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEA. “You can manage multiple sites and third-party integrations, including security solutions like CCTV. Scale up and down, add or remove hardware and credentials on demand — or switch system management options — all within your single environment. Migration between local and cloud management is always seamless in any direction, ensuring total flexibility for your business.” Whatever the 2020s bring next, Incedo gives security the flexibility to adapt. Dallmeier introduces new generation of “Picoline” ultracompact fixed dome and varifocal box cameras The capabilities of miniature surveillance cameras are growing constantly – this is why for more than twelve years “the little ones” have also been among the most popular products made by the German manufacturer Dallmeier. With the new Dallmeier Picoline 5050 series, users in various industries can enjoy the benefits of a camera system which delivers 5 MP performance in an exceptionally compact format. Intelligent functions offer further added value. The cameras are available in in-ceiling mount, surface mounted and box housings. The external diameter of the surface-mounted variant is barely 93 mm. The number of customers who are looking for IP camera systems which combine value and durability with extensive functionality is increasing apace. The cameras of Dallmeier’s Picoline series are developed and manufactured entirely in Germany and are equipped with an H.265 decoder and a high-resolution image sensor with excellent light sensitivity. They are able to deliver detailed colour images with optimal memory and network efficiency even in low light conditions. The HDR function offers significantly more details in images with high dynamics than the classic digital WDR. Other special features include the combination of video analysis and search functions, the “SmartBackfill” technology to compensate for network outages without an extra SD card and fully automated, and a portfolio of features and functions for data protection and data security. Discreet installation & two varifocal variants in the box version The 5050 series dome cameras are available with compact, sturdy housing variants and have a fixed focus lens with a focal length of 2.5 mm. The in-ceiling variant is designed especially for discreet installation in suspended ceilings. Meanwhile, the surface-mounted variant can also be installed inconspicuously with a tiny footprint on ceilings or walls. Because of its particularly compact construction, the box version is also ideally suitable for discreet or unobtrusive installation (e.g., at cash machines) and in weather-proof housings for use outdoors. The 5050 series box camera is available in two variants, with a varifocal lens having a focal length of either 3 – 10 mm or 12 – 40 mm. Capturing fast movement in high resolution and HDR The high resolution of the sensor and the sophisticated image processing technology enable image capturing in real time with a frame rate of 60fps (1080p/60) or up to 30 fps with a resolution of 4MP. The camera is thus ideally suited for applications that require the capture of very fast movements in high resolution. The

HDR function captures each image with two special settings which are combined in real time to produce a well-balanced image that provides much greater detail in both bright and dark areas. Useful analysis and rapid search for events The integrated real-time video analysis uses highly-advanced analysis functions such as Intrusion Detection or Line Crossing to detect movement and objects in the uncompressed image. When used with Dallmeier recording systems and client software, the “SmartFinder” function also enables semi-automated searching for events through the rapid analysis of stored objects and metadata. As ONVIF-compatible systems (Profile S and Profile T), the cameras can also be incorporated in many different third-party video management systems. Automatic compensation for outages The camera is equipped with a RAM memory (Dallmeier “SmartBackfill” memory) which is activated in the event of a brief network outage (e.g., Spanning Tree, Bursts). The video stream is transmitted and then integrated automatically and seamlessly in the recording as soon as the connection is restored. Privacy & Security by Design The cameras of the Picoline series include comprehensive security features which can be adjusted flexibly to reflect the requirements of each customer. Like all Dallmeier systems, when used with Dallmeier software and recording systems the cameras of the new Picoline series also offer a full portfolio of data protection and data security functions – from privacy masking to authentication procedures, end-to-end encryption or security gateway functions. When used with third party systems, the cameras operate on the basis of the functions offered by those systems. Further information at www.dallmeier.com

Safetyflex Barriers designs new surfacemounted, crash-rated street furniture product

Safetyflex Barriers, the world-leading manufacturer of anti-terrorism bollards and barriers based in Coventry, has added a uniquely designed surface-mounted product to its innovative crash-rated range of street furniture that can stop vehicle threats in public places. The surface-mounted barriers do not require any foundations or ground fixings so can provide instant protection on a permanent or temporary basis, and are supplied with a bespoke cladding that means they can also be used as functional street furniture and attractive planters. They are crash-tested to industry standards BSI PAS68 and IWA14 to withstand impact at speeds of up to 50mph. Safetyflex has already received orders to install them at key buildings, public realm spaces and shopping centres across the UK. The company has also been granted a UK patent, meaning Safetyflex now has more than 30 of its products patented in the UK and around the world. Marcus Gerrard, director at Safetyflex, said: “We’ve been asked by many city centre projects for a crashrated planter solution with a shallow foundation, so our design team came up with a surface-mounted, crashrated product that can be used as a planter or street furniture with absolutely no need for foundations. “After a year of research and development, we believe they are truly innovative and a real game changer because of the flexibility and functionality they

offer while still providing industry-leading security protection. “They can be picked up and relocated to suit changing needs, as we have seen in town and city centres during the Covid-19 pandemic, and adds to our range of crash-rated street furniture which already includes bike racks and signposts. “As the world begins to open up and large-scale gatherings slowly resume, our latest products will allow us to help our customers react quickly to emerging and changing threats to public safety and security, with a desirable effect because while these new products will look pleasing to the eye, no-one will be aware that what is hidden inside is a crash-rated, anti-terrorist solution.” Safetyflex Barriers is part of the GME Springs group which has over 40 years’ experience in manufacturing suspension systems for the automotive, rail and MOD sectors. It has put its experience of spring technology into the design and manufacture of anti-terrorist security barriers and bollards that meet BSI and IWA standards. The company is continuing its expansion into Australia where its bollards and barriers are installed at a number of high-profile locations across the country, including in the city of Melbourne where bollards from its Truckstopper range protected shoppers during an incident on Bourke Street Mall on 28 January, 2021. Hanwha Techwin’s top 5 video surveillance trends for 2021

A

s has become traditional at this time of the year, Hanwha Techwin has announced what it believes will be the top 5 key trends for the video surveillance industry during 2021. They cover AI edge-based solutions, open platform, the Cloud, cyber security, data protection and privacy issues. 1. Growth of AI edge-based solutions with unlimited Apps potential A key advantage of edge devices is that they have the ability to run specialist software applications onboard. This improves resource efficiency, saves processing time and minimises network bandwidth requirements. With increased functionality now being included in edge-based Deep Learning AI solutions, there is likely to be a large increase in the number of devices deployed which can process data at

the edge. Reflecting a belief that the edge will become an open platform, Hanwha Techwin intends to strengthen its AI-based open platform and work closely with technology partners to create ecosystems which are intuitively user-friendly, scalable and can meet evolving customer demands in a timely manner. 2. Extended open platform will facilitate the development of a wider array of customised vertical market and end-user specific solutions With end-users wishing to achieve maximum value from their video solutions, software development cannot continue as a siloed process led by a single company’s in-house software engineering team. Hanwha Techwin is a founding member of the Open Security & Safety Alliance (OSSA), an initiative

which has brought like-minded organisations together with the objective of outlining specifications for a common platform for security and safety solutions. During 2021, we will work with other members of OSSA to build a standardised and accessible framework, which will provide the flexibility for integrated solutions to be developed that address regional or user-specific requirements. In parallel to collaborating with other members of OSSA, Hanwha Techwin intends to further improve the compatibility and interoperability of its open-platform products within the video surveillance ecosystem. This will be achieved by encompassing specialist edge applications, VMS and Cloud solutions developed by third-party technology partners and will enable us to offer a wide array of optimised solutions which will provide real-life

practical benefits and add significant value to video surveillance systems. 3. The Cloud will be more widely adopted as a business insights tool The Cloud is widely used now as a way of updating product features, as well as installing security patches. However, the increase in the number of edge devices being deployed means the Cloud also has an important role to play as a means of safely managing the devices and handling large amounts of data to provide business intelligence. Hanwha Techwin plans to introduce a Cloud solution which will enable users to more easily manage Wisenet IP network products and monitor their status in real-time.

Equally important, the solution will generate reports which provide greater situational awareness and business intelligence, based on the results of analysed data which has been captured at each edge. 4. Cyber security will become even more crucial with the increased use of edge devices With data increasingly being captured, stored and secured at the edge as part of a smart factory, smart office, smart retail store or on a larger scale, a smart city solution, the need for protection against cyberattacks has become an even more essential requirement. However, cyber security is and will remain a major issue for an application,

regardless of its size or complexity. In 2020, Hanwha Techwin included industry leading cybersecurity functionality within Wisenet7, its most powerful chipset to date. To provide users with peace of mind in knowing their confidential data will be kept safe from hackers, we also achieved UL Cybersecurity Assurance Program (UL CAP) certification for the Wisenet7 chipset. 5. Respect for data protection and privacy GDPR in Europe and CCPA in the US have drawn attention to the need for companies which capture personal data to have adequate privacy procedures in place.

PERIMETER SECURITY

Protecting perimeters

S

Turning fibre optics into smart security perimeter systems

ecurity breaches of borders, utility plants and airports can have catastrophic and devastating consequences, so protecting assets is vital. The global perimeter security market is expected to reach USD29.6 billion by 2025 , driven by growing terrorist threats, increased awareness of illegal immigration, planned crimes, thefts and smuggling. A continuous monitoring system Existing perimeter intrusion detection technologies typically rely on point sensors such as cameras

26 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

that are positioned along a perimeter or border at regular intervals. However, cameras have their limits. They can only provide line-of-sight coverage at specific points; they do not deliver continuous monitoring or provi/de full visibility of the entirety of the perimeter. This is where LiveDETECT comes in. This real-time linear asset monitoring technology from Fotech, a bp Launchpad company, turns fibre optic cables along a border or perimeter into an entire, continuous length of sensors, monitoring the asset at all times. “The sheer distance of some

borders and perimeters means it is impossible to achieve true roundthe-clock monitoring of the perimeter length with physical patrols or CCTV. The solution of positioning cameras every few metres is not feasible from an economic point of view yet leaving gaps in coverage is an open invitation for threats and intrusions,” says Ken Crowe, Security Industry Sector Manager for Fotech. Detecting what happened, where and when LiveDETECT uses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology, which sends thousands of pulses of

light along fibre optic cables every second and monitors the pattern of light reflected back. The fibre optic cable picks up any acoustic or vibrational energy, which changes the light pattern that is reflected back to the hardware, Helios DAS, indicating a disturbance of some kind. Thanks to advanced algorithms and processing techniques, Helios DAS analyses these changes to identify and to categorise the disturbance event, such as walking near or interfering with a boundary, placing a ladder on a fence, or digging near a perimeter. Each type of disturbance has its own signature, and the technology can tell an operator in real-time, what happened, exactly where it happened and when it happened. More importantly, it can also filter out background noise, adapting its response for high-risk or low-risk zones along the perimeter. “If a perimeter is near a frequently-used track for runners, we can ensure that the normal activity doesn’t set off alarms. However, a personnel signature at 3am or one that stops near the fence perimeter, would be viewed as unusual. Any deviations from a normal pattern of behaviour can be programmed and an alert raised,” says Crowe. If a security breech is detected and there is an attempted intrusion, the system alerts the Alarm Management Server and security personnel so they can take the most

appropriate action. There are three levels of alert: green, amber and red. Red is the highest alert level, usually

when someone or something could imminently breach the inside of the perimeter.

IN SECURITY | February 2021 | 27

Easily integrated LiveDETECT should be part of a foundational security strategy. It is easily integrated into existing security systems, working in conjunction with cameras, sentry posts and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also known as drones, to provide situational awareness and to enhance overall protection. “What LiveDETECT delivers is a perimeter with no security gaps. This increases the efficacy and accuracy of identifying potential breeches, as well as boosting the speed of response through the real-time detection of incidents anywhere on the perimeter,” Crowe adds. With an active intrusion alert, LiveDETECT can provide information on where cameras should be pointing. Alternatively, LiveDETECT can send GPS coordinates of the on-going disturbance to a UAV, which automatically launches itself to investigate more fully. As fibre optic cables are typically 28 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

buried in the ground, LiveDETECT is covert; intruders will be unaware of its existence. Furthermore, DAS is not affected by the weather cameras would not be beneficial in a sandstorm or a snowstorm, whereas LiveDETECT can continue to operate reliably. A robust system “LiveDETECT is a robust system into which we can build extra safe-guards. The fibre optics can be configured in a dual loop and run in parallel to provide redundancy, and maintain coverage if a sensing cable is maliciously or accidentally cut” Crowe says. The monitoring system software can also be mirrored to a secondary site, so alerts are recorded in two location, ensuring the responsibility does not lie with one person. Security for the future During the last decade, technological advances have helped increase the

scope of perimeter security systems. Perimeter security systems have historically been used to detect and to deter intrusions in military facilities and critical infrastructure. Today, they are being adopted in commercial and transportation sites as well as residential gated communities in high-risk countries. LiveDETECT fills the gaps in border and perimeter surveillance efforts – delivering continued monitoring compared to existing technologies, improved security, reduced human and drug trafficking and detection of tunnel digging. Crowe concludes, “LiveDETECT’s ability to provide continuous monitoring of an entire perimeter and to raise alerts in real-time, gives security teams the comprehensive overview they need to manage their operations and respond to threats effectively.” For more information, please visit www.fotech.com

ACCESS CONTROL

Access control in rail transport

Catherine Laug, Group Head of Marketing at LOCKEN highlights the security challenges within rail transport and explains how bespoke access control solutions can help What are the main concerns surrounding security and access control within rail transport? The rail industry is vulnerable to safety and security risks, particularly railways and underground train lines. One main priority is to ward off any malicious intrusion 30 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

attempts and potentially devastating consequences. The sheer size of the infrastructure within this industry is much greater than any other, with hundreds of miles of fencing along railway lines and thousands of gates requiring high levels of protection.

However, there is more to major rail transport infrastructure than miles of fencing alongside a railway track. They are also made up of electrical substations, technical installations (lifts, ventilation systems, pumps, etc) and tunnel shafts for aeration purposes. These outdoor facilities

are at the mercy of our everchanging weather conditions, be it extreme sunshine, snow or rain and they can sometimes be located a long distance from the electrical grid, such as in the case of railway tunnel shafts. This exposes them to a risk of corrosion and intrusion. Another challenge involves dealing with unforeseen incidents, such as fires and passenger accidents. It is essential that the emergency services can reach the site of the incident unimpeded when necessary. What are the access control requirements? All areas within the rail infrastructure need tailored access control solutions, which meet the requirements of each location and user. Given the complexity of the infrastructure, composed of sprawling or isolated sites and including tunnels and railway emergency exits, locks without cable are mandatory. Easy installation and minimal maintenance are also required. It means that the keys must supply the required power and access rights to the cylinder. As service quality is an issue, a seamless, standardised access control solution is needed to allow maintenance companies and staff easy access to the right place at the right time. How does LOCKEN work with the rail industry to mitigate challenges? We provide a bespoke approach when working with all industries,

in order to meet the individual needs of each organisation and business sector. We are committed to delivering the best solution, based on our state-of-the-art access management software and latestgeneration induction electronic key. This contactless technology allows instant opening of the cylinders and unrivalled durability. The cylinders are also compatible with mechanical locks, which may prove useful when accessing less sensitive areas. A single electronic key with the necessary access rights can open a vast number of locks and replace cumbersome bunches of keys. This frees up technicians when opening gates or moving between sites. How flexible is LOCKEN’s electronic access control solution? All keys are controlled by the same software and managers can accurately configure each key according to the users. Any openings or attempted break-ins are logged in the electronic key’s memory and sent to the central software. A Bluetooth version of the key offers even greater control, as access rights can also be updated on site using a smartphone and

mobile app. It is therefore capable of offering centralised control and caseby-case, real-time access control, reaching standards of security that are usually only available from on-line access control systems. This cutting-edge technology (RFID, beacons, etc.) sends employees verification messages about their access rights or required safety instructions (wearing a helmet, the buddy system, etc.). Similarly, users can interact with the central system and submit on-site attendance reports, flag up anomalies errors, etc. These bespoke features are designed to meet ever stricter security requirements and accommodate the latest Government guidelines. The electronic key does not require any on-site cabling or batteries for the lock, because the key supplies the cylinder with the energy and the information required to open the lock. In this way, users working on large infrastructures or complex sites with multiple points of access can make do with a single key. The solution is made even more flexible by its purely mechanical component, which can be used

IN SECURITY | February 2021 | 31

to open conventional mechanical cylinders, wherever the two types of locks co-exist within the same system, which may prove useful when accessing less-sensitive areas. This approach ties in with increasingly strict security policies within the underground rail industry. How do you ensure the reliability and robustness of the solution? With high volumes of people entering and exiting different areas of the underground system, it is important to be able to trace who has been where, when and for how long. Advanced software suites can provide access to all operations performed by users, including a complete audit trail. This information is often used by managers for audits, improvements or compliance. When initiating a new access control system, it is important that the supplier and customer work together to understand; who can enter a secure area, where in the building each individual has access to, when an individual can enter a secure area and how an individual will gain access to a secure area. This information can be crucial in the event of a security breach, enabling investigators to find 32 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

out who was the last known key holder in that location and what their movements were whilst there. What’s more, a lost or stolen electronic key can be disabled to prevent any unwanted intrusions. The reporting feature aims to report any attempts to gain access outside specified time ranges or in out-ofbounds areas, thus detecting any anomalies. The electronic key has the IP 66-67-68-69 rating, meaning it’s designed to protect against intrusion from foreign bodies and pressurised water jets, and particularly hardy in the event of damp, rain and dust. The cutting-edge contactless induction technology prevents any poor communication caused by corrosion. The cylinders have CEN 1303 certification, which guarantees their resistance to drilling and vandalism. The electronic access control solution comes with a backup key configured with unlimited rights. This gives the fire brigade and police round-the-clock access to all areas, with no need to update access rights. How does the solution deal with unforeseen incidents such as fires and passenger accidents? The electronic access control

solution comes with a backup key configured with unlimited rights. This gives the fire brigade and police round-the-clock access to all areas, with no need to update access rights. Crossrail chooses LOCKEN solution and ISEO key for new Elizabeth line for London LOCKEN, part of the ISEO group, was recently selected to provide its leading access control solution to Crossrail Ltd for its new Elizabeth line, named on honour of Her Majesty the Queen. the cloud (50%), followed by easier collaboration (44%); more cost-effective (44%); safer / better security (38%). 82% anticipate the levels/frequency of remote workers and flexible working in their organisations to be higher postpandemic and in the longer term than they were pre-pandemic. Security will need to be enhanced to facilitate greater flexibility in worker patterns. An access control solution which is linked to HR records, for example, can check the swipe of an access card against staff records. A staff member who is flagged as being on leave, absent or no longer employed will trigger an automated alert to the relevant personnel. Surveillance cameras also provide secondary authentication through visual clarification of an individual’s identity. The ‘Landscape Report 2020/21: Hosted Security adoption in Europe’ is the third study of its kind by Morphean, and facilitates a better understanding of market trends with comparative data from 2018 and 2019. Other key findings revealed by the study include: • 78% anticipate organisational use of cloud technologies to 40 | February 2021 | IN SECURITY

increase in the future as a result of COVID-19. The security sector reflected a strong inclination towards cloud adoption (70%). IT Services (52%) and Commercial Offices (49%) are the two sectors that anticipated the greatest degree of change in their organisation’s use of cloud technology. 73% of managers believe their organisations are more inclined to adopt cloud as a result of their governments’ responses to COVID-19 - UK (74%), Germany (71%) and Sweden (73%). 27% said physical security was optimised in their companies, a rise of 4% on 2019 (23%). The retail sector was least likely to say that physical security was optimised (19%). VSaaS/ACaaS uptake shown to be more prevalent in Sweden with 59% already utilising such services, with 34% in UK and 31% in Germany considering it.

Rodrigue Zbinden concludes: “For the physical security reseller, the study will demonstrate that hosted security solutions must play a major part in expanding their offering to a wiser customer base. Cloud-enabled

physical security solutions represent an investment into improving security and operations, a chance to forge new business relationships, and an opportunity to embrace future proof technologies in preparation for whatever challenges the future might hold.” Morphean is a Swiss technology company with a strong presence in more than 12 countries worldwide. RETAIL SECURITY

Protecting people How can we better protect our retail workers as shop floor crime rises?

R

etail crime has always been prevalent; in fact, reports suggest that crime has indeed been rising over the recent years, but has since been further accelerated by Covid-19. Sadly, it’s expected that retail crime will continue to increase particularly as we face social and economic downturn as a result of the global pandemic. In such pressured times, it’s imperative that retailers continue to operate as efficiently as possible, and that means tackling shop floor crime. Last year, it was recorded that crime against convenience retailers cost the sector an estimated total of £211m. But most importantly, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those working on the shop floor must be a priority for all retail organisations. Tom Downes, CEO, Quail Digital, explains how technology can play a pivotal role in the safeguarding of all employees working on the shop floor.

committed against are more than statistics. These individuals are often left with emotional trauma and in some cases, physical harm. 25% of the 50,338 recorded instances of violence reported in the ACS 2020 crime report resulted in injury. Furthermore, it’s important to consider the mental health effects that coronavirus is adding to those frontline shop workers during such difficult and uncertain times. That in itself can be overwhelming for many employees without the added pressure of feeling unsafe. The Usdaw report entitled: ‘The impact of coronavirus on the workforce survey,’ shows that a high number of shop worker respondents are feeling increasingly stressed and anxious, expressing concerns about the

long-term impact of the pandemic on their mental health. So what can retail stores do to better protect their employees? Technology to safeguard retail staff While completely eliminating retail crime is a complex and ongoing battle that requires support across a wider ecosystem - from Government initiatives to policing - there are some best practices that retailers are adopting to reduce crime and create a safer working environment for retail staff. For example, the Co-op has turned to technology and connectivity to tackle crime and violence against employees, as part of its larger ‘Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities’

Cause for alarm The evidence is clear. Retail crime is rising. The 2020 British Retail Consortium revealed findings from its annual retail crime survey showing incidents of violence and abuse against shop workers had risen to 424 per day in the period from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019, up 9% from the previous year. Further supported by the 2020 Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) Crime Report which revealed an estimated 50,000 incidents of violence against shop workers and an estimated 83% of convenience sector workers had been subjected to verbal abuse between March 2019 to March 2020. But worse still, the Coronavirus pandemic has since skyrocketed incidents of violent abuse towards those essential key workers serving in retail. Figures from the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) report show that since the pandemic began, the average shop worker has been assaulted, threatened or abused every 6.5 days – more than double the rate of incidents compared to 2019. More than a statistic What must not be lost in these findings is the fact that those shop workers whom the crime has been IN SECURITY | February 2021 | 43

campaign. Along with further investment into intelligent CCTV systems and forensic deterrents, part of its campaign focuses on the better use of connectivity among staff using digital headsets, explaining that: Tom Downes, CEO, Quail Digital

“a key area for the Co-op has been in-store connectivity, which enables colleagues to talk to each other in different parts of our stores and to others who can help in circumstances where there is an incident. We have spent £4.5m on new headsets which are now in all of our stores.” The benefits of improving connectivity with the use of wireless headsets are not only proven to reduce shrinkage due to petty theft, they also offer shop workers reassurance when the communication systems extend to a 24 hour monitoring service, meaning that essential real-time support and expertise for frontline staff when a dangerous situation occurs can be conveyed. Empowering retailers to reinforce the training already in place and ensuring employees follow protocol to minimise their risk of being hurt is essential during a frightening situation.

And with the increasing levels of violence in-store occurring as a direct result of confronting shoplifters , connecting employees with security experts and, by default, the police, not only acts as a deterrent to those with more violent intent, but enables the correctly trained individual to intervene and confront the criminal. Conclusion While there is no overnight fix to eradicating retail crime, there are solutions that can be put in place to help promote the better safety of shop workers. No worker should be subject to physical or verbal abuse, and with the coronavirus adding strain to the mental health of those on the frontline, everything must be done to prevent further negative psychological impact.
