Modernising access control

Upgrading access control can seem like a daunting challenge in industrial settings where large numbers of workers and contractors are enrolled, and where interruptions to operations and security are not an option because of the risks and the cost of potential downtime.

But over time, older systems can become unreliable, leaving gaps in physical security, and raising cybersecurity risks.

Even when they continue to work, they increasingly lack the

key features and functionality that organisations now need: to smoothly manage facilities, enhance the user experience, to support operational efficiency and help drive modernisation plans. And its data and systems transformation programs supporting these objectives, that we see becoming prevalent in the Middle East industrial sector.

Industrial operations with large workforces increasingly want to take advantage of a new generation of access control and visitor management solutions. In a new wave of projects, they are making

good use of biometric readers, QR codes, flexible workflows, and off-the-shelf integration with raft of surveillance brands, wider security and safety systems, and popular identity management and HR databases. This allows for a more secure yet flexible approach to role-based access to facilities, transportation, IT networks, equipment, and high-value assets.

At established sites where systems have been adopted, and added-to, over several years, they are likely to include siloes and technology stacks that result

in technical glitches that require workarounds, and significant inefficiencies. An experienced system operator may know how to navigate issues, but reliance on a few people to manage over-complex systems leaves organisations vulnerable –what happens when those people are absent, or no longer available?

Managing multiple systems and devices that collect data in a multi-layered system is often seen as a challenge. Yet the latest iterations of access control come with the advantage of customisable and user-friendly command and control functionality, making it simple to manage any number of systems and devices with a single interface, streamlining alarm verification and response, and optimising threat mitigation.

That also takes pressure off busy staff, reduces the potential for human error, and makes systems easer to maintain and support. The ease-ofuse of the latest intuitive interfaces with simple drop-down menus and point and click also simplifies training for new staff.

While it may seem daunting to unpick infrastructure that has developed over time, the process needn’t be disruptive or difficult.

We are seeing how modernising aging systems is strengthening security, ensuring compliance, and delivering rapid return on investment. That’s because upgrading access control no longer has to involve the disruption of replacing door controllers and readers, or simultaneously undertaking other major upgrades

such as VMS and surveillance cameras.

Instead, many organisations find a “software takeover” is the most efficient and fastest upgrade path. This is particularly true for large and complex industrial sites, especially when the availability of chipsets for hardware, including controllers to security cameras, are impacted by continuing supply chain issues.

Handled right, upgrades can be managed seamlessly and without interruption to operations, even where large databases are involved.

This was exactly the situation at a major oil refinery that we recently supported with a migration from an embedded system, to eFusion, without a break in operations.

Handling a production process using 400,000 barrels per day to produce premium transportation fuels and high value products for international markets, the refinery employs

thousands of full-time workers and contract staff. For operations of this scale, any disruption to smooth operations would not be acceptable. But the limitations of the existing access control system had to be addressed. The system become slow, and important features such as global anti-passback were not available.

This was a challenge we were well qualified to take on. Migration to a fully integrated eFusion access solution involved rapid software takeover of five thousand cardholders, to ensure secure, uninterrupted personnel movement through more than 220 access points across the 5.2km2 site.

The ID badging system now runs more smoothly and quickly, with cardholders’ fingerprints and pictures enrolled when badges are printed. And eFusion integrates with a Vidsys PSIM system, allowing access events – from day-to-day attendance timing to access denials - to trigger a range of automated actions across relevant security and operations management functions.

Cards are secured using HID Elite Key technology, to add an extra layer of protection. Custom authentication key protects the card number within the access control application of the card, with only matching cards and readers able to work together. This prohibits cards and readers from foreign populations.

Two factor authentication, using cards and fingerprints together, further strengthens access security. Again, to make this work, eFusion was seamlessly integrated with the

Morpho Fingerprint system, allowing operators to handle everything efficiently through a single interface.

Adopting the latest access technology not only delivers enhanced protection at the most vulnerable point on the site – the entrances and exits - but it also opens the way to wider benefits too, with other functions now able to be adopted as part of a unified control platform.

In the application above, we enabled interoperability with SAP to allow integration of core HR functions, including time and attendance, payroll, and training management. The data flow from the SAP human capital management system was streamlined through complete database integration. This, increasingly, is a priority for the industrial organisations we work for. These deployments demonstrate

how the benefits of access control and security system upgrades go well beyond risk reduction, and now include adding value and unlocking efficiency gains that span many aspects of the business.

As operations at the site continue to develop and expand, our modular approach will allow further capabilities and functions to be added, thanks to flexible and scalable deployment options, and the expanding ecosystem off-the-shelf integrations, that eFusion provides.

The old days of costly, highly customised solutions that lead to siloes and inefficiencies are well behind us. Genetec recognises data privacy day by sharing physical security best practices

In recognition of international Data Privacy Day, Genetec Inc. Data privacy has become a global top priority. Collect and store only the data the organisation truly needs. Reduce your exposure to risk in the event of a data breach with simple steps. Consider adjusting a camera’s field of view so it doesn’t record areas that do not require monitoring. Set protocols to automatically archive or delete physical security data based on relevance. And carefully control what data, how much and for how long it can be shared with other organisations.

Limit access to sensitive data. Grant access to data only to those who need it to do their jobs and monitor those activities to ensure identifying information, like images and access events, is used only as intended.

Review access rights regularly so privileges align with user requirements. Using an identity provider, like Microsoft Active Directory, can also help eliminate human error by automating the processes of adding/ removing security user accounts, granting rights, or removing users who have left the organisation.

Anonymise data collection automatically. New technologies can automatically restrict and protect access to personal data. Consider deploying privacy masking like Genetec KiwiVision™ Privacy Protector that automatically anonymizes images of people, so you can continue to survey surveillance footage while respecting privacy. This technology also offers an additional layer of security that ensures only authorised users can “unlock” and view unmasked footage while maintaining an audit trail.

Unify your security solutions. When video surveillance, access control, evidence management, and other sensors operate under one platform, it becomes much easier to access and manage all your data and create reports for a variety of systems and sensors from a single interface. A unified system simplifies the process of tracking system and device health and streamlines software and firmware updates which is key to mitigating the threat of data breaches.

Work with certified partners. Make sure your system providers are properly certified (ISO 27001, 27017 standards, UL 2900-2-3 level 3 cybersecurity certification, and SOC2 compliance), and that they develop all their technology based on principles of privacy. A cyber resilient physical security system will contribute to keeping the data collected from IoT devices and sensors across the physical security network private.

Mayflex, the distributor of Converged IP Solutions, has opened a new fully interactive demonstration suite called M-Tech, at their newly refurbished HQ in Birmingham

The Mayflex Technology Suite, M-Tech, has been designed with three distinct areas; Excel Racks and Cabling, Excel FTTx and Security and Access Control which showcases a wide range of vendors and products that are available to buy from Mayflex.

Tracey Calcutt, Marketing Manager said ‘Following on from a complete refurbishment of our offices in early 2022, the last area to be updated was the M-Tech. Tracey continued ‘The Excel focus area consists of 5 Environ Racks, positioned on a plinth that allows you to see the cabling running underneath and into each rack. Within the racks there is a display of the Excel copper and fibre products, together with complementary products such as the Aura AV solution. We’ve even purposefully set up a few intentional fault inter-links between the racks to be able to demonstrate the testing prowess of the AEM and Fluke testers.’

Tracey continued ‘The third area is the Excel FTTx solution which has a large diagram to show the topology of the FTTx deployments and displays boards to be added soon, together with sample products so you can get a close-up look of the quality of the product range.’

i-PRO introduces industry’s first AI scene change detection capability

AI-based analytic application brings easy on-site learning of a scene by a series of captured images to more than 100 i-PRO camera models

i-PRO Co. Ltd., a global leader in professional security solutions for surveillance and public safety, will add AI Scene Change Detection to its collection of powerful edge-based AI analytics applications. Embodying the latest in AI analytics technology, Scene Change Detection is the first AI-based analytic application that provides easy on-site learning of a scene. When anomalies occur within the camera’s field of view, an alert can be sent to security and operations teams.

The new application will be deployable to more than 100 i-PRO AI camera models upon release. Unlike traditional AI-based object detection analytics which alert or flag when objects cross lines or enter predefined zones, scene change detection allows users to teach a surveillance camera what an entire scene looks like in a normal state. The analytic then flags an anomaly whenever any preselected part of the scene varies from normal. This might include a door that gets propped open longer than normal or stock on a store shelf that sells out beyond a preset limit. Because of the customized threshold settings, brief changes in the scene are ignored since the scene returns to normal within an acceptable timeframe. Utilizing AI-based object detection ensures that people or vehicles that pass through the scene can be automatically excluded.

“We believe that i-PRO’s Scene Change Detection represents the industry’s first edge AI-based scene change detection app to optimize the scene detection algorithm by learning from captured images,” says Norio Hitsuishi, Head of Product Management at i-PRO Co., Ltd.. “Our unique implementation is very powerful

and allows for users to specify how much change triggers an alert after a specified elapsed time. For example, an outside door should be able to open and close routinely without triggering an alarm. Using Scene Change Detection, users can set it to only alarm if the door is left open for more than 5 minutes. This is something that traditional motion detection analytics can’t do.”

The Scene Change Detection app can be operated simultaneously with other apps such as AI-based motion detection of objects allowing security professionals to conduct multiple detections with one camera. A high-end server is not necessary as all processing occurs on the edge. The Scene Change Detection application can learn multiple different detection scenarios with up to 16 monitored regions of change per scenario. An alarm event can be received via i-PRO’s Active Guard plugin installed on popular VMSs such as Genetec, Milestone and Video Insight.

“AI scene change is another good example of demonstrating i-PRO’s open and flexible policy, we are making products and technologies that can be customized to the market’s needs, whatever they are.” Says Gerard Figols, President of i-PRO EMEA. “This application goes beyond pure security. Net2 Access Control secures one of Britain’s oldest boarding schools

Christ’s Hospital School has a long history. It first opened its doors to 380 pupils in November 1552, at that time located in Newgate Street, London. King Edward VI became the school’s patron and founder, thanks to his efforts to ensure charitable measures were put in place to provide clothing, lodging, and learning for London’s

poorest.

In 1902 a new site was acquired in Horsham, where the prestigious school is now located, having been deconstructed and rebuilt from the old London site. Christ’s Hospital is widely known in the UK for its outstanding education principle and its diverse breadth of pupils. It is the mission of Christ’s Hospital to continue to enable those from

a diverse range of backgrounds to come together and thrive.

In 2022 the school needed to replace their security system with a new solution that would be simple to manage and maintain the security of the site, staff, and pupils. Vistec Systems Ltd, an integrated security systems provider based in Crawley, West Sussex, met the challenge head on. David Kennedy, Housekeeping

Requirements

The school currently has around 900 students, over 95% of which board. With 18 boarding houses on site, all requiring different access permissions, as well as the school buildings, dining hall, and other common areas. It was imperative that the school’s new security system was able to manage a huge number of doors and users, whilst still providing a simple, user-friendly experience.

James Brookes, Operations Manager at Vistec, said: “I’ve been working with Paxton systems for over 12 years, and as soon as I heard the requirements for Christ’s Hospital, I knew that Net2 would be the right solution.”

Net2 is Paxton’s flagship,

networked access control solution, designed to make the management of any site straightforward. Easy to use and with a range of features, it moves beyond the basics of controlling the flow of people around a building, offering benefits such as building control and system integration. The Net2 system is easily scalable, making it perfectly suited to the school’s needs.

James continues: “There were a few challenges to contend with for this installation, including the need to use existing cabling, limited space for hardware storage, and most difficult… time! We needed to install over 280 readers and all the supporting Net2 plus access control units in only six weeks whilst the students were on their summer holidays. Thanks to the ease of the Net2 system to install, and the occasional help from Paxton’s Technical Support team, we were able to deliver!”

Solution

David, who is responsible for the security decisions made at the school, has experience with Net2 from a previous job, and was pleased with the proposal to use it again at Christ’s Hospital. He said: “I knew Net2 would be a great choice to manage a site of this size, and this time we got to install the Net2 Marine Readers. I’d seen them installed when collecting my wife from work, and I just thought I had to have them. They’re visually appealing, but also provide a clear, lit indication of where the door is, and whether access has been granted or denied. I can’t speak more highly of them.”

Christ’s Hospital’s new security system provides simple read in/read out access on all doors, helping to maintain the security of the site and its staff and students. As every user needs to present their access token to get in and out of a building, the Net2 software can provide exhaustive

reporting on how many people are on-site, in any given building, and even pinpoint the location of specific users in an emergency.

The school also has an ingenious alert system to ensure the students’ safety; the security team will get notification if students leave their dorms out of hours. After a set time, should a student present their Net2 token to a reader to exit the building, an alert will be flagged in the system and the security team will know who is trying to leave the site (and from which building they’ll be trying to exit).

To further support the school’s unique requirements, several keypad readers have also been installed on the external doors of relevant buildings, to allow access and egress to temporary students who board over the Easter and Summer holidays. Students will be issued PINs instead of tokens, which may

otherwise be lost or not returned. The use of PINs instead of physical tokens in this instance saves time, admin, and money for the school when the students depart at the end of their term.

James from Vistec adds: “To overcome the challenge of the limited space, we used the Net2 plus 1 door controller in the PCB-only format and installed several of them in a single Haydon PSU cabinet to minimise the amount of wall space required for the installation. This is another reason why Net2 was the best option for this site; its flexibility allows us to make it work to our advantage.”

Result

The Net2 system has been in use since September 2022, and the school report very few teething problems. All staff, students, and system administrators are pleased with how easy Net2 access control is

to use and have fully gotten to grips with all the features. There are now plans to further extend the already vast system to secure all the internal doors on the higher floors of the boarding houses.

The future of airport security: faster, smarter, safer

Paul Mason at Redline Assured Security explores how future airport security will be enhanced with technologically advanced equipment and artificial intelligence

Airport security is undergoing a fundamental change. New regulations in the industry have been reactive in the past, adjusting in response to criminal and terrorist activity. The 100ml limit for liquids is a prime example, implemented in response to a foiled al-Qaeda plot that intended to conceal liquid explosives in 500ml bottles. However, with the introduc-

tion of 3D computer tomography scanners in UK airports as early as 2024, not only will the 100ml liquid limit rule be lifted, but it will also enable aviation security to stay ahead of the terrorist threat as opposed to reacting to threats. These advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners allow for a far clearer view of the contents of a bag than the current 2D scanners and the scope of their

technical capabilities and signal the beginnings of a new reality for airport security. Looking ahead, it’s expected that well-trained screeners will be aided by artificial intelligence (AI) to respond to precise, real-time threats as they happen. The future could well see AI doing the bulk of the work with security personnel on-hand to take action in the event of an actual threat detection. The implications for passengers? A

faster, smarter, and overall even more efficient security experience.

What’s new in the technology?

Most airports use X-Ray machines to screen luggage, relying on screeners to identify prohibited items from an often cluttered, 2D image generated by the machine using a defined colour palette. This often results in luggage with a range of unidentifiable but safe objects being flagged for hand search, slowing down the flow at security checkpoints and causing long queues.

CT scanners are a vast improvement in terms of efficiency, producing highly detailed 3D colour imagery that can also be rotated 360 degrees, giving screeners the ability to ‘digitally reach inside the bag’ and see items in their true dimensions and constituent parts without the need to physically search it. The ability to view the contents of a bag in fine detail, recognising even the composition of materials, means electronics and liquids that may be misidentified as potential threats by X-Ray machines can remain inside a bag, discounting the need for a manual hand search in most cases.

The CT scanners currently being trialled are already providing a solution to the long waiting times in airport security. Shannon Airport in Ireland, for example, reported that the introduction of CT scanners halved the time passengers spent going through security, demonstrating their efficiency.

What’s next for airport security?

Whilst not currently available commercially, AI is highly likely to become more ubiquitous in future

equipment. In CT scanners, AI can be used to identify and isolate threats in bags much quicker than the time it takes to manually process a complex image, providing luggage screeners with a clear, quick image of whether action should be taken. The ability to differentiate easily and accurately between every day and prohibited items means that bag checks will be the exception rather than the norm, and the bags that are flagged are far more likely to contain a real threat as opposed to a false alarm.

Another advantage of AI machine learning is that the database can be continuously updated with new threats as they emerge, meaning security will always be one step ahead. In our training facilities at Redline, for example, we are using our CT scanners to process thousands of bags to build up a framework where the AI can identify a range of threats from every angle. With this wealth of information, AI machines become capable of identifying these threats quicker than human scanners, highlighting the potential for AI to accelerate detection rates and streamline the airport security process even further.

The changing face of security personnel

At present, it takes varying degrees of time to decipher X-Ray images and recognise threats amongst the varying complexities of clutter in cabin bags that we travel with. Given the critical role security personnel play in ensuring prohibited articles are not smuggled onboard, future airport security needs to be better optimised to retain high levels of protection whilst also

increasing passenger throughput and experience. As we move into a new environment where CT scanners and AI become the norm, a bulk of the work completed manually—the deciphering of threats—will be performed by AI in a fraction of the time with a lower error rate. The primary role of airport security will shift from screening to reinforcing decisions made by AI.

As airport security becomes more technologically complex it will continue to need well-trained and highly skilled screeners to make top-level decisions. Since AI can filter through the noise of a regular bag and identify threats with precision, it becomes more likely that screeners will only need to take action when there is a real threat, or where the bag is too complex for automation to be effective. Their roles become more decisive in the overarching goal of preventing prohibited articles coming on board.

The training requirements for 2D and 3D scanners are very different, and the transition from using X-Ray to using CT is challenging. Whereas training for 2D involves mostly finding the threat in a static 2D (flat) image and then applying threat image recognition, in 3D machines the image has depth and is interactive. Often the threat has already been recognised and is therefore more geared towards decision-making. At Redline, we have integrated our CT machines into our security training, allowing screeners to have a hands-on experience with the new technology and to build understanding and confidence. The result will be highly trained, assured screeners taking accountability for

critical security decision-making. Looking ahead to the airport of the future

The introduction of CT scanners is the beginning of the future for airport security. As the technology becomes more widespread and streamlined in its application, security will become far less intrusive than it is at present. AI is also likely to be introduced to body scanning technology, pinpointing threats on the person without the need for a pat-down, resulting in an airport experience that is more leisurely and less invasive. Instead of long queues, bagged liquids

and multiple trays, the future airport may feature security that feels as simple as walking along a travelator, with offending bags taken to the side.

This future, however, does rely on greater public education on prohibited articles. Whilst false alarms will largely become a thing of the past and we will be free to take full-sized tubes of toothpaste on holiday, the flow of airport security will continue to be interrupted by passengers inadvertently bringing lighters, pocket-knives, scissors, and other such items that are nonetheless forbidden on board. The aviation security sector has a responsibility to contribute to providing greater awareness of prohibited articles, and to encourage the public and security personnel to work together to make checkpoints as seamless as possible.

Whilst shorter waiting times are certainly an appealing aspect to the future airport, the main aim of security as we go forward is to make sure the likelihood of someone being able to bring prohibited articles on board is reduced to zero. New technology operated by highly-skilled screeners and backed by AI is crucial in achieving this goal and will ultimately make

airports more secure—criminality will inevitably be forced down as smuggling prohibited articles becomes increasingly difficult.

Doing the right thing with AI

Video surveillance technology must be used responsibly, and regulating technology such as live facial recognition is important. But in appraising these technologies, we must be careful not to throw away AI and its benefits with the regulatory bathwater. Throughout history, technology has been put to both good and bad use. There is no better example of this than the personal computer. Connected to the internet, the humble PC opened up the world to its users, making

communications with friends and family on the other side of the world cheap and easy.

In the wrong hands, however, the same personal computer allowed hackers to access inadequately secured corporate and government networks, steal sensitive information and sell it to the highest bidder.

It is right that we continually address the technology available to us and closely consider both the value it brings and its potential for misuse. At present, there is a specific concern across society about

technology that, if used irresponsibly, will infringe on our privacy and undermine civil liberties. This includes a number of technologies that rely on artificial intelligence (AI), most notably live facial recognition (LFR). A number of police forces across Europe have been using LFR, but a series of legal challenges have emerged around its use.

Striking a balance

LFR is one of many examples of AI at work in video technology. Employed in video systems, AI can improve

image quality, remove noise and eliminate false alarms, ensuring that operators only focus on the incidents and events that matter. Used this way, AI saves time, reduces cost, boosts efficiency and enhances security.

At the same time, the European Commission is proposing the first-ever legal framework on AI to provide AI developers, deployers and users with clear requirements and obligations regarding specific uses of AI. Central to this will be the identification of different levels of risk associated with a particular application of AI.

Importantly, the commission also hopes that regulation will “strengthen uptake, investment and innovation in AI across the

EU.” A balance is required between regulating the use of technology to ensure it does not trample over individual rights, while encouraging the innovation that gives rise to more and more applications where AI can deliver real benefits.

Responsible manufacturers like Hanwha Techwin are used to striking these balances. To be clear, Hanwha doesn’t offer a live facial recognition solution in Europe. A right and proper place for AI

We support proper regulation and a

public debate around the responsible use of technology such as AI. At the same time, however, it is important that the valuable role that AI plays in video technology to help keep our public spaces operational, safe and efficient is recognised and encouraged.

For example, Hanwha is pioneering the use of AI ‘at the edge’ in video cameras to solve typical challenges that police forces face when investigating crime. Crucially, this is achieved without impacting on civil liberties.

AI can help police officers quickly locate a missing person by examining masses of video footage and quickly classifying images to extract only those that include attributes such as the colour of clothing worn by

the individual, whether they were wearing a hat or carrying a bag, or even moving in a particular direction of travel. What might previously have taken police officers days to achieve can now be done in hours, freeing up officers to undertake more detailed investigative work instead of manually scanning video footage. AI

makes this possible. Doing the right thing Crucially, this use of AI does not carry implications for privacy as these systems are trained to focus on objects and attributes rather than identifying individuals through facial features.

What’s more, AI is even called on to protect the identity of members of the public captured on this video footage by redacting the faces of anyone except the missing person and rendering them unrecognisable. Only police and court personnel and those permitted to access the unredacted video footage may do so.

In the light of the amazing things that AI now makes possible, it would be a shame if, in the quite proper assessment of forms of technology that can present a threat to privacy, AI and its benefits are thrown away with the regulatory bathwater.

Why the connected officer is driving security transformation

For many years, too many people have associated security with disengaged officers, offering a limited set of skills and reluctantly performing and recording a minimum set of daily tasks.

While customers may have been aware of these flaws, many have not prioritised security and, as a result, their security has continued in the same shape and design over lengthy periods, becoming outdated and ineffective.

Common complaints have included security being too reactive to incidents or providing limited and inadequate service delivery reporting. The officers themselves often cite a sense of loneliness, with

an under investment in training and development and lack of connection to their head office and colleagues leading to their disengagement.

However, with the post pandemic environment acting as a catalyst, organisations are now demonstrating a much greater appetite to modernise security.

Noah Price, G4S Academy International Director, outlines how the role of security is changing and how its Connected Officer Programme is delivering service improvement, workforce engagement and the delivery of safer environments by leveraging technology advancements whilst maintaining personal interaction.

Today’s security consumers

So how is security responding?

G4S’ Connected Security Officer programme is emerging as the key enabler. Significantly, this technology-enabled programme still operates with people at the core, but uses technology to drive the service improvement and staff engagement that the modern environment demands.

The programme is already well embedded within some significant

security operations, such as the UK’s largest public services department, where the programme has been rolled out to officers operating across 800 UK sites.

Importantly, the programme is just as relevant for small and medium sized businesses, who require improvements to security, but on a much smaller scale.

What does a Connected Officer Look Like?

A Connected Officer’s appearance will vary depending on the environment in which they work. In some cases, wearable technology will be obvious to the public and for good reason. A first responder may appear bionic, given the multiple devices that they could be wearing, such as body-worn cameras with a visible screen, smart weapons and heads up displays. But in a corporate reception, where officers are expected to balance their security function with customer service, the officer may wear technology that is less apparent to the public, such as smart watches, tablets and augmented reality glasses that look like everyday eyeglasses.

What Benefits Does the Connected Officer Programme Bring?

-Officer Engagement and Development

Security officers are selected for their specific personality traits, that range from leadership and courage to compassion and patience. These human traits are what allow officers to greet visitors in one moment and deter criminals the next. Technology can’t have a conversation with another human to determine if they are a potential risk or provide a warm front of house greeting.

So, whilst the security officer remains key, the programme uses technology to support the officer by providing simple and easy access to a network of colleagues and learning and development materials - all driving more engagement and motivation.

Through a tablet or appropriate smart device, the officer can access formal training, bulletins and even company updates and news - supporting their development, engagement and preventing disassociation and frustration.

-Providing Data Driven Performance nsight

The benefits of the Connected Officer programme are far from limited to the officers themselves. By using their handheld device to record all activities, data is captured centrally. Information captured from officers operating across multiple locations can be consolidated into simple and easy to consume reporting - all accessed from a central location.

Any customer that oversees security across multiple locations can view key information, such as performance notifications, at the click of a button. They have real time insight to drive better decision making.

Common areas of monitoring include validating that key tasks have been completed in accordance with the contract service level agreement, and in compliance with regulatory requirements and that shifts have been fulfilled. Customers can also review an archive of reported incidents to assess trends.

-Performance Improvement

This data insight leads to resource optimisation and a real focus on

service performance improvement, and the Connected Officer Programme has real operational benefits too.

A real time connection to a command and control function makes use of developments in artificial intelligence to identify potential incidents before they occur. Unusual motion and activity is flagged in real time, allowing officers to proactively investigate incidents, armed with key information, rather than waiting for incidents to be reported, when it is often too late.

When an incident does occur, the Connected Officer programme provides instant officer location visibility to command and control. This means that the most appropriate officer is tasked with attending the scene and can be briefed on any potential threats in advance, so they are fully prepared to provide an appropriate response. Speed of response is critical in an emergency and this saves precious time.

-Creating a Safer Environment

We have seen the Connected Officer Programme have huge safety benefits in sectors where violence

and aggression is prevalent, such as hospitals, retail and other public facing roles.

The presence of body-worn cameras, as part of the connected offering, has been proven to lead to a noticeable change in the way that the public interact with securityoften quickly appeasing hostile and aggravated incidents, once people become aware that they are being recorded.

-A Sustainable Approach

The environment itself benefits too. With paper reported to account for around 26% of total waste at landfill, the elimination of paper-based reporting provides significant sustainability benefits. In addition, as less paper is consumed, precious storage space is freed up, meaning less energy is consumed.

What’s Next?

As artificial intelligence and natural language processing progress, we will see increased adoption of virtual officers, which will operate in a similar manner to mobile assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, IBM’s Watson Assistant and

Microsoft’s Cortana.

As an example, a connected security officer will engage their radio or mobile device and ask the assistant to run a license plate. The system will query the incident and case management software, or any of our other enterprise systems. It will be an officer’s virtual partner.

During one of the most transformational times in human history, technology is vital, and G4S will always use it to support its security officers. Defining the future

The business case for integrated solutions by Mark Taylor, RISCO UK and Ireland managing director

For many of the accredited and professional security installers that form a rapidly increasing share of RISCO’s customer base, the acquisition of new commercial and high-end residential projects is a key component of their business development plans.

With the potential of high returns as well as interesting work

that promotes job satisfaction and employee retention - at a time when, according to apprenticeship provider Skills for Security, the industry is facing a shortage of around 30,000 engineers - these contracts are highly sought after.

Within the commercial and high-end residential sectors, end-users including those in the office, logistics, retail, hospitality

and manufacturing sectors are increasingly specifying access control solutions. Indeed, business intelligence firm Expert Market Research (EMR) forecasts that globally, this market will grow by 7.4% between 2023 and 2028.

Access control solutions have the capability of providing customers not only with an increased degree of physical security but can also

help organisations to achieve wider goals. For example, environmental sustainability can be improved by controlling and monitoring access to different areas, so enabling companies to adapt their heating and lighting according to occupancy.

This increased demand for access control solutions currently coincides with one of the most challenging sets of economic circumstances seen for many years. While inflation looks set to continue to fall following last October’s 41 year high of 11.1%, the government predicts that by the end of 2023, it could still be double its 2% target.

Within this context, it is increasingly difficult for installers to maintain healthy margins, especially when some SME enterprises and high-end residential property owners still regard premium security as an option rather than a necessity. It is the role of manufacturers to provide customers with the opportunity to deliver cost-effective installations.

Integrated solutions

Access control technology is subject to fast-moving technological developments, and a growing number of manufacturers are now able to offer solutions that integrate access control with other security capabilities, such as intruder alarms and video verification. Precluding the complexity of combining multiple standalone systems and facilitating quicker and easier installation, these products enable installers to limit project costs.

Some integrated solutions are particularly suitable for premises including a limited number of doors, for which separate access control and intruder alarm systems are unnecessarily expensive, providing excessive levels of functionality.

They also allow installers to carry a relatively small amount of stock – of particular importance as some manufacturers continue to face post-pandemic and post-Brexit supply disruption – and to spend time training their engineers in the fitting of just one product.

Sourcing equipment

As the choice of integrated intruder alarm, access control and video verification solutions expands, the process of sourcing the appropriate

product can be overwhelming for installers, but there are several criteria that we recommend they look out for.

First off is to find a product that features BUS. The most flexible wiring topology on the market, BUS architecture enables devices such as keypads, detectors and sounders to be flexibly wired in a single-line “daisy-chain” protocol in addition to or in place of a conventional “star” layout. If required, it also facilitates the introduction of a “spur” configuration to wire a specific device using a short extension. BUS significantly reduces the lengths of cabling and quantity of zone expanders required. Furthermore, BUS connected devices facilitate significantly reduced on-site

maintenance and fault-finding visits, allowing installers to adjust device settings remotely - with resultant cost-savings.

Linear BUS formats are quick and easy to install and incorporate an economical quantity of materials. They save installers many hours of labour: in the experience of some RISCO customers, this saving has been as high as around 75%. These benefits become particularly apparent on large commercial projects.

Launched at the end of last year and designed for projects ranging from high-end residential to multisite commercial premises involving up to 32 doors and 512 zones, RISCO’s LightSYS+ Access Control cloud-based integrated alarm, access

control and video verification solution is an adaptation of the LightSYS+ scalable hybrid intruder alarm system unveiled in January 2022.

It features RISCO BUS - the first BUS architecture on the market when it was launched nearly 20 years ago –which connects up to 32 devices via a single 4 core cable; existing cabling may be used. This technology allows contractors to programme, diagnose and service LightSYS+ Access Control remotely, speeding up installations and reducing the need for maintenance site visits.

The second criteria to look for when selecting an integrated solution is backwards compatibility. Products featuring this capability can be assimilated into any existing wiring configuration and type, facilitating flexible wired formats and selectable

zone resistor values, so promoting easier upgrades and providing end-users with a cost-effective means of integrating access control.

In their entirety, integrated access control, intruder alarm and video verification systems include a range of auxiliary products such as push to exit (PTE) buttons, break glass panels, maglocks and door opener readers (DOR); IP65-rated DORs are the most versatile, able to be installed either indoors or outdoors and capable of functioning in extreme temperatures. In order to make the product procurement process as efficient as possible, it is worth sourcing a supplier offering the entire equipment portfolio.

The provision of a comprehensive suite of installer support services such as webinars and videos, as

well as face-to-face training events, is also key to the delivery of costeffective integrated solutions, and many installers prefer to work with manufacturers offering UK-based technical assistance which facilitates competitive response times.

Finally, insurance providers will stipulate that end users’ security solutions meet a range of industry standards - such as PD6662 and EN50131 – so it is crucial that installers use products that are compliant with these.
