Level 3 2018-2019 Semester1 ARC305 Small and Medium Scale Buildings Academic individual work Tutor: Richard Hay

Site Analysis about Shikumen

Concept Model

Nowadays, there are many social problem occured because of social differentiation. However, in the past, life in Shikumen Linong is really harmonious with various public activities in the street. Result from the living system of Linong, residents are friendly to each other and full of communication. From the research, we can know that there are no public activites space in Linong at that time , all the public activities happened in the main steet of Linong (see diagram behand). People from different ages, different jobs are met around their circulation of Linong system. According to the contrast between modern time and old time because of the change of lifestyle, I want creating s o m ew h e re to re m i n d p e o p l e t h e harmonious living atomosphere in Linong in the past. people living here could reduce pressure from modern society and enjoy the public activtiy with neighborhoods, which could close the distance between people. As a result, I would like to set the viewing on exterior facade which could also let pedestrain could enjoy the viewing of the residents' public activities (see concept models) . Just like Linong's life could be seen throught the entrance 'shikumen' (see collage).

Urban Sound Absorber — Design of Comprehensive Public Architecture in Central Shanghai

Level 3 2018-2019 Semester2 ARC304 Final Year Project: A House for Madam X Academic Individual Work Tutor: Tordis Berstrand, Aleksandra Raonic, Claudia Westermann

Concept From: ‘Five Spice Street’ by Can Xue

FIVE SPICE STREET 《五香街》 by Can Xue

The novel revolves around its main character Madam X, or rather, it revolves around the incapacity to define who or what Madam X is. There are many stories about Madam X. Most likely she is a person, but maybe she is not. She is the site of endless suspicion, but also of love and admiration. She is reported to be the weirdest person on the street, accused of what no one dares to speak about, and betrayed until she is honoured as a visionary who "represents a society of the future," and she is elected representative of the street. Shortly after this, her house collapses, and whether or not it is symbolic of the collapse of the society and the times that created the story of Madam X, it is an opportunity for a new house - one that houses the "society of the future.” This is the rebirth of the future.

Acoustic Geometry Research

(borrow from gossiping) Technical Sound Pinciple

Acoustic Geometry Cases

Sound Mirrors in the first World War as Warning System The Sound Mirrors, also known as Acoustic Mirrors, Concrete Dishes or Listening Ears, are large concrete structures designed as an early warning system to detect enemy aircraft in the first World War.

Sound Mirrors in Modern Times as Installation Elmo Vermijs used manure, compost, and sea clay to make the sounds of the meadow birds, which depend on these materials for their food supply, audible for visitors of the polder.

Sound Bounce and Create Echo

Acoustic Shells / Flanagan Lawrence These ‘Acoustic Shells’ act as a stage and shelter for the local community. O n e s h e l l fa c e s t h e to w n a n d forms the principal bandstand. The acoustic design of the interior creates a reflective surface to project the sound of the performers to the audience. The other shell faces the beach and forms a more intimate structure as a shelter for listening to the sea or for buskers to perform.

Typology Study Forest Megaphone These architectural objects are “gigantic wooden megaphones for the forest, part of an acoustic installation for amplifying the sounds of the landscape. Exhibition: Ceramics and Sound This funnel-shaped ceramic loudspeakermakes it possible to reproduce ultra-low frequency sounds.

Ecotone Hotel In Biwako - Sound Of Wind / Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects The chapel is assumed a space filled with strong natural wind blowing from Lake Biwa. Therefore, it make the project as an instrument played by the natural wind. It is a calm space to echo the sound of the waves of Lake, high wind began to hear, tone will change depending on the direction and speed of wind. Wind instrument sound by vibrating columns of air inside tube.

Geometry: Cone

Study Models

Beased on the researches, we can know this kind of geometry could be use in architecure for accustic transform by sound reflection. Thus I chose the cone as basic element.

Salute John Milton Cage - The artist of experimental music When Sound meets Life & Art The design USES acoustic architecture as medium to transmit and digest the impetuous emotions of the city through human voice. Using the principle of experimental music, the design enables "voice to talk with voice", enjoying the emotional expression by urban life through sound, breaking down the barriers of art and life.
