As for his years at Hanover High, Wyley said, “Words can’t describe how grateful I am to the faculty, staff, and fellow classmates who supported me along my high school career. I am grateful that I knew them and saddened to leave them as I go off to college. I can only hope that someday I will be able to repay them.” Although my high school career may be ending abruptly due to the current situation [schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic], I am and always will be proud to be a Hanover Hawk,” he added. Love certainly makes adapting easier
| Reader Views
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor hen Mom put her house on the market, sold most of the furnishings, and packed to move here in 2009, my sister and I were so proud of her as she took charge of the next chapter in her life. Leaving wasn’t easy -- she had lived in the same area for almost 79 years. And the house she sold within a year of leaving it had been the first and only home she and Dad owned. They bought it in July 1961, just days before my 5th birthday. Mom still has a lot of sentimentality about that neighborhood and the friends she made during all those years. It was the same neighborhood her parents settled in after leaving the farming life in eastern Kentucky for Grandpa’s 40-year career in the coal mines. As I’ve said before, I arrived in Winchester, Virginia, in the spring of 2005 because I knew I
W
needed to get closer to my sister, whose health was rapidly declining. The goal was to find employment in Richmond. I do appreciate the opportunity the Byrd family gave me by opening the door to Virginia with a copy editor’s job at The Winchester Star. But the focus remained on getting to Richmond. Fortunately, the editor’s job opened at The Mechanicsville Local and I was blessed to start there in July 2008. Mom made the move here in September 2009. Sometimes I forget that leaving Logan, West Virginia, was a lifetime of change for my mother. Despite being very well traveled, that was home. And, to her, it still is. She enjoys life in Mechanicsville and all that living in the Greater Richmond area provides. But she maintains that the small city in a valley between hills and a river is her home. When I moved out on my own in 1976, I was like “free at last.” Young and carefree best
described many years of my life. In 1991, I started moving with my career -- never thinking that Dad would suddenly die a year later. Mom retired when they had planned and was content in their house. We almost lost my sister in July 2004, that’s when I knew I had to move to Virginia. I was confident that if I got here Mom would soon follow. She did spend at least a month every summer and most of the winter with me in Winchester. We both knew I wasn’t staying there though, so her moving wasn’t an issue then. We recently celebrated our 8th anniversary in a lovely house in a wonderful retirement community. Our neighbors are kind and caring. I often forget what Mom gave me to join her daughters, but I know she’d do it again. That’s the thing about love: it supercedes all other aspects of life. She is a blessing and I thank God every day when I hear her say, “Good morning.”
Memorial Day message is not quarantined By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist As a child, we celebrated Memorial Day in much the same way we recognized other summer holidays — by decorating our bikes and staging a parade.
I guess anyone from that generation will recall the importance of bicycles in our daily existence. A pile of bicycles hastily parked beside a playground was a regular sight in our neighborhood. Our bikes became a mystical vehicle that could take us anywhere. If you

Pandemic’s ‘freedom protestors’ Look, I’ll begin with a short background to set y’all “freedom protesters” on the correct and “truthful” path. I was in the USNR (United States Navy Reserve) for 28 months in the first year of the 1980s. When I graduated with a degree, I thought “with being a reservist and a mechanic with a degree” maybe I could get a commission in the USN (United States Navy).” I was wrong. Not good enough. So I went to the U.S. Army (apparently they’ll commission anyone with a pulse). I spent 22 years there with an active duty slot at the end. Got shown the door (as I was walking into my lieutenant colonel job) because I pissed off the wrong little jerk (done that a few times in my life ... I regret this now). You know what they say in Texas ... “oil well.” You cannot change yesterday, just today. You can only hope (and plan for tomorrow). This brings me to the subject of this letter. These “freedom rallies” are disguised. They’re very well disguised as “practice drills” for a race war. Why, for instance, is there a Republican legislator in Michigan’s legislature with a battle-flag mask on their face (during session)? Why are there Nazi flags present at these rallies? Why are there little punks with long rifles in the capital building? Why are there Gadsden flags being perverted at these rallies? Why did Trump first say, “I alone will decide when to reopen the states?” Then walk it back. By the way, leaders make tactical decisions then stand by these decisions because they’re leaders and that’s what leaders do. By the way, walking back (everything) isn’t a leader’s behavior. from wagons that would be pulled by the little ones who hadn’t crossed the line to twowheelers. We unwound rolls of red, white and blue crepe paper, and entwined it meticulously in the spokes of our wheels. A clothespin and playing card strategically attached to a fender support provided the roar of a real engine. We placed colorful streamers in the ends of our handlebars, and attached pinwheels to our forks. In a simple truth that becomes apparent to all as years pass, the real fun of the parade was the preparation. a behavior of one who isn’t consistent in leadership. It’s a symptom of cowardice (as dodging the draft five times). All truth! Apparently someone told him he should allow the governors to take individual charge over their individual states (remember “States’ Rights”).

to finish are what I remember most about those days. The parade was somewhat anticlimactic, and, by the next day, the bikes had returned to their utilitarian origins, complete with torn seats and rusty fenders. As we prepare to honor those who served on this Memorial Day, an absence of parades is just one of the things that will seem decidedly different from past years. The coronavirus has taken a tremendous toll on aging veterans, and any consideration of large gatherings for this highrisk group was quickly deemed not possible. But, even in this unusual year of unprecedented challenges, the meaning of Memorial Day remains, and the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country are no less appreciated and hon-
ored. Perhaps this crisis intensifies our focus and appreciation of those unselfish enough to risk life and limb on unknown soil to preserve our way of life. This virus has caused our nation unimaginable harm and forced us to re-examine things we once took for granted. Making sacrifices has become a daily routine as we struggle to return to some time of normalcy. But, it does not affect our ability to remember and honor those who made sacrifice a way of life in defense of their nation. Do not allow our compassion and respect for our national heroes to be quarantined. We should remember that never have so few sacrificed so much for so many, and unfore-
seen circumstances shouldn’t dampen our commitment to their memory. So, even minus the parades and memorial services, all of us can take a moment to honor men and women who placed service above personal safety and left their blood on foreign soils across the globe. And, honestly, the message of Memorial Day is expressed in many ways. Marching bands with fancy floats and marching soldiers are certainly appropriate methods to show our appreciation, and we’ll await their return when better days return. But, thinking back, that dog riding in a wagon decorated with an American flag pulled by a kid with a homemade patriotic hat delivered the same message. “Thank You” to those who served and sacrificed.
So he “proclaimed” (as practicing dictators do) he’d “allow” the governors to decide for themselves. Then ... He and Steve Bannon, and Steven Miller, and Jared/ Ivanka, and Richard Spencer, et al. would get certain “organizers” to organize these “freedom rallies” in each state with a strategic manner. These rallies are flowing along perfectly now. Mission accomplished! However, these rallies are not meant to gain “freedoms.” These rallies (again for clarity) are meant to “stir the bucket.” These rallies are meant to incite. These rallies are meant to further divide this nation I defended for 28 years (if you count the four years as a cop). Divide our nation. Us. We the People. Their mission: divide. This kills three birds with one stone. 1). Deflect attention away from Trump’s many shortcomings. 2). Divide the masses over the same reoccurring nightmare: “racism.”
3). Protect Trump’s re-election chances. Remember what Jesus said in Mark 3:25 that Abe Lincoln borrowed in his Gettysburg Address (y’all have gotta look it up). Donald John Trump has divided and back-stabbed for five decades. His dark and cowardly and divisive history is too long for me to make this into a long letter. I know plenty of decent folks in New York City (I was forward liaison officer on 9/11 while on active duty). I made friends while there. I’ve heard dozens of other people at other times since 2017 tell me how evil Trump is (no, I do not suffer from TDS – Trump Derangement Syndrome). I’ll stop now by begging folks to stay home during this pandemic and listen to the doctors/nurses/scientists. This is not a conspiracy set in motion by scientists to take down the king. This is not a conspiracy set up by doctors and nurses because they don’t like the emperor.
Trump is scared he’s going to lose the election in November so he is pitting us against each other to benefit himself. That’s all (that’s enough). It’s not just the flu, the annual flu that killed 80,000 people last year. It’s a “novel virusm” which has killed 85,000 people in less than three months. Truth. Truth! When Jesus began many of His parables as He was giving His sermons in-person, He would usually begin His statements with, “I tell you the truth ...” I’m powerless as I watch this draft-dodging coward (five times) destroy our nation. His first uttering that gave me pause was the insults he hurled at Capt. (Sen.) John McCain, USN in July 2015 when he said, “I don’t think people who were captured should be labeled as a “hero” (in the same war of these five deferments). That’s what did it for me. That was all it took. Dr. Richard Ryder Mechanicsville

CARPENTER CARPENTER, James "Carp," 55, of Mechanicsville, Va., departed this life on Thursday, May 14, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Carpenter; and a brother, Mike Carpenter. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Jackie Carpenter; four children, Michael Carpenter, Heather DeSimone (Joe), Brittany Pelletier (Chris) and Benjamin Carpenter; four grandchildren, Gabriella, James, John and Dani; his mother, Donna Carpenter; a brother, Steve Carpenter; and his "chosen" brother, Richard Conyers; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Jim "Carp" was an avid outdoorsman who loved the mountains, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed blacksmithing, woodworking and was a fabulous cook. He had a huge heart and guided many area youths as a camp counselor, sports coach and BSA Scoutmaster. But, without question, his
greatest joy came from his time spent with his family. He was a truly devoted husband, father and "Gramps." The family received friends Tuesday, May 19, 2020, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111, with a Catholic Rosary service held at 7 p.m. Interment was held 3 p.m. Friday May 22, 2020, at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Rd., Hanover, Va. 23069.
NICELY NICELY, Mary Elizabeth, 94, of Mechanicsville, Va., went to be with the Lord on May 11, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Stuart Alfred Nicely; her parents, Alonza Phillip and Mary LeGrande Jenkins; her sons-in-law, Larry Cornwell and Steve Estes. She is survived
by her three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Charlie Brown, Joan and Craig Martin, Mary "Pookie" Estes; 10 grandchildren, Laurie Walton (Bill), Jared Cornwell (Amy), Justin Cornwell (Rebecca), Jeffrey Cornwell (Tanya), Kerry Spruill (Matt), Drew Martin, Glenn Martin (Kelley), Ashley Farmer (Scott), Kyle Estes (Brittany), Jana Brown (Josh); 18 greatgrandchildren, five nieces and nephews; her dear friends, Mildred Rigsby and Carol Lynne Dean; and her two special sorority sisters, Helen and Ella. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and retired from the Virginia Employment Commission, where she was employed as an executive secretary. She was active for many years as a member of Alpha Iota International Business Sorority. Mary Elizabeth was a longtime, devoted member and elder of Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church. She and Stuart moved to Mechanicsville 41 years ago and loved being a part of this "close knit" community. Mary Elizabeth will forever be remembered for her selfless devotion to her family and friends, her delicious southern cooking, her love of Myrtle Beach and her amazing talent for sewing, knitting and crocheting. Her greatest joy came from being with her family, and she instilled in
each of them values of faith and love, as well as devotion to family and friends. The family wants to express their appreciation to Dr. Janney and his staff for the many years of care provided to Mary Elizabeth; and also to Nakwor, Sherryi and Marlo at Parkside-Beth Sholom; and Sheila, Andrea and Doris at Autumn Care. A memorial service celebrating Mary Elizabeth's life will be announced and held at a later date at Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church, 7339 Atlee Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church. STEELE, Gladys Trafieri, 89, died peacefully on May 6, 2020, surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Floyd; and survived by her children, Dorothy DeJong (Mike) and Floyd Steele Jr. (Beth); and grandchildren, Jonathan DeJong, Trey, Chase and Kate Steele. She was a graduate of St. Gertrude High School (Class of 1949) and proud of her Italian heritage. She was happiest taking care of her family and numerous friends, and she never met a stranger! The family is grateful for the services of Grace Hospice. Please consider doing an act of kindness in her memory.

Coraline Hollywood, 8, and her 6-year-old sister Emery entered their 5th year of skating with Ashland Artistic Figure Skating Team, but all competitions came to a quick halt with a pandemic, which resulted in Virginia’s executive order. In turn, their mom, Brittany Hollywood, started looking for alternative ways for the girls to continue skating and practicing their routines. By using roller skating classes live on Instagram with Roller Fit, the family has been able to practice new innovative jumps, spins and figures. This journey led them to excessive purchases for skates and protective gear. The girls and their mom have continued training with a simple wheel change from inside to outside use. Brittany, Coraline and Emery practice daily in their driveway and garage, as well as going to local parks. Brittany extended thanks to the Town of Ashland and Hanover County for accepting roller skaters. The Hollywoods are on Instagram at @hollywoodroolersisterz.

Reilly Egan is shown with one of the signs she is selling to help Tunnel To Towers. The signs cost $15.
ECHANICSVILLE – A 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is spearheading a project to thank local frontline workers, as well as provide meals, supplies, and more. Reilly Egan has started a Lawn Sign Fundraiser, which can be purchased at Venmo@ reillyegansigns. The cost is $15 and a description and address of where the sign will be delivered are needed. “We deliver your sign straight to your lawn,” she said. The sign measures 18” x 24”.
All profits are being donated to Tunnel To Towers, which provides meals for frontline workers and personal protective equipment. Also, if a health care worker loses his/her life to COVID-19, the organization will provide financial relief through mortgage payments on their family’s home. “Volunteering has always been an important aspect of
my life. Whether I’m doing something small to help a neighbor or something big, I live to serve others,” Reilly said. “When COVID-19 struck, the volunteering options I had were taken away. I wanted to do something to make a positive impact on those around me. I chose the foundation Tunnel To Towers because they support medical provid-
ers and first responders. This foundation is special to me and my family since my father is a retired fire chief,” she continued. “This organization provides necessary supplies and so much more for frontline workers and their families.” Reilly asks that the community purchase the signs for neighbors, family and see FRONTLINE, pg. 14

"Every year, the Hanover County Council of PTAs recognizes outstanding PTA volunteers within the Hanover community,” Hudes said. “While there are many people who volunteer countless hours to helping their PTA and schools, these individuals go above and beyond to make sure every student, parent and teacher have the resources to make their school experiences the best they can be. They often do much of this in the shadows but today we spotlight our 2019-2020 Volunteers of the Year!" Jackie McCaleb, principal at BPES, said, “Mrs. Minton has a passion for helping our school and community. She goes above and beyond the call of PTA president.” “Missy strives to help promote a positive culture at BPES with all families,” she continued. McCaleb also said about Minton, “She advocates for mental health and wellness of students and families. She is a true leader who makes everyone feel welcomed and special.” Of Jordan, SJMS principal Dr. Quentin Ballard said: “Ms. Jordan has exhibited a passion for volunteering and service in our school. Ms. Jordan is worthy of this honor because of her heart for educating, motivating, and inspiring kids.” “This year,” he said, “because of her efforts, we were able to take our college and career readiness efforts to a whole new level. Her heart for kids and unwavering will to do all things with excellent are refreshing,” Ballard added.

Social workers challenged with pandemic’s mental health issues Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND -- Although deemed “essential” by Gov. Ralph Northam early in the pandemic, social workers in Virginia remain underrecognized for their frontline heroism in supporting families and individuals experiencing mental health crises due to COVID-19 fallout, according to Executive Director Debra Riggs, CAE, longtime executive director of the Virginia Chapter, National Association of Social Workers (NASW). “It seems apropos that National Mental Health Awareness Month is in May during the possible peak of the pandemic across Virginia, since social workers statewide are seeing increasing mental health needs,” Riggs said.
“They are especially focused on helping vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, people with disabilities, and the chronically mentally ill. “Many people don’t understand what social workers do, but social workers make up the largest behavioral health profession in the country, and each day thousands of them form a nearly invisible frontline battalion — often at great risk themselves -- to help Virginians fight through the war on COVID-19,” she continues. “Frankly, they manage crises every day, regardless of a pandemic, since they deal with everything from addiction to trauma to abuse in our
schools, hospitals, you name it!” Social workers also have been key to expanding access to mental health services. Thanks to advocacy efforts by NASW, its Virginia Chapter, and their allies, federal and state officials have loosened telehealth regulations to enable more people to receive mental health services from video-based — and as of May 1, audio-only--devices such as smartphones and landlines. In addition, NASW Virginia is calling for the state to address the serious shortage of personal protective equipment for social workers — some of whom work in high-risk facilities or
homes — and to emphasize to employers that they cannot legally direct social workers to choose between working in unsafe conditions or be fired. “Social workers should contact NASW Virginia at 804-204-1339 if they are asked to work either with inadequate safety equipment or under threat of dismissal or discipline due to questions
jobs, and other COVID-19 outcomes.”’ ----As a state chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, the Virginia Chapter serves thousands of social workers embedded in schools, hospitals, clinics, government agencies, veteran facilities, and mental health facilities. Playgrounds, skate park open ASHLAND -- In conjunction with the executive orders of Governor Ralph Northam implementing Phase One of the Forward Virginia plan, which went into effect on Friday, May 15, the park playgrounds and Pole Green skate park are open. Be advised that amenities throughout the parks are not sanitized, so use with caution and follow the CDC health and safety guidelines. “We reiterate the critical importance of flowing physical distancing guidelines and avoidance of gatherings and group activities,” said Marcy G. Durrer, recreation program director for Hanover County Parks and Recreation. “At this time, all permitted use of athletic fields, picnic shelters and historic sites remain cancelled and all department-sponsored programs and activities are can-
about on-the-job safety,” said Riggs. “We want the public to know that social workers are part of the courageous brigade of health providers trained to assist them, and we want government officials to ensure social workers receive more regulatory, operational, and financial support to properly address mental health conditions emerging as a result of isolation, lost

In an adjoining section, a group of community engagement participants in the center’s Linking Lives program prepare for a day out in the community. The buzz is palpable. Participants with intellectual or developmental differences are eager to help with grocery and supply shopping for the center. A yoga class at nearby First Shiloh Baptist
Church may be on the agenda, or some time in community helping with Meals on Wheels deliveries. Others will stay in the center today, doing math skill building or learning more about their nutritional needs. Conversations are open for guests and other participants. Families, sports, news and friends are frequent topics in Linking Lives. There are
no strangers here, only new friends. That’s exactly what the staff wants to continue. An independent nonprofit agency, Hanover Adult Center has been helping families and caregivers for over 40 years. The services have delayed and prevented many hundreds of institutionalizations. Professional care for adults during the day has been a game changer for families who were stretched too thin trying to do it all. In those past four decades, there’s never been a time like this. The days of early March of this year were an anxious time. As COVID-19 became a bigger threat, staff doubled
down on already rigorous cleaning, sanitation, and protective procedures. Executive Director Diane Dillard, HR and Finance Director Cindy Dunnivan, and a volunteer board of directors saw the only way to be good stewards of the participant’s health was to do the unavoidable: temporarily suspend services. Staff contacted every family member or caregiver to discuss the decision with referrals ready for other services such as food pantries and in-home care. Closing was a tough call, but has helped ensure the health and safety of staff and see NONPROFIT, pg. 18

Barnhart joins Abbott and Trivett on town council By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ASHLAND – Anita Barnhart’s first venture into the world of politics proved quite successful, with the newcomer bringing in the most votes in last week’s Town of Ashland General Election. Incumbents Kathy Abbott and Steve Trivett, the current mayor, will be returning to Ashland Town Council. Three seats were available on the May 19 ballot. Barnhart tallied 386 votes, 27.18%; followed by Abbott, 368, 25.92%; and Trivett, 363, 25.56%. Also on the ballot for Ashland voters were Stephanie Renee Hare, 149 votes, 10.49%; David G. Goldstein, 101, 7.11%; D.A. Wooten, who came in with 46 votes, 3.24%; and write-in, 7, 0.49%. The election, originally scheduled for May 6, was delayed two weeks by order of Governor Ralph Northam due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Barnhart, who said in an article that appeared in this publication on May 13, said she decided to run for Ashland Town Council “to protect what makes Ashland special.” The day after her victory, she extended her thanks to “all of the people at the Hanover County Board of Elections and Ashland Town Hall for all their time and efforts to offer a variety of voting methods and do everything possible to ensure the safety of the voters. The poll workers did a great job!” She also thanked “the voters of Ashland for making the effort to get out and vote in person, or to vote absentee bal-
lot. As an Ashlander, I was very proud of our turnout.” Barnhart said she is “honored” to have been “chosen by the people to serve as a member of Ashland Town Council, and I look forward to working with the other council members and the great staff of our town government.” She said her campaign promise was “to work to protect what makes Ashland special and that’s what I plan to do.” A lifelong educator who spent most of her 30 years in Hanover County Public Schools, Barnhart said those skills prepared her well to serve on town council. She is a community volunteer at the Ashland Theatre and said she understands the town’s unique combination of distinctive neighborhoods. As she prepared to take a seat at the council table, Barnhart expressed an appreciation for Ashland’s strong government, outstanding services, and government officials and employees who are truly interested in serving the citizens. Abbott said of her reelection: “I’m so touched by the outpouring of support for my candidacy and the vote of confidence in re-electing me to town council. I’m excited to continue to build on the foundation and initiatives that council and staff have worked on tirelessly in recent years.” She noted, “We’ve been sidetracked by this truly unprecedented moment [COVID-19] in history, and, for the immediate future, our focus will be on recovery and trying to maintain the high level of service we all have come to rely on. And of course, assisting those residents

and businesses left most vulnerable by this pandemic.” Abbott is, however, “confident that Ashland will emerge on the other side of this stronger, closer, and more determined than ever to shine like the diamond we are.” She extended congratulations to Mayor Steven Trivett on his re-election, and welcomes Anita Barnhart to town council “A big thank you to candidates Stephanie Renee Hare, David Goldstein for stepping up to serve,” Abbott added. She also offered “a special, heartfelt nod to the Hanover County Voter Registration & Elections Office that went above and beyond to plan and arrange a safe voting experience for our residents.” Abbott became an Ashland resident in 2003, because, she said, she was “drawn to the town’s sense of community and its eclectic mix of people, businesses and events.” Her community involve-
ment is extensive, including the Ashland Community Theatre Foundation, Hanover Arts and Activities Center, the Ashland Museum, Main Street Ashland Association (now Downtown Ashland Association), the Ashland Museum, Train Day, Ashland Musical Variety Show, and countless years on the PTA. The four-year member of town council recognizes the fiscal responsibility, economic development and preservation of the small-town character. “But, those are things that the town has prioritized since I moved here, and I’m so impressed with our staff for their creativity and initiative to keep that momentum.” As he looks to his next term on council, Trivett said, “Obviously, we have goals and responsibilities that pre-date COVID-19 and will be attended to in due time. But, for now, a number of initiatives need to be ‘on hold’ while we look over our community and see what
we can do to help.” He described Election Day as “cool, breezy, and occasionally rainy -- not to mention COVID-19. But democracy proved stronger than the virus!” “An amazing number of absentee ballots were mailed in,” Trivett said. He also praised “an excellent team of Election Officials and volunteers, (thank you Hanover County Registrar Teri Smithson), worked the driveup voting flawlessly, and other citizens walked in to vote to all together.” He said the turnout was “greater than I expected.” “As a candidate, the day starts at 6 a.m. and runs to 7 p.m. But, it moved along just fine talking with old and new friends and the other candidates. We’re competitors on the ballot but on the same team in wanting to serve our community,” Trivett said.” My hat is off to Stephanie Hare, D. A. Wooten and David Goldstein and their zeal to
serve. I congratulate Kathy Abbott on her re-election! Glad she and I can serve together another term.” In congratulating Anita Barnhart, he said the retired teacher and librarian “taught a course” on campaigning. “For me, I’m truly honored to have another opportunity to serve. But, celebration is temporary as I expect individuals, families, and businesses impacted by the pandemic are not as concerned about who is on council, but on how council can support all of Ashland in surviving and once again thriving as a community,” he added. “We will continue looking for each and every avenue that serves to get our lives and our community back on an upward trajectory -- together!” Trivett said. He has served on town council since 2012 and is in his second year as mayor. His community services includes: volunteer fireman, Hanover’s Family Life Education Team, Hanover Habitat for Humanity, Hanover County Community Services Board, Ashland’s Board of Zoning Appeals, Ashland’s Planning Commission, and Hanover County’s Planning Commission for the Ashland District. In returning to council, Trivett’s goals are to help citizens, businesses and the town recover economically from the effects of COVID-19. He also said that he would “continue to ensure we equitably serve all the town, continue striving to enhance quality of life, continue excellent services, and limit taxation while keep-

In preparing for Election Day while being mindful of COVID-19, Smithson and her staff “developed an action plan in partnership with Matt Reynal, assistant town manager, that outlined the precautions we took and the implementation of expanding the curbside (drive-up) voting.” Eighty-two voters cast their ballot from their vehicle, Smithson said, and 215 inside the precinct, which means 28% of in-person voters stayed in their vehicles, and voted curb-

What’s that noise? The 17-year-old cicadas are back Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com BLACKSBURG -- With warm daytime weather and mild nights upon us, you may find yourself opening a window to enjoy the cool spring air. But accompanying this breeze will be a cacophonous whining like a field of out-oftune car radios. That can only mean one thing: The cicadas are back. This year, that alien-like wail of the insect world will be even more pronounced, as millions of cicadas from brood IX emerge after 17 years underground. “Communities and farms with large numbers of cicadas emerging at once may have a substantial noise issue,” predicts Eric Day, Virginia Cooperative Extension entomologist in Virginia Tech’s Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “Hopefully, any annoyance at the disturbance is tempered by just how infrequent — and amazing — this event is.” The scale of these emergence events is astounding, with as many as 1.5 million cicadas emerging per acre. Each periodical cicada brood covers a specific geographical region, with some areas overlapping. This year brood IX spans Southwest Virginia, parts of North Carolina, and West Virginia. People who live in these regions will experience a unique natural phenomenon that has not occurred in most of the area since 2003-04 (some of the region overlaps with Brood II, which emerged in 2013). Cicadas — large, clear-winged insects with bulbous eyes — occur either annually (every year) or periodically (every 13 or 17 years) depending on the species. Periodical cicadas spend most of their lives as immatures, called nymphs, living in the soil and feeding on tree roots. The iconic brown husks of the cicada,
which can be found on trees and structures, are left behind as the nymphs construct mud tubes to crawl out of the soil toward a high place to molt for the last time. The transition from soil dwelling nymphs to mature adults is synchronized based on the year and temperature of
the soil, allowing for all of a brood to emerge together to breed and lay eggs. The timing of a 13- or 17-year cycle is one of the great mysteries of the insect world. Research and mathematical modeling suggest that the length of these brood cycles could be attributed to predatory avoidance. When the cicadas emerge, the amount of biomass they provide could serve as a food source for potential predators to take advantage of. It is theorized that these cicadas have evolved to avoid synching up with predator cycles by having a 13- or 17-year prime number emergence interval. The periodic nature and synchronous emergence of these broods facilitates the mating and egg laying habits of the insect. The noise we hear is the mating call of the males who are attempting to attract females. For most people, the droning song of the cicada is nothing more than a slight annoyance, or fascination, especially with these large broods that only appear roughly once every two decades. For ornamental tree growers, and orchard and vineyard managers,
this sound signals potential danger to their juvenile trees, vines, and saplings. “Cicadas can occur in overwhelming numbers and growers in predicted areas of activity should be watchful” said Doug Pfeiffer, a professor and Extension specialist in the Department
gists suggest that tree growers avoid planting new trees in the year or two before large periodical cicada emergences in their area. While potential treatment options exist, from netting to sprays, few of these have a lasting effect on cicada egg laying. The most effective method for
of Entomology. Cicadas do not pose a danger to these plants through feeding, but instead through their egglaying habits. Cicada females select pencil-width branches or vines and then implant their eggs into them using a sharp egg laying tube called an ovipositor. The nymphs then hatch from the eggs and drop down to burrow into the soil where they begin harmlessly feeding on the plants’ roots. The egg implantation causes the branch or vine to split and wither, a phenomenon known as “flagging” where a group of leaves on an otherwise healthy part of the plant turn brown and die. For a small tree or young vine, too many flagging sections can stunt their growth or even kill them outright. Fortunately, the timeline for mitigating the impact of cicada egg laying is very short, as broods tend to have four-to-six weeks of activity before the generation dies off. Many entomolo-
reducing the potential economic damage these insects can cause would be for growers to plan ahead for their emergence. Even if you are not a fruit tree grower or vineyard manager, it is likely you will experience some sign of these cicadas. You may hear them, find their cast skins on trees, or even see them congregating. While large, cicadas do not bite, and are largely harmless, even to cats and dogs. This emergence, as well as the emergence of Brood X next year, are natural occurring events entomologists have been looking forward to for years. “This insect is really fascinating, and if you don’t have fruit trees or grapevines to protect, you can enjoy this phenomenon while it lasts,” suggests Pfeiffer. For more information, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s factsheet on periodical cicadas is found at https://www.pubs.ext. vt.edu/444/444-276/444-276.html. Additionally, Pfeiffer runs a Virginia Fruit Insect Updates blog with all the latest on cicadas in our area.
