Justin Roerink, principal at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology (THCTT), is the Hanover County Public Schools winner of the 2021-2022 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership by The Community Foundation. As a recipient, Roerink will receive $30,000 in grants – a $10,000 unrestricted cash grant and $20,000 to be used to build a greenhouse at The Hanover Center, developing a farm-to-table concept for the school’s culinary program that will pave the way for many learning opportunities for students in the program and beyond. One principal from each school division in the counties of Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield, as well as the City of Richmond, receives the award annually. It serves to recognize principals who “go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment.” The school community and the public submit the nominations. “I am very humbled and honored to be the recipient of this recognition. I have served at The Hanover Center for 12 years and, to me, this is a recognition of the incredible faculty, staff and administration for all the team has done over the years to strive to prepare every student every day for future success,” said Roerink, who also serves as the coordinator of HCPS’s Career

and Technical Education and Workforce Development. “It is also a recognition of our fantastic students and families who have been involved in our programs over the years. In addition, we have had tremendous support from our business partners who have been critical to the successes of our programs through curriculum input, guest speaking opportunities and workbased learning opportunities for our students.” “We have also had phenomenal support from Dr. Gill, senior staff, central office staff, our school board and board of supervisors,” Roerink said. “I am very blessed to serve with fantastic people who work tirelessly to create real-world, hands-on experiences for our students so students are prepared to succeed in their future careers.”
Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of schools, surprised Roerink with the news of his recognition during a meeting with principals from across the school division. “Mr. Roerink is an innovative leader whose passion for career and technical education is evident in the relevant and engaging instruction that students receive at The Hanover Center,” Gill said. “This is a well-deserved recognition, and we are fortunate to have educators like Mr. Roerink working to ensure all of our students are life-ready, productive and responsible citizens who enrich the communities they serve.” Roerink, a Florida State University and Old Dominion University alumnus, said his favorite part of being a principal is seeing students learning see TRADE CENTER, pg. 12

A season of revived community celebration By Christina Amano Dolan Editor
S
ome of my favorite childhood memories were the modest yet vibrant events that were held each year at the hub of my hometown. My favorite time of the year was Halloween, with the center of our town, Great Falls, Virginia, decked out in decorative lights, pumpkins, inflatable Halloween characters and more. The event would attract a crowd of families to the center of the town, with local businesses setting up festive booths and stands outside their storefronts and greeting every child that passed by with a handful of candy. Of course, there would be an occasional toothbrush kit from the local dentist or box of raisins from the neighborhood doctor, but it was the warmth of their gift giving that made the evening so special.
While the joy of running home with two bags full of goodies was one of the most exciting parts of the annual gathering, I can vividly recall the spirited feeling of connectivity among neighbors. It always seemed as if everyone in town left their homes to wander around every sidewalk, storefront and neighborhood to greet residents and meet new friends for the night. Children would run around, hop into wagons pulled by our parents or jump on bikes to explore the town in aimless fun. These are the memories of my childhood that made me feel most connected to my small community, as it always seemed as if there were no true strangers among the crowd of residents. For this one night of the year, everyone could assemble in the heart of the community for an evening of light entertainment and socializing, and it always created an energetic atmosphere that fueled a sense of pride and appreciation for our hometown. While we would hold similar gatherings for
headline holidays, such as an annual Fourth of July fireworks display, our calendar years were never as jam-packed with community bashes on the scale of Hanover County. This has become one of the most exciting discoveries since I first started with The Mechanicsville Local as editor. As I have been meeting with community event organizers and mingling with residents, I have learned of the impressive amount of annual events that have celebrated the community and its rich history for decades. I frequently speak with folks who gush about Hanover staples such as the Strawberry Faire, Ashland Train Day and Hanover Tomato Festival. I love how their eyes often light up when I admit I have yet to experience them for myself, as if they are in on an important secret and can’t wait for me to learn it, too. There seems to be an added buzz of excitement see SEASON, pg. 7
Changing connectedness: from party lines to smart phones By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist At the first hint of a ring, my sister and I would fight for position as we raced toward the kitchen and a single telephone attached to the wall. We didn’t have any idea who might be calling, and we most certainly weren’t expecting any calls, but the thought of who might be on the other end of
the phone opened an endless world of possibilities. It’s hard to imagine these days, as so much of the world’s population carries a smart phone and stays connected 24/7, and the thought of not having a phone prompts anxiety and a crisis situation only minutes later at my house. It’s a far cry from that first wall unit that evoked such excitement for

us in the mid 1950s. When I told my children that we had a party line back in those days, they had no idea what I was talking about. They found it hard to believe that we had once shared a single connection with two families who lived next door to each other. Those early days were not ideal, but the simple act of answering the phone was somehow exciting,
even if some of the calls were intended for your neighbor. I suppose it’s hard to believe that phones were once used for direct oneto-one communication, and make no doubt, the ability to communicate via wire was a giant step in technology. Rotary phones introduced in the 1920s connected communities axnd families, see PHONES, pg. 7

Reader praises FY2023 budget Dear Editor, When I refer to March “madness,” I’m referring to that annual event that I look forward to every year: budget season for our county. Hanover’s proposed FY2023 budget embodies the vision of a group of people I’ll call “Team Hanover;” citizens who lend their voices to address community needs and issues that affect their quality of life, service providers who labor to ensure a safe community and the quality of life that we expect and deserve, administrators, staff and our elected officials who execute and manage those services, ensuring that community needs are met affordably. This budget includes a salary increase for those who work for our community, who serve our needs and those who protect us, such as personnel like the Sheriff ’s, Fire-EMS, public works, public utilities and health departments (among many others). Hanover citizens are fortunate to reside and do business in a community that offers the high quality of life and amenities that many other communities envy and seek to emulate. Now for the really good news: county administrator John A. Budesky’s proposed budget maintains the current real estate tax rate of 81 cents per hundred dollars of assessed value, which is the lowest of all of the neighboring jurisdictions. The other good news (or bad, depending on your point of view) is that real estate values reflected in assessments have risen, which means your property is worth more. Yes, the cost of owning a home in Hanover County is rising, which is a reflection of the times. Median home sale prices in Hanover rose 8.2 % over last year. The down side of that is that your tax bill will be a bit higher beginning in the second half of this see LETTERS, pg. 22

of teamwork. The Meritorious Service Award is given to employees who have made significant contributions to the sheriff’s office or the safety of citizens. It is also given to individuals who enhance the sheriff’s office’s image within the law enforcement community, Hanover County or the Commonwealth of Virginia. The recipients of this award are: Michael Burch, Jason Butterworth, Lonnie Carter, Peter Chapman, Derek Healy, Ray Hooper, Rusty Miller, Gina Parknow, Walter Raikes, Bill Shaw, Robby Stevens, Seth Whitmore, Shane Wickham, Charlie Pavie, Jenna Dages, Van Jenkins, Troy Leszczynski, Steven Newsome, Stephen Wade, Robert Wagner, Donald Davis, Maricel Fister, Ashlee Passmore, Toni Harris, Robbie Hess, Dante Hill, Kevin Martin and Patrick Murphy. “One of the things that make us such a special agency is the men and women you saw here tonight,” Hines said in his closing remarks. “They are tremendous men and women, and I am so

eventually changing the way a nation communicated. The major change to the telephones we grew up with happened in 1973 when a Motorola executive made the first cell phone call to a competitor announcing the new technology. Marty Cooper told 60 Minutes he made the call in midtown Manhattan while walking across the street where he was almost hit by a cab. I suppose there’s a first time for everything. It took another 10 years for the technology to become available to the public in a model the manufacturer boasted weighed only 30 ounces. As we entered the 2000s, cell phones that featured cameras were introduced, and the iPhone and Android smart phones premiered in 2007. The ability to share images fueled the social media explosion as customers shared images and phones became a useful resource for documenting events, telling a story or sharing our lives with the world.

in the air when locals talk about these extravagant events coming back after the social calendar desert that was past few years of the COVID-19 pandemic. proud to work with them.” Hines reiterated his appreciation for Hanover County during his closing remarks with residents, elected leaders, law enforcement and the community as a whole working together to ensure the safety of citizens. Melissa Haley, Emma Lee Mitchell and Dave Fuller of the Hanover Chamber Foundation stepped to the podium at the conclusion of the ceremony to present a $15,000 donation check to the sheriff’s office as a token of their appreciation. “It is our privilege and our delight for our organization to partner with the sheriff’s office for nine years now,” Fuller said. “This is a celebration and is a special occasion for the award recipients that you have met tonight, for their families and for all the men and women in our sheriff’s office.” They additionally thanked the event sponsors for supporting the foundation’s appreciation reception for award recipients and attendees, which was held at the Hanover Tavern following the awards ceremony as an extension of the evening’s celebration.
Racing against my sister to answer a ringing phone offered little insight to how that invention would change lives in our foreseeable future, or the impact that telephones would play in almost every aspect of our lives. We share family photos, schedule important meetings, pay bills or even visit the doctor via smart phones, and, yes, even once in a while, receive that traditional Sunday night phone call from distant family members. But, there’s no arguing the fact the excitement of a ringing phone isn’t what it used to be. We now pick and choose which calls to accept and which to mute. The evolution of the phone allows us to be connected and available almost anytime, a condition some value and others despise. And for those of us who still miss the feel of a rotary dial, or the distinct sound of a universal ring that could not be altered by a single flick in the settings, the memory of five digit phone numbers or party lines is just a remembered blip on the technological timeline and development of an invention that truly changed our world. point. While many of us will experience them for the first time this spring and summer, it will be incredible to witness these grand events welcomed back with enthusiasm by community members. With a reignited hope for the future and appreciation for unity, I am excited at the possibility of reliving the feelings of connectedness and being part of something special that I remember from my childhood, only now it will be through the eyes of an adult.

due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hanover Community Support Services (HCSS) held its fourth annual Miss Hanover Abilities Pageant last month. The event was held at Mechanicsville High School and drew together a crowd of between 150 and 200 attendees in support of the contestants and the HCSS mission. HCSS is a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to citizens with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges and substance use disorders. Savannah said she was surprised when she was crowned as this year’s Miss Hanover Abilities and was overcome with emotion when they announced her name. “To hear the crowd clapping for me felt so amazing,” Savannah said. “I just felt so proud of myself afterwards and I just had amazing family and friends.” This year’s pageant featured 10 contestants from Hanover and surrounding areas with developmental disabilities aged 13 years and up. The contestants this year were Lori
Brunson, Ashley D’Evegnee, Brianna Daniel, Brenna Fennelly, Amber Gillend, Julia Reese Klauer, Savannah Liggan, Cassie Rodriguez, Mackenzie Webb and Haley Woodward. The 2022 Miss Hanover Abilities first runner-up is Mackenzie Webb and the second runner-up is Amber Gillend. Proceeds from the pageant go toward the many services that HCSS provides, including offering scholarships to Hanover County High School seniors. HCSS offers two $1,000 scholarships for seniors who plan to go into professional fields that serve or benefit individuals with developmental disabilities, substance use or mental health issues. A third scholarship is offered to a high school senior that faces adversity themselves. HCSS will also donate $2,500 this year to Young Life Capernaum, which is a ministry for teens with intellectual and physical disabilities that aims to provide these individuals with fun, adventurous and friendship-building experiences with an annual summer camp and other activities. HCSS president Ashley White said the pageant went “above and beyond on so many expectations and

their favorite contestant’s jar or through a QR code. Savannah Liggan won the Fan Favorite title this year. The pageant also received support from its title sponsor, Riverwood Events and Catering, along with other local sponsors. “Of course it’s nice that it serves as a fundraiser, but it’s more about the girls and their experience,” White said. “And the whole purpose that we created the event was to shine a light on the special needs community and show people what these girls are really capable of.” The contestants’ overall scores are judged under four categories: a five-minute private interview with the judges prior to the event, casual wear, talent and an evening gown contest. Contestants performed an opening number at the beginning of the pageant choreographed by White that was not included in their overall scores. White said they select two special education teachers, two pageant individuals and a community volunteer as judges each year. This year’s judges were Susie Hinshaw of Chickahominy Middle School, Sara Salvato of Mechanicsville High School, Kimberly Kirby, the 2014 Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen Casey Shepard and Taylor Waller. “And we try to choose people that we know either have a heart for the special needs community or their personality would just mesh really well with that type of event,” White said. Each contestant is paired with a “buddy” that guides them throughout the pageant process as much as the contestant wants or needs. Every buddy is a volunteer community member who is typically matched with a contestant that they share a connection with, such as attending the same school. Savannah was paired with Audrey Beckett, a fellow Atlee High Student. “The pageant was amazing. I really did have a lot of fun,” Savannah said. “My partner was the best... it is so great to have a friend just like her.” Savannah sung “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus during the talent portion of the evening. Other performances by contestants included singing, dancing, cheerleading and a PowerPoint presentation showcasing arts and crafts. Savannah said performing in front of the audience felt “amazing” with many of her best friends, family members and other supporters cheering her on. Savannah’s mom, Amborah, expressed how proud she was of her daughter’s performance
and the other contestants, many of whom are Savannah’s friends from either Young Life Capernaum or River City Stars, which is a nonprofit cheerleading program for individuals with special needs in Central Virginia. “I would not have wanted to be in these judges’ shoes… because these girls were all amazing,” Amborah said. “I was so proud of each and every one of those girls because they did what I could never have done.” White said in addition to shining a light on the girls’ talents, the pageant helps build confidence in the contestants. She heard from every mom this year about the growth in their daughters’ confidence from just the Friday night rehearsal to Saturday’s pageant, with many of the girls “being totally independent on stage, shining, not having any fears and getting up there and having a great time.” White said they aim to treat everyone “like queens for the day,” with the girls’ hair and makeup professionally done, opening number outfits provided, special interviews conducted and even offering every contestant their own tiara during the crowning ceremony. The hosts offer kind remarks to each contestant and their abilities as they’re crowned by their “buddies.” “It’s nice to be the winner, but we really want it to be about the overall experience – the confidence building, the friendships they gain and the opportunity to showcase their talents,” White said. As the 2022 Miss Hanover Abilities, Savannah will likely participate in a number of community events similar to previous queens, such as the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade, Ashland Christmas Parade, the Ashland Fourth of July Parade and the Strawberry Faire. She has also been accepted into the capABLE Campaign, which is an annual initiative that features a series of photographs and interviews of thriving Richmond residents with diverse abilities and viewpoints. Savannah said she most looks forward to encouraging others with what they have been through as the new Miss Hanover Abilities. “She’s got a big heart and loves to help others,” Amborah said. Savannah also has an abundance of hobbies such as participating in basketball, baseball, soccer, cheerleading and horseback riding throughout the year. She said one of her favorite things to do is hang out with her friends, who offer her great encouragement and support. She encourages girls who are interested in signing up next year to give it a try, have fun and be themselves. The Universe from the Center: James Webb Space Telescope update By Dr. George Spagna Special to Ashland-Hanover Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at Randolph-Macon College will continue pandemic restrictions at the present time, with anticipated reopening for public viewing in the spring. Watch the web site (https:// www.rmc.edu/keeble) for updates. Or call the Keeble Information line at 804-752-3210. If you need to speak with someone immediately, please call Dr. Michael Rodruck at 804-752-7344.
T
he recent unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate almost led me to use this column to rant about why that’s a bad idea. I’ll spare you for now, at least for a couple of months to discuss timekeeping and calendars and how they link to astronomy. This month I want to give another update on progress toward making the James Webb Space Telescope fully operational. I said last month that operators were making fine adjustments on the alignment of the 16 mirror segments that make up the primary mirror. Each piece has to bring light from the source to the same point in the image plane. The first pre-tuning image showed, not surprisingly, 16 separate images of the faint target star. Here’s what we have now (image courtesy NASA and Space Telescope Science Institute): The central part of the image is now the overexposed infrared image of a single faint star. The “diffraction spikes” are attributed to
the fact that when light waves pass through a narrow aperture they spread out in a predictable way, inversely proportional to the size of the aperture. The particular aperture here was a hexagonal “mask” used to block light from other stars. The diffraction here demonstrates that the alignment is physically as good as it can be and this instrument is now “diffraction limited,” providing the best angular resolution physically possible. Over the coming weeks and months there will be further verification of the alignment as each separate instrument is brought into the image plane. The other spots of light around the central image are distant galaxies, which will ultimately be among the primary targets for this magnificent telescope. Lunar phases for April: New Moon on April 1 at 2:24 a.m.; First Quarter on April 9 at 2:48 p.m.; Full Moon on April 17 at 2:55 a.m.; and Last Quarter on April 23 at 7:56 a.m. All times are Eastern Daylight. The Lyrid meteor shower peaks on April 22 and 23, so the Moon will be providing some interference. To get a better view, find a spot away from city or town lights and look after midnight. Mercury returns to evening dusk, low to the west northwest, about 10 degrees off the horizon at sunset. Venus, Mars and Saturn are visible in morning twilight. Look southwest before sunrise. Venus is about 10 degrees above the horizon, the brightest “star” you will see. Mars and Saturn are above and to the left. Jupiter rises just ahead of sunrise, so you’ll not likely see it due to any horizon clutter. About two hours after sunset at mid-month, your view to zenith will not be much. Leo Minor is overhead, but as the name sug-
gests, it is not a prominent constellation, and there are no really bright stars to call it to attention. Not so as your attention moves south from zenith. Leo himself is about 70 degrees above the southern horizon with bright Contributed photo Regulus at the Lion’s Telescope alignment evaluation heart and Denebola at image the tail. That bright star setting to the southwest is Sirius, which is actually the brightest star visible from Earth (other than the Sun). Orion is setting to the west-southwest. Before it finally disappears, use bright red Betelgeuse to find Castor and Pollux in Gemini. They will be directly above Betelgeuse at about 50 degrees. To the north, the familiar asterism of the Big Dipper in the constellation Ursa Major hangs inverted and high above Polaris. You can find the Pole Star by following the two end stars in the “bowl” of the dipper toward the horizon. If readers have questions about astronomy in particular (or science in general) that you would like covered in one of these columns, contact gspagna@rmc.edu. (I have retired from RandolphMacon College, but will continue these columns and use of this email address for the foreseeable future.)

Habitat celebrates completion of 74th home By Christina Amano Dolan Editor

anover and King William Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of its 74th home last week after over five months of construction. Habitat members gathered to perform a home dedication ceremony in honor of the Palomino family’s brand new Ashland home and their inspiring journey to homeownership. Renee Robinson, executive director of Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity, began the ceremony by welcoming attendees and offering an overview of Habitat’s mission. “Our vision is everyone has a decent place to live,” Robinson said. “And we do that in this community through our Homeownership Program and our Critical Repairs program.” The Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program offers qualified community members the chance to become homeowners while ensuring their long-term success through homeownership classes on home maintenance, financial planning, mortgage and more. With the help of community support and donations, Habitat is able to subsidize the cost of land for the family and keep their monthly mortgage at an affordable rate. In addition, Habitat is able to offset the cost of construction with a primarily volunteer labor force. “And we really walk alongside families like the Palominos,” Robinson said. “They are hardworking and absolutely deserving of the

home that they have now purchased from Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity.” Alejandro, Rosila, Danae and Diego Palomino contributed over 300 hours of sweat equity in partnering with Habitat, exceeding the required minimum of 200 hours of sweat equity, Robinson said. Sweat equity includes both assisting in the construction of the home and attending homeownership classes. “We are just as honored to have been able to walk alongside you all in this journey and thank you for letting us be a part of that,” Robinson said to the Palomino family. The Palomino’s journey to homeownership began in 2002, when Alejandro Palomino fled violence in Peru in search of a new life for his family in the U.S. He worked tirelessly for many years with the dream of bringing his two children and wife to the country. After finally reuniting in 2014, the family

sought a quiet community to settle down in and selected Ashland as their new residence. On Oct. 15, 2021, the united Palomino family dug their shovels into the soil of what would become their new Habitat home. On March 28, the family stood before their completed home with Habitat members in celebration of their remarkable achievements and future prosperity. Diego could not be in attendance for the dedication ceremony, as he is currently enrolled in community college classes. Jon Gibson, pastor of The Branch Church in Ashland, performed a scripture reading during the ceremony and litany of dedication to the house in both English and Spanish, honoring the Palomino family’s native language. Attendees joined in during the litany reading to offer dedications to the house. The scripture reading was followed by a ceremonial candle lighting, with Alejandro
lighting a candle alongside his wife, Rosila, and daughter, Danae. “I hope this will light your new home, and we know that you and your family will really be the light of joy in this home going forward,” Robinson said to the family. Jennifer McDuffee, Habitat finance and administrative assistant, presented the family with housewarming gift baskets donated by community members and local businesses. The gifts included a donated basket of sheets, rugs, mats and shower curtains by Kim Jennings; a basket of cleaning supplies gifted by Jane Adams; a basket of garden supplies gifted by The First Baptist Church in Ashland, and an assortment of small appliances including a toaster, coffee maker, slow cooker and hand mixer by Hamilton Beach. In addition, McDuffee presented Habitat’s own gift basket featuring symbolic offerings and best wishes so that
the family will flourish in their new home. “We give you bread so that your home may never know hunger,” McDuffee said. “We give you salt so your life always has flavor, a candle so you always have light through the darkest of times and wood so your home has stability, harmony and peace.” After Robinson officially handed over the house keys to the Palomino family, Alejandro, Rosila and Danae cut the ceremonial ribbon that hung over the porch of their new home. A round of applause followed as Habitat members offered congratulations to the family. Alejandro offered final remarks to the attendees in Spanish, which were translated by Gibson. “We’re very grateful for everything, to learn and plan for the place where we live and to have confidence in how to take care of the house,” Gibson said on behalf of Alejandro.
“We are very grateful to Habitat for Humanity. Thank you.” Habitat will continue to offer support to the Palomino family as they navigate homeownership moving forward. “Thank you for being a part of this and we’re just happy to be able to finish our 74th home,” Robinson said to attendees. With its 74th home completed, Habitat is currently in the process of constructing its 75th home located on Old Telegraph Road in Ashland. Applications for Habitat’s traditional Homeownership Program are paused due to a shortage of affordable land. Applications are temporarily open to two sets of qualified applicants who currently own land but cannot afford to build a home on their own property. Hamlin claws way to front for Cup win By Robby Fletcher Richmond Suburban News RICHMOND — Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin has had a rough start to 2022. Normally, by this time in the season he is near the top in points standings. Often, he has had a victory or two by April, or at least several top-10 finishes. But not so this year. Until Sunday at Richmond Raceway. Hamlin, who spent most of the Toyota Owners 400 out of the top 10, pulled in front with five laps to go to steal a crucial first-place finish for his first victory of the season. “Just drove as hard as I could,” Hamlin said after his late push toward the finish line. “Just so proud of this whole FedEx Camry team, man, just never giving up. There was no doubt in my mind, maybe just a little, but they got this car right there towards the end. Wow, unbelievable.” The victory is Hamlin’s fourth win and 20th top-10 finish in 31 races at Richmond Raceway, and much of the credit for his finish goes to excellent pit stop strategy that gave him fresh tires to close out the shorttrack race. The win, Hamlin says, is one he hopes gives the team momentum after its tough season start. “I don’t want to look too far ahead because I certainly want to celebrate this one,” Hamlin said. “It sure is a positive sign considering how we ran as an organization at Phoenix.” In the Ruoff Mortgage
500 in Phoenix on March 13, Hamlin started second but finished 13th. Pulling in second behind Hamlin Sunday was Kevin Harvick, who posted his 28th top-10 finish in 42 races at Richmond and his third top10 finish in 2022. In the final lap, Hamlin had to hold off a furious sprint for first from Harvick, who fell just behind in the final stretch. “The lapped cars there kind of got in the way, and I lost a little bit of ground,” Harvick said. “Still a great day for us, just hopefully a little momentum in a positive direction.” Rounding out the top-5 were drivers William Byron, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Larson. Truex led on four separate occasions for 80 laps and was also in contention to win the race at the end, but he ultimately had to settle for fourth. “It’s frustrating,” he said. “But that’s part of it here. It’s part of the whole day. Obviously we did good there for a while.” Ryan Blaney started the race off in pole position after a strong performance in his Team Penske Ford Mustang in practice and in qualifying. Blaney won Stage 1 and led through Lap 129 for the longest leading run of the day; the stage victory was his third of the season. Blaney, with 241 points, is now tied at the top of the points standings with Chase Elliott. There were three cautions during the course of the 400-lap race, with one coming in Stage 1 see HAMLIN, pg. 25

Huesman throws no-hitter against Raiders Mustang baseball beats Cavaliers By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND — Hanover pitcher Levi Huesman was determined that he, not Atlee’s hitters, was going to own the plate when the two teams met at Hanover Wednesday. He did. Huesman allowed just two baserunners while throwing a no-hitter in an 11-0, five-inning win over the Raiders. Huesman struck out 13 of the 17 batters he faced. He threw 51 strikes out of 67 pitches. He and Hawk catcher mixed up the pitch selection and placement to keep the Raiders off balance. By the time it was over, only two Atlee batters reached base, one hit by pitch, the other on a throwing error. “Levi’s worked really hard this offseason along with the rest of our guys,” said Hanover head baseball coach Tyler Kane. “Going out against Atlee, he had command of all three of his pitches. He primarily threw his fastball, slider. I think his velocity was 92 to 95 with command, so it made it difficult for Atlee. “Any time you can command a fastball in the low-tomid 90s, it’s not an easy thing to hit. We were fortunate that Levi had his “A” stuff and we provided him with some runs early on as well.” The Raiders do bring plenty of offense. “Atlee always has great players. This year’s no different,” Kane said. “They’ve got a really strong lineup with (Turner) Fitzpatrick and (Landon) Scott

Hanover pitcher Levi Huesman, shown here against Mechanicsville last year, no-hit Atlee in an 11-0 victory in five winnings Wednesday. Huesman’s bid for a perfect game was spoiled by an error on a bunt by Atlee’s Chay Balderson that allowed Balderson to reach third.
and (Chase) Sanford, and there’s several other seniors in that lineup. So they’re senior heavy and they’re really good players. “But like I said, when Levi’s got his ‘A’ stuff, he’s really tough to hit. They battle in the box.” Huesman got a lot of help from his battery mate, Hanover catcher Cannon Peebles. In a rarity for high school, even college, players, Peebles calls the pitches. “This year, so far, Cannon Peebles has called the games for Levi,” Kane said. “Hunter Hoy and Yuri Namkoong, two of our assistants, have done it in the past. This year we’ve given Cannon and Levi autonomy to call their own games. Cannon’s

a senior, and he’s learned from Coach Hoy and Coach Namkoong the last couple of years. We have all the confidence in the world in him calling the games for ur pitchers.” Offensively, the Hawks were led by Seth Keller, who hit a home run in two atbats, scored two runs with three RBIs. Peebles, Nolan Williamson, Charlie Rohr and Chase Hustead went 2-for3. Williamson had two RBIs; Peebles and Rohr had one. Peebles, Rohr and Cole Elrod each hit a double, with Elrod knocking in three runs. Elsewhere, on March 29 Mechanicsville’s baseball team visited King William, which in
the past has given the Mustangs their share of trouble. But the Cavaliers were no trouble. Mustang pitchers Cole Nicely and Matthew Duke combined for a 16-0 shutout. “Our guys are doing what they need to do,” said Mechanicsville head baseball coach Tyler Johnson. “They’re hitting and they’re throwing strikes. So we’re off to a good start.” Mechanicsville lost a number of seniors to graduation last year, and Johnson has a stable of young arms that have yet to be tested. So far, however, with a 8-2 win over Caroline Saturday, they’re passing their quizzes — if not outright tests.

“We’re trying to do our best with getting them good reps early,” Johnson said. “We’re trying to get them into some serious reps . . . so they’ll be ready
later in the season. But they’re going to be okay.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Gibbs muscles way to win in Xfinity race By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND — Ty Gibbs and John Hunter Nemechek started the ToyotaCare 250 at the front of the pack Saturday at Richmond Raceway, with Gibbs at the pole position and Nemechek in the No. 2 spot. By the time the 250-lap duel between the two was over, they finished as they started. Despite being overtaken by Nemechek on lap 247, Gibbs cut underneath Nemechek between Turns 3 and 4, bumping him in the process, and claimed the checkered flag with inches separating the two Toyota drivers. The victory was the 19-yearold’s seventh in 25 Xfinity Series races, and his third win this year. He was somewhat contrite after the late contact with Nemechek, his teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing. “I probably deserve to get bumped back for a win,” Gibbs said. “But we’re racing hard. These wins are hard to come by. You’ve just got to take every advantage. I didn’t let him by and clean him out for the win. I doored him. I got in there hard. That was the point. I was tight, but there’s no excuse for me hitting him. I hit him and knocked him up the track — but, like I said, we’re fighting for wins.” Nemechek was less than thrilled with the contact. “He was able to get a run beating my back bumper off, got inside of me,” Nemechek said. “Thought we would be able to run side-by-side there, him running low and me running high in (Turns) 3 and 4. It didn’t play out that way. He just didn’t even try to make the corner. It is what it is.” The pair dominated the field. Nemechek led four times for a total of 135 laps. Gibbs led

four times for a total of 114 laps. Josh Berry was the only other race leader and his time in front of the pack was essentially a blink: one lap. Gibbs’ late lead looked insurmountable until lapped traffic got in his way, allowing Nemechek to catch up. “It affected, I feel like, me a lot. That’s just part of racing,” Gibbs said. “I didn’t get through there as good as John Hunter
did — that’s why he got back to me. I just lost a lot on turns being underneath these guys. It’s just hard with them being on the outside of you really closely up off the corner. Bonsignore wins Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 150 By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND — The start to the spring 2022 race weekend at Richmond Raceway started off with a bang, or at least a worst-to-first story, in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 150 Friday night. It was a good start for a race weekend hoping to return to something approaching normal since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Justin Bonsignore, a threetime and defending Whelen Modified Tour champion, began the 2022 tour disastrously when a mechanical failure knocked him out of the New Smyrna Visitors Bureau 200 in New Smyrna, Florida, back in February. He had weeks before the Virginia Is for Racing Lovers 150 — the second race of the Whelen Modified season — to stew over the result. Bonsignore began the race in the pole position, faded a bit in the middle of the race, then overtook and fought off Tommy Catalano in a late-lap duel to win. “It’s been a long seven weeks,” Bonsignore said. “Driving home from work every day, we’re dead last in points. It was a long time until we raced again. “Deep down, we knew that Smyrna was out of our control. You’re going to have parts failures in this series. It was just important to come back and try to have a good day.” Bonsignore said he had to be disciplined in how he ran

a restart after the final caution with 49 laps to go. Bonsignore worked back into second place, then chased down Catalano, who was looking for his first series win. He took advantage of lapped traffic and Catalano’s worn tires to move inside and pull even with Catalano on Lap 11, then took the lead on Lap 10 and held it the rest of the way. “The tires just wear so quick. You’re trying to go as hard as you can but you’re babying the car as much as you can as well,” Bonsignore said. “It’s a fine line of getting the right pace you need to run. … “Once you see his car to fault a little bit and start to get loose off of 2, and you can see him off of 4, too, which is worse because you’ve got so much wheel on the car it’s just killing the right rear tire even more — once I saw that, you kind of pull yourself back up in your seat, get out a little bit of the funk you’re in and you’re, like, ‘All right, I can go do this.’ ” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Installation of the signal poles will be first. This work might take until the end of May. Paving is expected to begin in late May and take about six days. County proposes to increase tax relief for elderly, disabled residents Contributed Report news@mechocal.com Among the items up for consideration by the board of supervisors on the public hearing on the County Administrator’s proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget on April 6 is a proposed increase in tax relief for eligible elderly and disabled residents. Hanover County has offered this program for many years and the estimated 1,200 taxpayers that currently qualify realize an estimated average tax relief of about $1,270, with many paying no county real estate tax at all. Given the severity and persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic, higher real property assessments and continuing high inflation, the commissioner of the revenue and the county administrator recommend that the board of supervisors further enhance the tax relief program that was originally presented on Feb. 16. These additional enhancements are believed to not only expand
the number of residents who may be eligible for the program but also to potentially increase the amount of relief for participants. The program enhancements and the amounts advertised for public hearing include: Increasing the net combined financial worth, excluding the value of the home that may be held by elderly or disabled residents from $200,000 to $300,000; increasing the maximum income levels within each program tier by $2,500; and increasing the percentage of relief by 5% in each program tier. The estimated amount of tax relief for eligible participants will continue to be based on a sliding scale but with an increase in the total income limits and an increase in the percentage of relief for each program tier. As proposed, qualified residents with income of less than $25,000 will pay no tax; those with an income of $25,001-$35,000 would receive 80% tax relief;
