enry Atkinson has been recognized as the Hanover High School (HHS) Class of 2022’s valedictorian with a GPA of 4.590. Logan Markley, with a GPA of 4.430, has been named the class’s salutatorian. Atkinson is the son of Stephen and Amy Atkinson. Atkinson has maintained a busy athletic schedule throughout his time at HHS, participating in volleyball, swimming and soccer during all four years of high school. Throughout his time on the school’s swim team, Atkinson has excelled as a four-year regional and state qualifier, served as team captain during his senior year and received the Hanover High School Boys Swimming

Hanover County School Board and Board of Supervisors members discussed a minimum wage increase to $15 an hour for Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) employees during a joint education committee meeting, which was originally scheduled for May 12 but rescheduled to June 3.

Find a side job without the scams While a side job can be a great opportunity to make extra money, be aware of fake opportunities that may be a trap. The scammers may look for an opportunity for identity theft, a fake check scam and more. Ways to avoid falling victim to job scams: Screen potential clients: Get to know a client before agreeing to do any work. Watch out for the “too good to be true” job postings: If it sounds out of this world, it’s often a scam. Research side jobs before applying: Go directly to the company’s website and verify the job posting. Be cautious of fake checks: The employer may offer a position and only say they will send a check for needed supplies before work begins. They may “overpay” and ask to have some of the

funds sent back in the form of gift cards, which can lead to the realization that the check deposited was fake. Never pay to work: A fee should never have to be paid to apply for a job or to get a position. A legitimate company won’t pay a new employee anything before they begin work. Get all the details in writing before starting a position: Know what one is signing up for before putting pen to paper. Guard personal information: Be sure it is a legitimate business before handing over personal or sensitive information. A serendipitous tale of the past rediscovered

ooking at the Historic Polegreen Church without knowing any of its history, questions are sure to pop up. Is this curious yet beautiful structure in the midst of construction? Is it intentionally unfinished and, if so, why? I was first introduced to the church’s story while writing of the impressive role that the Rev. Dr. Robert Bluford Jr. played in bringing the historic structure to life. The site’s story is a rich one – a story Historic Polegreen Church Foundation President Dave Fuller recently spent an afternoon guiding me through to unveil some of its intricacies. Standing on the grounds of the “ghost church,” the tranquility is surprising given its proximity to a fairly busy street. Yet the subtle sound of passing cars seemed to fade into the background. There, looking upon the stretch of seemingly untouched land and listening to the peaceful noise of birds chirping above, it truly felt like being transported to another world – or rather, another time. The preservations who worked on the site wanted to capture what life looked like in the colonial period for visitors, Fuller said. As he spoke, he painted images in the mind of streets bustling with horses and carriages under a blazing spring sun instead of cars and encampments of churchgoers scattered throughout a nearby open field. After all, a church service only a mile

away would take a three-hour journey on horseback without the convenience of a quick car trip, so visitors might spend days camping along the property as they patiently waited for a preacher to arrive. The site has a fascinating history, with various puzzle pieces falling into place over time that led to the revival of the church, which tragically burned down in the summer of 1864. While it was never truly forgotten and a memorial rock was placed on the property, Bluford wandered around the field and stumbled upon the church’s foundation brick by brick. It’s pretty remarkable to think of how such remnants were mostly forgotten yet still preserved for over 100 years, and it took a curious historic preservationist to uncover the hidden treasures. Interestingly enough, his vision sparked yet another discovery that led to the formation of the church that stands today. Hearing of the name “Polegreen,” a local resident was reminded of the surviving sketches of an ancestor that were tucked away in a relative’s attic. The resident contacted the relatives, who soon dug up the sketches in their Pennsylvania home and uncovered a crucial piece of the puzzle. These sketches were born from the hand of Lt. Thomas Ferrell, a Civil War soldier who drew hundreds of sketches of anything that caught his eye during the war. He visited the church in 1862 and decided to illustrate its interior and exterior in impressive detail. With these sketches, the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation was

able to determine the height of the building, what it looked like and other questions that remained from the discovered foundation. From there, the beautiful ghost church was envisioned and constructed. Walking the grounds with Fuller, I wondered aloud what the artist and soldier would think today if he knew that his sketches, which perhaps he thought to never be seen outside of his family, would help revive the same church that caught his eye more than 120 years into the future and remain an inspiration today, 160 years later. What drove the soldier to capture the church before him? Was it the peaceful scenery or the beauty of the architecture that sparked his creativity, or was it simply a way to pass his time that day? Whatever the reason, their existence and discovery is just as remarkable. “The part that I find really serendipitous is how things fall into place,” said Fuller, which seemed to perfectly capture the fascinating nature of the tale. Despite the church falling to fire long ago, its stories were waiting to be discovered within its buried bricks and the drawings from a former visitor who captured its memory. Those circumstances – or happenstances – evoke a sense of curiosity and admiration when a visitor of today stands within the “unfinished” structure and learns this part of its history. Much like the image of the structure on the site today, what is known of its history paints a fascinating picture of the past while the unknown leaves an array of questions to invite lasting intrigue.

Peterson discusses Redd appointment Dear Editor, What is this world we now live in? Good is evil. Total tolerance is good. George Orwell, you were right on target, just a little premature. I am the Mechanicsville representative on the Board of Supervisors and it was my responsibility to recommend one of eight candidates to be appointed to our School Board. Our meeting started as normal, with an invocation and the pledge to our national flag. We recognized one of our young citizens for achieving the special honor of becoming an Eagle Scout, which is always a special event. Then came citizen’s time – a time when we allow all citizens to come forward and express and share their concerns and thoughts about all things relevant to the county. Six of our residents chose to heatedly speak in opposition to the Hanover citizen who was later appointed to our School Board. One even went so far as to say “even his name is a dog whistle for neo-confederates.” Two days earlier, Monday evening, I informed each of the candidates of my decision to recommend John R. Redd for the position. After informing the candidates, I informed each of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors. No one else was informed before our meeting. I can’t say I was shocked because our Hanover grapevine obviously works well. People already knew of my intentions. What bothered me was that these people knew nothing about Mr. Redd other than what they read in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, who graciously had given each candidate an opportunity to share their thoughts on two basic questions about their thoughts regarding Hanover schools. Mr. Redd stated in his response that he was a Christian and a member of Fairmount Christian Church and that he see LETTERS, pg. 12

Phipps was remembered with Lyndell N. Woods of the Fort Lewis Volunteer Fire Department, Todd A. Landreth of the Norfolk Airport Fire Department and Sean H. Land of the Virginia Beach Fire Department. Each fallen hero served in their departments for over 20 years. Hanover Fire-EMS Assistant Chief Chris Anderson accompanied the two sons of Phipps, Jackson and Jeffrey, in offering Phipps’ eulogy. Jeffrey, who now serves as a firefighter with Hanover Fire-EMS, shared his father’s lasting legacy and influence on friends, family, colleagues and the community he dedicated his life to protecting. Following in the footsteps of his own

father who served as Henrico County firefighter, Phipps first joined Hanover’s department as a volunteer firefighter in 1985 at the age of 14. He served as an emergency communications dispatcher before becoming a firefighter with the Richmond International Airport. Returning to Hanover Fire-EMS several years after, he served as an assistant fire marshal and was eventually promoted to battalion chief in October 2007, holding several roles such as battalion chief of training and eventually the senior battalion chief in operations. “He was known for his strong command presence and understanding of firefighting tactics,” said Jeffrey. “No matter what incident came his way, he would always handle it in a calm and professional manner.” Just a few days after his 50th birthday, Phipps was diagnosed with cancer when he went for a colonoscopy in February 2021. “After his diagnosis, he showed tremendous strength and had a strong fighting

spirit,” Jeff said. “Even while suffering tremendously and fighting cancer, his focus never shifted on how he can help others.” He became an advocate for cancer prevention and testing among firefighters, and his actions caused other department members to detect issues early enough before becoming serious. He became involved with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, where his wife, Carolyn, continues to volunteer today. Phipps tragically lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Jeffrey said his father was well-known for his sense of humor and love for uplifting others with laughter. Before his passing, he requested that an ice cream truck be present at his service so that everyone could leave the funeral with “ice cream and a smile.” “We are striving to ensure our dad’s legacy lives on today and that we continue to educate and protect our firefighter family,” said Jeff. ARTHUR, Patsy Marie Kirby, 76, of Fork Union, formerly of Mechanicsville, received her heavenly wings on Sunday May 8, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Malcus and Maude Southard Kirby of Studley; a son in-law, Allen Perkins Jr; and a grandson, Michael Perkins. Patsy is survived by her husband of 58 years, James; daughter, Monica Perkins; sisters, Barbara Hansen and Diana Edmunds; brother, Donald Kirby; three grandchil-

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 44 years, Diane Burton; seven children, Brenda Lee (Earl), Tabatha Mihalcoe (John), Rickey Burton Jr. (Tina), Felicia Nelson (Michael), Kenny Burton (Victoria), Cassandra Schneider (John) and Kim Dunlap; 12 grandchildren, Jenna, Ricky III, Katelyn, Savannah, John V, Alyssa, Madelyn, Kennadi, Catherine, Peytonn, David and Eli; two nieces, Rose and Christy; three nephews, Jason, Will and Brad; and his loving dog, Romeo. Rickey was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. In his younger years, he was employed by Phillip Morris and successfully operated his own business, Burton’s Tile, for many years until retirement. He was a master of his craft with a keen eye for detail. Over the years, he served as a teacher and mentor to many young people, teaching them his trade and to appreciate life. Rickey was always optimistic, honorable, strong, courageous, gentle, kind and loving and a pillar of strength to his family and all those he met. He enjoyed fishing and having a good time, but his greatest love was his time spent with his family. He engrained in his children the importance of family, Sunday dinners together and the strength they have when they are united as one. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, second only to his beautiful wife, whom he cherished. The fam-

She, alongside her husband, was a founding member of Mechanicsville Christian Center and later Central Virginia Assembly of God. Serving her family, church and community were her greatest joys. She loved sewing, cooking, flowers, birds and butterflies. Her final years were spent at The Hermitage, where she enjoyed coloring, bingo and a good laugh. There, she met, and later married, her husband and served for many years as a Sunday School teacher, deaconess and Vacation Bible School worker. After graduating from John Marshall High School, she worked for Southern States before leaving to raise her three children. She later joined the School Food Services Division of Henrico County, where she retired after 23 years. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janice Snead; daughter, Tammy Snead; three sons; two grandsons, Chris and DC Shears; four stepchildren, Wendy Sawyer (Bill), Cindy Wright (Robert), Charles Atkins and Jesse Atkins (Lee); 11 stepgrandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Edith Francis, Shirley Snead, Nancy Lowery; two brothers, Robert Snead, Roger Snead (Diane); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Richard Snead; five siblings, Richard Jr., James, Lonnie, Johnny and Edna. Cecil drove for Greyhound for 26 years before retiring. In his retirement, Cecil enjoyed spending time with his two dogs, Buttons and Princess, who preceded him in death. In his younger days, Cecil could be found taking Janice to country music dances and playing guitar. His favorite accessory was a cowboy hat and he could often be found out in the yard. Cecil bravely battled Alzheimer's disease for 10 years. His family is eternally grateful for Cha Cha's Home Care in Mechanicsville, Va., especially John and Theresa, and hospice workers, Nicole and Mary and the hospice Chaplain. Rest in peace my Darling. I love you always until we meet again. If that wasn’t enough, I opened the Sunday May 29 edition of the Richmond TimesDispatch only to find that Michael Paul Williams has jumped right in the pool with them. It was a bit disappointing

to find that a rewarded opinion writer would choose to make similar judgements without ever checking his facts. Journalists strive to share all the facts with their readers. Apparently, opinion writers are not held to that same standard. People, give the man a chance. Don’t make pre-mature judgements based only on actions you think might happen. You are not mind readers. Community Mechanicsville Ruritan Club announces scholarship winners Contributed Report news@mechocal.com The Mechanicsville Ruritan Club announced this year’s high school student scholarship recipients at the club’s monthly breakfast meeting last week. In selecting the recipient of a Mechanicsville Ruritan Club Scholarship, no single factor is determinative. While an applicant’s scholastic achievements are considered, a strong emphasis is also given to an applicant’s participation in school and outside organizations and activities. The Mechanicsville High School (MHS) student recipients are Claire Hayden and Kaitlyn Dow. Hayden is the recipient of the Al Randall Mechanicsville Ruritan Club Scholarship. She will be attending Christopher Newport University where she plans on majoring in business administration with a minor in leadership. She has been a member of several club organizations, two of which she served as the organizations’ president and member of the school’s lacrosse team for her four years at MHS. Dow is the recipient of the Otis Hall Mechanicsville Ruritan Club Scholarship. She will be attending J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College with a goal of attending St. Mary’s School of Imaging to obtain her certification in radiology in nuclear medicine and related fields. Among her various community and school activities, she has been a member of the MHS cross country and track teams for all four years of high school, serving as team captain for her junior and senior years. The Hanover High School student recipient is Alexandra Droujinsky. Droujinsky is the recipient of the Charles Longest Mechanicsville Ruritan Club Scholarship. She will be attending Liberty University where she plans on majoring in family and consumer services with a minor in photography and is looking to create her own business one day. Berta, who has served as the HCPS assistant superintendent since June 2021, was recently recognized as the 2022 VASBO Cardinal Award Winner, the organization’s premier honor given to one of its members each year for exemplifying professionalism, leadership and innovation in the field of school business management. Berta is the first recipient of the prestigious award to represent a Central Virginia school division since the award’s inception in 2009. “It is an honor to receive this recognition, especially considering the phenomenal colleagues who have received the award previously,” Berta said of receiving the award, candidates for which are nominated by their peers from across the state. “I am truly humbled to have been nominated and ultimately selected as the recipient of this recognition.” “Throughout my career, I have prided my work on providing leadership and support to the teams I work with and to remain focused on student-centered decision making,” she added. “At the forefront of my work are the students we serve, and I believe in making decisions

The Hanover Concert Band is recruiting interested musicians Contributed Report news@mechocal.com The Hanover Concert Band (HCB) is scheduled for a variety of summer and fall performances and is currently seeking new members. HCB is a community band that performs throughout Hanover County and Richmond as the “Musical Ambassadors of Hanover County.” Founded in 1989, the band is celebrating its 33rd anniversary this year. HCB is currently under the direction of Karla Bloom of Montpelier. Venues of past performances have included the Hanover Tomato Festival, Wayside Veterans Memorial Park, Hanover Arts and Activities Center and Town of Ashland celebrations such as The Strawberry Faire, Fourth of July Family Event, Train Day and more. The band received the Hanover County Commitment to Community Award in 1999 and 2007. In 2014, the band was honored by the county for 25 years of volunteer service to the community.

HCB is a group of dedicated amateur musicians that range in age from high schoolers to seniors in their 80s. They welcome newcomers who play or have previously played a band instrument to join and provide the gift of live musical entertainment to the community. Rehearsals are held most Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, located at 500 South Center Street in Ashland. The band performs around 12 to 15 concerts throughout the year. Auditions are not required, but musicians must be able to read music at minimum difficulty level of grade 3 or better. HCB’s schedule for the remainder of this year includes concerts at The Strawberry Faire on June 11, the Hanover Arts and Activities Center on July 4 and Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown on Oct. 1. Annual Halloween, Christmas concerts and more are yet to be scheduled. Sassy is very friendly around people. She loves to run and play with other dogs. Sassy does really well on a leash as well. Long walks are to her liking. Sassy will be a perfect match for an owner who can keep her active. Buddy 582484, is a 2-year-old Canine/ Labrador Retriever Mix. Buddy is a special guy. He has come a long way in our care. Patriot boys finish third in Class 4 track Raider girls finish fifth; Two titles for Foreman By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor LYNCHBURG — Patrick Henry’s distance runners led the way as the Patriot boys finished third in the Virginia High School League Class 4 outdoor track and field championships at Liberty University Friday and Saturday. The Patriots, with 52 points, finished behind Pulaski County (63 points) and Deep Creek (60 points) in the team standings. Hanover, with 32 points, finished sixth and Atlee (26 points) ninth. Mechanicsville finished near the middle of the pack in a four-way tie for 20th place. In the girls championship race, Atlee led county teams with a fifth-place finish behind Heritage-Newport News, Jefferson Forest, Deep Creek and Western Albemarle. Hanover was 10th and Patrick Henry 21st. Trevor Mason led the Patriot boys with wins in the 3,200meter run and as anchor of the 4x800 relay team (with Alex Davis, Luke Taylor and Andrew Senfield). But the sprint contingent did its part, with Shamar Williams taking thirds in both

the 100 and 200 dashes. “We were hoping for a little bit more,” said Patrick Henry head track and field coach Scott Brown. “But I can’t complain about third.” The 4x800 relay team got the Patriots off to a good start Friday, edging runner up Loudoun Valley by little more than a second, 7:52.64 to

7:53.98. “We had a lot of surprises,” Brown said. “The distance guys got us started by winning the 4x8. They really wanted that. Trevor kind of celebrated at the end. I’d seen that and was thinking, ‘Please don’t get us DQ’d for celebrating!’ It’s one of those things. We’ve kind of had a little rivalry with Loudoun Valley for

awhile and wanted to beat those guys.” Manny Jackson finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 300 and 110 hurdles. Taylor finished fifth in the 3,200 run and Davis finished fifth in the 800. Mason took a seventh in the 1,600. In what was probably the biggest surprise for the Patriots,

their 4x100 team of Edwin Henderson, Jordan Allen, Montrell James and Williams recorded a season-best time of 43.01 for an All-State worthy eighth place finish. On the girls side, Logan Nuckols turned in three AllState performances finishing seventh in the 3,200 run, and eighth in the 1,600 as well as the

4x800 relay (with Jenna Dyke, Olivia Joyce and Autumn Just). Wren McLaughlin had the best finish for the Patriot girls with a fifth in the high jump. Jada Foreman added two more state titles to her storied career at Atlee. In her last meet as a Raider, she won both the long jump and triple jump. But she also had All-State efforts with seconds in the high jump and 100 hurdles. Josie Rempe finished fifth in the 200 dash and sixth in the 100. The Raider boys were led by their distance contingent, especially Travis Albon who finished fourth in the 3,200 and as part of the Atlee 4x800 relay

Hanover teams chase state championships By Rob Witham for the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE — In 22 games, the pitching staff of Hanover baseball has given up five runs or more just four times. On Wednesday night in the Region 4B Championship against surprise finalist Monacan, the “army” led the way once again. Cannon Peebles got the start, striking out six of the first seven batters he faced, combining with Marcus Van Alstine and Seth Keller on a two-hit shutout as the Hawks repeated as region champions with a 4-0 victory. In three tournament games, Hanover did not allow a run. At the plate, the deep senior class, with standouts going everywhere from Boston College and North Carolina State to Old Dominion and VMI, led the way. Brett Alvis, a Mount St. Mary’s recruit, had two hits and two RBIs, one coming on a double that trickled down the right field line during a three-run fourth inning. “I kind of missed it a little bit, but got a good enough swing on it to get it down the line,” Alvis said. “I’m not a fast guy, so I honestly wasn’t running until I saw my coach running out saying ‘get on two!,’ so I thought, ‘All right.’ ” The inning began with a Wade Shepherd bunt single, followed by two stolen bases. One out later, Shepherd scored when Keller’s sharp grounder was bobbled by Monacan. Keller reached second on a fielder’s choice, then plated on the Alvis double. Alvis took third base on a passed ball, then scored when Cole Elrod singled deep in the hole at shortstop to make it 4-0.

Monacan (12-12), which came into the tournament as the No. 10 seed, having to win games at Varina, at King George and the night before at Mechanicsville to make the final, allowed just seven Hanover hits behind senior Ashton Lasky, who threw 51 strikes in 79 pitches. But the Chiefs offense struggled, managing just a single in both the fifth and sixth innings, never getting a runner past second base. Monacan head coach Bryan Miltenberger knew the assignment on this night was tough but was thrilled with the attitude and effort of his squad. “We tell them, the postseason is the best time to play,” Miltenberger said. “The sign of a good team, a successful team, is practicing or playing on Memorial Day. The resiliency of the kids has been awesome.” The Chiefs proved they can play with the best teams in their region, and their Cinderella story is not over. Monacan traveled to Region 4A champion Grafton (11-11-1) for a state quarterfinal on Tuesday (after this edition went to press). Meanwhile, Hanover (20-2) returned to the familiar posi-

Atlee girls win title, Mustangs make history By Joe Dodson Richmond Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE — Atlee’s forwards proved to be too much for Mechanicsville to handle as the Raiders won the Region 4B championship in girls soccer 2-0 on Thursday night. A stormy evening with lightning in Mechanicsville pushed the original 6:30 p.m. kickoff to 8:10. Ultimately the bad weather returned, forcing the officials to call the game in the 71st minute. The win marked Atlee’s third of the season over its Capital District foe. Atlee took down Chancellor and Eastern View on its way to the championship, while the Mustangs cruised by Monacan and Hanover. Raiders coach Bruce Lovelace said it was important for his team to experience an environment like that of Thursday night’s raucous affair. “We had never been in an environment quite like that,” Lovelace said. “The crowd, the noises, the conditions where we had to wait for things — it’s the experience itself that is important.” Freshman midfielder Olivia Sikes sent in a free kick from the half-field line to the feet of sophomore forward Brooke Matthews, who calmly finished a volley to the upper-right netting in the seventh minute. The Mustangs pressed heavy in response to the early goal, with five players pressing the Raiders back line through most of the match. Atlee, unable to maintain much possession in the midfield due to the press, sent through ball after through ball for the Raiders’ attackers to chase. for the Raiders in the 20th minute, controlling the ball just outside of the goal box before ripping a shot that required Ashley Owens to use her hops to get her gloves on the ball. The Raiders were the more aggressive side in the first half, putting a handful of shots on frame, while the Mustangs seemed more content picking their spots and looking for an extra pass in the final third. After breaking down a defender and dribbling deep into the right side of the goal box, Mechanicsville forward Mackenzie Joly shot a laser in the 27th minute that bounced off the top post to keep the

score 1-0. Mechanicsville fans thought their team had leveled it in the 55th minute when a direct kick fired from Maddie Stubblefield soared over the goal and hit the netting behind, giving the illusion of a goal that even confused the PA announcer before realizing it was a goal kick. The Raiders had a chance to make it two in the 60th minute when sophomore forward Georgia Skelton intercepted a ball in the midfield, dribbled to the right side and crossed it in for her open forwards in front of the goal, but they were unable to finish the play. Davidson found the back of

the net in the 66th minute after chasing down a through ball and using a picture-perfect first touch to fly by the Mustangs defense, putting her one-onone with Owens, where she finished in the bottom left corner of the goal. “The second goal came from a counter because we were up taking a corner kick. And they put everybody in to defend it and the ball got cleared out into a big open space in front of our defenders,” said Mechanicsville head girls soccer coach Paul Doss. “Two of their players that are super-fast were able to get to the ball and just put it by our defenders and outrun them to

And then it was one-on-one with the keeper.” Moments later in the 68th minute, Davidson chased down another long ball sent by the Raiders defense and again used her speed to fly by the Mustangs defense, but her shot flew over the post. Skelton was nearly unstoppable for the Raiders in the second half, putting up chance after chance on goal and intercepting any loose balls in the center of the field. The game was called in the 71st minute as lightning approached the field. After initially considering waiting the required 30 minutes after the last sign of lightning, the offi-

cials called it a night. Even though the Mustangs lost the region championship game, they clinched a berth in the Class 4 state championship tournament with a 2-1 victory over cross-county rival Hanover in a Region 4B semifinal on May 31. Mechanicsville led 1-0 at halftime, but the Hawks tied the game and seemed to have the Mustangs on their back foot for much of the second half. But, in injury time, Bailey Altizer found a seam through the Hanover defense and kicked a long ball through the gap into the Hawk net for a historic Mechanicsville win. “I just needed to put myself in the right mindset to know that I wanted this. I wanted to go to states and I wanted my team to go to states,” Altizer said. “Maddie Stubblefield, she threw [the ball] in to me. I took a touch, dribbled a little bit, cut and then shot it.” Altizer said the Mustangs had to adjust mentally to the Hanover challenge in the second half. “I knew we came off a little sluggish,” she said. “We weren’t all feeling it. But, as soon as they got that goal, we knew that we needed to get into this. If we wanted this, we needed to get our heads in the game. It wasn’t going to come right to us. We needed to work for it.” The Raiders hosted Region 4A runner-up Jamestown (134-1) while Mechanicsville traveled to Region 4A champion Smithfield Tuesday night. Both games were played after this edition went to press. Patrick Henry was ousted from the Region 4B boys soccer tournament with a 3-0 loss to Powhatan on May 31. Firth felt it prudent to scratch her for the 1,600 and 3,200, both events for which she qualified. “If we would have had a healthy Alli Crytser, we would have really jumped up a lot in the score,” Firth said. ing recruitment and retention challenges, including a merit increase of 5% and market-based salary adjustments. In addition, the budget includes a minimum wage increase to $15 an hour for county employees, but supervisors called for the same increase in the school division during the April hearing. At the start of last week’s meeting, County Administrator John Budesky noted how the county is uniquely collaborative in its budget process, as county and school officials meet regularly throughout the year. “I am happy to say that our bud-

get process is more highly successful than a number of counterparts because we can meet together and walk through issues,” Budesky said. He said while they aim to treat both county and school employees as consistently as they can throughout the process, the “changing market has taken some of that consistency … out of [their] hands.” There is currently no federal requirement for a $15 minimum wage, but the market is rapidly changing and competitors have offered even greater wages since the budget’s adoption, he said. “Quite honestly, a $15 minimum wage is starting to look small compared to some other numbers that

we’re seeing in the market,” he said. He explained that on the county side, they identified only a small group of individuals that did not meet the $15 minimum wage threshold and required around $67,000 in adjustments, so it did not make sense to phase the adjustment over multiple years. In addition, he and Gill noted how county and school employee classifications have crucial differences and that the school division has a larger number of contracted positions and overall staff to account for. Gill said moving their lowest wage employees has been a priority for several years, but it will take more than two budget cycles to reach a $15

minimum wage. “We’re all about solutions,” he said. “And so we do want to look at what it will take to get there, understanding that this probably is not going to be a one-year approach, just like it wasn’t a couple of budget cycles ago.” Amanda Six, HCPS Director of Finance, presented an overview of what their current pay philosophy is, which is comprised of a uniform pay scale and a teacher salary scale. The uniform pay scale has a minimum and maximum pay range and grade levels, with each job placed in a grade based on level of responsibility. When a job offer is given, each individual’s work history, education

and experience is considered, which determines their position on the scale. At the time the presentation was made, around 1,015 individuals were on the uniform pay plan. The teacher salary scale is comprised of steps ranging from zero to 42 that correlate with individual experience and offers additional compensation based on level of education. At the time staff developed the presentation, there were around 1,143 employees on the pay plan. She highlighted the progress they have made in recent years in addressing compression and targeting job families for adjustments, including increasing the average custodian salsee WAGE pg. 27

He thanked the families for offering support, patience and comfort to their hero throughout their difficult career and allowing them to serve and “make a difference in this world.” “They were fathers, sons, brothers, uncles. They were friends and neighbors,” Prillaman said. “They were someone’s sweetheart or soul mate, and they were heroes to little kids and adults alike who looked up to them as they went about their business.” He said everyone can truly honor their lives with the same integrity, courage, selflessness, love, compassion and commitment to excellence and doing everything possible to protect all firefighters.

South Anna Supervisor Susan Dibble and Ashland Supervisor Faye Prichard called for the prioritization of scenarios one and two in order to aid the employees most in need. “It’s the bottom of our pay scale that are struggling,” Dibble said. “And these people are struggling and making decisions on whether or not to buy food or new shoes for their kids.” “I would implore you to embrace scenario one, work toward scenario two and do as much as you can,” Dibble said. Steven Ikenberry, school board representative for the Cold Harbor District, expressed worries over “what signal” the minimum wage increase would send to teachers who struggle financially themselves. He said from meeting with five schools in his district, he found that anywhere from 10% to 20% of teachers work second jobs.

Prichard said she believes scenario one and two are a good starting point and that teachers would understand. Committee members agreed to work toward finding a balance between the two populations in upcoming discussions. “At the end of the day… there’s never enough money for everything we want to take care of,” Budesky said. “There’s the amount that we have, and we need to prioritize that the best we can.” He said they need to improve on setting budget priorities in advance to minimize any lack of clarity between school and county officials by the budget’s adoption. “We appreciate the candor in this discussion, and in the months to come we will work toward interim solutions for longer-term problems,” he said.

BARKing Lot The BARKing Lot returns with adoptable pets from various animal groups. Many people have found their “furever” friend at the Ashland Strawberry Faire. The BARKing Lot is located in the Kid Zone by the library and is sponsored by Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland. There will be water and pools available at the BARKing Lot for our furry friends. The Kissing Booth will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Kiss an adorable dog for $1/kiss. Proceeds go to the dog adoptions groups attending the Faire.

A

s title sponsor of the 2022 Ashland Strawberry Faire, Village Bank invites everyone attending the Faire to enjoy the true spirit of community pride that this event celebrates. In 1982 the Ashland Strawberry Faire was born from the inspiration of a local producer who, along with local community advocates, literally handpicked the namesake strawberries that were celebrated in the inaugural event. Today, 40 years later, the event has grown in scope and popularity but still holds true to its commitment to its community to fund local scholarships and nonprofits. Berry-filled dessert great for patio parties

Entertaining comes easy when the weather is pleasant. Many people welcome the chance to host in warm weather, and with hosting comes the need to provide tasty foods and refreshing beverages. While grilling is often the method of choice when hosting warm weather gatherings, following up tasty grilled fare with an equally pleasing homemade dessert can set any soiree apart. ‘Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp’ from ‘CrockPot: 365 Year-Round Recipes’ (Publications International, Ltd.) from Crock-Pot test kitchens creates a cobbler-esque dessert chock-full of comforting flavors. It can be enjoyed on its own, or topped with a dollop of cream or ice cream.

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp Makes 8 servings 4 cups sliced hulled strawberries 4 cups diced rhubarb (about 5 stalks), cut into 1/2-inch dice 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar

2 tablespoons lemon juice 1-1/2 tablespoons cornstarch, plus water (optional) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup old-fashioned oats 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted Coat a Crock-Pot¨ slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place strawberries, rhubarb, 11/2 cups granulated sugar and lemon juice in the crock and mix well. Cook on high 1-1/2 hours, or until fruit is tender. If fruit is dry after cooking, add a little water. If fruit has too much liquid, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and stir into liquid. Cook on high an additional 15 minutes, or until cooking liquid is thickened. Preheat the oven to 375 F. For the topping,

combine flour, oats, sugars, ginger, and nutmeg in medium bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in almonds. Remove the lid from the Crock-Pot slow cooker and gently sprinkle topping onto fruit. Transfer the stoneware to the oven. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until tipping begins to brown. -Metro Creative

Pancake puffs make a sweet treat at any time of the day Pancakes are a beloved breakfast food. Fluffy and filling, pancakes can be soaked in syrup and/or topped with any number of fruits or nuts. Pancakes also can be turned into delicious desserts when paired with ice cream and other treats. The Danish have a unique spin on traditional pancakes. Known as ‘aebleskivers,’ these balls made from a pancake-type batter puff up in a special pan and end up resembling doughnut holes. They can be served for breakfast, snacks or desserts, making them as versatile as pancakes. Try aebleskivers for yourself with this recipe for ‘Aebleskivers’ from ‘Small Sweet Treats’ (Gibbs Smith) by Marguerite Marceau Henderson.

Aebleskiver pan cups all-purpose flour teaspoon baking powder teaspoon baking soda

teaspoon ground cardamom teaspoon kosher salt cup sugar large egg yolks teaspoon vanilla extract cups buttermilk large egg whites tablespoon unsalted butter Fresh strawberries or preserves Powdered sugar

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks, vanilla and buttermilk with a whisk or handheld mixer until frothy. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just to combine. In another bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy and stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter. Rub a little of the unsalted butter into each indentation of a well-heated aebleskivers pan. With a paper towel, remove excess butter.

Place about 1 tablespoon batter in each indentation, top with about 1/2 teaspoon of preserves of choice, and add another tablespoon of batter on top. Cook until the sides are set and bottom is golden brown, about 2 minutes.

Using two wooden skewers, carefully turn the aebleskivers over to cook the other side. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes more. Transfer to a platter, dust with powdered sugar, and serve hot. Repeat with remaining batter. -Metro Creative
