And when I think about the process of beauty, I’m forced to acknowledge its creation. Whether we’re moms who create a nest for our family, or coffee shop baristas who create hearts in cappuccinos, I see that – in essence – everyone is a creator. So this year’s issue naturally evolved to focus on creating.
Special Marketing Section
With the process of creating in mind, this year we asked local artists to share why they make art on pages 10-11. Assistant Editor Keisha Hatchett has produced a calendar of arts-related events to provide a summer’s worth of interaction with art.
“When I say artist I mean the one who is building things … some with a brush – some with a shovel – some choose a pen,” Jackson Pollock
Wednesday, July 16, 2014 Sun Sentinel
“Something that is created with imagination … that is beautiful or that expresses ideas or feelings,” is Merriam-Webster’s definition of art. So when I stepped back to think about art on more of a micro level, I recognize that beautiful creations can be found in many facets of life including, but not bound to, institutions.
Through our photographers’ lenses we’ve documented several communityminded examples of creating right here in South Florida. For example, Studio 18’s “The Sincerity Project” exhibit, which focused on the theme of home portrayed by local artists and special-needs groups; the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s “Research and Development” series, which has provided studio space where artists can apply their creative processes to social issues like homelessness; and the Broward County Main Library’s “Impressions of Humanity” exhibit of Marcos Antonio’s goal to create the world’s largest painting on canvas.

hen thinking about art at a macro level, there is a tendency to visualize masterpieces housed in a gallery or exhibit. But I find that when planning a special edition of Society Scene, it helps me to break down the topic – in this case, art – and view it as a series of topics versus one broad subject as a whole.
And because art doesn’t have to be complex, pages 26-27 feature several simple arts projects to ignite creativity in your own home – try them with friends, your children or alone and let yourself get lost in the process – remember, perfection is not the goal. If you’re inclined to explore creativity further, there’s also a list of locations in this feature where you can tap into your inner artist by taking a class. We’ve created this year’s Arts Issue to provide you the tools and inspiration for you to pick up a paintbrush – or a shovel – and create an art-filled life.

“My works express different aspects and values of life, with an underlying spiritual message all inspired expressed in abstract or figurative sculpture, most of which is prompted by inspirations from my surroundings, people and their environment, founded elements of nature, and even cast shadows in a dimly lit room. I want my viewers to feel or experience in part what I do, ‘a moment in time’, without ever having been there.”
“Always using a single image of a flower for my inspiration, whether representational or an abstracted ‘fractal’ of the original form, my focus is on the content: the organization of the space, the fluidity and energy of my brushwork, and the contrast and play of light to immediately captivate the viewer and lure them in the myriad of complexities; with my ultimate goal to create work that contains the power to remain interesting and engaging for many years to come.”

Deck the halls... “The Sincerity Project” makes a case for the comfort of home in Studio 18’s foyer
The centerpiece of exhibit “The Sincerity Project: Home” was a 20-foot-long wooden house at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines. The house was constructed from 18 wooden panels painted by Miami’s David “Lebo” Le Batard, Weston’s Ruben Ubiera, Fort Lauderdale’s Henning Haupt and other professional artists. Gallery walls included artistic interpretations of the same works by members of the special-needs community. Sales from the exhibit benefited the Children’s Harbor. This Friday, the studio will open its new exhibit “Heightened Senses,” where seven artists will explore individual themes such as reflections, juxtaposition, perspective and more. The July 18 opening will include multiple sensory audience participation. For more information, visit www.ppines.com.

Why should I see a Prosthodontist if nothing hurts? Many problems may not hurt until it is too late. Correcting problems before it becomes an emergency is usually an easier and simpler procedure for the patient and is also typically much less expensive.

If you’re feeling blocked, try one (or all) of these suggestions and let the inspiration come to you: MUNDANE: cook/bake; do laundry; re-pot plants; check out a book, from your local library. Sometimes the brightest ides come to us during mundane daily activities – like showering. GO FOR A WALK: sans your phone – maybe bring a camera. CINEMATIC: go see a movie – by yourself. GET LOST: in a dollar store, at the beach, on a bike ride. Doesn’t matter where. Allow yourself to get lost in a moment and then find yourself. PLAY: with a child, a dog or blow bubbles – chase the bubbles and see where they lead you. MUSIC: listen to music – live music, new music, create music; maybe even dance a little. Pretend no one’s watching. MAKE A MESS: try one of these arts projects. EDUCATE: take a class.
