P
urchase your tickets, pick out your outfits and pack your bags… The philanthropic event season is here. And what you’re holding is the most essential item on your packing list: Society Scene’s Season Preview. Inspired by one of our favorite activities – travel – this year’s edition will unfold like a scrapbook from a memorable trip. Scene & Be Seen features a compilation of photos from some of the upcoming events. Beginning on page 19 is your map to the season: 10 pages of event listings, designed as a pullout to be kept for reference. Profiling five feature events, Art Director Geri Irwin Clem created collages that capture memories of what’s to come. Photographer Kara Staryzk rallied Broward’s philanthropists for photo shoots aboard several modes of travel – yachts, trains and planes – to document the season’s adventures. Completing our packed itinerary, cover photographer Jayne Zar captured Michelle DiMarco in a timeless vintage outfit for her jet set through season. We’re ready for the voyage and excited to join you on the journey.

The Fire & Ice Tiara Ball November 17, 2012
Glittering tiaras and elegant evening gowns set the tone for the Royal Dames annual Tiara Ball, which is unquestionably one of the most festive fetes of the social season. This year is no exception as Ball Chair Manya Lowry, Vice Chair Carol Harrison, President Joey Stotsky and the ball committee prepare for the 43rd Anniversary Tiara Ball. “We chose to theme our event as The Fire & Ice Tiara Ball,” Joey said. “The theme will be evident from the invitations to the outstanding décor by Joel Patrick Studios, as well as special items on the menu and signature cocktails.” The Ball takes place at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six Crystal Ballroom on Saturday, November 17th. The evening begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. featuring Christofle of Bal Harbour, Marky’s caviar and champagne from Roederer Estate. Dinner and dancing will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Heat Wave performing. Underwriters for the Tiara Ball include: Platinum Sponsors Carol Harrison, Lorraine Thomas and Nova Southeastern University, along with Gold Sponsors Sharon Gustafson and Barry Florescue of The Florescue Foundation, and Mary Short of the Mary Jane Harlow Charitable Trust.
Tiara Ball Executive Committee: President Joey Stotsky, Décor Chair Carole Asser, Vice Chair Carol Harrison, Journal Chair Merri Grace McLeroy, Chair Manya Lowry, Underwriting Chair Rhonda Ritchie Aslaksen and VP of Ways & Means Mary Kazares
The Royal Dames have raised millions of dollars to encourage, aid, enrich and support educational programs and cancer research at the Rumbaugh–Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research at Nova Southeastern University. Tickets are $275.00 per person. For information visit www.royaldames.org

Jeannie Smith, Daughter of Holocaust Hero, to Discuss Mother’s Courage at Jewish Federation of Broward County Lion of Judah Luncheon Nov. 7, 2012
SOCIETY BROWARD • BR
ADVERTORIAL
Her mother was a righteous Gentile who saved European Jews during the Holocaust. She’s a proud daughter of a woman who left her mark on history. Jeannie Smith today is part of Second Generation, a group of speakers who share life stories of their parents’ first-hand experiences. Smith will tell the tale of her mother, Irene Gut Opdyke, at the Jewish Federation of Broward County Lion of Judah Luncheon on Wed., Nov. 7, 2012. Smith will have much to share. Ms. Gut Opdyke was a Polish worker for a high-ranking German official. In her position, she was able to save dozens of European Jews from death.
Even with the efforts of Smith, Ms. Gut Opdyke’s story has not gone untold. Her tale was the basis for “Irene’s Vow,” the acclaimed Broadway play. She has been named among the Righteous among the Nations, a designation bestowed by the Israeli Holocaust Commission upon those who risked their own lives to aid and save Jews.

Jeannie Smith, this year’s featured speaker
“We are excited to have Jeannie Smith as our speaker since she has an incredible story to share,” said event co-chair Ellen Sredni. “This luncheon brings together the Lions who are a very dedicated group of women. Chairing an event is a way for me to give back to the community and I look forward to hearing about the Holocaust from the perspective of a righteous Gentile as Jeannie shares her mother’s story, and inspires us all.”
She also was presented the Israel Medal of Honor, the country’s highest award, during a ceremony at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial.
Bringing Ms. Gut Opdyke’s story to South Florida blends seamlessly with the Lion of Judah mission to highlight women of valor and enrich the lives of charitable Jewish women.
2011 Lion of Judah Event - left to right, Ida Leightman, Karen Zemel, Guest Speaker Yanina Fleysher, Cindi Samson, Laura Goldblum, Lori-Ben-Ezra and Lori Mizels.
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
“Being a Lion of Judah has allowed me to grow as a human being and at the same time help Jews both in my community and around the world,” added event co-chair Amy Stolberg. “It has allowed me as a parent and role model to teach my children about the spirit of giving. Simply, I do it because I can and because giving back to those in need is what everyone who can should do.” Second Generation is a new group of Holocaust speakers who share the life stories from their parents’ first-hand experiences. Created in 1972, the Lion of Judah is a successful development vehicle symbolizing a woman’s dedication to the tradition of tzedakah. It serves as a reminder that each woman can make a difference in the world.
Last year’s Lion of Judah Chair, Lori Mizels, and her daughter Amy who is a Young Lion.
The Jewish Federation of Broward County raises funds to support the crucial work of 30 social and humanitarian agencies that help Jews in need in our own community, in Israel and around the world.
SOCIETY BROWARD
The event will be held Wed., Nov. 7, 2012, with cocktails at 11am and the program at noon, at the Hyatt Pier 66 Panorama Room (2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale). Couvert is $100.
Sun Sentinel
Her tale is part of a permanent exhibit in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She received a special commendation from The Vatican, and though she passed away in 2003, Ms. Gut Opdyke was posthumously awarded the Commander’s Cross, the Polish Medal of Honor.

Funny how “the kids” seem to visit more when the beach is at your doorstep. Of course, they love the beach and taking a dip in the pool, or maybe just watching the boats pass by on the Intracoastal. And dinners are always special when you dine together in the ocean view dining room. Afterward, everyone enjoys the music in our piano lounge. In the end, they may think they’re at a beachfront resort. But you’ll know it’s home! Call now for a complimentary ocean view dinner and tour.

urchase your tickets, pick out your outfits and pack your bags… The philanthropic event season is here.
