hen thinking about art at a macro level, there is a tendency to visualize masterpieces housed in a gallery or exhibit. But I find that when planning a special edition of Society Scene, it helps me to break down the topic – in this case, art – and view it as a series of topics versus one broad subject as a whole. “Something that is created with imagination … that is beautiful or that expresses ideas or feelings,” is Merriam-Webster’s definition of art. So when I stepped back to think about art on more of a micro level, I recognize that beautiful creations can be found in many facets of life including, but not bound to, institutions. When I appreciate beauty in everyday activities – like chopping summer vegetables or in Florida’s hurricane-season skies heavy with infinite hues of blue – I start to see art with more frequency. And when I think about the process of beauty, I’m forced to acknowledge its creation. Whether we’re moms who create a nest for our family, or coffee shop baristas who create hearts in cappuccinos, I see that – in essence – everyone is a creator. So this year’s issue naturally evolved to focus on creating. Through our photographers’ lenses we’ve documented several communityminded examples of creating right here in South Florida.
Special Marketing Section
With the process of creating in mind, this year we asked local artists to share why they make art on pages 10-11. Assistant Editor Keisha Hatchett has produced a calendar of arts-related events to provide a summer’s worth of interaction with art.
“When I say artist I mean the one who is building things … some with a brush – some with a shovel – some choose a pen,” Jackson Pollock

We’ve created this year’s Arts Issue to provide you the tools and inspiration for you to pick up a paintbrush – or a shovel – and create an art-filled life.

And because art doesn’t have to be complex, pages 26-27 feature several simple arts projects to ignite creativity in your own home – try them with friends, your children or alone and let yourself get lost in the process – remember, perfection is not the goal. If you’re inclined to explore creativity further, there’s also a list of locations in this feature where you can tap into your inner artist by taking a class.

n exhibit of creative art made of paper is on display in Delray Beach. Curator Melanie Johanson put together the “From Ordinary to Extraordinary: Paper as Art” exhibit, which runs through Aug. 24 at the Cornell Museum of Art & American Culture. She contacted galleries throughout the United States to assemble the collection created by artists who transform ordinary paper into works of art. Among those spotlighted is Bruce Helander. “He has done paper collage designs for New Yorker magazine covers, and private collector James Pappas loaned us Helander-created rare collages for this exhibit,” Johanson said. The exhibit, which uses all four galleries and the upper and lower atrium areas, features a range of pieces, from small framed works to life-sized
human and dog figures. There are 60 pieces from 20 artists in all. In the lower gallery, there are two life-sized paper figures of women chatting created by Will Kurtz, a Brooklyn artist. Kurtz drove his pieces to Delray Beach in a rented truck and set them up personally. In addition, his “Linda the Dog Walker” is in a lower gallery salon and features a woman holding the leashes of several dogs. Also featured are cut paper designs by Hiromi Moneyhun. The intricately cut works of black paper designs on one wall were painstakingly carved with an X-Acto knife. Her pieces begin as sketches and can take a month or longer to create. She drove from her home in Jacksonville Beach and spent five hours setting up the pieces. Recent visitors said they enjoyed the exhibit. “The intricacies of the
cutouts are truly outstanding works of art to see,” said Elissa Kagel, of Boynton Beach. “This exhibit displays amazing artistry.” “A beautiful and interesting exhibit,” said Beverly Goldstein, also of Boynton. “Just shows what you can create with talent and imagination.” Johanson said the exhibit was a labor of love. “I am extremely passionate about every piece in the museum,” she said. “I put the show together hoping visitors would feel the same enthusiasm I had about the works chosen. Overhearing visitors talk about how great the artwork is and how much they enjoy the exhibit has been rewarding. Paper art is something everyone understands and appreciates.” For more information, call 561-243-7922 or visit www.delraycenterforthearts.org. ■

he Delray Beach Playhouse kicks off its summer children’s theater July 12 with “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” The one-hour show takes the audience on a trip down the rabbit hole as Alice chases the White Rabbit, tangles with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game. The cast of 26 young actors, ages 7 to 16, auditioned for their roles in March. They’ve been rehearsing on weekends and five afternoons a week after school let out in June. “We all work our tails off to go above and beyond to give the kids the best experience and put on the best show,” said director Marla Gideos. Many of the children come back every summer. Mikayla Perry of Boynton Beach, 10, plays the Mad Hatter. This is her fifth season with the
theater and her most challenging role. Perry likes the part because it incorporates singing and dancing with acting. “You get to go all out with it and do whatever you want to, as long as it’s really crazy,” she said. Perry takes dance and vocal classes and acts in smaller shows during the school year. Since she was 6, she’s had her sights set on Broadway. Gina Cooper of Delray Beach has three daughters returning for another season. Meesha Cooper, 13, is back for a fifth year. She plays the White Rabbit. Lexie Cooper, 14, works backstage; Natalia Cooper, 16, is a camp counselor – both are in their fourth year. Through the hard work of putting on a show, Cooper said her girls learn responsibility and teamwork. “They learn there are times they have to do things they don’t want to, but at the end of
the day it makes the product they’re looking for,” she said. Many of the parents contribute to the team effort. Cooper and her husband volunteer backstage to ensure things run smoothly. Others help with costumes or props. The bonding and friendships between families and kids continues to grow throughout the year, Gideos said. “It’s a closeness I wouldn’t change for anything in the world,” she said. Gideos has nurtured the playhouse’s camp program for five years. The payoff is seeing kids come out of a shell and gain confidence – and continue with careers in theater. This summer is her “swan song,” Gideos said. She will be moving to Orlando. “I will miss it very much,” she said. ■

be Freed, 85, of Lantana, said he is not quite old enough to have seen the original Broadway production in 1944 of “On the Town,” iconic composer Leonard Bernstein’s first Broadway show. However, the Brooklyn native did see a revival of “On the Town” on Broadway, as well as the classic 1949 film starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Ann Miller and Betty Garrett about three sailors eager to find romance and explore New York City during a 24-hour shore leave. As such, Freed loved the concert version of the musical-comedy “On the Town,” which was performed June 22 by the 50-member Klezmer Company Orchestra (joined by six guest opera singers) at Florida Atlantic University’s Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium in Boca Raton. The concert was billed as the show’s Florida concert-version premiere. “The show was very creative,” Freed said. “They did an excellent job. I particularly liked the videos of New York City that were on the screens in the background. That brought back a lot of nostalgic memories
for me.” While the auditorium was filled with an estimated audience of nearly 2,000 people, the crowd definitely skewed older. “Yes, this is a show for the older people to enjoy,” said Shirley Ladin, 72, of Lantana. “The younger crowd probably wouldn’t get into it. They wouldn’t get the references.” The concert was the main event of the three-day inaugural “Spirit of America Festival: A Celebration of Music and Arts” (June 21-23) that FAU Libraries hosted to salute Leonard Bernstein. The concert was organized by Maestro Aaron Kula, director and conductor of KCO, the professional ensemble-in-residence at FAU Libraries. Kula worked with the Bernstein Organization in New York City for more than a year on the concert. Kula said: “We continue to be inspired by Bernstein’s creative genius. I am especially honored to be part of the Bernstein legacy and to conduct ‘On the Town’ as we celebrate the 70th anniversary since its Broadway debut.” The festival kicked off on Saturday, June 21 with “An Intimate Conversation with Jamie Bernstein,” a
conversation at FAU’s Wimberly Library about family and the Bernstein legacy with Leonard’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein – noted concert narrator, writer and broadcaster in her own right. On June 23, “Bernstein on Broadway” – a piano-vocal recital with commentary by South Florida theater critic Bill Hirschman – concluded the festival at Wimberly Library. During the recital, two distinguished vocalists performed selections from “West Side Story” and other songs composed by Bernstein, who often used New York City and Broadway as inspiration for his musicals. The festival showcased FAU Libraries’ Print Music Collection, Marvin and Sybil Weiner Spirit of America Collection, Harold L. Glasser Collection and other special collections. The festival was made possible by its sponsors: the Weiner Family, Marny Glasser, First Southern Bank and The University Club at FAU. For more information, call 561-297-2693 or email lysca@fau.edu. ■

If you’re feeling blocked, try one (or all) of these suggestions and let the inspiration come to you: MUNDANE: cook/bake; do laundry; re-pot plants; check out a book, from your local library. Sometimes the brightest ides come to us during mundane daily activities – like showering. GO FOR A WALK: sans your phone – maybe bring a camera. CINEMATIC: go see a movie – by yourself. GET LOST: in a dollar store, at the beach, on a bike ride. Doesn’t matter where. Allow yourself to get lost in a moment and then find yourself. PLAY: with a child, a dog or blow bubbles – chase the bubbles and see where they lead you. MUSIC: listen to music – live music, new music, create music; maybe even dance a little. Pretend no one’s watching. MAKE A MESS: try one of these arts projects. EDUCATE: take a class.
