THERE ARE LESSONS. AND THERE ARE LIFE LESSONS.

WE TEACH BOTH. Going to college should teach you about more than what you learn in books and in the classroom. At Nova Southeastern University, one of our core values is community. Our students have taken that value to heart, and have learned so much about themselves and others in the process.

SOCIETY BROWARD • BR

As a premier, private research university focused on academic and research excellence, NSU is proud to give back to the community: – Involved in approximately 2,000 community activities every year. – NSU students logged 10,214 hours of service in the 2012-2013 academic year. – Ranked third among all private colleges nationally in the percentage of federal work-study dollars that it devotes to community service (Source: Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University).

– NSU is one of only 37 universities nationwide to be designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with both “Community Engagement” and “high research activity” classifications. – Named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in 2013. – Noted research university with more than 200 research projects currently underway, including developing anti-cancer therapies, treating chronic fatigue syndrome, restoring coral reefs, regenerating teeth with stem cells, and protecting wildlife through DNA forensics.

NSU Sharks celebrate another successful service project for Tomorrow’s Rainbow with their “fins up.”

NSU hosts a number of charity events on campus, including:

Tomorrow’s Rainbow relies heavily on volunteers for its success, and NSU students have contributed in a big way. By participating in more than six major service projects, including farm cleanups, construction, and benefit car washes, their hours of dedication and determination are working to ensure that a child’s suffering is replaced by smiles, hope, and healing.

Sun Sentinel

In just one example of community involvement, a group of NSU student is giving back by joining forces with Tomorrow’s Rainbow, a local nonprofit that helps children dealing with the loss of a loved one. Through a combination of animal therapy, counseling and peer interaction, children learn to cope with their grief and feel joy again.

Thank you:

T

raditionally Society Scene’s annual Volunteer Guide is all about community service and giving back to one’s community. So when this year’s publication date coincided with the anniversary of 9/11, we couldn’t help but be inspired by the volunteer first responders from that day in our nation’s history. The first responders of 9/11 were the individuals who stopped what they were doing – many giving their lives – and rushed to the service of others. This selfless act is in many ways what volunteers nationwide do year-round in their own communities. In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. The bipartisan holiday is led by the Corporation for National and

Co Community Service, MyGoodDeed and other nonprofits across the country, in an effort to implement one of the largest charitable service days in our country’s history. The cover features a photograph of local volunteer firefighter Robin Russell and Sydney Hatch, 5, at the Plantation Fire Department – the largest volunteer fire department in Florida, established in 1957. Beginning on page 42, we share the stories of five Broward volunteers who give back in different ways throughout their community. To us, these volunteers are the first responders to our community’s needs. To go with the 9/11 theme, we photographed the volunteers in first responder settings. Thanks to Broward County Sherriff’s Office, Fort Lauderdale Mounted Police Unit, Plantation Fire Department and West Palm Beach Police

Fo Fort Lauderdale Police Department: Captain Rick Maglione, Sgt. Hu Hugo Fontalvo, Officer Charlie Sierra and Officer Duval Madrigal; Broward Sheriff’s Office: Mike Jachles, Sgt. Chris Ponticelli, Deputy Nick Frey and Deputy Sam Pagano; Plantation Fire De Department Battalion Chief Joel Gordon; West Palm Beach Police: Chief Vince Demasi, Unwin Jones, Sgt. David Bernhardt; and Wendy Hensley with the City of West Palm Beach Department for sharing our vision and giving us full access to their equipment and resources. Other examples of the community working together can be found in Scene & Be Seen, starting on page 14. There we share photographs of individuals working side-by-side for the sake of nonprofits. For a look at the organizations in your community, pull out the volunteer listings starting on page 19. Sorted by city, the listings share information about the nonprofit and volunteer opportunities available at each location. And taking a break from the office, we joined some true first responders on the starting line at the third annual “Tunnel to Towers 5K,” which took place Sept. 7 in Fort Lauderdale. The race was founded in

honor of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who was last seen running from the Brooklyn Battery tunnel to reach the World Trade Center with 75 pounds of gear strapped to his back. We were inspired not only by the 1,500 people who showed up to participate but the dozens of firefighters, police, sheriff’s deputies, military and SWAT team members who ran all 3.1 miles in full uniforms with oxygen tanks and bullet proof vests. On this anniversary of when our country came together as a nation united by grief, we’re reminded that it’s always important to join forces. Only this time, we’re united by strength and inspiration in the power of giving back.

(Noun) the use or involvement of NSU students, employees and faculty for volunteer labor, esp. in community services

I

t’s in our blood. Volunteerism is at the heart of NSU’s core value of community — it is engrained in our culture. Preparing students for their future is about more than just learning about business, psychology, marine biology, medicine or any of the 150 degree programs that Nova Southeastern University offers. NSU prepares our students to be thoughtful and contemporary citizens of the community. This does not happen by itself. It is a product of individual dedication and continual reinforcement of the importance of community George Hanbury in classes, campus activities and everything NSU President that we do at NSU. Our students volunteered an incredible 10,214 hours of service this past academic year, resulting in a tangible social and economic impact in our community. A few NSU highlights: • Named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll • Designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Community Engaged” university • Dedicated resources for veteran and service member community • Permanent home to Special Olympics Broward County • NSU’s dental clinics are the largest in the state, attending to underserved patients on a sliding scale, with more than 22,000 patients and 130,000 procedures performed in 2012 Going the extra mile The NSU community organizes, hosts and participates in nearly 2,000 community events each year, such as the annual American Heart Association’s “Heart Walk” and the Autism Speaks’ annual “Walk Now for Autism.” This past year, students organized the inaugural “Motion for the Ocean 5K,” benefiting a local nonprofit that uses marine science to support at-risk youth. The university’s annual “A Day for Children” event brings nearly 10,000 people to campus for a fun-filled day of games and free health care for children up to 15 years old, all provided through NSU’s Health Care Centers. Other students collaborated with Broward County Public Schools to mentor one-on-one with elementary school students in grades 1-5 who are not performing at grade level. Tutors help students with subject matter while contributing toward increasing students‘ self-esteem and their motivation to learn—important skills to impart on the next generation of community leaders. These are just a few of the things we do at NSU. I encourage everyone to be involved in their community by volunteering and mentoring our youth. All in the name of community!

I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.” Dunbar said it’s “a great idea” to have a sergeant and firefighter on his coaching staff because many of his players don’t have a father figure or male role model in their homes, and Jacques and McGee bring “workforce knowledge and what it’s like to struggle and be successful and strive for the things you want in life.” Jacques and McGee both played football in high school. Jacques played at Miami Norland. McGee played at Fort Lauderdale High. And both had sons who graduated this past spring who played on the Flying L‘s football team. They both agreed that they

find a way to juggle their careers and coaching because they love working with youngsters. “I’ve always had good interaction with kids,” said McGee, who is also the head coach for junior varsity at Fort Lauderdale. “I think kids hear me. And I like to see them make progress.” Jacques, who noted working with teenagers is “probably one of the things that keeps me young,” echoed McGee’s sentiments. “It’s really rewarding when you see a kid that can barely tie his shoes, and three years later you see the kid graduating and going to college,” he said. “I’ve always liked coaching. I started when I was 19 for about five years, and I’m glad I’m back doing it. It’s always been something that’s been really fulfilling to me.”

rofessor Andrew Kirschner teaches educational leadership at Nova Southeastern University where he trains students to become deans and principals of school systems. But during his time as a mentor at the Jim & Jan Moran Club of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (BGCBC), his area of expertise ranges from vegetable juicing to chess competition. One aspect that attracts Kirschner to volunteering at BGCBC is the flexibility of what the program can provide outside a regimented classroom setting. Logging 363 hours in the last year, Kirschner has implemented a pen pal program that exposes members to different cultures; a role models group that promotes leadership and good deeds; a cooking class where members make juices, smoothies, fruit salads and learn about the importance of healthy eating; and a chess club that teaches the craft of the game and promotes sportsmanship. Kirschner focuses on teaching the children about healthy lifestyles, showing compassion to animals, and instilling overall good values – like being kind and positive individuals. Pulling up to the club last year he noticed a student looking out the window into the parking lot. Walking into the building, Kirschner asked the boy what he was looking for; he replied that he was looking for him. “It helped solidify how easy it is to make an impact in someone’s life,” he said. “We all have the power to bring good in the world, and volunteering is a constant reminder of the impact one person can have on these kids.”

At 7:15 a.m., Gibson opens the facility and preps for the other volunteers who come in around 8:30 a.m. While her focus is on the felines, she also orientates new volunteers, maintains their schedules, does the supply shopping for the center, assists the CEO and transports the cats when they need to be seen by a veterinarian. Her motivation for involvement comes from seeing the direct impact volunteers have every day; the center has only two paid staffers. Volunteering four to five days a week, her role at the center has become her full-time career. When the cats are hurting, she’s hurting. But she maintains perspective by always doing the best she can, “otherwise you get crippled when you can’t help.”

“There’s no better feeling than that.” Nate also traveled to Tallahassee to speak with legislators about implementing the “Normalcy Bill” (SB164), to give foster parents rights to make decisions (like taking the child for a haircut) without having to get a court order. “Volunteering has given me a completely different perspective on life and I can take that into every case. It’s taught me that even when things are tough, you can do whatever you set your mind to do.” PHOTO BY KARA STARZYK

anaging paralegal and client communications director of a Fort Lauderdale real estate law firm, Nate D. Handley, 33, completed the 30-hour training to be a Guardian ad Litem in 2010. Guardian ad Litems are trained volunteers appointed by the court to protect the rights and advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected. When Handley receives a case, he reviews the basic details and visits the child’s current guardians to educate them on the Guardian ad Litem program and what his role will be. Handley then introduces himself to the child/children to create a bond and establish trust. “I’m there as a friend, as an advocate. I ask if there is anything they want the judge to know or anything they need.” He documents their progress by meeting with their teachers and other adults involved in their life. After 90 days, a court decision is made – sometimes this is re-unifying them with their parents, but sometimes parental termination is recommended. In addition to Handley’s presence in the courtroom, he actively advocates for Voices for Children of Broward County program, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the Guardian Ad Litem. Leading a community outreach committee, he attends events to educate the public about the program’s significance and its need for donors. “Usually going to court is very stressful. But one of the happiest days is adoption day because we’ve worked so hard on getting these kids their forever family,” he said. In one case involving a 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, Handley walked into the courtroom and the kids screamed his name, running toward him almost knocking him over with their excitement. Knowing he played a small part in the kids possibly having a better future is the reinforcement for all his hard work.

nce a week, two groups gather at the Parkland Library and Tamarac Community Center for two hours where volunteer Janice Indek provides a topic to be explored through their writing. The topic is used as a creative platform for personal discovery, though sometimes individuals stray to a topic of their own and sometimes the group veers into a philosophical conversation about life. The members range in age from 40 to 93. Some have no writing experience; others have been published. Some use the experience as a therapeutic art form, while others are interested in documenting their family’s lives for future generations and some are just interested in developing a new skill. The one thing they have in common is they’re curious about writing. Indek, a published author and poet in her early 80s, has led the writing groups for seven years. She helps people explore issues from their lives, like loss or love. She encourages them to conjure their first memories into words, which often opens the floodgates to a lifetime of discovery. Promoting positive feedback and a nurturing environment, the groups work together for everyone to feel comfortable sharing. “The discussions make us a family and our experience together gives us a greater understanding than we could’ve reached on our own,” she said. The groups have published 11 manuscripts with two more in the works. The members take turns reading their work aloud each week and then provide commentary about the topic or constructive criticism. Writing was all Indek knew, so she channeled her expertise into facilitating the volunteer program. And when her husband died three years ago she recounted that the classes were what kept her afloat through the loss. Indek believes that writing is a form of “creativity that doesn’t stop until you stop; we’re writing the legacy of our lives and the experience PHOTO BY KARA STARZYK keeps us alive.”

n 1992, Coral Springs resident Dawn Petito began losing her eyesight to Diabetic retinopathy. She visited Lighthouse of Broward, an organization that provides training and rehabilitation for visually impaired individuals of all ages, where she went through their adult program. Recognizing the program’s impact on her life, she began volunteering there in 2011 when she lost her position with the U.S. Postal Service. And she hasn’t stopped since. The legally blind 49-year-old and her guide dog, Clyde, volunteer two or three times a week for eight hours a day. Working in the organization’s development department, Petito searches for supporters and funding in the community. She also helps at the front desk and welcomes new clients with her story. “We’re like one big family here, and hopefully I can help put someone at ease,” she says. Petito knows how crucial the programs are for people like herself, so she’s dedicated to keeping it running for others. Petito takes pride in assisting Jose Lopez Masso, director of community relations and development, and the rest of the team in helping with the day-to-day tasks, but attending the fundraising events where she witnesses the culmination of their hard work is her favorite part. “It feels nonstop, like we’re always running around, and then to see it come together is such a great feeling,” she said. For Petito, losing her eyesight doesn’t mean she’s lost her vision to make an impact.
