Tomorrow’s Rainbow relies heavily on volunteers for its success, and NSU students have contributed in a big way. By participating in more than six major service projects, including farm cleanups, construction, and benefit car washes, their hours of dedication and determination are working to ensure that a child’s suffering is replaced by smiles, hope, and healing.

In just one example of community involvement, a group of NSU student is giving back by joining forces with Tomorrow’s Rainbow, a local nonprofit that helps children dealing with the loss of a loved one. Through a combination of animal therapy, counseling and peer interaction, children learn to cope with their grief and feel joy again.

raditionally Society Scene’s annual Volunteer Guide is all about community service and giving back to one’s community. So when this year’s publication date coincided with the anniversary of 9/11, we couldn’t help but be inspired by the volunteer first responders from that day in our nation’s history. The first responders of 9/11 were the individuals who stopped what they were doing – many giving their lives – and rushed to the service of others. This selfless act is in many ways what volunteers nationwide do year-round in their own communities. In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. The bipartisan holiday is led by the Corporation for National and

Comm Community Service, MyGoodDeed and other nonprofits across the country, in an effort to implement one of the largest charitable service days in our country’s history. The cover features a photograph of local volunteer firefighter Robin Russell and Sydney Hatch, 5, at the Plantation Fire Department – the largest volunteer fire department in Florida, established in 1957. Beginning on page 36, we share the stories of five Palm Beach volunteers who give back in different ways throughout their community. To us, these volunteers are the first responders to our community’s needs. To go with the 9/11 theme, we photographed the volunteers in first responder settings. Sorted by city, the listings share information about the nonprofit and volunteer opportunities available at each location. And taking a break from the office, we joined some true first responders on the starting line at the third annual “Tunnel to Towers 5K,” which took place Sept. 7 in

Fort Lauderdale. The race was founded in honor of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who was last seen running from the Brooklyn Battery tunnel to reach the World Trade Center with 75 pounds of gear strapped to his back. We were inspired not only by the 1,500 people who showed up to participate but the dozens of firefighters, police, sheriff’s deputies, military and SWAT team members who ran all 3.1 miles in full uniforms with oxygen tanks and bullet proof vests. On this anniversary of when our country came together as a nation united by grief, we’re reminded that it’s always important to join forces. Only this time, we’re united by strength and inspiration in the power of giving back.

t’s in our blood. Volunteerism is at the heart of NSU’s core value of community — it is engrained in our culture. Preparing students for their future is about more than just learning about business, psychology, marine biology, medicine or any of the 150 degree programs that Nova Southeastern University offers. NSU prepares our students to be thoughtful and contemporary citizens of the community. This does not happen by itself. It is a product of individual dedication and continual reinforcement of the importance of community George Hanbury in classes, campus activities and everything NSU President that we do at NSU. Our students volunteered an incredible 10,214 hours of service this past academic year, resulting in a tangible social and economic impact in our community. A few NSU highlights: • Named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll • Designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Community Engaged” university • Dedicated resources for veteran and service member community • Permanent home to Special Olympics Broward County • NSU’s dental clinics are the largest in the state, attending to underserved patients on a sliding scale, with more than 22,000 patients and 130,000 procedures performed in 2012 Going the extra mile The NSU community organizes, hosts and participates in nearly 2,000 community events each year, such as the annual American Heart Association’s “Heart Walk” and the Autism Speaks’ annual “Walk Now for Autism.” This past year, students organized the inaugural “Motion for the Ocean 5K,” benefiting a local nonprofit that uses marine science to support at-risk youth. The university’s annual “A Day for Children” event brings nearly 10,000 people to campus for a fun-filled day of games and free health care for children up to 15 years old, all provided through NSU’s Health Care Centers. Other students collaborated with Broward County Public Schools to mentor one-on-one with elementary school students in grades 1-5 who are not performing at grade level. Tutors help students with subject matter while contributing toward increasing students‘ self-esteem and their motivation to learn—important skills to impart on the next generation of community leaders. These are just a few of the things we do at NSU. I encourage everyone to be involved in their community by volunteering and mentoring our youth. All in the name of community!

Society Scene marks this year’s National Day of Service by highlighting five local volunteers who are making a difference in the Palm Beach community.

ue Comoglio has always had an appreciation for marine life and a desire to protect it. And with that goal in mind, the 60-year-old Deerfield Beach resident finds herself on the beach before dawn three days a week from March to November. As a volunteer marine turtle specialist with Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, she helps with sea turtle nesting surveys. Comoglio, who has volunteered with the center for 10 years, is known for her attention to detail, which has greatly contributed to the research quality of the sea turtle conservation program. But her volunteer work doesn’t stop there. At night, she also helps educate the public at the center’s “Sea Turtle Nesting Walks and Hatchling Releases.” In addition to her volunteer work, Comoglio works 30 to 35 hours a week at a running store in Fort Lauderdale. Four years ago she united her two passions – running and marine life – for the center’s first “April Green Turtle Gallop.” Comoglio’s event has raised more than $23,000 since its inception.

ritz Postlethwaite wears many hats. During the day, he’s a management consultant, and in his off time he’s one of the go-to volunteers for the Miami Dolphins Special Teams. The 63-year-old Boca Raton resident became involved with the organization in late 2009 after hearing The Who was scheduled to play the Super Bowl halftime show. As a former tour manager for KISS, this rock ‘n’ roll journeyman met The Who while touring and offered his services to the organization to serve as stage crew. After the event, he and about 5,000 other volunteers stuck around. Today, the organization has 10,000 volunteers that help out in the community. One of Postlethwaite’s responsibilities is recruiting and managing Miami Dolphins Special Teams volunteers that help at events sponsored by different nonprofits. He’s also a key player in the organization’s largest community event, “Dolphins Cycling Challenge,” which has generated more than $3 million for cancer research. For the past three years he has run the event route from City Place, one of its six legs. He will once again be in charge of that location for this year’s event, scheduled for Nov. 3-4. Postlethwaite said one of his favorite parts of volunteering is seeing the makeup of the other volunteers. “I get to watch the generations get involved,” he said. “I like seeing kids getting involved early and see people of all ages helping out.”

The 53-year-old started volunteering with Best Foot Forward two years ago after deciding she wanted to help children learn to read and write. “There is a need for children to be mentored,” she said. “We need to set children up to be successful.” The Boca Raton resident works one-on-one with third-grade students in the mornings and with high school students during lunch. “Self-esteem rises with a little extra one-on-one attention,” she said. Last year, she began tutoring a high school freshman that had never learned to read or write because he had been abused and neglected throughout his life. After she took him under her wing, driving 40 minutes to meet with him twice a week, the student is now reading at a second-grade level. “If students can get to a functional reading level, the chance of being in school and staying in school are so much more successful,” Chandeck said.

eeing his grandfather battle Alzheimer’s led Curtis Roegiers through the doors of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center. And now when patients walk through those same doors, Roegiers’ face is the first they see. “My grandfather went to [this center] for a number of years,” he said. “I saw how it was for people with Alzheimer’s, and I wanted to help.” The 26-year-old from Boca Raton has been a greeter since March 2011, giving nearly 1,000 hours of time to the program. Guests and their caregivers are greeted by Roegiers’ cheerful and outgoing personality three days a week. He knows the name of each guest and caregiver, and even knows their modes of transportation. “As a greeter it is your job to get [the guest’s] day started nicely,” he said.

n less than a year, Al Chansky has made a big impact on the patients and staff at Hospice by the Sea. The 71-year-old volunteers three evenings a week at the center and sees three patients in the community. Chansky, a retired nurse, chose to donate his time to hospice after using the service with his wife, who succumbed to ovarian cancer. While at the center, the Deerfield Beach resident relieves nurses and aides so they can take care of patients. He meets patients and their families, serves dinner and feeds those that need assistance. Chansky is a companion for his patients in the community, talking with them and taking them on walks. “I get more back from the patients than I give,” he said. One of his most memorable experiences was the gratitude he received from a caregiver when Chansky volunteered to watch her husband on Christmas while she accompanied her mother to mass. “She was so grateful that she invited me to Christmas dinner,” he said. “That was probably one of the best experiences that I’ve had, and there are so many.”
