60 seconds with
Paul Sweeney Hi Paul, welcome to Faithful+Gould Middle East! You are new to the region after joining us from AECOM in the UK. What prompted the move? I was very keen to take up a new professional challenge, and after some interesting conversations with Spencer and Campbell, decided to join F+G in Riyadh.
Do you have any first impressions so far? I have really enjoyed the move to KSA so far. Clearly the ME is very different to the UK, but after nearly 6 months in the Kingdom, I remain as excited as I was when I arrived. The obvious first impressions relate to climate and culture. Arriving from Scotland, there is a need to adjust to the temperature change, but the dry heat of Riyadh is more agreeable than the high humidity elsewhere in the ME. The business culture too is very different and at times can be challenging. The need to be fully prepared for meetings which may not take place for many hours after the scheduled time is a new concept. But if you are aware that this is likely, just plan accordingly. Agility is clearly a requirement for working in the region.
Tell us a bit about your career to date? Prior to joining F+G, I was a partner in Mackenzie Partnership until 2007, a partner in Davis Langdon until 2010, and then a director in AECOM until July 2017. Amongst other things, my professional experience has involved delivering the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, completing over 70 schools and hospital projects under PFI or PPP type procurement routes throughout Scotland and several stand alone major building projects in the retail, education and leisure sectors.
What will your role as head of programme management involve? This role is precisely the kind of challenge I was hoping for. My simple objective is to help the leadership team in the ME and KSA to grow the business in line with the business plan targets for the region, with the right blend of business development success, recruitment, training and high quality professional services being delivered to clients on all our projects.
What are your top three objectives? My top 3 objectives are: 1. Get the Al Wedyan development in Riyadh secured, mobilised with the right team, and then running smoothly as quickly as possible. 2. Meet my KSA colleagues and understand their strengths, ambitions and where their futures lie. 3. Help to build a strong, agile and profitable business in KSA.
If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be? Professional golfer – but a really good one!
Describe yourself in 3 words – Approachable, enthusiastic, focussed.
If you could have a magic power what would it be? To make wishes come true.
What has been your greatest challenge / biggest achievement a) personal, b) professional Personal – Trying to avoid indigestion with all the Lebanese food being consumed! My biggest achievement is my kids, Jordan and Rowan, who are now both at University. They are very talented, so clearly take after their mother. Professional – Every client, programme and project presents a different challenge. You need to understand each one to develop the right solution. My most notable achievement so far is the delivery of the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Finally, what is the best piece of advice you have ever heard? You are entitled to nothing. You only get out of life what you put into it.
Living by the values Zain Davids
Francisco Batista
Quinie Caba
Zain has showcased the professional value by building a great relationship with the client on ADIB. He worked additional hours to ensure challenging deadlines were reached, and most importantly demonstrated added value by making savings the client wasn’t aware he could achieve. This has resulted in temporary deployment being made into permanent deployment for Zavid!
Francisco has a really positive attitude, nothing is ever a problem and he is the first to respond when someone needs help. He is enthusiastic around helping others and motivates his colleagues, especially junior staff who he mentors and provides help to on a regular basis.
Quinie joined the business in 2008 as a refreshment assistant in the Dubai office. Soon after her enthusiasm and dedication to learn became apparent and she moved into the role of Document Controller for the Dubai Office.

You issue a Request For Inquiry (RFI) Quotation to potential suppliervs to provide construction work. You have worked with all three firms and think one of them has consistently done superior work. The bids are all very close but your favorite firm’s bid is slightly more expensive and will push costs over budget. Should you reveal the lowest bid to your preferred firm so they can come in just under it? After all, it is better for your company if they get superior quality. What would you do? Work anniversaries Paul Kistner Finance Director
Paul Kistner originally joined Atkins in 2007 as a project accountant and in 2014 joined the Faithful+Gould Middle East business. He currently holds the postion of finance director and sits on the Middle East Leadership team. When I first joined Atkins I didn’t expect to still be in the company 10 years later! Atkins has provided many opportunities to move around the company and develop my career which I’m very grateful for. But I’m most grateful for the last three years as part of a brilliant F+G team which is full of energetic, talented and fun people that I enjoy working with everyday.
Simon Dawson Regional Director
Simon Dawson began his career in Faithful+Gould’s Edinburgh Office back in 1990, almost 27 years ago (with short career break in 1995). Since moving to the Middle East he has spent time in the UAE and KSA and is currently based in Riyadh, working on the Al Wedyan project. “An opportunity arose internally as the commercial manager on a new F+G commission, Saudi Arabia’s ‘National Water Company’ to which I tentatively enquired about, and before I knew it I was accepted by the client, visa processed, bags packed and was jetting off to work in the Middle East all in the space of 8 weeks! Faithful+Gould has provided me with the opportunity to work on many diverse projects all over the UK and Middle East, covering every work sector; retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, commercial offices (government & private), civils infrastructure, industrial, transportation, commercial offices (government & private). I started in the F+G Edinburgh office working alongside Donald Lawson for four years, and at that point the Edinburgh office only consisted of about 20 staff, how things have changed. One of the most memorable projects Donald and I worked on together was the pathfinder Falkirk Schools PFI project, the first education PFI project in Scotland (1995), advising the client, Falkirk Council. It still brings a smile to my face when I remember the client receptionist announcing “Lawson & Dawson” are here! I can honestly say there has never been a dull moment working for F+G, working on some amazing projects, in amazing locations with a great bunch of colleagues.”
Kudamaduwage Fernando Quantity Surveyor
Kudamaduwage joined the Faithful+Gould business as a quantity surveyor on the prestigious JLT project in Dubai. He then moved to Abu Dhabi in 2012 to join the Atkins team to provide commercial services to the client for the Al Forsan Hotel Development. He had provided effective support for the client to successfully complete the project and hand over to the operator- Marriott International. He now specialises in hospitality projects and currently based on Rawdhat Residential project in Abu Dhabi.
Brian Fisher Regional Director
Brian joined the business with the Confluence acquisition in 2013. As our head of project management, Brian is responsible for the business development and delivery of regional project management operations within the Middle East. “10 years – wow! I was fitter, thinner and had dark hair when I joined the F+G family. The time has flown by and I have had great experiences along the way. Even more exciting is what is to come for F+G in the future.”
‘During my career with F+G, I have been fortunate to work with an excellent working environment with the project team members in F+G and Atkins. In this 10 years, I have developed my skills as a post contract quantity surveyor to deal with complex commercial issues with the contractors and assisted the project team and the client to resolve them without going in to major dispute level or disagreement. I am looking forward to further develop my skills in quantity surveying and assist the client to deliver the projects as per their requirement’

Did you know? Flexible working The Flexible Working Policy has now been made formal and includes the opportunity to request a new working pattern. This may suit those that wish to have a formal arrangement, for example, requesting to change your hours to 7am-5pm.
If you are office based and request a formal change to your current working pattern, you will be required to be in the office during the core hours of 9am and 4.30pm. The completion of the remainder of the contracted hours should be agreed with your line manager. (See AXIS for more)
You must complete your PDR by Tuesday 9 January 2018. The PDR window has been brought forward to align to the SNCLavalin financial year (January to December). This means you will be reviewing performance and development for a 9 month period.
