Rotorua

6

A famous tourist destination rich in history and culture, surrounded by stunning, native flora and fauna.

I Rotorua Canopy Tours (p 17)

As one of the most active geothermal and volcanic regions of the world, many of Rotorua’s attractions are based around its greatest natural assets; the lakes and geothermal activity, a fascinating combination of the bizarre and beautiful.

D

iscover this famous heartland of gleaming lakes, bubbling mud, hot springs and New Zealand’s captivating Maori culture. Host to some of the world’s most incredible earth forces, the city sits astride a major fault line which surfaces south of Taupo in the form of the volcanoes Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. It continues through Rotorua and out to sea to surface again in the form of White Island. SPA DESTINATION Rotorua is renowned for seething thermal activity; boiling mud, hissing steam, exploding geysers and natural hot mineral springs. In 1883 it was constituted a special town under the Thermal Springs Act, dating back to when the Pink and White Terraces were considered the eighth wonder of the world, only to be destroyed by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. With a reputation as a spa destination, visitors travelled from all over the world to marvel at the beauty of silica formations and bathe in the therapeutic mineral waters of the natural hot springs. Rich in minerals, the unique cleansing and stimulating properties of thermal mud and health-giving qualities of the thermal waters are still popular body care treatments today with visitors wanting to rejuvenate and relax. HISTORY & CULTURE As the heartland of Maori culture Rotorua’s enveloping warmth, undeniable spirit and a deep sense of heritage weaves through the many Maori experiences you will encounter during your stay. Rotorua in Maori means ‘second lake’, its history dating back to circa AD 1350 when the area was originally settled by Polynesian voyagers in the canoe ‘Te Arawa’. Many legends abound in this region, from the story of how Ihenga discovered the lakes to the love story of beautiful young Hinemoa and handsome warrior Tutanekai. Today, Te Arawa descendants share their culture, history, art, music and language

within a variety of enriching encounters. Whether enjoying a hangi (food cooked underground) and cultural performance, traditional massage, or visiting a Maori carver or weaver, you are sure to experience ‘manaakitanga’ or Maori hospitality. This traditional value is a responsibility that implies guardianship over the land, the treasures, the people and the visitors. ADVENTURE APLENTY! Among its many attractions, Rotorua boasts an array of must see and do experiences and adventures that have become synonymous with this city. Aside from nature’s fascinating gems, geothermal wonderland and warm spirited indigenous culture, this region is a perfect destination for relaxation. The diversity of the Rotorua landscape lends itself to endless choices to enjoy the outdoors and almost everything is within close proximity to the city centre. Within minutes of town you can be walking or biking in a giant 5,000 hectare Redwood forest, on a farm, amidst native forest, at a trout sanctuary, in a wildlife reserve or paddling over a seven metre waterfall. Balance the exciting and energetic with some culture and retail, by a visit to Rotorua’s inner city precincts from the picturesque lakefront to Kuirau Park and two distinct inner city shopping areas. Spend a tranquil afternoon strolling around the historic Government Gardens; an interesting combination of English country village and geothermal with its Polynesian Spa, Elizabethan style Museum, rose gardens plus croquet, petanque and bowling greens. Wander along Rotorua’s lakefront, a beautiful area to relax, explore, find a café or bar and just watch the world go by. There’s a playground for the kids, pedal boats and pontoon boats, or for some excitement, parasailing and jet boating are right there. Unique opportunities and experiences are a big part of Rotorua’s attractions, bringing a smile to young and old.

7

T

here’s no doubt, Rotorua knows how to have fun and the region will keep you busy for days. Whether you’re whizzing down a hydroslide or rolling downhill in a giant bubble, hunting, fishing, jet boating, zip lining through forest canopy, or heading off-road, every activity offers you some thrills and will challenge you in ways you never thought possible.

8

THE BEST PLACE TO MAKE A SPLASH! With 18 crystal clear lakes dotted around New Zealand’s first tourist destination, spending some time on the water is an obvious must-do. Appreciating the myriad of lakes’ contrasting beauty is all the more dramatic when you consider many of them are extinct volcanoes. Some are so remote, blanketed by protective forest the best way to see them is from the air.

The main lakes, numerous rivers and streams are an aquatic paradise abounding with incredible experiences, excitement and fast-paced adventure. With all this water around you can exhaust every possibility from kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, white water rafting, water skiing, jet boating and cruising.

“Rotorua knows how to have fun”

Play Lots to do, how to choose! Whatever the adventure or challenge you’re looking for, Rotorua is the place to do it. If you prefer more leisurely pursuits there’s still plenty to keep you stimulated without living on the edge or scaring yourself witless.

I Kaitiaki Adventures (p 11)

On a more leisurely note you could soak in a lake-edge thermal hot pool, discover magical glowworm caves or if fishing is more your passion, you’re in the right place; Rotorua is one of the easiest places in the country to catch a trout. The surrounding rivers boast an impressive selection of rapids and waterfalls with different grades of difficulty. A white water enthusiast’s dream! Only on the Kaituna River, can you paddle the highest (7 metres) commercially rafted waterfall in the world. For more thrills the Wairoa River cascades through boulder strewn canyons with some of the finest white water and big drops. After all that, Rotorua is sure to leave you excited, satisfied and yearning to stay longer!

tarawera A CULTURAL, HISTORICAL AND NATURAL GEM 10

Lake Tarawera offers it all – history, natural beauty and a perfect spot for walking, camping, swimming and water sports. It’s even one of the best places in the country for astro-photography. Once New Zealand’s tourist hot spot in the 19th century, the Pink and White Terraces enthralled overseas visitors as the eighth wonder of the natural world. In 1886 the Mt Tarawera eruption drastically changed the beautiful landscape of Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve as volcanic ash and mud blanketed the landscape, obliterating the magnificent Terraces beneath Lake Rotomahana. Surrounded by hills of regenerated native forest and dominated by Mt Tarawera, Tarawera is one of the deeper, larger lakes of the region. Kayak around secluded bays or meander through the bush and catch the water taxi to Hot Water Beach – a special lakeside location where a small stream trickles down and into the lake. At this extraordinary spot you can create a hot sandy hole to soak in. The Tarawera Trail along the southern side of the lake is regarded as one of the finest walks in New Zealand, renowned for breathtaking views and quiet picnic spots. Among the many popular walking tracks around Lake Tarawera, the native forest, river-edge Tarawera River Walk to the spectacular Tarawera Falls is rated as one of the best short walks in New Zealand. Whether you choose to venture out for the day or stay lakeside, switching off is effortless in this truly special place. Tarawera is a world of wonderful natural experiences – an absolute must to explore!

The aerial adventure, suspended high above ancient New Zealand forest, tells the inspiring story of a conservation project you’re helping to fund. No one can describe this experience better than their own customers; “Rotorua Canopy Tours is more than just a zipline tour, seamlessly combining fun and adventure, with conservation and education creating an authentic, personalised experience!” Fly high above native forest from a bird’s perspective, swooping between treetop platforms perched above the canopy of an ancient forest. This is a three hour guided zipline eco-tour through one of the most pristine magical native forests in New Zealand. You’ll navigate a 1.2 kilometre network of ziplines, swing bridges and treetop platforms up to 22 metres high in the canopy. The tour is an authentic personalised, small group experience started four years ago in 2012 with a team of four staff, now grown to 35 people in peak season. The team of quintessential kiwi guides will bring the forest to life, get to know every customer, ensuring each has the experience of a lifetime to create lifelong memories.

You’ll be educated, enthralled and inspired by their conservation enterprise. Every ticket includes a contribution towards the Canopy Tours vision of restoring the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve to a prehuman eco-system. Along the way you’ll learn how 20% of the reserve is now free from non-native species. Thousands of possums, rats and stoats that destroy the native flora and fauna have been removed by the project. This adventure is suitable for everyone, as long as you can comfortably walk one kilometre and are under the maximum weight of 120kgs. pounamu THE GIFT OF GREENSTONE Originally carved and sharpened into weapons and tools by Maori because of its extreme hardness and durability, the use of greenstone can be traced back to the 12th Century. Pounamu is the Maori name for Nephrite Jade and was given the name Greenstone in the 18th Century by the first European explorers. Pounamu is treasured, valuable and possesses spiritual significance. This highly prized stone has been used by Maori to denote status and authority, for adornment, and for making peace. Pounamu has special significance for Maori in that they believe the stone absorbs the spiritual power (mana) of the wearer, and because it is considered such a powerful treasure (taonga) should be given as a gift, and is an honour to receive. There are four main types of Pounamu, distinguished by their colour and transulence; kawakawa, kahurangi, inanga and tangiwai. The first three are nephrite, while tangiwai is bowenite. Pounamu is found only in the South Island. While more contemporary carving designs are emerging, there are five traditional designs that have been carved for centuries. Hei matau; the fish hook that represents strength, good luck and safe travel across water. Koru; the new unfurling fern that represents new life, growth and peace. Tiki; represents the first man.

picnic spots OUR TOP 5

From family-friendly to natural hot springs, we’ve unlocked some local gems that take ‘scenic’ to an entire new level.

34

Tarawera Falls: Great for the day adventurer, locals can’t rave about enough about this spectacular spot. The picnic aspect almost takes a side-line because the view of falls is why you’re really there. The water surges out of fissures in a large rock cliff-face, the cliff being the end of an ancient lava flow that is believed to have poured from an erupting Mt Tarawera about 11,000 years ago. An easy 20-minute walk in, but an extended walking trail (Tarawera Outlet) is available. Lake Okataina: The views, the water, even the stunning drive you take down State Highway 30 to get there is worth it. Remote and a beautiful picnic spot, work up an appetite while you take a dip and savour the peaceful escape, surrounded by native bush right down to the water’s edge. Hamurana Springs: A family-orientated area in a peaceful and picturesque setting. Hamurana is famous for its crystal clear water and being the deepest natural fresh water spring in New Zealand. Walk through a unique Redwood grove, enjoy the birdlife, and don’t forget to check out the viewing platform. When your picnic is finished, you can return long the same track or use the footbridges to make a circuit. Rotorua Lakefront: Not so hidden and not so secret, this spot is a given for the top 5 as it has something for everyone; waterfront location, large children’s playground, plenty to watch as you picnic, pedal boats, and plenty of ducks and swans to feed.

1174 Whakaue Street, Rotorua Opposite Novotel, Lake end Tutanekai St Ph: 07 343 9239 Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 7.30 am till 4 pm

Lake Tikitapu: Picture perfect. On a beautiful sunny day, the site of this lake is breath-taking. In summer, this spot is busy because the lake is popular for watersports. Another familyfriendly picnic spot, this is a great choice because it’s all about fun, with a large reserve, BBQ facilities and toilets. Relax lakeside, go for a swim, and the Top 10 Holiday Park is right there as well – which means an ice cream and a coffee are never too far away.

hangi THE TASTE OF TRADITION

Around half the population of Rotorua is Maori (of 53,000) and there are 35 marae (meeting grounds) in the area. Traditional Maori food (hangi) cooked in an earth oven and a cultural performance are a popular way to experience Maori culture. Hangi (‘earth oven’) is the traditional Maori cooking method used for hundreds of years and is still used today. Laying a hangi involves digging a pit in the ground and heating stones in the pit with a large fire. The stones used must be able to withstand high heat without chipping or crumbling. For this reason, volcanic rocks are better.

Our Bar … Your Bar

Baskets of food are then placed on top of the stones and covered with wet cloths/ sheets, which are then covered with dirt/earth. The water in the cloths turns into steam when heated and because the steam cannot escape; it heats and cooks the food. There is a lot of preparatory work involved in a hangi, it is very labour intensive and involves skill and planning. Typically, the food used is a selection of lamb, chicken, pork, beef, shellfish, kumara [sweet potato], potato, corn and pumpkin. Cooking time takes approximately 7 hours. The overall result is rich, succulent food with a flavour quite unlike anything else. Well worth the wait and well worth experiencing during your time in Rotorua.

Follow in the footsteps of legions of visitors drawn to experience Waitomo’s magical limestone landscape. This major attraction has been the centre of caving tourism since 1889 when Maori first lead visitors through the caves to mar vel at the luminescent light radiating from thousands of beautiful tiny glow worms, Arachnocampa luminosa, unique to New Zealand. The Waitomo Caves were first explored in 1887, though long known to Maori. Their name derives from wai (water) and tomo (hole). The many limestone caves formed 30 million years ago when the area was under the sea. Cracks and weaknesses from geological and volcanic activity allowed water to seep through to create stunning cave formations, stalactites and stalagmites.

New Zealand flavours run through our menu with inspiration and ingredients locally sourced wherever possible. From lunch through to dinner we offer a natural and healthy selection that appeals to a wide range of tastes. Open 7 days from 11am till late

HOT SPRINGS

Visitors and volcanologists are drawn to the fascination of the spectacular lunar landscape that is White Island, known to Maori as Whakaari, ‘to make visible’.

The perfect place from which to explore the Eastern Bay of Plenty

At the northern end of the Taupo Volcanic zone, lies New Zealand’s most continuously active volcano and private scenic reserve, an uninhabited island rising from the South Pacific Ocean only 48 kilometres from the Bay of Plenty coast.

www.awakerisprings.co.nz

An active stratovolcano for at least 150,000 years, White Island is truly one of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth. To protect its birdlife and the pristine condition of this wonderland, White Island was declared a private scenic reserve in 1953, only accessible for guided tours by boat or scenic flights. From the air, White Island is an impressive sight rising from the ocean. What you see as you approach is literally the ‘tip of the iceberg’ as 70 percent of this massive volcanic structure lies under the sea. Above sea level, the main crater makes up most of the island, reaching 321 metres high. White steam hovering over the island is a reminder of constant low-level volcanic activity. The waters around the island are abundant with sea and birdlife. Renowned for multiday game fishing, and as one of New Zealand’s best dive sites with amazing visibility and underwater steam vents.

volcanic adventure Two unique islands of impressive and wonderful landscapes - the Bay of Plenty’s very own Beauty and the Beast. Sitting off Whakatane’s coast are two very different islands, both remarkable natural environments – Moutohorā (Whale) Island, a verdant wildlife paradise swathed in green, and White Island, a brooding, feisty marine volcano. Wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā Island is a conservation story testament to over 30 years of work by the Department of Conservation, local iwi and volunteers. The once barren, pest-infested island now regenerated with native trees and plants, such as pohutakawa, kanuka and kawakawa. Restricted access to visitors (only by approved guided tours) has allowed many birds and animals not usually seen on the mainland to flourish. The saddleback bird with its cheeky chatter is a major success story. Kiwis have also been introduced with evidence of their beach fossicking easily seen in the sand. The remaining vestiges of an ancient volcano includes a hot water beach where visitors can dig their own pool and soak or paddle among beautiful surroundings before returning to Whakatane.

WITH

In contrast, White Island is a largely barren, rocky volcano rising from the deep ocean floor. Steam is often visible even 50km away on the mainland. After an 80 minute boat trip, the looming island greets visitors with the distinctive smell of sulphur, often accompanied by the sound of roaring fumeroles. Hard hats and gas masks are issued before visitors explore, each small group accompanied by two guides to cross the crater floor and see the island’s spectacular sights such as yellow sulphur chimneys, roaring fumeroles and the main active crater. Visitors can also explore the skeletal remains of the old sulphur-mining factory and hear some intriguing stories about the miners who lived in this unforgiving place. Then return to the boat for a swim and a packed lunch before the journey back, while watching pods of dolphins and sometimes the odd whale. Daily tours to White Island and Moutohorā Island are subject to weather and sea conditions. Bookings are essential as the departure time varies.
