Taupo Not just a great big lake. This is the North Island’s volcanic heart and ultimate playground.

Home to New Zealand’s largest fresh water lake, volcanic wonderlands and the famous Huka Falls, Great Lake Taupo is truly blessed with world-class natural attractions, and is an all-seasons destination offering the perfect blend of leisure and adventure.

W

elcome to the North Island’s volcanic heart, a vast natural paradise we call Great Lake Taupo (’toe-paw’). Locals regard Taupo as the centre of everything, their passion for this town is undeniable. At the geographic centre of the North Island, nothing is too far away, making Taupo the perfect hub for your holiday. The district is an area of sublime natural beauty and diversity as it sits amidst clean green countryside, spectacular mountain scenery, beautiful native bush and some of the largest pine forests in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s no wonder visitors consider Taupo to be the ultimate adventure playground and it’s no surprise that they keep coming back. SHAKY PAST Great Lake Taupo is also located in one of the most active geothermal and volcanic regions in the world, with the most recent activity occurring in 2014 from Mt Tongariro. Lake Taupo sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting 300,000 years ago. The caldera formed from a collapse during the Oruanui eruption 27,000 years ago, which threw out 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice – making Krakatoa (eight cubic kilometres) look like a pimple. The Oruanui eruption was followed by another (the Taupo eruption) just 1,800 years ago, one of the largest ever recorded in the world. It felled great forests, burned trees 30 kilometres away and covered 20,000 square kilometres with pumice. Recorded as far away as Rome and China, records tell of the sun in the east being blood-red, lacking in light and giving the appearance of the heavens being ablaze. The eruption was so huge that ash has been found in ice cores drilled in Greenland. Dotted around the lake’s shores are beautiful bays and townships that offer their own unique flavour to visitors from

all walks of life, adding to your stay in the region. From the main township of Taupo at the north east tip of the lake, you can follow the lake around to the west and enjoy Acacia Bay, Kinloch, and take in the captivating beauty of the Western Bays. Venture southwards to savour another realm of rewarding adventures at the southern lake, which includes the township of Turangi. Today, the region is still renowned as a trout fishing capital. You can experience some of the best angling in New Zealand for rainbow and brown trout. You can fish in the lake, its two major rivers (Tongariro and Waikato) or the many tributaries. The lake and rivers are also very popular for a variety of winter and summer water sports, including kayaking, sailing, water skiing, jet boating, parasailing and rafting. THE GREAT OUTDOORS The neighbouring countryside and untouched forests provide the perfect environment for hiking and mountain biking, and for the more adventurous, an array of adrenaline-pumping experiences are at your doorstep. Experience the world’s only geothermally heated prawn farm, walk on lunar landscapes or helicopter over crater lakes. In winter, the region comes to life as an ideal base for the ski season. Just a short drive from the ski fields, local operators can arrange transport, ski and snowboard hire, as well as instruction to make your visit to the snow memorable. Though synonymous with adventure, sports, events and winter snow activities, on a quieter note, the region is the ideal location for those wanting to unwind and relax. Enjoy a round of golf, a cruise around Lake Taupo’s scenic bays, explore the delta wetlands or take a leisurely stroll immersing yourself in Taupo’s rich café culture. Definitely a playground for maximum fun and to ignite your senses!

16

We swim in it, we play on it, and it’s the size of Singapore. The stunning Great Lake Taupo is a volcanic crater with that owes its beauty to a very violent and traumatic history. The Oruanui Eruption created the volcanic basin approximately 27,000 years ago. The eruption has been remarked as the most violent eruption history has ever recorded – with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8 (which is the highest the index goes to, described as mega-colossal). 430km3 of ash and deposit was generated from the eruption, with fragments covering much of the Central North Island, fiery rock dust clouds up to 200m deep! The ashfall was immense, with an 18cm ash layer as far as the Chatham Islands (1,000km away). Māori legend states that the Oruanui eruption sent so much ash into the atmosphere that the sun was blocked across the entire world for two weeks. Then, in approximately 181 / 186 AD another eruption (the Hatepe or Taupō Eruption) occurred – smaller in comparison to Oruanui (7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index), ejecting 120km 3 of which a third was ejected in the space of a few minutes. This makes it one of the most violent eruptions in the last 5,000 years and it is the eruption responsible for shape of the modern caldera. It was recorded that ash from the eruption has been found in ice cores drilled in Greenland and Antarctica, and at the time of the eruption, Ancient Romans and Chinese experienced dark red skies from the fallout.

NEW Discovery Centre opening early 2017

There are so many ways to enjoy the largest lake in New Zealand, but no visit to Taupo is complete without exploration into the beautiful bays of Lake Taupo by boat. The best place to start is a visit to Taupo Boat Harbour, situated right in the heart of the town centre, at the mouth of the Waikato River. At the end of Ferry Road (off Lake Terrace) discover a raft of fishing, cruising and watersport busineses ready to show you what Lake Taupo is all about. You can charter your own boat to visit more exclusive spots, or relax with a cruise boat operator to show you the top tourist attractions, such as the magnificent Maori Rock Carvings in Mine Bay. One of New Zealand’s must see visitor attractions, you can only access the carvings by fishing, cruise and kayak tours. Let the professionals take you up close for that perfect shot. It is also a great spot for a swim! Since the 1880s when trout were first introduced to Lake Taupo, people have never tired of fishing the lake and its tributary rivers and streams for a legendary rainbow or brown trout. Renowned for its fly-fishing, the area boasts some of the finest rivers in New Zealand. But seeing Lake Taupo is not enough, you have to catch a piece of Lake Taupo before you leave. For the complete experience, there’s nothing better than chartering a boat, relaxing on board in the sunshine with a wine and catching your very own trout, it is after all the only way you can try it. Your skipper might even BBQ your catch for you while you’re out on the water, recounting local knowledge and history of the lake, and a few fishy tales along the way.

Please Note opening times and price’s can change without notice.

Orakei Korako is aguably the best thermal area left in New Zealand - Lonely Planet Guide

Mt Tauhara is a beautifully rustic bush walk with birdsong and a summit of rewarding views and photo opportunities. Trustees of this culturally significant landmark have generously opened up access to walkers and they hope that all who enjoy it, also care for it, during their time on the mountain. The carpark sits at the end of Mountain Road off SH5 (to Napier). It can be a challenging track as you are walking through natural native bush rather than perfectly manicured walking trails. The first stage of the walk crosses an operational farm. The track is clearly marked however. Depending on your fitness level, allow 1.52hrs to complete. It’s usually a slow climb up, a scenic rest at the top, and a much faster trip back down! Pack plenty of water. Once you are at the top, there is a narrow trail that takes you across the top of the mountain, out to a rocky area where you can sit and take in the panoramic views of Lake Taupo. This is where you can grab that magic photograph.

Maori legend tells the following of Mt Tauhara; The warrior mountains of Taranaki (Mt Egmont), Putauaki (Mt Edgecumbe), Tongariro and Tauhara were deeply in love with Pihanga, the mountain that stands above Turangi at the southern end of Lake Taupo. A battle erupted between the mountains to win Pihanga’s affections and the victor was Tongariro. Defeated, the other mountains were to retreat and travel as far as they could by dawn. Overnight, Taranaki fled west, Putauaki and Tauhara fled north. Putauaki moved fast and today stands in Kawerau. Tauhara was so saddened, he traveled reluctantly with a heavy heart always looking back. By dawn he had only made it to the north eastern shore of Lake Taupo.

huka falls New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction and a must see during your stay in Taupo!

The Huka Falls is an impressive set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo. Named from the Maori word huka, meaning ‘foam’, they are a visual feast of power and you can find them situated in Wairakei Tourist Park. WHAT CAUSES THE FALLS? The Waikato River, normally up to 100 metres wide, narrows to just 15 metres, which is what causes more than 220,000 litres of water to thunder through and over the 11-metre-high waterfall into the frothing blue-green pool below… enough water to fill one Olympic sized swimming pool Stunning in 11 seconds!

created and about Mighty River Power’s role in regulating the flow rate. VIEWING THE FALLS Make sure you give yourself plenty of time so you don’t have to rush this experience because there are so many viewing points to choose from, each one providing a great photo opportunity. Admire the falls from many different angles; the main bridge, either side of the river... just make sure you’ve got a selfie stick! Access across the main bridge and to the various lookout spots is very user friendly.

views, amazing pristine water, love seeing them every visit.

It’s not the highest waterfall by any means (the main fall just over 6 metres), but the sheer volume and speed at which the Waikato River forces its way through the narrow chasm is what makes Huka Falls an absolute spectacle. The roar of the water is ironically calming and the beautiful, riverside setting is quite tranquil.

The Huka Falls Visitor Kiosk offers even more information on how the falls were

igneous rock TAUPO’S BEAUTY SECRET!

You’ll notice Lake Taupo shores are riddled with pumice stones. Pumice is an igneous rock common to volcanic regions and is extraordinarily light and 90% porous. It is widely used as an abrasive in cosmetic exfoliates and in salons during the pedicure process to remove dry and excess skin from the bottom of the foot and smooth away roughness and calluses, leaving your feet feeling revived and ready for another day. To use at home, prepare your feet by soaking them in warm soapy water, or use an oil in the water to help soften the skin. Pat dry, then in a circulation motion, use the pumice stone to work on any dry, rough and callused areas. Finish off by moisturising your feet. Doing this one to three times per week will keep your feet feeling beautiful and silky smooth throughout the year.

So when you set out for your walk along Taupo’s lakefront, pick up a piece of pumice and try it for yourself, the results are guaranteed! But did you know the many other uses for pumice? Hair Removal; though a slow process, using pumice stone on moistened, soapy skin in a smooth circulation motion will slowly reduce and thin hair growth. Not recommended for delicate areas (face or bikini line), but suitable for arms, shoulders and legs. Fashion; to get that distressed look on your jeans, rub the pumice stone on the area you want until you get the level of wear you are looking for. Gardening; as pumice is highly porous, it is excellent for aeration and drainage. It is great for conditioning soil, great for layering at the bottom of pots, and perfect for turf management (parks, sports fields, golf courses).

healing waters A LONG TRADITION

Maori have a long tradition of natural holistic health practices that are now being received by a worldwide culture interested in health, wellness and natural medicine.

Q U A LI T Y F U R N I T U R E 35

A century ago, the bubbling and steaming lands of Waiora Valley were a major visitor attraction for the Taupo area. Travellers worldwide came by train, by horse or stagecoach, to soak in the therapeutic pools and streams, or to simply marvel at the boiling earth, coloured silica’s and bright green ferns and mosses. Descriptive writings by early explorers who travelled to the area at the turn of the last century, tell of a place so remarkable that at first sight it appeared to be artificially designed by man’s hand. This previously forbidden land of terraces, geysers, springs and mud holes, with its growth of varied vegetation, its rich beauty of ferns, its rare and beautiful mosses and its luxuriant trees, were described to the outside world as a natural phenomenon unlikely to be found anywhere else. es rrac i Te irake a W I

The little shop with everything.

Maori settled in this area around 1000 years ago. They believed that the hot pools and springs contained healing powers and qualities that aided the treatment of skin diseases and brought relief to people suffering arthritic and rheumatic ailments. The waters of the Te Kiri o Hinekai Stream were highly valued for therapeutic and smoothing effects. After having bathed in these waters, people would testify to feeling physically and spiritually cleansed and invigorated. Today, at Wairakei Terraces, visitors can enjoy the benefits of these waters again. Pools of varying temperatures have been strategically positioned below the silica terraces and waterfall, taking full advantage of the geothermal water flow that is drawn to the earth’s surface from 1.5km underground.

world famous AND NZ’S BEST 1 DAY TREK

As you venture into the country’s oldest National Park, you enter a contrasting wonderland of stark and stunning volcanic terrain.

51

The park, formed in 1887 when the three peaks were gifted to New Zealand by Paramount Ngati Tuwharetoa Chief, Te Heuheu Tukino IV, has a unique dual World Heritate status due to its Maori cultural signficance and the outstanding volcanic features. Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe are linked by a scenic, tussock covered countryside, crossed by some superb walking tracks, so it is no wonder the park is home to the best one day trek in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of the National Park’s special gifts; cold mountain springs, herb fields, lava flows, active craters, steam vents, emerald-coloured alpine lakes and spectacular views. It is definitely the dramatic scenery and unique land forms that contribute to the Crossing being a world renowned trek. Whether summer or winter, the views are unbeatable and the experience is unforgettable. The 19.4 kilometre one-way journey is a challenge and an adventure that should not be taken lightly. The climbs can be steep and the weather unpredictable. It is strongly advised that throughout the winter months, this trek is done with an experienced guide due to the extreme conditions. In the summer, the snow melts away and provides a much safer trek that you can do unguided. It is a full day hike, so be sure to wear the right clothing, suitable footwear and take plenty of water.

AND A BRIDGE TO NOWHERE

Whanganui National Park, New Zealand’s 11th National Park, offers many great attractions, with a selection of one to four day walking tracks, cycle trails and canoe trips. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts suiting thrill seekers and families.

The Whanganui River is the main gateway for people visiting the park and with the surrounding native forests it provides a stunning natural backdrop. This remote and verdant park includes one of the largest remaining tracts of intact lowland forest in the North Island. The park is one of majestic, changeable landscapes containing fast and slow running rivers, crystal clear waterfalls, deep gorges and fern clad banks, wide river flats and extensive wilderness areas, rich in native flora and fauna.

With few roads leading into the park, it is accessed mainly via the Whanganui River and the towns of Taumarunui, Whakahoro and Pipiriki. The river’s origin is high on Mt Tongariro starting as an alpine stream. It descends through the central volcanic plateau towards Taumarunui and then continues for 200km, winding through the Whanganui National Park to meet the Tasman Sea. It is the most navigable river in New Zealand (nearly 300 kilometres), and used to be known as the Rhine of the Southern Hemisphere. Also situated in the heart of park is the Bridge to Nowhere. This abandoned, iconic mid-1930s construction has become a major visitor destination. You can access the bridge via a 40 minute walk from the Mangapurua Landing on the Whanganui River (boat transport required up the river) or by the Mangapurua Track, accessible from either Whakahoro or Ruatiti road end.
