paradise Living in

– isn't it fantastic?

As the nights get shorter and the mercury drops slightly it’s starting to feel a lot more like the seasons are changing. We’ve had a great summer with something for everyone and a whole host of successful events. We welcomed talented international acts for the Taupo Summer Concert as well as up and coming Kiwi artists for the first ever Flochella floating gig. We’ve recently seen athletes from 49 countries converge on Taupō for the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand event and witnessed dozens of Formula One cars from the 1960s and 70s for the Taupō Historic GP. 6

Autumn is a beautiful season in Taupō. Along with snow gradually returning to the peaks of the Tongariro National Park, autumn brings the early spawning runs of both rainbow and brown trout through our rivers and sees the hue of foliage change to warm reds and oranges.

businesses, spending almost three per cent more than the same time in 2015.

Over the coming months we’ll be excitedly welcoming travelling DHL New Zealand Lions’ Series 2017 supporters through our district as well as snow bunnies making the most of an (hopefully!) early ski season.

We’ve got so much to offer here, it’s no wonder visitors keep coming back, and people are choosing to make Taupō their home.

Our visitors help support our local economy in a big way by shopping, eating, drinking and staying with local accommodation providers. It’s great news that spending in the Taupō District is up 7.1 per cent on the same time last year according to the latest Marketview research report. What’s also pleasing to see is it’s not only our visitors who are spending more, but locals are continuing to support local

We’re also seeing a steady increase in new homes being built in the Taupō District in the past 12 months with over $150 million of building work taking place – almost $40 million more than in 2015.

town centre party, music, entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy are just some of the exciting happenings to look forward to this June.

What's New? There are loads of new and exciting developments up on the mountain this year; snowmaking improvements, the Happy Valley Snow Park relaunch, new beginner trails higher up than before, and the Waterfall T-bar being replaced with a brand new quad express chairlift. 8

Happy Valley Snow Park is the place to come for your first snow experience, whether that’s learning to ski under the guidance of an experienced snow school instructor, or speeding down the slope on a sled. Even the kids will love the dedicated play zone, they’ll have their own covered surface lift away from the skiing and snowboarding public, so they’re safe while having fun in the snow. In a New Zealand first, Happy Valley Snow Park will have the only Techno Alpin SF210 All-Weather Snowmaking system in the country. This means they can

make snow in above-zero temperatures, and guarantee an opening for Queen’s Birthday long weekend, making it the first ski area to open in Australasia - perfect for those snow-lovers who start their winter countdown as soon as the season ends! Also, getting to Happy Valley will now be so much easier and faster, with no more uncomfortable chairlift! Ruapehu Alpine Lifts are adding two high speed Schindler elevators (fitting 26 people each) to take you from the carpark to the snow. The park will also feature 3 brand new surface lifts, of which 2 will be covered to keep you dry and sheltered. But that’s not all… now, you can night ski! Experience the night skiing options on Friday and Saturday nights where the Happy Valley Snow Park and Whakapapa lower mountain will also be buzzing with music, entertainment and food and beverages. Advanced riders will be able to enjoy new terrain park features too.

Connecting Mt Ruapehu + Taupō This year, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts are opening two new Mt Ruapehu shops in the Taupō town centre, offering ticketing, transport and rental services to those skiers staying in Taupo. And the best part, there will be a dedicated Taupō to Whakapapa shuttle transport service (with a Turangi i-SITE stop) departing daily a minimum of every 30 minutes. No more transport woes – sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning lakeside drive enroute to the mountain. The new Taupō–Ruapehu link presents a huge opportunity for our local businesses

A weekend of festivities On the 3rd of June, a month earlier than the start of the ski season, Mt Ruapehu will open their new ski area, with a grand opening held in both the Taupō and Happy Valley locations. Ruapheu Alpine Lifts are working closely with Towncentre Taupo, Destination Great Lake Taupō, and local businesses to bring you ‘Winter’ as you’ve never seen it before. The opening weekend will see families participate in an exciting opening party right in the town centre. In the same way, Happy Valley will also come alive to many more festivities for those who want to experience it at Whakapapa Skifield. It’s Autumn, which means we’re about to use our boats one last time for the next few months. Have you thought about starting to winterise your boat? Winter weather can wreak havoc if your boat is not prepared for hibernation.

W

hat is winterising? Basically, it means preparing your boat to continue functioning after staying idle during the Winter months. Though not an exhaustive list, make sure you’re ready to go at the start of Spring with these great suggestions.

Fill up your fuel tank

Photo: Ian Ashmore Photography

12

Since nearly all boat fuel tanks are vented to the atmosphere, water from

condensation can (and will) collect in your fuel. When the concentration of water molecules in your fuel tank reaches just 0.5%, the water molecules will sink to the bottom, where your fuel pick up is. Depending on the amount of water ingested into your outboard, this can result in everything from running problems to catastrophic damage.

Add a fuel stabiliser/conditioner Make sure to add a quality, marine-specific non-alcohol-based formula. These are specifically designed to work effectively in the moisture-rich environments common to boats.

Photo: Ian Ashmore Photography

WATERSPORTS & SAFETY GEAR Visit the Turangi & Lake Taupo Marine showroom Turangi Marine is located just off State Highway 1, Atirau Road, Turangi – only a hop, skip and jump from the lake. Their large showroom has a wide range of outboards, boats, boat packages, and all marine and watersports related accessories. They are boat dealers for

Buccaneer and Mac Hulls, and supply Yamaha outboards as the Turangi and Lake Taupo Outboard Dealer. For more information on their products and services pop in to the showroom, contact them on 07 386 8474 or visit www.turangimarine.co.nz.

Use a trickle battery charger to avoid battery/starting problems in Spring

Check your boat cover for any rips or tears

A trickle battery charger is useful because it’s designed to be left on the battery for a long period and recharge it by ‘trickling’ the power over time. It slowly charges the battery and doesn’t let it deplete as normal batteries do. There are many different types of chargers depending on your boat and battery, so ask for help if you’re not sure which one to use.

If your storage space is exposed to the Winter weather, check that your boat cover isn't ripped or damaged. You need to keep the water out, otherwise the condensation can lead to dry rot and mould.

Check your fuel connections and lines for any leaks Make sure you do the check now instead of waiting until Spring, weak connections can worsen over time, plus there’s the risk of condensation building up in an emptying fuel tank.

Secure your boat with a trailer lock Trailer locks are great for long term storage. Made from hardened steel, they are a simple deterrent against theft. Don't risk it – make sure you still have a boat after Winter.

Got any questions? The team at Turangi Marine are here to help you with anything, for any season.

FISH FINDER SYSTEMS BOATS AND COMPONENTS OILS AND FUEL OUTBOARDS SERVICES & PARTS FINANCE OPTIONS

Top tips for a happy boat Filter out the water

Keep it fresh

Install a fuel/water separating filter in the fuel line between your fuel tank and your outboard. It filters the gas and allows any water (which is heavier than gas) to safely sink to the bottom of the filter and out of the fuel.

Buy your gas where they sell a lot of it. The goal is to keep your boat’s fuel fresh and potent all the time. Why buy gas that’s already been sitting around untreated? Buy the freshest fuel you can find, and at fill up, treat each tank with a fuel stabiliser/conditioner. Add these before adding the fuel so they mix up well. It’s an easy, proactive and protective habit to get into.

Conquer the Crossing

By Deepika Sulekh

New to Taupo and eager to explore everything this town has to offer, I’m on a mission to create ‘the bucket list’ – adventures that are in our backyard for every local to enjoy, because why should visitors have all the fun?

Roam the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with us! OUR PROMISE

We leave no one behind. Enjoy New Zealand’s best one day hike. We are specialists based at Whakapapa Village in the Tongariro National Park providing shuttles to and from the Crossing.

fter speaking to a few locals, there’s no surprise that the first thing on my list is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Not only is it rated New Zealand’s best oneday trek but in 2015 alone, 125,000 visitors completed it – that’s a compelling figure to ignore. It must be good, right? The Crossing sits in a Dual World Heritage Site, the Tongariro National Park, with a strong cultural history and unique terrain. It’s been described to me in many ways, including “epic”, “stunning”, and “breath-taking (in more ways than one)”. After hearing all this, I was sold, buying the postcard simply won’t cut it, this is something I must see for myself; the active volcanic craters, old lava flows, thermal steam vents, emerald and blue lakes, and native forest.

That’s the why. What about the how, when and where? What are you in for? This is a 19.4 kilometre one way trek, which means a few things. It’s a big day and an early start. I’ve heard most like to get started around 7:30am to 8am and on average it can take six to eight hours to do. One way means you’re going to have to engage a local shuttle service; it starts at Mangatepopo Car Park and finishes at Ketetahi Car Park.

When should you do it? I’ve decided that Autumn could be one of the best times to conquer the Crossing. By avoiding Summer, I’m hoping for a drop in visitor numbers on the track as well as saving myself from potentially eight hours

of punishing sun and heat. As beautiful as snow is, Winter comes with more risks (especially for a novice like me) and I’m not keen on needing any specialist gear like crampons or having to go with a guided option. In Autumn, the weather is fairly settled and a little cooler – just how I need it.

Can you go solo? There are companies that will guide you, but it’s also perfectly safe and wellmarked to do this solo – so long as you’re prepared. I’ve heard doing it in a group can be a lot of fun, with plenty of camaraderie to keep you motivated. On the flip side, the location is so quiet and breath-taking, that if you like to be alone and are excited about getting away from noise, people, work, devices… this is ‘off the grid’ – the ultimate escape from life as you know it.

Some tips I’ve picked up: • It’s OK to do it alone, but let someone know, even if you’re using a shuttle service • Wear good footwear, flat skate shoes won’t cut it on these trails • Take plenty of water • The alpine environment means weather can be changeable, so wear layers • Don’t forget to charge your camera • Skip the first toilet, there is a second one with a shorter queue • Have a cold beer in the fridge for your return, then go soak in a hot pool

Poppy Day Taupo RSA Trust Inc

NZAC Day is a national day of commemoration observed on 25 April each year, honouring those who died serving New Zealand during war and returned and current servicemen and women. 25 April 1915 marks the day when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Gallipoli in Turkey, the site of New Zealand’s first major battle of World War One where we lost over 2,700 New Zealand soldiers. Some say this was when New Zealand first and truly forged its Nationhood. The ANZAC Day dawn service, first commemorated in 1916, is a moving commemoration and

every year thousands of Kiwis attend services in their local communities.

Why a Red Poppy? The red Poppy, or Flanders Poppy, was the first plant to emerge from the churned-up soil of the soldier’s graves and bombed fields of Northern France during the First World War. The Flanders Poppy was first immortalised as a symbol of worldwide remembrance in a poem by Lieutenant Colonel John McRae, a Canadian Medical Officer. Madame Guerin, a French woman, formed the idea of widows and orphans manufacturing artificial

poppies in Northern France, then to be sold for the benefit of veterans. Throughout 19201921, Madame Guerin and her representatives visited Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States with an appeal to adopt the Poppy as their national symbol of remembrance. They all did. In New Zealand, the Poppy was first used as this symbol in 1922. Unlike Britain, Australia and Canada, New Zealand didn’t hold its first Poppy Day Appeal on Armistice Day (11 November), rather it chose ANZAC Day 1922, establishing forever its association with our ANZAC Day. In 1931, the NZRSA began producing poppies in NZ and these were made by disabled returned servicemen in Auckland and Christchurch.

The RSA was formed in New Zealand in 1916 by returning ANZACs during World War One to provide support and comfort for service men and women and their families: www.rsa.org.nz

Poppy Day is usually the Friday before ANZAC Day, this year on 21 April 2017. Volunteers assist the local RSA in offering Poppies in exchange for a donation, which is used by the local RSA for welfare support to returned and ex-servicemen and women. In Taupō, the Taupo RSA Trust is the major provider of welfare support to returned and exservicemen and women. www.rsa.org.nz 17

The Ultimate Guide NZ is a travel app born in Taupo by a team who have been passionate about promoting this region for 20 years. In fact, 2017 marks their twentieth year in business.

Download T

he Ultimate Guide NZ app was created by family business ninetyblack, a graphic design, web and advertising/publishing company. Matt Lee, who project managed the app into creation, shares “we are experts in our field and have been in service for 20 years, helping businesses be better through our design, web, and advertising solutions. My role here is to help drive us another 20”. With the businesses history of producing printed visitor guides and maps, General Manager Jo Lee is in no doubt, that print in this industry will never die. “Visitors to this region still love picking up something tangible and discovering for themselves all that they can see and do during their

18

visit”. However, with the landscape quickly and forever changing, ninetyblack identified that with the large number of domestic travellers becoming more and more device prone, they had to look at the bigger picture. The app is an extension of the Ultimate Guide magazine, a destination guide that goes into every motel room in the Central Plateau, including Rotorua, Whakatane and Waitomo. The magazine has been

The aim was to deliver an app that fasttracked the visitor’s research time. It’s all right there.” That means the app doesn’t just deliver content on local tourist activities, operators and attractions. Have you moved to Raw Milk? Raw milk is real milk. Coming from pasture-fed cows, it contains all the fat and has not been processed in any way.

R

aw milk is full of wholesome goodness and is delicious and creamy, not sweet like pasteurised milk – you can taste and tell that you’re drinking quality. Aside from the great taste, it’s nutritious and in its natural state, so your body can better absorb the nutrients. Our ecological farming means we can minimise those pesticides and chemical fertilisers to give you milk as it should be - real. Instead we farm more naturally with lime, mixed grasses and herb and soil friendlier fertilisers. We cool the milk down to 4°C, harvest it in a hygienic way and put it up for sale in our shop with a milk dispenser and glass bottle dispenser. Raw milk is one of the best sources of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. Pasteurisation

often changes key elements in milk and can reduce the nutrients provided to your body. Raw milk keeps in delicate balance between minerals and vitamins A, C, D, E and K are all found in raw milk. Our customers are seeing great health benefits; skin eczema is disappearing, the lactose intolerant are now drinking raw milk, and people have much stronger immune systems.

Is our milk safe to drink? Properly produced and handled raw milk is extremely low-risk. You must remember that any food can be contaminated. It usually boils down to how it was produced and handled. Correct cleaning procedures and hygiene in the dairy shed is very important to us and we take our time to ensure this is done thoroughly.

At each milking; • the cow's udder is carefully cleaned • a small amount of milk is hand stripped out of each quarter for a visual check • somatic cell counts are checked.

Milk samples are regularly sent to the laboratory for testing every ten days and a tested for Somatic Cell Counts, Coliforms, Aerobic Plate Count, E-Coli, Staphylococcus, Listeria, Inhibitory substances, Campylobacter, and Salmonella. Some people may need to exercise caution in drinking raw milk, including young babies, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems, such as people with cancer, an organ transplant or HIV/AIDS. To reduce the risk of illness, raw milk should be heated to at least 70°C for 15 seconds before consuming.

Where can you find us? Come and visit Taupo Raw Milk at 254 Oruanui Rd, RD 4, where we have our milk and bottle dispensers. To make drinking raw milk even easier, try the convenience of our weekly home delivery service. Contact us on 07 378 8384, email tauporawmilk@slingshot.co.nz or visit www.tauporawmilk.co.nz. 20

Health & Safety at Work By Deepika Sulekh

Do you understand the new health and safety legislation, your new responsibilities and what this means for your business? Over half of local businesses audited are found non-compliant. One year on from the changes, it’s safe to say that doing nothing is not an option.

knowledge, training and experience they need to work safely? If not, supervise them and make sure they are trained. 5. Track Events: Record, investigate and report all workplace incidents and injuries, and prevent them for the future.

H

Are you complying?

ealth and safety is important regardless of your job, workplace or industry. Whether you work in an office, restaurant, motel, retail or anywhere else, health and safety risks are potentially everywhere, whether it’s from working with computers, machinery, from fatigue or even stress. The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 is only a start for the changes that need to happen in our workplaces, and now everyone at work has a role ensuring health and safety at work is a priority.

Key changes • A PCBU (person conducting business or undertaking) has the ‘primary duty of care’ to ensure the safety of workers and anyone affected by it. • A stronger emphasis on worker participation, ensuring that workers are engaged in health and safety. • Focus on proactively identifying and managing risks instead of just hazard control. • All workers are now responsible for health and safety. If you’re not sure of your duties, then ask. 22

• Directors and executives have more legal responsibility to manage risks and keep people safe. And no one knows your business better than you do, so understand the risks relevant to you. • Stronger fines and penalties now exist for any offences, with a new hierarchy being introduced and other offending provisions.

What does it mean to be compliant? The following systems are recommended as a minimum to have as a checklist: 1. Current process: Make sure you have a health and safety system in place that is reviewed regularly and communicated to everyone. 2. Worker engagement: Get your workers engaged in everything health and safety and provide opportunities to help them improve it, e.g. select health and safety reps, set up a committee, have regular meetings, etc. 3. Risk management: Ensure you’ve got a process to identify hazards, assess the risk, and control and monitor them. 4. Competency: Do your staff have the

Now, the obligation is on you to show that you’re doing it right. The new officer (‘verifier’) from Taupo District Council works with businesses to determine what you actually know and do to ensure health and safety and compliance with the law. If you’re not able to show this, then extra visits are required which leads to higher compliance costs for your business. In many cases, there is often little or no knowledge or attempt to implement the recommended systems. And just winging it on the day no longer applies. You need a concerted effort throughout the year. However, those that do apply the new systems, find that it is quite easy to meet.

Help is available If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure or avoiding thinking about it, there are businesses that can help you with compliance, such as providing health and safety onsite audits, guidance, packs and systems to make your workplace safe for everyone.

Getting a Buzz out of Bookkeeping By Vicki Beker

GENER A L M A N AGER , BFA

B

ookkeeping can sound old fashioned, but this is far from the truth. In fact, there are a lot of great reasons why businesses should get a buzz out of bookkeeping. ‘The cloud’, has given businesses access to simple and affordable technology enabling easy, efficient and effective payroll and record keeping. You can do your bookwork anywhere, in the comfort of your own home or even on a beach. However, bookwork can be time consuming and stressful. Payroll, staffing issues, paper work, invoicing and chasing customer accounts. It’s the last thing you want to do at the end of the day. It’s just as important to get information into your financial systems fast and with no errors. Imagine your staff completing timesheets and adding costs to jobs via their cell phones as they do the work.

So ask yourself: • • • • •

24

Do I want to make my life easier? Do I want less stress and more success? Am I keeping up with my competitors? Do I want more family time? Do I really have to do this work?

Most people can say YES to at least one of these questions. So what can you do?

Implement new systems If you have existing capable staff, get advice on what systems would best suit your business. Different solutions fit different businesses but start looking at Xero, MYOB, Receipt Bank, Debtor Daddy, Builder Trend, Tradify, Simpro, IPayroll, Enable HR etc. There are now over 500 cloud based solutions. Sounds amazing, but it’s also caused confusion on which one is best to use.

Upskill yourself If you have systems you are not fully utilising or haven’t had the right training to use them, upskill yourself. Talk to a professional or your system provider to find out how you can learn more about your current system. You may also have the option to ‘add-on’ to what you currently have.

Consider Outsourcing Work out the real cost of yourself or a staff member doing the payroll and bookkeeping. Get a price from an expert, who can take away the stress, and not to mention save you time and money. They are also qualified in Employment Legislation, GST and Tax. So don’t wait. Get stuck in and find out how bookkeeping in the cloud can help you manage your business and your life with ease.

Business Advisors and Accountants that take your life’s work seriously Too many businesses fall short of their real potential. We will drive change together to help you live up to that potential.

The Resource Consent Process: Five key elements to success By Catriona Eagles

SENIOR PL A NNER , CHE A L CONSULTA NTS LTD

W

hether it’s to build the home of your dreams, or to subdivide parcels of land for development, you will probably come across the resource management process at least once in your life. But do you know the best way to manage this process? In our experience, five key elements are fundamental to achieving a successful outcome.

1. Seek Professional Advice: Just like any new (ad)venture, appreciate that you may be entering the unknown. The worst approach is to assume that obtaining a resource consent is straightforward. Seek assistance from those who deal with this process every day. 2. Inform: Provide the Council with good quality information. This enables a more constructive process. 3. Plan: Take time initially to plan your approach and investigate potential issues to ensure the right work is being undertaken by the right service provider, in the right order. If you obtain the consent based on conceptual information with detailed engineering design following, you can avoid the higher level of work and

associated lost investment if the resource consent is not granted, or granted on a reduced scale. Why risk a great deal of time and money by not being aware of the issues and frameworks at the beginning?

4. Engage: Building a constructive relationship with Council helps in the process. You may be able to determine points of agreement or disagreement and confirm the details of any technical assessments. For example, rather than undertaking a full Traffic Impact Assessment for a proposal, the Council may agree that a simple analysis of peak traffic periods will suffice. There is a wealth of knowledge there and assistance can be available if you are open to receiving it. 5. Be Clear: It’s all about investing in steps towards certainty. If done properly and strategically, this will focus the issues, manage time and cost and provide greater confidence, placing you in the best place to navigate the process. Think about seeking professional assistance to ensure your project is run strategically, establishing a constructive relationship with the Council early whilst working toward your desired outcome.

Fall in Love with Taupō this Autumn It’s easy to take what we have for granted, so let Autumn be the season you fall in love with Taupo again – whether you need ideas for the upcoming school holidays, you’re hosting visitors, or you just need to get out of the house.

A

s Autumn’s cooler temperatures arrive, the visitor crowd thins and we have Taupo all to ourselves again. As the summer buzz fades, Autumn swoops in with a more tranquil, laid back charm – and there is still plenty to do and enjoy.

Catch a trout Have you done this yet? Did you know that Taupo’s world-famous trout are at their biggest size in Autumn? Plus, the waters

30

are much emptier now, except for the few locals who know the secret spots. If you’re new to the game, we recommend a flyfishing guide. They’ll know all the great spots where you can catch that trout. There’s also fishing charters and boat hire options, great for fishing fun with friends, family or colleagues.

Soak those bones Taupo boasts many hot pools, loved by both locals and visitors. Thanks to the geothermal activity happening underground, our pools are naturally heated. One of the most popular (and free) hot spots is the Otumuheke Stream at Spa Park, a great place to take a break and soak away in the shallow pools, get a soft massage under the waterfall or enjoy a riverside picnic with the family.

School holiday blues If you’re having to entertain your little ones during the school holidays, did you know the Taupo Library has a holiday programme? If the weather isn’t playing ball, a trip to the library is a great respite for Mums and great fun for the kids, with changing activities each day. Best of all, it’s free. Outside of the school holidays, go in every Wednesday at 10.30am for ‘Toddler Time’, with stories, rhymes, crafts, songs and fun to keep your little ones entertained.

Beat the feet Midday temperatures are down, so now’s a great time to discover Taupo’s many walkways, boasting natural beauty and spectacular views. Whether it’s your daily lakeside walk, you want to try something different, or even challenge yourself, ‘push play’ this Autumn and stay active. These are our top picks to get you started: • The Great Lake Walkway • Spa Park to Huka Falls • Mt Tauhara • Tongariro River Trail • Lake Rotopounamu • Waihora Lagoon

On Site Hits the Spot By Deepika Sulekh

Vintage and quirky – that’s how I’d describe On Site Coffee. Serving the hub of Taupō’s industrial area, Melissa May’s goal is simple: quality coffee, fast.

H

aving a prime location and loads of parking space (a handy tradies’ stop over), makes it easy to grab that quick fix while on the go. No need to wait in long lines or among crowded cafés anymore. Being a local girl, with a love for coffee-making, 15 years of hospitality experience, and support from her family, Melissa found the perfect opportunity. Taking advantage of the gap in the market for good coffee in the area and the chance to have her own business, Melissa opened On Site Coffee in January this year.

More than just a caffeine hit Quality coffee and making the perfect brew is top priority, which is why Melissa

uses Coffee Supreme, a unique blend, medium dark roasted with an intense richness and complexity. You can even choose single origin beans if you’re in the mood for a different taste. And not just the coffee beans, whether it’s sweetened with organic coconut sugar or flavoured with a spicy chai syrup, everything at On Site has its own unique, and sometimes quirky flavour. Of course, I’ll take biscuits with that too. Baked by local suppliers with love, you’ll find a range of your favourite homemade baking – from gingernuts to Anzac cookies. And did I mention the lollies? All our kiwi favourites – milkshakes, gummy bears, milk bottles and more… what’s not to love?

But wait, there’s more Melissa’s not just stopping there. The current coffee bar now has an office upstairs with a conference room available for hire, perfect for small corporate events and functions for up to 8 people. And up next is a new location at the Taupō Airport, providing quality, on-thego coffee to the travellers too, soon with catering additions to both coffee bars.

Whole coffee beans or custom ground for your needs On Site Coffee also sells coffee in 250g, 500g and 1kg bags. Whether you just want the beans or specifically want them ground for your machine at home, On Site Coffee have a specialty Swiss Retail Grinder that can customgrind your beans for you – to any consistency you need. Now also delivering to local businesses or offices if you want to pre-order.

Go and try an On Site coffee Located at 19a Miro Street, On Site also provides a text-order service: Simply text your order to 021 026 17409 and pop in to pick it up. Easy!

Clean Eating 101: Don’t get scared, get started Clean eating, the latest buzz word that we’re hearing from the health conscious, diet and fitness circles, cookbooks, and now your Instagram feed. The clean eating trend is everywhere, it’s not a diet, but a new lifestyle.

S

imply put, clean eating is all about eating whole or real foods, minimally processed or refined, and as natural as possible, i.e. the best and healthiest of all the food groups. It’s easy to follow and refreshes your habits, improves your health, immune system and lifestyle overall. At the same time helping the planet stay green and reducing your carbon footprint.

But how do you do it? Here’s our tips on how to eat clean: Cut down on the processed stuff Look at the ingredients list on packaged foods, if it’s long and has things you don’t

know of, then avoid it. A lot of processed foods are full of excess salt, sugars and fats. Try buying cleaner and organic ingredients and making your own meals from scratch.

More fruit & veggies They’re unprocessed, full of vitamins, and beneficial for vision, immunity and bones. They’re also high in fibre and low in calories. One of the best ways to clean eat is to fill your diet with loads of these.

Stay within the limits (one drink for women and two for men, per day). Too much alcohol is dehydrating and adds calories, no matter how great it might taste or make you feel!

Choose whole grains

Beware of the sweets

Whole grains have a higher concentration of vitamins, minerals and nutrients than refined grains. For example, when looking for bread or rice, look for ‘whole wheat’ or ‘whole grains’.

That means fizzy drinks, lollies and many baked foods. Look for sugar in the ingredients list, and if it’s close to the bottom, that means less of it is used. Alternatively, try using natural sweeteners like stevia, raw honey, maple sugar flakes or date sugar.

Ditch those burgers That means less saturated fats. Don’t scratch the fats completely, just go easy on them. Swap out butter, cheese and meat for olive oil, sunflower oil, nuts and fish. These are good for your heart and lung functions. 34

Watch the booze

Put down the salt shaker The recommended amount is one teaspoon per day, more than that can increase your blood pressure. A better alternative: add flavour with herbs and spices.

aupō has enchanted many brides and grooms in the past, captivated by the lake and its surroundings, making it their special place forever.

Picturesque locations As you travel around different parts of Taupō or even the lake, the landscape varies, so you have a choice of different backdrops, whether it’s the beachy lakefront or the snow-capped mountains. No matter what style of wedding you’re planning, Taupō has choices for a beautiful setting in any season. Want to know the real gems? It’s in our nature; the riversides, the unseen bays, the natural bush, the scenic mountain tops… hidden spots you can get to by boat, helicopter or even floatplane. The opportunities are endless and locations breathtaking, just imagine the photos! “Taupō has everything for the bold and the beautiful, the timid and the brave, the prince and the pauper, the young and the not so young. If you can picture it, Taupō will have it, and in easy reach too.” — Belinda, The Wedding Angel

Assorted wedding venues Couples in Taupō are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a wedding 36

Taupō’s central location also makes it easy for guests who are coming from different parts of the country. “Taupō is ideally situated and easily reached by anywhere in the country. Because of the ease of driving without major traffic delays and the laidback atmosphere, guests and the bridal party tend to be more relaxed and have an enjoyable experience.” — Diane, Millenium Hotel

Plenty of accommodation and activities for your guests Your guests can choose from our many motels, lodges, bed and breakfasts, hotels, or holiday homes. Plus, there’s plenty for them to see and do on their stay here.

“Taupō is perfect not just for the bride and groom, but for the guests too. Once they are here and in party mood, the sky’s the limit, literally! Since it is the sky-diving capital of New Zealand, and an adventure tourism mecca.” — Belinda, The Wedding Angel

TAUPO VISION CARE RJ GORDON OP TOME TRISTS

Innovative Eye Care For 30 years, Ross Gordon Optometrists have embraced new knowledge and technology providing the Taupō community with the most up to date eye care available in Optometry.

R

etinal Photography, Corneal Topography, Visual Field analysis, Therapeutic Optometry, Behavioural assessment and many other examination techniques have made Ross Gordon Optometrists one of the leading Optometry practices in New Zealand. This approach still exists and in 2017 Ross continues to provide technology and services which are unique to this Practice. Taupo Vision Care was one of the first Optometry Practices in New Zealand to introduce OCT scanning. The scope of these scanners to detect and monitor eye disease has been so significant that this machine has now been updated to the latest Generation of OCT scanners. OCT scanning has revolutionised Optometry. Information from OCT

scanning for Macular Degeneration and glaucoma is complex and requires experienced interpretation. One of several services available only at Taupo Vision Care, OCT scanning is essential in diagnosing and treating Macular Degeneration and is rapidly becoming the Gold Standard in treating and monitoring Glaucoma. The retina has ten layers of cells and these scanners are able to examine all ten layers, measuring to within 3 microns, monitoring for change due to aging and disease. Ross and Catherine will discuss results with you in order that you have a clear understanding of your eye health and what if any action is required to be undertaken. In 2016 we were delighted to welcome Catherine Gavin to the Practice. Catherine graduated B.Optom (Hons) in 2009 from Auckland University. She brings with her an exuberance and passion for Optometry and is enjoying being part of a Practice that has available up to date technology which provides support for diagnosis and treatment of eye disease.

Your eyes are important to us A consultation with Ross or Catherine will take at least 45 minutes. Whilst we carry a wide range of spectical frames, many ranges exclusive to us, and can access a vast array of lenses suitable for your needs, your eye health is very important to us. We dispense spectacles and contact lenses, but only if you really need them.

WE TAKE YOUR EYE CARE SERIOUSLY We offer a unique set of services using high tech equipment. 
