make the ski fields more accessible than ever before, with the added bonus of an early opening day (a whole month earlier!) meaning a longer ski season.
For some people, winter is a time when they think of short days and colder climes. But here in the Taupō District, we’re lucky there’s so much to look forward to in the middle of each year. By now you will have heard about the $100 million investment Ruapehu Alpine Lifts is putting into Whakapapa Ski Area to turn Mt Ruapehu into New Zealand’s mountain of choice. New infrastructure, state-of-the-art snowmaking facilities and shuttles from Taupō to the mountain will 6
Taupō and Turangi are the ultimate places for visitors to base themselves for a snow holiday, with an amazing array of off-mountain activities for those days when they need a break from the mountain. We’ve got everything - from a multitude of adrenalin activities to keep the blood pumping to soothing hot mineral pools to relax in, and everything in between. As well as getting excited about the ski season, we’re also looking forward to the second annual Malcolm Flowers Insurances Taupō Winter Festival kicking off in July, with events and attractions for the whole family. The popular Ebbett Ice Slide and Unison Light Trail are back, along with a range of free events and ticketed shows. While we look forward to welcoming visitors to our district this winter to

Locals can also make the most of the world-class facilities and attractions we have right on our doorstep. Jump on your bike and warm up by riding along the Taupō lake front, take a drive out to Huka Falls or take your family for a walk up one of the local peaks to take in the view. There’s more to winter than just cold air, short days, woollen hats and sheltering inside. So tell all your friends and family that the Taupō District is the place to be this winter. nce you’ve put the skis away for the day, our town centre is the place to be. With Ruapehu Alpine Lifts’ addition of a new snow centre in the town and Taupō’s winter holiday offering, the town’s about to become a snow hub with a real winter resort town vibe. Whakapapa ski area is just over an hour away, so RAL is turning the town into a base for winter holidays. Along with the multi-million-dollar investment plan for Whakapapa in 2017, RAL is opening two new booking offices in Taupō for on-snow information, ticketing and gear hire in time for the 2017 ski season. They’re also introducing a ski shuttle from Taupō’s town centre and Turangi to Whakapapa, meaning snowgoers will be able to fly in and rely on a regular mountain shuttle service to get them to and from the ski area each day. No more transport woes!
10
Where to at the end of the day? With all the skiers expected in town this winter, we’ve rounded up some of the cosiest places for winding down after a day on the slopes. Vine Eatery and Bar. Vine is the place to be after a day on the snow. Get out of the cold and relax in front of the fire in one of the comfy leather armchairs. Indulge in the dishes that have inspired their New Zealand and Mediterranean influenced menus, or enjoy a mulled wine or cocktail and a platter of nibbles as you warm your toes. The extensive tapas menu is designed to be shared, and they also offer a full a-la-carte menu for those wanting a more traditional approach to dining. Plateau Restaurant and Bar. Another of Taupō’s top restaurants, a popular place for visitors and locals to meet by the warmth of the fire on a chilly winter’s evening. The excellent food represents ‘real New Zealand’ cuisine, and the décor embraces the uniqueness of the Central Plateau region with copper, leather, dark wood and pumice fittings and features.
This restaurant and bar should be your pick if you want a casual place to meet friends and enjoy the best of fresh regional cuisine. Dixie Browns. A cosy place that’s really suited to family dining. Warm up by the fire inside or dine al fresco and enjoy the lake view with heaters and blankets at the outside tables. The menu is wide and varied, ensuring there will be something to suit everyone's tastes, and make sure to leave room for one of their famous desserts or double thick shakes.
SILVER JEWELLERY WITH A DIFFERENCE
SMK (Southern Meat Kitchen). Taupō’s newest concept eatery, bringing smoke and fire to the main eat street. The menu is based around the ‘low and slow’ style of cooking often seen in southern USA restaurants, and the hearty meals are perfectly suited to winter dining. SMK has everything a great winter restaurant needs with a warm fire, fairy lights and cosy indoor or outdoor seating next to heaters. S TO CK IS T O F
For days away from the snow, skiers can enjoy all that the town centre has to offer with our unique, boutique shopping experience, coffee culture, beautiful galleries and homeware stores.

hen you visit the team at CARE NZ, it’s evident why neglected animals find refuge with them. You can feel the safe, happy environment these animals need to thrive. CARE is normally the last resort for animals, and rescues animals from dog pounds, those who have been turned away by other rescues or are faced with euthanasia. The team at CARE is passionate and positive, and always looks outside the box for solutions for each animal, many of whom have been let down by humans. They will step in before it suffers abuse or neglect to the point where it reaches the police or SPCA. A registered NZ charity and the only no-kill animal rescue in the region, CARE provides foster families for each animal in their care, where they are looked after temporarily until they are healthy and ready for adoption. Over the last 18 months, CARE has rescued over 400 animals and have only had to
euthanise four, 99% of their rescued animals are re-homed. “It’s a nurturing, normalising environment which facilitates healing of body, mind and spirit.” – Helen Rabinska, Operations Manager
Help save a life CARE is completely reliant on volunteers and donations. You can help by becoming a foster carer or volunteering with CARE. The more foster carers they have, the more lives they can save. CARE provides their carers with everything they need. You just need to give an animal a home and some much-needed TLC. If you’re keen to help out or just want to find out more about what CARE does, visit them at the CARE Op Shop at 19 Totara Street, Taupō, or get in touch with Helen, Operations Manager, on 027 222 5776, careopsmanager@gmail.com or via Facebook: @CareCommunityNZ.
Meet some of our CARE friends Barney. A stray dog, underweight, and in a poor condition. Barney came to CARE as a reserved and neglected dog. The team at CARE spent many hours giving him company and encouraging his confidence humanity. He began to enjoy his new human friends, freedom and good food. Three months later, he was healthy again and ready to be adopted. Now he’s living in a million-dollar property on the Rotorua Lakefront. 12
Tin Tin. Rescued from a North Island Pound, no one wanted him because he was deaf. Communicating with Tin Tin was a different but rewarding experience for CARE. Trained using a vibrating collar and sign language, he became one of CARE’s most obedient and loyal dogs. Tin Tin eventually joined a compassionate family with big hearts who embraced him as their own.

Learn to Snowboard
By Deepika Sulekh
I’m keen to take up a new challenge this winter. And with Mt Ruapehu’s ski area so close, why not make the most of it by learning one of its most popular extreme sports? This is undoubtedly one of the best ways to enjoy the season!
I
magine the feeling of floating down the slopes, carving your way through fresh, crusty snow, and the pure enjoyment of almost flying. Once you’ve learnt the tricks, you can glide without thinking. So, give yourself a new learning opportunity, master speed and coordination with a new skill, and some variety to your body with a new workout. I sought out Kat, an ex-snowboard instructor, to learn what it’s going to be like from an expert’s perspective. Her first-time experience on a board at the age of 18 lead to a hobby and soon became a job at 21. She loved being able to share her passion through teaching, and making snowboarding fun for learners aged from 4 years old to 60 (that means you can do it too).
etiq uette
don’t be ‘that guy’
• Always stay in control, and be able to stop when you need to. • People ahead of you have the right of way, the reason is simple, they’re always looking downhill and can’t see you. • Never stop where you’re in the way of another trail, or aren’t visible. • Read all signs and warnings. • Before using any lifts, make sure you know how to load, ride and unload it safely. 16
If you’re keen to give it a go, here’s what she recommends: Get a lesson Whether you want to commit to a season or try snowboarding for the first time, it’s important that you learn the proper technique from the start, how to do it right and safely (otherwise you’ll probably spend hours trying figure out how to balance). One lesson takes about 1-2 hours and you’ll learn the basics to be able to get started on your own.
What’s included in a basic lesson? • • • •
Learn about the board and its setup Safety on the mountain Body position technique Board mobility skills
Commit! Fully commit by buying a season pass. If you approach it casually and don’t get up the mountain regularly, it’s going to be hard to stick to and will slow down your learning. But if you give yourself a good season, you’ll be able to get through the initial challenging days and soon be able to do it without thinking and really enjoy it.
Try before you buy It’s nice to have your own gear, but for your first season, hire it. You don’t yet know if snowboarding is for you so there’s no point in owning expensive gear if you don’t end up using it again. Take one financial hit at a time; season pass the first year, your own gear the next year.

ealth and safety compliance systems are a powerful tool for businesses. With the new Health and Safety Act in place, it’s important that you integrate your systems and processes to keep up with all the requirements. More and more businesses are now adopting these to effectively manage their health and safety at work. But you need a system that understands your business, is relevant to your size, and knows the troubles, risks and concerns specific to you. That’s where Safe T Works comes in. Safe T Works listens to you, and gives your business a customised solution based on exactly what you need. It’s well rounded and integrated too, so you won’t just get a health and safety system, Safe T Works conducts training, assessments, drug and alcohol testing, accident investigation, provides consulting and more – everything to help with your safe management practices. Now 14 years old, Safe T Works looks after businesses from Kaitaia to Invercargill, ranging from forestry and farming to tourism operators and retail. It’s not the nature of the business that matters, everyone needs a working health and safety system. With four consultants dedicated to improving the safety culture for their clients, these guys will ensure your safety becomes a solution, not a chore.

So why did you go into business? By Vicki Beker
GENER A L M A N AGER , BFA
A
t BFA, we see it time and time again, that people go into business for the same reasons - they are passionate about what they do, they want to deliver a better service, they want to control their lifestyle, and of course achieve better financial rewards. The reality is for most business owners, only some people achieve some of their goals. Management of the business becomes overwhelming and in many cases management is not one of their key natural skills. How you got here today, is not going to keep you here tomorrow. The only way forward in this fast changing, modern world of competitors and technology, is for business owners to be effective business managers and be able to adjust to change. So how do you manage all this and adapt to change?
Consider your own behaviour first You are the business and you control the culture and direction. Sometimes you may be so tied up doing the day-to-day stuff that you’re not seeing the big picture or you may be making those same old excuses of being ‘way too busy’. You may not know how to handle the stress of staff or just staff issues in general, which is integral to good management.
Identify the change Change involves a review of operations and formulating a plan to re-direct the resources required in reshaping the business. This review can then provide your business with the tools to manage jobs, cash flow, finances, employees and growth, i.e. better business systems and technology. Look at the entire business, not just isolated parts.
Implement and invest in change If you are serious about achieving all those original objectives, commit to the process. Put aside the right time and resources to make this work, and don’t be afraid to get someone to help you drive change like your own “business personal trainer”. So why did you go into business? To do what you love doing, have control and create your future while working for yourself. Don’t be afraid of change. It’s not too late to learn how great management and systems can help you achieve your business goals. 22
Business Advisors and Accountants that take your life’s work seriously Too many businesses fall short of their real potential. We will drive change together to help you live up to that potential.

“I don’t need to be a better communicator”, said no one, ever! By Steph Holloway
ELEMENTA L P OTENTI A L
A
nd if you did, I hate to burst your bubble, but you’re deceiving yourself.
Unless body language is your first language, you are missing out every day in every single human interaction. If you’re only using words and listening, you’ll be around 7% effective as a communicator at best. The other 93%, which is body language, is where the hidden clues lie. What you’re actually seeing by the time you recognise someone’s body language is not just what they are thinking, but what they are feeling. Body language comes from the subconscious, and is attached to the emotions of human interactions. Imagine what your life would look and feel like with more clarity, less misperception, and more insight into what people are thinking and feeling? The clues are there – really! You just miss them. One half of the equation is in the decode. Decoding incoming body language helps you to learn what really happened in response to something that was said or done. The other half of the equation is in the ‘directional’ outgoing body language. This influences and ‘directs’ what you want to happen – a powerful tool in business and personal relationships. 26
So, what’s the easiest way to learn body language? Here are some clues… • Assess the space that people are using and observe how they are using it, e.g. where they’re leaning is where they want to be. • Look at what a person is like when they are at ease, (when they think no one is watching), use that as their baseline. Then if anything changes, you’ll know something is up (good or bad). • Picture a clock face around them, where on the clock are their hands? Down at six means everyday comfort or still a request, between three and nine is maybe no longer a request, something you want done. If someone’s hands are operating at twelve, it’s probably much more important. • Look for ‘gestures’ during conversations where people touch their own face and head. It all means something – if they are thinking, want to hear, feel stressed, intrigued, frustrated. Watch carefully for micro-expressions of the face (which only last a few seconds) for clues about the real emotions being expressed. Communication is key to every aspect of your life, so being effective in this area will only make your life easier. Look no further if you want a new superpower where you don’t need undies on the outside.
Body language basics 2 hour workshop* with 30 minute Q& A Everything you need to know to understand basic decoding and outgoing body language tips and techniques.
$350 +GST
Body language intensive coaching Full day* (6hrs of instruction plus breaks), can be used as a day conference or development day. Rafting New Zealand
Taupō Just Got Cooler By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
T
here’s a certain serene beauty about Taupō in Winter. Crisp days, clear sunny skies and warm afternoons – you can’t beat it! It also gives us a completely different arena to play in compared to other seasons; especially the cool morning mist from the lake and the picturesque backdrop of the snowy mountains. This season it’s time to kick the local ‘bad habit’ of hibernating. So your challenge is to change things up and get in amongst it!
Retail therapy Take advantage of the quieter season and enjoy our town centre and a truly boutique shopping experience. It’s easy to indulge in a little retail therapy with everything so close by. Top up your winter wardrobe while you’re at it, there are many places selling quality merino clothing to keep you
warm and our range of fashion stores are renowned for their unique and often one-off pieces. And why not keep up with winter trends for the home too? Pick up some new manchester or accessories from one of our exceptional homeware stores.
Got mud? It’s a cold, wet day in Taupō – perfect for a quad bike adventure. Ride through the fern-clad native bush, splash through muddy puddles and stop at scenic lookouts throughout. Mud is muddiest in Winter, so what better season to make the most of it? Winter gives our bush trails the right mix of firm and muddy, making the ride even more fun, so you’ll have a blast of a time. Choose to go at your own pace and relish the beautiful surroundings in this adventure-packed, must-do, Winter activity.
Treat yourself Warm up and relax at the same time with the help of these smooth, hot volcanic stones. The hot stone massage uses heated stones to relax your body and warm up tight muscles, relieving chronic pain and most importantly, reducing stress! This Winter, focus on your health 28
and wellbeing and try a hot stone massage, available from most beauty therapists and day spas in Taupō.
Winter rafting Yes, there is such a thing – and it’s the perfect activity for families, groups, and team building. Rafting isn’t always the obvious choice for a typical winter day, but the weather definitely makes the adventure more thrilling – over exciting rapids, through volcanic gorges and exploring hidden places. Worried about the cold? You’ll be completely rugged up in woollen socks, fleece tops, jacket, beanie, gloves and waterproof boots. Plus, you can’t beat the feeling of the wind in your face and the adrenalin pumping. What if it rains? Well you’ll be getting wet anyway, it’s so much more fun when the water is coming at you from all directions!
Fancy a break? Indulging by the fireplace in a local restaurant with the backdrop of rainsplashed windows is a wonderful way to spend a relaxing day. High Tea is fast becoming popular again, so enjoy some time out with family or friends, sip away, taste some delicious cakes, and just relish a moment of freedom from the everyday.

Don’t be SAD By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
D
on’t let SAD (seasonal affective disorder) take over this season. As the days become colder and darker, we tend to sleep longer, crave carbs and our mood declines. So, when your mood, motivation and energy starts to fall as fast as the thermometer, beat those winter blues with these top tips.
Keep moving It’s cold, it’s hard to stay motivated, and activity levels drop. Dig deep (whether it’s indoors or out) and keep moving. When colds and flus start to show their face,
exercise helps keep you warm and keeps your immunity and recovery levels up. Once your blood is pumping, the immune cells circulate your body much faster, helping them locate and rid infection.
Seek the sun If an island getaway is out of the question, then get outside and soak up some natural daylight. While boosting your vitamin D, a daily dose of sunlight keeps your immune system strong. Failing that, focus on eating D-rich foods such as fortified milk, juice, and cereal; fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and mackerel; and cheese or egg yolks. Lastly, you could consider taking a D2 or D3 supplement.
Eat healthy Surviving winter is all about keeping our immune system up so fight those carb cravings, and the greasy, filling foods that slow you down and opt for lots of fruit, vegetables and nuts instead. These are high in protein, will help you stay immune towards winter illnesses and convert to usable energy. And remember, chicken soup isn’t just for the soul. Soups are a terrific way to sneak in heaps of vegetables, warming you up at the same time. 34
Feel good When you focus too much on physical health, often your emotional health gets neglected. The happier you feel, the healthier you’ll be – so get the beauty therapy, get your hair done, and take some time to pamper yourself. A massage is a particularly great way to reduce stress, relax and feel good. They’re not just a treat anymore, they also improve immune functions and energy levels.
Top up Sometimes we need a little help and that’s where winter supplements step in to support these tips; • Omega 3 Fish Oil; amongst many of its benefits, this can help tackle winter depression. • St John’s Wort; this is a natural mood booster and improves mental wellbeing. • Melatonin; a vital hormone that regulates your body’s circadian rhythm (internal clock). The lack of exposure to light during winter disrupts this rhythm – melatonin gets your rhythm and good sleep back on track. • Vitamin B6; so many benefits! In winter, it is needed to make the hormones serotonin and norepinephrine, which affect mood. It also helps make melatonin.

Paleo Apple Berry Crumble Serves 4-6 Apple/Berry Mix: 4 apples (roughly 750g in total), peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces 85g honey (raw and organic) optional 1 tbsp coconut oil Zest of one orange 1 tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp of vanilla powder or 1 vanilla pod, split 320g fresh or frozen mixed berries 3 tbsp water
Crumble Topping: 1 cup almond or hazelnut flour ½ cup activated macadamia nuts finely cut or blended ½ cup activated pistachio nuts – finely cut or blended ½ cup shredded coconut 2 tbsp coconut oil – melted 85g honey (raw and organic) ½ tsp ground cinnamon Pinch of sea salt Coconut yoghurt (optional) 36
There's no better 'winter warmer' than a crumble. This recipe flips the traditional crumble on its head with a Paleo twist, but don't panic! It tastes so good, you'll forget all about the fact that it's healthy. Even better... this crumble is delicious served cold the next day. Method: Preheat oven to 160°C. Filling: Combine the apple, honey, coconut oil, orange zest, cinnamon, vanilla pod or powder, and water in a saucepan. Cover and cook over a low-medium heat, stirring occasionally until the apple softens. Add berries, cover, and cook for a further 3-4 minutes until the berries start to burst/ soften. Remove the vanilla pod if using. Meanwhile, to make the crumble topping, place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well (it helps to soften/melt the honey beforehand).
Pour the filling into a baking dish and sprinkle over the crumble topping to cover. Bake for 15 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to stand for a few minutes before serving. Serve with coconut yoghurt.

Although they’ve known to be around since 1850, the last 20 years have seen huge developments, especially in battery technology. New Zealand already has the technology and infrastructure to get started. You may have seen the fast charger next to the fire station on Kaimanawa Street, and soon we’ll have two more popping up at Z stations in Taupō and Turangi. Fast car chargers are 25 times faster than your power socket at home, giving you a full tank in approximately 10 – 20 minutes. But it’s actually cheaper and easier to charge your vehicle at home by plugging it in overnight in your garage. With potentially more chargers coming to supermarkets, malls, shopping centres and tourist spots, accessibility will be even easier. The biggest win is the reduction in carbon emissions and positive environmental impact. Over 80% of New Zealand’s electricity comes from renewable sources, which is the best way to power our vehicles, no exhaust fumes and engine noise. Because of the absence of petrol, driving an electric vehicle produces 80% less carbon
dioxide emissions – improving the health of pedestrians, cyclists and anyone who uses the roads.
Make the switch There’s already around 3200 electric vehicles on the road, and that figure’s doubling every year. With so many options now available, the convenience of charging, ease of maintaining and of course, environmental benefits, it makes sense – electric is the way to go. • 20 moving parts compared to over 2000 for a normal car, maintenance is a breeze! • Instant acceleration • Easy charging, plug it in to your normal socket at home overnight and you’ll have a full tank in the morning. • Cheaper to run, equivalent to paying 30 cents for petrol. • No exhaust fumes so no pollution.
