Spring is in the Air

It’s good to see spring has sprung here in the Taupō District. Once again we are looking forward to a fantastic summer with a number of events on the calendar and some warmer weather on the way. It is easy to get bogged down in the negative during the dreariness of winter but this year there has not been much really to get down about. There has been lots of activity on the mountains with the new Ruapehu Alpine Lifts initiative drawing in lots of people both to Taupō and other surrounding

6

districts, and our main townships have been bustling almost every weekend with people making the most of what we have to offer. Taupō District Council has recently relocated the staff who work in the Lake Terrace office to Taupō’s CBD too which has added another dimension of vibrancy to our main retail precinct. Building has also been booming! In July, there were 40 new houses built in the district and another seven demolished and rebuilt which is the highest level of activity we have seen for some time. While total numbers are still being confirmed, figures to the end of June showed 109 building consents were issued with a total value of $168.9 million. As a council we have a strong focus on promoting economic development and ensuring the Taupō District remains a great place to live so it is heartening to see things moving along at a great rate. It also means the secret’s out about how great our place is and it is likely we will continue development for the next

wee while at least with a number of subdivisions being developed in and around the district. Looking forward, it seems there is another events season to remember on the horizon. Events kick off again in earnest this month with hockey and football teams from around the country descending on us for the New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament, the Jock Hobbs Under-19 Rugby featuring developmental age group players from 16 provincial teams, the Tuwharetoa Kapa Haka Festival and the Global Games. Check out www.greatlaketaupo.com and get amongst it! David Trewavas TAUP Ō DIS TRIC T M AYOR

THE HUB UPDATE What we do

C

entrally located at Level One, 32 Roberts St, the Hub agencies provide the mechanisms for economic development, tourism, events, business and town centre advocacy in the Taupō District. Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district. We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend. Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity. Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding. Enterprise Great Lake Taupō (EGLT) is the economic development agency for the Taupō district. Whether you wish to start a business, grow your business, do business or move your business to Taupō, we can help.

Campaign Activity Improves Retail Spend Recent campaign activity focused on attracting out-of-town visitors to Taupō's town centre is considered a factor in the increase in retail spend for the second quarter of this year.

D

uring this successful quarter, Towncentre Taupō ran the Shop in Taupō scratchy card campaign alongside Destination Great Lake Taupō's autumn campaign. This included print advertising in selected regions and promotion through social media channels. Dedicated editorial in the Hawkes Bay Today featured Taupō's boutique shopping experience and the Shop in Taupō campaign. This appears to have had a real impact on retail spend in our region by visitors from Hawkes Bay with spend by this group up 19.4% on the same quarter last year. Apparel retail spend (by visitors from all regions) was up 7.7%, a much-improved performance from the previous quarter when there was only a 1% increase. The greatest increase in spend was by international visitors, up 35.8%. This is

19.4 % Spend Increase Hawkes Bay

35.8 % Spend Increase International

no doubt a direct result of the surge in international visitors during the Lions Tour, but also a reflection of the overall increase in international visitor numbers to our region in the past year, a trend that can be seen nationally.

Local loyalty Taupō residents continue to show a high level of loyalty to shopping locally, with local cardholders spending 70% at local merchants. This is higher than the New Zealand average of 64.9%.

How do we stack up compared to other regions? Overall, the Taupō district had the second highest level of growth within our competitor group of Nelson, Rotorua, Napier, Thames and Queenstown (Queenstown had the highest growth) for the second quarter of 2017. We were second in recreational spend, only just shy of Rotorua, and we beat all other competitors in spend on accommodation and hardware/homewares.

Ross Liew

Street Artists Return to Taupō By Ross Liew

S TREE T A RTIS T & GR A FFI ATO CUR ATOR

I

never expected the event to have this type of longevity when I applied for the job to curate the festival after spotting it advertised online in 2011. But it also shouldn’t surprise me given I’ve been a believer in the transformative power of public art for a long time now. While festivals of this nature now feature right around the country, the 120 or so pieces created within Graffiato over the years represents the widest ranging and most comprehensive survey of New Zealand artists working in this field. No other city has such a rich collection of

walls where you can see the breadth of talent and vision that resides within our country. This collection will further expand in October when 10 more artists meet in Taupō to make their contribution. Featuring a mix of returning artists and those making their Graffiato debut, we can expect to see a range of diverse and exciting works being painted over the course of the long weekend. Make a point of catching the artists in action, it’ll lend new insight into what could be your new favourite artwork.

This Labour Weekend Graffiato will be back in town for the seventh time making it the longest running festival of its kind in New Zealand. Favourite works With so many pieces created over the years I could have a different favourite for each time I’m asked. In this case I’ve picked the piece by the brothers Marty and Elliot (aka Roach and Numskull) painted in 2012. I’m a sucker for hand drawn lettering and I also really respond to the pop culture reference regarding Ghostbusters.

Snow Season in Full Swing

D

GLT kicked off their winter marketing this year with a comprehensive domestic campaign promoting the region as a top winter ski holiday destination. The campaign promotes ski and snow experiences alongside other winter activities in the region. Developments at Whakapapa this year include the new Delta Chair (replacing the Waterfall T Bar) for intermediate skiers and boarders, and the new Schuss Haus Corona Bar at Hutt Flat. The Corona Bar is tipped to be the top social spot on the mountain with music, cold beer and Mexican food. Night skiing on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting) has also been introduced in 2017 with

Lorenz’s Bar and Café open late serving woodfired pizzas and mulled wine.

A premier ski destination RAL has created a snow presence in Taupō, with the development of two new outlets in the town centre – Snow Depot on Tongariro Street and Snow HQ on Roberts Street. A new Snow Shuttle departs from outside the Snow Depot at 8am every morning, with pick-ups in Turangi, returning at the end of the day. This is a milestone year for the North Island ski industry, and the team at Destination Great Lake Taupō are working hard to put our region on the map and in the minds of winter holidaymakers.

We do appreciate that not all boat buyers have spent their lives around boats and know the correct procedures when buying or using the craft. Which is why we put everything into making sure the owner feels confident about using their new marine craft before it leaves our yard and provide as much ongoing service as we can.

bucket list The

Discover Golf

By Deepika Sulekh

So I want to try golf. A different kind of challenge and something on the bucket list for the not-so-adventurous, but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult – a game of strategy and tactics, it takes brain power.

D

id you know New Zealand has the second highest number of golf courses per capita in the world? We’re already a golfing nation, and with Taupō’s natural landscapes and unique terrains, we even have the perfect spot for it. There are four golf courses in Taupō, all with a variety of features, that means there’s a type of course for every level. What makes us so unique is our weather and soil – the pumice soils drain themselves and don’t get bogged down in water, great for those who want to start learning. Summer’s the best time to play, but that’s why you need to start learning in Spring. So by the time Summer comes, you’ll be able to enjoy it during the best time of year for golf. There’s the health benefits too. One full round of golf can burn 700 calories! Because it’s a physically and mentally demanding game. Aside from body position and technique, there’s also strategy and tactics involved, your mind is completely focused. And that’s why it’s a great way to escape from reality for a while, relieve stress and just forget about everything else.

Keen? Get a lesson Learn the basics of grip, alignment, positioning, swings, putting, chipping and all the lingo too. This is the best way to learn because you won’t have ingrained any bad habits yet and will have loads of questions about what to do. Also, do your hands a favour and wear gloves to ease the pressure. 16

Most clubs run a beginner programme that runs a few weeks, including all gear and practice facilities.

Tips for beginners: • If you’re not sure about anything, ask a professional • Hire equipment before you buy • Sundays are the quieter days if you want time and space to practice • When in doubt, stick to the basics • Try and play as quick as you can – the more you think, the more difficult it will feel

Who can play? Anyone. It’s a sport for all sportspeople, families, kids, and any age group. Plus, a great weekend activity with the families or holiday fun in a Juniors Club for the kids. Golf is an all-in-one sport; social, skilful, and enjoyable. It’s time you discovered golf.

Why? The state of men’s health is in crisis. Men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier.

Thinking of listing your property on AirBnB? By Mark Sinclair

CLIENT DIREC TOR - BEK ER FINDL AY A LL A N

If you’re thinking of listing your home or a space in your home on AirBnB, or other holiday rental sites, you’ll be among 306 others listed within the Taupō region. Success of these short-term rental websites has created interest at the IRD, and they want a cut of the action.

T

he IRD expects you to file a tax return if you have earnt income. Here’s some tips to make things easier and make sure you and your home are covered.

• Cleaning and laundry • Maintenance of your property – a portion of your upkeep expenses such as gardening could be claimed.

Keep records

Talk to your insurer and your bank

It’s vital to keep good records and track your income and expenses. Get advice on the best use of technology to collate your records.

Advise your bank and your insurance company that you are renting out your home or a portion of it, so they can determine whether any changes need to be made to your account or insurance.

Claim expenses Anything you spend renting out a property may be claimed as an expense. For shared expenses, it needs to be a fair and reasonable portion. Examples include: • A portion of your home utilities such as electricity, gas, internet, Sky TV, heating and security • A portion of council rates, insurance and interest • Food and consumables (tea/coffee, toilet paper, etc.) that you offer your guests • A portion of travel to and from the property • Depreciation on chattels and appliances exclusively for guest use (e.g. hair dryers, heater, refrigerators) 24

Own a home and rent out another? If you own more than one home, it is critical to get these in the right tax structures. Talk to your accountant about which property ownership structure best suits your needs.

Need some help? An accountant will help you assess your needs, minimise your risk and maximise your profits. They can also help take the pain out of filing a tax return. Beker Findlay Allan offers a free consultation to help assess your needs to get you on the right track.

Buying Property? Do your due diligence By Catriona Eagles

SENIOR RE S OURCE M A N AGEMENT PL A NNER

When buying property, be aware of all approaches and tools that can build certainty and reduce your risk. The degree of due diligence varies, depending on the quality of information you receive and the time available. When doing an information search, buyers generally do title searches, Land Information Memorandums and builder’s reports. However there are other approaches and tools available under the Resource Management Act and engineering practices.

site may have geotechnical challenges, another needs the wastewater main upgraded. Identifying these issues early and understanding cost implications will help determine the project’s likely success.

Catriona Eagles is a Senior Resource Management Planner for Cheal Consultants Ltd and full member of the New Zealand Planning Institute.

Existing Use Rights Certificate

Our Top 5 Tips Resource Consent for Buildings The resource consent process identifies issues and determines solutions to achieve the certainty you need and arrive at an approved outcome. Sale and Purchase agreements are regularly made conditional on obtaining resource consent (three to four months should be allowed to complete this process).

Subdivision In subdividing land, you should understand servicing costs and viability through preparing a conceptual scheme and identifying areas of potential risk. One 26

IEP and Geotechnical Assessments The seismic stability of older buildings should be investigated through an Initial Evaluation Process (IEP) to identify if upgrade works are necessary. Similarly, geotechnical assessments can be carried out on vacant sites to identify any specific foundation design for new buildings. For existing activities, you can apply for an Existing Use certificate to confirm if you can continue this activity or carry out a similar activity. A similar activity has to be similar in scale, character and intensity, but provided the original activity was legally established, it may be appropriate (allow a three to four month period).

Water Takes/Wastewater Discharges We recommend you research water takes and wastewater discharges expiry dates and confirm the ability to continue these activities. Again, you might need resource consents. Every due diligence exercise will be different. Make sure you are clear on what you need to know with the necessary technical experts, ensuring the due diligence period is sufficient for the information needed.

Finding Love – Old School vs New School? By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER

and the new age ‘swipe rights’, maybe it’s more important to identify what we can learn and apply from each era?

Old School

What do you think is the best way to find love? Do you prefer the ‘Old School’ way of going out, socialising and meeting new people or the ‘New School’ way of online and dating apps?

W

ith more and more people now adopting the ‘new school’ way, thanks to smartphones and technology, the dating game is evolving fast and we may have forgotten how simple it used to be. Why do we look for old school magic in our relationships today? But instead of comparing the old and the new, or dividing our readership between the good old fashioned ‘meet & greeters’

28

Space. You didn’t have to call each other so many times every day, taking over each other’s personal lives, living in each other’s pocket. The irregular meetings (and build up to them) were something special in themselves. Picking up the phone. Yes, no texting, snapchatting or emoji wars. Communication was much more clearer when you had an actual conversation. Taking it steady. You didn’t need to announce your love to the world on the first date. It took a long time for people to get to know each other, but it was worth it. Give yourself some time to fall in love naturally.

New School Technology. Use it to your advantage. The best thing about technology and dating apps today is that you can get tailored recommendations based your interests, so maybe there’s a better chance you’ll find someone who fits. Breaking stereotypes. Men don’t always have to pay, women can ask men out, and

you don’t need to play hard to get. The liberal nature of today’s relationships and communication means these rules now don’t matter. Confidence attracts. Be who you are, and if you’re interested in someone, let it show, they’re not going to realise any other way. More options. You can come across people outside of your social circle, town or even country. If it works well, you can still bring them to your place. If you’re looking for love, you don’t need to take a side, try mixing it up. Use the advantages of technology but take it slow and keep the communication personal. There’s no one size fits all, don’t let this ‘new norm’ confuse your morals or your marriages, so pick and choose what works for you.

A favourite for families and friends with a diverse menu to match, Plateau has the perfect atmosphere for locals and visitors alike, savouring friendships around the table for 13 years. 30

ward-winning, fine craft beers, Kiwi inspired food and an a la carte experience is just the tip of the iceberg, “what we really value is the complete experience for the customer – great food is always priority, but everything else such as lighting, music, warmth and hosting is just as important”. Plateau has a charm of its own, whether you choose from casual dining, the restaurant or bar, providing an all-round service for anyone. The experience at Plateau is relaxed in all the right places and always something people look forward to. The team also prides themselves on using the best ingredients, with the menu inspired by locally sourced produce, free range and organic ingredients and Taupō Beef & Lamb. Doing their part in supporting local businesses and looking after the environment, Plateau has gained a strong reputation over the years in helping the local community.

The driving force behind this passionate team are the hands-on owners, Frankie and Kate Walker. Years of hospitality and customer service experience behind them, Frankie and Kate know what it takes to provide great service and have created the unique character that is Plateau.

Meet the Head Chef New to the Plateau crew is Executive Chef, Reuben Lynn. Previously working at Bistro Lago and The Powder Horn in Ohakune, Reuben moved to Taupō for a change in lifestyle. What do you love about working in Taupō? The local following, I love feeling like I’m part of the community and being among the residents and families here. It has a nice, casual feel.

What are your culinary strengths? Creativity in flavour combinations – I like to experiment with ethnic flavours and how they can add an international touch to our New Zealand cuisine. It’s like my way of travelling and experiencing the different cultures of the world. Also, I’m always researching and looking for new ideas and recipes. There’s always ways to make improvements or change flavours and I like to try everything.

What inspires your menu? Our menus are seasonal and we always like to have a range of flavours. We make sure everything is fresh, such as meat, fish and oysters. Your fish would be swimming in the afternoon and on your plate at dinnertime. Our oysters are shucked and even the smoking is done inhouse. We take care to put effort in all the details.

What’s your favourite dish to make? The market fish – there’s so many ways to get creative with fish and I enjoy that. It also keeps changing because we source fresh and sustainable fish, so there’s more ways to play with it.

What are the customer favourites? Seafood, especially oysters. We’ve heard our seafood is some of the best in town. Beef and lamb too, and we love to hear that because we feel proud to support local farmers by using Taupō beef and lamb.

What’s the most rewarding part of the job? Transforming the raw ingredients into something exquisite, and getting great feedback for all our hard work. I also enjoy training our younger chefs and passing on knowledge and techniques that help them do better.

NZ CUISINE , WINE & CRAFT BEER Taupo’s favourite local meeting place Fun and relaxed atmosphere Seasonally inspired menu Locally owned & operated since 2004

What’s the most challenging? Being organised, juggling so many orders at once, and the 20-minute deadline. It can get stressful with long hours, but it’s all about making that time productive, I make about 50-60 meals a night, and around 100 on a weekend night.

FINDING YOUR PL ACE

For Taupō businesses, being niche may seem like a challenge, but with our growing town and supportive community, for many, challenge has become opportunity.

Central Property Stylists Quality home and business staging

C

ombining Lisa Lovelock’s interior designing and Sarah Voyce’s architecture business skills, Central Property Stylists carved its niche in home and business staging in Taupō. With these services previously outsourced by locals, Lisa and Sarah saw the need for our homes and spaces to be presented to their maximum potential – helping to maximise the sale price of a property, partial or full staging, or providing advice and expertise. When you’re selling your home, having it staged creates an experience for the buyer, making it look functional, appealing, and a place where they

Lush Lane

Simple but lush: Indoor plants for homes and businesses

H

olly McDowell started this venture in Wellington when no one could find quality indoor plants. Her love for plants, a ‘comeback’ of plants in interior design, and inspiration from the local indoor plant nursery gave Lush Lane the perfect opportunity to take off. Operating through Instagram, Facebook and various plant pop-up events, she showcases her collections and keeps in touch with her followers largely on social media. Moving to Taupō for family, friends and lifestyle didn’t slow anything down. In fact, Holly now gives her touch of lushness to office fitouts and home redesigns. Initially worried about demand in a small town,

34

Holly actively networked, participated in local events, and met new people to establish herself in Taupō.

The challenges? “My self-doubt. I wasn’t sure if it would work or if I could manage it, I really had to push myself outside of my comfort zone. But I kept myself motivated to start small and work from there.”

Your advice? “Just do it. If it’s something you really love, just give it a go.” Follow Lush Lane on Instagram: @lushlane

The challenges? “Creating interest and awareness in the early phase, and helping people to understand the benefits of home staging.”

Your advice? “Do your due diligence, don’t overexpand too early and keep everything manageable.” For more information email info@centralpropertystylists.nz

Love Music

All your musical instrument needs

W

hen David and Emily opened the doors to Love Music two years ago, they were ecstatic to see the immediate support and encouragement from the local community. With David’s 15 years’ experience in the industry, previously working in Auckland, he moved to Taupō with his wife Emily to start their own independent music business and continue their passion. David’s extensive knowledge and strong network allowed him to curate his own collection of instruments and stock the best products for Love Music. Alongside

instruments, you can also get books, accessories, repairs, and music lessons too. For one of the few independent music shops in the country, it’s the positive word of mouth, loyal customer base, and a passion for music that keeps Love Music ticking.

The challenges? “Moving to a new town and starting the new business at the same time. And learning that what works here is different to Auckland, it took time to understand what people want and stocking the right

products. But the rewarding part was seeing the buy-in from locals, they loved that they could buy instruments in Taupō.”

Your advice? “Learn what the trends are locally and work out what people want. And be willing to admit what you don’t know, we learn so much from our customers.” Find out more at www.lovemusicshop.co.nz

XOX Floral

Wild, rustic florals straight from the garden

K

risten Somerville doesn’t stock the traditional range of flowers most florists do, instead she prefers to go out and gather her own so customers can buy what’s fresh and seasonally available. Bouquets are put together using what’s been foraged from gardens, the roadside and other wanderings, which give them a wild, fresh, vintage feel. Initially starting out as a specialist wedding florist service, XOX Floral has gained momentum in the last year becoming the full service florist it is today with a studio newly opened. “It wouldn’t be the business it is today if I didn’t live in Taupō. There are some unique challenges that come with living here because there are no local flower markets or growers to rely on, and everything has to come on an overnight courier so I had to find a way to

make my business work by doing things differently.”

The challenges? “You need perseverance and the ability to back yourself because it takes time to get established. But the reaction from my customers has been incredible and that’s what has made me believe I’ve got something worthwhile to offer.” Your advice? “Taupō is definitely a challenging market, but everyone’s very supportive and keen to see you make it work. Take the time to figure out your product, because what works elsewhere isnot always what works here, but your business will be the better for it.” Find out more at www.xoxfloral.co.nz 35

48 Hours in Taupō By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER

TV personality and host of TV Three’s The Café, Mike Puru spent a weekend in Taupō recently to MC the Service IQ Great Lake Taupō Business Awards. The highlights of your visit?

W

ith just two days to spend, he made the most of the time he had in our town to experience the vibe, the adventure and our hospitality. Before he left, I grabbed the chance to catch up with him, getting his take on our beloved town.

What were the first things that stood out when you arrived? As soon as I landed I couldn’t get over how beautiful the scenery is, the airport has free parking (you don’t get that in Auckland), and coming into town I could see it’s grown bigger and busier than I can remember. 38

Storehouse Café – best chicken sliders I’ve ever had. Throwing myself out of a plane from 15,000 feet, can’t beat that. Winding down after the jump at Wairakei Terraces, then having the best buffet in town at the Wairakei Resort. Visiting the town centre while it was buzzing with the marathon participants and supporters. Craters of the Moon – the best $8 I’ve spent in a long time. It was scenic, peaceful and fascinating walking the steaming ground and reflecting on the volcanic plateau.

What’s your first impression of Taupō businesses and locals? I love that there’s a smorgasbord of businesses here – businesses that have been here a long time and become

generational, with previous employees who grew to own their own businesses. They are so well supported locally and really helping the economy. And the locals, people here are so friendly and helpful everywhere I go.

Your favourite activity while you were here? Has to be Skydiving. Everything about it was so memorable – getting picked up in the Hummer Limo, the views and the whole experience. There’s no better place, no better day, and no better company to do it with than here. Even a walk along the lakefront – the views and atmosphere are so relaxing, and it’s away from the bustling town but still so close. I’ve only been here a couple of days, and I’ve fallen in love with the place – it’s a perfect town all-round. Great for families, action-seekers, the quiet ones – anyone can fit in. Plus, being supported by a large infrastructure of businesses makes it even more versatile. Taupō is big enough to have everything a city offers, and small enough for everyone to enjoy it.

Meet the Laser Hair Removal Experts at Caci Taupo Tried and tested by the team: The best part is not having to worry about needing to shave or wax!

Penny

Adele

Alex

Maria

It’s important to take care when choosing your hair removal provider, to ensure you are getting the best possible results, in a safe and trusted environment. Caci were the first to bring laser hair removal technology to New Zealand. We started with Lasers but have now progressed to using the latest generation VPL (variable pulsed light) in all Caci clinics. The variable settings mean that the machines can effectively treat the different types of hair found all over the body, from thicker underarm hair to finer facial hair. At Caci Taupo we ensure that you understand the treatment process and that you are suitable for the treatment. During your free consultation, we fully explain the process, expectations, costs, and advise you of any risks associated with this treatment.

Adele is a Senior Beauty Therapist and Laser Operator at Caci. Adele likes that Caci are always reviewing how we use VPL technology – meaning she gets to upskill and offer the best results for clients. All Caci staff have been extensively trained at the Caci Training Academy, and we have very thorough processes in place to ensure you receive the highest level of care, with minimal risk, in a safe environment. At Caci, we treat the following areas with laser hair removal: – Face – Neck – Chest – Arms – Underarms – Back – Legs – Stomach – Bikini line – Brazilian

At Caci, a programme of laser hair removal can take up to 48 weeks to ensure that we have treated the hair follicles in each growth phase. We also offer an exclusive guarantee! During the treatment, some people feel no pain at all and some feel a slight heat sensation, and some have likened the sensation to mild stinging or the flicking of a rubber band.

For Penny, Caci Taupo Owner, Laser Hair Removal was the reason behind opening her own Caci clinic. This treatment really makes a diference in women’s lives. Penny and her team love how worthwhile it is to see and hear from a client (often with tears) how treatment has changed their life. If you would like to find out more, contact the Caci Taupo team on 0800 458 458 and book a free consultation to see if it’s right for you.

On average we spend a whole day shaving our legs each year.

At Caci we guarantee an 80% reduction of hair. Payments on Caci’s Freedom® laser hair removal programme start from as little as $20 / week.

Treat two areas for the price of one until September 30 with Caci’s laser hair removal plan! T’S & C’S APPLY

Planning the Work Christmas Party By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER

‘Tis almost the season for holiday cheer, end of year celebrations, and of course, the work Christmas party. You may think you’ve still got time, but you don’t!

always have options and be able to work around your choices. (Make sure you’ve asked about your team’s allergies and dietary requirements).

3. Sort out entertainment

5. Organise transport

Here’s your chance to get creative! Most businesses either attempt new and different, or do the same thing and establish a tradition. Whether you theme your event and engage a hire service to guide you, enlist entertainment like a musician, magician or hypnotist, or get your team doing an activity – Taupō has a great range of options right under your nose.

As a responsible host, make sure people know about getting to and from the event, if it’s a surprise – you’re in charge of organising it. Arrange carpooling, have the local taxi numbers available for anyone who may need them on the night.

hose Christmas Party dates are already getting booked up, so if you haven’t squared your work-do away, we’re here to inspire your plans.

1. Mark the date & set your budget First things first, work out when and how much. Christmas is a busy period for social events, especially for our little town – which means venues, caterers, activities etc, are all in demand. Get a date in your team’s diary as soon as possible, and if you can set a budget, it means you can enlist someone to help you with your planning.

2. Book the venue The best venues get booked up fast. Taupō has an abundance of options from restaurants to boats, and venues that combine location with activity in the same breath. In choosing a venue, match it (as closely as possible) to suit the mood of the team you are taking, best fit will ensure the majority have a great time. Get into the festive spirit and jump on board Top Cat to cruise our stunning lake for a Christmas party with a difference! – Top Cat Cruises 40

Tongariro River Rafting gives your team the real outdoors experience this Christmas. Raft down the Tongariro River and then stop for a BBQ on the banks of the river, in a picturesque and serene spot only accessible by raft. It's the ultimate way to relax and unwind after a busy year with your team in the great outdoors. – Tongariro River Rafting

4. Plan the menu & drinks Probably the most important part. Find caterers that can work to your budget and theme. The best start is to get their recommendations, they’ll know what works, and if you have preferences, they’ll

And if you’re really stuck, remember it’s not just on you to plan a great party, brainstorm with your team/staff for ideas on what they want to do – they’ll love to get involved. Think about adding a cherry on top like hiring a photographer or photobooth, competitions and prizes throughout the night, or goodie bags – it’s the little things that make a big difference. Here’s hoping you have a Christmas cracker of a party, good luck!

TAGLIATELLE Method Cook the pasta in boiling salted water for 3 to 5 minutes or until al dente. Drain and return pasta to saucepan. Cover and keep warm. Toss to combine.

Spring Cleaning Tips By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER

Winter may be gone but it’s left behind traces of itself in dust, clutter, and everything you couldn’t be bothered dealing with in the cold. So now that it’s time for some fresh Spring air, your home needs it too.

W

e know that spring cleaning can seem like a huge chore, but it doesn’t have to be. So we’ve put together some handy tips to help you get through it, without the stress.

cleaning. Use a steam-cleaner or natural combinations like vinegar and baking soda. These are affordable, non-toxic, and effective.

Declutter

Who says spring cleaning has to be hard? Take it slow and steady if you need to, a good idea is to plan for a weekend. Start with the spots that will have the most impact first, like the pantry and fridge, this helps you feel accomplished and motivated while you continue throughout the house.

First things first, declutter every room or area you need to clean. It’s going to reduce your stress level and make your job way easier. Plus, you won’t be able to move on if you keep running into things that belong elsewhere and need moving.

Think green To save yourself and your home from harsh cleaners, try avoiding too many chemicals and toxins while you’re

Step-by-step

Remember the air We generally forget about the air ducts when cleaning and don’t realise they also collect allergens and chemicals. Make sure to clean or replace your filters to improve the indoor air quality so you’re breathing clean, healthy air again.

Share the load You should never have to tackle this alone, get the whole family involved – because more hands make light work. Give the smaller jobs to the kids, e.g. sorting or restocking. Add some upbeat 44

music or competitive elements, even spring cleaning is fun when you do it together. Then reward everyone at the end of the day. Another handy tip is to be realistic when it comes to time and ability; you’re only good at so many things, enlist professionals to help speed things up. Divide and conquer!

Beware of the allergies Winter dust has settled everywhere, and if you’re one to start sneezing, then make sure you wear rubber gloves, masks or even a hairnet and save yourself from the allergies and skin irritations. Now’s also a good time to start dry cleaning the blankets and duvets, and vacuuming and flipping the mattresses.

SHIELD, RESTORE & PROTECT YOUR ASSETS

Have you noticed the years of harmful UV and weather damage happening to your property? It’s our most valuable investment and one we don’t often think about protecting from the weather elements, sun damage and fading. But our natural environment does end up affecting these and weakening their surface quality over time. That’s why you need to know about Nano-Clear. 48

N

ano-Clear is a life-saver when it comes to property maintenance. It’s a permanent, clear coat protection for your aluminium joinery, flooring, garage door, fencing, roofing and anything else that can do with a clear coat, providing a layer of protection that’s six times harder than paint. Nano-Clear is a new business in Taupō, established in July by locals Dan and Bex Chubb. Backed by Dan’s 12 years’ experience in engineering and industrial coatings and the international Nano-Clear brand, the duo are excited about their new venture and bringing this amazing technology to Taupō locals. The product was extensively tested in the USA before coming to New Zealand in 2012 and being tested here. It outperformed all other other coating

products on many tests including QUV resistance, salt fog, water immersion, pencil hardness and abrasion resistance. In a country where the UV conditions are among the harshest in the world, our surfaces face damage from this environment, such as fading, oxidisation,

corrosion and abrasion. Manufactured using 3D nanostructure polymers, NanoClear coats these surfaces to rejuvenate colour and gloss on colour steel cladding, roofing, and fencing while providing a strong layer of clear coating protection. It will cost you more than a couple of polishing jobs, but you will be significantly extending the life and value of your assets and preventing years’ worth of damage, maintenance and depreciation. Drastically improving surface protection, maintenance and asset resale value, Nano-Clear is a total solution for protecting your investment. “Nano-Clear has saved me thousands of dollars. Getting my first branding painted was very expensive and a lot of time went into masking and painting the two colours. When it all faded, I thought I’d have to pay all that money to have it done again. But Nano-Clear brought the colour back to reflect its original shine and depth, to maintain the professional image I like to keep. It was only about half the price of what I paid originally, plus it’s guaranteed to last longer than if I had repainted it. I’m 100% happy with the outcome and would recommend this to anyone.” – Deane Mark, Te Awamutu

Why is Nano-Clear the best choice? Extreme corrosion resistance Extreme abrasion resistance Weatherproof gloss Improves brand appearance Significant reduction in the re-paint cycle • Reduces cleaning and maintenance by 60% • Extends the value and life of your asset

How Nano-Clear provides permanent protection

A magnified view of how a new or good condition, unprotected surface looks like.

If we do not fill the pores of the existing coating, UV and surface containments break down the walls, causing fading, staining and condensation.

Proven to revive and protect fibreglass, paint, plastics, vinyl, gel coat, powder coat and colour steel. SHIELDS AGAINST: • Oxidisation • Fading • Corrosion • Abrasion • UV Degradation

Nano-Clear has cross linking modules that fit into the pores of your existing coating providing permanent protection against the elements. Nano-Clear will not break down or wash away like traditional polishes that provide no long lasting qualities.
