seasons Celebrating the

A

s we welcome a new edition of 33Thirty we can also welcome the new beginnings spring brings to the Taupō District. The warmer weather tells us winter has passed, another cracking summer is just around the corner, and our events calendar ramps up even more. This winter we held another hugely successful Malcolm Flowers Insurance Taupō Winter Festival, with the added bonus of a distinctly Chinese flavour, as we celebrated our 10-year anniversary with our sister city of Suzhou in China. We had everything from chefs to opera singers, VIP’s to journalists and everything in between come and experience our Taupō district and its hospitality.

The visit was a fantastic time to continue to not just build on our friendly ties with Suzhou, but to learn about each other’s culture, share ideas and explore business and educational opportunities. The relationship between Taupō and Suzhou has developed well since 2008, with civic exchange trips, exhibitions and the sharing of knowledge and skills being beneficial to us both. Our celebrations don’t end with winter, as Taupō Museum hosts ‘Faith and Life’ a world-class exhibition from Suzhou. This features treasures from the Tang and Song dynasties, including pieces dating back to 618 AD. Be sure to visit and get a glimpse into the fascinating world of ancient China. To our local business owners, thanks for everything you do to make our district great. Your ongoing natural ability to host and entertain makes up a large part of what makes this a fantastic place to live.

entrally located at Level One, 32 Roberts St, the Hub agencies provide the mechanisms for economic development, tourism, events, business and town centre advocacy in the Taupō District. Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district. We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend. Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in the Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity. Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding. Enterprise Great Lake Taupō (EGLT) is the economic development agency for the Taupō district. Whether you wish to start a business, grow your business, do business or move your business to Taupō, we can help.

Taupō… New Zealand’s next Film Mecca? Fancy seeing yourself on the big screen? Or maybe developing your amateur filmmaking hobby into a career?

E

nterprise Great Lake Taupō have just signed a three-year agreement with Bay of Plenty Film to promote our region as a location for international feature films, as well as providing training and pathways for those wanting to work in the film industry. This new partnership is a key initiative under Enterprise Great Lake Taupō’s new strategic plan, to leverage our natural advantages to create economic benefit for our district. Bay of Plenty Film is a Regional Film office, charged with growing, supporting and strengthening the film industry in the Bay of Plenty. They have three key streams of work. Firstly, they ‘connect’ national and international productions

with our people, place and infrastructure. Secondly, they ‘create’ a film friendly environment where productions thrive; and thirdly, they ‘celebrate’ the stories that find their home here. The Taupō district is already benefiting from the work undertaken by Anton Steel and his team at BOP Film, with a number of feature films now considering including the Taupō region as a location for multi-week film shoots in 2019; hosting a number of international film scouts from a variety of major film production companies; helping us to develop more film friendly permitting and consents processes; supporting and connecting our local film industry; and delivery of career pathway information events.

Plastic Free July has turned into Plastic Free Taupō During the month of July Towncentre Taupō and Taupō District Council challenged locals and business owners to get rid of single use plastic in their daily lives. Assistance was provided by Council in the form of spin-the-wheel prize giveaways of reusable items and workshops on making beeswax wraps and reusable Boomerang Bags, and hundreds of locals participated in these events.

T

owncentre Taupō helped do away with single use plastic bags in the commercial sector by giving businesses a start-up supply of paper bags and encouraging them to use reusable bags whenever possible. Over 40 businesses made the change in July! The end result is Plastic Free Taupō, an environmental initiative to keep the

ead by annual iconic events – The Taupō Summer Concert, IRONMAN New Zealand and the BDO Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge – you could easily be lulled into a sense that Taupo is all about summer activity. But the reality is that the events calendar is now very much year-round. The District’s event strategy focus has, for the past four years, been on developing our shoulder season event offerings and

come this September, that approach will deliver once again. Headlined by the recent announcement by New Zealand Rugby that Taupō will continue to retain the hosting rights of the annual Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19 Rugby Tournament for a further three years, September is literally filled up of sporting, cultural and artistic and exhibition events. Whether you fancy an art exhibition, are in the market to purchase a hunting weapon, want to witness first hand future All Blacks playing or celebrate our Maori heritage – we have you covered. Collectively 18,000 visitors are expected to attend the September events, injecting a combined $3.2 million in direct event spend into the local economy.

6 Reasons Why Spring is the Best Time to Ski Ruapehu!

C

M

Y

By Erin Harrison COP Y WRITER

CM

MY

Just because we’ve said ‘see you later to winter’, it doesn’t mean the ski season is over. In fact, it’s anything but that, with plenty of our regular folks saying that spring brings out the best of the mountain. We think so too, and here’s our top 6 reasons why:

1

The snow goes into a melt/thaw cycle due to warmer days but cold nights, which then rewards us with five-star corn (coarse, granular wet snow that skiers describe as good spring snow).

2

Due to Turoa’s south-west orientation, the sun has less effect on snow surface conditions until late October/November which means you can ski and ride all day without too much sun making conditions soft and slushy.

3

4

Special deals for Spring! Free Ski/ Snowboard rental with every Full Day Lift Pass purchased. Monday – Friday from 10th September until the end of the season (save $49). There will also be weekly specials in the retail shop and on food and beverage combos.

5

The school holidays in September/ October aren’t as busy as July so if you haven’t introduced the kids to the snow, now is the perfect time!

6

The beer tastes better after a hot day skiing and spring skiers have better stories at work on Monday. Just remember your sunscreen. So what are you waiting for? Grab your gear and head on down for stunning blue-sky days, plenty of warmth from the spring sun and amazing snow coverage from the recent top ups. We’re open all the way through to Labour Day on the 22nd October.

14

CY

A typical day involves breakfast and coffee at 9am; skiing from 10am-3pm; a beer in the Schuss Haus before heading back to Taupo to enjoy dinner by the lake. Bliss!

Visit mtruapehu.com or drop in to our Snow Depot on 29 Tongariro Street for more info and to book a snow shuttle. Visit us at our Snow HQ on 32 Roberts Street to grab your rental equipment.

River Wild Raft N Run Race

Looking for a team event that’s outside the box? Rafting New Zealand's River Wild Raft N Run Race takes group bonding, building and orienteering to the next level.

T

he annual November occasion, now in its eighth year, sees participants traverse the stunning Tongariro River on raft, then run – or walk – a section of the Tongariro River Trail. You can be as competitive or non-competitive as you like – no experience required – workmates, friends or family all welcome! “Over the years the River Wild Challenge has sold out on the Saturday so this year we have opened up a second day on the Sunday. It’s a real testament to how popular this event has become,” explains Pianika Boddington of Rafting New Zealand. “You get to experience the Tongariro River in all its glory – the challenge of tumbling rapids and prisitine scenery – plus, you'll run/ walk through some of the most beautiful bush. The location is so accessible. Most people drive past, having never visited the area, and then come back to compete or sightsee again!”

What can we expect on the day?

Teams of five or six gear up riverside for the race which begins just south of Turangi. Teams enter the water in oneminute intervals and raft 16 kilometres down the exhilarating Tongariro River over 60 Grade 3+ rapids – no rafting experience needed as the raft and professional guidance is supplied. Once you reach Red Hut Bridge you drop your lifejackets, wetsuits and helmets and run 8 kilometres along the right-hand side of the Tongariro River Trail, finishing at Turangi Town Centre. “It’s a super fun day out and it's hosted by Karam Fletcher of Tuwharetoa FM – he’s

a brilliant motivator and entertainer,” says Pianika. “At the end of the day we have massagers, hot dogs and a beer waiting for you – bliss!” The impetus behind the inaugural event stemmed from a desire to create a group experience that wasn’t your typical, within a magic setting. “The River Wild Challenge first began in 2011 because we wanted to create a corporate event that would bring people to the Tongariro River and Turangi,” enthuses Pianika. “It is not your normal event. It enables all abilities to get on one of New Zealand’s most beautiful rivers in one of the most stunning locations and experience rafting. It marks the start of our summer spell and is the first weekend back for returning river guides and staff – it set’s the season off with a bang!” For a challenge that’s sure to entertain your adventurous spirit, grab your teammates, an overnight bag and give it a go, encourages Pianika. “I can guarantee you'll be back the following year! Book in quick as there are only few spaces left!”

CHEERS FOR TWENTY YEARS With more than 1200 homes built to-date, there’s no doubt that Penny Homes is one of Taupō’s most successful businesses. It’s a homegrown story we can be proud of, as the company says cheers for 20 years – and looks towards the next 20. By Erin Harrison COP Y WRITER

16

I

n 1998 Kellie and John Penny decided that a rental property or two would be a good investment for their future. So they bought a large, scrub-covered section on the ‘other side’ of the river, and proceeded to build two good-quality houses which they intended to let out. Instead, the homes caught the eye of a local real estate agent who quickly sold them – prompting the couple to buy more land in the same area. Just six years later, Penny Developments (as they were known then) had built 280 homes, with another thousand sets of house keys handed over in the time since.

Prestigious Awards There’s no doubt that the quality of the design and construction is what has helped make Penny Homes a household name in Taupō. And their homes certainly haven’t escaped the eye of New Zealand’s most reputable building awards – the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.

The company has taken out two National Category Winner awards – in 2009 and 2017 – as well as multiple regional awards, proving that they truly know what it takes to build a home to be admired.

A part of the past, present and future Very much a part of Taupō over the past two decades, Penny Homes has made its mark on the town’s landscape. From building a new ‘home’ for the Lake Taupō Coastguard in 2005, to constructing all of the residential properties in the Brentwood development, the business is also making itself well-known in the big cities of Wellington and Auckland. And the company is extremely proud to be one of the first providers of new homes which come under the Government’s KiwiBuild affordable housing programme – giving families currently locked out of the Auckland housing market an opportunity to purchase their own home.

Kellie and John are still involved in the day-to-day running of operations, with significant plans to continue growing the success of Penny Homes and become New Zealand’s number one home build company. To mark the occasion of such a significant milestone, Penny Homes has also undergone a refresh of its visual identity. With the aim to better represent the company’s high standard of quality and who they are today, a new website and brand update has kickstarted the next twenty year chapter. And if their achievements to-date are anything to go by, there really is no stopping the team at Penny Homes – 100 per cent Made in Taupō.

BUILT TO BE ADMIRED Latest release of Home & Land Packages in Taupo The sought-after neighbourhood of Penny Grove, Brentwood, has been designed for efficient and easy living with a sunny outlook and views over Lake Taupo. The Biggest Roadblock to Business Success By Daniel Britten DIREC TOR

Have you ever said you will do something - either in your business or personal life - only to watch another year pass and nothing changes? This is 95% more likely to happen if you only have yourself to be accountable to.

L

ack of accountability in small business owners is one of the biggest factors holding people back from improving their business. It is relatively easy to make your team accountable to you, but it is often harder to make yourself accountable to someone ... which consequently stops a lot of small business owners from doing much to improve their business. There are around 400,000 SME’s in New Zealand with 70% of these being small, one-man-bands, often with only their husbands or wives to talk to about anything – which can be challenging at

the best of times. As outlined in a recent Herald article, around 80% of SME’s identified isolation as one of their biggest problems in business. So whether it be a mentor, a mate, or your accountant, having someone to talk to, challenge you, ask questions and to ultimately hold you to account for improving your business, is one of the most important elements for success in a small business. This should be someone that can help you remove yourself from the short-term running of your business and shift your mindset to one of a longerterm strategy. One of the most critical functions is to establish strategies and a long-term perspective to help you establish, improve and execute a plan.

Watch your business thrive Businesses in the Taupō region are no exception to this issue and typify the traditional SME in NZ. Although it can be hard to open up to others about your business, Taupō has great support networks available to small businesses who put their hands up for it. For example, Enterprise Great Lake Taupō (EGLT) run a great business mentor network, which has a diverse range of mentors available to help out in different industries. This has also become a real focus area of ours at Strettons, as we see an increased number of businesses – both young and old – identify the need for help to set longterm strategies, be held accountable and ultimately, watch their businesses thrive.

Thinking of Selling? Methods of Sale to Suit your Home By Rachael Webber

CHOOSE US TO BE YOUR I.T DEPARTMENT. WE COME TO YOU!

O

ne of the questions I get asked most often by my vendors is ‘which method of sale would best suit the sale of my home?’ Of course, every property is unique, as is every marketplace – so arming yourself with knowledge of what the various options are is an essential component in achieving a maximum sales result for your home.

Advertised Price The most straight-forward way to sell a property, potential buyers will know what price you are looking for and negotiate from there. Deadline Sale and By Negotiation These two options are similar, and are often used when it is difficult to estimate the market value of a property, as no price is advertised. A deadline sale has a date in which offers need to be in

by, and the vendor reserves the right to accept an offer and sell prior.

Tender A process rather like a silent auction, buyers don't know who they are in competition with, so submit their best offer which is kept confidential. These are presented to the vendor on a set day at a set time all together, and the best option usually secures the property. Auction Owners can be hesitant to use the auction process, but it is the purchasers who experience the most stress! Owners are in control and choose the reserve price. The property will only be sold if an unconditional bid is equal to – or above – the reserve price. If you are considering selling your property, please contact me to discuss how best to market your home to achieve a top result.

DIGITAL MARKETING

HELPING CUSTOMERS FIND YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS W

hat exactly is ‘digital marketing’? It basically covers all types of marketing that businesses do online – from websites, to SEO (search engine optimisation), Google Ads, social media, blogs and more. For those who are still adjusting to what being online means, it can be rather overwhelming. But as they say, the best way to get something done is to begin.

22

More than 80 per cent of consumers do research online before making a purchase decision – which is pretty much everyone, right? They read reviews, compare prices, download information and check out company websites – all before even getting in touch with a business. So are you putting your best foot forward online? By Erin Harrison

COP Y WRITER

All customers go on a journey – map it To better understand how to capture more customers, it’s a good idea to find out how your current ones made it to you, and why they decided to buy from you, and not your competitors. This is called a customer journey – with your business as the end destination! Plenty of businesses have also clued into the benefit of ‘gently guiding’ customers

with their decision-making process, by offering free, informative content that adds value to their journey – this could be things like eBooks, whitepapers, how-to guides, infographics, webinars, checklists and more. It's about being helpful, without the ‘pushy sales’ aspect, and letting them know you’re there if they need further information.

How can you improve your online presence? The world is a big place, and the internet is even bigger. Unfortunately you can’t just rely solely on your website alone to bring you new leads – especially if it is not optimised correctly to help people ‘find you’. Ranking in Google is key to improving your website visibility, and this can be achieved through a number of ways, for example: knowing the keywords potential customers are searching for – and using them correctly in your content, ensuring your metadata is complete and regularly updating a blog with relevant content. Creating engaging social media channels is also important, as is ensuring your communication is appropriate, that you’re quick to respond to requests and that people are easily able to find what they are looking for. You can also pay for greater ‘discoverability’ with Google Ads, Facebook advertising and remarketing – just to name a few.

Remember the journey we were talking about? This is about considering what people ‘feel’ when they interact with your business. By using digital marketing in the right way, you have the ability to influence decisions – which is often based on an emotional response to your online presence. If someone likes what they see and read, they are more likely to buy from you.

Consistency is key Other kinds of marketing and advertising (print, radio, signage etc.) are definitely not obsolete – in fact they are a very nice accompaniment to online. Potential customers often need at least three ‘exposures’ to a brand and/or product before being engaged with it, so a variety of touchpoints is crucial. But here’s the key to this aspect being successful – it must always be consistent. Whatever appears in a magazine, newspaper, on a display ad, or any other marketing activity, it must provide the target audience with the same message, look and feel.

I love travel. I live and breath it. Where have I been? Not quite everywhere, but almost – 31 countries and counting. The biggest tip I give my clients is to take out travel insurance. Buy it as soon as you put any money towards a holiday, because it means that you’re covered for the time before the trip, and any unforeseen circumstances will be insured. Until I became a travel agent I never realised the value of booking with someone who does it for a living! I really thought I could do it better myself online – but you just can't. The airfares, hotels, tours and cruises that agents have access to is MORE than what is available online. I can take care of it all for you, and I am an expert when it comes to difficult airfares. I love a bargain, so I am here to put together the best possible trip at the best possible price. If you find a good deal yourself, let me know and I will try my best to beat or better it! Bring your ideas to me and I will help you build the holiday of your dreams!

Empower Ltd is about helping you to find ‘the right connection’ for your insurance needs and the insurance company that can provide you with the best solution. I relocated from Auckland to service existing clients in Taupō and to assist more families with their insurance needs. As well as being an insurance broker, I am also a KiwiSaver specialist. The majority of my work consists of reviewing clients existing insurances and understanding whether I am able to provide them with better cover at a more competitive premium. Following this appraisal, a comprehensive quote from each insurance company is presented. This is a free service and once you are insured with the right company, I will continue to work alongside you to assist when insurance claims are required. I am very passionate about tailoring the right insurance covers for you – understanding that no one client has the same requirements as the next.

I joined the Taupō Golf Club team in 2017 as the Operations Manager – Golf. Golf has been a big part of my life a since the age of 14. It's a great sport that can be played throughout your life and this is one of its major strengths I believe. I have travelled and played golf in Europe, Asia, America, South America and Australasia. Research shows that humans need to interact with the natural environment for health and wellbeing and golf is such a great way of doing this. I love nothing more than helping people new to sport enjoy both the game of golf and the social camaraderie of others. If you are a local business that is looking to run an event for your clients and / or staff, we have options to support your event. Have fun playing Footgolf, Driving Range competitions, 6-hole games, 9-hole games or for the more experienced players a choice of two 18-hole golf courses. For the novices I would highly recommend our “give golf a go” sessions.

Our Prostate Reality ...

Speak out this Blue September

I

Annually, over 600 Kiwi men die at the hands of prostate cancer. Blue September is the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand’s national awareness campaign – spreading the word and seeking support. 33Thirty spoke to Ken Wells, a prostate cancer battler, who shares his experience and journey to-date.

didn’t ‘feel’ like I had cancer,” says Ken. “I’ve had 35 years of martial arts and endurance walks – I thought my body would always do what I wanted.” One of biggest circulating myths is that prostate cancer is slow growing, however, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 29 types of prostate cancer have been discovered, “Of those there are prostate cancers a man may die with and not of, while others are very aggressive.” “I felt fine, but on the Gleeson Scale my cancer was an eight out of ten and fast growing,” says Ken.

Reaching out Whilst research is helpful, it’s the support of those closest that Ken values most. “For men especially, something like this has a huge psychological and emotional impact,” he says. “Side effects of prostate surgery are incontinence and erectile dysfunction – it’s daunting.” Ensuring his physical and mental health were up to speed before surgery was essential, says Ken.

“We sat down as a family and discussed all the possible outcomes and the journey ahead,” he explains. “I cut all dairy, gluten, sugar and meat and went into surgery feeling fantastic.”

Taking stock Various studies have coined a link between meat and dairy consumption and an increase in prostate cancer risk. For example, the Physician Health Study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, states: “A high calcium intake, mainly from dairy products, may increase prostate cancer risk by lowering concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3], a hormone thought to protect against prostate cancer.” No matter the research, taking stock of your diet is the best thing you can do if diagnosed, believes Ken. “I’m not prepared to just take a few pills. Battling prostate cancer isn’t a quick fix, it’s about positive measures to keep moving forward.” There's more! Continue reading at 33Thirty.nz

Over 600 participants take part in a range of educational activities. We cover a series of topics including the ‘Fundamentals of Palliative Care’ which encompasses the essence of palliative care. This includes discussions around ethical issues, pain and symptom management, caring for people with lifelimiting chronic conditions and dementia, communication skills, caring in the last days of life, loss and grief, caring for yourself and spiritual care. We also teach medication management, syringe driver/pump skills and health care assistant skills, as well as practical things like massage, bed-bathing and safe transferring of people in bed and around the house.

Lake Taupo Hospice is proud to facilitate the National Palliative Care lecture series and Waikato Hospital Palliative Specialist sessions for health professionals. We are also involved in, and co-present, the Palliative Medicine Specialist specific education sessions for doctors and registered nurses across the community. This year we were very privileged to educate, support and share our resources with Dr. Dave Nixon and Registered Nurse Kate Nixon in their mission to Buhtan, in Asia, with the aim of supporting the advancement of palliative care there. Want More ‘Spring’ in Your Step? By Kathy Moore HE A LTH COACH

W

e can show you how to implement five simple, yet effective, principles into your day-to-day life that will provide you with greater energy, balance and focus – so you can feel restored and renewed.

1. Practice relaxation Slowing down is key – learn to take your time when you eat. Breathe deeply, as more oxygen means more calorie burning power, more effective digestion and greater nutrient uptake.

2. Quality of food The 80 / 20 rule is great to live by and takes the pressure off trying to be perfect – 80% health-enhancing food, and 20% for all the other choices. You can use it per plate, per day or per week.

3. Become ‘aware’ Choose to be present when you eat. Take the time to notice colours, smells, Want to make an even greater change to your health and wellbeing? Contact one of the health coaches at Bodyworx Fitness and Health at 07 378 1115. 32

textures and the environment you are eating in – where is your focus? Engage your mind and use the power of its awareness to get the most out of your food.

Wedding Services Cuts & Colours Hair Treatment Eye Treatments Spray Tanning Eyelash Extensions Waxing Treatments

4. Follow a rhythm Eat regularly; learn how to balance your protein, carbohydrates, fats and water intake. Plan your meals. Find the rhythm that works for you - experiment with all types of food!

5. Take pleasure from food Write a list of healthenhancing food that you get pleasure from, and a list of ‘forbidden’ foods that you get pleasure from – this is the information you use for your food plan, keeping in mind the 80 / 20 rule.

HEALTHY HEALTHY GUT LIFE! Gut Instinct ... Restoring the Balance

BERNADINE OLIVER-KERBY

As the weather warms and the silly season nears, stress levels can rise and with them an increase in digestive issues – most commonly effecting women.

A

n excess of bad gut bacteria – such as candida – can make us feel tired, bloated, foggy and anxious. Gastro health is not something we first consider, but gastrointestinal disorders affect 35% to 70% of people at some point in life – and more often females, reports the Harvard Medical School.

It’s all in the gut Not all bacteria are created equal. “Good” gut bacteria aid digestion, strengthen our immune system and produce the vitamins our body needs. “Bad” gut bacteria can cause digestive troubles and lead to serious health issues like leaky gut syndrome and IBS. How does stress impact on our microbiota? The mind-gut connection is a topic that’s been readily explored. The Enteric Nervous System, connects our brain and digestive system – the ‘braingut axis’ – streaming messages between the two. 95% of our body’s serotonin – the hormone that helps control mood, sleep and appetite – is found in the gut, not the brain. When stress hormones flood our body, the digestive system effectively shuts down, causing muscles to contract less – or more – frequently, prompting gastric excretions and stomach acid levels to increase or decrease, resulting in changes to healthy bacteria composition.

Biotic balance With festive madness all around we may instinctively reach for sugar, fat, caffeine or alcohol which can worsen digestive issues. Eating probiotic and prebiotic foods that target and support our good bacteria can help to restore balance. “Prebiotics directly and indirectly modulate the immune system and reduce the risk and severity of bowel infectious and inflammatory conditions,” reports Michael Conlon in his article ‘The Impact of Diet and Lifestyle on Gut Microbiota and Human Health’. However, you don’t need to consume huge quantities to reap daily biotic benefits. “Try to eat something fermented daily, for example, coconut yoghurt for breakfast. Seaweed added to meals is rich in prebiotics which are essentially food for probiotics,” says Monika Vincent, director of Raw Balance, Taupō. “Our favourite probiotic is coconut kefir. A bottle will last you a number of days and the impact is amazing!” Exercising the mind and body is also essential for a happy gut. “Yoga is great because it strengthens the body, stretches muscles and promotes better breathing,” says Monika. “Conscious deep breathing is relaxing, de-stressing and a fantastic way to oxygenate the body.”

blitz

As we start to peel off the layers, now’s the time to step up and address matters – body matters that is. 33Thirty got down to business researching mindful measures, key eating tips and spoke to New Zealand fitness guru and performance nutritionist Lee-Anne Wann about gearing up for the festive season with a workout plan that won’t exhaust beyond the first day.

work it ... short and simple

T

o achieve great tone and condition and lose body fat it’s not about how long you do things but how often you do them and the intensity with which you do them,” says Lee-Anne. Aim for ‘Specific Continuous Activation’ to tone and condition certain areas of the body, she advises. “When you’re short on time but want to achieve great results activate chosen body areas / muscles on a continuous basis so they’re always working.”

For further info on Lee-Anne’s programme visit her Facebook page at www.leeannewann.com/bodydesign 34

Target Area:

Target Area:

Back of arms: tricep Dips

Buttocks

This is super easy to do at home – position palms on edge of chair, bring feet together and lift butt to position in front of the chair, keeping back straight. Gently lower yourself up and down, be sure to focus on bending the elbows to do the movement rather than hunching the shoulders to target the area.

Often this area is one we can struggle with because it has not been activated properly. Lie on your back with knees bent and lift your hips off the ground until you cannot go any higher – hold for a moment and then lower down. Ensure you squeeze all the way to the top of the movement and hold before lowering again and repeating.

Frequency: Daily Duration: 20 to 40 seconds, as you get better aim for 60 seconds non-stop

Frequency: Daily Duration: 15 to 30 seconds, increase to 45 seconds non-stop

Burn Body Fat

Again, super easy to do at home, but the key with this exercise is to start on your knees to allow you to do the movement fully and correctly. Drop your hips to the ground and keep your back nice and straight.

Frequency: Every second day Duration: Between 8 and 20 minutes

Frequency: Daily Duration: 15 to 30 seconds, as you get better aim for 45 seconds non-stop

3. Cycle sprints: 8 seconds pedalling fast or 12 seconds slow – repeat for between 8 and 20 minutes.

1. Walk or run for 1 minute. 2. Hill sprints: Sprint up a hill for 8 to 12 seconds and walk down – repeat for between 8 and 20 minutes.

mindful measures ... curb the cravings

W

ith an exercise plan tucked under the belt, now it’s about taking mindful steps towards channelling goodness from the inside out. Mindful eating isn’t about calorie counting, rather creating an awareness of what’re putting into our mouths.

Think upon it: • Pause before you take a bite and listen to your body’s cues – is it hunger or thirst? • Identify your hunger pangs. Emotional driven hunger comes on quickly – need burger now! Real physical hunger comes on slowly and can be felt in the stomach – not with the eyes! • Eat when you feel like eating and not when the clock says to – don’t be bound to three meals a day. • Slow down the chewing. Eating too quickly has been linked to weight gain in studies and type-2 diabetes, reports The Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

“when looking at burning body fat – the secret is to keep it short and intense, aim for no more than 20 minutes of exercise that breaks a sweat" – Lee-Anne

eat speak ... keeping it real We should all aim for a healthy combination of diet and exercise no matter our body goals. To turn up the dial on weight loss or to reboot your digestive system for summer, think fresh, simple and within reach food choices. Daily doables: • Wake up with water – aim for 500ml. Try adding a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar to stimulate your digestive system. • Feed your inner prebiotics! Prebiotics stock fibres that probiotics love to feast on, so they help move things through our digestive system and keep us bloat-free. Think veges such as asparagus, spinach, kale, leeks, garlic, avocados and onions. • Changeup your noodles! Try spiralizing carrot, zucchini, beetroot or squash as a substitute for pasta. • Add a touch of spice to your dish, dip or marinade. The compound capsaicin – found in chilli peppers – has been linked to weight loss. • Give meals and your body a boost with fresh herbs. Oregano and coriander in particular have been toted for speeding up the metabolism and dissolving fat. • If it’s belly fat you’re wanting to shift, superfoods such as walnuts, black pepper and beans have all been given the thumbs up.

SETTING SIGHTS NEAR AND FAR

FORWARD THINKING AND FUTURE PROOFING

here’s more than meets your eye when it comes to Taupō optometrist Sophie Woodburn. The enterprising visionary not only serves our local community, but is also gearing up to aid others across the globe. “This October I’ll be joining a team of eight and venturing to Nepal where we’ll be helping local communities, schools and hospitals through the Eyes for Everest programme,” she explains. Sophie and her team will spend a month providing optometry services to all ages in villages up and around Mount Everest. “I’m looking forward to experiencing a new culture and especially visiting the local schools. I just hope I can keep up with all the trekking!” A passion for people extends to Sophie’s life beyond the lens. She helps manage The Taupō Young Professionals Group, which aims to connect young people moving into the Taupō region. “We organise a monthly get-together and try to host a bigger event quarterly – such as a BYO dinner, and last year we had a group ski event,” she says. “It’s a good way for people to network, form friendships and socialise. We’re in our sixth year and we’re steadily seeing new faces into the area – especially this year – so it’s nice to be able to reach out and provide opportunities to welcome them.”

here’s there’s new and innovative technology at play, you’ll find Laura Hornsey and her class at its centre. The Tauhara primary teacher – and self-confessed IT nerd – is not afraid of stepping outside the box when it comes to testing and trying the latest and greatest in gadgets and technologies – including robots. “Currently, I have my class working with Bee-Bots and Wonder-Bots,” she says. “They’re designed to help with maths and geometry. For example, one day the class designed mazes with compass points and the next day we programmed the robots to produce the same mazes using coding. It’s exciting times!” Whilst Laura doesn’t deem herself a technology expert, it’s her drive to introduce the new and never-before to the students of Tauhara Primary, that’s earnt her a ‘go-getter’ title amongst her peers – and she’s the youngest member of staff. “I introduced lunchtime drama workshops for the middle and senior school this year because my class really thrive on it and we had a few others knocking on our door,” she says. “I’ve always had a passion for the arts, so being able to involve students in an area they might not have ever considered – and simply provide them with another outlet for creative expression – is so rewarding.

The leaves of our native Harakeke or bush flax are perfect for weaving and its seed branch is soft inside and hard outside making it perfect for boat making.

FLAX BOATS

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED: * A flax leaf * A length of flax wood * 6 wooden skewers * Pocket knife * A piece of sand paper * Ruler

STEP 3 Next strengthen the boat further by putting two more skewers diagonally across the corners of the bottom. You will find they crisscross in the middle of the boat - the perfect place for the mast to stand.

STEP 1 Using your knife cut two 25 cm flax wood lengths - about 3 to 4 cm thick. These are the hulls of the boat. Now sandpaper the ends till smooth.

STEP 2 Using meat skewers, make three holes along the inside of each flax wood hull. Join them across to make the strong bottom part of the boat.

STEP 4 For the mast, cut two small pieces or plugs - of spare flax wood. Push one a little way up a spare skewer. Sit your mast in the crisscross hole made in the middle bottom of your boat. Place the other plug under the boat to hold the mast tightly in place from both sides.

STEP 5 Now the boat frame is complete, start on your sail. Taking your flax leaf, cut it into short pieces that can be threaded through your mast pole.

FOR THE GREATER GOOD Sustainable Gardening Warmer days and longer nights allow more time spent outdoors and engaging our green fingers. A call to garden can be a complete redevelopment, a freshening up of landscape or a turn at planting new species and shrubs. Whatever your endeavour, we dug out some sustainable gardening tips from those in the know to help lift your yard and inspire a fresh take on methods and means.

“Planting basil with tomatoes also improves the flavour of the tomatoes and repels flies and mosquitoes,” says Emma.

FEEDING SOIL AND CONSERVING RESOURCES

S

ustainable gardening isn’t just a process, it’s a journey or movement. Sustainable practices go beyond using organic sprays and mulch, they consider water and energy conservation, waste reduction, smart-seed sourcing and smart-tree planting. Sustainability promotes forward thinking with an ethos to preserve and to protect.

WHERE TO BEGIN? The average Kiwi lawn size is shrinking. Gone are the days when a central plot of grass dominated and plants were designated to borders and edgings. Today’s sustainable design approach means working a space to your best advantage and planning ahead, advises Emma Kunac of Taupō’s Girls on Grass. “Look at the garden as a whole and start with what you have. It can be as simple as moving plants around to reduce maintenance time,” she says. “Weeds need light so filling up your garden reduces light to the soil thus reducing weeds,” she says. Also consider: • Building or creating paths with recycled or environmentally-friendly building materials. • How multi-functional is your space, i.e. does it incorporate lowmaintenance features and utilise balconies, terraces etc? • Are your plant choices going to require extra pruning? “Go up! You can make a tree do what you want, and training up a stake or fence can make a space feel bigger,” says Emma. “Take the sparky off you contacts list too! Solar lights are all go!”

Supporting your soil means supporting your plants. Soil can lose up to 70% of water on a hot day – especially without a protective layer on top.

WHAT SHOULD I PLANT? Every area has plants that are best suited to its micro-climate, so it’s wise to plant to the conditions. “The Taupō / Waikato region is renowned for its harsher soil conditions and pumice prevails – which makes for good drainage,” says Robyn Ellis, co-ordinator of Greening Taupō. “With our restoration planting in parks and corridors we plant mostly natives that are hardy and attract the native birds.” Greening Taupō’s native tree planting picks for bird-friendly local gardeners, include: Cook Strait Kowhai, Green Mistletoe, Harakeke Flax, Kaka Beak and Puawhanaga Clematis. If you're looking for pops of colour, there are options aplenty, says Emma of Girls on Grass. “Think Rhododendron, Azalea, Port Wine Magnolia and Lavender,” she says. “For structure, think Miniature Toi Toi, Pittosporum Golf Ball, Coprosma Red Rocks, Corokia, Teucrium Fruiticans and Carex.” Vege speak, edibles to turn a hand to, include: Garden peas (ideal for a fence/ tepee), Lettuce (plant in a shady spot and add a few seeds every week for constant crop) and Kale (a bumper crop can be frozen down).

Mulch: One of the best moisture barriers – and weed suppressors – you can employ. Aim for a courser mulch that allows water to permeate down to the soil – old recycled cardboard and shredded newspaper also make a great spread. “Some of our tree planting involves using wool carpet as a protective layer,” explains Robyn. “Not only do these offcuts naturally breakdown but they prevent the weeds from coming through and smothering the trees.” Feed: Kelp, seaweed and compost all encourage plant growth by releasing microorganisms into the soil. Enriching your soil with nutrients sourced as close to home as possible is apt too. Coffee grounds can be collected from local coffee shops or gas stations – and they’re ideal for pumicetype soils because they break down slowly. Try turning all your vegetable and fruit peelings and trimmings into compost and maintain a consistent turnover of compost by creating a twobin composting system. For example, one bin contains broken-down materials from last season, and bin number two is fermenting for the season ahead – just as BK Contracting do!

BK Contracting’s Composting Know-how: The team at BK Contracting have composting down to a fine art – from reuse, to construction, to filling, to final product – here’s how they do it ... • First, we build our compost bins using recycled railway sleepers for the three sides and untreated recycled timber for the removable front drawers. • Then, we put a divider in the middle so we can fill one side and use the compost from the other.

• To start the composting process, we add all our grass clippings and leaves etc, then our food scraps – minus any meat and bones which deters rodents and doesn’t break down as quickly. • We always try to cover food scraps with grass clipping because this quickens the composting process. • Our compost is ready to use on the garden approximately two months after the bin is filled. Happy composting!
