Taupō Awarded Rights to Host 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship
T
his will be the first time IRONMAN® holds a world championship event in New Zealand and the second time this world-class event has been hosted in the Oceania region. The event will also move from its traditional late Augustearly September race date and will now take place on November 28-29, 2020 with the women racing on Saturday and the men racing on Sunday. This shift will take advantage of New Zealand’s peak time of year with mild temperatures in their late spring early summer months. “We are pleased to bring the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship back to the Oceania region,” says Andrew Messick, CEO and President of IRONMAN. “Taupō is a unique and beautiful destination with a local community that has embraced IRONMAN events and the thousands of athletes for 20 years now. We are excited to welcome some of the world’s most elite triathletes to what will no doubt be a fantastic world championship event.” Athletes will have the chance to qualify for the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon at over 110 global qualifying events in locations such as Austria, China, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and the Americas.
“In IRONMAN circles, this is equivalent to the Rugby World Cup or Americas Cup, so we have the opportunity to deliver something really special,” says District Events Manager Steve Giles. “This will give our community a chance to not only volunteer in an international event, but also to showcase our district like never before.”
The Hub Update is brought to you by
Tourism Development Funding for Taupō District The New Zealand Government has allocated $3 billion over a three-year term to invest in regional economic development through the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF).
D
estination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT), the Hub agencies and Taupō District Council are working in partnership to secure funding, with a two-fold shared vision of sustainable year-round growth for our visitor industry, as well as mitigating the pressures on our current tourism infrastructure. There are several collaborative PGF applications in the pipeline for the Taupō district, one of which is a business case for Taupō Airport and the establishment of a plan to ensure this gateway to the region is fit for purpose and equipped to deal with increasing visitor numbers over the next 10 years. Modern facilities, new
services and a larger capacity will enable increased visitation and the attraction of additional high-value visitors – bringing opportunity to a wide array of businesses and operators throughout the district. The district recently obtained funding from the Central Government Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF), which enabled the upgrade of the facilities at Otumuheke Stream in Spa Thermal Park to cope with increased visitation and to protect the environment from further degradation. In 2017, TIF funding was secured for further feasibility work for Hipapatua (Reid’s Farm) and the management of this iconic freedom camping spot. In 2019,
further funding will be sought to establish the important reserve and ensure that it is protected and utilised appropriately. The recent announcement of an international visitor levy, with funding available to support tourism development, means further potential to seek funding for “pressure points” in the region that will require either an upgrade or establishment of infrastructure. Government will be taking a ‘super regional’ focus when distributing this funding so partnerships across local boundaries will be required to ensure a seamless visitor experience for our guests. Securing funding enables us as a region to kick-start investment and facilitate growth around some of our key tourism assets as well as improve upon current infrastructure, which will be beneficial to locals and visitors alike.
Talent Thrives in Taupō Taupō is proving an appealing and popular choice for those wishing to pursue their career in a more relaxed provincial environment.
E
nterprise Great Lake Taupō has recently launched www.Taupo.Jobs – an online portal dedicated to assisting local employers find new staff whilst
also providing plenty of information and support for those looking to move to Taupō for work. Some of the job roles on the website are promoted via social media, digital advertising and radio campaigns to attract applicants, providing employers with an opportunity to put their job advert in front of people who may otherwise never see it. Employers can list a job for free at any stage. A series of national marketing to encourage job-seekers to check out the website is underway, with more than 60,000 people engaging in the digital adverts after the first week. With an estimated 1,600 brand new additional jobs to be created in the Taupō district over the next five years, we expect to see more and more people moving here for both lifestyle and career.

REUSE RETURN REDEEM Taupō's Sip in a New Direction Remember those days when spotting a piece of rubbish wasn’t an every minute occurrence? When a visit to the recycling depot was a monthly excursion and pumice and stones were what you took home after a trip to the lake front? Many Kiwis will. However, with litter problems escalating countrywide, it’s not about sitting back and remembering days of old, but confronting our wastage with new long-term measures to ensure a greener future.
W
e spoke to the ninetyblack team who are coalescing with the Taupō District Council to introduce a new environmental initiative and loyalty programme to Taupō – OneCup. Brewing the new, espressing a little of the old and adding a sprinkle of incentives for local businesses, this reusable takeaway coffee cup directive is destined for great things. From reducing New Zealand’s landfill waste, creating improved sustainable and long-term cup cycling within the community, and enabling Partner Cafés to attract and retain new customers. Let’s lift the lid on a few cup truths and take closer inspection of what OneCup’s set to serve ...
14
The problem Our thirst for drinks on the run results in over 295 million takeaway coffee cups falling to landfill every year in New Zealand. However, it’s not just landfills suffering cup overload, our waterways are choking on our throwaways, with accumulated plastic damaging our marine ecosystem and becoming part of the marine food chain. However, replacing all plastic with compostable cups isn’t the answer to protecting our environment either. Afterall, the majority of compostable vessels still end up in landfills due to a lack of available compostable rubbish bins in New Zealand.
And, not all problems are remedied by destroying takeaway cups altogether and forcing customers to bring their own to cafés. Why? Not only are BYO mugs or cups larger to hike around, it’s easy to forget them when dashing out the door. Let’s be fair, putting all responsibility on the customer isn’t a viable long-term plan-of-attack either.
The OneCup cycle – how it works:
Order your coffee in the reusable OneCup for a $2 deposit
Enjoy your drink on the go
Meet the solution: OneCup Starting up in Taupō in February, OneCup is a green initiative and environmentally friendly loyalty programme, operated by a simple deposit system. Serving up a district-wide cup cycling venture to combat single-cup use, may be just the long-term green solution we are all – cafés and customers – in want of, enthuses Taupō Mayor, David Trewavas. “Projects like this help people get more engaged, help increase awareness of the issues, and ultimately reduce the amount of waste we send to landfills,” he says. “We all have a part in looking after the place we love and this great initiative will give us all a quick and easy way to do our bit and minimise the environmental footprint in our community. As a council, one of our key aims is ensuring our rubbish and recycling is managed in a safe, efficient and sustainable way as we head towards becoming the most liveable and prosperous district in the North Island by 2022.”
Get your takeaway coffee in a OneCup Here's how it works: Pay a $2 deposit with your coffee purchase at any Partner Café and you’ve already reduced waste. After you’ve enjoyed your drink you have two choices: return the cup and redeem your deposit or hand it in and get a fresh coffee in a fresh new OneCup! The best news – no big spend on your own reusable cup, and no washing for you! Check www.onecup.nz to see if your favourite Taupō café is part of the Partner Café network yet. Is it not? Then nominate it to become one.
LAUNCHING IN TAUPŌ
February 2019 Find all Partner Cafés at onecup.nz

Connect with OneCup Why steer the community in a new cup direction? Because sometimes you just need someone to start, say the team at ninetyblack. Driving this programme isn’t just about a great new product, it’s about future planning for the planet and the people of Taupō. To jump onboard OneCup’s six-month trial, reach out to ninetyblack – they’re on hand for all OneCup matters. For less than the price of a coffee per day, they’ll help you set up, implement and educate your team from beginning to end – including promo kit supplies and delivery of 150 OneCups to get you started. They’ll also take care of any cup redistribution and refund any outstanding deposit money.

Skydiving
When I said ‘yes’ to the opportunity to do a skydive, it was such a spur-of-themoment reaction, that I didn’t really consider what I had signed myself up for. It wasn’t till a little later that I thought ‘am I crazy?’
I
arrived at Taupō Tandem Skydiving secretly thinking maybe it would be too windy to dive – but it wasn’t, and it was time to go. As I suited up, I had a bit of an out-ofbody experience. I was paired with an instructor called Hamish and was relieved to hear he has over 20 years skydiving experience – phew! Hamish reassured me all would be well and to sit back, watch the safety video, and enjoy the perfect skydiving conditions. I also recall seeing a man in his late 70’s gearing up for a skydive behind me. That’s when I knew that if he could do it, so could I!
Up, up and away! On take-off it actually felt like a regular flight for the first couple of minutes, and I almost forgot what I was about to do because the scenery was so breathtaking.

I was second in line to jump and watching the first diver’s reaction was terrifying – I’ll admit it. So, when it was my turn to stand at the door, I knew I just couldn’t look down. Even though I was strapped to Hamish (he was actually the one sitting on the edge of the plane, while I was effectively dangling out of it) it didn’t make it any less scary! In the final minutes before jumping I remember thinking, “Just hurry up and jump already!” The suspense was really getting to me and I do think that this part of the journey was the scariest – sitting and waiting to fall.
What goes up, must come down The free fall was nothing I had ever experienced before. I did have a moment of pure panic when I thought, “What have I done?” But after that I couldn’t stop smiling and was trying to look around and take in as much as possible before it was all over. It was one of the most ‘freeing’ feelings ever. When the parachute came out it was quite a heavy jolt and made a loud flapping noise as it unravelled. After that, everything went quiet and a huge sense of accomplishment came over me. In my opinion, the view made the whole thing so worth it. I couldn’t believe I could see all the way over to Mt Taranaki! I also got a better idea of the sheer size of Lake Taupō – it’s huge. Once we landed on the ground, I was really proud to have gone through with something so crazy. I feel like I can really conquer anything after completing that! So, if skydiving is on your bucket list, I definitely recommend ticking it off.

Into the Groove ... Mind speak for the working week There’s nothing quite like holidaying Kiwi style and come December most of us are hanging out for that change in pace and routine. However, heading back into work mode or a new school term, can conjure feelings of dread and anxiety.
S
o, how do we spring back into action minus a bout of the blues? We sleep longer, have fun and connect more!
Channel your natural rhythm When holidaying we slumber longer, act and eat differently, and our social clock aligns itself closer to that of our biological clock – sleep in longer, stay up later. As leading researcher of chronobiology, Tim Roenneberg reveals in his paper ‘Social Jetlag: misalignment of biological and social time’ published by the US National Library of Medicine, many of us are out of tune with our chronotypes and natural circadian. What this means for work? Waking up to a 7am alarm – or earlier – means we’re destined to feel tired and sluggish with slower reaction times. Whilst beginning the work day later may not be an option, getting outside more can provide a boost in sunlight that can steer us towards an earlier sleep time.
Keep holidaying Kickstarting work mode doesn’t mean saying goodbye to all things fun – in fact fun should top the list all year round, says life coach and business mentor, Dawn Kiddie. “Unfortunately, a lot of people can’t see beyond the nine-to-five, Mondayto-Friday mindset when on the working wheel,” she says. “But we shouldn’t railroad ourselves into thinking this way – we need to stop making excuses.” Putting greater emphasis on making next year’s holiday plans or ‘treat’ occasions well in advance of the Christmas break, puts a positive spin on heading back to work in the New Year. “In my opinion we put too much emphasis on getting that one decent Christmas break – we ‘need’ it. When what we actually ‘need’ we should be getting throughout the rest of the year too,” she
explains. “We need to learn to go our own ways – plan a mid-week holiday in May, plan the camping trip for March instead of January – do for you.”
Connect outwardly Connecting with others in and outside the work space also keeps us positively moving forward, recommends the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. As one of its five steps to wellbeing – connect, give, take notice, keep learning and be active – connecting with people is not only intrinsic to our daily thought patterning and feelings, but also our physical health. A meta study of 148 studies (with over 300,000 participants) showed that the individuals with greater social relationships had a 50% increased likelihood of survival. 23
Benefits of Cloud Computing By Daniel Wilks
OWNER , HELP I.T.
T
he main benefits of migrating your business functions to the Cloud means that resources can be scaled up and down at a subscription cost, rather than a large upfront cost. Risk is reduced heavily by having resources managed and maintained off site, so there are no unknown bills coming in when the server crashes or is in need of an upgrade. Of course, security is a major concern for many businesses. And when your business works in the Cloud, it’s also important to make sure you are protected with managed virus protection and managed firewall devices. Both of which we can talk to you about, to ensure you have the correct protection in place to reduce risk and downtime.
Cloud enables your staff to access and work from anywhere, anytime, resulting in increased productivity, flexibility and creativity. We have found this opens doors and opportunities for businesses, as it helps keep you relevant and moving with the times.
Upgrade your business to the Cloud At Help I.T. we don’t just provide a service but a complete solution. Our expertise directs the best way forward for your business and the migration to complete the solution with minimal downtime. Not only this, Help I.T. can provide a range of solutions: point of sale, monitored and proactive surveillance camera systems and more.

Changes are coming to payroll – are you compliant? By Joanna More
CLIENT SER V ICE S M A N AGER
Keeping up with the constantly evolving world of business can be hard so it’s no surprise people are seeking help to ensure they are complaint in all areas – including payroll. The IRD has begun to reach out about the upcoming changes which have generated questions and uncertainty.
B
eing that we make it our business at Strettons to keep abreast of changes, we thought a snapshot of these may mean you can rest easy for the moment and focus your attention elsewhere. The motivation behind the payday filing changes is to improve the more timely and accurate administration of PAYE, making it easier for businesses and employees to know their tax obligations and also any entitlements that may be available from the Government.
What are the changes? From 1 April, the day the changes officially begin, those in charge of payroll will be required to file employment information each payday instead of just once a month. All information must be filed online unless the businesses has total tax deductions
under $50,000, they may then continue to file paper returns. More detailed information will also be required to be filed for each new employee, including their date of birth if you have it. For the moment there is no change in filing your IR345 information monthly and the date for payment remains the same. So, you’ll still only hand over your money to the IRD once a month, or twice if you are a larger employer. There will be no requirement to file a nil return for periods where there are no payrolls. Returns must be filed within two working days of payday or ten working days if you submit paper returns. There are three ways to file the information – via a payroll software provider using a gateway process, by file upload via your MYIR login or by completing an on-screen form also under your MYIR login.
LET US HELP YOU STAY AHEAD OF IRD CHANGES, SO YOU CAN FOCUS ON GROWING YOUR BUSINESS CONTACT JOANNA ON 07 376 1718
Not sure you're compliant? While change is afoot there’s nothing to fear. If you have any uncertainty about being compliant in time, give our payroll services department a call on 07 376 1700.

Street appeal is key. You certainly don’t want people pulling up to the curb and then driving off before setting foot inside! Think potted colour, mown lawns, a new door mat, a freshly painted front door – none of these things cost much, but certainly add to the initial appeal of your home.
Consider pre-packing This isn’t about packing up your whole house before even selling it, but rather considering storing away some of the less essential or personal items. From hobby collections to a gallery of
family portraits on the wall, you want people to imagine themselves living there – not feeling like they are intruding in someone else’s home.
Fix the little things Broken door handles? Dripping tap? Chipped paint? In isolation, none of these things are a big deal. But all together, they can make a buyer feel that perhaps a house hasn’t been well looked after, or that there will be lots of things to fix if they were to buy the property.
Refresh your decor Whether it’s fresh covers on the bed, handles on the kitchen cupboards, or cushions on the couch, bringing in some new fixtures and furnishings can be a simple way to update your home. Neutral is best (like greys, whites and blacks) as they appeal to a wider range of people and won’t distract from the property itself.

Born in the UK and emigrated to New Zealand in 2004, I studied and gained a Bachelors degree in physiotherapy from AUT. I then worked at Rotorua Hospital for seven years, then two years at QE Health, later locally at Active Plus Taupō, before I finally bought into partnership into the Taupō Physiotherapy Clinic, replacing Rowan Cunningham. My special interests are chronic neck and back pain. As a patient myself, I have developed an interest in trigger point dry needling. Nothing came close to effective treatment as dry needling. There is also nothing better than first-hand experience of being a chronic pain patient. I then completed a one-year post graduate certificate in Western Acupuncture at AUT. I work in a small clinic with my business partner Tim Ralfe. We are fully ACC accredited, and we are able to treat any musculoskeletal complaints, from acute to chronic. Empower Ltd is about helping you to find ‘the right connection’ for your insurance needs and the insurance company that can provide you with the best solution. I relocated from Auckland to service existing clients in Taupō and to assist more families with their insurance needs. As well as being an insurance broker, I am also a KiwiSaver specialist. The majority of my work consists of reviewing clients existing insurances and understanding whether I am able to provide them with better cover at a more competitive premium. Following this appraisal, a comprehensive quote from each insurance company is presented. This is a free service and once you are insured with the right company, I will continue to work alongside you to assist when insurance claims are required. I am very passionate about tailoring the right insurance covers for you – understanding that no one client has the same requirements as the next.
In 2019 golf will see a massive modernisation to the rules. They are starting to have a more relaxed and common-sense approach to the game, and let’s face it, it's about time as golfers at times can take things a little too seriously. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club are adopting a lot of the ‘Speedgolf’ rules to speed up the game. Speedgolf is my favourite form of golf and while many can’t understand how on earth it could be enjoyable, let me share some facts with you: Speedgolf is about playing a traditional style of the game quicker than you normally would. You play with a maximum of seven clubs, you don’t take practise swings, you putt with the flag in and you run/jog between shots. It's great: Play nine holes in 30 minutes and get golf and fitness hit in one go. You'll be amazed by some of the great shots you can play with a limited number of clubs. If you love golf but don’t have the time to play traditional golf, and you don’t take yourself too seriously, come and join me for a fun few holes.
With a passion for people my motivation is to ‘get things right’ for those who trust me with their business. SWITCHING
TO CONNECT BACK IN While holidays are toted as a time to relax, visit family and friends and disconnect from the everyday, the reality of true downtime for many Kiwis is fast becoming a distant memory, as our device usage permanently parties. Why not schedule in a digital detox these holidays?
S
o, why can’t many of us shake the feeling that we still need to work, or check our emails, or post to our Instagram – despite our long-awaited summer break? We all know that too much tech time is bad for our mental and physical wellbeing, our social relations and our children’s cognitive development – yet still we find ourselves pressing buttons. Well, according to findings from a recent LinkedIn survey, 56% of us are worried about falling behind – resulting in 70% of us still tied to technology when vacationing.
The grip of FOMO FOMO – or Fear of Missing Out – has its part to play in staying plugged in. According to Wikipedia, the popularised term is characterised by a desire to, “stay continually connected with what others are doing.” And when we do have to drag ourselves away from Facebook for five minutes? Well, that can result in anxiety, compulsive concern and even depression. So how do we break up with FOMO and be present on holiday? We adopt JOMO, get tough on our screen usage and embrace the outside world with both hands.
What is JOMO? JOMO – or Joy of Missing Out – is the emotionally intellectual antidote to FOMO. It’s all about living in the moment, enjoying what you’re doing here and now and not worrying about what’s happening at work or on social media. 32
It’s about being ever-present, says Kristen Fuller of Psychology Today. “When you free up that competitive and anxious space in your brain, you have so much more time, energy and emotion to conquer your true priorities."
So, how do we ditch our devices? We start by giving ourselves a little wakeup call. By simply downloading an app, such as QualityTime for android or Moment for iOS, you can track just how many hours a day you are ‘actually’ spending looking at your phone or tablet – not what you ‘think’ you are. Next, get tough on social media and emails by turning off notifications and even deleting Facebook before hitting the holiday road. If you want to take it a step further, try joining the experiment www.99daysoffreedom.com. This involves quitting Facebook for 99 days, with check-ins to see how you are doing after 33, 66 and 99 days. Now what? Try holiday snoozing without your phone beside the bed – keep it in the kitchen. Not only will a lack of alarm help you tune into your biological clock – read more about this on page 23, but it removes the urge to check apps the minute you roll over. On that note, why not remove all news websites and sources from your phone this summer. Not only will it give your eyes a break, but it’ll remove the pressure to constantly ‘stay informed’ – which can ultimately produce stress and anxiety.
SO, WHAT DO YOU DO
WITH ALL THIS
TECH-FREE TIME? You channel the three ‘W’s: Wander, Water, Wordplay Wander – Strolling in nature is not only good for boosting vitamin D levels, it also boosts our memory power – great for that game of Cluedo after Christmas dinner! A recent memory test study The University of Michigan conducted, saw half of the participants walk outside through the trees post-test, they then sat the test again – those that went walking remembered 20% more than the first time. Walking in Taupō? We are blessed with some stunning scenic tracks: The Great Lake Walkway, Craters of the Moon, Waipahihi Botanical Reserve, just to name a few.
Water – Whether you're swimming, fishing, surfing or just sitting back and admiring, being on or by the water benefits mind, body and soul. A combined study between Canterbury University, Otago University and Michigan State University, revealed an evolutional connection between humans and nature: “The human brain processes natural environments more efficiently than built-up environments, thereby further increasing opportunity for relaxation and combating the onset of stress.” Taupō water fun? We have a plethora of offerings, from sailing, to trout fishing, to paddle boarding and kayaking, to simple pleasures like skimming stones and feeding ducks! Wordplay – Why not exchange tablet for table top game and invest some time in Kiwi favourites such as Monopoly, Cluedo and Scrabble. Not only will they get you thinking and communicating out loud, they’re also a sensible long-term investment. Unlike the likes of computer games or mobile phone in-app or in-game purchases which are no longer ‘pay once’ situations.
Still need more inspiration for things to do offline this summer? Check out our What's On (page 10), Event Showcase (page 8) and Live Like a Tourist (page 20).

More to This Shed Than Meets the Eye… By Erin Harrison COP Y WRITER
There’s no doubt that good friendships are hard to find, but for those who gather at The Men’s Shed in Taupō – they’ve hit the jackpot.
A
group of mainly retired gentleman (with a few ladies who come along too), The Shed is just as much about keeping the grey matter ticking as it is about having some laughs with some of the most genuinely nice folk around. “I retired in Taupō three years ago, but I wasn’t brave enough to come along until a couple of months ago – I’m so glad I did,” says new member Garry. “It’s important to remain social as you get older, and it was something I had been missing out on. This is a great place to be.” Men's Sheds or ‘community sheds’ are non-profit organisations that originated in Australia, to advise and improve the overall health of all men, and they are now located all around the world. There’s not much the Taupō Shed doesn’t tackle – from their own personal projects, to fixing things for the community. And while donations help to keep the club going, baking is also much appreciated too. “Members join us to make and repair stuff, and to tinker,” says Club Secretary Frederik Frank. “But it is also about learning new skills and making friends with whom they can discuss health issues, or anything else that may be troubling them.
“We have a large coffee pot, a friendly atmosphere and are well known to locals as a place to go for repairs to all sorts of odd items.”
Join the Men's Shed Need another reason to get involved? Worldwide public health research has clearly documented evidence that Men’s Shed members live longer, healthier and happier lives! The well-equipped Taupō shed is located at 29 AC Baths Avenue (right down the back) and open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday – usually from around 10am to 3pm. So if you need something repaired, have some tools at home that aren’t being used (which you might like to donate), or just want to see what The Shed is all about, pop on down to say hello!

BRAND NEW

Has your brand been around forever and is now in need of a facelift? Kick off the new year with a fresh start.
The Tree of Remembrance The festive season is upon us, and we have a very special way you can add a meaningful touch to your celebrations this year.
C
hristmas is family time – sharing life with family and friends and remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. And what better way to celebrate the memory of those dear to our hearts than by adding a Christmas tree bauble designed exclusively by hospice for Farmers. Each year a unique Christmas tree bauble is commissioned and sold at Farmers stores to raise money to support the work we do at hospice as all our services are free. It is often a very difficult time for the family / whānau after a loved one has passed, and our family support bereavement and grief services are always available to help them through this period. Our bereavement
team provide one-on-one telephone or face-to-face support, either in the home or at Hospice House. Our Kowhai Family Group meets monthly and provides the opportunity to spend time with others who have also lost their loved one. And our special biography service is a way in which many of our patients and their families record and preserve lasting memories. The Christmas tree baubles help us to continue the important work we do in our local communities. The baubles are $10 each and are available now from Farmers Taupō. And thanks to Farmers, all the bauble sale proceeds from their Taupō store go to Lake Taupo Hospice.

The Christmas tree baubles are now available for $10 each at Farmers Taupō.
Alongside the display of these specially designed baubles, we also have our Tree of Remembrance. For a small donation, you can take the opportunity to remember someone special in the lead up to Christmas by writing a personal message on a remembrance card that will hang on the tree. The Tree of Remembrance will be in the Farmers store from the 15th November to the 24th of December, and there will be community trees at our Taupō and Turangi Hospice Shops from the 2nd of December.

o Kiwi summer is complete without a stint in the Great Outdoors. Camping, glamping, caravanning or slumber under the stars – whatever your pitch – the New Zealand countryside is one worth exploring. However, before running barefoot through the meadows and channelling Mother Nature, bracing for the bugs and preparing our packs with natures healthcare essentials, is a must for peace-of-mind and body.
Keeping up with the crawlies New Zealand may be the Land of Milk and Honey but we’re also prime real estate for bugs and insects – and they don’t holiday through summertime. According to the Ministry of Health, we’re home to 19 species of sandfly – of which only three bite humans, and 12 types of mosquito – 38
who are mostly active around dawn, late afternoon and dusk. Whilst DEET – diethyltoluamide – is common ingredient found in many commercial insect repellents, it’s not the only holidaying bug solution. Especially as higher concentrations of DEET can irritate and, in rare cases, cause poisoning. Fortunately, there are plenty of other bug-repelling options that are readily available, affordable – or try making your own – and potentially safer for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
Splash on the essentials There are many different essential oils with bug-repelling properties that offer a natural alternative to the heavy chemicals in traditional bug sprays. Try mixing 10 – 20 drops of essential oil with half a cup
of a carrier oil – such as almond, apricot kernel or witch hazel – and half a cup of water. The best oils to fend of the bugs include: lavender, thyme, citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus, mint, basil, rosemary and lemongrass. “Remember, before spraying essential oils onto your skin try patch testing first, or you may want to spray it directly onto clothes instead,” advises Reuben Armstrong of Torpedo7 in Auckland. The outdoor adventure company sell naturalbased Goodbye Sandfly which is packed with essential oils and absorbs easily into the skin. “It’s one of New Zealand’s top sellers because it soothes as well as repels,” he says. “So, it’s ideal to keep in the first-aid kit as a natural healing concoction too.”
Slap on and switch on Perfect for kids – and saves time spraying them down – bug-repelling bands are a top choice for those on the go. Wear them on your wrist, ankle – or attach to belt or backpack – these bands pack a punch in repelling pests and won’t irritate skin. Whilst mosquito coils and citronella candles are both effective means of deterring the midges, leaving a candle burning or a coil smouldering close to camp isn’t always a practical option with people popping in and out of tents. Mosquito repellent lanterns – with inbuilt zappers – are ideal to have indoors or hanging outside the tent, they attract the bugs with their light and then snag them! Summer outdoors doesn’t mean a goodbye to all things digital, there is a great range of portable repelling devices on the market – such as Thermacell which provides over 20 metres of bug protection.
The best oils to fend off the bugs include: lavender, thyme, citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus, mint, basil, rosemary and lemongrass To the rescue For those times that the bugs do bite – or the fish hook accidentally finds a foot or finger – it's important to be first-aid prepared. However, with holiday packing space at an all-time premium, it can be tough knowing what to include and what to keep in the cupboard. “A Kiwi holiday venture can include everything from beach going, to bush trekking to game fishing,” says Jude Randell owner of the Bay of Plenty’s popular Bethlehem Health Shop. “Choosing simple but multipurpose remedies and storing them in a secure lunchbox that’s kept in the car or camp shelf is a must.” Jude’s go-tos for the whole family include: aloe vera gel – for sunburn inflammation, cooling and healing; arnica cream – anti-inflammatory, ideal for sprains and bruises; ginger (capsules or crystallised) – relieves digestive upsets and motion sickness; chamomile tea – with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties it is gentle enough for children, and soothes skin irritation when applied topically. Bring on the bees! Manuka honey is also a great first-aid must-have – and let’s not forget the toast too! Its exceptionally high antibacterial properties are renowned for speeding up the healing process and reducing infection when applied to burns, scrapes and sores.

hen many people think about running, thoughts turn to sweat, shorts and steep hills – but not Alaina Brent’s. Taupō’s young fitness advocate believes jogging is so much more than stepping out on the street, it’s about increasing self-esteem and selfawareness. “I have felt first-hand the benefits, physically and psychologically, from exercising and a healthy lifestyle, following six years of poor health and challenging times,” she explains. Her own realisations lead to questioning the bigger picture and actively sharing her knowledge. And share she has. From running her own fitness and wellbeing business – Monarda Health – to coaching the Taupō Athletics Club and organising a social walkers’ group. “I have also just started a running clinic via the Shoe Clinic which does have a small charge but is free to full-time students / kids 12+,” she explains. With summertime here, it’s not about squeezing in extra fitness time for herself – Alaina trains everyday year-round – it means getting more involved with Taupō’s kids. “I will be working with the Taupō Athletics Club and Sport Waikato to get as many kids involved as possible over this athletics season.” To get involved with Alaina, the running clinic or walking groups / clubs, email change@monardahealth.com.

hen Rory Scott returned home from Australia five years ago, the Palmerston North local jumped at the opportunity to work in Taupō. “It has a fantastic close-knit community of people and businesses and offers a multitude of outdoor pursuits.” The opportunity to visit clients' business sites and developments was also a big drawcard, says Rory. “In Canberra, by comparison, you could be talking to a colleague from across the street and have never met them.” Living in Taupō has also afforded him opportunities to get involved in local volunteer groups. “I was chosen as the 2018 intern board member for the Taupō Chamber of Commerce. I also volunteer as a legal advisor at the Citizens Advice Bureau and I’m a board member for ARC Counselling Services.” It’s about input for real results, he explains. “This year I assisted Chamber with the introduction of the Elevate event series which was designed to bring high level speakers to Taupō to talk about their business experience.” As many Taupō locals will attest to, it’s the people behind the businesses and infrastructure that ensure the town continues to thrive, says Rory. “You need to step out and involve yourself in the community – success is driven via community integration,” he enthuses.

This super easy meal is ideal for summer entertaining – and it will blow your guests away. These ribs were given the name 'Fall off the Bone' for a reason. They are so tender and full of BBQ flavour. If you're not a rib fan, try this recipe – you soon will be. Ingredients 1 rack of ribs (approx. 1-1.5kg) 3 ½ cups pineapple juice (approx. 475ml, reserving 1/4 cup for later) 1 ½ cups brown sugar 1 (16 oz) bottle BBQ sauce
Fall off the Bone
BBQ Ribs
SERVES: 6 PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES COOK TIME: 8 HOURS
STEP 1 Spray the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray (or use a slow cooker liner to make clean up a breeze!) STEP 2 Take your slab of ribs (make sure that they are defrosted) and cut into individual slabs (about 2-3 ribs each). Throw the ribs into the slow cooker. STEP 3 Mix the pineapple juice and brown sugar together and pour over the ribs. STEP 4 Put the lid back on the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 7-8 hours or LOW for 10-12 hours. STEP 5 After they are done in the slow cooker, use tongs to gently pull them out (they will literally fall apart when you touch them).
Hungry for more? For more delicious recipes head to 33Thirty.nz 44
STEP 6 Turn the grill on medium heat. While the grill is warming up, mix together the bottle of BBQ sauce and the 1/4 cup of pineapple juice you saved from earlier.
STEP 7 Place the ribs gently on the grill and and brush with BBQ sauce. STEP 8 Turn the ribs twice, slathering with more sauce each time (you can’t have enough sauce). STEP 9 They will take about 10-15 minutes to glaze over (as soon as that sauce starts to turn sticky, you know they are done). Serve immediately and enjoy. Side with some fries or a coleslaw (or both) and you're all set!

The Best Cuts to Cook This Summer Summertime means backyard BBQs. There's just something about those grill marks that makes meat so much better. To inspire you to fire up that grill and make the most of your BBQs this summer, M21 Meats have shared some of their favourite cuts to try. By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
Ribeye Steak Ribeye is one of the most tender, juicy cuts you’ll find thanks to its natural marbling and fatty cap. The marbling evenly spreads the juices throughout, making it simple to cook and full of flavour. You won’t need any fancy seasonings or cooking techniques when ribeye’s on the menu!
Chicken Breasts You can’t go wrong with grilled chicken breasts – they’re tender, moist and their versatile nature means they can be used in so many different ways. Pair with a side of veggies, salad or pasta, they’re quick, easy and crowd-friendly!
Pork Ribs Full of flavourful fat, pork ribs are everyone’s favourite, and grilling them gives a nice, crispy

touch to that heavenly barbeque flavour. Spare ribs have an even combination of meat and fat, and can take some time to cook. Whereas baby back ribs have more meat, less fat and cook faster. Worth the mess and always a hit.
Salmon Fillets There’s no need to fear grilling fish on the BBQ. A meaty, oily fish like salmon can still work, just make sure you have a clean grill that’s well-oiled and use a spatula. Salmon is delicious and adds a little sophistication to your meal.
Butterfly Lamb Leg A popular cut with a robust, meaty flavour. Butterflied lamb leg is ‘slash-boned’ and opened out, so it cooks much faster than a full leg and is perfect for the grill. This cut tastes best medium rare – browned and crusty on the outside, pink and juicy on the inside.

T U O E M K DEC
STEP OUT ON A NEW PLATFORM THIS SUMMER
Some dream of great things, others dream of decks. Us Kiwis put great emphasis on our outdoor living, in fact 24 % of renovations in 2017 involved deck building Down Under, according to a recent Houzz New Zealand’s survey.
N
ot only does a well-designed deck extend our living outdoors, creating flow and uniting, it also adds value to a home. Whether you’re thinking of selling or staying, a deck investment – or a spruce up of your current one – can increase a home’s value by up to 30%, says Brett Fleming of Framed Builders. However, before taking hand to hammer or hiring a team to turn your dream into a reality, survey your site and surrounds. The key to maximal deck impact and use, is all in the design planning. your materials, factoring in protection and storage, mapping out the best construction techniques and envisioning the overall atmosphere, are all areas that must be hammered out.
Wooden you know it Whether you’re building new or extending an existing deck, choosing local materials will keep budget and maintenance low, says Alex Leonard of Built Spaces. “New Zealand-grown radiata pine is a great sustainable and cost-effective decking option. It’s also available in long lengths which allows for less joins and is an easily workable soft wood,” he says. “Hardwoods come in many different varieties, each has a unique look and is less susceptible to expansion and contraction. However, it is important to oil hardwoods regularly to maintain the natural look and prolong lifespan.” For a wood alternative, composite decking – recycled plastic and sawdust – is available in many colours and is a good, low maintenance option, says Alex. “It holds its colour and doesn’t need to be oiled or painted, and has a hidden fastening system for a seamless finish.”
Protect and store
Most outdoor furnishings are designed to endure a little weather, but for those that aren’t fully protected by deck overhangs or sails, taking measures to protect or store them outside of summer months saves in more ways than one. For greater overhead protection and to maximise indoor/outdoor flow – no matter what the season – custom designing a shade sail, awning or drop screen for your deck, is a sound investment. “When you are custom creating specifically to your deck space, you’re going to maximise your area, fixings will be fitted to a point that’s structurally sound and pleasing to the eye, and the colour scheme is your best fit,” explains Mike Hindrup of Taupō’s Central Trim Cover Makers. “The options are endless. With shade sails you can have top quality waterproof PVC fabric or a shade mesh. With awnings, consider lateral arm awnings, fixed arm awnings or fixed frame awnings – even motorised options,” he explains. “With drop screens you can have a roll up option or crank operated roller tube for crank handle roll up. In the long-term it’s about what’s going to serve you best.”
Best practise
Your space speak
We want our decks to last but we also want to use them freely. Therefore, sound construction is important to longevity and minimal wear and tear. Before picking up the hammer, ensure you have a supply of stainless-steel fixings, as these won’t corrode. Screwing down the ends of boards also results in a cleaner finish. Ventilation is key to preservation too, so don’t fully enclose your deck perimeter, advises Isaac Dean of Oceanside Homes. “If you are going to use a sheet material around the sides of your deck, include vents – these are easily cut in. Alternatively, you could opt for slats with gaps, or leave it open.” As it stands, a compliant deck is a safer deck. “Whilst you don’t require building consent for decks under one-and-a-half metres above the ground, the law still requires you to have a balustrade if it’s over a metre,” explains Isaac. New Zealand’s building research agency, Branz, provide an online ‘Build Supplement, Timber Decks’ full of helpful hints, advice and resource materials: www.branz.co.nz
With deck complete, taking a step back to study your space before venturing off to fill it, is a must. Consider, your overall coverage area, the shape of it – is it long, narrow, broad or wide? Would a bar table set work better than a regular six-seater dining ensemble? Whatever your deck map, keeping affordability and longevity at the fore of decision making – and stylishness too – is a must, says John Collett, owner of Danske Mobler, Taupō. “Whether it’s timber, woven wicker or aluminium it’s about finding a style and price that’s the best fit for you,” he says. “Our outdoor furniture ranges – from lounge suites and loungers, to tables, chairs and umbrellas – come with either a five-year New Zealand-made warranty or three-year imported warranty, to ensure greater peace-of-mind season after season. Pop on down and speak to our experts about sourcing the best choices for your deck.” An ambient atmosphere and one that best fits your family lifestyle and entertaining needs, is all important when dressing your new pad too. By lighting the way, you can change a onedimensional space into something with
character, says lighting expert Chris Brasell of Chris Brasell Landcapes. “Before you illuminate your deck area, it’s important to step back and survey the available surfaces because lighting application must be addressed individually,” he explains. “Question whether you want to light the floor surface, or whether you’re adding light features to your vertical surfaces – or both?” Glare control should also be a key consideration, says Chris.
Chris Brasell Landscapes
“Particularly as decking areas are used as a primary social space. Glare can cause visual discomfort which may limit deck usage.” To boost ambience and comfort further, think cushions, seat pads, planters and hammocks that marry style and function. At the end of the day, it’s your choice which design trends you choose to follow, but quality remains king – you get what you pay for.
