place to be Welcome to another great issue of 33Thirty and another fantastic summer here in the Taupō district. Whether you are a local, a visitor to the district, or just passing through I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you all the very best for the summer and for the coming year, and that any travels you are on are safe and enjoyable ones. Taupō is widely known as the Events Capital of New Zealand and a quick look at the amazing schedule we have lined up around the district will show you why. From the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge to Ironman 70.3, motorsports to musicals and markets, fairs and concerts there really is something for absolutely everyone happening here in our piece of paradise. Add to this the
great year-round attractions we have and it’s easy to see why locals love living here and our visitors keep coming back for more. There really is just so much to do: get out on our lake, go fishing or sightseeing, or ride some of the country’s best bike trails, and when you have done all that try some of our excellent cafés and restaurants and check out the shops. To find out more about all that is going on, get on over to www.greatlaketaupo.com for a full schedule, and then start planning your summer. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in all that is happening here over the summer. Many people offer their time and energy to make these world-class events so successful and their efforts

THE HUB UPDATE What we do
C
entrally located at Level One, 32 Roberts St, the Hub agencies provide the mechanisms for economic development, tourism, events, business and town centre advocacy in the Taupō District. Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district. We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend. Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity. Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding. Enterprise Great Lake Taupō (EGLT) is the economic development agency for the Taupō district. Whether you wish to start a business, grow your business, do business or move your business to Taupō, we can help.
Hidden Gems Focus of Marketing Activity Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) has been focusing recent spring campaign activity on the hidden gems of the region. Marketing content highlights the stunning but more secluded hidden gems of the region, encouraging visitors to get off the usual tourist routes and explore lesser-known areas.
T
his summer, DGLT is encouraging locals to go exploring too. “Find a sense of wanderlust in your own back yard,” Marketing Manager, Anna McLaren, says. “There is a whole world of hidden gems out there waiting to be discovered by locals. Have a holiday at home this summer and you might be amazed at what you’ll find.”
Graffiato Street Art Tour
Explore Your Own Back Yard
Head south to this easy 15km walking and biking loop that flanks the banks of the Tongariro River between Turangi and the Tongariro National Trout Centre. There are multiple entry points along the way, giving you options from 10 minutes to 2 hours in duration.
Here are some of our top hidden gems that should be on your list for exploration this summer:
The Great Lake Taupō Roadie Take the 150km road trip around Lake Taupō and discover secluded bays, idyllic country cafes, southern lake vineyards and gorgeous native bush walks. Trails in the Pureora Forest Park are a highlight, such as Waihora Lagoon, the Waihaha River or the Waihaha Hut track.
Did you know that Taupō has the largest collection of street art in the country? Pick up a Graffiato map from the Taupō i-SITE, grab a takeaway coffee and make your way around the 80-odd artworks in the town centre. The works are truly breathtaking and beautiful.

Creating a Funky, Small-Town CBD
C
ontinually striving to achieve a fun, unique town centre full of surprises, Towncentre Taupō (TCT) connects locals to the CBD with many innovative projects and events in the community. Funky objects around town and lining the lakefront such as red bikes for sporting events, jumbo rugby balls for tournaments, guitars for summer concerts, photo boards, a play house and our clever plywood Christmas trees are
just some of the examples visitors can experience. These projects are funded by TCT and include a local community element whenever possible. The plywood trees for example are cut by the men’s shed, the paint for these is donated by Bunnings and they are lovingly decorated by local primary school children. Our newest and most prominent interactive piece is #LOVETAUPO, right on the lakefront. A collaborative effort with
TCT and Destination Great Lake Taupō, it is clearly the new star of the town centre, where hundreds of visitors capture their visit in front of our beautiful lake and mountains, spreading their love for Taupō. Sometimes it's the simple things that make the greatest mark! Remember to also wander the back streets of the Taupō town centre, where you will see the largest collection of street art in the country!
Meet Matt McIvor
T
aupō is a place where talent can thrive! Enterprise Great Lake Taupō is encouraging people from around NZ (and the world) to take a closer look at the career opportunities on offer here, and to seriously consider relocating to Taupō to pursue their dreams.
Matt McIvor
Here’s a great example of someone who’s done just that When you ask Matt McIvor why he loves living in Taupō, a big smile creeps across his face. Matt is the Marketing Manager at Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL), the company behind Mt Ruapehu’s Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields. Originally from Te Awamutu, Matt spent the past eight years living in the South Island. He jumped at the opportunity to head back to the Waikato and to base his family in Taupō in April this year. “It was a bit of a homecoming for me and such a perfect move given my love of the outdoors and my career, plus Taupō is the perfect spot for families,” he said. “Taupō is very appealing for a number of reasons; the simple things are so easy – such as having large supermarkets and loads of shops, along with great facilities
for kids such as swimming pools and plenty of playgrounds and parks. “It’s also very central, being less than two hours to the beach for a surf, and just over an hour to the nearest ski field.”
The Perfect Summer Town Matt said that as well as being a winter hub, Taupō has the added bonus of being the perfect summer town that has a more authentic Kiwi feel than some other tourist centres. “Taupō has that balance of not getting packed out with tourists but still having a good vibe from our visitors. We’ve got the classic feel of a small town that has everything a larger town has to offer.” It’s easy to see why that big smile of Matt’s doesn’t disappear easily. “I feel incredibly lucky I can live in paradise, advance my career and bring up a family in such a perfect environment.”

hile thinking of something for the next bucket list, I wanted something where I could experience the real beauty of Great Lake Taupō – its many reserves, bays, countryside and lakefront spots – and thought, this town is perfect for a night outdoors! So what better place for a good old Kiwi camp this summer? Having never camped outdoors before, I need to know the basics. And for an enjoyable camping experience, you need to be well prepared and have the right equipment. So here’s what you need to know before you get started.

From freedom camping sites to fully serviced holiday parks, Taupō and the surrounding regions have so many options. Freedom camping is just you and nature, uninterrupted, where holiday parks can offer powered and non-powered sites. Bear in mind that freedom camping sites typically have no services so you’ll need all the facilities compared to camping sites or holiday parks where some are provided. Check what facilities are available before you decide, i.e. showers, shade options, drinking water, etc. As a beginner, it’s good to start with facilities so you’re covered if you forget anything.

Motorhomes are becoming popular and allow you to explore much more than just one site. But if you want the ‘connection’ with the outdoors, many people still prefer tents as a simpler and cheaper option. If you go with the tent, don’t get caught out, choose one or two sizes bigger than the number of people using it so you’ll have a bit of extra space to store your gear.
Make sure your tent is in good condition and you know how to set it up.
Equipment & Gear Working out the essentials may be difficult when you’ve never been camping before, but in any case, make sure you have the necessities.
Some things to consider: • Folding chairs and/or table are always handy for relaxing in the fresh air. • Sleeping bag or sheets and duvet – pay attention to the season and temperature rating when you choose. • Cooking utensils – al fresco cooking and dining is always fun and cost effective too, so stock up on a stove, utensils and prepped meals. • Lighting – keep torches and/or headlights especially if you’re freedom camping. • Clothing – you’ll need lots of layers thanks to our unpredictable weather. • Personal Items – toiletries, medication and other necessities. • Entertainment – books, mp3/ipod, games, etc. Consider how you will charge electronics. • Health and Safety – first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent. This is only a start – there’s too many ways you can have fun camping in Taupō. This summer, make it your mission to camp Kiwi-style and explore the lake’s amazing camp sites and bays.

Riding Waves of Success Just over 12 months ago, NZ Riverjet owner Nick Berryman decided to expand his operation and take NZ Riverjet to the next level.
I
n the past year, the company has doubled the number of employees, introduced world-leading technology including Taupō-based Eye-fly and grown their sales by over a quarter of a million dollars. RiverJet General Manager Tony Brooks says, “It’s extremely exciting to be involved with a company in the dynamic world of Adventure Tourism. NZ Riverjet is extremely fortunate to have a five-star Trip Advisor rating which is a testament to the quality of the products and services we provide. These kinds of results can only be achieved through hard work and a commitment to excellence in all facets of the operation. I am looking forward to the next few years as the company
14
continues to grow and expand into new and developing global markets”.
Unique New Zealand Experience NZ Riverjet boasts two of the country’s most unique tours, ‘The Squeeze’ and ‘Orakei Korako’. Both 2.5 hours long and divided into 3 sections, start with a one hour scenic cruise down the mighty Waikato River and through the stunning Tutukau Gorge. Along the way you can take in incredible wildlife, geothermal activity, hot pools, geysers and remarkable scenery, with the guides providing a commentary on the local Maori history and formation of the landscape. You can then choose to visit either Orakei Korako, rated by Lonely Planet as one of the Top 5 geothermal parks in the world, or venture in to The Squeeze, a mystical destination which includes a walk through an ancient canyon, then on to a geothermal waterfall and hot pool. Finally, it’s time for the adrenalinefilled, fast paced thrill ride back to base. Reaching speeds of up to 90km/h, the team of highly trained and skilled drivers leave their guests with an unforgettable Kiwi jet boat experience. Recently NZ Riverjet introduced their ‘Ultimate Tours’ which include pick up and
drop off from your Taupō accommodation with guided stop overs at Taupō lakefront, Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam. These tours are approximately 5.5 hours long and priced from $189 per person. So for your next summer adventure, come see us at New Zealand Riverjet or visit www.riverjet.co.nz.

Helping boaties stay safe on the water By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER

Visit Vodafone Taupo, or call 0800 434 448. Here is where it matters
here’s nothing like looking forward to a summer on the lake – boating, kayaking, fishing, cruising or taking part in one of our many water activities. But with water fun, safety is priority; you need caution and safety measures, and know where to seek help if you’re stuck. Most of us have heard of Coastguard, but do we really know how much they do for Taupō? For over 40 years, Coastguard Lake Taupō has been providing search and rescue services in our community, helping save people and vessels in distress on our lake and rivers. From towing broken-down boats to helping lost kayakers, Coastguard’s top priority is to always bring people home safely. Each year, Coastguard volunteers contribute 700,000 hours to helping carry out search and rescue, breakdown assistance, running courses and much more so we are safe on the water.

Best volunteer group in town Run by 36 volunteers, the Coastguard team have earned the Community Supreme Award, Community Relations Activity of the Year 2017 and Top Volunteer Organisation in Taupō. The team are active in the community too, supporting our local water and sports events, assisting the police in search activities and holding open days for the public.
Boating education Having trained volunteers and skippers is critical for an organisation responsible for saving lives at sea, and as well as keeping their own team trained, Coastguard also provide boating education and training in boat operations and ensuring boat users are educated in water and boating safety.
How you can help Coastguard is a charity and relies on memberships, sponsors, fundraisers and donations to help fund what they do. You can also help by volunteering, becoming a member or donating. Get free breakdown assistance and various discounts when you become a Coastguard member.

Let’s Get Back To Talking By Vicki Beker
GENER A L M A N AGER – BEK ER FINDL AY A LL A N
Some of us will remember a time, when the only way to get things done, ask for help or seek advice, was to pick up the phone or visit the person.
T
oday, relationships have been taken captive by technology through use of devices and automations. There can be, in some instances, no real person behind these communications, and with cyber security issues you never can be sure that who you are communicating with is who they say they are. Don’t get me wrong – email, texting and automation has its benefits but at some stage the person-to-person relationship still, in my opinion, ties everything together.
Emails galore Email for Beker Findlay Allan can be both a curse and a cure. They are an effective way of touching base with new suppliers, clients, staff and the list goes on. However, with so much email traffic we can get desensitised to the constant noise of them and often find that opening emails first thing in the morning is a negative experience, as we hadn’t yet cleared the emails from the previous day, week or month.
Pick up the phone On the other hand, phone conversations are a great way to generate results. We can question, debate, ask advice and be clear about intentions for those clients we 16
act for. Often a series of emails with back and forth communications will achieve the same result with double the time, frustration and be less effective. Skype and Facetime also enable you to see the person, listen to the tone and facial expressions and create that virtual meeting.
Have a conversation At Beker Findlay Allan, person-to-person catch ups are at the top of our list. We can really understand our clients and the conversation creates better enquiry connecting to better advice. But most of all we enjoy the teamwork and friendship. It’s important for businesses to understand where technology fits in their business but not to let technology undersell your value or dictate your culture. Don’t be afraid that talking is old fashioned. Instead it can now be your businesses’ point of difference. For Beker Findlay Allan it helps us create more value and success for all those people we work with. If you are needing accounting or business advice, don’t email. Pop in, see us and let’s get talking.

ith over 77 years in the business, Cheal is well known for its expertise in the fields of Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, Surveying and Resource Management Planning. You may have seen them at work in the region, engaged their services for a project, or read some of the articles written by some of their technical experts. But what lies behind the façade of a professional services organisation? What makes their brand and delivery one that is synonymous with ‘expertise’?
Development A strong supporter of continual professional development training and career advancement through a wide variety of challenging projects, Cheal also encourages its technical staff to achieve chartered status within their profession, being the best they can be. Setting performance goals and having open communication at all levels in the business ensures good feedback and ultimately, a workforce that is valued and motivated to succeed.

Leadership
Infrastructure Setting and maintaining high standards starts with the inner workings of the business and Cheal prides itself in having created exceptionally strong systems, values, brand and a dedicated leadership team – what it considers the essential infrastructure of good business. Add to that a consistent strategy of recruiting the right people for the business at all levels and across all disciplines, the blueprint is one that sustains ongoing growth and a strong team culture. 18
In such a technologically advanced industry, it’s critical to keep up with (and ideally stay ahead of) the competition. This is not a company that follows, nor a company that ignores development. Cheal is a leader – 3D laser scanning, drone surveys, a high level of investment in software and hardware and a team that is highly skilled in using it.
The experts themselves? The Cheal workforce is diverse with technical professionals from over 10 countries, highly qualified and experienced – absolutely what you might expect from a company that sells professional advice. Business Mentors: Inspiring Success By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
H
elping businesses in New Zealand for 25 years and in Taupo for 6 years, Business Mentors NZ has been providing advice and invaluable support to business owners through the knowledge and experience of their mentors. Sometimes, running a business can be challenging, especially for owners who don’t know how to move forward, get a plan together, make ideas happen, or just need some motivation and focus. That’s why Business Mentors are there to act as a sounding board, provide business advice and generally help keep owners focused on their goals. Designed to help businesses in need, Business Mentors NZ offers two programmes:
SME businesses A business mentoring programme for small to medium business who want to grow or need help to solve specific business challenges.
Start-up mentoring A six-month programme of accelerated mentoring for people who have a business idea or are looking for help in starting their new business.
Become a Mentor If you’ve ever been a business owner who has experienced opportunities or faced challenges, you will have developed a range of skills and experiences that you could use in helping other businesses grow and thrive. There is so much a business person needs to know, and you may not realise it, but your learning and experience could be useful to others. Mentors volunteer their time to work alongside a client during the programme, but the biggest reward here is giving back to the community, contributing to further business growth and reciprocating the business support you may have had in your journey.

New Industrial Park in Town By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
A
new, modern subdivision adding to Taupō’s existing industrial business base is under construction on the new Keehan Drive near the end of Crown Road and Mitre 10, a short drive away from the town centre. The subdivision’s 12 lots will bring together likeminded, premium businesses that will provide a range of industrial-related services. With four already under construction and others starting soon, locals will see the area develop over the next 12 months. Jamie Keehan, Director, spotted the opportunity and bought the land in 2016, with a vision of a new industrial area with a street appeal, overcoming the current congestion of existing industrial areas. The subdivision is spread across 42,000 square metres of what was old rural land, and gives businesses the opportunity to start fresh or expand over generous
22
land parcels. Local team of Logan and Lee Frew from Coresteel have secured the first three industrial builds in the sub-division proving the flow on benefits to the local community.
Transforming a derelict vacant block of land into a hub of industrial businesses, Hard As Developments Ltd is changing the face of Taupō’s industrial area.
New shopping destination When asking businesses what they really want, Jamie found that the larger lot sizes are what really appeal to businesses to allow them to cater for showrooms as well as manufacturing and warehouse storage. “With the lack of extra space in the current industrial areas as well as offering exposure to SH 1 and Crown Road, this development compliments the recent Mitre 10 one as a destination for locals.”
Better business The subdivision has attracted many large businesses, the first being Mainfreight, which you’ll now be able to see when you drive past. Thanks to its handy location, Mainfreight’s base is more central to delivery areas and highways, resulting in more efficient operation. Apex Windows & Doors is the next one under construction – a locally owned windows and joinery business that will cater for its manufacturing side of the business as well as a customer friendly showroom.
From multi-unit business complexes to large showrooms, locals will soon see some exciting new buildings and businesses mark their place in Taupō’s new industrial hub. With only two lots left to sell, the demand has been strong. There are still options for businesses who want to lease buildings and get a design and build package arranged so that they get the best benefits of a brand-new building, designed to meet their specific needs, in a popular new industrial sub-division.
SECUR E ONE OF T HE L A S T T WO LOT S NOW:
High-Profile NEW Industrial Lots -
LOT 3 4,077 m²
with prime Crown Road and SH 1 exposure Now’s the time to get smart, invest in Taupō’s growth area, secure the opportunity for future returns on investment and maximise the value of your business and assets.
LOT 9 2,683 m²
Is it time for your business to move? × No more 'patch work' tired buildings × No more tight, congested sites × No more paying premium rent for an old building Call me to discuss how you could have a brand-new building in a new high-profile subdivision at possibly a similar lease to what you are paying now. Investment and options to buy available.

Hard as Rocks has supplied and installed the River Rock stone veneer throughout the new subdivision. With 16 different stone profiles and colours to choose from, Hard as Rocks offers a cost effective and impressive way of adding the WOW factor to any new or existing project. Whether it be a new residential or commercial build, a face-lift to a tired existing building or even just the entry pillars and fireplace at your home, Hard as Rocks can give you the look and feel of real stone without the price.

Celebrating 25 years in the NZ music scene, watch out for Salmonella Dub’s three special shows this summer, featuring the return of Tiki Taane. By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
Y
ou can watch the pioneers of New Zealand’s Dub n’ Bass scene at their most iconic, performing in Taupō on 3 February. To find out more about the upcoming events, we caught up with founding member, Andrew Penman, and David Deakins (drums / vocals) to tell us more…
Tell us about your upcoming concert in Taupō. Andrew: Kia ora, our show in Taupō is the third of a run of three to celebrate our 25th birthday. Tiki Taane is back for a few shows, joining us on stage to celebrate this anniversary.
NZ Music Legends: Salmonella Dub in Taupō The Taupō show will be an exciting mix of our full catalogue spanning the last 25 years with a few new tunes thrown in. Expect a massive dance floor experience with a big visual show. The most exciting thing for me with this show is the full line up on the day of mates we have worked with over the years. Joining us are Trinity Roots, Ladi 6, L.A.B (the Kora bro’s), The Sunshine Soundsystem and Soulware. It will be an awesome evening.
What have been the highlights over the years and about your 25th anniversary? Playing the Gathering dance party on the Takaka Hill every New Year’s Eve from 1995 through to 2002. That had to be one of the best outdoor events with the most diverse fusion of musical styles.
What do you think sets Salmonella Dub apart? For me it is a combination of things. Our creative process is very open. We work together crafting our music. Rather than having one ‘song writer’ we tend to craft our music from the rhythm beds first. The synergy of Dave (drums and vocals), Mark (bass), and my effected guitar style is our foundation and signature sound. That combined with an amazing, groove
24
based audience has kept us in check over the years.
What do you love about Taupō? The locals are so, so friendly and hospitable with so much aroha and wairoa. And massive respects to the Taupō iwis Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Tahu / Ngāti Whaoa and Raukawa for making this special place home.
What are you looking forward to the most in Taupō? I’m looking forward to meeting all the new people. This event has attracted an amazing amount of Te Ika a Maui travellers and also quite a few from overseas. I can’t wait to see all the smiling faces on the dancefloor.
What’s your favourite activity in Taupō? David: As an avid fly fisherman, the word Taupō has always had magical connotations for me. I’ve been coming to the Taupō area for a week every year for 20 years now, without a year missed. Reading about it and visiting the area has resulted in a lifelong love affair with Taupō and specifically the Tongariro river. This year two mates and I landed 334 trout over the week.

Do you need TWENTY years of experience behind your brand & website?
How to Pull Off a Rebrand Businesses inevitably face the need to rebrand. It’s not a bad sign, it just means a business has grown past its current identity and needs a look that truly represents them. By Jo Lee
COP Y WRITER
B
efore you leap, make sure you’re rebranding for the right reasons… not just because you’re bored. Maybe your business is/has evolved? Have or are changing direction? Maybe you’re no longer inspired by your brand and your customers aren’t either – or it reminds you of corduroy bell bottoms – dreadfully stuck in the past.
We love rebrands. They can breathe life into a business, but they have their pitfalls! Make sure you get professional advice before you take the leap. Jo GENERAL MANAGER
So What is a Rebrand? It’s an update of a business’s goals, messaging and culture which are reflected in the brand’s look and feel. One that hopefully improves your position with existing customers and your first impression with potential customers. What it’s not: just a name change. Remember, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Only rebrand if your business needs it. Unnecessary or poorly considered branding decisions can scare off customers and confuse existing ones, who will end up leaving you. If you have strong brand equity, consider what might be lost before you change. So, how do you do this?
Follow the Fundamentals: Research: Know how and where you fit. Who is your market? Your competition? What is your team culture? It’s a good time to look at performance, your strengths/ weaknesses, values, and goals? You may need to cater for a changing audience or adapt to increasing competition, make sure you know your purpose. Differentiate: A successful brand is seen as unique in customers’ minds. If you’re rebranding, look at adding new features or something extra, giving customers more reason to stay with you during the change. Communicate: Send your customers ample and personal communication explaining what it means for them. Update your website and social media pages, and advertise where you need to; Google AdWords is a great way to get the word out fast. Consistency: Your brand message needs to be repeated across every touch point a customer could come across; business card, advert, branded stationery etc. That includes everywhere online too, make sure your domain name and all your social media handles are available before you start the process and change your name!
Think You Need a Rebrand? At ninetyblack, our brand work is guided by these principles – to ensure that we get you the right look, to the right people, in the right places. So, are you ready? Call the brand professionals today on 0800 90 25 22. 29
Tree of Remembrance As the sun shines for just a little bit longer and a little bit warmer each day, thoughts inevitably turn to summer and the lead up to Christmas. For the families supported by Lake Taupo Hospice, this can be a bittersweet time.
A
s part of our unique ‘whole person’ approach – giving equal importance to the physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs – making lasting memories is a quintessential part of what we do, it’s about growing connections, sharing stories, concerns and joys.
Our biography service is a way in which many of our patients and their families create lasting memories. Though it can be challenging at times, documenting life stories brings not only the opportunity to record and preserve, but also as we share those stories to laugh, sigh, reflect and feel empowered. Along with the fun, frivolity and delight that comes with Christmas it is also a time for contemplation, for reminiscing on the past and remembering those who have taken their final journey. To reflect this, each year a unique Christmas tree bauble is commissioned and sold at Farmers stores
Hospice Christmas Baubles Especially designed by New Zealand Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design student Jemma Smith, our Christmas baubles are $10 each and available now from Farmers, Taupō. The Tree of Remembrance will be in the store until 24 December and there will be a community tree at the Taupō Market on the last two Saturdays before Christmas (16 and 23 December).
30
to raise money to support the work we do at Hospice – including the bereavement and grief support we provide to patient’s families. Alongside these specially designed baubles we also have our Tree of Remembrance, where for a small donation, you can take the opportunity to remember someone special in the lead up to Christmas and write a personal message on a card to hang on the tree.
For marketing to work, 3 things must be in balance; get the right look, to the right people, in the right places. Team up with professionals who can deliver on this. GJ CREATIVE DIRECTOR

beauty get ready and sunsmart for summer
or  the burn? Summer is in full swing, bringing with it longer days, loads of sun, laziness and the desire to just sit back. But that doesn’t mean you should stop looking after yourself; during these months, your skin and hair will get a lot of abuse from the harsh sun, we neglect our exercise routine, wanting to rest and take a break, and we ignore our health while indulging on festive goodies. Most importantly, you need to avoid the burn by wearing sunscreen. Helping prevent skin cancer and protecting you from all other sun damage, sunscreen should be your go-to.

oleMap offers New Zealand's most trusted and accurate skin cancer early detection programme. Enjoy summer safe in the knowledge you've had your skin checked by the very best. Not only is melanoma one of New Zealand’s most prevalent cancers, we have the highest incidence in the world. Any sun damage to skin increases melanoma risk, so it pays to be vigilant. Nearly 50% of all melanomas first appear on unmarked skin, not as a pre-existing
mole or lesion. So it’s important to know the signs of disease and where to get expert advice and treatment. The good news is that melanoma is nearly curable when detected and treated early, so don’t delay in seeking specialist advice. Regular screening is the key to good skin health. Test Driving the All New
Hyundai
Bold on the inside and out, with a unique, confident look and the armour and attitude of a superhero – here’s the newest addition to Hyundai Taupo. Promising many new innovative features, outrageous style, and total comfort while driving, we were curious to experience it for ourselves. So I got behind the wheel and took it for a test drive. I
f you’re an active urbanite who needs to stay in arm’s length of a latte, but not a hard-core adventurer, this one’s for you. My first encounter with a Hyundai was a Tucson in 2010. I don’t have fond memories so let me first state that there may have been some brand misconceptions going in to this test drive. I was, however, pleasantly surprised. The Kona is annoyingly good. Unless you have been living under a rock, you may have noticed that nearly every millennial is hopping out of their pint-sized SUV clad in active wear ready to hit the local café for some smashed avocado on toast. Hyundai seems to have been caught with its pants down in this segment until now, and with the feature list on offer you could say they are last, but definitely not least.
Distinctive and Stylish Where other brands have gone for a smaller version of its bigger brothers, it seems the Kona has a completely different mother and father to any of the models in the Hyundai lineup. Bold in its styling, Hyundai has kept with the fashion of these small SUV’s. There are nine colours to choose from and even a two-tone roof option. Just don’t tick that box if you go for black because no one will notice.
Clever Safety Features Where the Kona stretches out in front of the pack is with safety. Even that Nordic brand that you associate with safety charges you extra for some safety features. Hyundai has taken a different approach here. With SmartSense, you get all of them – even on the base model;
All-new Kona.

heads up display, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring. I tried to see how active the lane keep assist is by taking my hands off the wheel. It will keep you in the centre of your lane like a pro but it will soon remind you to put your hands back on the wheel. If you’re on the road a lot hammering out the k’s, this could keep your drive just that little bit more relaxing. The lane departure warning became a bit of a game to see how far you can travel without it beeping at you when you get close to the lines. I think I would turn this one off eventually. The heads-updisplay prevents the need to look at your dashboard so often, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. In fact, you kind of forget the traditional dashboard is even there.
Perfect Sound
Innovative Technology
Robust Engines
With the target market in mind, Hyundai has loaded this vehicle with more tech than KITT on Knightrider. You can customise everything even down to what is displayed on the heads-up-display. Wireless charging for your phone still amazes me. The technology has been in use on your toothbrush for a long time, but it is somehow not even near as impressive. Place your handset in the designated area and hear the nice ‘ding’ from your phone as it starts to charge. This should be standard in any car until phone manufacturers can produce something that lasts longer than a few episodes of Netflix and a session on candy crush.
Two engines and two options / packages to choose from keeps the decision simple. Choose from Entry or Elite with the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated or the 1.6 turbo.
I’m a bit of a sucker for decent sounds. This is no audiophile setup nor would you expect it to be at this price but it would rival many others I have heard from more expensive brands. Turn it up and the bass doesn’t distort. In fact, it has quite a punch. Stream spotify through Apple Car Play or Android Auto and you may find yourself getting snapped at the lights singing along to your favourite tunes.
Comfortable Driving Driveability will not disappoint you. Quick steering makes the car feel nimble and the 1.6 turbo engine as tested gives you the confidence to overtake. Hit Hatepe Hill and get in front of the slow-moving traffic without feeling like your fuel is being used to make more noise than power.
