We love
in Taupō
A
nd you’ll love it too because it’s a great place to be even when the weather turns cold, with plenty to see and do. This is highlighted during July when Taupō Winter Festival hosts events for all ages and tastes, and this years’ event is an extra special one as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary with our sister city in Suzhou, China. I won’t give it all away here, but it really is a must see for us all. The Winter Festival website is just one great source of information, with a full schedule of the happenings over the week. Find out more at www.taupowinterfestival.co.nz. I encourage anyone who can to get along and check it out.

In addition to this, winter means skiing and snowboarding for those who can take advantage of our fine ski fields in the Central Plateau. Taupō is partnering with Tourism New Zealand and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts to bring Australian snow lovers here to experience all we have to offer, and as Taupō and Turangi serve as gateways to these ski fields the accompanying increase in visitor numbers will be a great boost to our local economy. The cooler months certainly don’t dampen the spirits of our local restaurant and café owners either. There is nothing better than enjoying our local hospitality, whether it be a coffee to warm up or sampling some of the fine cuisine on offer. If this is more than just a passing visit for you, we recommend our fine array of accommodation to fit all styles and budgets. Stay a while and experience our region to the fullest, and be sure to check out the region's website www.greatlaketaupo.com for an up-to-date list of what is happening.
Many people are actively involved in looking after the place we love and making this a great place to live. If you’re one of these local business people or volunteers, thank you for your hard work. This character, coupled with our top-notch hospitality, is a key component in making us the events capital of New Zealand. And if you are a visitor and like what you’ve experienced here, come and join us! Our low unemployment and great lifestyle in addition to affordable housing and building options make our region a great choice. We’d love to have you! David Trewavas TAUP Ō DIS TRIC T M AYOR

THE HUB UPDATE What we do
C
entrally located at Level One, 32 Roberts St, the Hub agencies provide the mechanisms for economic development, tourism, events, business and town centre advocacy in the Taupō District. Destination Great Lake Taupō (DGLT) is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Taupō district. We are responsible for marketing the Taupō district to domestic and international markets with the aim of increasing visitor numbers and spend. Towncentre Taupō (TCT) represents the interests of every business in the Taupō central business district. Our aim is to promote the development of Taupō's town centre as a safe and vibrant community while retaining its unique identity. Taupō Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Our role is to promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. Events Capital – We support the events industry to run both commercial and community events by offering support that includes infrastructure, venues, advice, equipment, promotion and funding. Enterprise Great Lake Taupō (EGLT) is the economic development agency for the Taupō district. Whether you wish to start a business, grow your business, do business or move your business to Taupō, we can help.
Wrapping Up the Autumn Cycling Campaign
D
estination Great Lake Taupō is at the tail end of their autumn campaign which was all about profiling cycling and mountain biking in the region as a hook to attract visitors through the months of April and May. “Our aspiration is to increase significantly the number of domestic (and international) tourists that visit the Taupō district, especially in the shoulder seasons and winter”, says Destination Great Lake Taupō Marketing and Communications Manager, Anna McLaren.
Autumn is such a great time to bike here due to our free-draining pumice soils and with the massive growth we’re continuing to see in cycling tourism, and now e-biking, our region has a lot to offer. “We know that cyclists don’t just travel to go biking, they tend to stay longer and do more, so it is the perfect fit”, she says.
This year’s campaign was supported strongly with in-region activations in partnership with Towncentre Taupō and Bike Taupō, including the Taupō Monster Bike Sale, Second-Hand Bike Sale and Red Bike Treasure Hunt which were all held in the school holidays. Initial feedback has been very positive with retailers indicating an increase in sales over the period. A hugely successful locals day was also held on the Waihaha section of the Great Lake Trail with more than 70 people taking part in the heavily discounted experience – many for the first time. “It’s been fantastic to see various sectors coming together to collaborate on initiatives that have reinforced the region as a biking destination. We (DGLT) focus on attracting visitors to the region by promoting our unique offerings and the experiences available here, so to have their expectations met and reinforced through a whole series of local events when they get here is a powerful combination” says McLaren. DGLT’s winter campaign is due to launch early June and will build on last year’s ski and snow play campaign in order to profile the winter holiday experiences in our region.

Think Green and Give Plastic the Boot Towncentre Taupō has been working with the Taupō District Council to reduce waste in the Taupō CBD. This concept was launched through the 2018 Spark Stella Awards with the new Green Customer Experience Award.
I
n order to protect the place we love, we need to think of the environment in all business practices, including the customer experience being delivered. The Spark Stella Awards is looking for businesses using green initiatives that reduce waste, promote environmental discussions and incentivise customers to be environmentally friendly.
This new award, sponsored by Taupō District Council, is designed to recognise businesses that utilise customer facing green initiatives to create a point of
difference and improve the overall customer experience. Our efforts won't stop here. Plans for Plastic Free July are also under way. Taupō should get ready to give plastic the boot for one month with the end goal of permanent reduction in single use plastic. Think jute shopping bags, aluminium drink bottles and reusable coffee cups!
How do we know our economy is growing? If you’re in business, you will likely keep track of how your business is performing. For many businesses in our district, the first few months of 2018 have been strong and buoyant trading conditions and many business owners are reporting record figures.
I
t is always interesting (and important) to benchmark your business performance against others. You can do this using amalgamated industry data, or you might like to use some of the various statistics and information we have freely available. Just like you do in your business, Enterprise Great Lake Taupō uses data to monitor how well the wider Taupō economy is performing. This information helps shape the services we offer, the way we prioritise our work and the kind of work we undertake. The ‘Marketview’ data for the first three months of 2018 has just been released, showing how much money was spent in the Taupō district, including a separate set of data for the Turangi area. Over this period, spending was up 6.7% and transactions were up 5.8% compared to the same three months in 2017. In simple terms, more people were buying more things, more frequently. In real dollar terms, $180m was spent across the district on electric card retail transactions (eftpos or credit card).
Another important metric we monitor is jobs and businesses. At the end of 2017, there were 17,834 jobs in the Taupō District, and these were spread across 4,701 business units. Both the number of jobs, and the number of businesses trading, have steadily increased every year since 2010, confirming our economy is continuing to steadily grow.
If you’d like to look at this information in detail, head to greatlaketaupo.biz and search for research.

erhaps this is why it’s on the bucket list. So as luck would have it, I got the opportunity to do the Fun Drive at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park. The car you drive is a Mazda MX5 fully kitted out with roll cages, racing seats and harnesses. You can choose either a manual or automatic, and having been born at the dawn of the 1980s and being taught how to drive properly, I chose a manual. You might be thinking the MX5 is a bit of a hairdresser’s car, and I guess that is the image it might have with some people – but actually, the MX5 is handsdown the most successful roadster ever built with true sports-car DNA. It’s a lightweight, front-engine, rear-wheel drive car with pin sharp handling and a great exhaust note. The experience starts off by signing your life away on an indemnity form – real bucket list stuff here, then you are handed over to an instructor. My instructor was Alan, who did a great job of explaining everything. We started off getting kitted up in a racing suit and helmet, walked
down to the garage and got in the car. I started in the passenger seat with Alan driving me round the track explaining the correct lines for all the corners and then back in to the pit lane. It’s then all down to you – hop in the driver’s seat, get strapped in and away you go. Being on the track was awesome. And after the first couple of laps taking it easy, you start to build confidence and open the car up. Its handling really is sharp and just seems to hang in there as you push on faster and faster around the corners. You can even clip the red and white rumble strips on the corners like you see on TV. The laps weren’t timed, but I don’t think it matters and really isn’t what the experience is all about. Just getting the chance to go out on a track in a great-handling car that you can rev right through the gears and reach speeds worthy of losing your license on the public roads is a fantastic experience and will leave you wanting a lot more. Based on the post experience chatter with the staff at Fun Drive, a lot more may be just around the corner, so look out for more to come. The operation is run very professionally, and I felt safe at all times. If you have always wanted to have a go on a race track, this is one to try. 15
The Bright-Line Rule The new government have been quick to start making changes based on their election promises, and one that came into effect late March getting people talking is the extension on the bright-line rule.

W
ith this coming up in the media again, there’s the misconception out there that when you sell your family home you will now pay capital gains tax. In most cases this is not true and your family home falls out of the rules. The bright-line rule was first introduced on 1st October 2015 which states that if you sell residential land within two years of owning it, you must pay tax on any profit made unless an exception applies. This was extended to five years on 29th March 2018. The rule only applies to residential land. It does not apply to farmland or business premises.

However, you are exempt from the bright-line rule if: • The property is your main home. • You only have one main home; therefore if you live in two houses then you need to determine what home is your main home. • You inherited the property. If you sell property that you inherited then the bright-line rule does not apply. • The property is transferred under a relationship settlement agreement. The transfer is deemed to be treated as sold at the original cost. However, if the property is then sold within two years of the original acquisition date then any profit made could still be taxed under the bright-line rule. Where you only own one home and you live in it, you are fine, but when you or your trust start to own more than one residential property you may be subject to these new rules. If you are in this situation you are best to talk to a business advisor about the implications of selling or buying more residential property. eotechnical Engineering used to be a nice respectable profession where no-one really knew what you did and you could quietly get on with it without too many distractions. However, the Christchurch earthquakes changed all that, and overnight Geotechnical Engineering was thrust into the limelight. People were introduced to terms like “liquefaction”, “lateral spread” and “foundation improvements”. As a consequence of the Christchurch earthquakes, regulatory authorities around NZ have become more aware of the damaging effects of earthquakes, and in particular how critical the geotechnical aspects of a building project can be. This has led to revised engineering guidelines and greater scrutiny on the wider engineering profession.
So what does a Geotechnical Engineer do? Simply put, a Geotechnical Engineer is half a Geologist and half a Civil Engineer. All structures, be it a building, a road or an earth structure such as a dam, are

3D Laser Scanning supported by the ground, and therefore one of the key roles of the Geotechnical Engineer is to determine what the local soils are and how they will react when the load from a structure is placed on it. A Geotechnical Engineer interprets the ‘real world’ of soil and rock, and converts it into a series of numbers that represents its strength and can be used in equations to determine if the loads and forces that are generated from a given structure can be balanced against the strength of the soil or rock. Cheal Consultants has an experienced team of Geotechnical Engineers operating within the Central North Island. Within the rural sector we specialise in the remediation of existing irrigation dams and the design and construction of new ones. Cheal also has experience in foundation design for farm infrastructure such as milking shed platforms, stock underpasses, farm culverts and bridges. These larger projects tend to require a multidiscipline approach and Cheal’s wider team of Engineers, Surveyors and Planners provides the support and expertise to ensure efficiencies and overall satisfaction.

Connecting Young Professionals in Taupō E With a broad membership base and a varied events calendar, Taupō Young Professionals gives you opportunities to network outside of your normal circles in a fun, social setting. By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
20
stablished in 2013 by a group of motivated young individuals, Taupō Young Professionals was created to make it easy for young people to broaden their local networks beyond their work and study peers. The group aims to retain young professionals in Taupō by enabling these networks and friendships to be formed. “Often, qualified professionals move to Taupō not knowing anyone, and they find it hard to meet other like-minded people outside of their work. We want to help build social networks in Taupō so newcomers are more likely to enjoy working here, and stay.” – Robert Steven, Committee Member
Social events The group’s flagship event is a monthly networking evening held at The Deck bar on Tongariro Street on the first Thursday of every month, from 7.30pm. Come along and enjoy an evening socialising with other professionals. The venue changes each season, so check out the Facebook page for updates on the next meeting. The group also has a series of social events running throughout the year including the annual Flat Crawl, quiz nights, hiking weekends, mountain biking
trips, movie screenings and other events organised by the members. These events are a great way for new locals to make friends in Taupō and see the activities our region has to offer. You can even arrange your own via the Facebook group.
Committee The TYP Committee is made up of a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about supporting young people in Taupō, keep the group running and make the events happen. The current committee includes Daniel Baxter, Sophie Woodburn, Hannah Breckon and Robert Steven.
Interested in joining? Moving to a new town, trying to get yourself out there and meeting new people can be daunting, so the networking evenings can be a great way to meet like-minded people and have a relaxing evening. Visit the Facebook group (search for Taupō Young Professionals on Facebook) and join the next networking session to see what it’s like.

BLACK TIE CHARITY EVENT Making a Difference By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
A cancer diagnosis can be frightening. It affects not only the person diagnosed, but also loved ones – sons and daughters, parents, siblings, partners, friends, husbands and wives. Thankfully the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is here to ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
M
ost of us have heard of the Cancer Society, but do we know what they actually do to support the Taupō community? The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer in our communities. They do this by providing personalised practical and emotional support to people with cancer, their carers and family/whānau, funding vital research, and helping Kiwis reduce their risk of cancer by encouraging and advocating for SunSmart, smokefree and healthy lifestyles.
Personalised support in Taupō Taupō-based Cancer Society Community Liaison Nurse Caren Barnett is available to help you access the Cancer Society’s services, and often makes home visits to people who need support. “We are part of many people’s lives. Cancer affects families, friends and colleagues – not just the person with the diagnosis.” “I am glad to be here to support the people of Taupō and help make their experience a little bit easier. So please do give me a call or send me an email if I can help.”
Daffodil Day: 31 August 2018 Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s annual flagship event, raising awareness of cancer and generating funds for the Cancer Society’s wide range of patient and carer services. The day symbolises hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. Since 1990, this iconic event has inspired people to come together and support the Cancer Society's work and provides an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer treatment and prevention in New Zealand. 22

Facebook Marketing 101 If you’re not already engaging with your customers on Facebook, you’re missing out on one of the biggest social media channels to reach your prospects and customers. Not just because it’s ‘what’s in’, but this is where your target audience is likely to be.
F
acebook is free, accessible, builds an online community and has a huge, diverse audience – so it’s the top social media platform you need to have covered. From easily viewing your business hours and location to writing reviews to engaging with your content, it lets you make people feel connected with your brand, build a community, and include your followers in everything you share.
How do you get started? If you’re new to Facebook, there’s nothing wrong with starting slow and small, but make sure you are carefully maintaining and monitoring your page. The whole purpose of a Facebook page is building a community, so you can’t leave it alone once it’s there. 1 Create a page that reflects your brand personality: Does it capture your target audience? Use photos and layout options that show visitors who you really are.
Post fresh content regularly: Content is the key reason visitors will connect with you so give them more reasons to keep doing so. Engaged users will likely share your content more often, increasing your reach. 2
3 Curate content: If it’s too difficult or time-consuming to create content, curate it. There are likely many other pages that might have something your target audience would also love.
4 Monitor and track: Keep an eye on what content your followers are engaging with, what boosts page likes, where your audience is, etc. This not only tells you what’s working and what isn’t, but you’ll start seeing opportunities for more engagement and growth.
Do you need TWENTY years of experience behind your brand & website?
Once you’ve got the hang of the basics, you can then look into expanding your community further through promotions and paid advertising.
Changes for business To push less noise and more meaningful connections for users, Facebook recently changed its algorithm to begin favouring content from friends and family, and showing less business-related posts on timelines. But that doesn’t have to be an obstacle, these changes can be an opportunity for you to focus on engaging, quality content via sponsored ads.
Paid Advertising While these changes are decreasing your organic reach, keeping your visibility high is as important as ever, and the most efficient way to do this now is through paid advertising. Facebook has an efficient, targeted ad system to help you reach a new audience quickly or spread content fast with image ads, carousels, product ads, video and more. By Deepika Sulekh
Your Facebook business page is an effective and relevant online shop-front for your business. Use this channel as a marketing tool to engage with your customers and prospects. DEEPIKA DIGITAL MARKETING

Mike King: I Am Hope Tell us about I Am Hope.
Travelling the country from Bluff to Cape Reinga atop Suzuki 50cc scooters during March, Mike King and his mates covered 8,000 km over 67 locations talking to more than 20,000 schoolkids and adults about mental health, and how every one of us can be the hope that someone needs. To find out more, we caught up with Mike after the tour… By Deepika Sulekh COP Y WRITER
26
I Am Hope came about with the idea of spreading a message of hope to young people. 80% of kids who have a major crisis in their life never ask for help because they don’t know who is safe to talk to and are worried about being judged. So we began talking to them – about depression, suicide and other mental health issues. As part of this we created an identifier that someone is safe – our wristband, which signifies to anyone that you won’t judge, gossip, ask questions or try and fix someone, but instead will offer unconditional love and hope. We first launched in 2017 in schools and the uptake was remarkable, almost like something people were crying out for. We then decided it needs to be much bigger, so we planned the national tour.
What was your main goal for the tour? The whole Key to Life Charitable Trust goal is to empower young people and come up with solutions to their problems. Previously, every conference I went to, to identify problems with young people, had no young people attending, but adults talking about youth’s problems and how to solve them. We never knew what young people’s problems were because we never talked to them, so the purpose of this tour was to talk to them, help them identify their problems, because they felt like they’re
not being heard and nobody’s listening to them, which has helped us create a platform where they can safely put forward their solutions and we can use our resources and connections to make them happen.
What was the response like here in Taupō? It was packed. Fantastic. We came off the Desert Road after a four-hour ride, saturated, cold and wet, but were instantly warmed by the people and support there. The feedback and enthusiasm was overwhelming.
What do you love about Taupō? I have always loved playing at the Wairakei Golf course, public and private, both are magnificent. I’ve been coming to Taupō since the 1960s, and over that time, even with the build-up of tourism, it’s still got that unique flavour to it and never lost its rural Taupō feel. There’s always something to do, you’re spoilt for choice.

Say hello to friendly bacteria. Probiotics found in yoghurt are the healthy bacteria that keep your gut and digestive system intact and free of germs.
Loaded with vitamin B and antioxidants, mushrooms increase your production of white blood cells, making them more aggressive especially when you need to fight infections.

Do You Know Any of Our ‘Superheroes’?
Everything you need for your kitchen
We have over 300 of them living in the Taupō and Turangi communities. They’re a fairly humble bunch. They go about their day just like regular people – but to us they are superheroes.
G
uessed it yet? They are our amazing volunteers – and over the period of 17th to 23rd of June (National Volunteer Week) we’re taking the opportunity to recognise, reward and celebrate the immeasurable contribution they make to Lake Taupō Hospice. All hospice services are provided free of charge to our patients and their families. And by having such a dedicated bunch of volunteers these services are bigger, better and more meaningful. From being the very foundation stone of Lake Taupō Hospice through to the organisation we have become, volunteers have been, are and will always be the central thread in how we care for and support those in our communities who need our help. Our volunteers are a marvellous, eclectic mix of dedication, skills, talents and energy, young and old. Sometimes
they are supported to volunteer by their employers, sometimes they help out just for a project and sometimes they are with us for a lifetime. Irrespective of how they arrive, how long they stay or whatever role they do for us, we love our volunteers and absolutely couldn’t succeed without them. So now it’s our turn to shine a spotlight on these superheroes; paint a big ‘thank you’ in the sky and celebrate them for saving the day! Like all good superheroes they might prefer to keep their capes out of sight – but we know who they are, the superpowers they bring to Lake Taupō Hospice – and now you do too!

WHAT ' S TH E
We take bees for granted, yet a huge part of what we consume is given by them in one way or another. It’s from them we get the goodness of honey, many uses of beeswax and the help our fruits and vegetables need to grow. Bees are an invaluable part of our life and our environment, and even though they’ve been a part of our planet for 40 million years, we often don’t realise how much they matter. By Deepika Sulekh COPYWRITER
NATURE'S GOLD The goodness of honey
H
oney is the ultimate power food, and has been used as a medicine for years – thanks to its many nutrients, antioxidants and immune-boosting abilities. The health benefits are endless, including the ability to prevent cancer and heart disease, reduce gastrointestinal disorders, reducing coughs and throat irritations, and strengthening your immune system – just to name a few. To really get the goodness from honey, make sure it is pure and raw. Raw honey has all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that you won’t find in refined honey. Manuka honey, one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey, is produced in New Zealand by bees
32
pollinating the Manuka bush. It’s different because of its amazing nutritional profile, with nutritional content up to four times that of normal honey, making it a strong antibacterial with medicinal properties known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).
did you know? One bee needs to visit around 4 million flowers to make 1 kg of honey.
did you know?
THE BENEFIT OF BEES
Bees pollinate over 80 % of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. One in three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees.
Beeswax
B
eeswax, the natural wax that honey bees make, is used to build the comb structures inside their hives. Thanks to its many benefits and especially skin nourishing properties, there’s an abundance of ways you can use it for yourself and around the home. One of the most common uses of beeswax is in cosmetic products, like lip balms, moisturisers and soaps. The natural touch of beeswax creates a barrier that seals moisture into the skin, protects from environmental toxins and still allows it to breathe, making it an effective alternative to your usual store-bought, chemical-based cosmetics. Not just for the skin, other uses for beeswax include making candles, vapor rubs for cold or flu relief, polishes, coatings, and much more.
Helping your garden
S
o many of us can’t stand the sight, thought or buzz of them when we step out into our gardens, but without bees, it’s unlikely your garden would survive, because your plants and flowers need them to reproduce. You may not realise it, but a lot of the work is being done for you, so help the bees by gardening organically using bee friendly sprays, growing plants with ample pollen and nectar, and leave some dandelion around for them to forage on. A little consideration on your part will keep your garden happy and thriving.
Pollination
T
hese tiny creatures are nature’s greatest pollinators – skimming from flower to flower, they spread the pollen that helps produce fruit, vegetables, flowers, nuts, seeds, beans and the majority of our agriculture. The work they do helps keep our economy, agriculture and environment functioning.
SUPPORT LOCAL: KEITH'S HONEY
K
eith’s Honey is lovingly produced in a small family-owned-and-operated company based in Taupō. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality, pure-NZ honey from the hive to you with passion and dedication. All our honey is produced, harvested, extracted and bottled right here in Taupō.
Our simple tips for a ‘bee-friendly’ lifestyle: • Install a water feature or birdbath in your garden – honey bees do not get sufficient water from nectar alone, this will encourage bees to stay longer in your garden and help pollinate your plants. • Plant colourful flowers – honey bees have the ability to see in ultraviolet light, blues and yellows are the best as they are the easiest for the bees to find.
• Know the good weeds – clover and dandelion are a great source of food for the bees, wildflowers are rich in pollen and provide protein to strengthen bee colonies. • Avoid pesticides – they are toxic and can be fatal to bees, try to go with nontoxic or organic ranges and help save the bees. • Buy local – buying honey that comes straight from local beekeepers encourages sustainability.

3) Reach out-of-town buyers We all know Taupō is a yearround destination and winter is a perfect time to reach out-of-town buyers. Over 50 percent of my sales from the past year have been to people relocating to Taupō (or investing in holiday homes). 4) Competitive buyer bidding Limited properties on the market means there is less choice for buyers, giving vendors the opportunity of achieving a premium sale price through competitive buyer bidding – of course managed by a campaign specialist. wine
Is there a better way to enjoy the cool winter months than sipping rich, warming, red wine? From the seductive Pinot Noir to spicy Shiraz, powerful Cabernet and rich, satisfying Port, all of these come into their own over the cooler months.
Seductive Pinot Noir Much is made of the seductive power of Pinot Noir. Those who are under its spell go by the name of ‘Pinotphile’ and tend to only drink Pinot Noir. This beguiling grape is a native of Burgundy, France but has found a new home in New Zealand with Central Otago all but dedicated to it. These tend to be richly fruited with fine detailing of spice, herb and velvet tannin which is seen in the Peregrine Pinot Noir.
Spicy Shiraz/Syrah As you can see, these two are one in the same variety. Syrah is the French name for it, whereas Shiraz is the Australian. In New Zealand we use Syrah, not to be special but just to differentiate our Syrah from Aussie Shiraz which is much riper and fuller like the cult Classic Chocolate Box Shiraz and the slightly crazy Take it to the Grave Shiraz, whilst Kiwi Syrah lovers choose the Craggy Range Syrah for its pure fruit, pepper spice and smooth tannin.
Craggy Range Syrah The Bistro, Tipsy Trout, Grill @ 42, Vine Eatery
Cabernet Sauvignon/ Franc, Merlot and Malbec The Bordeaux quartet; as the old Bordeaux philosophy goes, why make four good wines when you can make one great wine? Although there are seriously good examples of each on their own, these wines are testament to the power of the blend Amancaya Malbec Cabernet, Mills Reef Reserve Cabernet Merlot and Te Awanga Merlot Cabernet Franc.
Port The great Portuguese fortified was great for sailors during the exploration age and even better as a nightcap on a cold winter’s night. Kopke, the world’s oldest Port house, covers the styles brilliantly from nutty Tawnys to fruity Rubys, complex LBVs and vintage ports, and even the rare white port, all pairing perfectly well with cheese and chocolate.
The lesser known There are many other tempting options if you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new; like Sangiovese of the famed Chianti and inky Nero d’Avola from Sicily. Also Tempranillo in all its guises from Spain and bigger than Texas Zinfandel from California.

day out

T
here are so many ways to make it special, it doesn’t have to be the traditional breakfast in bed or buying him more of those hardly-ever-worn ties. Here’s some ideas on how you can make the most of the day with what we have…
Get outdoors There’s nothing like some fresh air and good company to lighten the mood. Take his mind off the hustle with something like a round of golf, bike ride, or hike and top it off with a lakeside picnic and his favourite beers at the end of the day.

On the lake
A day out on the lake is pretty much always a winning idea. Dads love fishing, well, most of them, and if not, there’s be plenty of other ways you can spend a day on the water – getting on a wakeboard, kayak, boat, or just jump in!
Head up the mountain Did you know Mt Ruapehu is open until 22 October? What a great opportunity to take Dad out for a day on the snow. Even if he’s not into skiing or snowboarding, think about getting him a lesson (if he wants to learn), or the other activities available like the hikes, sightseeing, or a dinner with amazing views.
Gift an experience Surprise him with something a little bit different, an experience he will remember for years to come. Does he have a need for speed? Take him for a thrill ride, check out the local racetrack (and our bucket list article about it on page 15). He’ll love everything about it: the cars, the speed and the power. Or local events on this winter like the Winter Festival, Mardi Gras, or let him choose, he’ll appreciate the thought (even if you don’t enjoy it) and the time you’ve spent together.

Central Carpet Care –
Your Mess Is Our Problem
Our aim is to deliver our customers a punctual, reliable, and competitive electrical service. Your job. Our priority.
Introducing Phill from Central Carpet Care, your carpet/upholstery cleaning and methamphetamine decontamination expert!
W
ith positive meth tests being an increasingly common occurrence in the property industry, you need to be able to rely on an expert for independent and honest advice on your test results. Central Carpet Care have long been regarded as the ‘go-to’ for this worrying contamination issue. Not only does Phill carry out this work in the wider Taupō region but he has also been frequenting many other locations nationally to assist home owners in successfully remediating their properties. The publication of the NZ standards for testing and remediation of meth was released in October 2017 and this has seen Central Carpet Care thrive whilst other have bailed out of the industry.
Phill says, ‘The biggest thing is not to panic’, most contamination issues can be fixed without ripping out walls and demolishing one of your biggest assets. He urges you to pick up the phone and ask for a free assessment of your results. The majority of his work is carried out at rates far less than others are charging in the industry and sometimes it is as quick and easy as a noninvasive decontamination clean, re-testing, gaining full clearance and away you go! Unfortunately, with all of the scaremongering surrounding meth contamination and the mixed messages that Mr Google will result, you really need to talk to the experts and you will very quickly see why Central Carpet Care are one of the most trusted remediators in this field.
Should meth become an issue in one of your properties, give Central Carpet Care a call on 0800 111 585 – discretion assured! And as their motto states ... “Your mess is our problem”.

New developments The new Keehan Drive industrial subdivision is complete with many sites already built and operating, a great example of how a trade zone area can have a modern cosmetic appeal while still having a trade focus. Along with Ashwood Park, it is exciting to see how these developments can really open up the opportunity for existing businesses, perhaps in the CBD or surrounding areas to consider their move into a larger site. With the relocation of the ‘big boys’, the area has enjoyed the increased volume of visitors to the area. Its location and close proximity to the Eastern Arterial Bypass, makes moving product in and out of the area highly efficient.

Boosting business
The Rakaunui area continues to provide a thriving industrial base accommodating a vast cross-section of industries.
With the current business confidence we are seeing around Taupō, we hope that these new industrial sites provide attractive options to encourage businesses in the larger metropolitan areas to consider Taupō as a cost effective, thriving community to move into. In the original part of the industrial area – Matai, Manuka and Miro Streets – many businesses are continuing to be improved and updated, with many receiving facelifts and therefore lifting the appearance and image of the older established industrial area. The Miro Street and Broadlands Road intersection has now been cleared ready for development giving the opportunity for larger sites to be utilised by businesses requiring a larger space footprint.
