WELCOME TO THE BAY OF PLENTY You may fall in love instantly with this region that lives up to its name, but we suggest you read through this guide and take your time to really get to enjoy this sunny part of Aotearoa.
Bay of Plenty Visitor Guide
The coastal Bay of Plenty is located along the pristine Pacific Coast Highway, and takes in 125km of white sand beaches. Stretching from Waihi Beach to New Zealand’s best kept secret, Ohope, the expansive area offers a mix of outdoor activities, scenic attractions, culture and top dining experiences. The region encompasses a number of towns and cities all offering their own unique lifestyles and wonderful holiday destinations.

For about 700 years Maori people have been living here; the local iwi (tribes) arrived by waka (sea-faring canoes) that voyaged from the Polynesian ancestral homeland of Hawaiki and landed in Maketu, Mauao and Whakatane. When Captain Cook sailed in on the Endeavour in 1769, he named the stretch of coast between the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape the Bay of Plenty. He knew what he was talking about; this is a region offering abundance from the land and the sea.
»There’s plenty for those chasing adventure and looking to create some unique holiday memories« But Cook could never have envisaged the variety of funfilled activities and bountiful produce available along this stretch of coast today. From New Zealand’s only active marine volcano and sites of national historic importance, stunning coastal walkways, beaches and harbour; to a thriving kiwifruit industry, the region has plenty to offer. Officially the sunniest place in New Zealand, the Bay of Plenty is renowned for its clear blue

TE PUKE From Tauranga i-SITE: Te Puke 24.6km (25mins)
Te Puke ’Goodness Grows Here’ sums up the natural fertility and abundance of this region which produces kiwifruit, manuka honey, citrus and avocado. The first quarter acre of kiwifruit was planted in Te Puke in 1937. Nowadays, the majority of New Zealand’s kiwifruit is grown in the district, and the town even has a kiwifruit horticultural park. Te Puke’s main street is a thriving boutique retail area with free parking and the town is within easy reach of Bay of Plenty beaches.

tourist mecca of Rotorua and the seaside resort town of Tauranga. For the genuine rural town experience, spend some leisurely time in Te Puke, meeting the friendly local shopkeepers and townsfolk. For those seeking natural experiences, there is native bush, hidden rivers and scenic waterfalls to discover - and over 25kms of deserted white sandy beach to explore. Located about 15 minutes drive from Te Puke, the tiny seaside village of Maketu Beach is the landing place of the Arawa people and is known for its stunning estuary and ocean beach – a surfer's haven. Take a stroll along the sands, play a round of golf, go surfing, swimming or horse riding, or sample one of the famous Maketu Pies, still based on an old family recipe. To the south, Paengaroa village, also known as ‘The Junction’, has a gallery where you can browse local artists’ work.

WHAKATANE & OHOPE From Tauranga i-SITE: Whakatane 87.8km (68mins) Ohope 93.8km (75mins)
At the mouth of the Whakatane River, just a 1 hour drive southeast of Tauranga, lies the sunny coastal town of Whakatane, the main centre of the Eastern Bay of Plenty and recognised Kiwi Capital of the World.
Whakatane & Ohope
With a spectacular location overlooking the Pacific Ocean and officially the sunniest destination in New Zealand, Whakatane is naturally a hub for game fishing and marine sports, where keen anglers will find plenty of fishing charters to take them to abundant fishing grounds. During summer months, the sea waters around Whakatane are teaming with marine mammals so take a tour and swim with dolphins or watch whales and seals at play.
50
»Discover the region’s rich Maori heritage with authentic marae experiences, educational walks or an adventure to Whakaari (White Island)«
The friendly town is steeped in Maori history, so wander the heritage hikoi trail or spend at least an afternoon discovering Te Koputu – the new exhibition centre that includes galleries and museum displays of remarkable artefacts. Offshore, the smoldering volcano of White Island (Whakaari) is New Zealand’s only marine volcano, and local operators will take you on a guided tour to view the volcano’s steaming vents, bubbling pools, a crater lake and the old Sulphur mine. It breathes, roars and hisses 800°C toxic gases that are released from cracks in the ground, and gas fumeroles (vents). Also visible from the coast is Moutohora (Whale Island), a wildlife island sanctuary providing refuge for endangered birds (including kiwi), a seal colony and flourishing native fauna. Moutohora is also home to New Zealand’s largest colony of mutton birds (over 160,000!) and they can be viewed at night from May to December.
HIGHLIGHTS & MUST DO'S Whakatane ĵĵ ĵĵ
ĵĵ
ĵĵ
Take a boat or helicopter tour of Whakaari (White Island). Walk some or all of the 18km Nga Tapuwae O Toi walkway, around Whakatane Heads to Ohope Beach. Be welcomed at Mataatua Wharenui, New Zealand’s Maori meeting house that is now home after 130 years of being exhibited overseas. Swim with the dolphins, take an eco-tour or walk around Moutohora Island Sanctuary.
Ohope Beach ĵĵ
ĵĵ
Take a walk in the scenic reserve and hear the call of wild kiwi – the result of one of NZ’s most successful conservation projects. Golf at Ohope International Golf Course, a scenic treat between beach and harbour and rated one of New Zealand's top links courses .
Ohiwa ĵĵ ĵĵ
Take a night bush walk to find a large glowworm grotto. Enjoy safe boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming on Ohiwa Harbour or take a daytime or moonlight guided kayak tour.
Murupara and Te Urewera region ĵĵ
ĵĵ
Learn to trout fish and experience a world-class fishing destination. Take a walk amongst ancient native forests filled with native birds and spectacular waterfalls. Mountain bike stunning native bush tracks or take a guided walk or horse trek through the forest.
Head over the hills to Ohope Beach, a popular beach resort with an 11km stretch of sandy shore between the Whakatane Heads and the entrance to Ohiwa Harbour. To the east of Ohope is the township of Opotiki, and beyond that the unspoilt coastline of the East Cape.
Just 45 minutes to the south, near the small settlement of Murupara, are the mighty Te Urewera National Park and Whirinaki Forest. Both parks are spectacular, with towering native trees, abundant bird life, rivers teeming with trout and walking and mountain biking tracks for you to explore.

WHITE ISLAND TOURS
Whakatane & Ohope
Cruise across the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty to White Island – New Zealand’s most active volcano. After donning hard hats and gas masks, guides will lead you on an exploration of the crater. Experience roaring fumaroles, sparkling sulphur chimneys, bubbling pools of mud and the spectacular main crater. The vivid hues of yellow and orange resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island make it a photographer’s dream. Before returning there may be time for a swim from the boat before being served a light packed lunch which can be enjoyed while viewing the outer walls of the island. Road Rules in New Zealand
56
New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle to wear a seatbelt and it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on open roads is 100km/h, 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. Dial *555 on cell phones for nonemergency accidents within 24 hours. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
