USEFUL INFORMATION MAPS
welcome to
THE BAY OF PLENTY Generations of New Zealanders regard the Bay of Plenty as their 'happy place'. A much-loved holiday destination where genuine Kiwi memories are made. With its clear blue skies, white sand beaches and stunning natural beauty, this coastal region is where you'd find the North Island's heart – near the top and slightly over to one side. By following the spectacular Pacific Coast Highway you'll encounter idyllic, friendly towns right along this 125km stretch of coastline, from Waihi Beach in the west through to Ohope in the east, with the thriving city of Tauranga sitting right in the middle.
Bay of Plenty Visitor Guide
The Bay of Plenty provides easy access to top tourist attractions including White Island – New Zealand's only active marine volcano. Step foot on this geothermal wonder and experience nature's raw power up close. Hobbiton's acclaimed movie set is a short 45min drive away, and Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland are all within easy reach.
4
Our prime location and sensational climate attracts holidaymakers year-round. In summer Mount Maunganui's main beach is the place to be seen, while those who prefer quiet strolls along the sand and plenty of space can spread out at picture-perfect locations along the coast including Bowentown, Papamoa, Matata and Ohope. The original Maori inhabitants first stepped ashore here about 700 years ago, having arrived in waka (sea-faring canoes) from their Polynesian ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. Four centuries later, Captain Cook sailed past on the Endeavour and named this region the 'Bay of Plenty' due to its abundant resources. That description still rings true today. New Zealand's best kiwifruit, avocados and manuka honey products are produced
here, alongside the freshest kaimoana (seafood). Tauranga is home to New Zealand largest port and has also become a leading cruise ship destination, with over 80 international cruise liners berthing here each season. Visitors to the Bay of Plenty can enjoy magnificent walkways,
sparkling harbours, Maori culture, adrenaline-fueled adventures, boutique shopping and a thriving café and restaurant scene. For more inspiration on what to see and do while you're here, browse through this guide or visit www.bayofplentynz.com

TAURANGA Few cities in the world have a waterfront location as wonderful as this. Tauranga means the 'place of rest or anchorage' and both locals and visitors are drawn to the city's sparking harbour and magnificent views. New Zealand's fifth largest city is continuing to develop its downtown waterfront precinct. This is a popular place to stroll along in the sunshine, enjoy the children's playground and splash fountains, attend openair movie nights, and revel in events like the 'Winter Nights, Winter Lights' festival or community fireworks displays. A series of Hairy Maclary bronze statue sculptures take pride of place on Tauranga's waterfront, and the string of nearby restaurants, bars and cafes enjoy an enviable location along The Strand. The Wharf St Dining Precinct is another great place to grab a bite, with alfresco dining and wharf-themed furniture creating a special ambiance.

TE PUKE From Tauranga i-SITE: Te Puke 24.6km (25mins)
Te Puke is famous for producing some of New Zealand’s most loved exports – delicious kiwifruit, creamy avocados and healing manuka honey products. The first quarter acre of kiwifruit was planted here in 1937 and now Te Puke is at the very heart of our $1.5 billion kiwifruit industry. The fertile soil and warm climate also provide ideal growing conditions for avocados, one of nature’s genuine superfoods. Millions of avocados are grown on Te Puke orchards and sold in Australia, Asia, the Pacific and the US every year.
Te Puke
The motto of this horticultural powerhouse is 'Goodness Grows Here' and feijoas and citrus orchards can also be found alongside dairy and sheep farms.
52
»The fertile land around Te Puke supports dairy farming, fruit growing (citrus and kiwifruit) and market gardening.«
Te Puke is a thriving rural town located inland from the coast between Tauranga and Rotorua. In Te Puke’s main street you’ll find a number of boutique retail stores and free parking right outside. Locals will greet you with a warm smile and a friendly welcome, providing a snapshot of life in rural New Zealand. The seaside village of Maketu is a short 15 minute drive away, and is where the Te Arawa canoe landed when Maori first arrived on these shores. Maketu offers sweeping views along a rugged coastline and is a popular place to fish, surf or have lunch by the water’s edge. South of Te Puke is Paengaroa – home to leading manuka honey producer, Comvita. Visit their headquarters and be amazed by the medicinal properties this sought-after honey possesses. Take a guided tour and step inside their virtual beehive to discover the fascinating world of the honeybee. You can also sample and purchase Comvita’s wide range of manuka honey products which contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Don’t forget to try a delicious manuka honey icecream before you leave.

WHAKATANE & OHOPE From Tauranga i-SITE: Whakatane 87.8km (68mins) Ohope 93.8km (75mins)
Whakatane is the gateway to one of the Bay of Plenty's most popular tourist attractions –White Island (Whakaari). This seething geothermal giant lies 49km offshore and is New Zealand's only marine volcano. Billowing steam is often seen on the horizon and guided tours depart daily from Whakatane by boat or helicopter. Most of the volcano sits beneath the sea, so you can disembark directly into its live crater. This is an amazing chance to step foot on an alien-looking landscape and see nature's raw power up close.
Whakatane & Ohope
Explore White Island's bubbling pools, crater lake, roaring steam vents and abandoned sulphur mine. This is an extreme environment so hard hats and gas masks are provided, and strict safely rules must be followed. Another great place to visit offshore is Whale Island (Moutohora). This wildlife sanctuary is home to New Zealand's largest colony of mutton birds plus other endangered birds, plants and reptiles.
56
In Whakatane itself you'll find the Bay of Plenty's cultural heart. This town has a rich Maori history and you can immerse yourself in authentic cultural experiences here. Visit Mataatua Wharenui – the most well-travelled Maori meeting house in New Zealand. This intricately carved wooden building spent more than 130 years away in Australia and the UK before returning home to Whakatane. Feel the spiritual presence of Maori ancestors as you enjoy a digital lightshow combined with cultural songs and stories that will leave your spine tingling. Whakatane is known as the 'kiwi capital of the world' and is home to many of these rare flightless birds which have become New Zealand's national symbol. You can listen for their calls at night as they scuttle through nearby bush and reserves. Keen anglers love coming here all year round. Chase big game fish offshore, or simply cast your line off the town's wharf. The surrounding ocean is teaming with marine life so book a tour to swim with dolphins or seals in the warm summer months.
Over the hill from Whakatane you'll find a magical seaside town. Ohope Beach was recently voted New Zealand's most loved beach in a nationwide AA travel poll and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot. Further east you'll find the townships of Ohiwa and Opotiki, or head inland to explore the mighty Te Urewera National Park and Whirinaki Forest.

Cruise across the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty to White Island – New Zealand’s most active volcano. After donning hard hats and gas masks, guides will lead you on an exploration of the crater. The vivid hues of yellow and orange resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island make it a photographer’s dream. Before returning there may be time for a swim from the boat before being served a light packed lunch which can be enjoyed while viewing the outer walls of the island. The return journey often provides the opportunity for dolphin or whale watching.

Road Rules in New Zealand
62
New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle to wear a seatbelt and it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on open roads is 100km/h, 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. Dial *555 on cell phones for nonemergency accidents within 24 hours. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
