Totally unique to New Zealand, Mudtopia visitors can customise their festival experience to be exactly what they want it to be – from high-energy mud action to live entertainment to luxurious spa and wellness activities.

What is the Mudtopia Festival?

When is Mudtopia?

Rotorua’s world-famous natural geothermal mud will be the undisputed star of the inaugural Mudtopia Festival, a threeday event held for the first time in December 2017 where mud, movement and music collide to create unforgettable experiences.

Mudtopia is taking over Arawa Park in central Rotorua from Friday 1 December – Sunday 3 December. Tickets go on sale early July so get a group of friends or the family together and get ready for a weekend like no other.

Inspired by one of the world’s most unusual and immersive festivals – the Boryeong Mud Festival held annually for the past 20 years in Korea – Mudtopia is set to become a ‘must do’ event on the global festival calendar.

What’s happening? Whether you want to get amongst the multitude of muddy options, unwind with wellness and spa experiences, toss the kids into the Mud Kids zone or enjoy world-class live music, Mudtopia’s line up of activities, entertainment and attractions really does have something for everyone. Cover every inch of yourself in the Mud Arena where inflatable mud slides, pools and obstacle courses mean muddy mayhem, or take on your mates in the Mud Games area with irresistible mud challenges like slip ‘n slide, wrestling, super soakers and even a horizontal bungy. You’ll leave grinning ear to ear. Live entertainment from some of New Zealand’s best performers on the Mud Stage throughout the festival will culminate in a world-class international act headlining the Saturday night concert. Chill out on the lawn in front of the stage throughout the day and enjoy a picnic and bite to eat from the street food vendors and licensed bar nearby.

In the mood for something a bit more zen-like with less mud involved? The onsite Mud Day Spa also offers pop-up mud treatments like facials, mud wraps and massages from many of Rotorua’s most prominent wellness and beauty brands. Unwind and pamper yourself or grab your friends for an amazing ‘girls day out’ and leave Mudtopia clean and relaxed. Keeping dry on rainy days You can never plan what the weather will do on a weekend away – especially in winter! Because of this we’ve got some great ideas just in case you arrive to Rotorua with rain pattering on the windscreen. Fortunately this is a true year-round holiday destination and there’s a heap of great ways to have fun whilst keeping warm and dry. Cruising the railway Not many people are lucky enough to have ridden in the cab of a locomotive, but it’s this the kind of unique experience that inspired RailCruising. It’s the freedom of being in your own RailCruiser with nothing ahead but the unobstructed curve of the rail and the famous sound of clickety clack beneath you. Travel through the beautiful Dansey Scenic Reserve on the steep 1:35 gradient railway in your own selfdrive RailCruiser. The stunning 360° views of the forest, lakes and rolling farmland are just as impressive under the moody gloom of rain clouds, and RailCruisers are designed for all weather with clear drop down sides to keep you dry.

Devour the delights of India Indian food is warm and comforting, even if you prefer it mild. Steam is the newest restaurant on the block and is Rotorua’s first 100% pure vegetarian Indian restaurant. Regardless of whether or not you’re a vegetarian, you’ll love the authentic flavours of India at Steam. Relish some of the finest delicacies from all different corners of India – but don’t worry, they also have a butter paneer masala which is the perfect substitute for those of us that love a butter chicken! Vegetarians can rejoice and omnivores can expand their horizons while falling in love with the lip smacking delights of Steam.

Embrace the mud in a 4WD While Rotorua’s mud is famous for its health and beauty properties and is most commonly applied to the skin, you might be tempted to apply it to your very own self-drive offroader instead. The muddier the better for a crazy four wheel driving experience! Off Road New Zealand’s Bush Safari lets you get behind the wheel on a rugged and remote trail in thick native forest. On holiday – Ria Vandervis When Ria is not on set as an actor on Shortland Street she runs a printed apparel and promo products business Konstruct (konstruct.com) and also works as a marriage celebrant (riavandervis.com) …all while studying a Diploma of Interior Design. With such a busy schedule, Ria and her partner were due for a getaway. Visiting for a weekend late autumn, she loved her very first visit to Rotorua. The only complaint was that she couldn’t stay longer…

What activity would you say is a must do for people visiting Rotorua this winter? I would highly recommend the Rotorua Canopy Tours eco zip lining tour. It is a great mix of adventure and education. I particularly loved the conservation side of it – but I would stress that it is cold in the forest, so wear really warm clothes.

What is your favourite restaurant in Rotorua? We loved our meal at Terrace Kitchen. The service was amazing, the food and drinks beautiful and the fit out was so chic and comfortable. I would highly recommend it.

What would you recommend people do to relax in Rotorua? To relax in Rotorua I would take a stroll around the Government Gardens or check out the Okere Falls.

Would you recommend that other couples visit Rotorua? I would highly recommend Rotorua for a couple’s weekend away. There is so much to see and do - whether you are a nature lover, foodie, adrenalin junkie or just want to chill out.

EXPERIENCE REMARKABLE DEPTH OF FLAVOUR AT STRATOSFARE Set amongst the stars atop Mount Ngongotaha, Skyline’s Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar is home to some of New Zealand’s best award-winning cuisine, including its new slow roasted beef which is cooked to perfection. EXPERIENCE THE FINEST ROAST BEEF Well-cooked, well-rested pure angus beef has become a hero dish at Stratosfare. Chefs first apply Stratosfare’s beef rub, before cooking the meat for 35 minutes at a high temperature. Each cut is then slowly cooked for 24 hours where the temperature, humidity and airflow is carefully monitored, creating the perfect environment for meat to develop to the highest standard. “This precise and exact process maximises the flavours, and at the same time creates succulent and juicy pieces to the very last cut.” WINTER NIGHTS AT STRATOSFARE As you ascend the Gondola to Stratosfare, take in the views of Rotorua’s city lights as it illuminates Lake Rotorua in the distance. Stratosfare’s famous seafood chowder and freshly baked artisan breads awaits you, followed by an à la carte buffet designed to tantalise your taste buds with delectable seasonal salads, antipasto selection and delicured meats. Head over to the tidal mussel tank for the freshest steamed mussels you’ll taste and try one of the mussel recipes on offer developed in conjunction with 2014 Masterchef winners Kasey and Karena Bird. If you’re looking for something special, the grill offers a selection of steak, venison, lamb, crayfish and Morton Bay Bugs. Let the chef know how you’d like

From crème brûlée to velvety mousse, made-to-order crepes and freshly made sorbet, the endless options will have you going back for more. WINE TO MATCH At the base of Mount Ngongotaha is Rotorua’s very own Volcanic Hills Winery, and at the top terminal lies the Tasting Room. Head up early before dinner to soak in the view of Lake Rotorua and beyond as you sip on your favourite wine or experience a tasting of Volcanic Hill’s full collection. While you dine at Stratosfare, ask the friendly wait staff to match your meal to a Volcanic Hills wine for the perfect accompaniment to a magical evening. VALUING ROTORUA’S LAKESIDE LIFESTYLE Buying your own slice of “Famously Rotorua”? Then call Adrienne Mikkelsen. She’s an expert at valuing all of the city’s residential, lifestyle and lakes properties, whether it be a purchase for permanent living investment or a holiday home. Anyone buying into today’s increasingly vibrant Rotorua scene needs a local expert offering local advice. Adrienne should top that list. She’s Property InDepth’s Bay of Plenty manager and a fully registered property valuer. She isn’t a real estate agent. She doesn’t sell properties. Instead, she provides buyers and sellers independent property valuations on the full range of residential, investment, lifestyle and lake properties spread throughout the Rotorua District, the Bay of Plenty and Taupo.

Since she began her valuation career in Rotorua in 1997, Adrienne has had her finger on the pulse of Rotorua’s property scene. She joined Property InDepth in 2009 and is one of the many valuers it has working throughout New Zealand.

Many of Property InDepth’s happy clients comment on how “professional, obliging and good to deal with” Adrienne is and how she’s given them “first-class service”. That’s not surprising. She’s a real peopleperson and thoroughly enjoys helping anyone achieve their property goals.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR YOUTH, OUR FUTURE Thinking about a career change or upskilling? Are you passionate about the quality of education for our youngest students? Teachers need the right mix of competencies to work effectively in 21st century learning environments and to enable children to develop the knowledge, skills and values to be successful in an increasingly complex world. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject area, you are eligible to apply to study the one-year Master of Teaching Early Childhood Education. Earning the qualification leads to teacher registration with Education Council of New Zealand and can put you

in the driver’s seat of change and improvement through research and implementation. Incorporating a mix of theory with practical learning, you will spend most of your time in the realistic contexts of early childhood settings with the guidance of highly experienced senior teachers. Classroom learning ensures practice is linked to research, theory and the national bicultural curriculum, Te Whāriki. Apply now to begin your studies in January 2018 with the Bay of Plenty’s largest tertiary institute, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, in beautiful Rotorua.
