Crankworx Rotorua & EWS GIANT Toa Enduro
British & Irish Lions vs New Zealand Maori All Blacks
Crankworx Rotorua is a festival of extreme sports action. Whether you love to mountain bike or just want to witness greatness, you, your friends and your family will be blown away by the best riders on the planet.
This June Rotorua will host the unofficial ‘fourth test’ of the tour. The proud British and Irish Lions meet the NZ Maori All Blacks for a shot at redemption after losing to the Maori in 2005. This game is going to be massive.
The mind-blowing aerial antics of the Slopestyle riders, the heart-stopping speed at which the downhill riders attack the course and the fun, festive atmosphere of the crowd are just some of the reasons people come to Crankworx Rotorua from around the globe. These 9 days of competition, concerts and the best mountain biking culture create a must-see event, the likes of which New Zealand had never seen before.
Beyond just the game, Rotorua will welcome the Barmy Army for a festival of rugby. Thursday prior the Rotorua Night Market will be colourfully themed around the match and Friday evening the city will celebrate Matariki with a free lantern parade and fireworks bonanza. On game day thousands of fans and locals can head to the Village Green at midday in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest haka, after which two international women’s tests will raise the curtain to the game; Australia vs Canada 3pm at Small Bone Park and the Black Ferns vs England at the Rotorua International Stadium before the big game.
With free trials on bikes and gear, a kids’ pump track and a huge expo and food area at Skyline Rotorua, there is something for everybody to enjoy. Make sure you mark your calendar and join in the festivities.

OKERE FALLS STRONG BEER FESTIVAL 2017 Praise the monks! The Okere Falls Strong Beer Festival is back in true German style over Queen’s Birthday Weekend! Join us for two amazing nights of beertasting, bonfires, and live music Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June 4th 2017. OKERE FALLS STRONG BEER FESTIVAL HISTORY In winter, when it’s still too cold to enjoy a lager or pilsner, the beers of choice are dark, strong, malty and warming. These beers were first produced during the ‘Strong Beer Season’ (Starkbierzeit), a tradition begun by 17th century Paulaner monks brewing what they called ‘Holy Father Beer’ (Sankt Vater Bier).
2017 will be a plastic free event. No drinks or food will be served on or in single use plastic, as every year New Zealand discards 220,000 tonnes of plastic – about 60kg per person! Only 8% of that gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, is incinerated or becomes litter. For more information and to support their cause, visit their Facebook page “Say NO to Plastic”.
During Lent, when fasting monks were only allowed liquids, this developed into a dark beer style. They dubbed the stuff “Flüssiges Brot” (liquid bread) as it helped them survive their 40 days of Lent-fasting with full bellies and good spirits. Bavarian rulers began joining in the tapping of the first Starkbier kegs in the early 1700s and the first public strong beer festival was in 1751.
BRING A FRIEND... OR TWO! For the best experience, the team at Okere Falls Store recommend coming with a friend or two and tasting your way through their Strong Beer Passport, including a stunning line-up of fantastic beers. Ciders, wines and non-alcoholic drinks will also be on sale.
GET AMONGST THE FESTIVITIES Come relive history and enjoy a long weekend of delicious brews, sizzling bratwurst sausages, hearty stroganoff and hot apple strudel around the warming bonfires. As it wouldn’t be a night out at the Okere Falls Store without the best in live music, an eclectic mix of local and national bands will be playing over the 2 nights from 5pm to keep you dancing. SAY NO TO PLASTIC It also wouldn’t be the Okere Falls Store without a stand on sustainability. They are pleased to announce Strong Beerfest

“Since 2009, Saturn’s rings were turned edge-on towards earth, making observation quite difficult. The rings have now opened up spectacularly to sky watchers’ views, and are at their maximum tilt towards the earth.” Saturn will be in opposition to the sun on June 15, and will shine its brightest yellow-white light from June 12-17. MAKE A NIGHT OF IT Head up in the gondola early for a gastronomic journey of some of New Zealand’s best award-winning cuisine at Stratosfare Restaurant. Dine with a stunning 180 degree view of Lake Rotorua and watch the sun go down as you spot the first stars. BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL The 60-minute Stargazing tour departs nightly after dark, throughout the year. Session times depend on sunset times so visit www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua to book.
Jupiter is a non-twinkling, dazzling planet to gaze at, so be sure to visit when it’s at its brightest. Saturn Witness the famous rings that surround the planet Saturn through Skyline’s powerful telescopes. Skyline stargazing guide Ken Blackman says 2017 is the best year to capture views of the planet and its rings.

AOTEAROA ADVENTURE TOURS Take a trip down the Ohau Channel, an unforgettable experience our ancestors passed down to us, and we pass on to you. ADVENTURES OF MAORI EXPLORERS Hear the stories of Ihenga, an early Maori explorer famed for naming our lakes and surrounding areas. Start your journey at a local marae (place of meeting) with a whakatau (welcome), hear kaumatua (elder) introduce life and history about the marae, followed by a paddle on a waka rete (traditional form of transport) retracing the footsteps of Ihenga along the picturesque Ohau Channel. Walk the walk of our ancestors, learn about weaving harakeke (flax), hear the unique sounds of a pukaea (war trumpet). Support the lake’s restoration by identifying endangered birds and fish or replanting native plants, leaving your footprint for the future generations. Complete your journey with a succulent steamed hangi meal. EXPLORE MANUPIRUA HOT POOLS An experience with a difference, paddling our waka tete (canoe) or waka taurua (double hull canoe). It begins onshore with an introduction to traditional paddle technique and chants in preparation for your journey across Lake Rotoiti. Listen to stories of Ihenga, a famous Maori explorer and Maori life pre-early European engagement. Help leave your footprint in support of the lake’s restoration program. RotoruaNZ.com
Enjoy a soak in these secluded thermal pools, only accessible by water. Paddle back and enjoy the hot hangi meal that is waiting for you. AWARD WINNING STRATOSFARE RESTAURANT Set amongst the stars atop Mount Ngongotaha, Stratosfare Restaurant is home to some of New Zealand’s best award-winning cuisine, cooked A’ la buffet style for an experience that is unlike anything else. BEEF AND LAMB AWARD 2017 Designed to acknowledge a consistently high standard of beef and lamb cuisine, Stratosfare has collected a 2017 Beef and Lamb excellence award, which has been added to its impressive awards wall. Head chef Fred Kreutmayer credits Stratosfare’s chefs, fresh meat and produce and dry-aging process for the success of the restaurant. “Our chefs come from a diverse range of backgrounds and collectively form a vastly experienced team. What really brings them together is a commitment to culinary excellence and the belief that all good things in life happen around the dining table. “They are constantly pushing the boundaries, demonstrating innovation and creativity every day. “For example, we have recently added a delicious 24-hour slow cooked prime beef rib to the menu, along with a New Zealand king salmon gravlax.” DRY-AGED MEATS For a deliciously tasty and tender piece of meat, Stratosfare carefully dry-ages its premium cuts of pure angus beef. To create the perfect dry-aging environment for meat to develop, a constant temperature, humidity and airflow is maintained. Each cut is aged to a maximum of 24 days or until it is most tender and delicious.
66 | AUTUMN EDITION 2017
The purpose of aging a piece of meat is similar to that of a cheese – as the cut ages, the enzymes purify the meat for a mellow, full bodied and awardwinning flavour. ROTORUA-MADE WINE TO MATCH At the base of Mount Ngongotaha is Rotorua’s very own Volcanic Hills Winery, and at the top terminal lies the Tasting Room. Head up early before dinner to soak in the view of Lake Rotorua and beyond, as you sip on your favourite glass or experience a tasting of Volcanic Hill’s full collection. And while you dine at Stratosfare, ask the friendly wait staff to match your meal to a Volcanic Hills wine for the perfect accompaniment to a magical evening.

ROTORUA’S OWN AWARD-WINNING BREW BREW is owned and operated by Croucher Brewing, Rotorua’s Award Winning Brewery. The natural thermal wonders of Rotorua have made it renowned as the aromatic capital of New Zealand (if not the world), hence our desire to create beautiful rich flavoured aromatic beers. In April 2011 Paul Croucher and Nigel Gregory from Croucher Brewing decided it was time for Rotorua to have its very own craft beer pub. After six weeks of graft we opened BREW, home to the full range of Croucher Brewing beers on tap, along with an ever changing selection of other great NZ craft beers, wines & ciders. Grab a ‘tasting rack’ of any four tap beers if you are having trouble deciding
where to start. Need something to eat with your beer? BREW’s Gastropub style menu is both delicious and affordable. Winner of ‘Outstanding Bar’ at Rotorua Hospitality Awards 2013 and 2014. Regular events include: Tuesday Open Mic Night, BREW Beer Club (first Wednesday of the month), hoppy hour each Friday from 5pm to 7pm, and live music with the Sunday Session. VALUING ROTORUA’S LAKESIDE LIFESTYLE Buying your own slice of “Famously Rotorua”? Then call Adrienne Mikkelsen. She’s an expert at valuing all of the city’s residential, lifestyle and lakes properties, whether it be a purchase for permanent living or a holiday home. Anyone buying into today’s increasingly vibrant Rotorua scene needs a local expert offering local advice. Adrienne should top that list. She’s Property InDepth’s Bay of Plenty manager and a fully registered property valuer. She isn’t a real estate agent. She doesn’t sell properties. Instead, she provides buyers and sellers independent property valuations on the full range of residential, investment, lifestyle and lake properties spread throughout the Rotorua District, the Bay of Plenty and Taupo.
Since she began her valuation career in Rotorua in 1997, Adrienne has had her finger on the pulse of Rotorua’s property scene. She joined Property InDepth in 2009 and is one of the many valuers it has working throughout New Zealand.

Many of Property InDepth’s happy clients comment on how “professional, obliging and good to deal with” Adrienne is and how she’s given them “first-class service”. That’s not surprising. She’s a real peopleperson and thoroughly enjoys helping anyone achieve their property goals.
