TOP RIDES ON TWO WHEELS Rotorua is home to New Zealand’s best mountain bike trails. With over 150km of diverse and beautifully hand crafted trails, riding in Rotorua should be on everybody’s ‘to do’ list. One of the best things about the legendary Whakarewarewa Forest is that there is something for everybody, regardless of skill set, fitness level or previous experience on a bike. The range of Grade 1-2 trails have been designed and built for beginners, while the ever-growing range of Grade 3-5 trails scattered throughout the forest are perfect for the intermediate through to extreme riders. For the more adventurous type, a Heli Bike is the way to go, getting dropped off in unique, secluded and stunning locations where adventure is sure to follow. Here are some great options to consider on your next visit:
1
THE KIDDLY WINKS RIDE Whether you have young ones on runner bikes or a keen rider weaning off trainer wheels, there are plenty of rides for the little ones. The kid’s pump track at the Waipa Carpark is perfect for littlies, while the newly built Mokopuna Trail in the Whakarewarewa Forest is smooth, flat and under the magnificent canopy of Redwoods. A stunning spot for the whole family including the pram and dog is the Puarenga Trail which is smooth and follows a beautiful stream. These tracks are sure to put a smile on your tiny tot’s dial.
2
BEGINNER RIDE Start the morning right with a coffee & muffin at the Waipa carpark, then get the bikes ready and the helmets buckled before heading into the forest to start your adventure! Ride in on the Kid’s Loop to get warmed up, then follow the stick man’s directions along ‘Tahi’ before finishing with ‘Dipper’ (everybody’s favourite Grade two trail). This hour long loop consists of Grades 1-2 and is a great way to get a taste for the majesty of mountain biking in Rotorua.
11
HOT TIP Planet Bike are a one stop shop for Rotorua Riding. Offering half to full day rentals, friendly guides and track information, this is the perfect spot to start the day.
TOP LEFT: Family fun cycling through The Whakarewarewa Forest. ABOVE: Big air at Crankworx Rotorua. LEFT: Rotorua’s trails provide a fun day out with mates, regardless of your riding abilities.
3
THE IN-BETWEENER Enjoy a coffee at Sequoia Eatery, the home of delicious coffee and hearty breakies. Sufficiently fuelled, park and unload the bike at the end of Long Mile Rd. The ride starts with a short, steep climb up Nursery Hill before you turn into ‘Paddy’s Run’, followed by ‘Tickler’. From there you will have a blast riding ‘Be Rude Not To’, ‘Lion Trail’, ‘Turkish Delight’ and finishing with ‘New Exit’, conveniently popping out right by your car. This is a fun, satisfying two hour loop of Grade 3 trails through spectacular scenery.
4
ADVANCED RIDE Head to 8mile gate and nab a seat on the shuttle bus to get up the hill the easy way. From there it’s straight off the bus into native, rooty, fast, flowy mountain biking perfection. Ride ‘Tuhoto Ariki’ to ‘Hatupatu’ and climb up to enjoy ‘Kung Fu Walrus’ which drops you out next to the stunning Green Lake. Head back to the bus so you can do it all again! Trails range from Grade 4-5, with the loop taking around 2 hours. Skyline Rotorua, the home of Crankworx is another great option for advanced riders.
5
HELIBIKE ROTORUA Enjoy the exhilaration and adrenalin of a scenic helicopter flight above pristine wilderness before being delivered into the heart of the Whirinaki Forest. Here you will experience something that many would give their right pedal to ride, the famous Moerangi Trail. While it is possible to complete it in a day, why not pack a sleeping bag and stay the night at one of the three huts you will pass en route? The Whirinaki is a true hidden gem that needs to be experienced to be believed.
12
SOME EPIC RIDES OFF THE BIKE Rotorua is famous for its mountain biking and of course the legendary luge, but there are also plenty of other rides to be enjoyed. MORNING If you are coming from the north then why not leave early to factor in a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set. Wander the rambling paths of the Shire among the submerged Hobbit Holes that litter the hillsides. Whether or not they are old enough to enjoy the films, all boys will love the movie set. Watch as their imaginations run wild, but beware of hair sprouting from their feet. This is a sure sign that it’s time for you to continue on to Rotorua.
MIDDAY White water rafting in Rotorua provides a bonding experience like none-other. Grab lunch from Ciabatta Bakery on the way to the Rotorua Rafting base before getting kitted up and learning the ropes for rafting the river. Are you brave enough to conquer the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world?

At Motion there is fun around every corner, with Chipmunks Playland, Dialled Indoor Tramp Park, Strike Zone Tenpin Bowling, Megazone Laser Tag, a Timezone arcade, Escape Masters, an XD Dark Ride and Lumberjax Mini Golf all under the one roof. MORNING Enjoy breakfast at Third Place Café, looking out over Lake Rotorua and the historic geothermal village of Ohinemutu. Then go for a historic walk back through time at the Buried Village, NZ’s most visited archaeological site. Learn about the violent eruption of Mount Tarawera that destroyed the Pink and WhiteTerraces in 1886 and buried one of our first tourist towns, Te Wairoa. It’s a fun way to learn a piece of iconic Kiwi history.
MIDDAY Head back into town for a delicious lunch at Abracadabra, a mix of Mexican & Moroccan cuisine known for its funky interior and private dining rooms. After lunch head to Rainbow Springs for an unforgettable wildlife experience. Walk through free flight aviaries, feed rainbow trout, and come face to face with pre-historic tuatara. To top off your conservation experience, check out the behind the scenes Kiwi Encounter, New Zealand’s most prolific kiwi hatchery.
EVENING What better way to end a fun filled day in Rotorua than with a magical evening at the Redwoods Treewalk? Be blown away by the giant David Trubidge Nightlights, which with the infinite colour spots & feature lighting transforms the evening into something out of a fairy tale. High above the forest floor you will traverse your way between silent giants, navigating the 550m circuit that Tourism New Zealand deems as the best bridge in the country.

ON HOLIDAY – TONI STREET Toni Street leads a busy lifestyle. Between juggling the duties of a mother of two and her two jobs presenting on Seven Sharp and morning radio with The Hits, few people deserved a holiday more than her. Just before her eldest daughter started school, Toni and the family decided to pack their bags for a fun weekend getaway in Rotorua.
WHAT ACTIVITY WOULD YOU SAY IS A MUST DO FOR PEOPLE VISITING ROTORUA? I’d definitely have Skyline Rotorua as my must do. You get the best view of the city, it’s spectacular – and the new buffet was a serious hit with my kids, as was the luging! Rainbow Springs was also a hidden gem. I didn’t realise there was so much to do there. The bird show in particular was really cool. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CAFÉ, RESTAURANT OR EATERY IN ROTORUA? Terrace Kitchen...the cocktails were incredible! We had a fantastic meal and it had an awesome play area for the kids with dress ups and everything. We literally had to tear them away. DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES VISITING ROTORUA? Rotorua was my favourite NZ destination as a kid! I think because of all of the adventure activities you can do – it’s really exciting for a young person. I distinctly remember being obsessed with luging, and having the hot pools as a backup when it’s cold and raining is such a bonus. WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THAT OTHERS VISIT ROTORUA? It has a great mix of family activities, adventure and relaxation; and I can honestly say the service was among the best I’ve had in NZ. My husband and I are planning to go back for a Mountain Biking adventure next year.

Situated just 25 minutes north of Taupo and 45 minutes south of Rotorua nestled on the shores of Lake Ohakuri lies “The Hidden Valley“ of Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park. Orakei Korako translated means “The Place of Adorning”. THE BURIED VILLAGE Our family legacy to passionately restore, preserve, and showcase Te Wairoa - The Buried Village and sharing stories of human resilience, tragedy and survival that followed the eruption of Mt Tarawera on the 10th June 1886. Te Wairoa was established by the Christian missionary in 1848 as a model European and Maori village settlement but survived for fewer than 40 years before it, and the nearby Pink and White Terraces were destroyed and buried by the eruption of Mt Tarawera. More than 130 years on, a third generation of the Smith family continue the guardianship of the Buried Village and have developed an award winning museum exhibition, over 1 km of heritage excavations and displays and a beautiful walking trail to the Te Wairoa (Wairere) waterfalls. The village is just a short 20 minutes’ picturesque drive from the city center out toward the Tarawera Lakes district and is rated as New Zealand’s most visited archaeological historic site. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AT SKYLINE ROTORUA Devour some of New Zealand’s top cuisine before stepping out to get a magical, up-close view of the night sky by combining dinner at Skyline’s Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar with stargazing at Skyline’s Stargazing observatory. SPRING NIGHTS AT STRATOSFARE
SPOT THE PLANETS
Climb aboard the Gondola to Stratosfare and let the stunning views of Rotorua at dusk set the scene for the evening ahead.
Neptune will be shining from midSeptember through to mid-December, shining brightest in late September and October, with the bluish-hued world of Neptune visible with stargazing binoculars, or a telescope.
With the highest quality meat, produce and seafood, served à la buffet and cooked-to-order style, Stratosfare prides itself on dedication to food and service excellence – something its awards cabinet can attest to. STEP INTO A DIFFERENT UNIVERSE Observing the stars while dining is one thing, however viewing them up close and personal at Skyline’s Stargazing observatory is another. Dark, clear skies await, while top-of-the-line telescopes unveil the celestial features, planets and otherworldly landscapes beyond. With the assistance of a Stargazing guide, you’ll learn how to use the telescopes correctly, before being guided through the night sky. Take the time to discover, ask questions and soak in the wonder.

Shining from mid-October until the end of the year, Uranus will also be visible through the telescopes and you may even be able to spot the planet’s tiny, greenish disk. This planet will be brightest until December 7. BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL The 60-minute Stargazing tour departs nightly after dark, throughout the year. Session times depend on sunset times so visit www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua to book. ROTORUA’S OWN AWARD-WINNING BREW BREW is owned and operated by Croucher Brewing, Rotorua’s Award Winning Brewery. The natural thermal wonders of Rotorua have made it renowned as the aromatic capital of New Zealand (if not the world), hence our desire to create beautiful rich flavoured aromatic beers. In April 2011 Paul Croucher and Nigel Gregory from Croucher Brewing decided it was time for Rotorua to have its very own craft beer pub. After six weeks of graft we opened BREW, home to the full range of Croucher Brewing beers on tap, along with an ever changing selection of other great NZ craft beers, wines & ciders. Grab a ‘tasting rack’ of any four tap beers
if you are having trouble deciding where to start. Need something to eat with your beer? BREW’s Gastropub style menu is both delicious and affordable. Winner of Outstanding Bar at the 2017 Rotorua Hospitality Awards. Regular events include: Tuesday Open Mic Night, BREW Beer Club (first Wednesday of the month), hoppy hour each Friday from 5pm to 7pm, and live music with the Sunday Session. VALUING ROTORUA’S LAKESIDE LIFESTYLE Buying your own slice of “Famously Rotorua”? Then call Adrienne Mikkelsen. She’s an expert at valuing all of the city’s residential, lifestyle and lakes properties, permanent living or holiday homes. Anyone buying into today’s increasingly vibrant Rotorua scene needs a local expert offering local advice. Adrienne should top that list. She’s Property InDepth’s Bay of Plenty manager and a fully registered property valuer. She isn’t a real estate agent. She doesn’t sell properties. Instead, she provides buyers and sellers independent property valuations on the full range of residential, investment, lifestyle and lake properties spread throughout the Rotorua District, the Bay of Plenty and Taupo.
surprising. She’s a real people-person and thoroughly enjoys helping anyone achieve their property goals. Since she began her valuation career in Rotorua in 1997, Adrienne has had her finger on the pulse of Rotorua’s property scene. She joined Property InDepth in 2009 and is one of the many valuers it has working throughout New Zealand.
Many of Property InDepth’s happy clients comment on how “professional, obliging and good to deal with” Adrienne is and how she’s given them “first-class service”. That’s not
