Outdoor adventures Crafted with love Boutique shopping Wellness Beauty and wellbeing Fashion Home and gifts Sports and outdoors Services Useful information
Shopping in Taupō town is done the relaxed way — just park your car in the lakefront town centre and wander the streets, laneways and arcades. You’ll find fashion boutiques with racks lined with local and international designer labels, vintage stores, homeware and gift shops, ceramics, and art and craft galleries full of beautiful items small enough to pack in a suitcase. With many artists and artisans living in the region, beautiful art objects for the home are a specialty, like the luminous hand-blown art
glass inspired by New Zealand landscapes at Lava Glass, and hand-made ceramics by artist Judi Brennan at L’Arte Café, Gallery and Garden. As you might expect in an adventure sport capital, there are outdoor and sporting goods stores to supply every sporting need, as well as maps, licenses and guides. On Saturday mornings, the Taupō Market at Riverside Park has stalls selling jewellery, candles, artisan crafts and homewares, hand-made children’s clothing and fresh produce, along with delicious street food and coffee.

Outdoor adventures Everything in Taupō begins with the incredible natural landscapes. From the sparkling waters of Lake Taupō and the breathtaking panorama of Tongariro National Park, to ancient forests, pristine rivers, and startling geothermal terrain, Taupō is one of the most beautiful places in the world to explore. The region’s outdoor and sporting goods stores are well set up to equip you with all your sporting needs and safety equipment, whether you want to rent, or buy. From fishing tackle to footwear,
camping goods, ski and snowboard gear, watersports and specialist outdoor clothing, as well as maps, licenses and guides, nothing is difficult to find. You’ll not only receive excellent product knowledge and a wide range, but also insider secrets from locals who know and love Taupō’s outdoors. With cycling being extremely popular, Taupō is home to the largest number of specialist bike stores (including e-bikes) in the country, making hiring a bike, buying new, or finding specialist parts easy.

Crafted with love Taupō has a vibrant art and craft culture bred by its relaxed pace of life. From contemporary painting, sculpture, ceramics and glassblowing to traditional Māori carving and weaving, the area draws creatives and artisans to the region who produce a wealth of gorgeous work. In the main towns, there are galleries, gift shops, artist studios, and boutique design stores offering a creative edit of furniture, homewares and handcrafted objects, and Taupō Museum offers both inventively curated exhibitions
and a shop — He Taonga Iti — that sells prints and the ‘small treasures’ that its name means. A little further afield, the studio galleries of award-winning glass artist Lynden Over of Lava Glass and ceramicist Judi Brennan of L’Arte are relaxed places to spend an afternoon browsing the unique and beautiful objects d’art and having a coffee in the garden cafés. Many of Taupō’s stores ship worldwide so you can continue your travels knowing that your little piece of New Zealand will arrive safely on your doorstep.

Boutique shopping You don’t have to wander far in Taupō town to discover independent stores combining fashion and art with contemporary New Zealand-made jewellery and accessories. Is This Love carries New Zealand’s best-known fashion labels, while Charlie Who is a lifestyle hub stocking high-end local fashion, leatherwear, jewellery and imported brands. Many stores offer cosy New Zealand wool, merino and possum products, which make great gifts and souvenirs to take home. Plentiful streetside parking makes wandering the laneways
and streets easy, and you’ll also find excellent eateries and green spaces to rest or picnic. Vibrant, large-scale murals created during the annual Graffiato: Taupō Street Art Festival will surprise you around many corners as you meander the streets. Taupō’s retailers are committed to caring for our environment as kaitiaki (guardians) by becoming single-use plastic bag-free. Wellness Taupō’s natural thermal springs have been a place of rejuvenation and purification for centuries. The gently steaming wai ora (healing waters) that bubble up naturally throughout the region are known to relieve sore muscles, and the mineral-rich geothermal mud is prized by day spas as a body wrap to detoxify and deeply cleanse skin. An afternoon spent relaxing in the warm waters of a thermal pool at a spa resort or family-friendly hot pool complex (while the kids play) is a great way to end an active
holiday or soak the tiredness from muscles after a long hike or bike ride. At the region’s luxury lodges, indulgent spas offer world-class massage, body and facial treatments, and often run wellness retreats. A full range of health, beauty and wellness treatments — from skincare to massage, including local approaches using volcanic hot stones, traditional Māori techniques and mānuka honey as a masque — can be found at the regions day spas, and there are several yoga centres around the region. 9

Freedom camping There are four council-managed areas throughout the region where you can camp in a nonself-contained vehicle, and many more options for those with certified self-contained vehicles. The maximum stay at a single site is three nights and four days, before it’s time to move on and make space for another traveller. Look out for signs around the region that help you determine whether you can park your vehicle up for the night. If in doubt check the Taupō District Council website taupodc.govt.nz or chat to i-SITE staff. Keeping our waters clean Taupō’s waterways are some of the cleanest in the world. Please make sure you know how to protect the quality of Taupō’s lakes and rivers from invasive weeds, algae and pest fish. Follow these simple instructions whenever you move between waterways. Check your equipment and remove any visible matter such as weed or algae. If your gear has not been dry for at least 48 hours then clean with a 5% detergent solution and soak for at least one minute. Ensure your gear is completely dry to touch, inside and out, then leave to dry for another 48 hours before you use it. biosecurity.govt.nz Love Taupō E info@lovetaupo.com W lovetaupo.com Facebook: LoveTaupoNZ Twitter: LoveTaupoNZ Instagram: LoveTaupoNZ Design by Osborne Shiwan Produced by ninetyblack
