One for all ... A

New Year, a new decade, and a first birthday – boy, do we have something to celebrate this issue! It seems only yesterday stepped out our doors and into the hands of Taupō and Bay of Plenty locals. And, one year on, we’re still proudly sharing the love, spreading community spirit, extending our circulation – we’ve woven our way into Rotorua – igniting interest and pushing play on regional offerings. Like the readers we reach out to, our team brings a medley of personalities, talents, and skillsets to the mix – not to mention a flurry of kids and pets tailing behind us! We like to think our point-of-difference is that we ‘are’ different: featuring local heroes that aren’t necessarily social stars – but most deserving of a story shared; encouraging readers to spur into action and visit local hot-spots they may have never heard of – or thought they knew all about – but just needed a little extra inspiration; and touching on topics that are destined to engage both young and old – from Easter egg challenges (turn to page 58), to alien experts (read more on page 44), to regional programmes prompting real change and celebrating successes (turn to pages 53 and 54 to read more), and features that focus on the here and now (flick to page 50 to get your market fix). Birthdays are a time to celebrate and share, so this issue we’re excited to showcase an extra special front cover – taken by you and chosen by you! Thank you to all our Autumn cover entrants – the calibre of pics was outstanding and made the job of choosing the top five for our social media vote exceptionally difficult. Talented photographer, Kevin McDonald, from Rotorua sung to your heart strings with this unique picture of the living Māori Village Ōhinemutu in Rotorua.

Onwards We Thunder! Kia ora tātou,

W

e’re past the business end of summer and the warmer days are fading fast! So too is the memory of another wonderful IRONMAN event, with both the full distance and 70.3 options well attended in March.

We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. With the longer days arriving, our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is the perfect place to spend a Spring evening.

Open 7 days from 11 am

We now look forward to the world’s best heading our way in November for the IRONMAN world championships here in Taupō. The entire district will benefit from the huge influx of people, the massive economic boost and the opportunity to rub shoulders with athletes and supporters from cultures all around the world. There is a lot going on before then too. We’re busy making our Great Lake Walkway even better – by widening the path and controlling erosion works to create a more user-friendly experience for visitors and locals. Our walkways project will accommodate the ever-increasing usage of our lakefront and enhance the cultural importance of this outstanding natural area. The events don’t stop either so head to lovetaupo.com to explore what’s on offer across our district. There is nothing like getting out and about. Stay a while, sample our local cuisine, visit our shops and enjoy the delightful colours that autumn brings. See you out there!

Focus on Economic and Social Initiatives Kia ora koutou,

A

lmost five months into the triennium, my focus as Mayor of Tauranga has changed from getting on top of the job and addressing some key issues, to putting the building blocks in place for longer-term actions to deliver the liveable city we all want. Those initiatives cover a balanced mix of economic and social initiatives targeting some of the main obstacles Tauranga faces. On the economic front, we have been working to reset the Council’s relationship with central Government – finding ways to fund major infrastructure projects without impacting on existing debt. Simultaneously, we are reviewing our planning rules to enable mixed uses such as commercial, residential and office high-rise developments in the CBD, to make better use of our existing infrastructure and revitalise this crucial part of the city. Social issues are also incredibly important and over the coming months we will be working with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council via a joint Mayoral Taskforce to address the poverty and homelessness. I’m determined to bring together all of the key agencies to focus on getting our community wellbeing indicators heading in the right direction. In conclusion, can I say how much I appreciate the feedback and ideas I’m receiving from Tauranga people. Please keep that going – it helps me stay in touch with the things that count for the wider community. Nga mihi nui,

The Bucket List

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

Take on Te Waihou

Y

ou’d be forgiven for driving straight past the Te Waihou Walkway – we had for many years – fobbing the entranceway to New Zealand’s world-famous Blue Springs as, “that place where people pull over to go to the bathroom just before Putaruru.” Turns out, no one’s just stopping for a drink or a pitstop – the reasons are much clearer now. The Te Waihou Walkway, off State Highway 28, marks the beginning of a 4.7km trail to the Blue Springs – the crystalclear waters that account for near 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water supply. This ancient waterway originates from the Mamaku Plateau which takes 100 years to feed through to the spring. The result? The purest of purest waters that contain no

constituents and particles, with colour so clear you can literally see through it. Why the blue? Because pure water lacks light absorbency – no red light in this mix – just blue and some green. So, with clearer vision and the promise of easy walking flatland – a mix of farm and native bush – our family and extended family – armed ourselves with a picnic and set forth one sunny Saturday.

What we learnt along the way Well, it was hot and the river water looked so inviting, however you’re advised not to swim as local Iwi and council have had to expend much time and energy clearing up where other people have left off – including much river bank restoration from

2015 onwards. Thus, because of people taking greater heed and care, the river is literally alive with thriving vegetation, fish and bird life. Strollers and buggies would be fine – some portions of the trail do have steps but these are manageable and infrequent. And, the bonus of ‘no bike’ policy, means you are not having to side-step too often. Our advice is to go early to beat the heat – be there by 9am – and aim to arrive at the Springs by 10. A round trip took us three hours – we calculated just over 8kms – which includes the hour-long picnic.

Blue Springs Quickfire:

• There are two entrances to the springs: Whites Road off State Highway 28 heading towards Putaruru, or Leslie Road if coming from Putaruru heading north. • The springs supply half the township of Putaruru and near 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water. • No bikes and no dogs are permitted. • Fishing is allowed on the Te Waihou river but only with a license. • 700 litres of water per second pours from the springs. • The springs are at a constant of 11 degrees temperature year-round.

Is it like the pictures? Better! Absolutely stunning and because swimming is a no-go, you can really appreciate the tranquillity and beauty of the springs and all that surround her – the carpetlike greenery that wafts below the surface and the fernery that dips its toes through the blue. 15

Touring the Iconic

T

here’s no need to dread winter to come, because when other regions start turning down the heat, there’s one that keeps powering through the autumn months – Whakatāne. “We always say summer ends after Queen’s birthday weekend,” enthuses Anna Williams, marketing advisor for Whakatāne District Tourism and Events. “Our extra season of summer means Easter holiday time is still prime to go surfing, biking, walking and exploring – we cater to all.” Alongside its outdoor offerings, Whakatāne has long proved itself a town to spend time in – and it has the thumbs up from a resident Kiwi icon. “Our area is now home to over 300 wild Kiwi, making us the official

s

Whakatāne

Kiwi capital of the world™. Many of them live within a stone’s throw of suburban streets, and you’ll find them spread amidst the bush clad hills from Whakatāne to Ōhope Beach,” explains Anna. “It really is very special because 20 years ago numbers were down to eight, and thanks to the volunteer-lead Whakatāne Kiwi Trust predator control operations, they’ve flourished.” And, these native chicks are definitely something for everyone to celebrate and share in, says Anna. “From April to June, Kiwi Night Walks are held every Friday evening. It’s a great opportunity to hear the Kiwi calling and rustling through native

bush, and discover other fascinating creatures that come alive when the sun goes down.” For those holidaying with Easter eggfuelled kids in tow, taking a one-hour self-guided walk of the Fairbrother Loop, or following the Kiwi wandering trail, is destined to burn off some energy. “You can pick up a scavenger hunt brochure from the i-Site and find the ten life-like, life-size bronze kiwi statues which wander right through the heart of Whakatāne,” says Anna. “Great fun for the whole family – and a way to explore the town.”

Good vibrations Because there’s plenty to get excited about, says Kathy Potter, owner of the region’s renowned Mexican cantina, Cadera and proud local. “For us that have lived and breathed Whakatāne our whole lives we know why we

Anna agrees. “Restaurants like Fisherman’s Wharf in Ōhope and Cadera, and L’Epicerie Larder have such a strong following of locals and visitors because they imbue that relaxed, everyman’s atmosphere and draw on the best of local flavours and utilise local produce. We don’t go without!” And, kicking back and relaxing is also an adventure in itself when visiting the region, thanks to renowned Awakeri Rail Adventures. Travelling at a leisurely 20 kilometres per hour, you traverse a piece of New Zealand’s rich rail history and experience nature’s beauty – farmland and bushland scenes – all from the comfort of a rail-cart which has been cleverly adapted to be selfdriven along the rail tracks.

t’s not often you step from bustling city curbside to find yourself immersed in another world beyond the gate, but The Elms heritage site – nestled in the heart of Tauranga’s CBD – is one such majestic fixture. The historic grounds set on a hectare of land deliver a storytelling journey full of intrigue, partnerships, family tales and cultural unions, and all at the cusp of Tauranga harbour.

I’m still standing “Many people are quite taken aback when they visit us,” muses Andrew Gregg, manager of The Elms. “Which is why it pays to leave your expectations at the door because it’s authentic and nostalgic in more ways than one.” And whilst the city has changed around it, The Elms holds position as the pillar of the community – marking the birthplace of Tauranga, and the coming together of Māori and Pākehā into the Bay of Plenty as the Te Papa Mission Station in 1838. “Missionary Alfred Brown formally established the mission station and his family first lived onsite in a

traditional raupō whare. They lived in it for nine years before the main house was completed,” explains Andrew. “What’s interesting is that they actually recycled the raupō (bull rush) using it as insulation in the walls of the main house. They were very industrious and forward thinking!”

One for all Over the years, the heritage site was passed down through two families – the Browns and Maxwells – and is now currently managed by The Elms Foundation who keep close ties with the Ōtamataha Trust. Both are vested in maintaining the integrity of the site, keeping storytelling alive and planning for the future. “The Elms is multi-faceted – it’s not a static place to visit once and leave at that. It’s a place that is continually alive with stories of past and present – it’s constantly evolving,” says Andrew. “As guardians of the site, it’s key that we maintain the level of care that’s been upheld by previous generations. Like Alice Maxwell and Duff Maxwell who dedicated their lives to caring for the property, so even through its years as a private residence of the Maxwell family   Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

The Elms was still open to visitors.” And whilst ‘anytime drop in’ has been taken off the list at The Elms today, the charitable foundation is continually working to welcome more people through its doors. Even those who are keen on science. “We recently had a House of Science group come through who conducted bug exploration in our native tree area. It affirmed just how much The Elms has to offer: biology, history, geography and art.”

Alive and kicking And, with its heritage garden project now complete, The Elms is adding yet another string to its bow. “Our heritage garden aptly showcases the bond between past and present, traditional form and structure, and modern materials woven to resemble old,” explains Andrew. “Alongside we’re growing the traditional plants and vegetables they would have nurtured – kūmara, taro, raupō. Preserving and showcasing this innate slice of history in our community is a special thing to be a part of.”

The Good Carbs Amongst Us Someone to Delight in

I

t’s early morning in Taupō, and while the town is still waking up, Shivi Kumaria and his team have already been hard at work: making breads, sending supplies to local cafés and restaurants for the day, stocking up the food cabinet, and getting ready to serve the many locals about to stream through the doors of Bakers Delight Taupō. Shivi’s friendly face may be familiar – and his delicious breads equally as memorable – but delights don’t end there. Because he’s also serving up smiles to the wider community, donating his surplus bread to a different charity every day.

“I never keep my baking to a minimum. We want to be able to serve people all day, right up to 5.30 when we close,” says Shivi. “So, because of that we have a surplus of approximately $1,000 in retail value every day.”

E

Turn it around Currently, Shivi provides the daily surplus to people in need through seven different charities, including The Salvation Army, local churches and Māori trusts, who then deliver these breads to people in need – spanning the Taupō district and its sister suburbs.

When Shivi bought the business almost four years ago, slow afternoons would be common, leading to a large amount of wastage every day, however he turned both problems into equal opportunities. Increasing his production meant he could serve bread dawn till dusk, and aim for a surplus to donate at close of day.

a

s T e R

  Deepika Sulekh

Where there’s a will Believing that a business can be socially conscious and successful, Shivi commits to minimising his wastage, as well as giving back to those who need it most, and he feels pretty lucky to be able to achieve both with the power of his bread. “I am so glad to have the support from the community. And my wishes have been answered – I asked for more charities and I now have many others wanting to be a part of this work. Knowing that I can now provide to more than one charity a day means so much.”

Beyond Skin Deep

Tā Moko Patterns for its People P

ioneered well before the dawn of modern-day movements, the tradition of Tā Moko, Māori tattooing, which means ‘to mark’ – typically on the face – is renowned for its spiritual and functional significance amongst New Zealand’s indigenous peoples. Fast forward three centuries, and today this age-old practise continues to surge with cultural reverence – shunning mainstream status and popular culture – inking out what truly matters.

Rightful place “The Tā Moko art form has implanted itself back into our culture – with a particularly strong resurgence across the last three decades. It’s grounded itself amongst our people, which means further generations now have the opportunity to apprentice and train in Māori arts,” explains Julie Paama-Pengelly of Bay of Plenty’s Art + Body tattoo studio. As a female Tā Moko specialist – dedicating her life to the art form – Julie’s modern-day concerns for Tā Moko are not centred on lack of awareness, rather lack of understanding and appreciation of its sacredness. “Aside from the face – which is preserved for Māori alone – Moko artists are usually very prepared to share their marks on those non-Māori who want to understand the Māori world and seek authentic

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

tattooing,” she says. “The biggest challenge is maintaining the integrity of Tā Moko – we are up against many non-Māori claiming the rights to wear Tā Moko and non-Māori artists claiming the rights to apply Tā Moko. “What isn’t negotiable is that Māori artists have to apply Tā Moko, as its design knowledge and learnings are centred on the traditions and relationships of the Māori world. And, for those non-Māori considering a tattoo with traditional Māori symbolism, they need to commit to building stronger relationships with external worlds before undergoing markings.”

Lose the normal Normalisation of Tā Moko has allowed Māori to step into the light, says Julie, however ‘normal’ shouldn’t be viewed as a key driver to wear a tattoo. “As artists and communities alike, we need to appreciate the real truths behind tattoo culture. We must understand that markings on your skin actually have the ability to heal inter-generational trauma,” says Julie. “A Māori tattoo without the hands of the Kaitā in its creation harnesses bad energy – it has no place alongside our ancestors – it’s a meaningless scribble. The symbols must interpret a personal story.”

Come together Ensuring the sacred preservation of Tā Moko is a role that should be upheld by both artists and wearer.

“Tā Moko belongs to the Māori artist community and their whakapapa. When non-Māori apply this, they are ignoring that Māori fought for their culture – they are robbing from us and undermining our own development as a people,” she explains. For those of Māori lineage considering a Tā Moko tattoo, reaching out to their ancestors, exploring their whakapapa, their tribal carvings, starting conversations within their communities are the first – and most essential – steps. “Armed with this knowledge, they can then approach a Tā Moko artist whose role it is to interpret, listen and personalise the markings. Artists hold the design knowledge and are the connectors to the Māori visual language,” says Julie. “Tā Moko is not about ego, money, easy removal – it goes beyond surface level.” 25

Ageing Gracefully … Ageing Beautifully!

N

ow is a great time of year to address the harsh effects of the environment and ageing on our facial appearance. Many people are reluctant to accept not so much the inevitability, but the speed with which their face changes with age. Shrinking facial fat pads, thinning facial skin and a reduction in muscle and bone are responsible for changes to our unique facial identity, causing our appearance to look typically ‘aged’. Exposure to the harsh sun in this region of the world causes our skin to age prematurely. People aim to prolong their physical and mental wellbeing and shine in their best ‘light’ for as long as is reasonably possible. There are some safe and increasingly popular treatments which soften some of the effects of facial ageing and restore a youthful appearance.

What Property Buyers are Paying Top Dollar for in Taupō

E

ven though it’s officially autumn – the property market is still hot here in Taupō. Stock is low and there are always buyers waiting for the right house to come up for sale. So, if your home can tick all (or even some) of the boxes below, it is well worth considering what price your property could fetch.

Lake and mountain views It goes without saying that lake and mountain views are extremely sought after here – after all, it’s what makes our region so attractive to buyers.

they can move straight into – without having to upgrade further.

Location You know what they say – it’s all about location, location, location. So, the right home in the right area is very likely to sell for top dollar.

Smart design is a response to many factors. We must negotiate a range of materials, forms and influences to marry space and functionality, while staying true to both land and people.

Let’s coalesce.

Ample garaging From the boat, to the bikes and the jet ski, buyers are looking for garaging/ storage that can hold all the weekend toys.

What is Digital Marketing? And Why You Need It

  Deepika Sulekh

ore than 80 per cent of consumers do research online before making a purchase decision – which is pretty much everyone, right? They read reviews, compare prices, download information and check out company websites – all before even getting in touch with a business. So are you putting your best foot forward online? If you’re not, digital is where you need to be, because it’s now the most important advertising medium.

What exactly is ‘Digital Marketing’? It basically covers all types of marketing that businesses do online – from websites, to SEO (search engine optimisation), Google Ads, social media, video, blogs, newsletters and more. For those who are still adjusting to what being online means, it can be rather overwhelming. But as they say, the best way to get something done is to begin.

Buyer journeys To better understand how to capture more customers, it’s a good idea to find out how your current ones made it to you, and why they decided to buy from you, and not your competitors. This is called a buyer journey – with your business as the end destination!

T e R B 38

u

The three main stages are: • Awareness: The buyer realises they have a problem. • Consideration: The buyer knows what they need and research solutions. • Decision: The buyer decides what they want and commits to a specific solution.

Digital marketing channels Social Media

• Facebook – this is the biggest social media channel with 2.5 billion monthly active users in 2019. It’s the social ‘hub’ on the internet where users can share any content with friends and followers. • Instagram – photo-sharing at its best, Instagram is one of the fastest-growing channels thanks to smartphones and their everimproving cameras. • LinkedIn – this is social media for business, think professional networking opportunities online and a space to come across other like-minded professionals. • Twitter – great platform for newsworthy content and works well if you can get a lot of followers. • YouTube – the most popular videosharing platform and video search engine, YouTube is useful if you have valuable videos that can drive engagement, such as interviews, product demos, how-tos, etc. • Pinterest – if you’ve got quality visual content and your business is image-heavy (photography, retail, etc) Pinterest can work for you.

Other kinds of marketing and advertising (print, radio, signage etc.) are definitely not obsolete – in fact they are a great accompaniment to digital marketing. Potential customers often need at least three ‘exposures’ PROMOTERS to a brand and/or product before being engaged with it, so providing a variety of touch points is crucial.

Events Social Inbox Smart Content

The importance of the ‘Customer Experience’ The customer transaction is no longer just a sale, it’s an experience building a relationship, and the potential for repeat business – if you play your cards right. Remember the journey we were talking about? This is about considering what people ‘feel’ when they interact with your business. By using digital marketing in the right way, you have the ability to influence decisions – which is often based on an emotional response to your online presence. Simply put; if someone likes what they see and read they are more likely to buy from you.

But here’s the key to this aspect being successful – it must always be consistent. Whatever appears in a magazine, newspaper, on a display ad, or any other marketing activity, it must provide the target audience with the same message, look and feel.

How can you improve your online presence? The digital space can feel like a black hole when you don’t know the ins and outs of it. It takes time and effort to set it up right, maintain it, and keep it going. We never said it would be easy, but if you’ve made it to this point, you’re on the right track. So don’t hesitate to get help where you need it.

Measurement There’s no point in all this work if you don’t know what’s working, how it’s working, and what you can improve. And luckily, digital marketing is one of the easiest to measure, with accuracy

Apple & Crumble

Feijoa W

  Deepika Sulekh

hen the days begin to darken, ugg boots roll out and slow cookers unmask, now is the hour to let your thoughts crumble. So, go grab a bucket, pull on your gummies and make the most of autumn’s feijoa bounty tucked under the hedgerows. Like warm crumble and cool, crisp evenings, apple and feijoa make an unforgettable combination. This recipe fuses the best flavours with a crumbly topping – a seasonal favourite not-to-be-missed!    Serves: 6    Cooking time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

Crumble

• 4 apples • 1 cup water • 1/2 cup lemon juice • 3 tablespoons sugar • 2 cups feijoa pulp

• ½ cup plain flour • ½ cup rolled oats • ½ cup ground almonds • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 150 grams cold butter

Method Step 1: Cut apple quarters into thick slices and put into a medium-sized saucepan. Add water, lemon juice, sugar and salt, cover and bring to the boil. Turn down to a simmer and cook for an additional two minutes. Add feijoa pulp to the saucepan, stir then cover and cook for a further two minutes until lightly poached. Drain into a colander in the sink and leave while preparing the crumble topping. Step 2: In a deep bowl mix together flour, oats, ground almonds, brown sugar and ginger. Rub in the butter until the mixture is clinging together in clumps. Tip: Try using a grater to grate the cold butter straight into the mixture – do it in stages, i.e. grate some, then rub it in, grate some more and rub it in until the butter is finished. Step 3: Transfer the drained fruit to a greased ovenproof dish or individual cocottes. The fruit should fill three quarters of the dish. Sprinkle crumble over the top of the fruit. Step 4: Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 to 25 minutes until the crumble is cooked and fruit juices start to bubble up through the crumble.

Enjoy with fresh cream, custard or ice cream. Seriously good!

Variation: Mix it up by adding ½ cup crystallised ginger to the first step and sprinkle some on top of the crumble. Think added kick and aromatics without being too overpowering – we vouch for it!

What’s not to love about feijoas? Crumble, chutney, jam, cakes, fruit paste – the list goes on. So, given their seasonal span is only a few months, get in early, pick a glut and preserve them for the months ahead. Because, there’s no better way to jazz up the cheese, crackers and sliced meats in summer than with a tangy, sweet and full-of-flavour feijoa chutney. Lost in Space? It’s Time to Look Closer to Home

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

S

uzanne Hansen is no cliché ‘alien’ enthusiast – you won’t find her sporting any outwardly extraterrestrial wear or waving banners – for good reason, her work speaks beyond fanfare and stereotypes. The Tauranga local has been a globally renowned UFO and alien contact researcher for over 45 years, she has spoken in eight countries and at more UFO conferences you can count. She is the founding director of New Zealand’s UFOCUS NZ research network, and co-ordinator of CommunicatorLink, a support and advocacy group for experiencers of contact worldwide. Her research, consultancy and support work are extensive – galaxies long – and much discussion overlaps between sightings and contact – neither are isolated.

Line of sight With such a wealth of experience and research to draw upon, it’s hard to know where to begin – or end, she muses. “However, let’s just look at sightings here in New Zealand, as they tend to come in seven-year spans – with the first dating right back to the 1890s.” 44

Magnetic pulling power If you’re keen on upping your sighting chances, you don’t have to travel too far, says Suzy.

In fact, UFOCUS NZ’s registry of sightings is one of the richest and best documented among UFO research groups worldwide.

To be or not to be?

After 25 years of independent research and working with veteran New Zealand UFO researchers, like the late Harvey Cooke of Tauranga, Suzy founded UFOCUS NZ in the year 2000 with a staff of eight – including the late Graeme Opie, who at the time was a private pilot and senior air traffic controller at Hamilton International Airport.

“Well, we could sit here for hours (and we literally did) but I guess the biggest things are learning to spot the differences between what could be craft and what is a natural phenomenon – or a Chinese lantern,” says Suzy. “You wouldn’t believe how many sightings we get that are simply Chinese lanterns. Also, atmospheric scintillation are commonly sighted, these are atmospheric effects which influence astronomical observations and can cause stars to twinkle and flash brightly.

Over the years she has also been gifted a number of private UFO archives, and UFOCUS NZ’s archive documents house over 10,000 sightings in New Zealand. And if you thought that aliens were everywhere or that anyone working in UFO research didn’t have a ‘real’ job – sometimes it pays to think beyond, says Suzy. “We currently have a scientist, astronomer, engineer and retired air traffic controller amongst our people at UFOCUS NZ. We’ve had a rage of specialists join us over the years, some of whom work quietly in the background, including a GP, an astrophysicist and a psychologist.”

So, what do alien specialists really want to share with Kiwis when it comes to ‘seeing’ an alien?

“Our advice is to pay closer attention to aerial phenomena that exhibit unconventional characteristics, hover for a long period of time or dart erratically, execute right-angled turns, or travel at extreme speed.” And, if you do happen to see strange phenomena in the sky, don’t zoom in on it with your camera. “To analyse an image we need clarity and zoom distorts it, so capture it with a steady hand and aim to get a roof line or hill in the image for perspective.”

“There are certain areas in New Zealand that experience more sightings than others – the Kaipara Harbour area, the Taupō/Rotorua plateau and Bay of Plenty region, and the Dome Valley, to name a few. Along with a number of other countries we carry out research into UFO sightings around the times of volcanic and seismic activity,” she explains. “The late (retired Captain) Bruce Cathie – a world renowned UFO researcher who lived in Auckland – actually formulated a theory on a global grid system – electromagnetic lines – through advanced mathematics. He believed that UFOs use the magnetic fields to travel, and Tauranga sits on a grid line, which may be one reason why we have had significant activity reported here over the years.”

Support for speak Suzy is the first to concur that education in and around the UFO subject still has a long way to go – but the social taboo has lifted. “I don’t believe social media does the subject a lot of good – you get too many people posting hoaxes and trying to ride high on this, that and the other,” she says. “But we are seeing people in high-up places, and high-credibility witnesses and professionals such as pilots and ATCs – take for example my friend and colleague Robert Salas, formally a Captain in the US military – coming forward and sharing their UFO sightings and experiences, and advocating their support for research and discussion. “It’s not about ‘solving’, it’s about creating ‘awareness’.”

Is Your Home Headed for a Haphazard Relationship? Natural Hazards and Your Property

I

n a region renowned for its bounty of naturally occurring hazards – which play by their own rules – it’s worth considering how they could potentially affect your property development goals.

Natural hazards 101 Natural hazards include hot ground, geothermal activity, liquefaction, unstable ground, fault lines, erosion, falling debris, subsidence, slippage, inundation and flooding. Climate change is not a hazard itself, but it is likely to influence the frequency and severity of hazards including flooding and drought in the future.

The role of councils engineers | surveyors | planners

Celebrating 80 years of project excellence and growth. Established in 1940, Cheal are the experts in Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, Land Surveying, Laser Scanning, Drone Surveys and Resource Management Planning. We invest in the latest technology and a team of highly skilled professionals.

Councils are tasked with planning for natural hazards. This can be through their Emergency Management, Long Term, Asset Management, District and Regional Plans. Councils also respond to events that occur. In assessing a resource consent application, your council will take into account the requirements of the Building Act and Resource Management Act, both of which can restrict or delay construction, or provide grounds to decline where there is significant risk of natural hazards. An assessment will be made as to whether your proposal will accelerate, worsen, or result in material damage to the land or other land (including neighbouring or downstream properties) or structures.

providing valuable information on hot ground hazards, geothermal areas, fault lines and flood hazard areas. Natural hazard information should also be available on a Land Information Memorandum (LIM) report which you may wish to obtain prior to purchasing a property. Additional information may also be available on the property file.

Off the record Given the volatile and ever-changing nature of hazards, it is worth noting that many hazards are not recorded on maps. This may mean specific testing is required to confirm that the proposed building site or land to be subdivided does not involve hazards, or that existing hazards are able to be remedied.

A Hydrological Assessment may be required to establish suitable building platforms and finished floor levels before your local authority will approve subdivision or building consent for development.

The New Way to Shop   Deepika Sulekh

A Fresh Take on Retail

N

o matter the weather, one of the team’s favourite weekend activities is heading to the local markets. Whether you’re strolling through endless stalls hunting for morsels to nibble on, trying out some neat homespun crafts, hoarding new vintage finds or packing fresh produce for your pantry, markets can be an oddly therapeutic, providing a way to disconnect from devices, connect with communities and spend quality time with family. Their rising popularity is also seeing a change in how we shop, providing support to local farmers, artists and designers.

Celebrating local foodie culture One of the main reasons these markets keep us coming back is the delicious food – from freshly baked goods, pies, fries, coffee, juices and so much more. And, with each market having its own unique spin, the range of food is pulling us out of our lazy weekend slumber with breakfast and live entertainment dishing up a more vibrant atmosphere. If you’ve been to Market Central Taupō, you’ll know it’s a foodie’s heaven, with Korean, Kiwiana, Argentinean, Vegan Raw, American BBQ and Asian fusion amidst its range of gourmet cuisine. Further north, Brigitte from Rotorua Farmers Markets, echoes similar market sentiments. “John and Rose Norton from the Mobile Chef are one of the favourites at the Rotorua Farmers Market with their incredible pastries,” she enthuses. “Saturday night’s see them prepping the dough before rising at 3am on Sunday mornings to begin cooking the melt-in-your-mouth Danishes to serve at the market. Delicious!” 50

Regional influence If there’s anywhere to find authentic local flavour, our regional markets are the place to be. Whether it’s Rotorua’s Māori tastes, Taupō’s lakeside, or Tauranga’s inner-city experiences, we’re tuning into these shopping spaces for more than one reason.

And, more often than not our choice to ‘go to market’ is fuelled by location and atmosphere. “One of the best parts about Market Central Taupō is our stunning location, with views of the lake and mountains – this and the overall vibe created by stallholders and our community make it the ultimate spot to enjoy delicious street food and local live music here in Taupō,” says Karen Cederwall of Taupō’s Market Central. “There will be an upgrade to Northcroft Reserve in May that will make it an even more enjoyable experience for all visitors.”

And, on the foodie front, our palates are definitely more sophisticated than they were 10 to 15 years ago. Because dining out is now more commonplace in daily lives, we’re seeking variety and diversity in our choice of cuisine. New dishes, flavours, ingredients are piquing our interest and testing our abilities to recreate these experiences at home. This is perhaps why shopping at markets for homegrown and speciality food shops for those unique and gourmet items is fast becoming the popular choice over mainstream supermarkets. People want to try, test and buy the different, the specialist and the notyour-usual – the demand is there, explains Liz of Tauranga’s gourmet grocer, Vetro.

PROJECT O

pportunity doesn’t always come to those that wait, which is why the team behind Project K – New Zealand’s youth focussed programme – decided to take matters into their own hands 25 years ago and unite with Year 10 Kiwis who were seeking a change in direction, greater connections, added confidence and inspiration. Today, the charity-funded organisation – facilitated by the Graeme Dingle Foundation – is run in 12 colleges nationwide: Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Canterbury.

Beyond the here and now Bay of Plenty programme director for both Mount Manganui and Otumoetai Colleges, Dan Allen-Gordon, says Project K isn’t ‘risk’ focussed, rather it’s intent on reaching out to students at a transitional time in their lives, one often fraught with an overwhelming sense of change and expectation. “Of the students that complete the 14-month programme, many of them are facing hurdles in their lives that are beyond their control. At Year 10 level they’ve had a year to settle into college, they know what’s expected of them heading into NCEA, teachers know them – it can be tough bridging the gaps and confidently gearing themselves towards achieving future goals,” he explains. “Which is why the practical aspects of the

programme – participating in stage one which is a three week Wilderness Adventure and getting hands-on involvement in the second stage, a week-long Community Challenge – alongside partnering with a mentor for over a year, really equips them with the life skills – focus, empathy, resilience, perseverance – to head back into the school environment and beyond, and stay true to themselves.”

Fair play from start to finish Staying true and fair is also akin to the way Project K is run, says Dan. “Every intake we have six boys and six girls who haven’t been hand picked by teachers or put forward by family members. We work on a threestage process. Identifying students via self-efficacy questionnaires, then we interview students and their parents, from there students are picked at random – there’s no favouritism involved, it’s an equal playing field.”

United we stand One such student chosen to complete the programme five years ago was Mount Maunganui College student Paris Te Oka, who credits Project K with her achievements and renewed sense of direction.

There’s Proof in the Pudding:

Leading the Way programme I found myself and really tuned into what I really wanted from life,” she says. Today, Paris is working in childcare and prepping for a career in the music industry. “Music and kids are my thing. I am 100% confident knowing that both have a place in my future.” And, like many of Project K’s graduates, Paris holds fast to the relationship she built with her mentor, Helen Fraser, a Mount Maunganui local, mum and business woman. “Helen was incredible the whole journey through and beyond. And, she went out of her way to create additional opportunities for me, like work experience at her Mount Maunganui store, Bettie Monroe, helping me learn the retail ropes and customer service skills,” explains Paris. “I was completely overwhelmed by the human element when doing the programme, it’s really strengthened my sense of identity.” To learn more or get involved with Project K in the Bay of Plenty, reach out to: dan.allen-gordon@dinglefoundation.org.nz

“Without a doubt I wouldn’t be where I am today without my experience and learnings from Project K. I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life and I felt lost. Through the 53

Celebrating 10 Years of Tomorrow’s Trailblazers

Instep with Innovation   Deepika Sulekh

T

oday, innovation is a must in everything and anything we do. And, with work environments and career landscapes rapidly changing, building a culture of innovation in schools is becoming increasingly important to prepare our students for the future. Young Innovator Awards is a local awards programme that challenges high school students in the Western Bay of Plenty to come up with a unique innovation to make the world a better place.

Rubbish talk Last year’s entries saw students tackle textile waste, over-use of plastic bottles, air pollution and teen employment amongst many other original solutions. The entries are judged by top Kiwi innovators, and the prize? The opportunity to participate in internships at leading businesses throughout the Bay of Plenty.

Established in 2010 by Priority One’s Instep programme, YiA supports a culture of innovation in our region’s secondary schools so that our future workforce has the transferable skills they require for further study, work and active citizenship. “Young Innovator Awards has always been about encouraging students to think outside the square and give shape to their curiosity,” explains Andy Howells, Instep Manager. “The challenge is to come up with an innovative product or service that addresses real world problems, helping students to apply the skills needed for research, creativity, sustainability and communication.”

Ten years ago, Ian Macrae of Page Macrae Engineering and Lyn Parlane, former Instep Manager for Priority One, sparked conversation and then planted the Young Innovator Awards seed. They kept one goal at the fore: to encourage students to use project-based learning skills to solve problems, fostering the innovative mindset required by employers then, now and into the future. A decade on and Young Innovator Awards is proud to have had over 3000 students across the 11 Western Bay of Plenty secondary schools complete and submit entries over the 10 years that the programme has been running. And, the programme continues to grow from strength to strength because of its strong collaborative partnerships, with impressive judges and speakers, including Sir Paul Callaghan and Sir Ray Avery, to name a few.

And, the YiA 2019 winners were ... Sarah Latus of Otumoetai College in the Senior Category, with her wristband, Vibrabands, for cyclists to wear which vibrates when cars are passing. Myscha Barry and Leilani Horan of Aquinas College in the Junior Category, with their scratch off sticker and mobile app, DoseAIDage, telling people when to take their antibiotics during a course. Stevie Shaw of Aquinas College in the Intermediate Category, with her seedling planter pots from a byproduct that comes from pulp and paper mills, Waste Not, Rot Pots.

The innovation formula

“Support comes from our local business community who really see YiA as valuable – even necessary – for ensuring WBOP businesses will have access to a steady stream of innovative thinkers educated here in our local schools,” explains Andy. “They have come onboard to be judges, to offer internships to winners, to provide prizes, to promote the competition across the WBOP sub-region, to provide contacts of inspiring guest speakers and so much more.” To learn more about the awards and view previous years’ winners and finalists visit www.yia.co.nz

What you’ll need:

• 2 large mixing bowls • 3 large Easter egg moulds or circular moulds – your choice • 120 grams baking soda • 50 grams Epsom salts • 50 grams corn-starch • 50 grams citric acid • 2 teaspoons water • 1 teaspoon essential oil (we like sweet orange) • 2 drops food colouring (maybe yellow for Easter!) • Confetti sprinkles to jazz them up (we like to use biodegradable glitter from Projekt Glitter Bioglitter) • Optional tiny toys i.e. dinosaurs or reptiles (we like ipidipi toys which you can buy from Amazon – 32 pieces for $10)

Eastertime ... it’s a win-win for all, and this year we’re giving you more than one reason to embrace the sweet season. So, why not burn off some sugar searching through our pages to uncover our ‘hidden eggs’ - find them all, spell out the secret word and you could be into win some chocolatey goodness! And when all that searching’s complete, scrub up with some egg-tastic bath bombs, before relaxing with an Easter-inspired word find. It's a sweet life!

EGG HunTt CompeTi ioN

Find the hidden eggs and be in to win a prize full of Easter treats! Simply search through 's pages to find the hidden eggs and write down the letters below in order of the page numbers to spell out the secret word.

Then, get your mum or dad to enter online at henrymagazine.nz/competitions to go in the draw to win. Winner will be drawn 1 April 2020 and contacted directly. T's & C's apply.

How to: Step 1: Take a bowl and mix in your dry ingredients – baking soda, salts, corn-starch and citric acid. Give them a good whisk together. Step 2: In your second bowl, mix all the wet ingredients – oil, water and colouring.

Step 3: Pour your wet ingredients into your dry ingredients and mix well. If the mixture begins to lump together add a little more water – but not too much! You want a consistency that is firm to touch and not too sloppy. Step 4: Take your egg moulds, split them into two halves – you should have 6 halves – and sprinkle your glitter into both halves. We like to use approximately 1 teaspoon of glitter per egg half.

Step 5: Gently pack your mixture into all 6 halves, making sure there are no trapped air pockets otherwise your eggs will fall apart when you take them out of their moulds. If you’re planning on a surprise toy too, insert one toy into three of your halves now. Step 6: Finally, push your filled halves together – you should have three complete eggs – and leave them to set under a towel for at least 30mins. Step 7: Once set, carefully remove the moulds and go take a dip in the bath with your eggs – or gift them as Easter presents!
