A time for change Welcome to our first issue for 2022. To start the year, we’ve had some exciting developments here at henry. You may notice a few changes thanks to a mini refresh, and we’ve welcomed new contributors to guide the next era of our magazine. I’m thrilled to have joined henry as editor. Along with writers Harri and Erin and the rest of the team, we look forward to curating fresh, inspirational and relevant content that matters to you - our readers. The pandemic has taught us the importance of teamwork, communication and innovation. Not only in our day-to-day lives but also in the way we engage with our networks and communities. In this issue, we explore some of these topics in depth. National Party Leader Chris Luxon sits down to discuss his childhood, motivations for entering politics and his vision for New Zealand. Turn to page 14 to read the full interview. If lockdowns have left you feeling lonely, turn to page 22 to read about the impact of loneliness on your health and advice for making meaningful connections. Considering a building project? You’ll want to head to page 40 to find out the latest on challenges facing the construction industry. As the leaves start to turn, bring your green fingers inside, with the top five houseplants (and how not to kill them!) on page 38. And don’t forget to try our ultimate cookie recipe. Warmest,

Major projects our focus Kia ora koutou, As summer draws to a close over the Taupō District, we have been reflecting on a fantastic holiday period and positive start to 2022.
We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. Our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is perfect all year round; from the longer evenings to relaxing winter lunches.
Open 7 days from 11am
If you thought our district seemed exceptionally busy over the holidays, you were right, with a huge number of holidaymakers arriving over Christmas/New Year and increases in spending in our local businesses, which was great to see. Same-store card transaction data for retailers on the Worldline network showed spending peaked at $17.5 million in the week ending 3 January, up 11.2 percent on the same week the previous year. Now that 2022 is underway, our projects are a major focus. Over the upcoming months you can expect to see more progress on the Taupō Town Centre Transformation project, a partnership between central government and Taupō District Council which aims to transform our public places and attract people to spend time and invest in the town centre. This year the project moves into phase four which includes its crowning glory – a people-friendly plaza between Tongariro and Roberts Streets, which will showcase the beautiful views across Taupō Moana to the maunga of the Central Plateau beyond. We are confident this is going to be a real game changer for our district and create a quality urban environment that takes advantage of the outstanding natural assets we are so proud of. This is our opportunity to create a world-class waterfront and better connect people to our lake and beautiful environment. Bring it on! Nga mihi,
David Trewavas MAYOR, TAUPŌ DISTRICT COUNCIL

H O One of New Zealand’s most scenicT link golf courses, uniquely C R finger of situated on a narrow O R S land between the ever-changing Whakatāne – where kiwi call Kia ora koutou,
Visitors to Whakatāne get to experience the environment we are fortunate to live in year round. Protecting, maintaining and enhancing this environment is an ongoing journey, and many organisations and individuals do amazing work to help achieve this. Two fabulous examples in our district are Halo Whakatāne and the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust. Halo Whakatāne’s goal is to create a sanctuary or ‘halo’ around Whakatāne. They’re supported by an active group of volunteers and have a range of projects on the go. These include facilitating an accessible walkway in Mokoroa Bush, holding predator trap building workshops, projects to achieve pest-free Ōhope Spit, running a community education programme at Awatapu Lagoon and much more. Whakatāne Kiwi Trust works to maintain our reputation as the Kiwi Capital of the World. Residents and visitors to our area have the unique opportunity to walk into the bush and step into kiwi territory. This doesn’t happen without the work volunteers do to manage predators. Night walks generally take place in autumn each year the best time to hear kiwi calling to each other.
Pacific Ocean on one side and the beautiful, unspoilt Ōhiwa Harbour on the other. Golfers of all abilities will enjoy the challenge of this great links course with spectacular views out to White island. 541 Harbour Road, Ōhope Beach 07 3124486 office@ohopegolf.nz www.ohopegolf.co.nz
The work that these and other community conservation groups do wouldn’t happen without support from sponsors, volunteers and partner organisations. Please make sure you visit the special places they are working to protect, join one of their volunteer days and if possible, support through donations. Go to halowhakatane.org.nz and whakatanekiwi.org.nz for more Information. Kia kaha,

The announcement was more than we expected and we cannot wait to welcome international visitors back to Rotorua. The past couple of years have been undeniably hard, and while local businesses have made impressive changes to adapt to the ever-changing environment, it gives our hospitality, tourism, and international education sectors renewed hope and certainty for 2022. Throughout the COVID-19 response, Rotorua Lakes Council has been committed to ensuring Rotorua remains a destination of choice. In the hiatus of international visitors, we have continued to market Rotorua domestically and developed a Destination Management Plan to drive tourism into the future. This vision has seen us forge ahead and complete many aspects of our place shaping projects. The Rotorua Lakefront Redevelopment is looking spectacular and the new playground has been a hit with tamariki. Additionally, Te Pūtake o Tawa – our newest hub in Whakarewarewa Forest, is now home to five taonga (artworks) which reflect kōrero (stories) that are important to local tribe Tūhourangi. While the year ahead will have its challenges, I am confident our community and business sector will remain resilient and continue to adapt to the changing world around us. I welcome and encourage those from near and far to visit our special place and experience all we have to offer. Kia kaha,

National Army Museum Exhibition Sat, 1 January – Thur, 1 September State Highway One & Hassett Drive,
Waiouru armymuseum.co.nz
The National Army Museum’s latest exhibition focuses on the fateful voyage of the Kiwi troopship TAHITI which sailed unknowingly into a global pandemic. The Death Ship: A Fateful Voyage is an interactive exhibition which turns the clock back more than 100 years to the flu pandemic that hit New Zealand in late 1918, a devastating blow at the end of WWI. The exhibition allows the visitor to ‘step aboard’ the TAHITI and experience how the conditions gave rise to the outbreak.

the man behind the leade T
here’s no question last year was a tumultuous one for the National Party, with the end of 2021 culminating in a ‘changing of the guard’ for the opposition. We thought it was time to sit down with Chris Luxon to find out exactly why he got into politics, his vision for New Zealand, and what he does with his extensive collection of Ryobi tools. Erin Harrison
Who is your political hero and why? I’m a big fan of Barack Obama. I lived in Chicago when he first came into federal politics and I admired the way he built a good team around him. When I worked for Air New Zealand, I actually brought him out here to speak about leadership.
If you could only give one piece of advice on what it takes to be successful - what would it be? I think it is about getting connected to a purpose and mission bigger than yourself. We all have unique experiences, so how do you make
the challenges faced, alongside the positives. When I finished at Air NZ, I could have carried on doing another corporate job here or overseas, but I realised I wanted to do something that would give back. I’m not a career politician, but I do think New Zealand is the best country on earth and I want to help it reach its maximum potential in all areas - environmentally, socially and economically.
What skills have you brought to your new position from your previous roles at Unilever and Air NZ? As a CEO you have many skills that are transferable. It is about having a vision of where you want to go, defining problems and developing solutions to get different results. In the National Party there are 33 MPs who have real world experience that they are bringing to Wellington, and it is my job to use the power of those people.

your life count and attach it to something greater?
Marmite or vegemite? Definitely marmite, with cheese on toast.
What attracted you to politics/ why do you think you can make a difference? I spent a lot of time in the commercial world overseas and as part of my job, I saw a lot of different countries and the good and bad of different systems. And when I was the CEO of Air NZ, I worked with different governments and political parties, seeing many of
What values from your upbringing have stayed with you and shaped your career and decision-making?
C
I was lucky to have two awesome parents, who still advise me to this day. They left school early and went into their respective jobs and careers, but then mum actually came to University when I was there, to become a counsellor. She always trained me, even as a young child, to think about people. She would tell me to always walk across the room to different people and listen, to understand things from their perspective.

My dad was a sales rep, who was (and still is) a big positive, optimistic guy who told me you can achieve anything if you work hard at it. He taught me that when you fall over, you get back up and going, with goals and plans in place.
What is a typical weekend like in the Luxon household?
a movie night out on Saturday, where we grab dinner together. Otherwise, it is hanging out with each other and friends at home, listening to music, boating and going to music concerts.
If you hadn’t gone into politics, what do you think your next career move would have been? I could have gone back into a corporate job somewhere else like Australia or the US, but I felt I had done everything I wanted to in the commercial world. The other opportunity was to focus on a project we are working on as a family, which is the issue of modern slavery. There are 40 million people still in slavery in 2022, so the non-profit route was definitely an option (which it still could be in the future).
If you could have dinner with three people - deceased or alive - who would they be and why? William Wilberforce - who was a leader of the movement to abolish slavery. Winston Churchill. Madeleine Albright - who I have actually been fortunate to meet and hear her many interesting stories.
What is your ultimate Ryobi tool that you don’t yet have in your vast collection and what would you do with it first?

B
Recently I was gifted the car polisher, so I think I am probably someone with the largest set of Ryobi. I had been working on putting up some floating laundry shelves, but then the leadership changeover happened and I just hadn’t had the time to finish, so thankfully my father sorted them at Christmas.

If you were Prime Minister tomorrow, what is the first law you would repeal? The limiting of interest deductibility on property for landlords, as it is restricting the number of houses available for renters.

in oestrogen which can result in physiological changes in the body.” Where all the action happens is what’s called ‘perimenopause’ and this can start as early as your late 30s, lasting anywhere from two to ten years. But while it is a natural part of life for women, there can be a lot of trepidation over what it may be like - especially when everyone’s experiences can be so different.
“There are 40 or more symptoms of perimenopause, but we’re not all going to get everything - or anything,” says Bezzant.

or many generations of women, all they knew about menopause came from overhearing whispers of their mums and grandmothers talking about ‘the change’. Thankfully here in 2022, we can get a bit more real about the word menopause without having to resort to hushed tones - but according to Niki Bezzant, the author of a new book ‘This Changes Everything’, there is still a way to go in terms of educating society about what it actually means. In her honest guide to menopause and perimenopause, she covers what’s happening, what women can do, and what really works, but she’s also keen on encouraging conversation. “I don’t believe menopause is taboo anymore. As GenX women reach perimenopause age, they want to know more, and if I have my way, it’ll be as ordinary as talking about pregnancy, puberty or periods before too long.”
“Definitely talk to your doctor if your symptoms are interfering with your quality of life. And don’t be fobbed off with answers like ‘you’re too young’, or ‘it’s just part of being a woman’.” Mastrovich says there are many treatments to help ease these side effects, and she recommends seeking help from your local health provider (or a naturopath if you would like to explore natural therapy). “You may need a hormone supplement to help manage symptoms, including mental wellbeing, and these can be tailored to your needs. It really is about working to find the best solution for you.”

But before all that comes into play, it’s helpful to know what menopause is. “Menopause simply means the end of a woman’s menstrual periods and the end of fertility,” explains Anna Mastrovich, a nurse practitioner from the Taupo Medical Centre. “However, this is a process and periods may become irregular as the ovaries are producing fewer eggs. Your menstrual cycle may be shorter, longer, lighter or heavier and this is because there is a decrease
At the end of the day, Bezzant wants women to know that they don’t have to just ‘suck it up’ and get on with it. By having the right information at their disposal, women can get through this ‘change’ in their lives with a greater sense of empowerment over their bodies.

ounds too good to be true? It isn’t. Taupō’s very own Diamond Laser Medispa has been dazzling patients with its latest skin rejuvenating technology. Meet the Ultraformer III, the world’s no. 1 system for ultrasound lifting, tightening, and contouring across the whole body.
The face lift with incredible results Using ultrasound energy, the Ultraformer III has become the go-to treatment of choice for patients who may not be willing or able to undergo harsher surgeries. It is designed to significantly reduce fine lines and wrinkles by deeply rejuvenating your skin’s infrastructure, stimulating long-term production of new, stronger collagen. And there’s no downtime; the non-invasive procedure can be completed in a lunchbreak.
In the hands of experts The skincare experts at Diamond Laser Medispa are one of just a handful clinics in New Zealand who offer these treatments and have invested hugely in this new technology. With award-winning therapists and an abundance of experience in advanced skin therapy, you’re guaranteed to receive the highest quality, most effective and safest treatments. Here's how Diamond Laser Medispa can help you achieve your skin goals with this fantastic technology.
Meet the
Ultraformer III
The power of Ultraformer III’s micro-focused ultrasound not only helps to lift and tighten sagging skin but also the deep muscle layer underneath. This ensures long lasting results without the need for invasive surgeries or skin-damaging procedures.
The high-tech alternative to surgery and Botox
If you’re seeing first signs of aging, have weight loss-related loose skin, have had children and are looking for an effective tummy tightening solution, or just want to lift and smooth specific areas of your body, Ultraformer III is for you.
Basically, the Ultraformer III uses micro-focused ultrasound to penetrate the multiple layers of your skin, creating friction and heat which then begins a process of collagen renewal. The collagen fibres shrink and the loose skin is tightened.
Advertorial
How does the Ultraformer III work?
It takes just 30 minutes and the results are instant. Plus, there’s no downtime, minimal side effects and it’s almost pain-free.
Which areas can be treated? Ultraformer III is perfect for any wrinkling or sagging skin, most commonly on the face and neck, but it can be used anywhere on the 18
body – armpits, stomach, thighs, just to name a few. Ultraformer III’s unique interchangeable cartridge design means that it can target multiple skin layers to have the same lifting and tightening effects throughout the body. It can treat large areas or target areas for spot treatment such as eyes, jawline, and brows. It’s designed for all ages, and Diamond Laser Medispa can fully customise the treatments for each person and their needs.
The results speak for themselves…
What is it like in comparison to other anti-aging treatments? It’s non-invasive, non-surgical, and medical grade, and is the only modality that’s completely safe around the eyes. Ultrasound is generally used on babies, so you can imagine how safe it must be. It also works out cheaper than injectables, fillers and other antiaging treatments.
How long do the results last? The results are long lasting. Following your treatment, you’ll instantly see the difference and as your body goes through its collagen regeneration process, with results continuing to develop over three-to-six months. Severe skin laxity may need multiple treatments for best results and mild cases may only need yearly maintenance treatments – it all depends on your skin and its needs.
How much does it cost? Prices are subject to your laxity and skin, so each treatment depends on your needs. Start with a free consultation at the Medispa to work out the best treatment level for you. So, if you’re not sure, or want to discuss best options for you, feel free to book a consultation to have a chat.
After one treatment with the Ultraformer III at Diamond Laser I could immediately feel the tightening of my neck. There was no downtime, no bruising, just a tight feeling in my neck for about 12 days. I cannot believe the difference as it’s been only five weeks. I highly recommend this treatment. Olivia and her team were so helpful and very professional. I am so happy with the results.” – Marlies Anderson
This treatment is quite exceptional. After only 5 weeks the results are obvious and it continues to improve for another 5 months or so. Very excited to have this treatment available in Taupō. Thank you so much Olivia. – C MacIntyre
This treatment is beyond awesome! I have had a neck that was ageing before the rest of me, for a while now. I had tried numerous treatments involving injections and collagen treatments, often painful with down time and a slow-to-see result. I was ready to save up for surgery! When Olivia mentioned Ultraformer III to me, I couldn't wait to try! I am so glad that I did. The result was almost instant, and my neck and lower face just keep looking better & better. I have my jaw line back, and my neck looks so much younger. This result from just 1 treatment! Thank you so much Olivia, for bringing this to Taupō for us. – S Thomson

here’s no doubt that the hospitality industry has gone through a tough time recently. One Taupō local is out to change that, though. At age 22, Fleur Wolstenholme created TreatNZ: a unique free platform for local eateries to advertise events, deals, and specials; as well as provide a onestop-shop for yummy deals for locals. Since launching in Taupō in late 2020, the platform has quickly grown to include Rotorua, Hamilton, and Auckland. We spoke to Fleur about how TreatNZ is helping local restaurants and making dining out easier for Kiwis. “For some restaurateurs, we know that social media marketing isn’t their forte. We take away that stress and give them an awesome online presence, so they can focus on what they do best - creating memorable experiences in their eatery,” Fleur says excitedly. Hare & Copper Eatery in Turangi is one local business who has jumped on board with no regrets. "TreatNZ not only gives the public some fantastic dining opportunities, but they give a huge

On average, restaurants take over 60% of their revenue on Friday and Saturday nights. That means throughout the rest of the week there’s a lot of down time. The lights are on, but post-COVID diners are watching their wallets – and this is where TreatNZ comes in.

The idea began when Fleur wanted to treat her partner to dinner, having just finished university. She noticed that some local eateries weren't maximising social media and digital marketing to attract new diners. She built TreatNZ to bridge the gap between small, family-run eateries and the digital world. The core purpose is to help small businesses build their buzz online, but it also gives locals a way to dine out, as many kiwis now see dining out as an unaffordable luxury. "Discounting has never been included in my business model however, I was so impressed with their social media and strategy that I wanted in! The support has been unreal, and we will continue to work with Treat NZ" says Camilla Baker, owner of Cozy Corner, Taupō. With TreatNZ’s unique platform providing local hospitality specials, you can find deals every day of the week. Better yet, you’ll be supporting local, independent businesses. For just $4 a month or $6 for a one-off booking, diners can access deals like 2-for-1 mains or 40% off food. So, you can save some cash and still treat yourself! ave you felt lonely recently? Ironically, you’re not alone. In the past four weeks more than 650,000 kiwis have felt lonely. That’s 4.3% of the population aged 15 and over, who have felt lonely some, most or all of the past month, according to the latest Government General Social Survey. You might have hundreds of friends on Facebook, received dozens of online messages for your birthday and your latest selfie on Instagram earned all the compliments. Yet, you can’t deny feeling the internal ache of loneliness.
O R R
While often considered a side effect of other health conditions, loneliness is an issue in its own right. It contributes to declining health and at the extreme end, increases our risk of death. This is backed by American psychologist Dr Julianne HoltLunstad, whose research revealed the startling finding that being socially isolated carries the same

This is the loneliness paradox: despite being in the so-called age of social connection, we’re lonelier than ever as we struggle to make meaningful connections with others. And it’s not just making us sick; it’s killing us.
health risks as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and it is more predictive of early death than the effects of air pollution or physical inactivity. Preventing loneliness then, is the key to preventing other serious illnesses.
What is loneliness?
Yet not all loneliness is bad. Being lonely can be a good thing as it drives us to be socially connected, says Loneliness New Zealand charitable trust CEO Cathy Comber. Think about the first day at a new school, a new job or moving cities. “If we never felt
Loneliness is complex. Some people can feel alone despite being surrounded by friends and family, while others may not, even if they live alone. It’s not based on circumstances but our cognitive 22
processing — how we feel on the inside. At its heart, loneliness can be defined as a painful feeling of an unmet social need for meaningful connection.
Helping and hurting
Fran Collett
In New Zealand, loneliness is highest among 15-24-year-olds. According to the 2018 Government survey, 156,000 people in this age group have felt lonely in the past four weeks. “Loneliness is not about who you’re with, it’s how you’re feeling about yourself and others,” says Comber. While young people are often surrounded by people, they’re not necessarily making meaningful connections.
lonely, we wouldn't bother to make new connections.” She says we’re all looking to connect meaningfully with others, to find people we can trust and share reciprocal relationships with, and feeling lonely motivates us to do that, she says.
It’s a finding echoed among the clients of Hawke’s Bay psychologist Fran Collett. She’s seen a growing number of people in their 20s who are affected by loneliness, compared to older adults, and technology is playing a role.
Prolonged loneliness however, can hurt us. This has no defined timeframe but is when a spiral of negativity starts that causes you to see the world as a threatening and unsafe place to be in, says Comber. “That’s unhealthy loneliness, because you actually can’t differentiate between what’s positive and negative for you.” In this state, people experience health issues such as high levels of anxiety and stress.
More technology, less connection
Youth loneliest of all We frequently associate loneliness with being alone and therefore assume it is a problem isolated to seniors but the facts are quite different. While it’s important to address the social isolation of
Thanks to new technology and the widespread use of social media, we are more connected than ever, yet we’re more lonely and lacking in meaningful connections with others. This is particularly true for youth. Many young people create an online self and constantly adapt it to meet the changing requirements of that world, while also comparing themselves to others, says Collett. This leads to self doubt, feelings of insecurity and lowered self esteem. Technology can have a hugely positive impact on people’s lives, connecting them in ways they wouldn't otherwise be able to, but

it shouldn’t be a replacement for personal, meaningful relationships, says Comber. "It’s when we use technology with the assumption that it will create a meaningful relationship when it wasn’t designed for that.”
Then Covid hit Covid has had a significant impact on levels of loneliness, putting isolation and depression at the forefront. The pandemic has separated people and minimised physical interactions — often only leaving us with virtual engagement. During lockdowns, anger, isolation and tiredness have set in. A survey conducted post lockdown for Loneliness NZ, showed numbers have remained high. Prolonged loneliness increased from 4% of the adult population before lockdown to 11% during lockdown, before falling slightly to 9% post lockdown. Certain groups including youth, solo parents and the unemployed were much more likely to report feeling lonely most or even all of the time.
What are the signs? Loneliness is a very easy thing to hide so it can fly under the radar for a very long time, Collett says. There are some signs loved ones can look out for however. Early warning signs are a loss of self esteem and a lack of motivation. Typically, a person will start to withdraw by interacting and engaging with others less than before. While they might be present at social events, their emotions will be removed. “It’s a cognitive state — Loneliness is all those negative attributions that reinforce that feeling — I don’t matter, I’m not seen, I’m not loved, I’m not worthy, people don’t care about me,” she says. Loneliness can lead to mental health issues, eating and sleep disturbances and addictions such as gaming, drugs or alcohol. This becomes a substitute for meaningful connections and a way of numbing the negative emotions that come with loneliness.
Reducing loneliness There’s a stigma to loneliness. No one wants to admit to feeling lonely because it makes us vulnerable and we think it somehow reveals a personal shortcoming. The truth is, all of us feel lonely sometimes. We need to take an active role if we want to make a change.
Practical tips for loneliness: • Be emotionally aware. Recognise you’re lonely and know you don’t have to stay that way. • Take the initiative to meet people, talk and make connections, no matter how small. Chat to the person who makes your daily coffee fix, say hello to people in shops and get to know your neighbours. • Track screen time on your phone and notice which apps are stealing your time and joy. Try locking the culprits in an app vault to make it harder to use them. • Make small shifts - get off your device and meet up with people you care about. • Consider therapy to feel seen and heard. This is a practice run for expressing these feelings in the real world. We can never underestimate our need to be meaningfully connected. “Our social and emotional connection is not simply a nice to have but a survival mechanism,” says Collett. Truly connecting with other people has the power to not only alleviate loneliness, but also improve our health and chance of longevity.

Out with the old, in with the mead… F
orget everything you thought you knew about mead. While it is the world’s oldest alcoholic drink – predating grape wine by hundreds of years – mead is having a renaissance as a refreshing sipper, or perfect dinner pairing. Taupō-based Beehave! Craft Meadery is on the move so that it can share their modern version of this ancient drink with as many people as possible. After 8 years of beekeeping, owner and head mead maker Jay, sold his beehives to focus on bringing Beehave! Meads to the people of New Zealand. At Beehave! it’s all about the flavour - starting with the desired flavour profile and working back to quality base ingredients. Each resulting mead takes on a
unique character from the honey that went into it. Something must be right: their range of craft meads have all won awards at the Cider Makers 2021 Mead Awards. And there’s something for everyone: the Quattro, a four-berry still mead; Honeycone, a hopped mead aimed at craft beer drinkers; Highballer, a Mojito-inspired thirst quencher and Suckerpunch, the gold-winning lemon and ginger classic. Excitingly, Taupō is soon to have its first craft meadery and tasting room. Beehave’s central Taupō mead tasting home is slated for an April opening. Expect a range of carbonated and still mead on tap, in a funky, industrial setting.

Carving out our Future Preserving Māori art and culture Erin Harrison
A
t the heart of Te Puia in Rotorua is the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute | Ngā Kete Tuku Iho, home of the national schools of carving and weaving. The Wānanga Whakairo | National Wood Carving school had its first intake in 1927, moving to its current site in Te Whakarewarewa Valley in 1967. In 1969 the first weaving school was established (now known as Te Rito), and in 2009, NZMACI opened Te Takapū o Rotowhio to teach carving pounamu, bone and stone. Today students come here to practice and help preserve the traditional arts and crafts of Māori culture.
Te Atu Rangi - second year tauira (student) in Whakairo Wānanga Raised around carvings, Te Atu Rangi was always fascinated by the process of their creation. His Ngāti Tarāwhai lineage also had an influence on his decision to carve and follow in the footsteps of his forefathers. “As a student with NZMACI, I consider myself to be fortunate because I have been granted this great opportunity to gain knowledge and to learn the art form of my tupuna.” Te Atu believes that more New Zealanders should understand and appreciate the beauty of Māori art and crafts, to help educate our people and the next generation about the history of the land. “We are each challenged with the need to preserve and promote Te Ao Maori, inclusive of all art forms and Te Reo.” Looking to the future, Te Atu is excited to continue improving his standard and skills and would like to branch out into other forms of art too. He also hopes this is alongside a growing awareness of the importance and significance of whakairo (carving).
Rick Peters – Pouako Te Takapū-o-Rotowhio (tutor at The National Stone and Bone Carving School) A graduate of Te Takapū-o-Rotowhio, Rick is now a tutor at NZMACI and is passionate about pushing technical boundaries to create tribal-style pendants. He also enjoys changing between the bone and stone mediums and has seen a growth in the interest of his work. His design ability allows him to create custom taonga that are personalised to the individual. With art his passion and greatest strength, Rick saw an opportunity to pursue a career - creating art through his culture, and now he wants more New Zealanders to know about the successful career pathways that can be achieved through Maori arts and crafts. Rick likes to design innovative and contemporary concepts, while remaining in sync with his traditional whakairo inspiration. “I’ve loved learning art forms and using materials I didn’t know our people carved before studying here - for example there’s onewa stone in abundance where I grew up in the tribal region of the East Coast - now I do a lot of pieces in that stone and whenever I go there, I pick up supplies to bring back and carve.” 27

A bright idea to stop bullying
Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying Harri Sharman
M
ental health has become a hot topic lately, as more people focus on improving their general wellbeing. One cause of poor mental health however, is still often overlooked: the impact of bullying, from the schoolyard to the workplace. In January 2021, a Ministry of Education survey found that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bullying in the world, with over a third of students reporting they were bullied every month. Those who are disabled, LGBTQIA+ or gender nonbinary, or from a disadvantaged background, often suffer the most. As Mental Health Foundation (MHF) Chief Executive Shaun Robinson says, “Diversity in Aotearoa needs to be celebrated. Unfortunately, homophobic and transphobic bullying directed at LGBTQIA+ communities is all too prevalent. We need to speak up, show that it’s unacceptable behaviour, and stamp out all forms of bullying.”
30
Sometimes all it takes is one person brave enough to start a change. That’s how Pink Shirt Day started: two students in Canada in 2007 took a stand after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The movement they inspired has since gone global. In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day is run annually by the MHF. They help equip schools and workplaces with the resources they need to create a fair, positive culture where bullying is not tolerated.
“Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora” The Pink Shirt Day NZ slogan translates to speak up, stand together, and stop bullying. Bullying is isolating. It can be physical, verbal, social, or happen entirely online - and it’s important to learn to speak up for yourself and for others going through it. The purpose of Pink Shirt Day is to open dialogue, show solidarity, and make clear there is no place for bullying in Aotearoa. That means having conversations with your friends, whānau, children, teachers, students, and wider communities.
How to get involved
1. Visit www.pinkshirtday.org.nz to register. Registering means you’ll be the first to hear when resources and event packs are available to order. These will help your school or workplace create positive, inclusive spaces for everyone.
These high levels of bullying don’t stop when our rangatahi leave school. According to WorkSafe, as many as one in three workers in NZ might be bullied or harassed every year. So, what can we do to create communities that promote kindness, respect, and inclusivity?
2. Mark Friday, 20th May 2022 in your diary and get your pink shirt ready! Official t-shirts will be available through their retail partner Cotton On, and 100% of net proceeds from sales of the shirt go directly to funding Pink Shirt Day’s activities. 3. Fundraising for Pink Shirt Day NZ will help their mission to stamp out bullying in workplaces, schools, and communities across New Zealand.

Use a treatment mask
As well as regularly using a good conditioner for your hair type, consider adding a weekly mask to restore and retain moisture and shine. We like the Masque Force Architecte Hair Mask from Kérastase, as it not only prevents breakage, but actively detangles hair and leaves it silky smooth.
Prevent split ends and hair stress
Swapping to a genuine silk pillowcase prevents hair getting snagged on cotton’s coarser fibres, resulting in smoother, less frizzy hair. Similarly, after washing, pat your hair dry with a microfibre towel (or hair wrap) or old t shirt, instead of rubbing with a rougher cotton bath towel.
Book your next trim at the start of autumn to remove any damaged strands or split ends. Longer tresses may need a little more love: ask your local salon about moisture-locking treatments they can provide for an extra boost.

Invest in good styling products
If you’re prone to frizz, grab a good quality hair oil to help as the weather and humidity changes. We tend to use more heat to style our hair in the colder months, so try to keep straightening to a minimum to avoid further moisture loss. If you do use heat to style your hair, always use professional grade heat protectant sprays and finish with a serum.
Keep your hair down
Natural hair shedding happens faster during warmer months and wearing your hair up can speed this up even more. As the weather cools, and your hair gets drier, tying your hair up in a pony or bun can cause more breakage. Wear your hair down or gently pinned, and if you’re worried about it looking greasy, freshen up with a spritz of dry shampoo in between washes.

Houseplants ... and how to not kill them Erin Harrison
They don’t need much fertiliser, just a couple of liquid feeds per year, particularly during flowering. They can be pruned back after flowering to keep them in shape and bushy and prefer a free draining soil with plenty of coarse sand or pumice.
2. ZZ Plants (Zamioculcas zamilfolia).
F
rom string of turtles, to variegated monsteras and philodendron minimas, there’s a whole new language to learn if you want to be ‘in the know’ in the world of houseplants. Are you just starting out (or switching from the never-fail faux variety)? Best to take this slowly. You want to choose plants that will be with you for the long haul, not those that simply curl up and die because you moved them two inches to the right - we’re looking at you maidenhair ferns!

busy lifestyles and smaller indoor habitats that make owning and tending to larger outdoor gardens less convenient. “Most people are looking for easy care plants and there’s certainly plenty to choose from. Here are the top five that I get asked for, and they are ones that everyone can grow at home.”
1. Flaming Katy (Kalanchoe)
We spoke to Sandy Cleland, from Palmers Garden Centre in Rotorua, to get her pick of the bunch, as well as some handy hints on how to give your new leafy friends the right TLC to not only survive - but thrive.
These succulents will reward you with vibrant coloured flowers that range from yellow, orange, pink and red. Originating from Madagascar and the tropics of Africa, they prefer warmer temperatures between 1827 degrees and bright indirect light. Normal room humidity should be fine, so misting of the leaves is not required.
“Houseplants have exploded in popularity over the last few years, I think this has a lot to do with our
Allow the top half of the plant to dry out before watering as overwatering can result in the leaves wilting.
These plants also hail from Africa with shiny, dark green leaves. The variety ‘Black Knight’ is very showy with its lime green new leaves that darken to black over time. Mature plants are very drought tolerant, having fat rhizomes on the roots which act as a water reservoir. Having these potato-like rhizomes means that as they grow, they take up room in the pot and will be susceptible to root rot and fungus disease if they are not re-potted into the next size pot every couple of years. They tolerate low to bright indirect light and temperatures between 1524 degrees are ideal. Mist the leaves with water if the air in the room is dry and feed with a half-strength liquid fertiliser once a month in the growing seasons of spring and summer.
3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) The elegant peace lily is a classic indoor plant and very easy care. They will tell you when they’re thirsty by

Cut off any yellowing or dead leaves. Feed fortnightly in spring and summer and clean leaves with a damp cloth. Plants can be repotted annually and divided if required.
4. Philodendron With numerous species, leaf shapes and climbing or branching habits, there’s plenty of Philodendron to go around. They do well in average room temperatures (not dropping below 12 degrees). Keep soil evenly moist and mist leaves for humidity.
From plants, pots and décor…
They tolerate low light levels with leaves turning yellow in too-bright light. Repot every 2-3 years and keep leaves clean with a damp cloth. Liquid feed once a month in spring/ summer.
5. Prayer Plant – (Calathea) Grown for their stunning patterned foliage, Calathea are ideal for a lowmedium light situation. As a rule, the darker the foliage, the lower the light requirements. They like to have moist roots but not waterlogged and high humidity, so mist leaves regularly. Liquid feed fortnightly in spring/summer and repot every 2 years.

Growing Pains
Step aside COVID19, there’s a new c-word in the spotlight.
Erin Harrison
F
rom skyrocketing material prices, to supply chain disruption and labour shortages, the challenges of construction are weighing heavily on the minds of not only those in the industry - but homeowners looking to build, and cities that are in desperate need for more housing. So what will 2022 bring for this industry under pressure, and more importantly, is there a way out? Construction in New Zealand is at an all-time high, which has certainly amplified the number of problems being experienced right now, and
40
Graham Burke, Executive Director of the New Zealand Construction Industry Council (NZCIC) says the pandemic has played a significant part in the issues faced. “Yes, we are currently faced with increasing material costs however, this is an international phenomenon and beyond the control of the New Zealand industry. Of course, the labour market is also incredibly tight and while skills shortages are not new, the closed borders have had an effect on the availability of labour from overseas.”
But what’s driving this high demand for construction? Burke says that it is a combination of factors, including the significant infrastructure deficit, housing shortages and consumer demand, compounded by rising house prices which give homeowners more equity and record low interest rates. And with a very strong, forward pipeline of work, there’s unlikely to be any significant changes to the status quo in 2022. David Kelly, Chief Executive of the Master Builders Association, says that while we have been dealing with these issues for some time, they
were further exasperated by last year’s lockdown in Auckland. “This disruption has created unpredictable and rising material costs. It is currently very difficult to determine exactly how much a build will cost. Some products increased two- or three-times last year - no one can predict this.” And skilled labour shortages certainly haven’t helped things along. “The construction industry needs more experienced people across a range of specialised areas. We currently don’t have enough people to deliver the houses and critical infrastructure that New Zealand
needs,” says Kelly. Unfortunately, Burke says these conditions are set to continue so looking to the year ahead and beyond, is there any way out of the corner we’ve been backed into? “Thanks to the Apprentice Boost scheme we have seen a record number of apprentice sign ups which is fantastic however, this will take some time to flow through in terms of lifting productivity as it takes some years to become a fully productive tradesperson. The industry also has large numbers of workers nearing retirement age.” He is quick to point out that recruiting
more people alone won’t be the only fix required. Lifting productivity through upskilling and looking to new methods of construction - such as prefabrication and more off-site construction - are two other possible solutions for the construction crisis. Kelly knows that right now is a tricky time for builders and their customers, especially when it comes to material availability. And he says that communication is more important than ever. “Homeowners need to talk openly about their budget, then all parties can manage the project to deliver the best possible home within the budget available. Builders will need to consult with their clients on using different products, and it is also important to have an allowance for contingencies, which your builder can help you determine.” And Burke agrees - don’t be put off building a new home, just make sure you plan ahead. “People considering building should contact a building professional in the first instance. While there are long wait times for projects just now, there is still a lot that can be done to find the right designer, builder and so on.”

areas often go forgotten. Chairs, floors, walls, behind furniture or appliances, and tight nooks are all places where airborne droplets can land and be missed during routine cleaning. As the weather cools, cold and flu viruses will start to rear up again, making it even more important to protect our loved ones.

ith Aotearoa now two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, and since the arrival of the Omicron variant to our shores, most kiwis should be well practiced at keeping things clean. One thing the pandemic has improved is our awareness of how important hygiene is. The things we touch, people we meet, even the air we breathe every day – all are areas we encounter germs. By now we’re mostly used to wearing masks, using hand sanitiser and cleaning surfaces more often. But what about areas where nasty bugs can hide away, that are harder to reach or can’t be cleaned by normal methods? As we navigate the next few months living with COVID-19, we need to be more mindful of how we clean our homes and businesses.
Where can bugs hide? While most people remember cleaning obvious spots like tables, door handles and counters, other 42
One cleaning method that can be effective against airborne viruses and bacteria is fogging. This method disperses microdroplets of disinfectants, biocides and fungicides that Advertorial get into spaces standard cleaning methods miss. It can also prevent the spread of mould, known to cause health issues if left unchecked. Fogging/misting services also combat pervasive odours and pet-related diseases.
Get protected Fogging has become extremely popular overseas for cleaning homes and businesses, but it’s hard to find a good provider in New Zealand. Thankfully, Smart Fogging Solutions in Taupō are already servicing local homes and businesses with their high-tech ULV fogging machines, which are food-safe, pet-safe and kill 99.9% of viruses (including coronavirus).

M
aybe it’s time for some grout cleaning: a simple and effective way to get your tiles looking brand new again. Cleaning and maintaining tiling grout is essential for ensuring beauty and hygiene, and dirty grout can give your spaces a dingy, uninviting appearance. Here are some tips for cleaning grout - the right way.
Grab a Grout Brush Grout needn’t always be a pain to clean. Simply spray dirty grout lines with warm water and scrub with a grout brush, then let air dry. If you don’t have a brush, use an old toothbrush, or scrub sponge.
Stubborn Stains? All-purpose cleaners especially those containing bleach or ammonia - will damage tile grout. Instead, mix up a solution of warm water and white distilled vinegar and apply to the grout with a sponge or rag. Let stand for five minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.
Make It Shine To get rid of mould and mildew, cut a sponge into 1-inch cubes, then dip into baking soda. Cover the grout with the baking soda/ sponge mixture and spray on water or vinegar. Let it sit for one hour, then scrub with your hands or brush.
Steam-powered Steam cleaners are an effective, environmentally friendly way to clean grout. Powerful enough to remove grease and grime, they won’t damage delicate surfaces or leave streaky residue. They’re also safe for use with vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. Steam cleaners can also sanitize hard surfaces throughout the house.

better conditions - like food, warmth and shelter. Casey Greig from Lakeview Pest Control warns that not only are they annoying, they risk damaging our homes too. “The gnawing habits of rodents can cause damage to plumbing, gas pipes and electrical wiring and they have been found to be the cause of some house fires.”
Casey’s handy hints to try to keep them at bay include:
Get your home prepped for winter D
on’t panic - we still have plenty of warm days ahead and there’s no need to pack away the outdoor furniture just yet. But now is a good time to start thinking about how we can best tend to our homes so that when winter does arrive, we can simply put our feet up and relax.
wool carpets saving you on heating and cooling costs.”
Insulate from the floor up
Prevent pests
Wool carpets have the ability to soak up excess moisture in high humidity and release moisture in dry environments, they are hypoallergenic, and also have natural inbuilt fire retardants.
Floors are an essential part of a house, but they aren’t all created equal. When it comes to the best type of flooring to keep your home snug all winter long, you can’t go past wool carpet (and they’re great for summer too!). “The natural thermal properties of wool fibres trap warm air, creating a natural insulation barrier, which makes for more comfortable living all year around,” says Gary Walker, the owner of Flooring First Taupo. “This thermal comfort can also translate into energy savings, with 44
The last thing you want is to share your home with unwanted guests. The cooler months are the perfect time for rats, mice, ants and other pests to relocate inside in search of
• Clean up around the yard and throw away rubbish heaps • Remove overgrown weeds and surplus building supplies • Stack wood piles away from the home • Eliminate unnecessary water sources • Store rubbish in sealed bins But of course, if all else fails, it’s best to call in the professionals to effectively and safely treat your pest problem.
Declutter the gutter It may not be an enjoyable job, but cleaning out your gutters is an important one. When debris, leaves and mould build up and are not cleared on a regular basis, there’s a risk of gutters and downpipes getting blocked, which Tony Loughlin, from gutter cleaning experts Gutter Rats, says could spell disaster for your home. “If water regresses through your walls, this can cause substantial damage. Even if you have a relatively new house, it still pays to keep on top of it.” Loughlin also says to be extra careful if taking care of the task yourself, as
it can be time consuming, steep roofs and high buildings can be dangerous and it could cause damage to your roof.
Reduce drafts From heat pumps to cosy blankets, there’s plenty of quick fixes to beat the cold. But for a far more sustainable and effective approach to keep your home warm and dry, it’s worth considering how damp, cold air gets in, and more importantly - how to keep it out. Colin Thompson from Rotorua Aluminium Joinery says that over time, seals in older joinery can break down, handles get loose and window stays get worn, all which allow cold air to come in - contributing to the buildup of condensation.
There’s no doubt double glazing is the way to go, to keep your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and Colin also mentions it’s great for sound insulation too. Having modern joinery in your home is essential for ensuring you aren’t wasting money on heating your home for it to only leak out doors and windows that don’t seal properly.
Minimise moist air In winter we tend to open our windows less, but in spaces like the bathroom, letting warm, moist air build up is a recipe for condensation, mildew and mould. The solution? A Showerdome ®. The clear, acrylic dome comes in 13 different sizes and attaches to the top of the shower cubicle to prevent steam forming in the bathroom.

ncidentally, the new Whakarewarewa Forest Loop mountain biking trail is hot too, and it just so happens to have turned out to be the country’s premiere trail for electric mountain bike riders.
Why, you ask? Well, let us tell you the ways.
Dyani Van Basten Batenburg
Firstly, the trail is great in its own right, presenting to you 33kms of ups and downs, runs, flats, berms and hairpins through the beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest. Up for New Zealand Great Ride status, this trail definitely offers more variety than any other Great Rides. E-bikes make it easier to keep up with your superfit friends on those uphill bits, leaving you with enough energy at the end of the ride to enjoy a cold drink at the local pub afterwards. Secondly, you’ve got epic look-out points just begging for Insta-fame – and giving you great excuses to stop for a breather. Yes, it’s likely you’ll need to stop for a break or two, even if pedalling an e-bike. After all, the bike doesn’t do EVERYTHING for you. Finally, the Loop was built with your average Jill and Joe Riders in mind. It’s mostly a Grade 2, with a bit of Grade 3. We wouldn’t suggest this as your first trail (there are heaps of other great trails in the forest for you to start on), but if you’re a confident rider, go forth and shred, my friend. On an e-bike, you’re likely to finish the Loop in around three hours or less, depending on how often and for how long you stop.
The word is out:
Electric bikes are hot
If you find you’re running low on water or energy bars, you’ll be happy to know that along the trail there are three spots to purchase food and drinks, and four taps to refill water bottles, as well as three accessible toilet blocks (a couple of them have showers).
Where to get your hands on an e-bike If you’re not an e-bike owner but want to see what the fuss is all about, it’s pretty easy to get your hands on one and give it a whirl. RotoruaNZ
New Zealand’s best e-bike trail is in Rotorua Maybe don’t ask your neighbour or friend to borrow theirs as the bikes are somewhat pricey and they may be reluctant to loan them out. Don’t be offended; instead, just rent one! Pro tip: Book in advance as they’re becoming more and more popular. One of Rotorua’s oldest bike rental businesses, Planet Bike, is 23 years young this year and has been renting out e-bikes since 2016. The familyrun business offers freedom bike hire and trail info and maps, as well as mountain bike tours catered to solo riders, groups, families, whatever you need. You’ll find Planet Bike on Waipa State Mill Road, tucked right along the edge of the forest, just a bit past the mountain bike hub and with immediate access to easy and intermediate trails. Give yourself time to get fit to just the right bike and enjoy a caffeine boost from the coffee cart onsite. Mountain Bike Rotorua is also well known for their bike hiring, tours and services. Book an e-bike for two hours, half or full day, on your own or guided. MBR has two locations: at the mountain bike hub on Waipa State Mill Road just off State Hwy 5, and at Te Pūtake o Tawa. Both Planet Bike and MBR have highly qualified bike mechanics onsite too, so if you have a bike that needs a bit of TLC, they’re your people. Electric Bike Rotorua has two locations offering bikes for sale and hire. They’ll help you with route ideas for an awesome ride, and their fourlegged staff member Alfie is there for moral support as well. Visit them at their Fenton Street location, or at Whakarewarewa Village which offers exclusive entry RotoruaNZ
This autumn r ide the new
to the forest trails from their site.
How to get started We recommend starting at Te Pūtake o Tawa carpark or Waipa carpark as both hubs offer the food, drink, bike rental and other facilities mentioned above. Plus, there’s plenty of parking at these two locations. Other trails intersect or share parts of this trail, so keep an eye out for other traffic, including trail dogs.
Check before you ride Whakarewarewa Forest is a working forest, with heavy equipment in use. This can lead to the closure of trails, usually temporarily, so it’s important to heed all signs that indicate alternate routes must be used. Trailforks at https://www. trailforks.com/ is an excellent up-todate source of information regarding closures, detours, or any other issues that riders should look out for. Give Whakarewarewa Forest Loop a follow on Facebook, too, for helpful information. You should have mobile phone coverage throughout most of the trail, should you need it.
Spread only friendly vibes Keep in mind that bikes of all types – and riders of all skill and confidence levels – will be on the trails, as well as walkers, runners and even horses! So, it’s important to share with care. We love sharing our forest with neighbours from near and far. Greet your fellow forest users – we love hearty exchanges of “Kia ora!” along the way. When approaching others from behind, call out to let them know your desire to pass them. For everyone’s safety, give horses a wide berth and pass slowly. Rotorua is a great place to ride and that’s hugely due to our manaakitanga. Pay it forward! RotoruaNZ.com

Extend that holiday feeling in Whakatāne this autumn T
here’s no doubt about it, we all enjoyed a sun-filled summer holiday to round out 2021. The weather came to the party and just as well too, as we all needed a great escape. But what to do when that blissful summer feeling ends? Keep it going for just a little longer, that’s what. In the Whakatane District, the sun-filled days continue through autumn until the winter chill starts to descend in June. Autumn is the ideal time to visit if you love golf. Whakatāne’s sun-filled golf courses offer crisp, dry greens yearround, coupled with spectacular scenery. A range of both international-level coastal courses and picturesque country clubs offer the chance to explore the diverse scenery of the district.
Spoilt for choice The eastern bay of plenty is host to six golf courses, all within easy driving distance from Whakatāne or Ōhope. Set between Ohiwa Harbour and Ōhope Beach, with views out to Whakaari/ White Island on the northern side and the harbour wetlands to the south, the
Ōhope Golf Links is rated one of the top links courses in New Zealand. With sandy soils and more sunshine than any other North Island region, the 18hole course is dry underfoot year-round, offering consistent playing conditions. Greg Turner says this of the course, “The seaside terrain is as dramatic as anything in the British Isles and the views are exceptional. This is links golf to match the very best anywhere.” 10 minutes from town, the Whakatāne Golf Club championship-level course offers another spectacularly scenic game. With fast running greens and lush forgiving fairways, the course provides players of all levels a challenging and rewarding 18 holes. If you’re after a road trip as well as some great golf, the Ōpōtiki Golf Club course is worth the trip. This picturesque 18hole course is situated on gently rolling hillside overlooking the coastline and Opotiki township, offering pressure-free golf with tree-lined, undulating fairways. For a more laid-back round, the Te Teko, Kawerau and Murupara courses allow for a relaxing game for anyone who pops in.
Tempt your taste buds After all that golfing, no doubt you’ll be ready for refreshments. Try out Ōhope’s newest hot spot, Wharfside, for coffee, wood-fired pizza or fish n chips on the harbour’s edge. If you’d prefer something slightly more upmarket, book a table at Fisherman’s Wharf. With a fresh seasonal menu and sensational sunsets over the harbour, consider this a must-do. Head back to the West End of Ōhope and you’ll find local favourites – Moxi, The Quay and Cadera. Back over the hill in Whakatāne CBD, mouth-watering options include L’Epicerie Larder, Café 4U, White Island Café and Cigol. After meandering along the riverfront Warren Cole Walkway, take time to stop for a drink at The Comm. Now completely refurbished, what was the old commercial hotel gives you a glimpse of Whakatāne from the early 1900’s. If you sit in the back courtyard, you’ll also spot (and hear) Wairere Falls – a sacred landmark of Ngāti Awa, Whakatāne’s first settlers.
If that’s not enough to tempt your weekend getaway, jump online to Whakatane.com for even more reasons to come.

With school holidays spanning both Easter and Anzac Day this year, we’ve got a bumper set of activities to keep the kids entertained over the break. Check them out! Harri Sharman
Word Find D IY Jewellery Dish This Mother’s Day, get the kids to try something creative, and make an awesome gift for Mum at the same time! Here’s an easy way to make a cute jewellery dish with just a handful of ingredients.
What you’ll need . . . • Air dry clay (any colour you like, or white if you’re going to paint it later) • Cookie cutter • Playdough rolling pin • Small bowl or rounded dish • Any other decorations (sequins, beads, acrylic paints)
How to . . . You can pick up some air dry clay at most craft or hardware stores, but you will need to make this a few days ahead so it has time to dry fully. Start by having the kids roll out the clay with the rolling pin to ¼ inch thick. Then use the cookie cutter (or cut with a knife) to make the shape of the dish from the clay.
Next comes the fun part! Get the kids using their imaginations and start decorating by pressing in sequins, beads, or write in Mum’s name with a toothpick or letter stamps if you have them. Once the decorating is finished, carefully place the clay into the inside centre of the small bowl to create the shape of the jewellery dish. Set aside and don’t remove it until the clay has fully dried – this could take a few days.
Variation: Only paint your dish after
the clay has fully dried. Acrylic paint is best for this and can be found in most craft stores. Then, seal the clay with a varnish or acrylic spray sealer to protect the paint from peeling.

HOT CROSS BUNS LONG WEEKEND
Lay the apples out a sheet of baking paper coated with cooking spray. Add the sugar and water to a saucepan and set over a medium heat. Cook for 5 mins until the sugar dissolves, then stir in the golden syrup and vinegar. • 1 tsp white vinegar • 100ml water • ½ tsp red food colouring (optional)
Optional: sprinkles, edible glitter and other decorations
How to . . . Wash the apples with hot or boiling water (carefully!) to remove the waxy coating and help the caramel stick. Dry thoroughly and remove any stalks. Push a wooden skewer into the stalk end of each apple.
Bring to the boil and cook to 150°C or 'hard crack' stage (usually around 20 min). If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the toffee by pouring a little into a bowl of cold water. It should harden instantly and, when removed, be brittle and easy to break. Stir in the red food colouring here if using.
dipping. Leave the toffee to cool before eating or store up to 2 days before an event in a cool, dry place.
Top tip: You can also roll your toffee apples in nuts, sprinkles or mini M&Ms before they cool for extra wow factor!
Dip and twist each apple in the hot toffee until well covered, let any excess drip away, then place on the baking paper to harden. You may have to heat the toffee a little if the temperature drops while you’re 55
1 batch, 4 ingredients, 100 cookies… Harri Sharman
I
ntroducing the home baking hack taking the lunchbox prep world by storm… the famous 100 Cookie Recipe! Starting with a base of just 4 ingredients, you can divide the dough, customise the cookies with different flavours and toppings, and freeze the batches – just bake when needed! This recipe makes ‘homemade’ a breeze and it’s so easy, your kids can roll up their sleeves and help too.
Helpful hints: This recipe makes a lot of cookies, so use a very large bowl! Also, bringing the butter to room temperature before mixing in will making combining the dough easier.
What you’ll need… • • • •
500g butter (salted or unsalted) 170g caster sugar 395g sweetened condensed milk 750g self-raising flour
Optional: Your choice of flavours or add ins
How to…
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan bake) and grease and line baking trays with butter or cooking oil. Step 2: Place the butter and sugar into a very large bowl. Using a handheld beater or a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until pale, creamy, and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes). Step 3: Add the sweetened condensed milk and continue beating until thoroughly combined. Step 4: Add the flour, about 100 grams at a time, beating carefully between each addition. Step 5 : Add your flavours! This step is optional, but we highly recommend trying a few variations. Divide the dough between separate bowls, one for each flavour. Add your flavours and mix through gently with a spoon. If you’re freezing a portion of the mix, you can do it during

this step. Step 6: Roll into heaped teaspoonsized balls and press down lightly with the back of a spoon. Place onto baking trays, leaving a 5cm gap between the cookies to allow for spreading, and bake each tray of cookies for 10 minutes.
To freeze: Roll dough into a sausage shape and wrap in cling film. When you’re ready to bake, just slice up the dough. Alternatively, form small balls with the dough, freeze on a tray, the place the balls in a ziplock bag. Freeze for up to three months.
Mix it up!
The flavour options for these cookies are endless and are only limited by your own creativity. Here's a great place to start... • • • • • • • • • • • • •
