ith all the ‘un’ words – unpredictable, unparalleled, unexpected – still taking a front house seat in our daily lives, a turn into spring and the prospect of longer days, warmer nights and backyard exploration are music to the ears. And, whilst our thoughts are never far from Covid uncertainties, Christmas on Kiwi shores will be a welcome relief – a chance to take stock of the year thus far and bask in the company of loved ones. A home stay may not have been on the cards come December but it’s the best place to be right now. And, our regions countrywide have plenty to deliver – think new challenges to try – head to our Bucket List on page 41 to read Bay of Plenty local Lisa Willcock’s newfound passion for surfing, accommodation hangouts to shift you into relaxation mode – turn to page 14 to learn why glamping is a must-do, and why a day trip to one of Taupō’s most famous landscapes – Wairakei – is destined to leave you feeling powerful – turn to page 17. This issue we’re not just talking backyard wonders, we touchdown on the importance of mental wellbeing, support and care – especially in the wake of a unique year of challenges. The Mental Health foundation reach out with advice and resources for everyone to call upon, Manaaki founder Pat MacFie shares with us his reasons for igniting a workplace platform for all Kiwis to turn to, and we speak CVs and job prospecting with key recruitment leaders.

C onferenCe in Taupo Acapulco Motor Inn has two on-site conference rooms that can take up to a total 50 attendees. Whether you require a boardroom for an intimate meeting, a venue for a training seminar or even two separate areas in close proximity Acapulco can provide the perfect solution.

Let’s not forget our creative juices! We’ve got some definite spring time fun for the kids and adults to dip into. The world may not be our oyster right now, but there’s still plenty to see, do and support in Aotearoa. Haere pai

We’re All in This Together Kia ora,

W

e have certainly experienced unprecedented times in the first half of 2020. Needless to say, I am immensely proud of what we have achieved as a district and as a country, saving countless lives from a pandemic that has spread like wildfire throughout the rest of the world.

We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. Our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is perfect all year round; from the longer evenings to relaxing spring lunches.

Open 7 days from 11 am

While our borders remain closed to international visitors, it is very encouraging to see our district bustling with domestic visitors. We will continue to roll out the welcome mat so keep spreading the word – the Taupō District is the place to be! As a council, I am proud to say we exceeded our goal of delivering a zero per cent general rates rise. While there have been sacrifices made in order to achieve this, including a number of projects put on hold as a result, we thought this was an important one for us to commit to. There are a number of projects still on the go, including the exciting Taupō Town Centre upgrade project, which we received $20 million in government funding for. This will create local jobs and help boost the economy. Of course, we will continue to do everything we can to support our community in a post-COVID-19 world and look forward to discussing our future as a district as part of the upcoming Long-term Plan. Watch this space! At the end of the day, the key thing to remember is that we are all in this together. Stay strong,

David Trewavas MAYOR, TAUPŌ DISTRICT COUNCIL

OVID-19 has turned our world upside down and backing our communities has never been more important. Council’s commitment to its role in Rotorua’s recovery is reflected in a progressive plan that focuses on our recovery strategies while also enabling us to adapt to new challenges and opportunities as they emerge. Rotorua is taking a ‘Build Back Better’ approach to recovery that aims to build more resilience into our economy and our community. And, the partnerships that underpin everything council does are more important than ever before. We are working closely with iwi, business and community leaders, central government and its agencies to tackle Rotorua’s recovery, while also progressing other important kaupapa like housing. We are doing it together – tatau tatau.

Confidence in our district has secured more than $200m in government funding during the past few years for key place-shaping projects that will help ensure Rotorua remains a desirable place to live, invest, do business and visit. Post-lockdown we are open for business, optimistic and enjoying hosting visitors again. If you haven’t been lately, come and see us for a unique experience. We’d love to see you – nau mai haere mai ki Rotorua! Nga mihi nui,

Economic Recovery Now the Focus Kia ora,

J

udging from the lessons learned elsewhere in the world, any assumption that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is now behind us comes with a distinct ‘famous last words’ risk. That said, our team of five million has done a remarkable job of eradicating this terrible virus – in terms of community transmission at least. The focus now for local government is to do what we can to foster economic recovery in our communities. First and foremost, we want to stimulate business activity and employment and create real jobs, so that more local people are working and earning, and can get on with their lives. We also want to address our city’s fast-growing chronic shortage of housing and land, and create a pathway for healthy, connected and thriving communities of the future. This means providing physical capital to support greater social and environmental outcomes. To be able to co-invest, we must have the income needed to take on additional debt. Given Tauranga’s already high level of indebtedness, this means carefully prioritising our capital projects, cutting costs where we are able to and maintaining our revenue streams.

AFTER

We have a significant task ahead of us, so to succeed we will need Tauranga’s team of 140,000 to step up. Remember to support our local businesses wherever possible because their success is our success. Nga mihi BEFORE

Nature's Best

Glamp the night away...

Glamping [ glam-ping ] Noun Informal. The activity of camping with some of the comforts and luxuries of home.

T

ent, yurt, pod, dome or tepee escape, there’s no denying the term ‘glamping’ has firmly ensconced itself in the Kiwi way of life. New Zealand boasts over 16,000 glamping experiences on Glamping Hub – with 834 in the North Island and 828 in the South. Globally, glamping has steadily climbed the accommodation ranks since 2007 and the term ‘glamping’ was officially added to the dictionary in 2016. In 2019, Glamping Hub tallied over

14

34,000 glamping rentals across its international network – a steep climb in just three years from 5000 in 2016. Whilst growing popularity for this self-proclaimed luxury nature experience is still sitting in its first decade, the origin of glamping is actually nothing new. In fact, tepee dwellings date back to 10,000BC with the Paleo-Indians, the yurt was favoured by nomadic cultures as far back as 600BC, and in the 16th century the Scottish Earl John Stewart of Atholl, put together the first luxury camping site for the visiting King James, adorning tents with luxury interiors and furnishings.

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

Keeping it Kiwi Fast forward to 21st century New Zealand, and although you won’t find yourself sleeping on a royal bed, many Kiwi glamping experiences are focused on delivering a real atone-with-nature getaway, intent on highlighting the true beauty of our landscape. And, for local glamping experts, Totally Tarawera, staying as up-close-and-personal with the outside world is what their guests are there for. “When we set out six years ago into glamping territory, we knew

we wanted to keep the experience as authentic as possible – not to pull away from the traditional tenting setup that’s synonymous with glamping,” explains David Walmsley of Totally Tarawera. “We were the first glamping accommodation in New Zealand to get a consent from DOC to conduct glamping on their land – creating our Te Rata site. And, today we have both Te Rata and Karaka, which is a secret spot tucked away off the beaten track on Maori land, and is only accessible by boat.”

Not your everyday Creating magic is what it’s all about, enthuses David. And, regardless of where you choose to glamp around New Zealand – be it perched overlooking the rugged West Coast Beach at Castaway Coastal Tents in Waiuku, or hidden underground hobbit-style at Waikato’s Underhill Valley, or sitting in a hot tub admiring the deer at Green Antler in Akaroa – embarking on any Kiwi glamping experience is one wrapped up in serenity and calm. “The beauty of glamping is that you have no choice but to step back from the demands of everyday life. Relaxing, reflecting and taking in the trees, the water, the birdsong and nightfall are all must-dos,” explains David. “The added beauty of our Kanuka glamping spot is that you have to get boated in – there’s no in road – so it all remains a secret till you arrive. And, when you do, you have this completely private, secluded beach to yourselves. Many guests will walk the Tarawera trail through the bush and head to the hot pools, or fish off the canoes, but many will simply pour a glass of wine, relax and read on the beach, swim, and use the time to reconnect and reset.”

The young and the glampers Whilst some might think this techfree type of experience would lend itself to an older generation first and foremost, it’s actually millennials more than any other group who are choosing to swap out the accessories for a weekend in isolation. “The majority of our guests are between 20 and 30, and 80% of all guests are Kiwis,” says David. “Glamping fulfils that hankering for something a bit different and maybe a little adventurous. You can choose to participate in active relaxation – walking, canoeing, hiking, swimming – or you can simply enjoy the views. You can go at your own pace, enjoy all the modern-day comforts of a hot shower, toilet, BBQ and fire, all in the midst of nature at its best.” And, channelling the best of the best – nature and luxe – is what a generation of NEOs (Next Economic Order) are doing best, according to Australian social scientist Ross Honeywell, as reported by Australia’s Glamxperience. Touted as socially progressive, high spending and highly flexible with choice, NEO’s are as committed to learning a living as they are to earning a living. Spending less on traditional purchases and more on emotional experiences. Which is why glamping ticks all the boxes for this younger crew – an opportunity to holiday at places that enrich the spirit. As Honeywell says, “They want beauty, design, quality, rich information, authenticity, flexibility, provenance and choice.” And, glamping can bring it all together.

Wairakei commands a powerful position

I

t’s not just lake views and snowy mountains that are synonymous with Taupō – it’s lineage travels much deeper – in fact, well below ground. The Wairakei geothermal field is the regions renowned slice of steamy scenery and powerful influences. On the map, it is roughly 10 kilometres north of Taupō, lying on an active volcanic zone, with the Waikato river running alongside its main feature – the power station.

A whole new world When the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station was built in 1958 by the NZ Electricity Department, it literally became the powerhouse of the community. Its construction brought settlers into the region and a whole new community arose around its edges – creating work for Kiwis and also putting New Zealand on the energy map. The ‘flash steam’ processing was the first of its kind in the world. Today, the original power station is now home to two power houses – with another (Ti Mihi) in construction – supplying approximately five percent of New Zealand’s power. It also supplies geothermal steam to the local

Moon landing The arrival of the power station in the 1950s didn’t just create a community, it also shook up the ground around it. Construction caused the lowering of underground water pressure in the area, so superheated water rose up and out. What resulted was a pronounced geothermal piece of land alive with a hive of volcanic activity and out-ofthis-world imagery – Craters of the Moon. This attraction remains as vibrant today as when it first came to play. A stomping ground of boiling mud craters, hissing vents, sulphuric heat clouds, steam caverns and interesting flora and fauna akin to this wonderous world. Fortunately, visiting Craters of the Moon isn’t a life or death situation, it’s carefully monitored and cared for by a charitable trust and is part of the wider Wairakei Tourist Park. You can safely traverse the 45-minute roundroute along a very stable boardwalk, which is suitable for all ages – no steep hill climbs!

Taupō’s Steamy Affair

Alongside its world-renowned power station, geothermal wonderland and mecca of tourism attractions, the region is also home to the famous manmade Wairakei Terraces which hold central position on the Te Kiri o Hinekai riverbed. The terraces feature silica-rich geothermal waters which cascade down its banks,

pooling in each of its basins. The development of the terraces in 2006, was a direct response to reviving the riverbed and reestablishing the stream which was diverted when the power station was built. Creating the pools wasn’t just about creating a bathing place for locals and tourists alike, it was about paying homage to the cultural roots and traditions of the Wairakei region’s Maori predecessors, explains Wairakei Terrace’s pioneer and owner, Raewyn Hill. “We wanted to truly connect the waters running through terraces with those that bathed in them for centuries before us – the tribes that sought healing and wellness in the riverbed,” says Raewyn. “The building of the terraces may bear similarities to the pink and white terraces destroyed by the late Tarawera eruption, but we attribute ours to the pink terraces that existed here at Wairakei. The geothermal waters were the life source of the tribes before us – enriching the mind, body and soul.” And, just like the unique landscape surrounding the pools, a dip into the geothermal water also promises something special for the skin. The silica and mineral rich properties both detoxify and soothe – so much so that visitors are encouraged not to shower for 24hours after they have bathed in the terraces. Kiwi Business’ Platform for Growth Manaaki provides support for all speak

W

hen the COVID-19 crisis hit in March, Pat MacFie and his wife knew it was sink or swim – not just for their own global design and innovation company, Indigo, but for many businesses nationwide. So, they threw all caution to the wind, pouring all energy into creating a stalwart business advisory platform – one that Kiwis could turn to, and return to, for guidance specific to their situation. Manaaki launched on 25th March and its journey has gone from strength to strength.

Stepping onto to a different platform “Right from the start we knew Manaaki just had to do things differently – not your standard advisory platform of old that was generic in its approach,” explains Pat, Manaaki co-founder. “We knew we needed to nurture people’s journeys through these times and provide highly contextual information and support.” Doing things different, meant drawing on the expertise, trusted connections and industry leaders Pat and his partners had built relationships with over the years – including instrumental backing from the Interactive Advertising Bureau – to catapult Manaaki forward and into the hands of New Zealanders. “The success of Manaaki pivots on the quality of advice – not just free advice. We’re here to give Kiwi business owners hope and provide guidance relative to them. When we set out to create this platform, we knew we had to capture the emotion in the moment and come back at that with care through a business lens,” says Pat. “A platform that not only provides you with incredible 18

information but shows you that someone else cares about your situation.”

The heart of the matter And, capture hearts and hope they have. Since its launch, over 74,000 businesses have reached out to Manaaki, seeking help and expertise via its Q&A forum, with expertise gifted from HR law, to property law, to mental health professionals, to name but a few. And, to top it all off, Manaaki’s daily Instagram live videos now have a following of over 174,000 people. “One of my favourite videos is with Matiu Walters of band Six60. Music success aside, his business model is incredibly unique – especially working within the creative industry – because him and his band members own every aspect of their business. There’s no record producer or manager swiping the funds from under them. It’s models like this that provide impetus and inspiration for other creatives out there.” But it’s not just inspiration driving commitment to Manaaki’s future works, it’s the feelings of hurt in those reaching out to them, says Pat. “We’ve had so many people come to us and regardless of how different their situations are, you just feel their pain. I had a solo mum from the Waikato reach out and she’s built her business up tooth and nail for years on her own. She lives monthto-month – and works hard to do that. When COVID hit, she faced the stark reality of having to lay off her staff and shut both her clinics. This real worry, real emotion, lives being effected, she shouldered on her own.”

Greater ties Next steps forward for Manaaki are central to aiding businesses even further, says Pat – “essentially closing the loop. “We’re developing a second version of the platform in collaboration with AWS, to put world-class business advisory into every Kiwis’ pocket. This means creating increased accessibility to interact with the app via multiple channels,” he explains. “Also, on the backend of our Q&A we’re executing opportunities for businesses to have ongoing communication with advisors – facilitating one-to-one relationships. We’re working closely with the Regional Business Partner Network New Zealand-wide to make this happen.” Support doesn’t have a label on it nor is it bound by size or quantity. To seek advice or guidance, or if you’re keen to share your own expertise and industry speak, reach out to Manaaki, www.manaaki.io

bands like local Whakatāne heroes L.A.B – and every concert they perform here is always a sell-out. Mount Maunganui drum and bass legend Leighton Fairlie will be doing some regular gigs, also Cooper Feels – a fresh reggae, funk, rock band who got together at polytech, are also up and coming, and the Jordan Luck band play here on the 18th September.” Whilst things are now looking brighter for TOTARA ST – who also share a roof with Mauao Performing Arts Centre – ensuring their venue stayed alive (not just played live) was touch and go across lockdown.

Staying Alive? Local music venues the

greatest hit There’s only one thing better than music – live music.” – Jacek Andrzej Bukowski

Where there’s music, there can be love and for many Kiwis that’s the ticket we’re counting on as we head into a summer of sorts. Following a year of significant challenges, it’s the strong local ethos and community focus that is prompting a surge in live music support across our regions as New Zealander’s plan to dance to the sound of their own beat. “The live music scene has swung back around – our calendar is booking up fast,” explains Jay Munro, director of the Bay of Plenty’s renowned TOTARA ST venue. “I was speaking to the guys at Yot Club in Raglan too and they are filling up fast with gigs this second half of year. It’s like nothing’s changed.”

line-up of musicians of course – and that’s a good thing, says Jay. “With our borders locked down, it’s hard to know when we’ll get international bands back over here, but the upshot is that our local scene is thriving and we’re seeing a few newer bands stepping up and grabbing this opportunity.” And, for those of us curious to know who’s taking the stage in the Bay these coming months – don’t expect to recognise every name first time, but expect to be impressed because it’s an original line up, says Jay. “At TOTARA ST in the mix we’ve got

“It was definitely some scary times for local venues – even us being a smaller place with fewer overheads compared to some of the bigger guys like the Power Station in Auckland – it was grim,” explains Jay. “But so many of us got behind the Save our Venues campaign and we’ve been overwhelmed with the support, generosity and awareness it’s created. Kiwis don’t want the live music scene to fade – they want venues to pull through.” Because, at the end of the day, live music is only as good as the person behind the mixing console, the PA system it plays through and the acoustic treatment of the walls that surround it – there are a lot of ‘stars’ that need to align, explains Jay. “The thing about live music is capturing that real essence, that spirit, that energy, and a space needs the right equipment and skilled technicians to bring it all together. And, that’s why venues around the country are humming – we want live music, we want to support local and we want it to sound good.”

Mind Yourself Greater mental awareness is everyone’s game...   Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

This September marks Mental Health Awareness month, with greater onus this year especially encouraging all Kiwis to check in with themselves and loved ones. Like so many foundations operating in a COVID-19 environment, sustaining support and increasing reach to New Zealanders countrywide has been the core focus for our Mental Health Foundation (MHF). When tough times hit, their team picked up the pace and collaborated with All Right? to develop a national wellbeing campaign called Getting Through Together. They also quickly adapted many of their popular resources to provide tailored information, such as Workplace Wellbeing during COVID-19. The goal? To ensure all Kiwis had the right tools and support to draw on now and into the future.

Mentally diverse Because mental health isn’t something that just a handful of people will experience – it’s far more common than many of us realise,

explains Shaun Robinson, chief executive Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. “What we do know is that half of us will experience a mental health issue during our life-time. Each year one in five people do,” he explains. “Mental health is part of the human condition, no matter where you live. Similar experiences can be seen across other countries like New Zealand. There is nothing particularly unique about us in this regard,” he says. There’s still a long way to go to ensure the stigma faced by people living with mental distress is broken, despite legislation against stigma in the workplace, but New Zealand is making inroads, says Shaun.

Not mutually exclusive

The Mental Health Foundations top resource picks include: • Five Ways to Wellbeing and Te Whare Tapa Wha • Worried About Someone • And, as part of their response to COVID-19, MHF produced a series of resources for people struggling with mental health problems, you can find them here: https://www.mentalhealth. org.nz/get-help/getting-throughtogether/having-a-hard-timegetting-through/

Reach out for support, guidance and toolkits at, www.mentalhealth.org.nz. To get involved with mental health week jump on to, www.mhaw.nz

Accepting stress, anxiousness and uncertainty as ‘normal’ and not an exclusive set of emotions and feelings, is also key to mental health care, says Shaun. “Anxiety and uncertainty were not unusual during COVID-19. We know that for some people COVID-19 created challenges and stress. For others, the unity of fighting COVID-19 together and the reduced pressures some faced during lockdown, had a protective effect on mental health.”

Be present The key takeaways Shaun and his team would like Kiwis to really consider – September and beyond – is being available, not being judgemental and seeking out the best support for themselves and others.

Housing a Vision, Creating a Home W

hen we think of the New Zealand’s homeless, certain images spring to mind: figures crouching in shop doorways, makeshift beds, shopping carts loaded with possessions tucked into alleyways for day-time dwelling. The stereotypical picture is not a pretty – nor entirely accurate – one, as it fails to tell the truer extent of its reach and those who identify as homeless. In the Bay of Plenty, this overarching ‘underdog’ stigma is one that local Angela Wallace has been working to undo for many years. Her quest to reach out to the ‘hidden’ homeless in the community was finally met last year, when she and her fellow trustees launched Awhina House – a place of refuge for women. “Women who are homeless we don’t often see in the public face. They are the ones who’ll stay invisible – sleeping in cars, knowing when the park toilets open and close so they can go and in out without being seen; many of them will be working yet silently moving from friends couch or garage each night,” explains Angela. “Because women are typically amongst our most vulnerable homeless – it’s often this factor that prevents them from seeking help.”

After years working as a playcentre mum, running community meals with the people of Merivale and serving many charitable initiatives; Angela decided to action her dream, creating a haven for the homeless women of Tauranga.

“You get really close to the community you are serving. I remember when I was running weekly meals, you’d see the same woman each time and then one week, and then a few weeks later, she would be missing,” Angela explains. “When you constantly see this happening, I knew I just had to act.”

Awhina House has its very own angel   Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

Awhina House, Tauranga’s first homeless sanctuary for women, celebrated its first birthday this year. Catering to up to 11 women at a time – each has their own private room within the complex – it goes beyond just providing a roof. “Every woman who stays with us will be working towards achieving different things – becoming mentally stronger, employment, securing a house for her and her children,” says Angela. “The shared goal they all work towards is leaving here and securing their own home.” Angela and her team journey with their women for as long as it takes. “For some, they may be here for 12 weeks, others longer. And, that’s okay – we don’t issue a strict time limit.” Awhina House hasn’t just filled a gap in the marketplace for homeless woman, it’s opened a safe, secure doorway for any woman to reach out to, should she need to. “We have ages in here from 18 to 60+. Homelessness isn’t targeted. We want all women to know that regardless of life and journey, they have a place with us.” 25

It’s spring and school holiday time, so it’s the perfect excuse to participate in some flavoursome inventions. My three boys and I turned a hand to homemade spring rolls. The result? Super easy and affordable because you can experiment with whatever ingredients, flavours, leftovers you have in the pantry and fridge, and they aren’t as fiddly as they look! Here are our two favourite flavour

combos from lockdown – savoury and sweet!

Next, organise your bench so each ingredient is within reach.

Beef and cheese

Take a wrapper, place on bench, in one corner place dollop a tablespoon of mince, then two teaspoons of cream cheese, and a sprinkle of grated cheese.

What you’ll need: • 1x packet of 20 spring roll wrappers ($3.00 pack in the freezer section of supermarket) • 2 cups left-over beef bolognaise or nacho mince (i.e. beef, onion, tomatoes, and spices) • Half a tub of cream cheese • 1 cup grated edam or cheddar • Sunflower oil

How to: Leave the spring roll wrappers to thaw on the bench – should only take 10 – 15mins. 28

Then carefully roll from the corner towards middle, once you reach the middle, tuck both sides in and keep rolling till the end. Once you have all your beef rolls, either shallow fry on a medium heat for 2 – 3mins both sides, or pop them into the oven (180degrees fan bake), drizzle with oil, for 15mins – turning once. Let them cool down slightly and

Reinvent your wardrobe School holidays are on the doorstep, which means it’s time to pull on the thinking caps and muster up a few entertainment ideas to keep the kids out of trouble. With the weather still playing the unpredictable card, stashing a couple of indoor and outdoor activity options up your sleeves never goes a miss. So, why not get creative and tee up some painting! Freeze! That’s My T-shirt This is a fun DIY t-shirt stencilling activity that’s destined to put a proud smile on many a face.

What you’ll need . . . • Freezer paper (available at supermarkets) • Stanley knife or scissors • White cotton t-shirt/s • Stencil designs i.e. star, butterfly, heart, your hand (jump onto www. henrymagazine.nz for some free stencil designs to print off!) • Acrylic paints – variety of colours • Paint brushes or your hands! • An iron (you’ll need a hand from mum or dad)

How to . . .

D IY T-Shirt

First, take your freezer paper and trace your stencil design onto it. Because freezer paper has two sides – shiny and dull – trace onto the dull side. Then, using a blade or scissors cut out your stencil design. Leave extra paper around the edges of the design. Now, take your t-shirt and lay it on a firm surface or ironing board. Turn your iron onto medium heat and nicely ask a parent to iron your stencil onto your shirt. Iron it shiny side down. Taking your paints – and possibly head outdoors – paint within your stencil design your chosen colours. Be as creative as you like and use either your fingers or a paintbrush – your choice! Leave the paint to dry, then carefully peel away the stencil paper to reveal the design silhouette underneath. It’s not uncommon for freezer paper to come off in one piece – or 20 – but don’t worry, it will all eventually come off.

Finally, call a parent back again and ask them to press your stencil design with the warm iron. You’re done! Wear it at once or give it a wash – great work!

T-shirt creativity for big kids . . . For those keen on turning a hand to some t-shirt fun, head to our website, www.henrymagazine.nz, and tune into the extended version of our kids fun page for our Bleached Spray T-shirts.

then devour! We accompanied ours with an aioli dipping sauce and a guacamole!

Wrap sweetly To end on a sweet note, take another packet of wrappers and switch out the beef and cheese for marshmallows, banana and chocolate. For 20 wrappers, we divided 2 bananas, a quarter block of Whitakers creamy milk chocolate and 40 marshmallows. Sooo good! 29

Marketing in a Recession   Jo Lee

I

t’s an isolated world, times are uncertain, and we find ourselves dealing with the realities of economic downturn. Having the right marketing strategy to adapt and deal with it is now more important than ever. In a recession, businesses will tighten their belts and often, the marketing budget is the first to be cut or completely axed. Why?? Because the marketing spend is the easiest to cut, it’s dollars you can’t ‘see’. Unlike downsizing a company vehicle, or making someone redundant, cutting your marketing budget is far easier to do.

Why should you keep marketing? For brand awareness: marketing is standing in a crowded room waving your hand around for attention. If you don’t wave as often, people won’t notice you as much. If you stop waving altogether then eventually, people won’t even remember you. When your leads and revenue decline, you won’t blame it on the fact that you cut your marketing budget, you’ll blame others and the recession. Your customers may not be able to spend with you right now, but when they are, they’ll remember you. So be there. For competitive advantage: the key in a recession is to keep waving. Even if you must revaluate and redistribute your marketing spend – keep waving. As you keep waving, and others stop – you’ll be in a critical position: you will get more ROI (return on investment) by marketing in a recession than in a growth economy. The room is less crowded so you spend less to gain more sales, versus a growth economy when competition is higher and you’re having to spend more for an ultimately lower return (you’re having to wave 10 times harder). Reducing your market presence will give your competitors the opportunity to take the competitive advantage instead.

The how and why of keeping pace...

What’s the best way to deal with this? Don’t slam the brakes. Slashing marketing investment is a mistake because it weakens your brand and you’ll come out less profitable postrecession. If you’re finding it too hard to maintain your current spend, focus on the core strategies – quality over quantity – instead of cutting completely. Invest in a digital marketing strategy. Digital offers all sorts of options, channels, and ways to track and measure compared to traditional tactics. There are countless ways you can keep your brand presence alive using digital marketing: display ads, search ads, social media, blogs, and newsletters. It cost-effective, fast and flexible. What about respite care? Yes, we offer that too – caregivers need a breather! We will happily organise high quality respite care to those caring for a loved one with dementia or other long-term illness. Sometimes we even organise for the respite to take place out of the home, so the main caregiver can simply be

in his or her own space for a while, without the responsibilities of caring for their loved one.

What is private home-based care?

Miranda Smith Homecare offers everything from a few hours of companionship per week through to palliative care, 24-hour care, dementia care and caring for those with complex needs. It’s totally flexible and you’re not locked in. You can choose how much care you need, when you need it, and how long you need it for.

Is home-based care expensive? It’s actually very cost-effective. You only pay for the care you need, and the benefits of staying in your own home, close to your community and surrounded by the things you love is, for many, priceless. If a client is already receiving government funded homecare, but it’s not enough to meet their needs, Miranda Smith Homecare can work alongside the funded carer in order to meet the care level required.

Yes. Over 95% of Miranda Smith Homecare carers visit just one client, so risk to the client is far lower than it would be if carers were split across multiple clients in many locations. Carers also complete detailed infection prevention training and maintain meticulous hygiene standards.

How are clients and carers matched? At Miranda Smith Homecare, we work hard to ensure there is a good rapport between the client and carer. In many cases, clients and their

Plan an unforgettable Rotorua experience  Advertorial

Rotorua has long been a hub for ingenuity, with a well-earned reputation for inventing unique products such as the ZORB, Shweeb Racer and the Luge. When you marry this creative energy with the manaakitanga that comes as second nature to the people of Rotorua, you get an array of activities guided by passionate people who simply want you to enjoy an unforgettable experience! This makes Rotorua an easy win when planning a spot to meet up with friends or family, to reconnect and create memories you’ll talk about for years to come. Adventure awaits Take Redwoods Altitude and Rotorua Canopy Tours, for example. Both are designed to get the adrenalin flowing and showcase Rotorua’s spectacular forests. One (Altitude) Brand has you traversing 25 Indiana Jones style jungle bridges, 25 metres off the ground, while Rotorua Canopy Tours sends you zooming along six ziplines, a cliff-top walkway (see photo on the left), spiral and suspended staircases, and more, through ancient virgin forest.

Rotorua to the secluded hot pools in Manupirua Bay on Lake Rotoiti. These pools are only accessible by floatplane, boat, or four-hour hike, but we definitely recommend the first option, splashing down in style. Rotorua is also home to a plethora of geothermal parks, each one quite different to the rest. There’s even a freebie in the middle of town, Kuirau Park, whose steam billows and blows across the city streets on windy days. Dining options galore on Eat Streat Now, when all this fun has worked up an appetite, it’s a safe bet that Eat Streat will satisfy hungry tummies. This all-weather alfresco dining area with geothermal heating underfoot is home to about a dozen eateries (and one boutique nightclub) to choose from. Of course, there are also more great cafés and restaurants scattered throughout the city.

Whakarewarewa geyser terrace.

Guided Cultural Experiences Discover Te Puia’s history and lineage with a guided personalised tour – each guide adds a personal touch to inspire and help visitors truly connect with the Te Puia experience. Many Te Puia guides grew up in the valley, sharing the mantle handed to them by their ancestors in the form of knowledge, history and arts.

Inspiration abounds, a journey through Te Puia encompasses the powers that make up this sacred place, and the 180 years of geothermal and cultural history passed down by those who were a part of its legacy.

If you’re a Kiwi who’s never seen a Kiwi, Te Puia provides the perfect opportunity to make it happen. Now you can get a really close look at these endangered birds in a special darkened enclosure and learn how the sanctuary is working to protect them.

The Bucket List

  Dyani Van Basten Batenburg

Learn to Surf B

ay of Plenty local, Lisa Willcocks, took a stand and waved goodbye to ifs and buts!

Life is busy. Verbatim. So, for mum, wife and full-time essential worker Lisa Willcocks, taking time out to enjoy a quiet moment is near impossible. Throw into the mix a lengthy battle with anxiety, and pursing a life-long surfing dream seemed a distant reality. “For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to learn how to surf – always a New Year resolution,” explains Lisa. “However, the hecticness of life, plus my anxiety, has kept it on the back burner.” Till now. Making positive headway into managing her anxiety across the past three years, and inspiring others to be more open about mental health – friends and community – with her story across social media channels, Lisa knew it was time to grab the board by the rope.

Sand man Armed with a head-to-toe wetsuit which – “Was the warmest thing ever, I didn’t even feel the cold when in the waves,” explains Lisa – and soft top surfboard, the super mum first took at turn land surfing with her Waihi surf school instructor. “I practised on the sand, getting my footing right. The hardest part was actually getting up on my feet from

laying position – you have to do it in one swift movement.” Finally, sand time over, Lisa and her instructor hit the water – baby steps and baby waves the focus. “The waves were nice – nothing over my head, and because Waihi Beach is so sheltered, I didn’t feel daunted, it was all very manageable,” says Lisa. “What surprised me the most was the muscles I used paddling out. And, because you can’t kick your feet, your upper body is just going for it – I ached (in a good way) the rest of the week.”

Up, up and a wave Paddling out was one conquest down – catching a wave was the reward, explains Lisa. “I really surprised my instructor because he wasn’t expecting me to get up on my board so quick. But within 10 minutes of being out the back of the waves, I caught one and managed to ride it pretty much all the way in.”

Now, with a more than one lesson tucked under her belt – and a new birthday surfboard to ride upon – Lisa’s intent on pursuing her surfing passion. “After that first lesson, I just knew that surfing’s my something – great for mind, body and soul. Everyone should give it go – don’t let age, busy lives, or doubt get in the way.” Keen to hit the waves? The Bay of Plenty (and New Zealandwide) – offer an array of surf schools to get up and riding with. Here’s just a few . . . Waihi Beach Surf School  www.beachsurfschool.co.nz

Mount Maunganui Surf Academy  www.surflessons.co.nz

Ōhope  www.saltspraysurfschool.co.nz

And, the surfing feeling? “Incredible. It’s really hard to describe that first rush that you get – but I was blown away. For me, just being able to get up and stay up was such a big deal, and my board felt really supportive,” says Lisa. “Because it’s a bigger, floatier board – a foamie – manoeuvring the waves is harder, but for a beginner like me it was perfect because I literally just wanted to get up and ride a wave in.” 41

 Kayaking at Moutohorā (Whale) island  Otarawairere Bay

Explore the road less travelled in the Eastern Bay of Plenty If there was ever a time to take a journey to a place with expanses of space, stunning landscapes and serenity – 2020 is it. With travel plans dashed at a moment’s notice, we look to lastminute adventures and road trips of discovery. And, there’s just at place not too far from home where you’ll really experience a true escape. Whakatāne, at the heart of Eastern Bay of Plenty, is known as a summer holiday hot spot, with families flocking to Ōhope – voted New Zealand's most beloved beach. However, as Whakatāne local and tourism marketing advisor Anna Williams shares, there’s much more on offer year-round. “We’re the sunniest spot in New Zealand. So, albeit for a bit of rain now and again, Whakatāne is a great place to visit throughout the year, whether you’re after an activity-packed trip or just to relax and enjoy the peace,” says Anna. “There’s an exhilarating feeling you get when you have expanses of space and beautiful landscapes almost to yourself.”

If you need some activities thrown in amongst the serenity, you might be surprised to find what Whakatāne serves up. Eco experiences top the list, with a chance to get up close to curious seals at Moutohorā (Whale) Island eco sanctuary or venture into the ancient wonderland of Whirinaki Te-Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park. Moutohorā (Whale) Island is accessible by guided tour only. The 143-hectare remnant volcano is one of Aotearoa’s best-kept secrets, located nine kilometres offshore from Whakatāne. The predator-free island is home to a number of New Zealand’s rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. You can spot dolphins, little blue penguins, curious seals and native birds. Saddleback/tieke, kakariki/red-crowned parakeet, bellbirds, tui, and grey warbler all flourish – many of which are endangered or seldom seen on the New Zealand mainland. A visit to the island includes a stop at Sulphur Bay, where

geothermal springs come up through the sand creating your own hot pool – just like Hot Water beach but without the crowds. Although a bit of a trek from town, the one-and-a-half-hour drive to Whirinaki Te-Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park is worth it if you’re keen to explore one of New Zealand’s most untouched and oldest native forests. The park is a site of significant unspoiled nature, with 155km of walking, tramping and mountain bike tracks, 51 endangered species (the endangered whio (blue duck) is one of many rare birds who call Whirinaki home) and towering 1000-year-old trees – kahikatea, totara, matai, rimu, miro and tawa. This Jurassic-like place is an experience you’ll remember forever. Whether you’re a summer holiday Ōhope regular or have never ventured to the Eastern Bay of Plenty, a trip to Whakatāne should be top of the list.

Sharpen Your Tools T

the Search is On

o be or not to be? That is the question of many Kiwi jobseekers, bracing the challenges of navigating a unique economic environment. Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom on the workspace front, say employment recruitment specialists. In fact, for many hoping to secure a new position, it’s more about playing to your strengths to expand your options as opposed to just finding something.

Sentiments Janet Faulding, general manager of Seek NZ, also attests to. With SEEK job volumes at 57.1% of preCOVID levels reported end of June, Faulding reports in SEEK’s

latest employment snapshot that there are plenty of opportunities to be had by all. “Roles being advertised are for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour. Many of these jobs have training offered as part of the role, so understanding the sorts of transferrable skills that candidates can bring to the job will help to increase their options,” she states. “The majority of the regions showed growth in job ad volumes in the last two weeks.”

Get it on paper Regardless of region, opening yourself up to new career possibilities, transferring your skills and taking time to craft a succinct CV and cover letter, might just be the winning mix, says Carolyn Inglis of Taupō Employment Services. “Prepare to put some time and energy into fine tuning your CV and cover letter in accordance with the specific job expectations.” Bernadette Ryan-Hopkins of Bay of Plenty’s recruitment agency, Ryan + Alexander Consultancy agrees. “If you’ve found yourself hunting for new employment focus on turning it into a positive – focus on the skills you do have that you can bring to a whole new industry or business opportunity,” says Bernadette. “It can be daunting – and it is for many – especially if you’ve been in the same job/industry for many years. But once you get through the grief period of losing a job, take time out to truly reflect on where you want to go next and then target those jobs that play to your strengths.” And, ensuring your CV works for you, for each individual job, is a must-do, explains Carolyn. “For some newly unemployed, they won’t have a CV – or maybe it hasn’t been touched for 20 years.

says Carolyn. “Don’t use it as an opportunity to talk yourself up, constantly think about how your skills will benefit the employer.”

Don’t sell yourself short And, when an interview opportunity comes your way, stay true to yourself by being yourself, says Bernadette.

And CVs have changed radically in that time,” she says. “Edit your CV in accordance with the job you are applying for – don’t send out a universal resume for all 30 jobs. Take the time to really hone the job description and develop the content of your CV in accordance with it.”

Stay off the beaten track

For example, for a retail position your CV may highlight your personal strengths at the top of the page as being customer focused, artistic, fashion forward, exceptional communication skills with IT and management expertise. If you were applying for a front-of-house role in a hospitality business, your personal strengths may state first and foremost you are passionate about food and people, communications focused and take pride in being punctual and organised.

A tailored, up-with-the-play CV, may look something like this:

Carolyn’s advice to all writing CVs and cover letters is to be transparent, honest and concise. “Keep your CV to two pages max – if you’ve started out with six pages, keep the longer version but pull out relevant info for the specific role.”

Begin with a six – seven-line personal statement. A list of your personal skills relevant to the job you are applying for.

“People ask us how they should ‘act’ in an interview, but our best advice is to be yourself,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to call upon your strengths. This is not a natural thing for many of us to do. Kiwis are generally pretty humble and it can feel strange, but an interview is an opportunity to share your passions, your qualities, your insights and thoughts. I like to think of it as having a high-quality open conversation but the topic is about you.” Feeling confident and relaxed is key so where there’s doubt, feel free to ask, says Bernadette. “If you are gearing up for an interview and you are conscious about what to wear, or exactly where to park, ask your recruiter or whoever is organising the interview the dress code and the best parking place. If it gives you peace of mind, then you are going to feel and appear more confident and relaxed. And, at the end of the day, it all helps.”

Qualifications – don’t date back more than 10 years (unless absolutely necessary). Work history – 10 years is plenty. Aim for two-line descriptions.

Interests and hobbies – but not always essential. Two referees – name, company and contact details. In terms of a cover letter, stick to one page and keep it specific to the job you’re applying for. “Keep the job advert beside you when writing your cover letter so you can leverage off it – you should be matching the skills it’s seeking,” 47

Cheal reaps positive outcomes in a technical environment

A

s we roll into Tech Week NZ, easing through the post-lockdown shakeup with conservative optimism, Cheal’s business manager, Rebecca Hawke, reflects on the importance of a water-tight business continuity plan and the benefits of technology. And, how when disaster strikes, the capacity to deliver to your clients and retain a highly valued team, becomes your one focus.

No time to waste engineers | surveyors | planners

With 48 hours notice of full lockdown, Cheal had 80 employees across six locations to organise. Within 24 hours, a steady stream of equipment was being relocated and set up in 80 homes and the offices were empty except for those making final arrangements. Having a solid remote access system enabled all employees to work from home seamlessly and immediately. “We already had a business continuity plan in place,” explains Rebecca, “and whilst we reviewed its fitness for purpose in this unique environment, it was already working really well for us.”

Keeping the ball rolling Centrally-located technical software licensing ensured that engineers and surveyors were able to continue converting field data into survey plans, model designs for civil infrastructure projects, and resource management planners were able to write and lodge resource consent applications to councils. Client and

internal meetings were held by various video conferencing platforms. Whilst field work was out, everything else was well and truly on track. There was even the opportunity for research and developing skills using some technical toys (see images). The lockdown also taught Cheal that change is okay. And, coming out the other side, many employees continue to work from home more regularly and/or with reduced hours. It’s all become a ‘new normal’ and it’s certainly proving very efficient with effective management in place.

Nothing they weren’t prepared for Dragged into modern day times or thrown in the deep end? Not Cheal. Its engineers, surveyors and planners have long surpassed stone age operations. “Our team work with some of the most advanced technology available in the industry,” explains Rebecca. “The capabilities of software are increasing by the day and whilst it takes consistent and significant investment, no business should be without it.” To reach out to Cheal, contact Rebecca Hawke, business manager and principal at Cheal’s head office in Taupō visit www.cheal.co.nz, call 07 378 6405 or email info@cheal.co.nz.

We Heart Natives

It’s definitely greener on this side Native planting on the home front

  Deepika Sulekh

W

hether it’s for increased wellbeing, an opportunity to explore the wonders of our regions, or play a part in environmental restoration, us Kiwis are intent on getting up-close-and-personal with nature. And, with a global crisis never far from our minds, tuning into a greener way of doing and living is rewarding for both body and soul.

Unfortunately, a handful of our unique trees continue to face difficulties across the board, including kauri dieback, relentless attack from pests, myrtle rust, damage to tree roots and sensitivity to fires. Not to mention increasing urbanisation resulting in fewer trees and more buildings –not a save and protect measure.

While writing this during Conservation Week 2020, I learnt a lot about New Zealand’s wildlife and our growing appreciation for native trees. So, what do native species offer our country that non-native species don’t? As it turns out, a lot.

Thankfully, there are initiatives in New Zealand that are working to restore our native forests and dedicated to planting native trees – which Kiwis can get involved with – these include:

New Zealand’s unique eco-system has allowed our native plants to develop extraordinary characteristics that exist nowhere else on earth. In fact, 80% of our trees, ferns and flora are endemic (only found in New Zealand). Not only are they part of our Kiwi identity, they clean up our waterways, protect our ecosystems, reduce the effects of climate change, and provide sustainable habitats for thousands of native birds and bugs. Native trees are far more likely to thrive where they’ve adapted to the soil, climate and local wildlife over time. This means they’re easier to establish and grow, requiring less hands-on intervention, and their water needs taken care of by the local climate – plus they don’t require fertilisers or pesticides in order to survive.

The solution?

Looking to turn your own backyard into a native sanctuary this spring without transforming it into a complete forest? Native planting is possible on a minor scale – in fact there are a few key native shrubs and plants that are destined for small-tomedium gardens. Think a maximum of 1m in height and staggered planting approx. 60cm – 1m apart. Native plants to reach for include: Corokia – Frosted Chocolate, Hebe – Red Edge or Wiri Mist, Coprosma Lobster, King fern, Kakabeak, Everlasting Daisy – ground cover, Dwarf Horopito, Pittosporum Golf Ball and Pohutukawa Tahiti.

Trees That Count Trees That Count is a conservation charity with the vision of helping plant 200 million native trees across the country. People and organisations gift or donate trees which are then planted and cared for by groups across the community – building an online community marketplace that connects tree planters with funded trees. Prices start from $10 per tree. Find out more: www.treesthatcount.co.nz

Native Forest Restoration Trust Dedicate a tree or grove of trees as a gift, celebration of an event or a way to remember a loved one. Your dedicated trees will grow to form part of a newly restored native forest protected by the Trust for all New Zealanders to enjoy. Dedicating a single tree costs just $25 or dedicate a small grove from $100. Find out more: www.nfrt.org.nz 51

• 200g / 7oz salted butter, softened • 200g / 7oz caster sugar • 4 free-range eggs • 1tsp vanilla extract • 200g / 7oz almond flour • 50g / 1.8oz plain or spelt flour  • Zest and juice of one lemon • 1tbsp rose water  • 100g / 3.5oz fresh or frozen strawberries, green parts removed and halved • 60g / 2oz fresh or frozen blueberries • 60g / 2oz fresh or frozen raspberries

• 2tbsp strawberry purée (optional, but if making simply blend together 100g / 3.5oz cooked strawberries and 2tbsp icing sugar in a food processor) • Fresh or dried rose petals (optional)

Step 6: Bake for approximately 30minutes. The cake is ready when golden in colour, springy to the touch, and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

For the icing... • 150g / 5.3oz salted butter, softened • 250g / 8.8oz icing sugar • 1tsp vanilla extract • 100g / 3.5oz cream cheese • 1tsp rose water • ⅓ cup each of crushed up freezedried raspberries, strawberries and blueberries (optional)

How to cake it – we mean make it! Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F on fan bake. Step 2: Line 2 x 22cm / 9" cake tins with baking paper. Step 3: To make the cake, in your electric mixer bowl cream the butter and sugar until pale, light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add in the vanilla. Step 4: Gradually fold in the almond flour and flour, and mix until just combined. Take care not to overmix. Finally, fold through the lemon zest and juice and rose water. Step 5: Evenly divide the batters between the two cake tins and spread out to the sides. Dot in the

Step 7: Allow the cakes to cool in their tins for approximately 10minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack. Step 8: Meanwhile, make the icing. In your electric mixer bowl, beat the butter and icing sugar on high until seriously light and fluffy. Gradually add the cream cheese, followed by the vanilla and rose water. The icing should be smooth, creamy and thick. Finally, fold in the crushed freeze-dried berries. Step 9: Once the cake is completely cool, spread approximately a third of the icing onto one layer and spread the other two thirds directly on top. Drizzle over the strawberry purée if using and decorate with fresh flowers – or whatever you have on hand!
