This tasty pull-apart bread recipe is perfect for Halloween parties! Kids can help by kneading the dough and shaping the spider, and this spooky snack is great for sharing. You can use pre-made bread dough if you’re short on time, but we think it’s much more fun to make it from scratch.
What you’ll need…
• 14g yeast • 500ml warm water • 2 tbsp white sugar • 60ml olive oil • 1 tbsp salt
Happy Halloween! Halloween celebrations are a great time to get the kids to flex their creativity and get hands-on in the kitchen. Whether it’s making decorations or baking spooky treats, there’s always something exciting to do at this time of year.
Cheesy pull-apart spider bread
• 1 egg • Any herbs or seasonings you like • 45g parmesan or tasty cheese • 750g bread flour • Dip of your choice How to…
Step 1: Mix yeast, warm water, and sugar in a large bowl, then set aside for 5 mins. Step 2: Stir the olive oil, salt, cheese, herbs, and 375g flour into the yeast mixture. Step 3: Gradually add the other 375g of flour and form into a dough ball. Step 4: Knead dough for 10 mins until smooth and elastic. Step 5: Place in an oiled bowl, turning to cover. Cover bowl with a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place to rise for 1 hour. Step 6: Preheat the oven to 180°C fan/ 200°C bake. Step 7: Once the bread has doubled in size, push down onto a flat surface to release any excess air.
Step 8: Cut the dough in half, then one half into quarters to make three balls of dough. Step 9: Roll the largest and one of the smaller pieces into two balls to make the spider’s head and body. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Step 10: Divide the last ball into four pieces then roll into long thin sausages to make the legs. Step 11: Place these in the centre between the head and body to make eight legs. Step 12: Brush egg wash all over the spider, and add extra cheese on top if you like. Step 13: Bake in the oven for 25-30 mins. Step 14: Leave to cool, then cut out a dipping dish hole in the spider’s back. Add your chosen dip and serve!
Spooky suncatchers
Suncatchers are a fun, colourful way to brighten up kids’ rooms and windows.
Normally made from glass, we’ve found a cool way of using coloured tissue paper to create a doit-yourself version. For Halloween, you could make a pumpkin, a black cat, a creepy ghost – or anything you can imagine! Here’s how to do it.
What you’ll need...
• A roll of contact paper (available from most homeware or stationery stores)
• Tissue paper in different colours • Scissors • Double sided tape How to…
Step 1: Peel the backing from a piece of contact paper, cut into your desired shape and place down onto a surface sticky-side up, secured with double-sided tape. You can do this straight onto the window. Step 2: Cut up some small pieces of tissue paper in various colours. To create your design, start sticking them onto the contact paper. Step 3: Once the design is filled, place a second sheet of contact paper down over the top and seal. If hanging the suncatcher, punch a hole near the top and use a ribbon or string to attach it.

Tip: If you can’t find contact paper, you can use wax paper and glue instead.
