ou can tell winter’s arrived when the price of avocados goes through the roof, when the washing stays on the line for three days – as opposed to three hours, when the BBQ invites drop off because it’s dark at six, and you overhear dad telling his childhood anthem, “when we were kids, we had to walk to school on icy roads – with no shoes,” and mum’s story of, “standing in cowpats to warm our feet up,” has the kids gawking at grandma in disbelief. Whilst the creature comforts of old may have changed considerably – we’ve swapped cowpats for actual footwear – winter’s no time to squirrel ourselves away for a season. Time flies too fast – just ask grandma.
ConferenCe in Taupo
So, with productivity at the fore, we’ve lined up winter reads to ignite creativity – kids, turn to page 30 for our DIY projector, to harness mental wellbeing – we sit down with the incredible Jimi Hunt – see page 38, to inspire us to dig deeper into our cultural roots – turn to our Bucket List on page 13, to deliver on innovation – Lindsay Faris, Groundswell’s festival director, prepares us for their out-of-the-box 2019 event on page 14, and we feature words to spur action – in the garden, in the kitchen and body matters. Before we leave you with our pages, there's one important question we need to answer, "Why call your magazine ?" Well, there is a personal connection to that name but long story short, we've just never met a Henry we haven't liked! Enjoy!

Brace for an Eventful Season
W
e’ve now farewelled another amazing summer, where we saw so much happening in the Taupō District.
We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. Our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is perfect all year round; from the longer evenings to relaxing winter lunches.
Open 7 days from 11 am
Among a host of events, earlier this year we celebrated with our IRONMAN whānau as we marked the milestone of 35 years of their presence in New Zealand. This had all the extras you could imagine and more. Local school children again penned letters to the athletes which were placed in their race packs, over 2,500 volunteers lent a much needed helping hand, and some lucky athletes even got the chance to have a unique cultural experience with Ngāti Tūwharetoa, performing a haka at the Athletes dinner. This was just one of several events we love hosting here in the Taupō District. Looking forward to the cooler weather we see the heartiest of Turangi residents and visitors take part in the River Shiver – yes, they’re gonna take the plunge! We’ll play host to countless running events across Taupō and Kinloch, and Matariki is just around the corner too. All this and another Malcolm Flowers Insurances Winter Festival to look forward to – we certainly are spoilt for choice! To find out more remember to visit www.lovetaupo.com – it’s all laid out there for you to explore. There is nothing like spending some time out and about in our great district and sampling some of our local cuisine, and if you’re visiting stay a while with some of our accommodation providers, there really is something for everyone! Enjoy the colours the cool season brings and wrap up warm as we enter another winter!

H
ow quickly time flies – this year’s local body elections are really zipping towards us.
Here in Tauranga, we’ll be encouraging as many people as possible to vote before polling closes on October 12. This year the method of voting has changed to the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. Under STV, voters will rank their preferred candidates with numbers (1, 2, 3, etc) instead of placing a tick next to one candidate’s name. Voters will be able to rank as many or as few candidates as they wish. Those who favour this system say the main advantage is that your vote is more likely to influence the result than under the ‘tick’ system – in which you usually only get to choose one candidate. Over the next few months we’ll be doing our best to make sure everyone understands the new voting system and are able to cast their votes correctly. I would personally like to encourage you to enrol to vote. You can do this right now, by visiting elections.org.nz. Make sure your voice is heard!

Learn Te Reo
T
e Reo Māori is only found in New Zealand. It is our language. It connects culture, ways of doing and ways of being. And, it has got to be living to be lived, says Ngareta Timutimu, Tauranga Moana Te Reo Māori advocate, project manager of Education at Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi Iwi Trust and coordinator of the Matapihi Te Reo Project. “If you learn Te Reo you learn the cultural customs and gain greater access to knowledge. You align the acts of doing with greater meaning.” For Ngareta, Māori language is her priority and she firmly believes that learning Te Reo is an opportunity all New Zealanders have a right to and should embrace.
Understand the traditions “When we take part in a haka or share a hongi, do we know what we are talking about or really sharing with people?” Ngareta questions. “So, by learning the language you gain greater access to the true ethos of the culture. Start simply, focus on a specific custom – a hangi for example.” When the hangi is laid, it is forbidden to walk on it, as it will then spoil and become inedible. I te wa e takoto ana nga Hangi, he tapu ki te haere i runga i taua mea, ka waiho hei taonga parakete, ka kore e taea.
Discover who you are “As we teach our young mokopuna in class, you must identify yourself,” she says. “Learn how to introduce yourself in Te Reo; describe your parents and where you belong.” My name is: Ko _ tōku ingoa. My parents are: Ko _ rāua ko _ ōku mātua. The mountain that I affiliate to is: Ko _ te Maunga.
Foster your learning Even those who have spoken Te Reo since birth still need to spend time engaging with the language.
Horse trek through native bush and working sheep and cattle farms with stunning views of Lake Okareka, Lake Tarawera and Mount Tarawera. Rides and horses to suit all abilities from beginners to experienced riders.
“As part of our Matapihi Te Reo Projects we started a Kaumātua club for our elders two years ago where we meet every Tuesday at a café for an hour to speak Te Reo,” says Ngareta. “We talk everyday activities and life – all in Te Reo. We even text in Te Reo! And we have noticed improvements in ourselves.” It’s vital to stick with your learning, presses Ngareta. “Many people work five days, 9 to 5. They may only be able to commit to a 30minute Te Reo class once a week – if that,” she says. “Be active with Māori language. Take it home, create deliberate acts to speak it.”

One Out-of-the-Box:
Groundswell 2019
I
f learning how to power an island, rubbing shoulders with Google experts, checking in on the latest e-bike technology and marvelling at the CBD laneway art installations, were just a few of the innovative creations and technologies that got you moving and shaking at Tauranga’s Groundswell festival last year – then brace yourself for 2019, says Lindsay Faris, organiser of the inaugural event.
“We don't just innovate for fun, or because it might be trendy, we innovate to solve real problems – to stay afloat, do things faster, better, stronger, to push the boundaries of what we never thought possible, to solve big intransigent problems that demand collaboration and innovation,” enthuses Lindsay. “Every event and speaker will touch on this – and I’m excited to see what comes up!”
“This year there truly will be something for everyone. Some events we’re taking bigger, like Little Innovators, and other things will be totally fresh,” she says. “Think a Tertiary aged event – Circuit Breakers Innovation Kete – focussed on personal discovery and development using innovation tools; an innovation focussed Maori Business event; a Sports Innovation Summit; and a dinner party extravaganza in partnership with Melbourne’s Well Sensered Food.”
And if you’re a local business or start-up planning on a full day of discovery – why not begin at breakfast, suggests Lindsay.
Why such a diverse line-up? Because this year’s Groundswell theme is centred on ‘why’ we innovate. 14
“We’re launching the Out of the Box Breakfast – an event like never before. We’ve got local, national and international speakers, fab food, coffee carts – the whole nine yards – set to go,” she explains. “It’s aimed at SME businesses, start-ups, local government leaders and business alike, who want to come and hear the war stories of innovation in the trenches – how it can be done by everyone!” And as the changing pace of Tauranga ensues – there’s no better time to take stock of what’s happening in and around our place. “We’re proving ourselves to be a city that isn’t prepared to sit back and watch the world pass us by. We’re embracing change and fostering an innovative mindset throughout our business and community networks,” says Lindsay. “Groundswell isn’t just about revealing new technologies, it’s about unbottling the thought and motives that go into creation – and sharing that journey.” Two weeks of fresh ideas and international speakers: This year's Groundswell Festival will be held from 26 August to 9 September 2019. Go to www.groundswellfestival.nz for more information.

lowing from its geothermal spring into the Waikato River and merging at Hipapatua, the sacred waters of Otumuheke, more commonly known as Spa Thermal Park in Taupō, is probably one of the most loved thermal springs in our region.
Taupō’s Sacred Sanctuary Deepika Sulekh
Cherished by visitors and locals alike, this geothermally heated natural stream is a sacred treasure for Taupō, protected by local hapu of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Iwi and of deep cultural significance to Māori. Historically, the stream was a landing point for waka where canoes traversed up and down the river and from across the lake, and where people gathered to cleanse and heal themselves in the mineral waters – physically and spiritually. Today, it remains a popular hotspot for its therapeutic benefits and a soak to unwind under the waterfall or in the natural rock pools. Although it’s no longer a secret after countless visitors have realised its worth and shared it all over the world. Following its growing popularity, the spot was redeveloped over four months last year to include new toilets, changing rooms, viewing platforms and a bridge, making it an even more convenient and enjoyable experience. Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, Patuiwi Māori Reserve Trust, Taupō District Council, the Department of Conservation and the Waikato Regional Council collaboratively accomplished this revitalisation project with a focus on protecting the cultural and environmental heritage value. 16
“Tauhara stands above as a palisaded fence for the people. Flowing down are the life-giving waters for the people. Tauhara lies beneath, as a foundation for me. The sacred waters well up for the people.” — Patuiwi Maori Reserve Trust
The most recent addition to the space, LoveOtumuheke Café, now overlooks the water and offers an after-swim coffee, refreshments and great hospitality. “The first and foremost fundamental priority for the Patuiwi Māori Reserve Trust was for the restoration of the ‘mauri’ (spiritual life force) and cultural integrity of the Otumuheke
Stream and its surroundings,” says Matiu Heperi Northcroft, chairman of the trust. Visit the stream today and you can still see a touch of its past, maintaining the same cultural integrity and enriching the architecture with aspects such as palisade fences and signage explaining its history and ecological significance.

Snow Experiences Now Available for Everyone!
T
he new $25 million Sky Waka gondola at Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu is set to be a game changer for tourism in the Central North Island. The 50 Sky Waka gondola cabins will feature floor-to-ceiling glass for breathtaking views, internal ski racks, audio and lighting and individual leather seats offering business class luxury to passengers befitting of the UNESCO Dual World Heritage status of Whakapapa Ski Area. Each cabin accommodates 10 passengers and even the tallest skiers will be able to stand upright in the cabin with more than two metres of internal clearance. The Sky Waka will run from the Top of the Bruce base area directly to the awardwinning, newly refurbished Knoll Ridge Chalet, transporting 2,400 people per hour – over 1.8 km – in approximately five minutes. The Sky Waka will be open 365 days of the year and open a range of alpine experiences for all ages – it will be wheelchair accessible too.
18
Most years, there is snow at the top of the gondola until Christmas, so this is an ideal way for those who have never seen or touched snow before to access it very easily.
Mid-Winter Feast at the Snow
Dinner with a view Once at the top, you’ll have the option of three eating establishments to choose from, including the new Pinnacles Restaurant which will offer a delicious buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant provides the best view of the Pinnacles Range and in winter, you’ll get a great view of the skiers and snowboarders as they slide past too. You’ll also be able to combine your gondola ticket with a dining option, and for the more adventurous, there are two glass floor cabins, providing 360-degree views of the volcanic landscape! Alongside Pinnacles, The Larder will offer quick and healthy meal options and 4 Peaks Alley will be located in the brand-new downstairs area of the Knoll Ridge Chalet. Naturally, great coffee and cold beverages will always be available for those just wanting to relax on the outdoor deck and soak in the stunning landscape. Throughout the winter months, there will also be a sledding zone on the upper mountain which is an ideal activity for those who are non-skiers.
One of the first events planned for the Sky Waka and Pinnacles Restaurant is the ‘Mid-Winter Feast at the Snow’ – part of the annual Taupō Winter Festival – held July 10th. Tickets are available from the Mt Ruapehu Snow HQ on Roberts Street in Taupō or by emailing promotions@mtruapehu.com. Tickets start at $89 and return transport can be arranged from Taupō. It’s a night that promises great food and fun to celebrate winter in our region and what better place to do that than in the snow! Private events, Christmas functions and even weddings can now be catered for at Whakapapa with the Sky Waka providing great reliability in inclement weather. Christmas functions will be popular so get in early to book your team in as space is limited. For more information, email info@mtruapehu.com.

Aspire to Fronting Up to a Grey Matter Dee Ellwood

ur population isn’t just booming, we're living longer and we're choosing to work longer. The world over is experiencing a migration of millennials and seniors. New Zealand is home to a ‘silver wave of workers’ – as described by Statistics New Zealand – and a generation of millennials – “who are forming the backbone of various regions’ emerging labour forces and consumer bases,” says global research company, Brookings Institution. Throw into this mix the rise of the ‘gig’ economy, a movement towards increased flexibility in the workforce, as many of us shun the ‘one job for life’ mindset and embrace freelance and contract job opportunities for multiple skills.
With so much change happening on the horizon, how should we broach the subject of retirement planning? Especially as we all sit in different driver’s seats. For many, retirement planning is likely to stem from risks taken in our mid-years – buying property or businesses – pushing the returns on investment. But, for those of us coming into retirement, we might steer more towards returns on life – as opposed to investment. Instead of tying up money in another property, our hard-earned dollars might be better invested in something more liquid – i.e. shares – so we have ease of access to cash as and when required.

Retire The disciplinary faction ... Aiming for holidays away with the grandchildren? A motorhome to travel around in? Achieving those retirement ambitions requires discipline for the majority of us i.e. staying on top of the mortgage, working hard in our businesses – regardless of the ‘gig’ work type or opportunities we choose to follow. And, getting into KiwiSaver as early as possible is a fail-safe way of steadily saving towards your future and retirement, says Ali Murray of Empower Insurance. “The great thing about KiwiSaver is that you can choose to access your funds if you are a first home buyer, have suffered a serious illness, a significant hardship, and upon death it will be paid to your elected recipient. Or from the onset save for the future until reaching retirement age. It’s controlled, it gives New Zealanders – of many whom haven’t ever considered investing before – access to a diverse investment portfolio without having to step outside their comfort zones.” Considering different insurances – medical, trauma, income protection,
mortgage protection and life – in your younger years stands to benefit you considerably in later years, explains Ali. Protecting your income is your biggest asset, says Ali. “More working age Kiwis are disabled by illness than accident. It is much more affordable to take out medical and life insurances when you are younger before you experience medical conditions that then become pre-existing conditions,” she says. “Life insurance in your mid-30s may only cost $18 per month, and in your later years it is a nest egg to protect you or your spouse in the unfortunate event of either one of you passing.”
Taupō Plan Service is an architectural design and drafting business committed to achieving quality and excellence, on time and on budget.
Super powers? Relying on superannuation or an inheritance windfall in later years is also not a 100% given – ‘she’ll be right’ doesn’t always play out, cautions Ali. “If you’re not planning on getting into the property market – at any stage of your life – then prioritising your insurances and KiwiSaver, and implementing additional saving goals, will set you in better stead to supplement your retirement. Taking the ‘worry about it later' mindset just won’t do it. Look at your lifestyle now and consider how you want to live in your retirement – for many superannuation just won’t cut it.”

f you’ve been keeping an eye on property news over the past 12 months, you could be forgiven for getting a bit confused. One minute things are flatlining, the next prices are at record highs! So who, and what, can you believe?
Micro-climates exist in the property world The media often make sweeping generalisations when it comes to reporting on the property market. So, it is important to look further into the numbers to understand what is relevant to your home’s location. For example, Taupō isn’t really susceptible to huge fluctuations, and we’ve had some record-breaking months recently.

property won’t fetch top dollar just because the daily paper is saying so.
Headlines are meant to grab your attention Remember, headlines are written to draw you in/sell papers, so it’s critical to have an open mind when reading a heading like, ‘Biggest price fall since the recession!’ Take these sensationalised statements with a grain of salt – they are almost always not as they seem.
What goes up must go down The property market by its very nature is cyclical – generally fluctuating over a seven-to-ten-year period. The four components are boom, bust, bottoming and recovery. However, there’s no need to panic – these aren’t as extreme as they sound. It is actually imperative these things happen to balance out the market when prices are too inflated. A correction is not a crash.

“As an entrepreneur what could be more exciting than a start-up business in a formerly illicit industry where you get to make a demonstrably and measurably positive impact on people’s lives.” – Mark Mees, CEO, SETEK Therapeutics

egalising cannabis production has always been a contentious issue. A plant that has been prohibited and scrutinised, branded with a biased public perception and a lack of understanding of its real advantages – medicinal benefits. But is it possible to achieve this ethically? Yes, says SETEK Therapeutics, Taupō-based medicinal cannabis producer – and the only New Zealand company that has ruled out any involvement in the production of flower or ‘loose leaf’ for smoking. SETEK Therapeutics emerged in late 2017 as a business collaboration between Mark Mees and chief operating officer, David Pearce. “From the outset, our vision was to become New Zealand’s lowest cost-

provider of pharmaceutical grade, 100% NZ certified organic cannabisbased medicines,” says Mark.
Following a rigorous process to obtain the license, SETEK are currently in their research phase, developing and stabilising the genetics to be grown, alongside commencing the design of their new, state-of-the-art good manufacturing practice (GMP) medical cannabis facility. With the facility expected to be complete by August 2020, the team are on track for a product launch in late 2020. Treatment areas include intractable pain, depression, anxiety, as well as specific illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and several spasticity disorders.
Why Taupō? Along with its central location providing an ideal logistics and distribution hub in New Zealand, it also aligns perfectly with SETEK’s social responsibility goals and is key to their international branding strategy. “Keeping it local also aligns with local Iwi / Hapu aspirations for the return of tangata whenua to their ancestral lands. If you are going to do that you need a model that includes the creation of sustainable jobs,” explains David. “There are also several factors unique to our location which will help SETEK to achieve its goal of becoming Oceania’s – and one of the world’s – first net-carbonneutral indoor cannabis companies.” A Taupō base also means the creation of over 100 jobs locally, potentially increasing to 250 or more as new opportunities in the natural health and nutraceutical markets open up.

roject your winter energy into crafting a DIY projector! Perfect for video watching during the school holidays and those wet weather weekends that seem to last forever.
You will need: •• A magnifying glass •• A sheet of thin black foam board •• Glue gun •• Craft glue •• Shoebox •• Smart phone •• Stanley knife / craft knife •• Hack saw •• Rule •• Double-sided tape
Step 1: Cut the handle off the magnifying glass. This will be your projector’s lens. Step 2: Next take your shoebox – lid removed – and reinforce all the inside edges and corners with your craft glue. Make sure it’s especially sturdy and strong at the ends. Step 3: After the glue has dried, turn your shoebox up on one end and trace a circle around your magnifying glass at the other end – this will be your lens end. Step 4: Use your Stanley knife or craft knife to cut around the cardboard circle. Once cut, the cardboard should pop out and your magnifying lens should fit nicely in the hole. Step 5: Use hot glue to mount the magnifying lens to your cardboard – so it remains in place and doesn’t drop out. Step 6: Then take the shoebox lid and using your cardboard circle cut-out, trace part of the circle onto the lid and remove. When you put the lid on, your lid will fit snugly around your lens – not over it.
Step 8: For the base of the phone stand, cut another piece of foam board, hot glue it to the other board so that both form a ‘T’ shape – bottom base and vertical centre. Make sure boards are glued perpendicularly to avoid image distortions when the phone is playing. Step 9: Next, stick two pieces of double-sided tape to your smartphone and mount it centre of your vertical board piece, so your phone aligns itself with the lens of the projector. Step 10: Now you need to set your phone to the highest, brightest setting and lock your screen so that when you play a video the screen stays upside down. The lens will invert the image on the wall the right way around – voila! Step 11: The last step is focusing your projector. Place your shoebox projector on a table or cabinet facing the wall or screen you’ll be projecting onto. To gain image focus, move your phone and stand backwards and forwards inside the box. You’ll be able to see where the best position is in the box judging by how clear the image appears on the wall. Step 12: You are done! Grab a friend or two and settle into your couch for an afternoon of movie watching!
Step 7: Now make the phone stand to sit inside your projector. Taking your foam board, cut a piece to fit perfectly inside your box – box width and height. 31

low carb Way The
Deepika Sulekh

t’s not just another diet. The low-carb, healthy fat way (LC/HF) is fast becoming a lifestyle choice, and as discovered by Taupō General Practitioner Dr Glen Davies, it’s also serving up a fresher perspective – and results – for diabetes treatment. Glen’s interest in the low-carb approach piqued 18 months ago, following a health turnaround in the community of Waitahanui, and after witnessing a patient solve his own health conditions. While there are mixed views on the low-carb and 'keto' lifestyles, his findings and further research by his colleagues uncovered several insights. These included traditional nutritional guidelines falling short, new ways of accessing stored fat, and a link to the carnivore connection hypothesis.
“During the caveman era, humans typically ate a low-carb diet full of meat and vegetables, and no processed food. By going back to that approach, we saw a reversal in diabetes and obesity,” he explains.
How does it work? “By consuming less carbohydrates and more healthy fats, you minimise your intake of sugar and starches, which stabilises your blood sugar and insulin levels, allowing you to access stored fats and make fat burning easier,” explains Glen. Now advocating the low-carb, healthy fat way of eating, Glen sees the biggest challenge as reversing everything we’ve been taught about nutrition. But a growing local following has people talking, trying
it out, and seeing results – with the community of Waitahanui leading the way. “What makes this unique is that it’s a first real community-based intervention of its kind.” And Glen’s ultimate vision? “To see Taupō as a diabetes and obesity-free region. I see the first successes as getting people talking – taking an interest, starting conversation around diet. Even mindfulness in health choices would make a huge difference.”
The results? Since Dr Glen Davies began advocating this new lifestyle, 31 patients have reversed type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, and 100 patients are seeing an average weight loss of 1.2kg per week (across three months). “Not only does this way of eating help lose weight, patients have seen improvement in sleep, arthritis, cancer and acne,” he says. With just a lifestyle change, he rarely needs to prescribe insulin or other medication because the diet now keeps it under control.
Interested? You can learn more about the LC/HF lifestyle at one of Glen’s weekly community meetings every Wednesday at 5.30pm – check out the Reverse T2 Diabetes Taupo page on Facebook for the updated venue.

Slow Cooker
Barbacoa Beef G
ood things take time – just like this delicious slow cooked barbacoa beef – but that doesn’t mean it’s all hard work. This recipe is so simple yet it produces amazing flavours; transforming beef into a juicy and tender dish which is nothing short of perfection.
Serves: 8 Prep time: 10 minutes
Ingredients » 4 lbs (1.8kg) beef brisket (or beef chuck roast will also work) » 2 tbsp vegetable oil » 3 to 4 chipotle chilis in adobo seasoning » 1¼ cups beef broth » 4 tsp minced garlic » 1½ tbsp ground cumin » 1 tbsp dried Mexican oregano » ¾ tsp salt, then more to taste » ½ tsp ground black pepper » ¼ tsp ground cloves » ¼ cup fresh lime juice
Method Cut the beef into large cubes. In a large skillet add the vegetable oil and sear the beef on each side over a medium/high heat. Transfer to your slow cooker. In a food processor place adobo chilis, beef broth, garlic, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, cloves, and lime juice. Pulse until blended and pour on top of the meat. Cook on low for 8 to 9 hours or on high for 6 hours. Shred the meat with two forks and turn onto warm setting. Enjoy!
Serving suggestion: Fill tortillas with beef and salad
Variations: For a gluten free option, use Tio Pablo Corn Tortillas.

One Kiwi and his quest for greater mental awareness
T
here’s no need to roll out the red carpet when you cross paths with Jimi Hunt. What you instantly learn about this Wellington-born inspirational speaker, mental fitness advocate and Live More Awesome charity founder, is that he’s happy to talk anytime, to anyone. It doesn’t matter where you are or where he is. Sometimes he’ll be in Mexico, en route from Melbourne to Sydney, heading home to Tauranga or dashing
down the Guinness World Record World’s Longest Waterslide – his invention. “Connecting with people is my game first and foremost. You have to reach out to everyone – everywhere – if you really want to change conversations around mental health,” he explains.
Rewiring an old train of thought Injecting a fresh wave of mental fitness thinking across multiple generations is no easy feat, but Jimi is committed. Reaching out to individuals, businesses and organisations around the globe. “Mental fitness isn’t about illness. Everyone stands to benefit from being mentally fitter.”
The ‘fitness’ concept is easy to grasp, he says. “You exercise at the gym because you want to feel better. It’s the same with mental fitness – it has roll-on benefits. You have better relationships, perform better at work and generally achieve more.” he explains. “It’s about taking radical ownership of your mental fitness and looking after it.”
Flicking the switch Making the choice to tap into your mental wellness – or ‘flicking the switch’ – is the first step – and is different for everyone. “Some people have this ‘ah-ha’ moment, for others it’s a progressive realisation. I want people to make this switch before they hit rock bottom. Baring your soul Sharing his own story – honestly and vulnerably – has enabled him to forge deeper connections with his audience. “A man approached me recently after one of my talks. He was around 55, fully tattooed and an ex-gang member. He cried on my shoulder because I’d helped him realise that he had mental fitness and it was his responsibility to make it better. keep on growing Don’t give your vege patch the cold shoulder this season Winter has ascended, so leave beach going to the brave and head down the garden path. It’s never too late to condition your soil and plant a crop to take you from now into summer. Kath Irvine of New Zealand’s Edible Backyard and permaculture designer, shares her planting and care tips for greater growing in winter – and beyond.
What can we grow in winter, to eat in winter and take us into spring? If you want a gift that keeps on giving – or dishing – dine out on perennials. “Perennials live on indefinitely in your garden. They require very little ongoing care – a huge bonus in winter – and can be planted as and when.” explains Kath. “In New Zealand the likes of perpetual spinach, perennial leeks, asparagus, rhubarb and nine-star broccoli grow well yearround, and are all great to add to winter recipes – stews, crumbles and casseroles.”
Dee Ellwood
Seasonal winter veges to pop in the ground as soon as possible, include: “The Brassicas family – cauli, broccoli, cabbage – love a cool growing season, and ideally should be planted in late summer or early autumn for winter crops,” she explains. “In terms of garden to table it really is a timing thing, for lettuce and kale it’s roughly six weeks of growing, globe cabbages and brussels sprouts from three months onwards, garlic closer to six months.”
For those of us who forgot to prep our soil for autumn or winter planting. Can we still plant in June? “In the cold growth slows right down which is why winter plantings take a long time to mature, but it’s still worth planting out broccoli or cabbage – they’ll mature by spring,” she explains. “Kale, bok choy,
spinach, peas, broad beans, miners lettuce and corn salad prefer the cold, so sow away.” To condition your soil, simply spread a layer of compost, plant seedlings out and mulch. “The best mulch is a mixture of what you have access to. Things like leaves, soft prunings from flowers and herbs, grass clippings, coffee grounds,” says Kath. “Liquid feed with seaweed every week until they get going. When they reach 30cm dollop rotten manure around them.” As for winter salad companions – coriander, rocket, calendula – plant them in a container and keep them in a warm spot.
Frost protection and watering in winter? If a cold snap is on the cards, cover young seedlings with a frost cloth or fleece, says Kath.
“Plants don’t need daily watering when it’s cold. If you’ve got good soil and mulch, you’ll be amazed how long your soil will hold the moisture.” 40

enting out an investment property can be hard work. Difficulties around securing the right tenants, managing inspections, communication and finances, are just a few of the issues you can be faced with. Staying on track – and reducing the stress – is dependent on how successfully a property’s managed. So, here are our top five tips for keeping your finger on the pulse:
1. Advertise appropriately

important. Don’t rush into the first applicant that looks good, you don’t know what’s hiding in the closet.
3. Create a thorough tenancy agreement Ensure all the legal requirements are included, such as insulation, heating, vehicles, Healthy Homes Act, inspections, etc. The more detailed the agreement, the easier it is to remedy through court if anything goes wrong.
4. Always keep on top of minor repairs Be available if your tenant wants to contact you in case of repairs or hazards. Keeping on top ensures better condition of your property long term.
5. Keep your rent value current If you have a good tenant, don’t reward them by leaving the rent value unchanged for years. Instead, give a rent vacation at Christmas or even gifts. This way the investment returns stay current and you have loyal tenants.

Taking Stock of Your Skin This Season Dee Ellwood
A
h winter. There’s no better time to curb the gym, embrace the carbs and shelve skin and body must-dos. Right? Wrong say skin experts. Addressing your skin when seasons change is key – the cooler months are no exception. So, make it your winter to turn the tables on skin sins and push play to tackle dryness, to book in those cosmetic treatments, target your acne woes and map out your moles. As Erno Laszo, renowned Hungarian-born dermatologist, said, “Beautiful skin requires a commitment, not a miracle.”
Must add moisture As the weather cools, there’s less moisture in the air and our skin’s natural barrier is compromised, resulting in dry, acne prone skin which is less able to fight off infections and bacteria. “Skin dehydrates in winter, in places like Taupō you battle a semi-Alpine climate and in the Bay of Plenty you’ve got the cool coupled with exposed coastal factors,” says Krystie Marriott of Taupō’s Skin Sanctuary. “Before you go piling on your serums and oils, build up the hydration in your skin – namely with active hyaluronic acid. This could be a hydrating booster or an overnight mask.” With hydration boosted, it’s time to apply those active ingredients to aid with restoration and preservation. “Vitamins A, B and C are all necessary for repair and prevention. In winter you may also require a heavier moisturiser to lock in that hydration too.”

Well spotted Dermatosis conditions of the skin – rosacea, eczema, psoriasis – can worsen when the cool sets in, which is why seeking solutions – beyond antibiotics – that actively work is essential to minimise pain and discomfort. “The supermarket shelf doesn’t always fair well – dishing up solutions that are often ineffective long-term,” explains Dr Amy Stanway, renowned Bay of Plenty dermatologist. “A dermatologist will look at a face and immediately recognise if the skin is inflammatory or the noninflammatory type – something many of us can’t tell.” So, what are few acne treatment options a dermatologist might recommend? “Topical retinoids – derived from Vitamin A, these unclog and regenerate skin cells faster,” says Amy. “Also Niacinamide – a topical B Vitamin – which has hit headlines of late as it decreases inflammation and improves skin texture.”
on any part of the body, so a skin specialist examines all those hidden areas too.”
Enhance me According to 2019’s global ‘tweakment’ trend, less really is more when it comes to cosmetic surgery, as many of us seek to ditch the filtered photo look and channel au naturel. So, if enhancing or redefining your features has been on the cards but you’re not wanting a full facelift, turning to non-surgical procedures to smooth may be just the ticket, says Dianna Morgan of New Zealand’s Cosmetic Solutions.

Dianna – who alternates her business between Diamond Laser Medispa in Taupō and Auckland – says it's not a matter of eradicating but redefining.
Winter is a good time to look in to your mole situation, says Amy. “All Kiwis should have a yearly skin map – ideally before heading out in togs and jandals again. It’s not just about reducing our exposure; it’s about targeting the damage earlier for a better outcome.
“When it comes to your face, it’s not about filling in the gaps. Accurate use of fillers softens lines and defines to restore a more youthful and natural look. Today’s fillers are created using hyaluronan which is naturally present in our skin, so the process is less invasive and results last longer,” explains Dianna. “With Botox it’s less about subtracting years and more about harmonising features.”
“Research tells us that sunburn in young adulthood leads to a greater likelihood of developing skin cancer. For example, a study lead by the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University reported at least five blistering sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 were 80% more likely to develop melanoma,” she says. “Skin cancers can present
Additionally, Botox has been shown to improve skins elasticity. A study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery demonstrated Botox can improve the elasticity and pliability of skin for up to four months, and temporarily reverse the damage to skin elasticity caused by Ultraviolet radiation for approximately four months.

as ageing, pollution, unhealthy diets or hormonal imbalances taken a toll on your skin? Don’t know what to do about those acne scars, large pores, fine lines and wrinkles?
Before the treatment, your clinician analyses your skin under the Observ Skin Diagnostic Device, looking beneath your skin, identifying problem areas and the right solution for you.
Well, Diamond Laser Medispa has a solution for you. Now a popular anti-ageing treatment, Dermapen can give your skin the boost it needs with the trusted process of micro-needling. This revolutionary approach to anti-ageing stimulates the body’s own natural collagen repair to rejuvenate skin and improve the look of wrinkles, lines, stretch marks and sagging skin.
The treatment is essentially painless but may be uncomfortable. You’ll start seeing results after the first treatment, and your skin will continue to improve over the next 6 – 12 months after a course of treatments – and when combined with the recommended posttreatment care.
How does it work? Micro-needling uses fine needles to lightly puncture the skin’s top layer, creating microscopic wounds on the skin, which stimulates healing with the production of collagen and elastin.
UBER Peel Exclusively designed to enhance micro-needling procedures, the UBER Peel contains a specific blend of treatment actives, assisting with treating ageing signs, acne and hyper-pigmented conditions.
Time for better skin Book a Dermapen and Uber Peel treatment this June for half price at $205 (valued at $410) and a free consultation (valued at $50).

Spotlighting Local Insta Influencer
Niki Creasy I
nfluencers are big business. You’ll be hard pushed to scroll social media and not come across someone who has been ‘sponsored’ to promote a product or service to their fanbase. Mount Maunganuibased marketing account director, Niki Creasy, is one such ‘influencer’ – but her journey to the top wasn’t intentional. Niki’s Insta ball started rolling when she was training for a marathon. “I noticed my running posts on Instagram generated more engagement than other generic content, so I decided to have this as the core focus of my account – and it just grew from there,” she explains. Now, with close to 11,000 followers, Niki is classed as a ‘micro-influencer’ – an account with less than 30,000 – in a market as small as New Zealand, that is no easy feat. However, she
believes there’s no ‘sure fire’ way of securing influencer status. Some will follow a more strategic pathway – others not. “Some people sort of fall into it by accident – they just have a knack for posting engaging content, or they start a social media page to keep themselves accountable,” she says. “There are some who set up an account with the intent to become an influencer – they're creating and posting content specifically with follower growth in mind.”
Smart steps forward For Niki, having people connect with her and follow her running journey is the greatest influencer reward. “And those encouraging comments certainly came in handy when marathon training gets really
intense,” she says. “There is a downside to being ‘instafamous’ – you do receive nasty comments and abuse – but fortunately I’m relatively free from that kind of behaviour.” So, the question begs, does it pay well? In New Zealand the likelihood is that you’ll probably have to keep your fulltime job – or at least parttime – explains Niki. “There are some influencers who are able to make a living from their brand partnerships and promotions – but not all.” And, it pays to be selective about who you work with, she cautions. “Social media users are smart – they know when they're being told about or shown something that's not authentic – so I only share what I actually use / eat / do in my 'real life'.”
Niki’s tips for becoming an influencer 1. Post high-quality photos and videos 2. Write engaging captions 3. Use relevant hashtags 4. Know what’s trending online 5. Engage with your audience 6. Don’t just do it for followers – keep it real, find your niche and inject personality into your content
Being an influencer should have gains beyond dollar signs, says Niki, who is using her Instagram profile to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis and a life-saving medication that isn’t funded in New Zealand. “I’m passionate about this cause and I know my online platform is a great way to gain support for the ‘Kalydeco for Kiwis’ campaign. Being an influencer isn’t all about marketing for big business, but also for doing good.” Follow Niki on Instagram: @run_niki_run

itch the couch this winter in the name of cancer. June is our national Bowel Cancer Awareness month and Bowel Cancer NZ are asking all Kiwis to take part in its 2019 campaign – Move Your Butt. “Bowel cancer kills as many New Zealanders as breast and prostate cancer combined. In June alone, 250 will be diagnosed and 100 people will die from bowel cancer. It can affect anyone at any age,” says Mary Bradley, spokesperson for Bowel Cancer NZ. Getting involved in this year’s fundraising isn’t destined for just the athletes amongst us.

“It’s an opportunity for everyone to participate no matter your age or fitness level. Just as bowel cancer has no preference, our support has no bounds,” she explains. “Sign yourself up, get sponsored and set yourself a fitness challenge. For example, going for a walk each day, doing 20 press ups or bike riding.” Or, if you’re a busy mum on the go like bowel cancer survivor Toni Hamill of Rotorua, committing to 300 crunches a week – knocking them out when the kids go to bed – could be a good option. “For me, running a marathon isn’t on the cards this year, but I want to show my support – bowel cancer doesn’t pick and choose.” To show your support for bowel cancer this June or to sign up for the Move Your Butt challenge, head to bowelcancernz.org.nz/move-your-butt and connect at #moveyourbuttnz.

Toni’s story is the antithesis of bowel cancer’s unpredictable reach. At just 35, she underwent surgery to remove 30 cm of her bowel and 11 lymph nodes – just nine weeks after giving birth. With no family history, a lifetime of healthy eating and exercise, her diagnosis was hard hitting but the guessing ended. “I spent two years experiencing symptoms that doctors wrote off as being something else – and they got progressively worse. For me, I couldn’t rest. I knew there was something more going on than just IBS or haemorrhoids.” If it doesn’t feel normal, don’t normalise it, is the key takeaway Toni took from her own bowel cancer experience. Now two years clear of the disease, she believes her practical attitude and ‘don’t assume’ mindset saved her.
“No one in my family – bar my great grandfather – has or had the disease. I’ve always been into my body balance and yoga. I’m not a textbook case, but I knew my body best. I didn’t settle.” To learn more about Toni’s story head to moveyourbutt2019.everydayhero.com/ nz/crunches-for-bowel-cancer

Kiwis Riding a Brew-tique Wave of Thinking R
egardless of season or celebration, taking closer inspection of our food and drink is a trend that continues to command our attention. And, here in New Zealand, our desire to know more about a beverage’s origins, its heritage, its ingredients and the thought-process behind its creation, means we’re reaching out to drinks that deliver an innovative twist, weave a good story and don’t leave a bitter taste in our mouths.
Nowadays, don’t think quantity, think quality beverages brewed for a modern world, says Jason Anderson, brand director of Premium Liquor and Sundown Gin.
want something more sophisticated, interesting, something that ticks more than one box – natural ingredients, locally made, reduced sugar, a good story behind it.”
Authenticity trumps
If the demand's there, it’s there for a reason, says Jason.
“Fifteen years ago, it was the same regional beers lining the shelf. Today, the craft offerings are ample – beer, wine, spirits – you name it,” he says. “It’s not just about ‘convenience’ as you grab and run, consumers

“With our Sundown Gin premixes, we saw a gap in the market to reinvent the ‘premix’ mentality of old – lolly drinks,” he explains. “Why can’t you pick up a gin premixer that is 100% natural, reduced sugar and made locally? We’re taking greater pride in what we’re bringing and sharing – we see greater support for this coming from our millennial generation too, not just the oldies.” Darrel Hadley, co-founder of Good George Brewing, agrees. “Authenticity is what’s really driving this demand for craft brews. People are seeking out the new, they’re seeking ‘real’ flavours and a good back story to the brew too,” he

And at the end of the day, many of us are now hunting an ‘experience’ when reaching for a beverage, and craft brews meet that mission, says Jason. “New is the new. Drinking levels are driving down and simultaneously we’re starting to come out of our shells – we want to try something different,” he explains. “And, there is such a saturation in the market of these craft brewers meeting that demand – people are working hard to stand out.”
Local stance
says. “And the millennial generation really resonate with craft brews – they want brands that care about the environment – they want ‘real’.”
Experience driven Good George began quietly humming away in the back streets of Hamilton six years ago – provincial pride and authenticity driving its production line. And despite its steady rise in popularity nationwide – and globally – not to mention brew bars and restaurants in the greater Bay of Plenty and Waikato districts, the company refuses to rest on its laurels. And, for good reason, says Darrel. “We see ourselves as more of an experience than a product. In the craft brew market, you have to keep innovating – Good George released 28 new beverages last year – because you want your regular customers to have new experiences and you want to appeal to new faces. And it’s important to maintain that quality – for us, we’re committed to keeping it local and brewing from scratch.”
It’s not just Kiwi consumers that are donning the ‘drinks proud’ badge and keeping up with the new kids on the block, the brewers themselves are wearing their creative hats 24/7. “Craft brewers are naturally creative and intrinsically customer driven on more than one level. Many of us are fierce locals and advocates for good ole fashioned communication,” explains Darrel. “Alongside overseas trend research, craft brewers get close to their customers. They talk, question and ask around – ‘Is this good? What would you change? Suggestions?’” And social media is no foe of the craft brew movement. “We use social media to run informal polls – for example, cider flavours,” says Darrel. “When you’re smaller you can create closer relationships with your customers. We can get to know the people not just the purchaser.”
GOOD BEER, GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD CHEER. Good Eastern Taphouse is the place to be - get together for an enjoyable time and share plates over a great range of beer, ciders and wines.
Jason agrees. “We all want to feel like we’re playing a part in supporting local – it’s a proud moment when you pick up something off the shelf and you see it’s made in your town,” he says. “Feels good, tastes good – it’s a win-win.”

The Content Marketing Matrix S
tuck in a content marketing maze? Not sure on the ‘how’ when it comes to reaching customers and promoting your products/services effectively and through the right channels? Tried and tested, the Content Marketing Matrix isn’t a new idea, but remains a reliable tool to help direct your content marketing actions. Great marketing starts with great content, and great content needs purpose, direction and goals. The matrix is a framework to help direct your marketing based on your specific content goals, whether you want/need to entertain, inspire, educate or convince your audience. It’s a tool that guides customers along their path to purchase in the most direct and effective way.
How do you use it? It’s simple. Think about whether your product, service or marketing initiative is based on a rational or emotional spend. Now think about what you want your customers to achieve from the content you’re producing. Do you want to generate awareness of something new? Lead them to purchase a product? Or share useful information? Based on the corner of the matrix you think your answers are heading, it gives you ideas on the types of content marketing you should be using. You can also use it in content planning and ensure it caters for a wide variety of interests. 52
