Turning Up the Heat

I

t’s that time of year when we start flocking to the lake’s edge, thinking about our summer plans and counting down to a well-earned break over the festive season.

We invite you to indulge in New Zealand dishes and Mediterranean influenced menus in a classy but casual atmosphere. Grab a whiskey, craft beer or wine from our full bar, then choose fireplace, table or booth setting. Enjoy from an extensive range of tapas, shared plates or à-la-carte options. With the longer days arriving, our wind-sheltered Alfresco dining area on the sunny side of the street is the perfect place to spend a Spring evening.

Open 7 days from 11 am

As always, there’s lots on offer across our district over the summer months, so grab your jandals from the back of the cupboard and get ready for a great few months. Whether you’re out on the lake, enjoying our boutique shops, exploring the mountain-biking and walking trails, playing a round of golf or grabbing a drink or bite to eat, there really is something for everyone here. On top of that, we’ve got a jam-packed summer of family-friendly events to choose from, with the annual IRONMAN 70.3 Taupō kicking things off in December. Take your pick of concerts, community, arts and crafts and other sporting events across the district too, with Turangi, Kinloch and Mangakino all in on the action. And, what better way to ring in the New Year than heading down to the lakefront to watch the fireworks? Whether you’re a local or just visiting, the easiest way to plan your adventures each day and see what we have to offer, is to visit lovetaupo.com. Of course, it goes without saying, that if you are spending time on the water, please be mindful of others and ensure you and anyone around you is safe at all times. And please remember to travel safe on our roads over the busy holiday season. I look forward to seeing you all out there this summer!

I

am proud to have been elected as Mayor of Tauranga City Council and thank the people of our great city for placing their trust in me. Tauranga voted resoundingly for change, with six new faces out of eleven at the council table. I am excited about working with my fellow council elected members to deliver the strong and decisive leadership our city deserves.

Like many of you, I think it is important that we repair the Mauao base track and make the track accessible to all as soon as possible. From the week after election, CE Marty Grenfell and I, along with staff, have been meeting with the Mauao Trust Board and other stakeholders to discuss how we can make this happen quickly and economically, so that everyone can enjoy our beautiful maunga. We are also committed to working with mana whenua to protect this environment for the future. Tauranga is shaping up for a hot, busy summer, with lots of exciting events in store for locals and visitors’ entertainment. A special thank you to our Surf Life Saving Clubs, whose members work tirelessly to keep our beaches safe during this busy period.

The Bucket List

Discover Mine Bay’s Māori Rock Carvings W So naturally one of the first things that captured my interest about the lake was the Māori rock carvings – not only one of Taupō’s most popular tourist attraction, but also the most photographed – making it to the top of my Taupō bucket list. Hidden on an alcove in Mine Bay, the carvings tower 14 metres above water and feature a strong cultural history in the most unique way.

Māori legends brought to life One of New Zealand’s most spectacular cultural attractions, these works of art were created in the late 1970s by marae-taught carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, alongside a team of four artists – Jono Randell, Te Miringa Hohaia, Dave Hegglun and Steve Myhre. The main carving takes the face of Matahi’s ancestor, Ngātoroirangi, the visionary Māori navigator who guided the Tūwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to Taupō 1,000 years ago. Each part of the artwork carries its own story and meaning, with the smaller carvings portraying tupuna

(ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians) of the local Māori tribe.

How do you get there? The carvings are only visible from the water, but there are plenty of ways to make your way out to see them. Scenic cruises let you kick back and relax as you explore the remarkable coastline of the lake and take in the stunning scenery, while listening to the stories and legends about Taupō’s local history and culture. Or, you can gather your crew and take a private boat charter, while enjoying the sightseeing, swimming, fishing and more at your own pace. If you’re in for a bit of adventure, then kayaking will get you right up close to the native bush, steep cliffs and inlets on the way – not to mention the closest you can get to the carvings too.

Ma-ori rock carvings, Taupo Experience the beauty of a scenic tour to the famous Ma-ori Rock Carvings on the iconic sailing boat Fearless.

Either way, you’re in for an amazing experience. I know because by now I’ve been to visit by kayak, private boat and cruises, each of them unique and exciting in their own ways. Don’t forget to charge your camera before you go and have a cold beer in the fridge for your return.

hen I moved to Taupō, everything about the lake was fascinating to me – the pristine water, the unseen bays, hidden bush, and just the overall freshness of it all. It was completely different to the sandy beaches I was used to.

Cool Down This Summer on Mt Ruapehu   Advertorial

Summer is heating up in Taupō but there is a new way to cool down this season. The new Sky Waka gondola at Whakapapa is open year-round for an alpine experience on Mt Ruapehu. Located only 1.5 hours from Taupō, the Sky Waka is open daily between 9.30am and 5.30pm for gondola rides, dining, sightseeing and hiking experiences.

14

ADRENALINE Go for snow

Activities galore

If you’re visiting early in summer, there will still be snow at the top of the Sky Waka so now is the time to give it a go if you haven’t yet had a snow experience. There is a new upper mountain sledding zone open in front of the Knoll Ridge Chalet and at 2,000 metres above sea level, it’s likely to last until at least Christmas, great fun for the kids – big and small!

The Sky Waka also gives you access to some incredible short walks on Mt Ruapehu – one of our favourites is the walk up to Skyline Ridge. It’s a fairly short walk with big rewards. A 1.5 to 2 hour round trip takes you to 2,300 metres above sea level.

New Zealand’s highest restaurant The Pinnacles Restaurant, with its spectacular views, opened in July this year at Knoll Ridge Chalet and will be open every day for lunch and afternoon tea, and Friday and Saturday nights for dinner. Pātaka is also open every day for coffee and light bites.

From this altitude, the views are awesome, you can see across Tongariro National Park, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Tongariro and Lake Taupō. There is a courtesy mark trail starting from the top of the chairlifts by the Knoll Ridge Chalet at 2,020 metres, this travels through old lava flows and loose ash, but it is not a benched track.

And no matter the season, always keep an eye on weather conditions and make sure you are prepared for alpine conditions as weather can change suddenly on Mt Ruapehu.

Buried but Never Forgotten

Day tripping to Te Wairoa ‘Buried Village’ and Waimangu Volcanic Valley   Dee Ellwood

Y

ou don’t have to travel far to stand amidst a buried village or a wonder of the world. Just a hop, skip and jump from Taupō or Tauranga, both Waimangu Valley – home to the famous pink and white terraces, situated on Lake Rotomahana – and the Buried Village, on the edge of Lake Tarawera, are within easy driving distance. And, both are hallmarks of the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption, which obliterated villages and changed landscapes and lives forever.

Alive and kicking “The valley didn't exist until the eruption that buried the terraces, making it the youngest geothermal system in the world,” explains Tom Worsp of Destination Rotorua. “It’s constantly changing which makes it a truly unique place to experience.” The birthplace of tourism in New Zealand, hundreds would travel to marvel and swim in the healing

waters of the terraces. Today they are abuzz with a different sort of activity. “Cornel de Ronde of GNS Science plans to send a manned submersible below the surface of Lake Rotomahana in the near future – so it’s keeping interest piqued. People are excited to visit an area where history’s still unfolding before our eyes.” And such beauty there is to behold above ground too. On any given day, visitors play witness to Frying Pan Lake – one of the largest hot water springs in the world – this inferno crater lake rises and falls as it heats and cools. Alongside, delicate sinter terraces grow from the deposits of the hot spring water. Patterning the way, are rare and unusual plants which have adapted to grow on the hot earths of Waimangu, and all sitting amongst regenerating native forests.

Up close and personal When visiting the village – or the valley – it’s the feeling of ‘real’ that echoes from every nook and cranny. A walk through Te Wairoa Village’s 12 acre archaeological site – with excavated ruins and reconstructed

Waimangu in focus • Waimangu is the world’s youngest geothermal valley. • Exploration is not limited and there are plenty of ways to tour Waimangu – self-guided and guided – think nature walks, hikes, and lake cruises, interpretive signage, technology and map guides. • The valley is home to 22 crater lakes. • The most famous ‘must do’ is a visit to Frying Pan Lake.

20

Te Wairoa quick fire ... • Te Wairoa Village was established in 1848 by Reverend Spencer. Photographs and its archaeological footprint suggest it was a combination of traditional Maori and English settlements. • The village is buried under approximately four feet of mud and ash, an estimated 153 people lost their lives. • Te Wairoa’s Maori Meeting House, Hinemihi – or ‘the house with the golden eyes’ – which stood firm in hardened mud, was sold in 1892 and shipped to England where its final resting home is now Clandon Park, Surrey. • The village is owned and operated by the third generation of the Smith family who bought the property in 1931.

sites – is surreal and breath-taking, you see and feel first-hand the catastrophic effects of natural disaster. And the unknown has a place too, reminds Tom. “For me, there will always be intrigue around the Mount Tarawera eruption and adding to this is the story of the phantom waka that was seen on Lake Tarawera just days before the eruption,” he says. “There’re certain journeys and places you just need to experience in person to truly understand what once was.”

Tour your way Thanks to specially developed augmented reality apps and multimedia tour guides – one launched by Waimangu Volcanic Valley, and Te Wairoa’s Mozivision – visitors to the valley and village can now tailor their choice of touring and venturing even more. “You can see the lay of the land as it was and the pink and white terraces below the surface of the water,” says Tom. “And Mozivision personally guides you through the excavated sites – no guesswork involved.”

No Man’s Land to Hillside Sanctuary The Crusaders Behind Te Puna Quarry Park

  Dee Ellwood

L

ike something out of a storybook – ‘desolate wasteland turned magical garden’ – 23 years ago Tauranga locals opened pathways for one of the region’s most renowned parks, Te Puna Quarry Park. However, unlike fairy-tale scripture, the journey from nothing to stunning, has been no easy feat. “We battled for three years to get the rights to turn the old quarry into a park – it was tough going,” explains Shirley Sparks, local heroine and Quarry Park founder. “We had to go through a myriad of hurdles but we stood firm with our vision. Today the council are thrilled – well they would be, wouldn’t they! We have converted 32 hectares into this incredible park for all to visit and explore, and at no cost to them!”

Watch it grow Spread across an entire hillside, the majority of the gardens and walkways encompass approximately one third of the park, “The rest we have converted to native bush which we continue to cut walking tracks into,” explains chief gardener and Quarry Park co-founder, Jo Dawkins. Meandering pathways lead to various garden pockets: the orchids, to cactus’, butterfly sanctuary, magnolia glen, nikau and tropicals,

maple grove, to name a few – and all with panoramic Bay of Plenty views. “When we first began planting, we had no real idea of just how far up the quarry we’d go. Then, one day I drew a line in the hillside and said, ‘No further’, well then of course we started to spread around and further down from that point,” chuckles Jo. “We said this’ll be a 100 year project, but it’s really a forever project.”

Action packed And with a strong team of 35 volunteers meeting every Tuesday – and a smaller crew on a Thursday – to dig, plant, weed and transport, the Quarry Park is very much alive with energy.

“It’s a happy place – there’s no crying allowed here,” says Jo. “Most of us volunteers are well into our 70s and 80s, it’s truly magic to be a part of – it keeps us active!” Quarry Park secretary, Dulcie Artus agrees. “Seeing your ideas take shape is so rewarding. Our new amphitheatre will be completed this month – just in time for Outdoor Carols by Candlelight and Twilight Concerts.” The Te Puna Quarry Park is open year-round, rain, hail or sunshine – gates close at dusk – situated on 110 Quarry Road, Te Puna, Tauranga. There is no cost to visit, picnic and explore, however donations are appreciated.

To learn more about the great work of the Quarry crusaders and what’s happening in and around the park, visit www.quarrypark.org.nz

QE Health: A New Era of

mind

F

amed as a pioneer in holistic health and wellness, QE Health is renowned for its comprehensive wellness facilities and team with unparalleled skill and depth of knowledge. Inaugurated over 75 years ago, QE Health has become an iconic wellness brand with a huge range of medical and wellbeing services.

body

“Focusing on your holistic health means uniting complete health of the mind, body and spirit,” says Elisabeth Jackson, deputy CEO at QE Health. “Wellness and healthcare shouldn’t come in a one-size-fits-all approach, each client needs a distinct focus with the outcome being customised,” explains Elisabeth. QE Health is a wellness centre, specialising in various rehabilitation therapy, therapeutic spa treatments, and in-patient programmes right through to a full-care package, making QE Health a unique facility within New Zealand. “Our clinicians ensure every client receives exactly what your mind,

spirit 24

wellness body and spirit needs, and with all the different departments under one roof, clients have access to everything from psychology to the gym.” QE healthcare offerings are extensive, including: physiotherapy, psychology, orthotics, dietetics, occupational therapy, rheumatology, appearance medicine, wellness for cancer, massages and gym.

“Although we will be offering different products these will be complementary, allowing the overall site to be promoted as a health and wellness precinct, offering services ranging from luxury spa through to clinical rehabilitation,” explains David Tapsell, Pukeroa deputy chairman. “Given the geothermal features of the site and the Te Arawa cultural overlay that will be applied, this will be a unique offering that will be great for the city.” The completion of QE Health’s new build and opening of the new premises is expected to be completed by mid to late 2021.

Bigger and better Beginning as a convalescent hospital in 1942, to the multi-disciplinary centre for wellness it is today, QE Health is in for an even brighter future with an upcoming new purpose-built facility at Pukeroa Lakefront Holdings’ new lakefront wellness campus in Rotorua. “The new building will offer a better client experience with high-tech equipment and innovative features while still respecting the iconic QE feel,” enthuses Elisabeth. The upgrade to the new facility will give QE Health the opportunity to grow their current programmes and services to better cater for a wider range of needs, affirming them as a recognised learning facility with a multi-disciplinary team. The new Pukeroa lakefront site will include the QE Health facility alongside Pukeroa’s proposed Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa development.

“With QEHs approximate 70 staff and the Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa proposing near the same for its facility, this is a significant boost for employment and the local and regional economy,” adds David.

Development funding The new build is a joint project between QE Hospital Community Trust and QE Health Limited and will remain a Community owned asset. Interested in being a potential funder in QE Health’s new facility? QE Health is actively working towards rising the funding needed to complete the build, however further support from the wider community is required. Get Your Sizzle on This Summer

emember those good ole Kiwi summer days? When time slowed, kids jumped off pontoons, and evening strolls were the norm – they still exist, and are within easy reach. The small township of Mangakino is home to such summertime days of old and host to one of the regions hottest lakefront events – The Waikato River Trails Summer Sizzler. And, with Christmas and New Year well and truly done and dusted, this family-friendly event – held 11th January – provides the perfect opportunity to get out and about and explore an area of the Waikato that remains a well-kept secret. “The event finishes at Mangakino’s lakefront reserve which is both picturesque and ideal for families – albeit it is one of the least known holiday spots. We have the famous

Bus Stop café, pontoon, golf course alongside and plenty of boat and people watching to be had,” explains Glyn Wooller of Waikato River Trails. “The river trail spans 105 kilometres – stretching from Arapuni, Mangakino, Whakamaru and the recently completed stretch to Atiamuri – and its infrastructure brings such a wealth of opportunities with it. Great for out-of-town exploration and fantastic for the growth of our local communities.”

A place to just be A long-time go-to for wakeboard aficionados and trout enthusiasts, Mangakino’s Lake Maraetai, proved the perfect backdrop for 2019’s Summer Sizzler which welcomed participants from Hamilton, Tauranga, Auckland and locals alike. “This year’s event really showcased the true beauty and magic of the area – and its local community – plus the weather was incredible. Mangakino is really just a place to be and go at your own pace and travelling time is at a minimum – it’s a stone’s throw from Taupō and just over an hour from Tauranga.” With first year success well and truly earnt, 2020’s Summer Sizzler is set to be equally as smashing. “We want to introduce people to this amazing part of the map – get them

exploring the river trail – and what better way to spark interest than with a fun-filled, affordable day,” says Glyn. “For us it’s not about making huge amounts of profit – we keep entrance fees to a minimum – it’s about giving back to our communities and supporting them.” And one such group of avid supporters are local sports groups who’ll be marshalling the event. “We have such a great crew of people bringing the event to life – and profits go back into supporting these local groups – which makes it all the more rewarding as organisers,” enthuses Glyn. “And because we’ve kept it affordable but maintained a high level of service and reward – all competitor photography is free; all competitors receive bibs (some personalised if they enter early) and everyone receives a medal too – it truly makes it a special event to be a part of.” To enter and learn more about January 2020’s Waikato River Trails Summer Sizzler event, visit wrtsummersizzler.com.

hether you’re a keen mountain biker, city commuter or Sunday cycleway cruiser, there’s no playing favourites in the world of ebikes. In fact, when it comes to electric power, it’s not just about speed and convenience – the ebike experience extends well beyond the basics. And, the only way to really get a feel for one, is to ride one, says Joe Lindsay, co-director of Electric Bike Rotorua and Mohawk Ebike Tours.

Breaking down the barriers “I think apprehension is the biggest thing holding people back – but our advice is to just get out and give one a go. Age is no barrier – nor experience – there is an ebike for everyone – not just your adventure riders, rail trailers and city commuters, there are electric trikes, folding bikes to zip through little trails, the range is huge,” explains Joe. “What many people don’t realise is just because a bike is built one way, it doesn’t mean it has to be used just that way. The big thing we do here is customise bikes to fit the person, so you actually get the rider on the best possible bike that suits them and then customise it to suit their needs.”

Add Some Spark to Your Spin Why Ebikes Are Fast Becoming the Everyman’s Bike   Dee Ellwood

For example, if ease of mount is a top priority, you could opt for a folding ebike with the addition of a mountain bike dropper post which allows you to hop on and off easier, or if you’re after a full suspension ebike to use as a commuter and off road machine, this might involve tuning the bike a certain way to make it more capable both on and off road.

United we ride “The big thing is versatility – ride what’s comfortable – because when the bike fits, doors open. Many riders, even advanced riders, find

they have so many options on an ebike. Whether that’s getting in a little more distance, or dad keeping up with his 20-year-old son out in the redwoods, or the whole family – kids of all ages – having the stamina to complete a ride together,” says Joe. Frankie Kebbell, co-director of Electric Bike Rotorua, agrees. “No one’s left behind. We had three generations in a family – a seven-year-old, a 40-year-old and a 90-year-old, all riding with us the other week,” she enthuses. “So, what’s happening isn’t just that people are getting out there and riding more, they’re riding with people they’ve never ridden with before.”

The places you’ll go And with newfound e-freedom comes the confidence to explore the new too. “Rotorua in itself offers a myriad of incredible biking trails – along rivers, redwoods, mountains and lakes – the options are seemingly endless,” explains Joe. “The great thing about taking an ebike up into redwoods with a tour group is that you can send the advanced riders down one trail and the beginners down another, and you can still end up in the same place – everyone is catered for.” 30

Going The Extra Mile

And for those of us who are keen on booking an ebike tour in the Rotorua region, locking in a Redwoods halfday tour is a sure-fire way of seeing some scenery and wearing the ebike smile, says Frankie. “A redwoods half-day is our most popular ebike tour with visitors, because it’s ample time to explore the woods, get a feel for the bike and pedal your way through a few trails,” she explains. And, all with the assurance of a bike well grounded, adds Joe. “The key feature of an ebike is its ability to keep you secure – it does have that centralised weight – it keeps you glued to the ground. So, in the case of a mountain ebike (EMTB), you’re going to trust it more when you’re leaning over. And, generally they’re spec’d with more travel, so they’ve got a bigger suspension on them which takes those bumps out.”

Bang for your bike And if fears of a large bump in the wallet are still holding back your ebike dream, that may not be the case. “There’s a misconception that ebikes are going to cost you an arm and a leg. The majority of our clients will only need a simple bike for the type of riding they are going to do. Fitting a bike to a rider’s needs is the single most important part of our service, and most of the time we end up setting up a bike for less than anticipated,” explains Joe. “The other thing to think about is the ongoing saving you may see. We sold a bike to a customer who uses her bike to drop her two kids off to school and take herself to work. She no longer needed her car because the bike replaced it. Aside from all the health benefits, it was a healthy financial decision as well. It never pays to assume!”

ife is busy – and it speeds along – which is all the more reason to ensure you live a life well lived, says Viola Schoettle, director of Taupō’s Mindful Nourished Roots. “Too often we see people – women especially – who are constantly on the go and giving everything they have to everyone else, and not taking time out to address who they really are, what they really want from life,” she says. “Which is why we need to really break that pattern, make change and start taking accountability.” Reaching out to a career in wellness coaching was a natural step for Viola who first-hand experienced the shortfalls of doing and being everything to everyone – just not herself. “My own wellness journey has afforded me the tools and impetus to reach out to women – particularly those mid-30-40s professionals

who recognise they need greater movement towards self-reflection and fulfilment, but aren’t vested in actioning new measures,” explains Viola. “As a coach, it’s my job to make my clients stay accountable, provide them with a secure space, a listening ear and the necessary strategies to drive their goals.”

Life is for living Going beyond a prescribed programme is essential in the pathway towards greater changes, says Viola. “I journey with my clients and implement actions along the way in accordance with their goal set – i.e. emotional change, physical, nutrition. To bring balance to someone’s life you can’t hand them a list of things to do and leave them to it. You have to stay ever-present and make conscious changes that’re directed towards long-term wellness.” Because, at the end of the day, life is for living and it’s best served with a truer sense of self.

Mindful Nourished Roots offers sessions in person or across Skype/Zoom. Viola also offers a one-to-two hour free first session for new clients. Her time spent working with clients is typically two to six months. Looking to Invest in Property? Now is the Perfect Time

M

ortgage interest rates are currently low – real low – which means now could be the perfect time to invest in property! Here’s why:

You’re more likely to get a better return It’s all in the numbers (and you may need an expert to help you work it out) but annual returns and/or capital gain on investment properties can often be substantially more than holding your money in a savings account. Just make sure you do your research into the market and type of property you are looking at purchasing.

It’s ‘forced’ savings

Buying an investment property is almost like putting your money where you can’t touch it. Provided you find the right investment property for your financial goals, it will continue to work behind the scenes like a long-term deposit.

Triple Tipple Cocktail Favs to Serve Through Summer Turn down the work dial and tune into holiday mode! Dish up a drink – or two – that’s best served with a side of relaxation. Tis the silly season, so kick back and enjoy a cocktail (or two) but do drink responsibly – no one wants a cocktail of misery this Christmas. So, from our team to you, have fun, get creative but remember to plan ahead and consume safely this summer.

Margarita Fizz When you’re hankering for something uplifting and fizzy, with all the benefits of being gluten-free, low in sugar and vegan friendly, you can’t go past a margarita. Here’s a summertime recipe with a twist on the classic. Enjoy!  Makes: 1

What you’ll need in the mix: • Fresh lime juice – approx. 3 to 4 limes • 60ml of good quality tequila • 3 teaspoons agave syrup – or maple if you want to give it a syrupy edge • Bottle of soda water

For the glass rim:

• 1 teaspoon lime zest – finely grated • 1 tablespoon rock salt / sea salt flakes

How to: In a cocktail shaker, shake up your agave, tequila and lime juice. Then, taking your zest and salt, combine together and wet the rim of your glass with lime juice – or water – and roll your rim around the salt mixture. Now, pour your shaker mix into your seasoned glass and top off with soda (and a wedge of lime if you like). Yum! P.S, If you are looking to change up the lime, we also vouch for pomegranate – tangy plus sweet!

Whiskey Sour

Pimm's Tumbler

We’re firm fans of the classics – those that stand the test of time – like the whiskey sour. So, here’s our take on this legend, which also goes by the name of Boston Sour, New York Sour, Baltimore Bang and Pedros Revolver.

This refreshingly cool, zingy and oh-so-suave Pimm’s cocktail is a personal favourite at . Barbeque, Christmas eve tipple or Sunday afternoon sip, this is a drink well suited to any occasion.

 Makes: 1

What you’ll need:

• 60 ml bourbon whiskey • 25 ml lemon juice • 15ml sugar syrup (½ cup sugar, ½ cup water, heat in a pot till sugar dissolves then pour through a strainer) • 15 ml egg white • Chilled cocktail glass – try popping one in the freezer 15 minutes beforehand • Handful of ice • Squeeze of lemon • Orange slice to garnish

How to: In a shaker place all ingredients and shake it up – really go to town on this, the egg whites will thank you. Strain into your chilled glass, adorn with your orange peel and a gentle squeeze of lemon. Now that’s what we’re talking about!

 Makes: 4 to 5

What you’ll need:

• 250ml Pimm's • 500ml of lemonade • 500ml of ginger beer or ale • Couple of handfuls of mint, cucumber and your pick of summertime fruits – strawberries and blueberries are our go-to • Three or four handfuls of ice

How to: Dice your fruit, mint and cucumber, place in a large glass jug – or serving vessel of your choice – add in your Pimm's, ice and then fill to the top with your ginger beer. Give it a good mix about and sip away!

really love what your doing and what I want to do – and just enjoy that.”

“My age certainly hasn’t done me any favours working in the film and television industries, I feel like I’ve come up against a lot of judgement as a young person making television and being self-taught,” she explains. “You definitely get some interesting looks when you tell people, ‘Oh I’m working on a series about queer youth’, but you learn to just focus your energies on the people that

“I’ve played witness to so many unique stories and people within the LGBTQ community, so I knew it would be an amazing venture to tell them. I had multiple sources contribute, so I spent a lot of time talking to people – friends, associates, their friends – about experiences they’d had, and we also set up anonymous submissions so people could share their stories and through that we got some really touching moments.”

hey say age is but a number and for Tauranga local, Rose McMahon, nothing could ring truer. With her seven-episode series, In the Rainbow, screening on TVNZ this year, a busy summer line-up of photography shoots, not to mention a feature film to brace for in 2020 – the 18-year-old barely has time to blink let alone worry about a couple of numbers.

Pushing the positives and opening up new avenues is at the fore of her work. In the Rainbow was inspired by a strong desire to shed a whole new light on the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) youth community with Kiwis countrywide.

TradeMe, ringing the guy, explaining who I was and asking how low he would go in price to sell it to me. When he said $400, I made calls to all my relatives asking them if I could have my Christmas and birthday money early,” she muses.

Shine a light “In the Rainbow fulfilled a passion, I’ve always wanted to share stories about people who are less in the spotlight and bring those people out of the shadows.” And following a summer of photo shoots in the Bay, Rose will be turning her attention to bigger things – a feature film focussing on the LGBTQ community. Waititi, Jackson, McMahon? Watch this space!

Tackling and overcoming her own challenges as a budding photographer and filmmaker has been a gift more than anything, says Rose, and encouraged her to step outside the mainstream with her projects.

“I’ve never expected an easy road. Right from when I chose to step into photography at age 12, I had to navigate my own way through. I remember finding a camera on

“Without Christmas Box, we wouldn’t be having Christmas. We can now have Christmas dinner and enough food to last for a while. You have brought joy to our family and smiles on our kids' faces.” – CB Family 2018

Since its inception in 2001, the project has delivered over 112,000 boxes to numerous families. That’s more than 560,000 people fed!

Filling a void The demand for Christmas Box continues to grow year-on-year. And so, Kiwis like you and I, have an even bigger challenge to help bring a hope-filled Christmas to the table. NZ statistics portray that 10% of Kiwi families are left to face poverty after paying their rent, mortgage and bills.   Deepika Sulekh

Filling the Festive Gap W

hen we think Christmas most of us think of twinkling lights, hearty laughter, and presents glistening under the tree. Yet for over 254,000 Kiwi kids and their families, this Christmas vision is no reality, and year after year many face a bleak festive season. We can change this by supporting New Zealand’s annual Christmas Box initiative. Bringing joy and food to families of four-to-six, so they can enjoy a Christmas meal, and additional food for up to a week.

Spreading the cheer The annual Christmas Box initiative sees thousands of hand-packed and delivered food boxes 48

Reaching Out to Kiwi Families in Need This Christmas

distributed throughout New Zealand, Melbourne and the Cook Islands. Christmas Box partners with over 350+ community organisations and countless volunteers to see the dream of Christmas come true for their whanau, community and nation.

“The September quarter figures confirm that New Zealand is in a poverty crisis," explains Lili Lemalu, Christmas Box's LIFE community manager. "Frontline community workers are saying the demand for food (and housing) has significantly increased. Which is why a Christmas Box is the decider on whether families celebrate Christmas. It's so heart-breaking that it has this much power, but sadly it does.”

Reach out For every $30 you donate, a sponsor gifts an additional $45 to each box. That means you’ll be gifting one family a $75 box worth of food. Grocery items include Weet-Bix and Milo, along with shelf staples like rice and noodles. So, what will you do this Christmas? lot of hard work, from every employee, every day,” says Cheal’s business manager, Rebecca Hawke. Following the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards in October, where Cheal took out the Excellence in the Service Sector award, the team isn’t about to rest on its laurels. “Neither do we focus purely on service as part of our offering,” says Rebecca. “Technical expertise is what we sell, so behind the scenes our engineers, surveyors and planners need to be highly qualified, skilled and experienced in their fields.” Industry professionals are required by governing bodies to undertake Continued Professional Development (CPD) training on an ongoing basis. Engineering New Zealand, the New Zealand Planning Institute and Survey + Spatial New Zealand, all have specific CPD criteria to be met each year in order for individuals to maintain membership. As an employer, Cheal invests significantly in the training and development of its team, recognising the benefits to individuals and their careers, as well as its own organisational pathway and what it can ultimately offer its clients. “It's not just the company that drives this. Having employees who are proactive in their own career development is just as important,”

explains Rebecca. “We are incredibly fortunate to have such a group of employees, and it’s exciting to see our young professionals – the next generation of business and technical leaders – really owning their future.” Most recently, one of Cheal’s graduate surveyors was recognised by Survey + Spatial New Zealand for achieving the highest score in the country for the Cadastral law exam – a key milestone in the pathway to becoming a licensed Cadastral surveyor. And, a young structural engineer, who is currently completing his PhD, has recently returned from Germany after presenting results from one of his research projects. “It’s professionals with the drive to succeed and belief in what they do that form the backbone of a professional services consultancy such as ours,” says Rebecca. Being a business leader requires best business practice across all aspects of the operation. Recruiting the right people, ongoing training, good quality management, client focus and delivery – are all vital ingredients necessary to deliver excellent service. With six offices and 80 employees, the hard work will continue behind the scenes at Cheal for many years to come. Greener on the Other Side Bringing the Outdoors in

Newfound respect “Plants have made a ‘resurgence’ in interior design,” says Holly. “There’s a new respect for indoor plants, people now see the difference they make to a space; they like to experiment with different styles in various spaces; and even opt to gift plants instead of flowers.”

Top tips to help them thrive ...   Deepika Sulekh

S

ummer is officially upon us, so there’s no better time to treat your indoors to a taste of what lies beyond its walls – we’re talking plants. Truth be told, adding pot plants can do wonders to an indoor space. Not only do they add a touch of life, they cleanse the air around us, refresh oxygen levels, and can make us feel relaxed and happier. Nowadays, we often see house plants featured in every pictureperfect setting – that new hipster café or that cool Instagram post –

they’re even fast becoming a status symbol! However, there’s so much more that goes into buying a plant than just finding something that looks nice. For example, you need to know its needs, consider the difficulty levels involved – i.e. care and attention, because let’s be honest, many of us do tend to forget about them at some point! So, being the novice that I am on this subject, I decided to hunt out some expert advice – Holly McDowell, plant-lover and director of Lush Lane – was my winning ticket.

• Natural light: For plants, light is food. Give them bright, indirect sunlight i.e. close to a window, but out of direct sun or they will burn. • Watering: Balance the frequency and volume of water. Most indoor plants prefer the top soil to dry in between watering. If you can see something wrong in the foliage or colour, you’re most likely watering too often. • Repotting: Normally once a year, around spring is the best time. • TLC: This involves picking off dead heads, dusting, turning the pot, fertilise once a month. So ... New Year, new resolution, why not make it a green one!

Holly’s top three plants for beginners ... Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s tongue): These can survive weeks without watering, are tolerant of low light and are pretty forgiving of neglect.

Rubber Tree: This one is a classic easy-care indoor tree and can grow to the ceiling when cared for correctly. 54

ZZ Plant: These are also super easy to care for, they don’t require direct sunlight, and only need watering when the soil is completely dried out. (Undoubtedly one of the easiest plants to keep alive.)

Won’t You Stay With Me Is Airbnb Really All We Need?   Dee Ellwood

H

ear the word ‘Google’ and we instantly think ‘search’, hear the word ‘accommodation’ and ‘Airbnb’ jumps to top position – and for good reason. This brand association continues to cement itself as a longterm home stayer in a competitive marketplace – and there’s the figures to back it. Stats NZ’s 2019 report – Accommodation and the sharing economy in New Zealand – found home sharing accounted for more than 8.8 million guest nights or 18% of total guest nights in 2018 – an 8% increase since 2013. With home sharing now accounting for one in five guests across the country, what does this mean for our commercial industry? Has the accommodation clock well and truly swung in favour of Airbnb enthusiasts or is there still a piece of the pie to share around?

Sharing is caring In the Coastal Bay of Plenty, market share is still very much shared – and that’s important, says Kath Low, head of destination marketing, Tourism Bay of Plenty. “Both commercial and private accommodation play important roles in our visitor economy as different markets have different preferences.” To determine future-forward outcomes, last year Tourism Bay of Plenty commissioned tourism data specialists Fresh Info to research commercial and unmeasured (private) accommodation in the Coastal Bay of Plenty.

“In accordance with the Fresh Info research forecasts, in 2025 the Coastal Bay of Plenty will host around 1.8 visitor nights in commercial accommodation and 6.3 visitor nights in unmeasured (private) accommodation, increases of 16% and 14% respectively – both will still have a place.”

It’s not all black and white Although Airbnb may be the word on the street, when it comes to monitoring just how much of an impact it’s had – or having – on the accommodation market, particularly in the Taupō region, there’s no clear-cut answer. “Many of the homes listed on Airbnb were previously promoted through other short-term holiday rental platforms,” explains Enterprise Great Lake Taupō general manager, Kylie Hawker-Green. “Therefore, it’s challenging for us to get a handle on what is genuinely new property listings versus people listing their properties on multiple platforms.” And whilst Enterprise Great Lake Taupō continually monitor trends in short-term holiday rental activity across the district, these aren’t always indicative of long-term outcomes. However, what we can ascertain from the trend monitoring of now, is that short-term rentals are essential in a district like Taupō, acknowledges Kylie. “With seasonality spikes and peak events – i.e. 2020’s IRONMAN New Zealand triathlon – requiring more accommodation than what is available through the traditional formats like motels and backpackers, the demand is simply there.”

Take flight but stay grounded For those of us hoping to jump onboard the seasonal accommodation gravy train this summer, Airbnb maybe ripe for the picking but it still pays to do your homework. “There are a few features that are attractive to Airbnb, for example they handle all payments on your behalf and you can request all guests are verified with government issued ID,” says Taupō Airbnb host, Matt. “However, despite Airbnb providing insurance cover up to a certain amount, I also got insurance coverage through Malcolm Flowers Insurances – and had no issues getting cover with them – because having insurance based here in New Zealand just felt safer.” And whilst Matt has enjoyed mostly positive Airbnb hosting experiences, he remains undecided as to whether renting out his selfcontained apartment will be a long-term venture. “In my experience, if you want to do it long-term be prepared to put in time, effort and money to create a product people want and enjoy. It takes ongoing administration, planning and execution.” To read the extended version of this article, head online to: www.henrymagazine.nz

Keeping Pace, e-Style

Taupō's a-GLOW:

f you’ve been strolling the streets of Taupō recently, you’ll know there is a new visitor in town. 100 e-scooters have been popping up all over Taupō’s CBD following the trial launch across Labour weekend. Glide Scooters have received the thumbs up for an eight-month trial to bring GLOW (Great Lake on Wheels) to Taupō.

permitted. And, there’s no need to panic if you forget to pull back on the pace when you reach the central boundary line because the scooter will automatically begin to slow down and stop. There are also enforced parking spots all around town to ensure scooter riders don’t get in the way of pedestrians.

“The uptake has been much better than anticipated,” says Dave Wakelin, director of Glide Scooters. “People are enjoying the convenience – being able to skip the traffic – and the fact that they’re so eco-friendly and costeffective too.”

“Bird One is the safest scooter we can find, and the only one that allows slower speeds for our busy CBD,” says Dave. They are easy to master (it only takes about 5 minutes to learn all the ins and outs), they ride smoothly, and have a regenerative

The operation area covers most of the CBD, up to the end of Spa Road, Norman Smith, and along Lake Terrace down to Wharewaka Point. The centre of town has a ‘slow zone’ with a maximum speed limit of 12km/h; beyond the centre 20km/h is 58

brake system – even working in engine failure. Bird One is also one of the eco-friendliest scooters, with zero carbon emissions, making it a very clean, efficient and agile way to get around town.

Meet the Bird

Glide have a dedicated team managing, charging and doing basic 4-point checks every evening. Every day they complete two scooter runs – one morning, one night – redistributing the spread of scooters across town. And repairs are no issue, the team ensure they stock adequate spare parts at all times to utilise as and when.

Ride it to believe it: Keen to give it a try? GLOW are available to hire from 7am to 9pm every day, and cost $1 per trip plus 35 cents per minute. All you need to do is download the ‘Bird’ App, add your credit card details, and scan the code on the scooter you want to ride. It’s that simple.
